ummer has officially begun and the Herriman Yeti is ready to party!

Herriman residents are ready to trade in Chromebooks and backpacks for sunscreen and swim goggles. With the help of the Herriman Yeti, this is going to be the best summer yet.

First, who is this infamous Yeti? The Yeti (also known as an abominable snowman or “bumble”) resides in the Herriman hillside and is filled with Herriman pride. He loves attending city events, interacting with the community and contributes to delivering city messages.

“People love the Yeti,” said Tami Moody, assistant city manager. “Residents search for him high and low and he has created quite a social media buzz.”

Kids and parents alike embrace this white furry creature with the big blue smile.

“We began incorporating the Yeti into more of our messaging and he soon was a hit, becoming Herriman City’s official mascot,” Moody said.

The Yeti embodies the spirit of Herriman with his community pride and willingness to serve.

“He is easily recognized which makes him a great presence to push out important city information regarding community safety, community events, announcing new businesses, promoting city services and providing information about local government,” she said.

Successful Herriman soccer season ends in semifinals

T

he Herriman boys soccer team was 40 minutes away from returning to Rio Tinto Stadium for the 6A boys championship match. Senior captain Mason Ayers had knocked in an early goal in the opening minutes of their semifinal match against Skyridge, a one goal lead they’d comfortably held for the rest of the first half.

But then a Herriman player received their second yellow card, followed by a red card and an ejection.

Playing down a man, the Mustangs struggled to maintain possession for the rest of the half. Eventually, the Skyridge attack broke through for an equalizer midway through the second half. Then with just a minute and a

half left in regulation, the Falcons found the back of the net again for the game-winning goal.

The heartbreaking loss capped off what was otherwise a very successful season for the team. They finished with a 15-4 overall record, and a region-best 9-1 record.

They also showed improvement over the course of the season. On April 21, they lost to Bingham by a score of 5-0. Then in the final game of the regular season, with the region championship on the line, they avenged that loss with a 1-0 victory over the Miners. l

Mountain Ridge High School outstanding graduate: Making the best of difficult situations

S

arah Lingwall has attended three high schools in four years. While it was a difficult adjustment, she said moving to a new city and then being reassigned to a brand new high school after only one year, pushed her to become more outgoing.

“I had to learn how to make new friends and get out of my comfort zone,” she said. “Now, I’m beyond grateful that I moved and met the people that I did.”

Her efforts to make friends and be involved at school led to her peers selecting her as SBO President at Mountain Ridge High School this year.

“Sarah has worked so hard this year to get our school back on track after a weird first year at a new school,” Senior Class Vice President Haili Lino said. “Sarah is the type of person who will take the time out of her day or will put her problems aside to make sure the people around her are doing okay,” MRHS Student Government Adviser Richard Hoonakker said Lingwall has been an example of hard work, humility, and resilience while serving in student government during a year when so much of her role was impacted by COVID restrictions. He said she has been a positive influence on her peers, showing resilience and creativity whenever a school activity or event had to be cancelled or altered.

“She has a very unique balance of taking charge while still remaining humble,” he said. “She quickly delegates desirable jobs to her classmates while saving the behind the scenes work or unglamorous tasks for herself. She is very

good at not overlooking the little details that make a good event a great event.”

Lingwall represented MRHS as the World Languages Sterling Scholar, advancing in the competition to be named the state runner-up in her division. She is graduating with a 4.0 GPA. Lingwall, the third of 10 kids in her family, plans to continue her studies at BYU next year and then serve a mission for her church.

“I am so honored to know her,” Lino said. “And I cannot wait to see the things she does after high school.” l

Mountain Ridge girls lacrosse finishes undefeated in region play

T

o say Mountain Ridge’s girls lacrosse team had a remarkable first season would be an understatement.

The Sentinels finished with a perfect 12-0 region record (15-1 overall), had eight out of 10 starters named first team All-Region and were ranked the second best overall team in the whole state.

Head coach Angie Maughan knew her team had that kind of potential, but she thought maybe it would take a year or two to come together.

“They are a very young, talented team,” she told the Herriman Journal following a 14-2 senior night victory over Timpanogos. “I expected us to be contenders in the future. But they blew me away from the very first game.”

The team started the season out with a bang, winning their first five games by a combined score of 94-10. The lone blemish on the season: a 15-13 loss to crosstown rival Herriman.

Two of the teams’ strengths are its relentlessness teamwork.

Their teamwork and willingness to share the ball around is evidenced by the fact that the Sentinels have 11 players with 10 or more goals this season.

While they don’t depend on just one player, they do have several standouts.

One of those is senior Kylie Morten2/3/21 PM son, 11:21 a team captain who Maugahn said has a talent for getting those around her to work harder. Stats-wise, she leads the team in assists (29) and is second in goals (36). She also takes the team’s draws, which she wins at a high percent-

age (.659).

The only other senior on the team, Jo Miles, is the team’s goalie.

“Jo has worked her butt off this summer,” Maughan said. “The goalie she has become from last summer to now, is huge. She’s getting comfortable coming out of the goal, forcing turnovers and getting those ground balls.”

The Sentinels were ranked as the second best overall team in the state by the RPI system, earning them the No. 2 seed in the Division A bracket.

As opposed to most other sports which compete within their classification, the lacrosse postseason groups the sixteen best teams, no matter what classification they are in, into one bracket. Then the next sixteen best teams are placed into a separate bracket. So the girls Division A includes teams from smaller schools like Bear River (4A) and Waterford (2A). In fact, Mountain Ridge’s first game of the tournament pitted them against Ridgeline, a 4A school from Cache Valley, where the Sentinels trounced the Logan school 18-5.

Culinary students learn by catering, competing, creating

T

he churro cupcakes with dulce de leche filling, cinnamon frosting and a fresh churro on top were a hit at the wedding luncheon for Jenifer Glassey’s son.

“I even had to hide one of the cupcakes in the back because they went so fast and I wanted to be able to eat one,” she said. “I still crave those cupcakes.”

Glassey, who teaches in the Family and Consumer Sciences department at Herriman High School, said her guests were shocked when she told them the professional-looking cupcakes and the tres leches cake were made by high school students.

The students, who are a part of HHS’s ProStart culinary program, gained catering experience and enjoyed seeing guests enjoy their creations.

“I love to cook and I love that it brings people joy,” ProStart student Hailey Hellwig said.

The news quickly spread about the professional appearance and delicious taste of the students’ desserts and they received more catering requests.

When HHS FACS teacher Kristi Johnson had just 10 days notice for her wedding reception this spring, ProStart instructor Leslie Brock organized students to make three dozen lemon-raspberry tarts and three dozen churro cupcakes with caramel centers.

“They all worked really fast and made our special day even more amazing,” Johnson said. “The desserts were elegant, tasted amazing and were a complete hit.”

The students catered two more weddings this spring—for a student-teacher and for the mother of a student—and provided desserts for school and community events.

HHS CTE Coordinator Julianna Wing was proud to highlight students’ “legendary churro cupcakes” for the Jordan District FBLA state awards celebration dinner.

The catering jobs, which earn a small profit that is reinvested into the program, provide a professional experience for students.

“What we're learning from this is how to do real-world work,” ProStart student Chase Williams said.

Another student, Emma Gulbranson, said catering jobs have taught her the importance of consistency.

“We have to be consistent with all of the products we put out—they have to look all the same,” she said.

ProStart students also learn teamwork which prepares them for work in the culinary industry.

“Working in the culinary industry takes a really good work ethic—it's not easy stuff,” Hellwig said. “You really have to buckle down, get working and take your time to get things right the first time.”

pressure at food competitions. The national ProStart competition was cancelled this year, however, the Utah Restaurant Association hosted a state competition for 16 high schools in March. HHS’s team placed in the middle of the very close competition, with just 6.5 points between them and the second place team (Bingham.)

Whether the food they prepare is for a grade, a catering job, a competition or family members, students are expected to adhere to safety, sanitation and quality standards.

“They've learned that they have to have quality standards right from the beginning and that definitely transfers out into the real world when they're working at a restaurant,” Brock said. “Whatever they are putting out to the public has to have that standard, just like it does in class.”

Students get restaurant experience planning and preparing complete lunches—appetizers, entrees, desserts—for HHS faculty in an in-school restaurant.

“I really get on them about making sure that their food is consistent, that it is presented the way it should be presented and is presented well,” Brock said. “I refuse to serve something that doesn't look up to par to one of our faculty.”

ProStart students also run a business in the school cafeteria, called the Pro Pop, making and selling flavored sodas and cake pops.

They have developed 15 school-themed soda creations, such as the Mustang Royal, the Muddy Mustang and their most popular drink, Bad Decisions (Dr Pepper, raspberry and coconut syrups, with cream on top.)

Students graduate from the ProStart program with a ServSafe Manager Certificate, prepared to work in the restaurant industry or attend culinary school. Beginning next year, students will be able to get a headstart on a culinary degree—HHS will be offering concurrent enrollment culinary classes. l

he first and third place winning cars in the first Daybreak Soapbox Derby, held April 24, were made by a group of woodworking, auto, graphic design, engineering and art students and teachers from Herriman High School.

Team members included students Bella Jeffress, Emma Jones, Audrey Gribble, Arturo Alvarado, Christian Cluff, Jacob Ball, Noble Suman, Ashinti St. Clair and Lilly Tolman; and Technology and Engineering Instructor Brian Burke, Woodworking Instructor Steve Tanner, Automotive Instructor Larry Farnsworth and CTE Coordinator Julianna Wing.

“We had to build the car, tune the car and design the car, we had to vinyl the car and make it look good and how we wanted it to,” Ball said. “So, it brought in a whole bunch of different elements and people.”

Students built two cars—the white car and the blue car—from kits provided by their sponsor, Mountain America. They developed low-budget, creative ideas for modifying the car and adjusting the alignment and brakes.

Instead of purchasing professional weight kits, students got creative to add 78 pounds of weight to their blue car, using chunks of asphalt found on the road near the school and heavy things found in the auto shop.

Most of the work took place on Fridays, when students from various classes could meet to work together to design and modify the cars through trial and error testing.

“We had kids sit in the car and we’d push them down the hallways at school,” Burke said.

Ball said he applied what he’d learned in auto, engineering, woodworking and advanced tech classes to help modify the cars’ aerodynamics, wire the brakes and adjust the steering.

“We’ve learned much more hands-on skills,” he said. “In engineering [class], we do little projects, but nothing quite to this scale. So seeing this as an opportunity where we can implement theories into an actual project and actual tasks—it’s a big learning experience.”

The students also took the lead on designing the cars’ graphics, competing against business owners who paid for professional wraps to decorate their derby cars.

“We decided that it was better if our students—that they’d be more involved—if they did the design themselves,” Burke said.

Students used school equipment to design, print and cut vinyl graphics—such as the school mascot, a mustang—which they applied after they’d painted the wooden cars.

“There were a lot of challenges, but we still made it work,” said St. Clair, a graphic design student who was working with vinyl for the first time.

on the project. Tolman, a graphic design student, said she had some experience with tech design and decided to join the team because it would look good on a college application.

She was surprised when she found out it wasn’t just a high school competition.

“From a design perspective, it was kind of daunting to see all those professionally-made cars,” she said. “What I learned was, things that seem daunting at first, often lead to a lot of fun and more opportunities down the road.”

The white car went undefeated and the blue car only lost one race.

“The best part was for them to be able to see their actual car, that product of their design, actually be tested and, in this case, proven to be a winner,” Burke said.

t hasn’t taken long for Mountain Ridge High School to make its mark on the boys soccer scene.

The Sentinels finished their first full regular season with a 13-3 record, a 10-2 finish in 5A’s Region 7 and a first-place finish in the region. This all comes on the heels of a 1-2 start to the season.

Mountain Ridge opened for the 201920 school year but the COVID-19 pandemic shortened the boys soccer team’s inaugural season. That only delayed the Sentinels’ arrival, which head coach Eric Arthur said comes from a short amount of time for learning.

“After those first four games, our players, our guys are just really intelligent soccer players and they figured it out,” he said.

“They figured out how to work together, how to move together to find the space that each other are going to.

“They’ve always been a technically-gifted group. It just took a little bit for them to get in sync with their style and now that they have, they’re really a dangerous group of players.”

Mountain Ridge’s first four matches included three overtime contests, one of which included a shootout win over Alta after a scoreless draw. During the rest of the regular season, the Sentinels outscored their opponents 31-8 and found themselves in two overtime matches — a win and a loss — as well as five shutouts.

Arthur said those initial matches helped the Sentinels mature quickly and after having so many overtime matches, the team made a goal to stay out of that situation.

Senior Max Palmer said those four matches also helped the student-athletes learn a bit more about themselves.

“I feel like in the first four games, we were just trying to play an individual game and dribble a ton and just do it all ourselves and all be the star,” he said. “After those games, we really decided the best way to win was as a team.”

Fellow senior Tyler Moon said the original selfish mindset came from a lot of the players used to being the main guy on their club teams. The shift from selfish to selfless came after a realization.

“I think it was just realizing that every player has different strengths and if you can put them in those positions and maybe if they're better at certain things, then you can give them those situations and they can take care of them for you,” he said.

One benefit Arthur said he sees with having a new school is younger players get a chance to shine.

During last year’s abbreviated season, there were five seniors. This year, there are four. In both seasons, sophomores and freshmen obtained a lot of experience and it’s helping this season.

While Moon was one of Mountain Ridge’s top performers this regular season, there were numerous sophomores who scored goals while sophomore Eli Welch led the team in regular season assists. Defensively, sophomore Ben Maw led the way as goalkeeper.

Arthur said while the learning curve of last season was good for the underclassmen, he’s seen a group of tight-knit players who have helped each other grow.

“They really enjoy playing together and it’s been fun and it’s been exciting as we look to the future, as well, knowing just how young we are,” he said.

Moon described the chemistry as a group of guys who have a lot of energy, have fun and have bonded together on and off the pitch. Palmer said that solid chemistry does manifest itself on the field.

“It gives us the ability to trust each other, definitely, and connect well on the field,” he said. “Like, we know where players want it and we’re able to deliver it. That helps us to finish [offensively] and in defensive organization.”

With the first full season of the Sentinels’ soccer journey in the rearview mirror, Arthur said he hopes this year will serve as a catalyst for years to come.

“We’ve set a bar really high,” he said.

Herriman High School outstanding graduate: Violinist’s service is her song

M

adison Hansen began playing the violin at age 7 and her love of music has continued to grow. She has been trained by distinguished musicians and excelled in multiple music groups inside and outside of school. She has been concertmaster all three years in Herriman High School’s orchestra, and served as Orchestra President this past year.

HHS orchestra director Nicholas Jackson describes her as an expressive, thoughtful, and diligent student.

“Her attention to detail with her musicianship are matched only by her organization skills and focus as an academic student,” he said. “She has maturity beyond her age and represents the best of the best in the orchestra program.”

Hansen is an honor roll student, graduating with a 3.996 GPA and was named HHS’s Instrumental Music Sterling Scholar and the state sterling scholar runner-up in her division.

“Often, one of our Sterling Scholar candidates stands out; Madison is one of those candidates,” HHS Sterling Scholar Advisor Jackie Burr said. “Much more than her gift for playing the violin, Madison understands her talent can be used as a tool to serve others.”

During the initial COVID shutdown last spring, Hansen played her violin for neighbors who were stuck inside their homes. She and her siblings performed outdoor pop-up concerts for the community.

“I wanted people to know that through these difficult times, we could still stand strong,” she said.

She also performed for children in remote villages in Africa in 2019. She raised money to purchase violins for impoverished schools there.

“This trip taught me that music is a universal language and that even though I could not speak the language, I was still able to love and connect with them through music,” she said. “This principle has influenced me to always share my music so that I can experience the bonding of music.”

Hansen is headed to BYU to major in Violin Performance and to join an orchestra or string quartet.

“I love to perform,” she said. “Any opportunities available or offered to me, I take. Performing helps me learn how to control nerves. Not only this, I am able to share my music and do what I love.” l

Providence Hall High School outstanding graduate: Yearning for learning

W

hen she was younger, Leona Lombardi wouldn’t talk to her teachers or ask questions in class. Then, she discovered musical theater.

“I found that being able to portray a character gave me an opportunity to be someone who I’m not— the funky character or outgoing or just a totally different person,” she said. “Being those characters and being involved in a show, working with so many other people, really opened that door for me. I think that’s probably a big reason why it’s still part of my life—it definitely has changed who I am.”

Now she is not the quiet student, but the one who is actively asking questions. Her English teacher, Hannah Thompson, described her as passionate, self-motivated, and inquisitive.

“I love to ask questions on things that I’m interested in—I think it’s part of who I am,” Lombardi said. “Because if I want to get the education that I want, and I want to learn what I want, I do have to ask those questions.”

Lombardi is graduating with an International Baccalaureate diploma from Providence Hall High School. The IB program is an academically rigorous two-year program of study that is guided by student inquiry. IB instructor Catherine Jensen said Lombardi exemplifies the program’s qualities of inquiry, critical thinking, and a global mindset.

“She is dedicated to knowing everything there is to know and is also an excellent student,” Jensen said.

Music has played a large role in Lombardi’s life.

She said skills she’s learned from playing the piano most of her life have helped her be successful in other areas of her life.

“It definitely takes dedication—practicing every day is definitely not always fun,” she said. “So I think getting that motivation to do that again and again taught me how to be dedicated to things and be accountable for myself.”

Lombardi has been involved in numerous theater productions, with both acting and directing. She hopes to become a high school theater teacher. This past year, she was Theater Council President and was named PHHS’s Theater Sterling Scholar (and region finalist.) Lombardi also served her school and community in the National Honors Society and the WAY (Wellness Acceptance You) Kindness club at her school.

“What impresses me about her is how positive and upbeat she is always,” Jensen said. “She always has a smile on her face and she is always lifting up those around her.”

Real Salt Lake Academy High School outstanding graduate: From failing to flourishing

S

tone Lopez is graduating from Real Salt Lake Academy High School. But he almost didn’t.

“When he came to us in ninth grade, he did not look like he was ever going to Stone Lopez is graduating from Real Salt Lake Academy High School. But he almost didn’t.

“When he came to us in ninth grade, he did not look like he was ever going to get to graduation,” RSLAHS English teacher Janice Randall said. “But he actually is graduating this year and managed to take an AP class in the mix. He passed the English AP class, which is a huge achievement coming from someone who failed pretty much all his ninth grade classes. It’s a real success story for him.”

During his junior year, Lopez committed to doing better in school and started making up the credits from his freshman and sophomore years.

His senior year has been a stark contrast to his freshman year.

“Last term I got above a three point [GPA], a 3.3,” he said. “That’s definitely something that I was very proud of. I didn’t ever think that would ever happen.”

He also got to play in a couple of varsity games and was named Player of the Match in one of them.

“He loves sports but he couldn’t play for the first few years because he didn’t have the grades,” Randall said. “He was determined to play sports in 12th grade before he left high school.”

During his senior year, Lopez played volleyball, basketball and soccer for RSLAHS.

“My first two years, I just sat and watched everyone play,” he said. “In 10th grade, after I didn’t get the grades to play soccer. I was just like, ‘maybe I should just drop out and start working and save money.’”

But he didn’t want to disappoint his family, friends and teachers, who were giving him so much support and encouragement.

“We just kept saying, ‘You can do this, you can do this,’ and eventually he realized that, ‘Oh, hold on, I can do this,’” Randall said. “It was still a struggle, but he’s realized that people will work with him if he puts his heart and soul into it.”

Lopez was amazed by his teachers’ support.

“The teachers here, they just want to help everyone,” he said. “You ask them for help and they’ll help you. That’s what’s so nice about having been in a small school.”

Randall believes Lopez would have fallen through the cracks in a larger school.

“We do develop relationships with the kids that often, I think, do help them do better than they might elsewhere,” she said.

Lopez said his family has always encouraged him to do better in school.

“My dad didn’t graduate and he always told me that one of the worst things was seeing all his friends graduating, and not doing it, so that motivated me,” he said. “And I’m just wanting to have a better life than just being a dropout.”

get caught up quickly.

“Don’t sit on your butt and play video games like I did,” he said. “If you just do it when you’re supposed to, it’s a lot easier.”

Lopez is headed to Dixie State University to major in business.

Randall, who has been teaching for 37 years, is excited for the future Lopez has created for himself.

“You really want to see them succeed but you can’t do it for them,” she said. “And you hope and hope they’ll find it within themselves, and when they do, it’s the best feeling.” l

The Farmer’s Market returns to Herriman this summer

T

his summer, Monday nights at J. Lynn Crane Park provide a venue for local growers and vendors to gather and offer a variety of fresh, local produce and goods to the community in conjunction with the Hungry Herriman Food Truck Roundup.

Local growers are encouraged to bring fresh produce and products directly to the public by becoming a vendor at the market. Growers offer fruits, vegetables, a variety of flora, herbs, organics, cheese, eggs, honey, locally made jellies and other types of agricultural products.

Denise Christiansen and Natalie Rollinson, local professionals in the farmer’s market world, spearhead this project and are excited to get the market season rolling.

“We hope to create a good community vibe at the market,” said Denise Christiansen. “This has been an incredible undertaking all for the city and the residents.”

There are plenty of reasons to support a small-town farmers market: collecting fresh produce, supporting farmers and their families and encouraging small local entrepreneurs in the areas of homemade crafts, food artisans, artists and musicians.

“My experience is market and project management,” Christiansen said. “I have been a vendor at markets and I know what people want to share with the community.”

The community of Herriman is ready for this local endeavor. Gardeners that participate in the community gardens are encouraged to bring their extra produce to the market. “‘Support Local’ is the phrase of 2021. It is so important to support everyone in our community and the community,” Christiansen said.

Local kids from Herriman are encouraged to work at

the market. The community comes together and gets support from the city.

Support comes in many ways. This year, this market offers SNAP & Double Up food bucks.

Herriman Police Department receives training on how to interact with people with autism

A

pril happens to be Autism Awareness Month, but that’s not why the Herriman Police Department received special training on how to improve interactions with individuals with autism. Nor was it because the Utah legislature recently passed HB334, which requires law enforcement agencies to undergo such training.

“We had already been looking to bring Natalie Castro to the department for a while,” said Operations Division Commander Zachary Adams. “It just so happened to fall within Autism Awareness Month.”

Castro is the founder of Pieces of Inspiration, an organization that promotes home design standards that are conscious of the unique needs of those with autism.

She previously operated a Pediatric Therapy office, also with an emphasis on helping families of individuals with autism. Part of that included developing a training program for law enforcement agencies.

“I think it’s just having the police officers understand the perspective of the person, and helping them to connect with them,” Castro told the Herriman Journal.

“Being able to help [the officers] understand their thinking process, or how they can be overstimulated by sensory things like light or touch.”

Castro’s passion for raising awareness about autism comes from her relationship with her own sister, Angie, who has autism.

“She and I had a lot of interactions with law enforcement when she was little,” Castro said about what inspired her to design the training programs.

Castro spent three hours with members of the Herriman Police Department, training them how to recognize a person with autism, as well as how to best interact with them. Adams said that it was a very effective training for his fellow officers.

“When we get there, we have a better idea of understanding how to identify if a person has autism,” he said. “If they have an object that helps them focus, it’s important that we don’t interfere with that, that we give them space.”

The police department is now looking to expand on that training by searching for opportunities for its officers to interact with individuals with autism in a casual setting so they can continue to develop their awareness and sensitivity.

The training is part of a broader effort by the department to adopt progressive policies and procedures to ensure that they serve and protect all of Herriman’s residents (as well as to avoid becoming the face of a tragedy like other departments around the country in the past year).

“I think we’re always looking for ways to improve our interactions with our community. That includes all members in our community,” Adams said. l

ne year after the economic recession caused by the coronavirus pandemic began, Utah’s economy has emerged as one of the strongest in the nation. Utah’s unemployment rate in April was 2.8%, down from 2.9% in March and nearly as low as it was before the pandemic.

Utah is now tied with South Dakota and Nebraska for the lowest unemployment in the nation.

Utah also has the second-highest job growth in the nation, ticking up 2.5% in the last 24 months. This is just behind Idaho’s job growth of 3.9% in the same time period. In fact, Utah and Idaho are the only two states that have added jobs in the last two years. Utah added 35,600 jobs over the past two years, with professional and business services (+15,700) leading the growth.

Other sectors that saw notable gains were construction (+11,900); trade, transportation and utilities (+9,800); financial activities (+8,800); and manu-

facturing (+6,900).

However, the government (-10,500); leisure and hospitality (-7,600); and natural resources (-1,400) sectors have all lost jobs in the past 24 months.

While the strong job market and low unemployment are very positive for Utah, our state is once again struggling with a labor shortage. Simply put, there are not enough people in the Utah labor force to meet demand for workers. If this continues for too long, it could constrain potential economic growth, especially for smaller companies that must compete with larger employers for these workers.

Brothers harness burger powers to create local restaurant chain

T

he sizzling question of summertime - what does it take to make the best burger? It’s simple: hard work, high-quality ingredients and an appreciation for the community. Lucky for Herriman residents, that is exactly what JCW’s dishes up.

Meet John Christian “Chris” and Clay Williams, brothers and co-founders of JCW’s - The Burger Boys. Since their first store opened in 1998, these local burgermeisters use their history to create the best experience possible for their customers.

“We grew up working at family-owned restaurants,” said Chris Williams. “You learn a lot about the hospitality industry and teamwork when you start at age 12.”

Fast-forward 18-plus years, thousands of hours spent honing their skills in the restaurant industry, and the brothers were ready to start up their own burger joint.

“A lot of people want to open a restaurant, but they really don’t know what is entailed,” said Clay Williams. “But when you work in a restaurant, you know how much work it takes and you need to be invested in the business.”

This business instantly became a family affair. Family members rallied and all hands were on deck. From planting flowers, interior decorating and cleaning tables, the Williams family and friends helped make it happen.

Chris’ wife, Libby, was there from the beginning and can testify.

“We have always wanted our family to be a part of this business and culture,” said Libby Williams. “Even with four young children at home, we wanted to make sure that everyone was involved and learned how to work hard together.”

Now, each member of the family has had a hand in the

business and tout that with pride.

Why did they decide on the name JCW’s? It stands for the brothers’ first names and last name, John Christian and Clay Williams. At the time of the first opening, a good friend and mentor, Jim Tripplet, told them that they needed something to describe what they were really selling.

“Jim tagged us ‘The Burger Boys,’” Chris said, “and it has stuck ever since.”

“We’ve also heard it stand for ‘Just Can’t Wait’ to eat there,” Clay said.

There is a reason for this success. JCW’s only carries the finest meats and ingredients for their entrees and desserts. They also focus on buying from local vendors.

“We try to buy the best products out there,” said Chris.

Judging from the one third lb. of 100% choice AAA ground chuck used in the burgers, fresh golden-fried halibut, local produce and premium ice cream loaded into the famous Oreo shake, JCW’s takes quality seriously.

They also attribute their success to providing superb customer service and an inviting work environment. With 240260 employees (150 full-time) working at their five locations, JCW’s focuses on hiring locals to contribute to their community.

“During the pandemic, we wanted to make sure that we could do what we could to retain and value our employees,” Chris said. “We did not lay anyone off, stayed open and safe.”

JCW’s also used this trying time to focus on the good.

Turning lemons into lemonade, JCW’s spent the past year refining their menu and focusing on the efficiency of their eatery.

In addition, JCW’s is active in all the communities that they serve.

Dive into summer fun at Salt Lake County outdoor pools

I

f you needed another sign that things were returning to normal, here’s a good one: the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation outdoor pools opened Memorial Day weekend! The pools are scattered throughout the county and will stay open through the summer.

The county advises patrons to check their website at www. slco.org for updates on COVID restrictions including mask requirements. In general, those who are fully vaccinated do not need to wear masks.

Most of the pools have fun features like lap lanes, leisure areas, zero-depth entry, ADA accessibility, kids play areas, diving boards, sunbathing areas or slides.

All have lifeguards on duty during operating hours.

Opening hours, times and prices differ slightly for each location, so it’s wise to call ahead.

And for an extra fun and exclusive event, many of the pools are available after hours to rent for private parties.

A first place finish on the girls’ side (with 199 points) and a second palace finish for the boys (155 points) powered Bingham High School to the overall region championship, with a total score of 354 points.

There is great satisfaction in successfully providing for oneself and one’s family, but when someone falls upon hard times, shortterm government assistance can be helpful to get residents back on their feet. We must recognize, however, that government assistance shouldn’t be relied upon forever, and that helping people find jobs and contribute to their community is vital for them and the rest of us. We need the expertise and skills that our Salt Lake County residents have to offer.

In the midst of the pandemic, when joblessness was on the rise, the federal government took measures to subsidize state unemployment payments across the nation. This was intended to keep jobless individuals and families afloat during a time of economic uncertainty. While some states are still struggling, Utah is performing exceptionally well.

Our unemployment rates are among the lowest in the nation, and we are one of two states that actually had a net gain in jobs in 2020.

In fact, many businesses are struggling to find employees to fill their open positions as they reopen and strive to return to pre-pandemic levels of business. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many “Help Wanted” signs and advertisements before.

Because of the economic trajectory of

our state, Governor Spencer Cox recently discontinued Utah’s participation in those earlier mentioned federal unemployment subsidies. This was done, in part, to combat what are called “perverse incentives,” meaning incentives that attempt to solve a problem but actually prolong or worsen the problems they are meant to solve. In this case, federal unemployment subsidies were intended to help those who could not find employment, but by continuing these benefits in good economic times, we would be disincentivizing those who are unemployed from finding gainful employment in a strong job market. We want government to avoid perverse incentives, and instead encourage people to find a long-term path to success.

There are certainly extenuating circumstances that make it difficult for people to work, but for those who can work, please know that there are plenty of people hiring and you are most certainly wanted! If you are looking for a job, I encourage you to check out any number of job posting websites. You can visit the state’s employment website at jobs.utah.gov and see if there’s a good fit for you. Our workforce is better with you in it.

Our quality of life is better when we take an active role in contributing to our families, neighborhoods and communities.

Before COVID, when the hubbie and I used to travel, I’d book us in places that provided breakfast, because I love me a good breakfast buffet.

At one hotel, the breakfast bar offered freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and I couldn’t resist. I don’t usually drink fruit juice because it has so much sugar, which is hilarious because I have no problem downing an entire box of Milk Duds.

Anyway. I poured myself a cup of beautiful, pink grapefruit juice and was walking back to our table when a herd of unruly children came dashing around the corner and crashed into me, spilling grapefruit juice all over my shirt and the floor.

I stood there dripping and waiting for an apology that never came. The monsters ran past me to fill their plates with bacon. I eyed them scornfully, poured more juice and put on my Hat of Judgement.

What kind of mother lets her kids douse perfect strangers with grapefruit juice? What heathen had failed to teach these kids manners?

I got back to my table and told my husband to move so I could take his seat because he had a better view of the dining room. I needed to see the parents of these miscreants and judge them accordingly.

licious intent. Through narrowed eyes, I watched the kids eat all the bacon, touch all the bananas, grab several muffins and gallop back to their table, where their mom sat staring at her phone.

My judgement level increased. This neglectful mother didn’t realize her childish baboons were running amok; she had no idea they spilled juice all over me, and she was too involved in her social media and texting to be a good mother.

Verdict rendered. Guilty as charged.

Gavel pounded.

Oh, it felt good to be so superior.

But then my stupid brain stepped in.

doesn’t like to cause trouble. “Perhaps you’re being a bit harsh.”

“Shut up, brain. I’m busy.”

Instead of shutting up, my brain brought up a memory of my daughters. We were at an all-you-can-eat-buffet and the girls were not sitting like civilized humans. They were fighting, dropping food all over the floor, running back for seconds and thirds, and taking every single brownie from the dessert bar.

They were animals. And I just sat there, so happy for the break from making dinner.

I’d been that mom I was judging. My daughters had often run amok. If I’d had a cell phone when my kids were little, I would have been on that phone all the damn time. I slowly removed my Hat of Judgement and reevaluated the current situation.

I turned to my husband and said, “It’s just juice. They’re just kids. She’s just a mom.”

He didn’t know what I was talking about, but he chewed his bacon, nodded, and said, “That’s good.”

Suddenly, I was teary-eyed and felt a camaraderie with this mother. She was in the trenches, doing her very best. Aren’t we all?

The more I practice dropping judgement, the easier my life is. It’s exhausting calling out everyone’s behavior. There are better ways to spend my time, like drinking fresh grapefruit juice and remembering when my kids were wild animals.

ummer has officially begun and the Herriman Yeti is ready to party!

Herriman residents are ready to trade in Chromebooks and backpacks for sunscreen and swim goggles. With the help of the Herriman Yeti, this is going to be the best summer yet.

“We began incorporating the Yeti into more of our messaging and he soon was a hit, becoming Herriman City’s official mascot,” Moody said.

The Yeti embodies the spirit of Herriman with his community pride and willingness to serve.

“He is easily recognized which makes him a great presence to push out important city information regarding community safety, community events, announcing new businesses, promoting city services and providing information about local government,” she said.
