BREAKING DOWN SOCIAL BARRIERS FOR HERRIMAN’S IMMIGRANT STUDENTS

W

hen Megan Martinez immigrated from Chile in 2019, she abruptly changed from the crazy, loud kid in class to the introverted kid with low grades and low self-esteem.

“I didn’t know that well English in that time. It was really hard to try and to reach out for help,” she said.

Things improved once she made friends and felt more comfortable at school.

Herriman High math teacher Jessica Mabunga said when teenagers have had their entire life disrupted to move to a new country, don’t have sufficient language skills to understand their teachers, and have no friends to talk to, it’s no surprise that their attendance and grades are poor.

“They need to feel comfortable before they can focus on their grades,” Mabunga said.

HHS Principal Todd Quarnberg said four years ago, just 4% of the students at Herriman High School were English language learners. This year, due to an influx of immigrants, largely from Venezuela, that has grown to 15%.

HHS staff and students have stepped up their efforts to support immigrant students and help them feel part of the school community. They adapted their successful Be the Change program to help students break down social barriers and make connections with their peers and teachers.

A budget season Q&A with Herriman’s Finance Director

S

pringtime is more than budding flowers, baby animals and NBA playoffs. For Utah municipalities, it’s the beginning of budget season.

The Herriman Journal asked Herriman City Finance Director Alan Rae a few questions about this year’s Herriman budget.

Here’s what he had to say.

Q: How have recent inflation and high gas prices impacted the current year budget as well as the forming of the tentative budget?

A: We are seeing higher prices and pressure to increase competitive wages. In the current budget we have made attempts to adjust for inflation and increased costs across all our funds. Our Fleet department has tried to estimate the changes in fuel but if gas prices continue to increase it may be necessary to amend the budget in the future. Our Human Resources department has done extensive research on all our positions, particularly hourly, and have made market adjustments as needed. Many departments have seen costs raise at higher-than-normal rates and have had to make best estimates of what those costs will be. Many departments

will delay adding personnel or equipment to make the budget expenditures grow at a lower rate than that of revenue.

Q: What are the priorities that the City Council has communicated to you for this budget cycle?

A: The City Council has told us that their priority is to maintain the current infrastructure before we do new projects. The budget does add about $300,000 to our streets’ maintenance. As we went through the budget, the priority was making sure that we have a process to maintain existing assets.

Q: Are there any significant changes to the city’s projected revenue for the next fiscal year?

A: Property tax received by the City has not changed since the City was created, but last year we withdrew from the Unified Fire Authority, which created a change in how the tax is distributed. At the time of withdrawal, we were unable to form our fire service district soon enough to assess the tax for this year, so the reduction of the Unified Fire Service Area category on property taxes was added to our general Herriman City tax for this tax period, but will go back out into its own district that the City is creating for the next tax period.

The main increase that we have in the budget is sales tax. The sales tax continues to grow and for the past three years it has seen an increase between 20 and 30%. We expect it to continue to grow at that rate for this budget cycle.

Q: Are there any significant changes to the city’s projected expenses for the next fiscal year?

A: The budget anticipates a few new positions. A deputy city attorney/city prosecutor will provide in-house prosecution services for the court, which was previously contracted out. They will also assist with the work for the City Council.

We have had a part-time judge in our justice court for several years. He recently resigned, and we will be replacing our part-time judge with a full-time judge, as well as expand the days our court operates.

We will also be implementing an interlocal agreement with a neighboring city to allow them to utilize the judge’s services part of the time, which will offset some of the cost.

We will also be adding a Human Resources tech, an Accountant, a Parks Tech I, a Public Works Inspector, and a Building Inspector.

Q: If residents want to get involved or follow the budget process, what avenues are there for them to do so?

A: On April 27 and May 11, the council will be discussing their questions and will propose any changes they want made. On

May 11, the council will approve the tentative budget, which means that is the budget the council has accepted for public review.

After the May 11 approval, the budget will be published to the residents or anyone who would have an interest. On May 25, there will be a public hearing opportunity for residents to come to City Council meeting and offer comments regarding the budget. Residents may also come to any City Council meeting and comment on the budget during the regular public comment portion. The council can make adjustments to the budget up until the final adoption, which will be on June 8. After that, any changes to the budget will come through the normal process of a public hearing before the council makes a change. l

Learning about the world, one song at a time

A

South African hit song has made its way around the world to become a favorite of the sixth graders at Ridge View Elementary.

The 130 sixth-graders performed “Jerusalema,” a song written by South African DJ Master KG featuring vocalist Nomcebo.

The song and its accompanying line dance gained popularity through TikTok and YouTube viral videos. Now people around the world are unified by their love of dancing to the song.

The “Jerusalema” performance was the finale of the sixth graders’ performance of “Music…the Universal Language.” The show featured songs from South Africa, West Africa, India, Iceland, China and Brazil. Students learned the songs and dances.

They also learned to play the songs on a variety of musical instruments.

The program was written by Ridge View Music Specialist Kristen Helton to support what the students have been learning about countries and cultures of the world as part of their grade level standards. In addition to learning the lyrics and meanings of the songs, students also learned about the holidays when they are sung, such as Chinese New Year and India’s Diwali Festival.

“The new songs that we learned, we also learned about the culture that went along with it,” said sixth-grader Cooper Edgeworth.

Students were encouraged to dress in clothing to either represent a country from their heritage or their favorite country.

As the Beverly Taylor Music Specialist, Helton’s job is to integrate music activities with academics. Her lessons reinforce what students are learning in class. Additionally, Helton said, the educational benefits for students involved in music education is well-documented.

She also believes music has another important benefit of bringing people together.

She said this has been especially true after the social separation many have experienced the past two years, when students were unable to perform live for their parents and peers.

tion,” she said. “I don’t know if there’s anything else that can do it like music. It’s so unique in that way.”

When the sixth-graders performed “Samba Lelê,” a Brazilian children’s folk song, as part of their program, many Latino students recognized the style of music and language. Ridge View Elementary has had an influx of refugees this year, many from South American countries. Helton said music has been the universal language for these students. Because playing an instrument

doesn’t require English skills, they’ve been able to easily integrate into music class.

Helton creates a musical performance for each grade to perform each year. In October, third graders performed a Halloween musical. The fifth graders performed “The Elves’ Impersonator” in December.

Fourth graders celebrated Utah history with “Utah…This is the Place!” The second graders will perform their play about bugs at the end of May. Principal Meredith Doleac said music is

an important part of the school culture.

“We really believe that music is a great way for students to express and celebrate,” she said. She added that music class is the favorite part of the day for many kids.

Kelly Lowe is impressed with Helton and said her children, a second and a sixth grader, love music class.

“She gets the kids into it,” she said. l

Ball in: First state unified basketball tournament provides inclusion in high schools

I

n its first unified basketball season, Herriman High brought home ribbons from playing at the state tournament.

But it was more than that.

It was an opportunity for inclusion, partnership and belonging, said First Lady Abby Cox, who supports unified sports through her Show Up initiative.

“Every student has a chance to be included and every student gets the chance to compete,” she said at the opening ceremony of the state unified basketball tournament, where 32 teams played against each other — and sometimes, played together — for a chance to represent their team and school for a ribbon or medal.

“There was a moment in the state tournament where one of the players on the other team came over to our kid who made a basket and gave our player a big hug,” Herriman High coach Jill Ames said. “He was so happy for him and just wanted everyone to score. I’m competitive and I want to win, but to be a part of a basketball game where there’s really no one yelling at you, or at the refs or at each other, and everyone is there wanting to see each other succeed and do their best, that was just amazing.”

The tournament included co-ed athletes from 25 high schools running through a gauntlet of Utah Jazz and Weber State cheer squads and professional teams’ mascots, all there to support unified sports.

It is the first high school state tournament, said Unified Champion Schools manager Courtnie Worthen. During preCOVID-19 years, the tournament was held for community teams vying for the state title.

The 2020 tournament, which was planned to be a statewide event, was canceled because of the pandemic, and last year, regional competitions were held in place of a state tournament to reduce the numbers and possible spread of the virus.

Worthen said after the statewide soccer tournament last fall, which was held at Rio Tinto stadium and had the support of Real Salt Lake, interest in unified sports grew.

“A lot of it was thanks to the First Lady’s initiative, Show Up,” she said. “More schools started to see what unified sports could be and wanted to be a part of it, so we saw a lot of growth. This was an incredible event.”

That event included eight of the nine high schools in Davis School District competing, as well as the Jordan Education Foundation pledging to support 10 new teams, including Herriman High. Wasatch High’s team will even represent Utah at the national Special Olympics games.

Since Worthen began overseeing unified sports four years ago, the competition has doubled from 22 to 50 teams involved in soccer, basketball and track.

“A coach told me that this whole week they have seen inclusion, that their students

have made friends with unified partners and even students who weren’t participating.

They talk to each other and the students on the unified team feel like they’re a part of the school for the first time,” she said.

It’s not just high schools. Worthen said that by the end of the school year, unified sports activities will have quadrupled in the past year, bringing participation up to 160 elementary and secondary schools. In May, unified golf will be introduced at the middle school level.

Unified sports also gained the community’s support.

The basketball tournament, which was supported by the Utah Jazz, had four sections: two developmental and two competitive divisions. The winners of each division were recognized at the Utah Jazz game April 6, where a highlight reel of the tournament was shown.

However, the focus at the tournament was on basketball. Special needs players, or athletes, are joined on the court by two peer students, or partners. The rest of the team regularly rotates in and cheers for both teams on the sidelines. Several schools had banners and families and friends cheering.

Ames, who has coached girls basketball at both Riverton and Herriman high schools, coached unified sports for the first time.

“This was a brand-new opportunity and I fell in love with it. They’re just amazing kids and their peer tutors are amazing as well. It was really fun,” she said.

Her team — five athletes, along with three peer tutors — went through skills training where they dribbled through cones and shot baskets from different spots, which identified their ability as a developmental team.

“So that first day, I got an understanding of where the students’ abilities were and then we could get to work on the basics, shooting, passing, dribbling. The partners were great to work with them and help them,” Ames said.

“It was really fun to see their improvement during the six or seven practices we had.”

That led them to the regional tournament held in February at Riverton High.

Thanks to junior Charles Wilcken promoting the event, Herriman High students filled a section of the bleachers and lead in the cheering. Several Jordan Board of Education members and administrators joined families supporting the teams.

“A lot of kids at school wished us good luck at the game and you could see the kids always smiling because they’re so excited,” Wilcken said. “Every time I got an opportunity for them to score, I’d pass the ball to them and get them to where they knew they could shoot.”

A highlight for Wilcken was in the last minute of their final region game.

“We had a player, and he hadn’t scored in the first two games and we’re really try-

ing to get him to score and there was like a minute left in the last game we had. He shot it like four times…and he finally made it. He was jumping up and down and then the whole student section was going crazy.

It made me really happy, and gave me the chills to see how excited he got over this basket,” he said.

Ames agreed: “To me that was phenomenal, to see our school unified and get behind us – that studentbody was cheering, just like any other basketball game, and treated those kids just the same. We’d hit a three and they all just went crazy. That was so fun to be a part of, to see them come out and support the team and rally around them.”

The team beat Riverton’s competitive and developmental teams and lost to Bingham High for a second-place finish.

At state, which was attended by Jordan School District Superintendent Anthony Godfrey, Herriman lost to Brighton High in the opening round, then went on to beat Jor-

dan and Orem in the consolation rounds.

“We lost by 1 point to Brighton; we had a chance, we had the ball for the last shot and we couldn’t make it. We were right in it.

Brighton was just phenomenal, just making sure everybody got a chance to score. Their team captain would rebound it and just give it to our players and let them shoot,” Ames said. “It’s pure joy, just that excitement when those kids make a basket and then look into the stands, look at their parents, everyone is cheering. They are excited to be there; they want to win just as much as everybody else.

It’s just fun to see them be successful and get better.”

Wilcken said that he plans to join Herriman’s Make a Difference inclusion club.

“Kids with special needs are really fun to hang around once you get to know them; they’re really funny,” he said, glad to be a part of the unified team. “Unified basketball is not about winning and losing. It’s about just making sure everyone enjoys the game

Bingham, who won the regional tournament, beat Jordan High in the state tournament after falling to Hunter and Orem high schools.

Braxton Thornley, who coached the seven athletes and five partners, said he was proud of his team and it was gratifying to see the players improve.

“We had a couple athletes who at the beginning of the season didn’t know how to follow the ball, didn’t know how to move up and down the court,” he said. “By the end of the season, they were moving independently and getting rebounds and making shots. For our athletes to get recognized for grabbing a rebound or making a shot, it’s a huge boost of confidence. Aside from competition, for them to just fit in and be able to do these things that allow them to feel successful is huge.”

develop relationships with those athletes and learn how to support them throughout the season. It’s important that our partners have opportunities to work with these students who belong within our school community and still deserve a voice. Building those relationships is one of the most rewarding dynamics,” he said, adding that through the school’s Best Buddies program it will continue to give students the opportunity to interact.

Riverton also has the Silverwolves Buddy program which allows students an opportunity outside of unified sports to be inclusive.

“We have students that participate in our unified sports and say it was just so much fun. Once they do, they’re more likely to say hello to students in the hallways, go out of their way to make them feel they are a part of the school and that they have friends here and often get involved in our program so they can continue to support the peers,” coach Alexis Brown said, adding that a Jordan School District special needs prom was planned.

In fact, several sports teams, cheerleaders, drill team and dance company, along with Inclusion Cheer, came to support the teams at region. Riverton’s competitive team took first at region and its player development team took third. Both teams took seventh at state.

“The more we compete, the more unified partners we get involved and more people see what it is and realize a little bit more that my students can do this and they’re capable and just like everyone else,” Brown said. “ They have a few more difficulties, but they want the same things – to play on sports teams, to be included and participate on the same level. We’re not going to halfway play.

We’re out there playing full as a team; we’re doing our best, we’re having fun. Unified sports are creating positive experiences for everyone.” l

ast month, Herriman City opened a long-awaited dog park, the first in the city. The K9 Memorial Dog Park provides a new amenity to residents while also honoring the lost lives of K9 police dogs.

“This park was designed to also serve as a permanent tribute to police K9s — particularly K9s Dingo and Hondo, who each gave their lives in the line of duty while serving Herriman,” reads the city’s description of the park.

K9 Hondo was killed in 2020 while assisting with the capture of a man wanted by the U.S. Marshals. K9 Dingo was killed in the line of duty before the Herriman Police Department was formed.

“My family and I really appreciate the support that we’ve had from everybody, and now to memorialize the dogs in this way at a dog park is just perfect,” said Sgt. Ben Ricks of the Herriman Police Department, who was K9

Hondo’s partner.

The nearly 5-acre park is separated into two sections and features plenty of open grass for visiting dogs to run around, and even some features that function as little “dog playgrounds.”

Judging by its first day of operation, the park is already a hit with residents.

oming off the heels of a region championship in 2021, the Mountain Ridge boys soccer team is trying to keep pace with the other top Region 3 teams for another trophy.

The Sentinels defeated West Jordan, Herriman and Copper Hills in their first matchup, but fell twice to Riverton, the second loss coming in a shootout. Those two

defeats placed Mountain Ridge two games behind first-place Bingham in the loss column. But with two of the Sentinels’ final three games of the season coming against Bingham, they’ll have a chance to make up some ground. Those matches are scheduled for May 2 (at home) and May 6 (at Bingham). l

Boys volleyball approved for sanctioning in 2023-24

R

epresentatives of the Utah Boys Volleyball Association had sat in meetings with the Utah High School Activities Association before—over the past four years in a formal fashion. So, when the UHSAA board again put the sanctioning of boys volleyball to a vote, the UBVA members braced themselves. They had been here before, and had walked out disappointed every time. Yet, on this day, March 24, 2022, it would finally be the outcome they had wanted when their organization was formed in 2015.

After decades of boys playing the sport in Utah, boys volleyball is official, and with a 10-4 vote, will now be a UHSAA-sanctioned sport beginning in the 2023-24 school year, joining the ranks with 25 other states nationwide.

“We had a lot more hope and momentum this time, but it was so surreal to sit there and hear it announced. We were just in shock,” said UBVA co-founder Jill Davis.

This latest attempt at sanctioning laid 10,000 signatures in front of the UHSAA board along with written support from local politicians, including Norm Thurston of the Utah House of Representatives, who was in attendance at the meeting, to BYU athletic director, Tom Holmoe, BYU men’s volleyball coach Shawn Olmstead and USA national men’s volleyball coach John Speraw.

UHSAA assistant director Jan Whittaker said, “The UHSAA is excited to be sanctioning boys’ volleyball for the 2023-24 schools year. This will allow many boys who have not been competing in a sport for their school the opportunity to be part of the high school sports experience. They will be able to benefit from the positive impact that high school athletics has on students.”

“When I heard the news, I just thought, ‘Finally!’” said Herriman High boys volleyball coach Gracie Malovich. “I can’t believe it’s taken this long, but I’m so glad the boys get to experience this.”

Mountain Ridge High boys volleyball coach Mark Robins, who developed boys clubs at Riverton, Herriman and now Mountain Ridge, said, “I’m extremely excited about the future of boys volleyball in Utah.”

Kirstin Whitehead, the Real Salt Lake High boys volleyball coach, also followed the sanctioning process closely and was thrilled to see those efforts pay off. “It’s so

exciting that boys volleyball will just continue to grow.”

Davis said, “It’s a wonderful sense of accomplishment and it was an honor to be in the seat. A lot of people told us it wouldn’t happen, but our grassroots efforts and the community support made this happen. This is a victory for everybody, especially the boys and their families.

Davis, a South Jordan resident, has helped spearhead the UBVA’s effort the past few years to get the sport sanctioned. Her sons, Parker and Price, were part of a Bingham High boys volleyball program who three-peated in state titles from 2017 to 2019.

She, UBVA co-founder Warren Van Schalkwyk and Duke Mossman, who coaches at Wasatch High, formed a collaborative effort of continually gathering statistics and surveying coaches statewide to keep up with the growing interest and participation in the sport.

What they found was: • Boys volleyball is one of the fastest growing sport in high schools across the nation.

• Boys volleyball is one of the largest club sports in Utah. In 2015, the state had 24 club teams; last fall, that number was up to 56.

• In 2019, 81 high school teams represented 56 schools in Utah. This year, 122 high school teams are playing from 64 schools with more than 1,500 boys competing.

• More than half of those 64 high school teams had such a demand in numbers that coaches had to cut players at tryouts due to popularity of the sport and lack of facilities.

• Most of the 5A and 6A schools have full teams with the 3A and 4A classifications having a more mixed representation and the more rural schools in 1A and 2A coming in with the lowest participation rates.

• 53% of the boys volleyball programs pay for gym rentals from their schools in order to play and practice.

• 90% of participants statewide just play boys volleyball and are not multi-sport athletes.

“The push that Jill stayed on to make was really key,” Corner Canyon High boys volleyball director Dan Penrod said. “Over this long process, there have always been a few parents that wanted to get the sanctioning ball rolling, but when their boys were finished playing, the momentum died down.

Whittaker noted how the Emerging Sports Program that the UHSAA formed three years ago played a key role in the sanctioning of boys volleyball. “That program was created to grow meaningful participation opportunities for student-athletes, particularly for female student-athletes, in sports and activities,” she said. “A sport can be considered for sanctioning after it meets a certain threshold of participating of our students in member schools. Boys participating in volleyball has steadily grown over the past few years.”

Whittaker said once boys volleyball had met initial criteria for sanctioning consideration the UHSAA Board of Trustees looked at several factors in the ultimate decision-making process including: • The impact on Title IX compliance • The percentage of member schools that facilitate interscholastic competition in the emerging sport • Participation in community-sponsored leagues for the sport • Whether other state high school athletic associations sponsor or sanction competition in the sport • University, college and junior college opportunities for participation after high school • Whether the sport is a lifetime sport or activity, easily accessed in later life, that contributes to public health or fitness • Whether the NFHS or other recognized governing body publishes rules for interscholastic competition in the sport • Assistance available for growing the sport from national governing bodies, instate coaches association and/or in-state officials associations • Significant obstacles to growing the sport, such as lack of facilities, expensive equipment, risk of injury, lack of experienced coaches and officials • The opportunity for student-athletes to participate equally from all socio-economic backgrounds • Whether sanctioning the sport will divert participants from and weaken an existing sanctioned or emerging sport • Whether there is significant competition for student-athletes to participate in this

sport outside of school • The length of time the sport has been an emerging sport • The burden on member schools, districts and on the UHSAA of sanctioning the emerging sport • Utah Division of Risk Management concerns and input “This is not a check off list, but are items that were discussed prior to making the decision to sanction boys volleyball,” Whittaker said, adding that each school and district will “make the determination whether they will sponsor a sport that UHSAA sanctions.”

Davis said that the sanctioning of boys volleyball is a “win-win.”

“This legitimizes it for the boys and creates stability and consistency across the board under a fabulous umbrella. Scholarships are secondary,” she said. “Plus, county rec leagues can still function for those who were cut from their high school teams as well as those who just want to play.”

Davis, the former director of Bingham boys volleyball teams, has been gearing up to step away from UBVA since 2020 when her son graduated but “needed to stay in the game” to see the sanctioning process through. “Personally, to be able to serve these boys has been a thrill, and it’s an even bigger thrill to betting Utah on the map with boys volleyball,” she said. “I’ll forever be a part of the sport, but this ‘cherry on the top’ is so exciting for these kids and a great way to go out for me.”

Robins, who built the RiverMan program at Herriman High, combining Riverton and Herriman players and ran it for several years, brought boys volleyball across town to the Sentinels gym this year where they also have four teams.

Whitehead has been steadily building the RSL program the past three years— where she has a varsity and JV team this season—and is continually looking for more volleyball players that want to come to the

3A school. Whitehead, Athletic Director Becky Hogan and the Griffins players are all aiming to demonstrate that RSL is not just a “soccer school.”

The UBVA will continue to host the state boys volleyball tournament for the next two seasons as budgets, schedules and regional alignments are put in place for the 2024 spring season when UHSAA will take the reins. Herriman Mountain Bike Team athletes build a strong community through cycling

F

or Emily Preece, mountain biking seemed grueling. She had no desire to tackle steep climbs and rocky trails on a bike. But her father, Brandon Preece, an experienced mountain biker, and the team director for the Herriman Mountain Bike Team, finally convinced Emily to give it a shot.

“I’ve never been really physically active,” she said. “The uphill riding totally killed me. I complained all the way.”

But she kept at it and now, two years later, she’s a team captain.

“It was hard for her, really hard for her,” Brandon Preece said. “But she found friends she started to get to know and qualified for state in her second year of mountain biking.

It’s okay for things to be hard but cycling teaches you some things to help you handle the hard things.”

The Herriman Mountain Bike Team is made up of riders (of all skill levels) and coaches from Herriman High School as well as junior high schools within the high school’s boundaries. Preece said being on the team is not about competition, it’s about mental and physical growth.

When Emily, a 17-year-old junior at HHS, first started riding, she had dedicated trainers helping her learn how to tackle ob-

stacles, both on the trail and in her mind. She practiced in a rock garden where she had to ride across challenging terrain.

“It not only taught me how to ride over the rocks and trust my bike, it helped me mentally realize I could do it,” she said.

“You don’t have to know how to ride a bike on the mountain before joining the team.

Anyone can mountain bike. It’s one of the most uplifting sports you can do. There’s no rivalry. We’re all just helping each other.”

Since 2009, the Herriman Mountain Bike Team has worked with riders under the guidance of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, which creates mountain biking programs for students across the country.

Brandon Preece has been with the team for four years and has worked with every level of biker, from first-time riders to competitive varsity cyclists. He finds there are opportunities for every person on the team to improve, compete and participate in riding groups based on their skills, abilities and goals.

“NICA has five core principles: strong body, strong mind, strong character, inclusivity and equality,” Preece said. “We strive to instill those principles in our riders. We’re teaching them to do something hard. I can

guarantee that they won’t love it the first few practices if they’ve never biked. But they’ll learn to love it and make friends and come back for a second season.”

Emily said joining the team changed her life. It can be intimidating to train with the boys on the team, but she has made long-lasting connections through NICA’s Girls Riding Together program. Today, girls make up only 20% of mountain biking athletes. GRT’s goal is to get more girls on bikes by promoting confidence and self-esteem, and creating a safe environment for young women to succeed.

Emily set a goal to race JV-A in the upcoming season, a step just below varsity riders. “I never saw myself racing JV-A,” she said. “Making friends on the team was one of the biggest things that made me decide to do it. We all push each other to be better. We get together and hang out. It helps so much to know you’re not the only girl on the team.”

Brandon Preece said mountain biking is a sport people can enjoy as individuals, teams and families, and hopes more people are inspired to try it out.

“I ride with the kids and we need an army of parents to make this league run,” he said. “I’m hoping in 10 years to still be

n the musical “School of Rock,” Dewey Finn, a crazy, passionate, wannabe rock star, pretends to be a school teacher and organizes his students into a rock band. James Densley, who is playing the role of Dewey in Hale Centre Theatre’s production, is an actual school teacher—the band teacher at Mountain Ridge High School in Herriman.

MRHS junior Greg Olsen said Densley is similar to the character Dewey, who is unfailingly passionate about music.

“He’s very energetic all the time,” Olsen said. “Densley is very passionate about music and his enthusiasm as a band director is contagious.”

Densley said the role does feel very familiar.

“Being a teacher in real life, specifically teaching band and music, I feel the same synergy and energy when I’m pretending to teach music to these kids on stage,” Densley said. “I try to be fun and really engaging and interactive with students in real life, just like I do on stage.”

Densley also has a special connection to the show.

At age 10, he auditioned to be one of the kids in the 2003 “School of Rock” movie, starring Jack Black. He got a callback but was not cast in the movie. However, the experience became a special memory for him and his mom.

A performer herself, Densley’s mom surrounded him with music, encouraged him to audition and to pursue his passion for music, always believing he would be famous someday.

Twenty years later, Densley finally made it into “School of Rock.” As he sang the lyrics

of the opening song, “The dreams that I had since the day I turned 10 will be finally coming true,” he realized that his dream, which began with his first audition at age 10, had come true.

Densley’s mom passed away in 2020, and though she will not see him in the show, he said she has affected his experience in the show.

“The show has been surprisingly emotional and moving,” he said.

“I’m playing this crazy wild man, making people laugh, but there’s just poignant moments in the story that are so touching and moving and meaningful to me.”

Investments of $30 million-plus tackle affordable housing, jobs and water conservation

I

n a response to the state’s housing crisis, the Salt Lake County Council recently approved $20 million in funds to build and preserve nearly 1,200 affordable housing units. The housing will be near childcare resources and jobs, with access to broadband, transportation and schools.

“More affordable housing is desperately needed,” Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said. “There are way too many hard-working households that are left behind because of skyrocketing home prices, rising rents, and fewer options to choose from. Salt Lake County is listening to residents and responding with significant funding to build and preserve housing.”

Funding for the project comes from the American Rescue Plan Act with an additional $12.1 million earmarked for water conservation and workforce development.

With the steady increase of rental and home ownership costs, and stagnant wages, the council approved the ARPA funds in the form of grants to community housing organizations, nonprofit housing providers, municipalities, and private developers.

In 2021, rental costs increased by 12% and homeownership costs increased by

28% or more in the county. In March 2022, the median price for a Salt Lake County single-family home sold for $580,000.

“Housing is one of the things that keep us up at night,” said Dina Blaes, director of Salt Lake County’s Office of Regional Development. “But, fortunately, the county has a lot of expertise in affordable housing. So, we’re going to leverage our expertise with this new funding to enable thousands of families to remain living and working in Salt Lake County.”

Workforce development will receive a $10 million boost for the new Workforce Inclusion and Successful Employment program. Through grants, WISE will help nearly 2,000 students complete trainings that lead to higher-paying jobs. Students will also be connected with childcare, mental health and mentorship services.

“I think this is an awesome opportunity for Salt Lake County residents who might be working two or three jobs. We’re making it easier for them to succeed with career goals that really help themselves and their families,” said Jevon Gibb, Salt Lake County economic development director.

ne in three women will experience domestic violence in the state of Utah.

Statistics also demonstrate that one in six women and one in 25 men experience rape or attempted rape, and one in three women will experience some form of sexual violence.

With such concerning numbers, Intermountain Healthcare is donating $540,000 and partnering with the nonprofit Utah Domestic Violence Coalition to assist Utahns who need help in recovering from the impacts of abuse.

“Access to resources is an essential part of the healing process,” said Mikelle Moore, senior vice president and chief community health officer at Intermountain. “The members of the UDVC work together to support domestic violence survivors in a way that makes access easier and the use of funds more efficient. Intermountain is proud to support their efforts ensuring services are available where and when survivors need it.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, sexual and domestic violence cases have risen 8.1% in Utah. The UDVC provides advocacy and education to member programs and community partners. Its membership in-

cludes nonprofit domestic violence shelters and sexual assault advocacy organizations.

The donation from Intermountain will help cover the operations costs of UDVC members. These community organizations provide resources to address healing from trauma such as the reduction of psychological suffering.

UDVC will distribute the donation to more than a dozen local organizations: Canyon Creek Services, CAPSA, Dove Center, Friends Against Family Violence, Gentle Ironhawk, Healing Pathways, New Hope Crisis Center, New Horizons Crisis Center, Peace House, The Refuge, Safe Harbor, Seekhaven, South Valley Services, YCC, YWCA, Rape Recovery Center and Restoring Ancestral Winds. The Be the Change program was originally implemented at HHS in 2018 in response to a rash of student suicides. HHS Counselor Cindy Watkins said the program helps students let down their defenses and realize that they aren’t alone in their problems. She said attendance improves when students discover that when they come to school, there are people who will sympathize with and support them.

“What they come away with is that connection,” Watkins said.

The program is called Be the Change because it empowers students to change their thoughts, attitudes and behaviors to reach out to connect with their peers.

Martinez, who is now a college student, attended the activity to share her experience and be an example of a success story. School staff and community members also acted as role models to help students have a good attitude about school.

“Students leave with a different perspective about their peers, about their teachers and just that people are people,” Mabunga said.

Tulio Gonzalez, who moved from Venezuela one year ago, made new friends at the activity. After playing games and sharing personal stories with each other, they felt more comfortable talking to each other at school and started eating lunch together.

“Sometimes people just judge you because they don’t know you or because you’re different,” he said. “So the Be the Change activity is to get to know people.

And that made you realize how much in common you have with someone.”

Sarelena Diaz had a difficult time making friends when she moved here from Venezuela three years ago.

She said Be the Change is about improving that experience for kids moving into HHS this year.

“It’s awesome how this activity, Be the Change, actually connects you with other people that you don’t know,” she said. “I’m meeting people from the same country I come from, and I didn’t know they were here.”

Sabrina Antequera, who moved from Venezuela six months ago, said she made new friends with kids at the Be the Change activity who she had seen every day at school but had never talked to before.

Diaz and Antequera are members of the school club Latinos in Action. They helped plan a Latin American Carnival-themed dance the weekend after the Be The Change activity to help students expand connections outside their social groups.

their own country. She said latino kids often don’t go to school dances because they are planned by American students with American music and dancing, so they don’t feel included.

The Carnival dance, which featured popular American and Latin American music, was open to all students.

About 200 kids attended the dance.

Diaz said about half were non-latino students, which surprised her.

“I didn’t think that they will be interested in a dance with our culture because they have other dancers that they may enjoy better, but I was surprised by the amount of people that attended,” she said.

“It was awesome seeing how they adapted to us in that moment, and tried to understand our culture.”

The Latino students taught their classmates the joropo, a fast-moving Venezuelan dance. They prepared a fruit drink called papelón for the refreshments.

Diaz said the dance was different from the interactions the students usually have at school.

“It’s, like, divided, Americans on one side and us on one side, just because we don’t have a lot of things in common,” Diaz said. “But the dance made us realize that we are together.”

She said many American students made an effort to understand the Latin American culture and to get to know the Latino kids.

“We’re able to talk to them now and we’re friends,” Diaz said. “I now talk to people that I didn’t know.”

LIA members hope to continue to hold activities that create cultural awareness.

“We don’t want barriers between us,” Antequera said. “We want to make friends with everyone, no matter where you’re from.” l

Stampede Drumline doing a bang-up job

erriman High School’s Stampede Drumline halftime show began with drummers tapping their way up and down metal ladders in a catchy beat. It ended with power tools—fast spinning angle grinders hitting sheets of metal to create percussive beats and highflying orange sparks.

“The loudest cheers always come as soon as they hear those grinders start spinning up and realize what’s about to happen,” senior Nathan Rowe said. “Usually the crowd gets pretty hyped-up, even people who’ve already seen it before.”

Stampede Drumline is a new performance group this year at HHS. They entertain audiences and athletes with their unique halftime shows and keep the energy high by filling timeouts and pauses in the game with catchy rhythms and grooves.

“We are up in the stands doing cadences whenever we can to keep the crowd on their feet,” junior Carsen Powers said. “The drums are really loud on the basketball court.

Everyone can feel it and hear it and it’s easy to get into it.”

Compliments on their performance have come from both HHS and visiting spectators and athletic teams.

“We’ve received compliments from the coaches and the team saying that us being there gets them more ready to play, so we’re hyping up the team as much as we are the crowd,” Rowe said.

HHS is the first school in Jordan District to offer a drumline class. The idea to create a performance drumline group came from a student and was enthusiastically supported

by Principal Todd Quarnberg. HHS Director of Percussion Nicholas Jackson had the passion for drumline and the connections to start the group’s inaugural year off with a bang.

Stampede’s winter show was one previously performed by UVU’s drumline, Green Man Group, which often uses nontraditional instruments and visual theatrics in their shows.

Most of the 15 members of Stampede have been playing percussion since middle school and have performed in ensemble bands and marching bands. Stampede Drumline provides an opportunity to expand their skills further.

“I think it’s really cool to be able to say that I’ve played everything in percussion and to be able to experience all the different aspects,” Rowe said. “There’s so many different things in percussion, so it’s fun to try them all.”

Members of Stampede said it is a different experience than playing in a marching band drumline.

“It’s more pep band and hyping the crowd rather than doing something for points and precision,” Rowe said. “We still try to go for that, but it’s a lot more fun.”

Junior Huck Coons said the visual impact is an important part of the performance.

“We’re concerned more about how it looks rather than how easy it is to play, or how good the sound you get on the ladder is,” he said.

Stampede will debut a new show this spring, which will entertain audiences at various sporting events and assemblies. Jackson said the new show will feature a moving drum set, among other surprises.

“There is a certain amount of show and flair that we have to have to be entertaining,” Jackson said. “We do add some funny, humorous, even flashy kind of elements to what we’re doing.” l

The featured speaker is Congressman Chris Stewart.

H

e might not have a parrot or an eye patch, but my dad has found more buried treasure than any pirate. Inside his mild-mannered dad costume lurks the heart of Captain Jack Sparrow, ready to tackle any adventure with dashing flair and comic grace.

On a blustery day in April, he took a pickaxe and hammer to help his great-grandkids find fossilized shells and pieces of quartz on the side of a mountain near his home in central Utah. He was excited about every discovery, and everywhere he looked, he saw treasure.

He pointed to the west and said, “That mountain is full of blue agate.” He pointed down and leaned in to whisper, “We’re standing on the biggest gold mine in the state.” He pointed east to where dinosaur bones hide in the hills and pointed south to Native American sites where he’s examined petroglyphs and rock paintings.

I’ve explored with Dad many times, usually only finding spiders, cacti and the occasional rattlesnake. He can stick his hand in a hole in a rock and pull out gemstones, old coins and a jackalope skull.

Dad’s always had a sense of adventure. If he could make a living exploring

With his keen, scientific mind, he built model airplanes and assembled rockets that exploded in midair, not always on purpose. They probably were.

Even with his work, he stood on the leading edge of discovery. In the ’60s, he helped build the first communications system for Air Force One. Later, he created cameras that flew on the space shuttle, were installed in telescopes and helped aerial refueling tankers.

A camera he designed took the first pictures of the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean.

Never one to pass up a good conspiracy theory, Dad talks about his close encounters with UFOs, ghosts, the Illuminati and home teachers. He also plays the accordion, although how can you tell if someone does that well?

He’s a master woodworker, making toys, banjos, ukuleles and violins that he donates to teens. He cuts and polishes the stones he finds to make necklaces, and he’s been known to set a trap or two for Santa Claus. He’d frighten us with scary stories before bedtime, stories he insisted were true, which made it worse.
