HERRIMAN RUNNER NAMED CROSS COUNTRY’S GATORADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

H

erriman High senior Addi Bruening was named the Gatorade Utah Girls Cross Country Player of the Year last month.

The award followed an impressive senior season campaign which ended with Bruening placing first at the state meet with a time of 17:28:3.

“I went into the season having won the 1600 and 3200 in track and it was my senior year, so I was really hoping to be able to win state,” Bruening told the Herriman Journal. “You never know what to expect going into the season, but I did a lot better than I ever hoped I could.”

Her final time was so fast that it broke a state record… sort of.

“According to her coach who asked other coaches, no other Utah high school girl runner who has run a 5K in Utah has ever run a faster time,” explained her mother Diana. “There have been girls who go to meets out of state, and because of the elevation, they have run a faster time.”

It’s not the only record she’s set in the state of Utah. Last spring, she broke the state record for the 3200-meter race at the state track and field meet.

For this upcoming track season, she has her eyes set on breaking the record for the mile. She’s

run a five-minute mile before (and beat the time of the state record) but never in an official race.

So where does her talent for running come from?

Some of it is natural. Her father ran track for a year. Her mom won a district championship in cross country when she was in middle school.

(Though Addi has taken a look at her mom’s times and teasingly concluded that she was actually pretty slow.) She showed natural speed in elementary school, beating neighborhood friend and future local girls football star Sam Gordon in a footrace. She then got involved in a cross country program run by a local recreation center, where she finished third in her first race.

As she grew older and started running at the high school level, Addi’s athletic development became all about her dedication.

“When Addi has a goal, she just laser focuses and goes for it. Waking up at five in the morning to run in 12 degrees. She just does whatever it takes,” her mom said.

South Valley woman’s nonprofit connects brain injury survivors to resources

I

n April 2013, TyAnne Crook’s life changed forever when her then 5-year-old son, Alex, fell from a department store escalator that was installed without the required safety features.

“I watched my little boy lying so still that he looked dead,” Crook said. “Sometimes his eyes would flutter open. Sometimes he would say something. Doctors and nurses said so many words that I knew the meaning of, but I couldn’t make sense of it. All I knew was a strangulating fear. Even when he came home from the hospital, I slept next to his bed for weeks.”

Alex was diagnosed with a skull fracture, brain bleed,and traumatic brain injury. Crook was given the usual cautions and things to watch out for such as rest, avoiding screens and alerting their doctor should anything change.

Well, things certainly changed.

“Once the period of sleeping all the time wore off, he was always angry, which was weird because he was normally such a happy kid,” Crook said. “I figured his head still hurt where the fracture was, and it would go away. It didn’t.

He hated all the foods he used to love. He was so anxious about everything. He started these weird behaviors like hoarding food and changing his clothes six or more times a day.”

“Fairly quickly, he wasn’t just angry anymore; he became violent,” she continued. “Violent enough that everyone else in the house was afraid of him. Does a 5-year-old have the strength to throw a dining room chair? He does.

I went to the doctor and was brushed off. I went to the doctor again and again. Things were getting worse. He wasn’t sleeping anymore.

He used to perform all the normal activities of daily living that were age-appropriate for a 5-year-old, and now he couldn’t. He couldn’t remember how to get dressed or tie his shoes.

He couldn’t figure out brushing his teeth or even showering anymore.”

From doctors, friends, family and neighbors Crook heard every possible explanation for Alex's behavior. “He’s overcoming a traumatic experience…he’s just a brat…he’s lazy…

you’re lazy…he needs discipline…maybe you need to see a counselor for your attention-seeking behavior.”

“And then one day we met a doctor that changed all that,” Crook explained. “Out of the many doctors we had seen, this was the first to understand the long-term consequences of brain injury. The doctors in the hospital were great at acute care. They put Humpty Dumpty back together again.”

Brain injury is more common than many people realize. While most hear about TBI, it's not always understood that concussions, strokes and aneurysms are also brain injuries. Encephalitis, hydrocephalus, carbon monoxide poisoning, hypoxia, anoxia, brain tumors and even birth injuries can result in brain injury.

“Approximately 60% of our prison inmates have a history of brain injury. This is due to poor impulse control and other typical symptoms post brain injury. It’s estimated that more than half of the homeless population is brain-injured. Mental health problems are common in the brain injury community with 40% of survivors experiencing severe enough depression to require medical intervention,” Crook said.

Crook’s journey with Alex inspired her to start the nonprofit BrainStorm for Brain Injury (www.brainstormforbraininjury.com). This organization connects brain injury survivors to therapists, community resources, legal experts and other survivors and their families.

“The advice we were given at the hospital was wrong,” Crook said. “If you’ve experienced any brain injury, see a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor who specializes in neurorehabilitation as soon as you can. Also, concussion protocols are worthless.”

BrainStorm for Brain Injury provides resources to providers and experts, and advocates for TBI. “To all the caregivers out there, you are heroes,” Crook said. “To all the survivors out there, you can do this. To everyone else out there, remember that if you see someone who

Celebrate St. Paddy's Day with shamrocks, leprechauns and the color orange

ocal Danielle Millar Stoddard's Irish mother celebrated St. Patrick's Day by wearing orange.

"My great grandfather was Protestant Irish and raised his children to wear orange on St. Patrick's Day. My grandmother would let my mom and her siblings wear green so they wouldn't get pinched at school, but if Grandpa was coming over, they had to change quickly to something orange; otherwise, Grandpa would get so mad. He was very stubborn and set in his ways!"

The green color rules on March 17, but not all people wear green. Some wear orange.

First celebrated in 1631, St. Patrick's Day is a Roman Catholic holiday that honors the patron saint of Ireland. The color green is the Irish Catholic tradition, but not all Irish citizens are Catholic. Some are Protestant. Protestants wear orange to honor William of Orange, the Protestant king who overthrew Roman Catholic King James II in the Glorious Revolution in 1688.

The Irish flag, with its vertical blocks of green, white, and orange, is representative of the blending of the cultures. The green represents the majority of Roman Catholics; the orange represents the minority Protestants; and the white in the center symbolizes purity and peace between the two sides.

According to the website Patriot Wood, "When Ireland's flag was created, white was chosen as the central color to represent a lasting truce and hope for peace between the two sides. It represents the ideal that every person has a part in Ireland, regardless of political stance, religion, or ethnicity."

Other Irish traditions on St. Patrick's Day include a meal of corned beef and cabbage, which, according to Delish.com, isn't actually the national dish of Ireland. It's typically only eaten in the U.S. around the holiday.

"During the time of the Irish immigration to the U.S., the first generation of Irish-Americans were in search of the comforting tastes of their homeland. On St. Paddy's Day, that meant boiled bacon. But the immigrants were too poor to afford the high price of pork and bacon products. Instead, they turned to the cheapest cut of meat available: beef brisket. The corned beef was paired with cabbage, as it was one of the cheapest vegetables available to the Irish immigrants," said the website.

While St. Patrick's Day is just another day to some people, to others, the celebrations go beyond wearing green to avoid getting pinched. Herriman’s Denise Wooten Christiansen said, "As a granddaughter of Irish immigrants, St. Patrick's Day is special to me and it's become special to my children. I decorate

our home, wear a special green chenille shamrock pin that my grandma made for every child and grandchild in our family every year, and eat corned beef and cabbage for dinner. It is a day to remember our Irish heritage and to carry on the multi-generational traditions of our family," Regardless of how you celebrate or not celebrate St. Paddy's Day, perhaps this famous Irish blessing that abounds this time of year resonates: "May the road rise to meet you,

May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. The rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand."

Or perhaps this Irish blessing that local resident Megan Sticht shared may be more appropriate to your mood: "May those who love us, love us. And those that don't love us may God turn their hearts. And if He doesn't turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles, that we may know them by their limping." l

Chinese immersion program family comes together to celebrate holiday

T

risha Teeples, a senior at Herriman High School, has spent 11 years immersed in Chinese language and culture as a student in Jordan District’s Chinese dual language immersion program.

“Learning Chinese has actually been really fun with all the activities we get to do,” she said.

Learning Chinese painting and paper cutting, playing Chinese instruments and performing Chinese dances has always been a part of how students have celebrated Chinese New Year at DLI schools. Teeples said Chinese New Year is also about coming together with family. That is why the Jordan District family of Chinese DLI schools celebrated this year’s holiday with a combined event.

The Chinese DLI program is in its eleventh year, with 1,720 students in grades 1–12 enrolled in four elementary schools, four middle schools and four high schools in Jordan District.

A community Chinese New Year celebration was held at Herriman High School Feb. 2 to celebrate the success of and bring awareness to the program.

“We really want to celebrate their achievement and success and to showcase our students,” Jordan District Chinese DLI coordinator Kimberly Chen-Pace said.

Elementary and high school DLI students performed for their parents and peers, with traditional dances and songs. Middle school students demonstrated what they have learned through class projects about Chinese instruments, opera, medicine and foods.

Mountain Creek Middle DLI teacher Michael Lu said it was a great opportunity for his students to share their knowledge with younger students and parents because it helped them realize how far they’ve come in their own learning.

“The DLI program is challenging,” he said. “But they progress each day and this is an opportunity for them to see the achievements they have made.”

Eastlake Elementary fifth grade DLI teacher Thomas Boulay said it helped younger students to see older students and get an idea of how much they will know in a few years. Parents also got the chance to see the potential for their children who are just starting out in the DLI program.

The celebration exposed Heidi Goodrich to some of what her son Braeden has been so excited to learn in his second grade DLI class at Eastlake Elementary, such as writing Chinese characters and creating Chinese crafts. Goodrich said exposing her son to different cultures is one of the reasons she placed him in the DLI program.

Older students take Chinese history and modern Chinese culture classes, while younger students explore Chinese culture through arts, crafts and games.

With a degree in English as a Second Language and experience teaching English to Chinese children, Alexis Tanner under-

stands the cognitive benefits for young children who learn a second language. That’s why she has enrolled her son in the Chinese DLI program at Foothills Elementary.

Teachers get a much needed wellness day

T

eachers were at a breaking point when the omicron surge hit in January.

“It's the accumulated stress of the last two years that has made things difficult for every employee,” Jordan School District Superintendent Anthony Godfrey said. “Plus, because we're understaffed and it's difficult finding substitutes, many times employees have to do not only their own work but the work of others. It's a big strain to have to continue to do that day in and day out.”

To give district employees a much needed break, the Flex Friday (online day) scheduled for Feb. 11 was adapted to a health and wellness day.

“It's just a chance for us to stop and focus on student, family and employee health and wellness as we gear up for the remainder of the year,” Godfrey said. “It's been a very difficult year, perhaps the most difficult, and so I think everyone benefits from taking time to take care of themselves and to refocus.”

Employees were invited to use the day to catch up on work (without having to fit in times to meet with students), to utilize mental health resources or to take a day off (without having to find a sub.) Unlike a professional development day, there were no required meetings or trainings.

Butterfield Canyon Elementary assistant principal Angie Hamilton was grateful.

“I thought that was really cool that they're recognizing and appreciating what teachers are going through,” she said. “Everybody is hanging on by a thread, so any recognition or time for themselves is so appreciated.”

The team of third grade teachers at Butterfield Canyon Elementary used the day to lesson-plan together. They were able

to enjoy time together, go out to lunch and just enjoy the day, Principal Michelle Peterson said.

After she checked in on her teachers, Peterson attended a wellness class, and then she went swimming, one of her favorite pastimes. As an educator for 30 years, she said it was the first time she’s seen a district provide this kind of resource for its employees.

Many local businesses also offered employees free access to gyms and fitness centers. Local Swig locations offered free drinks.

Jordan District offered employees and students access to 50 on-demand health and wellness classes through the Cook Center for Human Connection. Additionally, district employees taught classes, in-person and remotely, on yoga and personal and professional stress management.

A team of teachers from Kauri Sue Hamilton School attended “Finding Fulfillment in Life and Work” and came away with some tips to help themselves and their students. After the class, they ate their free lunch at the onsite food truck, and then headed back to the school to catch up on work.

“It definitely was great to just get work done that we need to because we never have the time— time that isn't unpaid—to finish stuff that we need to,” teacher Eden Withers said. “That helps your mental health because then you're not stressed about it.”

Godfrey hoped the day helped employees renew, recharge and refocus.

“I also hope that it's just the beginning of a continued focus on individual health and wellness going forward,” he said.

To further help their employees through this rough time, JSD implemented a substitute teacher incentive bonus, which

helped increase availability. When the shortages affected bus drivers, JSD’s director of transportation, administrative staff and mechanics took on bus routes to help drivers, who were covering multiple routes. Board of Education member Darrell Robinson pledged to take every Friday off of work to help with custodial duties at local schools.

“It's really impressive to me, but not surprising, how employees reach out to support each other, to chip in, to work to do whatever they can to support each other personally and professionally,” Godfrey said. l

“Everyone was gone and the lights were off, but she was still there running around the track because she needed to get in more miles for the week,” he said.

Even when their family goes on vacation, Addi doesn’t skip a day of training.

“We do long road trips in the summer, and she’s not willing to take a day off from running. So we’ll be in the middle of Kansas or something, and we have to get up in the morning and go for a run. She’s probably run in 30 states,” Ari said.

“There are definitely days that I don’t feel like running,” Addi said. “But it’s grown to be mandatory for me. I just have to do it.”

That level of self-discipline has also served Addi well in the classroom, as she has maintained a 3.9 GPA despite taking numerous honors and AP courses.

Following her senior year, Addi will head down to Provo to attend BYU, her childhood dream school. She’ll be running for the Cougars’ cross country team, which won the national championship last year, and came in second this year. She’s looking forward to the challenge of competing at the college level, especially for what is one of the strongest programs in the country at the moment.

“It’s crazy to think about, I’m used to being the fastest, so it’ll be nice to have girls who are faster than me, who can push me,” she said. l

Herriman teen to attend national youth summit on the environment

A

Juan Diego Catholic High honors biology student has been selected as one of 100 students nationwide to participate in a week-long youth summit on the environment in Fairfax, Virginia this summer.

Sophomore Sammy Pickering, of Herriman, will learn about environmental science and conservation while at the 2022 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment June 26 through July 1 at George Mason University. The youth summit at GMU partners with the National Zoo and the National Geographic Society.

Pickering was nominated to be a delegate. While she doesn’t know who nominated her, students are typically nominated by their teachers, counselors or Washington Youth Summit on the Environment alumni.

Pickering received an email in the fall, then an acceptance letter in January.

“I like to look at college letters and this just happened to be the one that I pulled out,” she said. “I was very shocked when I found out I could go to Washington, D.C. for this.”

According to the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment website, students are selected on academic excellence and have an interest in environmental science.

“I’ve always had a love for animals and saving them and figuring out ways to help them survive in the ocean,” she said.

As a conference delegate, Pickering and other students will have exclusive field visits to the National Zoo, NASA Flight Center, the National Aquarium, National Geographic Society and other places as well as be able to talk to researchers, scientists, professors, directors and program staff to gain an inside look at environmental science, policy and conservation issues.

Pickering also is expected to be able to talk to lawmakers on Capitol Hill about environmental issues and topics. She hopes to be able to talk to U.S. Sen. Mike Lee. “I want to look up the issues that they see on the environment and then issues I have on the environment in Utah,” she said.

In addition to environmental issues, there will be discussions about selecting colleges and careers in the field and she will have the opportunity to stay in a GMU dorm. Local officials combine forces to promote volunteering in schools

S

ilver Crest Elementary students were in for a surprise on their way to school one morning last month. Helping them crosswalk was none other than Herriman City Mayor Lorin Palmer and Jordan School District Board Member Darrell Robinson.

The combined volunteer effort was intended to both raise awareness for the need for volunteers in the area’s schools, but also to give the two leaders a chance to explore ways their respective entities can work better together.

Crossing guards, for example, fit into a unique overlap between city government and public school districts. One might expect they’d be school district employees, but they’re actually employed and trained through municipal police departments.

Participating in the morning crossing walk routine gave both leaders some new insights.

“I think it was eye opening how many people don’t slow down for the school zone. I was impressed with our crossing guards, how they interact with these kids. They notice when someone’s not there,” Palmer said.

Robinson and Palmer also talked about ways the two sides could find new synergies, such as staggering schools’ start times so that crossing guards could cover multiple schools in the same morning.

Following their morning crosswalk assistance, the two went to Fort Herriman Middle

School where they participated in a career fair and then volunteered as aides in a number of classrooms.

“They’re short on aids right now, just like everything else out there,” Palmer said.

Public schools have been hit especially hard by the latest more-contagious Omicron wave of COVID-19. Many have found themselves so understaffed due to sickness that they’ve had to turn to unconventional means of keeping the school up and running. Gov. Spencer Cox even issued an executive order allowing state employees to take approved time off to be a substitute teacher for a day.

But according to Robinson, the district hasn’t seen a rush of volunteers.

“We haven’t seen a lot of state volunteers yet.

I don’t know if it’s because it’s a new program… or if people don’t know how to volunteer at the school. And we’re all busy. So many families rely on two incomes so they don’t have a parent with time to volunteer during the day. I understand that,” he said.

Still, it’s a very valuable experience, as it gives parents a chance to see what goes on inside their kids’ schools.

“I think it always changes what people think.

You see how hard the teachers work. You see how some students are having a hard time. It gives you more empathy and understanding for how hard our educators are working,” Robinson said. l

Students learn r-e-s-p-e-c-t for Black musicians

T

o celebrate Black History Month, students studied Aretha Franklin’s music and learned a rhythm stick routine to her song “Respect.” They also learned about other African American musicians such as 1900s composer Margaret Bond, jazz great Louis Armstrong and Old School rappers Snoop Dogg and Run DMC. Butterfield Canyon Elementary School music specialist Emily Ryskamp wants her students to appreciate music of all kinds.

“If they know where music comes from—all types of music—they can have more of an understanding of how the world works,” she said. “It may not be music you love but these artists are still doing the same thing as musicians you do love.”

Ryskamp uses a baby book about the history of rap music to introduce her students to the genre.

“I have to, first of all, break that stigma,” she said. “Using a children’s book really helped because they realize rap doesn’t have to be about all these bad things. It can be just like any other type of music—an opportunity to express what’s inside of you.”

Ryskamp used rap music to help younger students learn about the different kinds of beats and the basics of rhyming. She had the older students work together to write a rap about winter.

Ryskamp believes being exposed to and learning to appreciate a variety of music styles leads to tolerance for people who are different.

“I want the kids to understand that you don’t have to like it to appreciate who did it or the work that they put into it,” she said.

She strives to create a classroom that is a safe place, where students don’t have to be

embarrassed that they like music that their friends don’t like. She uses another children’s picture book to instill this lesson. It features an African American boy who loves playing the violin as much as he loves playing sports.

“I really want my kids to be able to see diversity and that, yes, you can do music and sports and be whoever you are,” she said.

To engage students in learning music theory, Ryskamp incorporates popular music—such as songs by Grammy Award winning Taylor Swift. Recently she has used music by Lin-Manuel Miranda from the popular movie “Encanto.”

“I try my best to make it modern and something that’s important to them as well,” she said.

Even if students don’t like a particular song, they learn to recognize music elements such as timber, dynamics and tempo.

Ryskamp makes music accessible to all kinds of learners, incorporating activities for students to relate to music by sight, sound, smell, taste and touch.

Students love to get physically involved in music and Ryskamp provides a variety of instruments—tambourines, drums, blocks, cymbals, maracas, sticks, boomwhackers, recorders and ukuleles—to explore music.

As a music specialist, Ryskamp coordinates with teachers to create lessons that reinforce their academic lessons. She also involves teachers in music appreciation.

“We’ve had her come a couple times to our faculty meetings,” Principal Michelle Peterson said. “She brought the boomwhackers and teachers had a blast. Sometimes it’s just to lighten the mood and have fun.” l

hen Herriman’s Loretta Campbell asked perfect strangers who have cool cars to show up last-minute to her car-loving son’s 5th birthday party in January, she was blown away by the response.

“I had an outstanding response from people who would be willing to come out for him. A total of 14 cars showed up! Some sports cars and some vintage cars showed up.

People came honking and waving. One car threw candy out to my son and his friends.

One of the cars had a homemade ‘Happy 5th Birthday Mason’ sign on the side of the car.

Some cars played music for him. Everyone was so kind!” Campbell said.

Included in the line-up were Brent Nelson’s 1929 vintage Fargo car and Kolton Bitton’s 2012 Chevy Sonic electric blue “Hot Wheels” car. The car was originally his

father’s daily vehicle, but slowly it evolved into a father-son build and eventually became a show car.

“We made a custom front bumper for it with a Chrysler 300 grill, and the whole thing is a wrap. It turned into a Hot Wheels car because me and my dad are both big Hot Wheels fans,” Bitton said.

Bitton is accustomed to doing special events and enjoyed the kids’ reactions at Mason’s party.

“It was great. All the kids absolutely loved the car and I think it really made his birthday one to remember,” Bitton said.

But the true measure of success came from Mason himself. When he saw the cars, he said, “This is my surprise?!? Wowww!

Salt Lake County Council approves funding for new trails

More trails for walking, running, and biking is something we hear over and over from county residents, so in February the Salt Lake County Coun-

cil approved $10 million for the design and implementation of new trails throughout the valley!

In addition to the funds to build more trails, we also allocated $1 million for trail maintenance. Funds for these projects came from a designated fourth quarter choice transportation fund and were generated in 2019 through sales tax dollars specifically allocated for projects like this. Previous trail funding has come from a variety of sources including grants, UDOT, and collaboration with cities.

Salt Lake County already boasts some great trail options. The Jordan River Parkway is a north-south system of trails that parallel the Jordan River, connecting 45 miles through Salt Lake County. The trail further connects to neighboring counties, allowing for travel to Utah Lake and the Great Salt Lake.

Parley’s Trail is the first east-west trail linking the Bonneville Shoreline trail on the east to the Jordan River Parkway to the west.

The trail connects a variety of neighborhoods in Salt Lake City, Millcreek, South Salt Lake and West Valley City. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail is also continuing on the south end of the valley.

An option for those in the middle of the valley is using existing canal networks. The County has been able to obtain an executed trail agreement with some of the canal owners. This trail agreement allows Salt Lake

County to use the canal maintenance road as public space for a trail. The canal company benefits from having their dirt maintenance road paved and the County provides a trail system that is separated from vehicle traffic.

If the canal owner is not interested in entering into a trail agreement the County is unable to use the space as a trail, but we don’t give up easily!

Future trail development is dictated by the countywide regional trails master plan.

The first master plan was completed in 1993.

An updated countywide regional trail master plan is planned for 2023 and from that point

forward the plan will be updated every 10 years.

Having a robust trail system throughout the Salt Lake Valley benefits everyone. More open space will expand access and raise the quality of life for all of us. Mountain Ridge wrestling team takes nine wrestlers to state competition

A

n impressive total of nine wrestlers from the Mountain Ridge wrestling program qualified for the state meet, which was held Feb. 18-19 (after the City Journals’ press deadline).

“We had a great season,” said head coach Mitchell Stevens. “We were undefeated in region duals and ended up region champions for the first time. We got a couple top-ranked kids so we’re doing pretty well.”

One of those individual wrestlers is Layne Kleimann, a freshman wrestling in the 106-pound weight class. Not only did he take first in the state’s all-star meet, but he

took first place in a national competition for greco wrestling last summer.

Another wrestler who qualified for state was Kyison Garcia. After winning a state championship in his weight class as a freshman, he took third place last year wrestling on a broken leg. Now a junior, he competed in the 126-pound weight class.

Other Sentinel wrestlers who qualified for state include Hunter Sanchez (106), Chanden Reid (132), Preston Stevens (138), Jaxon Bearden (144), Cody Stewart (165), Cayden Thomson (175) and William Adamson (215).

Qualification for state was based on a divisional meet that took place at the beginning of February. To qualify, a wrestler had to finish in the top eight for their respective weight class. With the state’s 6A teams divided into two divisional meets, that results in a total of 16 wrestlers per weight class who move on to the state meet.

The Sentinels were assigned to a divisional meet held at Westlake High School, where they finished in fourth place as a team, behind Layton, Westlake and Fremont.

Individually, Kleimann, Garcia and Stevens (the son of coach Stevens) took first place among their divisional opponents. l

Herriman earns share of region title with gutsy victory over Riverton

I

n late January, the Riverton girls basketball team ground out a gutsy, two-point victory over Herriman on the Mustangs home court.

Three weeks later on Thursday Feb. 17, it was Herriman’s chance to return the favor.

In front of a raucous crowd, the Mustangs overcame their first half offensive struggles, pouring in 36 second-half points en route to a 56-48 victory at Riverton, earning Herriman a share of the region title.

“It was a mirror image of the game at our place,” said Herriman head coach Kent Smith after the game. “We expected the same thing, their senior night, region title on the line, we knew it was going to be a grind. Our whole game plan was to stay close and then have a shot in the fourth quarter. We played really, really well in the fourth quarter.”

Herriman kept it close, Smith said, due to their defense. Despite being undersized, the Mustangs were able to block driving lanes the Silverwolves were slicing through in the first half when Riverton led most of the way.

Up one heading into the fourth, Herriman elevated its game making key defensive stops, grabbing vital rebounds and scoring at pivotal moments to build momentum.

“We finally had multiple possessions in a row that we scored some, got some separation and held on,” Smith said.

Riverton led for most of the gritty, physical first half, which featured 18 fouls between both teams, and a 24-20 lead at halftime for the Silverwolves.

Herriman senior Lexi Jensen said they were playing individual basketball to start with, not moving the ball around like they planned.

“Once we started following the game plan of swinging the ball, not caring if we scored but the team scores, we started doing a lot better,” Jensen said.

Jensen herself was guilty of a poor first half she said, scoring four points, missing floaters she usually makes.

“I was just kind of in my head,” she said. “In the locker room at halftime, I had to reset and think about what I had to do to help my team win this game.”

With Herriman missing all its three-pointers in the first half, a forte of a team that averages seven three-pointers a game, the Mustangs came out aggressive to start the third quarter scoring three straight layups to take the lead.

“Starting the second half, we made a concerted effort to get to the basket,” Smith said. “We said, ‘OK, it’s going to be one of those games, go get buckets or fouls and we’ll try to outlast them.’”

The third quarter was a back and forth affair with six lead changes. Riverton’s Abigail McDougal hit back-to-back three-pointers putting the Silverwolves up 34-31. Herriman responded with a couple buckets at

the basket of its own retaking the lead 3534. McDougal then hit another shot from beyond the arc putting the Silverwolves up two, only for Herriman’s Mariah Mons— who finished alongside Jensen with a gamehigh 16 points—to immediately respond with a three-pointer of her own putting the Mustangs up 38-37 to end the quarter.

But it was the final period where Herriman slowly wrested control of the game, with Smith telling his team the words they needed to hear, according to Jensen. “[He] said, ‘All we have to do is play as a team and win this fourth quarter and you’re region champs,’” she recalled. “I think that just clicked in everyone’s brain and we all want that so we did what we had to do to accomplish that.”

Maybe no one more so than Jensen. She attacked the basket either getting layups or drawing fouls swishing the resulting free throws (she finished six-for-six from the line) knocking in seven of her 16 points in the fourth.

But it wasn’t just her scoring, Jensen was having to box out one of Riverton’s post players after switches, pulled down a big rebound off a missed Riverton free throw (a common thread on the night where the Silverwolves shot 58%) and saved a backcourt violation that led to a switch in the possession arrow.

And with 1:47 left and the Mustangs up 49-43, she got a steal leading to more free throws that would effectively seal the win.

“She just knows how to make winning plays,” Smith said of his star player. “She’s just a tough nosed girl that puts team first.

She could get a shot any time she wanted to, she's that good with the ball, but she plays team basketball and she's dang good. I'm lucky to have her.”

Jensen, signed to play at SUU next year, said she “just got locked in” for the crucial quarter.

“I knew what I had to do, I had to take care of the ball and get my teammates open and if it came back I had to make the shots to get us where we needed to be,” she said.

“It was just a mindset of doing the right thing every time I had the ball.”

The region championship, a year after winning its first, is another marker of progress for the Herriman girls basketball program. Over the last four years, not so coincidentally since Smith and Jensen both arrived, the team has won two region championships, six playoff games and were state runners-up last year. Prior to that, the program had never won a region championship, let alone a playoff game.

“I think we've arrived,” Smith said.

“We're not better than anybody, but we're as good as anybody. That's how we feel about it. And we're gonna be good for several more years to come.”

Jensen said they owe a lot of that success to their coach.

“He’s made a really positive impact which has affected all the girls,” she said.

“Because of that positivity, we bring it into the games and that’s what gets us through those grind-out fourth quarter games. I’m just really happy with where we’ve gotten these past four years. It’s been really cool to see us do things we’ve never done before.”

The final seedings for the 6A state playoffs were revealed Feb. 19 with Herriman garnering the No. 5 seed and a first-round bye. The Mustangs could meet Riverton again in the quarterfinals (March 1 after press deadline) as the Region 3 rivals were

drawn on the same side of the bracket. Jensen feels if they replicate their fourth-quarter performance from Feb. 17, they can feel confident for the playoffs.

“We just need to follow the game plan, do those simple things and make the easy plays and I think we'll go far at state,” Jensen said.

As for Riverton, the loss dropped them to 7-3 in region and into third place. But the 17-5 Silverwolves earned the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye.

While the loss stings, Riverton had to play most of the game without one of its best players, senior Belle Christensen, due to foul trouble. They also had another senior,

Megan Walker, out with an injury, and senior Anna Ross only just returned the day of the game from an upper body injury of her own. “[Anna] missed the last two weeks and that really threw us a wrench,” said Riverton head coach Jodi Lee. “We’re a different team when she’s on the floor, so I actually feel much better moving into next week than I did a couple days ago. I think we’re in a good place.

“We didn’t make some shots, had some defensive breakdowns, but that’s a very good team we just played.”

In a sport where only five players can take the court at a time, Riverton had a special situation this year with eight seniors.

And in a time when kids jump from school to school for more playing time or differences with a coach, Lee was grateful for the unique group of seniors she’s had.

“They’ve been loyal to me, loyal to Riverton, loyal to their team,” she said. “Honestly, they’re a dream to work with, they really are. I am so proud of them, I am heartbroken for them, but so proud of them at the same time.” l

Are electric buses a viable solution for Little Cottonwood traffic problems?

A

group of local elected officials, community activists and college students boarded a bus last month for a ride up Little Cottonwood Canyon. Their goal? To show that electric buses can be a viable solution for the canyon’s traffic problems.

The Utah Department of Transportation is currently in the middle of the process of narrowing down its list of proposals. From an original list of five possibilities, the department narrowed its consideration down to two: an enhanced bus system (along with widening the roads in the canyon) and the construction of a gondola.

Throughout its Environmental Impact Statement report, UDOT’s analysis of the enhanced bus system presupposes that those buses would run on diesel fuel. An assumption that Cottonwood Heights City councilwoman Ellen Birrell says is based on a myth that electric buses don’t have what it takes to make it up the steep slopes of the canyon.

“We’re going to urge UDOT to revisit their assessment,” Birrell told the City Journals.

The bus ride was organized by the University of Utah student group, Students for the Wasatch. They coordinated with Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall to use an electric bus that her office borrowed from California for a few days to demonstrate its versatility and viability to local legislators and elected officials.

So how did the bus fare with the challenge of climbing Little Cottonwood Canyon?

“We zipped up!” Birrell said. “And it was so quiet we could use our inside voices. It was delightful.”

“I would describe it as clean, fast, quiet and comfortable,” said Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski.

“I was skeptical, to tell you the truth, whether it could handle the climb up Little Cottonwood Canyon, but this bus had no problem.”

Not only was the bus able to keep up with other traffic as it made its way up the mountain, but it was able to recharge its battery on the way down through a process called regenerative braking. Because of this, the bus was able to make it up and down the canyon using only 3% of its battery.

Alta Mayor Roger Bourke, who hopped on board the bus for the final few minutes of the ride, was impressed with the experience and touted the vehicle’s benefits for the environment.

“We are faced with a worldwide catastrophe if we don’t get a handle on these greenhouse gasses,” he said.

“And this is the way to get a handle on it. This can be charged with renewable energy, which we’re getting more and more of. That’s the future.”

Birrell noted that the solution to traffic problems in the canyon doesn’t necessarily have to be contained to one big project that costs hundreds of million dollars, like the gondola or road expansion. Instead, she suggested that a better strategy would be to adopt multiple smaller changes. One change she said has already started working is the ski resort’s implementation of reserved parking spots.

gestion problem this ski season,” she said. “Some of the logical and practical solutions that many of us want to see phased in, that would be much less expensive than a gondola or lane expansion, are already reducing the traffic.”

A fleet of electric buses could also theoretically be purchased and deployed by next ski season, noted Students for the Wasatch member Claudia Wiese.

“It can be an immediate solution, as opposed to spending years on a project,” she said. l

An open book

I

was eight when I ran away from home. It was the summer of ’76 and my mother did the unspeakable. She banned a book in our home.

In the stack of books I’d checked out at the library, there was a paperback copy of “Jaws” I instinctually hid from Mom because she could be irrational. The book cover, with its looming shark and nearly-nude swimmer, might make her think the novel wasn’t “proper” for an 8-year-old.

With a plateful of homemade oatmeal cookies, I sat on my bed engrossed in shark attacks. My bedroom door opened and Mom (without knocking!) entered my room to put clothes away. Her mouth dropped open when she saw what I was reading. She grabbed it out of my hands and banned the book from the house.

How dare she!

I fumed and realized there was only one answer to such blatant oppression. I got my red suitcase and packed a nightgown, a change of clothes, my toothbrush and a Nancy Drew book. I stomped down the stairs, ignoring Mom as she stood in the kitchen doorway with her arms crossed.

Before I walked out of the house forever, I told her I couldn’t live with her cruelty any longer. I walked two blocks to my Aunt Judy’s house and announced I was moving in because Mom was an unreasonable tyrant.

I stayed the night, knowing Mom must regret her terrible behavior. I figured by the next day, she would be frantic with worry.

I make it a point to read banned books, buy banned books, promote banned books and encourage my daughters to do the same.

I figure if a book is so powerful it has to be banned or burned, that’s a book I need to read.

Anything that gets people’s knickers twisted and touches a literary nerve goes on my toread list.

Parents and lawmakers are increasingly trying to create laws that shelve books that don’t fit in with their (mostly conservative) ideals. When that happens, society loses. Didn’t you read the (ironically) banned “Fahrenheit 451?”

I agree that 8-year-olds don’t make the best choices, but if we control the curriculum, frame the narrative, and put a conservative slant on history, we’re not doing those 8-yearolds any favors.

In January, when a school board in Tennessee banned the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel, “Maus,” parents pushed back.

The Salt Lake County Library System has dozens of copies of the Holocaust story where the Jews are depicted as mice, Germans as cats, and Americans as dogs.

I was happy to see it has hundreds of hold requests.

Looks like I’m not the only one making sure I read things that make me uncomfortable.
