HERRIMAN FARMER’S MARKETPLACE TO SHOWCASE LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS

. Lynn Crane Park is the place to be in Herriman on Monday nights. Located at 5373 Main St., the park is home to the Herriman Farmer’s Marketplace which runs every Monday from 5 to 9 p.m. through Oct. 10.

Herriman residents Natalie Rollinson and Denise Christiansen started the market last year and are excited to introduce new vendors to the community.

“About 40 of our vendors are local Herriman residents that have small businesses that are selling at the farmer’s market,” Rollinson said. “We’re very excited about lending support to shop local and support small business, but we also just want the community to come out and get together.”

More than 60 vendors each week offer fresh produce, local honey products, homemade baby clothes, jewelry, baked goods, gluten-free items, handmade candies and more. Paired with the Hungry Herriman food truck league, which meets on the same night, city residents have lots of options to choose from.

Residents enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program can bring their Horizon cards to shop at the market for fresh fruits and vegetables.

“This is a place to show that Herriman cares about each other, provides service to each other and helps people in need,” Rollinson said. “It’s fun to get out to Continued page 4

What the West General Plan means for you

I

n May, the Salt Lake County Council stamped approval on a nearly 200 page West General Plan that took over 125 meetings across four years to create.

The plan covers an area on the west side of the valley that is in unincorporated Salt Lake County, which means the land is not part of any existing city. In fact, most of the land is privately owned by residents and businesses, the largest being Rio Tinto. Property owners have the first say in what happens on their land. So what’s the point of the plan if the county can’t develop the area on their own?

“A general plan is mandated by the state,” Jordan Carroll said, communications manager in the office of regional development.

“There wasn’t one before. This was very much needed. It had been attempted in the past but never completed or passed.”

A general plan is just what it sounds like.

A foundation for future development to build on.

“General plans…are very broad and visionary,” Carroll said. “We can really look at preservation and development and transportation and conservation and recreation and trails on a regional level.”

To use trails as an example, if there is a high level idea, then perhaps there could be a connecting pathway across many cities, like the Jordan River trail. Development decisions would be made with plans that would benefit multiple cities at once.

If a property owner wants to do something different with their land than what it has now, they will need to approach the County Planning Commission and Council for input and approval. This is when the plan comes into play.

“Developers or land-owners don’t necessarily have to look at the plan,” Carroll said. “[But], the planning commission and County Council is going to refer to this and it would

heavily impact their decisions.”

The plan is not something that will come into play very soon.

“This is set out [to influence the next] 30+ years at this point,” Carroll said.

No development will take place until landowners decide to do something. Rio Tinto will finish their mining before they make any changes.

The goals of the plan include conservation of water and environment, transportation, land use and housing preferences, parks and trails, economic growth, utilities to power the growth and public safety.

These goals include: Use water and energy conservation tools Protect the Great Salt Lake ecosystem Avoid ‘leapfrog development’ (using

space wisely) Incorporate town centers Allow accessory dwelling units Mix in affordable housing and build more ‘middle-housing’ as well as traditional single-family homes Build connecting roads to established major highways, like I-215, Bangerter Highway, etc.

Connect cities with trails and bicycle lanes Incorporate public transportation Plan events and programs to attract people to new spaces The full plan can be viewed at slco.org/ west-plan. l

Jessica Bangerter has lived in Herriman for 20 years. Two months ago, she started a mobile drink bar, Ground to Earth, that she runs with her mother, Jo Ingram, and her daughter, Sierra Zymola. Her husband Bennett does all the tech work.

Ground to Earth specializes in coffees, teas, sodas, lemonades, shaved ices and Redbull infusions.

This is her first year at the Herriman Farmer’s Marketplace and she’s excited to meet more people from the community.

“The farmer’s market is such an exciting place to be,” Bangerter said. “We are grateful to be able to participate every week. It’s a wonderful time to chat with locals and get to know other business owners.

We are so grateful for the opportunity.”

$50 for a single cupcake? Yes, when it goes to a good cause

endy Williams wanted to help the people of Ukraine, but she wasn’t sure how. And she knew she wasn’t alone in feeling that way.

“I could see that a lot of people really wanted to help. They just seemed at a loss on what to do, where to do it and how.

People seemed to be a little frustrated. The majority of people are so kind and so sad over everything,” said Williams, a retiree who moved to Draper in recent years.

Inspired by her pastor, Nate Taylor of Corner Canyon Church, she came up with the idea of a church bake sale. “He makes you want to do things. He’s amazing and he’s so supportive of the needs of the people,” Williams said. She approached Taylor with her idea and he enthusiastically agreed.

Taylor said the people of Ukraine had been “on his prayer radar,” but he hadn’t planned a logistical way to help. “It’s really just such a sad situation,” he said of the war.

Williams set about enlisting other volunteers. They decided on a suggested donation bake sale with no set pricing, and they would welcome any donations, big or small. She worried that if no one came, they might feel the need to suggest $50 per cupcake in hopes of raising enough funds.

Williams personally baked 10 pumpkin pies, five cheesecakes and more than 400 cookies. All kinds of goodies rolled in from other church members and volunteers, including bread pudding made by the pastor’s mother-in-law who happened to be visiting from out of town.

The volunteers erected a big tent on the church grounds on 12883 S. 1300 East and decorated with blue and yellow, the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Williams learned the blue represents the sky and the yellow represents wheat of which Ukraine is a big producer.

The day of the bake sale, April 23, brought wind, rain, snow and some sunshine. But inclement weather didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits because it was all for a good cause.

“Everybody there had a good time and it was important for people to be able to do this,” Williams said. “People were so generous, some of them did pay $50 for a cupcake!”

Mrs. Utah American, Amanda Brady of Herriman, attended and helped with the fundraiser by spreading the word on social media. “My platform for the pageant is ‘Be The Good.’ It’s about how people can show up in small and simple ways to help their community. When I heard about Wendy’s bake sale, I knew just by showing up, that would support her. That’s what we

learn to do for one another is just show up.

I wanted to make sure the message she was putting out there was shared,” Brady said.

In the process of putting on the event, Williams learned of a woman of Ukrainian descent who lives with her American husband in Utah. The couple attend both Corner Canyon Church and the Slavic Evangelical Baptist Church in Holladay. That was just the connection Williams needed to make sure the donations would go to help the refugees of Ukraine as she and everyone involved intended. “That was a godsend because we were concerned about where to take these people’s hard-earned money,” Williams said.

Less than three weeks after the fundraiser, Williams and Taylor drove to Holladay to deliver a check for $2,253.25 to Pastor Andrey Benkovskiy and his cousin, Deacon Alex Benkovskiy, at their church.

“We were really glad and thankful for everybody to remember what’s happened in Ukraine. Our reaction is ‘Wow, this is great!’ We will send the funds to Ukrainian people who need it. We usually work with pastors in Ukraine. We will send it to people we trust,” Andrey said.

The Benkovskiys said their church has been in Utah for 30 years, the last 17 in the Holladay building. Services are in Russian with translation into English offered by a church member. Andrey’s father is Ukrainian and his mother is Russian.

“In our church, we help people from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus. We pray for a stop to the war, we pray for peace,” he said. According to Andrey, the Holladay church is currently helping two young Ukrainian refugee families who’ve come to Salt Lake. Alex said their church has already sent donations to people in Ukraine a few times since the war began.

“I was so thankful it was a community effort with help from the Lord to bring this together…to help people who are hurting.

It meant the world to me,” Taylor said.

Williams, who now flies both the Ukrainian flag and an American flag at her home, said she’d strongly consider doing a fundraiser again. “I’m up for anything, even joining with a much bigger crowd if I got a call from someone who wanted to do something even bigger. Most of the people that came to buy goodies and donate were saying they just didn’t know how to help and they thanked me for doing this. That was the answer for me. I wanted people to have a vessel to do this and I want to make it grow.” l

Outstanding teachers recognized

A

lisha Neil, an agriculture teacher at Mountain Ridge High, was selected as one of Jordan Education Foundation’s top 11 Outstanding Teachers of the Year.

Department chair Kim Newbrough said Neil works extra hours to ensure students are prepared for competitions.

“She's very passionate about what she does and it shows,” Newbrough said. “She wants everybody to share that passion and the love of agriculture that she has.”

Of the many teachers who have been recognized this year, many exemplify this level of passion and determination to see their students succeed, and are seen as role models for their colleagues.

Daisy DeMarco, a third grade teacher at Silver Crest Elementary School, was recognized by both the Jordan Education Foundation and the Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce.

“Daisy is a teacher with a passion for learning, creativity, appreciating nature, service in the community and using technology in the classroom,” Launi Drecksel, a colleague, said.

DeMarco knows that when she is excited to teach, her students are excited to learn.

“If it's something I'm into, that passion and that energy carries over and the kids become passionate and energetic about it, too,” she said.

Often her teaching methods are inspired by her students’ interests.

“I'll go off of what the kids are excited about and interested in,” she said. “I take that passion, that excitement and turn it into something that fits what I need to do in my curriculum.”

Silver Crest Elementary administrators are impressed with DeMarco’s attentiveness to each student’s individual needs.

“Daisy is an amazing teacher who assures that every child in her class gets what they need to succeed,” an administrator said.

Two of Herriman Elementary’s teachers were recognized, one by JEF and one by Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Principal Bobbie Nixon said the two teachers, Kelly Wyatt and Heather Richardson, are two of her favorites.

Nixon said she can depend on Wyatt to help any child, no matter what their struggle. That’s why Wyatt’s third grade class has some of the top test scorers in the school each year.

“She is so good at finding the holes, or finding what students need, and filling them,” Nixon said. “She's super-talented that way—she's just so good with those struggling learners. And she's great with management—her classroom was like a well-oiled machine.”

Nixon said Richardson is one of the favorite teachers of many students, staff members and parents because she takes an inter-

est in people, is constantly happy and is kind and creative.

“Part of her success is that kids want to learn because they like her so much,” Nixon said.

Richardson has been teaching for 11 years.

“I love my job because the transformation of these little minds at the age of 5/6 is truly remarkable,” Richardson said. “They are little sponges that soak up everything I teach. Every day is truly a new day, and they have such an excitement for school and life at this age. That makes my job so fun!”

Richardson and Wyatt are role models to other teachers. Both work with interns and student teachers and serve on the JELL academic leadership team at Herriman Elementary.

“Because of their personalities and the kinds of things that they do in a classroom, they inspire or mold other teachers,” Nixon said. “And so, before you know it, the standard gets higher and higher because both of them believe that all students can learn at a high level. And so it helps everyone on their team to think that way.”

Nixon was thrilled to have two of her teachers recognized by community organizations. She admits it’s hard to choose when she has so many deserving teachers.

DeMarco agrees that there are many teachers who should be celebrated, too.

“When you win an award like that, you look at your colleagues, and see a lot of people could have won this award,” DeMarco said. “You don't do it alone, in a sense. There are so many people—those mentors and friends—you learn from and that you talk about things with or that helped get you to this point.”

Debate coach wins national award

P

rovidence Hall High School debate coach Steve Porter was awarded the National Diamond Award at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, held June 12-17.

To earn the diamond award, coaches must earn 15,000 points, which they accrue through debate team participation, student achievement, public service and leadership work.

“This is a big accomplishment for Steve,” colleague Scott Pettit said. “It signifies that, number one, he's put together a successful program, and number two, that as an individual, he has made a tremendous sacrifice of time and commitment to his team and has stuck with it even through all the challenges.”

High school debate is a demanding extracurricular activity, with competitions running nearly every weekend from October to March. Porter is exceptionally dedicated—he even went to the 2019 state tournament the day after his daughter was born. That was the year the team won state for the first time and became the first PHHS organization to earn a state title.

“They love to win and Providence Hall has become a pretty formidable team under Steve Porter,” said Pettit, who coaches the Summit Academy High School debate team. “But above that, it's being a quality individual, and so he really instilled that into his team. I've seen him work with students and help them realize that winning is one thing, but it's what they're learning and what they're doing, which is the most valuable thing to them.”

Porter has won other leadership awards but is always quick to shift the focus off himself. “ The kids and their experiences is what this is all about,” he said. “It's not about me or winning any awards or anything like that. If I'm just focusing on the award, I'm doing it wrong,” Porter said.

Porter’s focus is on teaching his debate students life skills such as resilience, sportsmanship and growth mindset.

“We're not trying to label ourselves by our worst rounds,” Porter said. “We're just looking at everything as an opportunity to grow.”

Students said Porter is a supportive coach.

“There has never been a time where I was stuck on a case or a rebuttal and he wasn't there to help me work through it,” said McKenzie Capito, who has twice qualified for nationals.

Instead of focusing on winning, Porter encourages his students to enjoy the process. They often play games between stressful rounds at tournaments.

“It is never about the placements or the points with him, it’s always about the

effort and the experience,” recent graduate Emilia Rhodes said. “He has our team do shout-outs on the way home to people on the team that we think did well at the tournament, and always makes sure that our effort is recognized.”

Rhodes was fairly new to debate when she won at district this year to qualify for nationals.

“This was my first win, and I attribute it to my coach,” she said. “Yes, I put in a lot of hard work, but it was him that pushed me to do so. He taught me how to be a confident speaker even when I didn’t feel that way. There is a reason Porter has his first diamond—he gets his NSDA points from his students, and they would not be as successful as they are today without his guidance and unwavering support.”

Since Porter became debate coach in 2016, the PHHS debate team has finished in the top three at state each year. Learning to play, playing to learn at free summer program

thlos Academy, located at 12309 S. Mustang Trail Way, is providing free summer activities for children ages 5 and up on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8-10 a.m. Any child can attend, not just those who attend the school. No registration is required, but an adult must sign children in and out.

Third grade teacher Carly Hooper said the summer activities keep kids connected with each other and gives them something to do.

“It gives them a little break from being at home and from being on video games,” she said. “Our goal is for them to have a friend and to be a little bit active.”

The activities also keep kids engaged in learning. Kids can spend the two hours using the Waterford program in the computer lab, which provides engaging literacy and math skills games that adjust to each child’s level. The games prepare preschoolers for school, and help older students avoid the “summer slide.” The program is also dual-language, which helps ELL students improve their English skills.

Ademaris Ramirez brings her son to play in the computer lab to prepare him for kindergarten. The computer games help him develop English language skills and get him used to a school environment, both of which she hopes will ease his transition into school this fall.

She said her 5-year-old loves playing on the computer.

“I like that he is playing and he’s also learning,” she said.

Younger students spend the whole session in the computer lab, occasionally taking a break to engage in physical activities. Kids aged ten and older can move to the gym at any time to play a volleyball game, work on their basketball skills or train with an athletic performance coach in the weight room.

The summer program is a continuation of two of the school’s character pillars: Prepared Mind and Healthy Body.

Athlos staff members facilitate the various activities. Katelyn Perkins, who will be working as a paraprofessional next year, is helping in the computer lab as a way to get to know the students. Hooper, who has taught at Athlos for three years, facilitates games in the gym with the older kids, but occasionally pops into the computer lab to say hi to her former students.

Athlos’ Executive Director Sam Gibbs loves to see this connection between kids and teachers. He said staying engaged in learning activities is important for kids, but so is staying connected with their peers and with their school.

“I just want the school to be a resource for the community,” Gibbs said.

Athlos provides many community resources, such as a community food pantry.

This fall, Athlos will be offering low-cost childcare before and after school, with homework help and enrichment classes.

Several community groups use the school building during off-hours including two scout troops, a tumbling class and a youth theater program. A local church congregation holds their weekly Sunday meetings there, as well. l

Herriman family wins Disney World vacation from Loveland Living Planet Aquarium

erriman resident Crystal Baughman saw the announcement that the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium would soon celebrate its 7 millionth guest, but she didn’t think much about it.

When she took her young children to the aquarium on May 25, she hadn’t made an online reservation and her entrance to the aquarium was delayed. That delay won her family a Disney World vacation package, including four round-trip airfare tickets to Orlando, a four-night stay at Hyatt Regency Grand Express and a $1,000 Disney Gift Card.

“When I walked through [the entrance], I thought, there are a lot of people here with cameras, and they’re all smiling at me,” Baughman said. “I was super shocked because we don’t ever win anything. We love the aquarium and we just got a membership. This makes our experience even more amazing.”

Swire Coca Cola partnered with the aquarium to provide the attendance prize package. Loveland Living Planet Aquarium (12033 Lone Peak Pkwy.) is home to more than 4,000 animals representing more than 600 species.

Educational support personnel recognized for outstanding contributions to schools

J

ordan Education Foundation Executive Director Mike Haynes was thrilled to give educational support personnel the opportunity to realize how much they're valued by the community.

The JEF board selected eleven outstanding ESPs from Jordan District to receive $1,000 and to be recognized at a Jordan District board of education meeting.

"The ESPs are our backbone of our schools—those in the front office, the lunch ladies, they're the bus drivers and everyone else who make the schools run,” Haynes said.

“Without the ESP employees, education would fail. They have a perspective that nobody else does. They can identify students who have needs and help support those needs through their effort; they're really miracle workers.”

Maricarmen Garcia is an Administrative Assistant who coordinates the 23 members of the Student Services department for Jordan School District.

“Carmen knows every single person and makes them each feel an important part of the team,” a colleague said.

She also provides translation services and a positive energy to the department.

“As Student Services continues to grow, so does her common skill set and abilities,” a colleague said.

Cari Minnesota is an administrative assistant for the Office of the Administrators of Schools, with responsibilities ranging from coordinating school fees, maintaining the district website and managing the drivers education program.

“She is a driving force in getting state grants to help with projects such as upgrading a car fleet or building awnings to better protect and secure driver education vehicles.”

“Cari has incredible patience, knowledge, compassion and understanding and is an asset to her department and the entire Jordan School District.”

Marilyn Smith, an administrative assistant for the Office of the Administrators of Schools, is responsible for student overnight travel trip experiences for the district.

“She's constantly problem-solving to ensure proper paperwork and processes are being followed. She has helped create and simplify the paperwork process easier for schools to know and follow what is expected.”

South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey introduced the winners to the Board.

“We all know that our schools would not be the amazing places they are without these folks without our education support professionals and all they do to keep schools going strong,” she said.

Herriman Arts Council’s ‘Cinderella’ brings a new twist to a classic tale

ans of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” will love the Herriman Arts Council production of the hit musical.

Along with Cinderella, Prince Charming, the fairy godmother and the wicked stepmother and stepsisters, this summer’s musical incorporates some inventive and surprising elements.

“The special thing about this production is we are flying in it,” said Kristin Housley, the show’s director. “You’ll get to see Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother flying and we have an 8-year-old girl that will also fly.”

Inspired by the acclaimed 1997 television movie starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, this version of “Cinderella” is full of originality, beauty and elegance, with an updated message.

“Yes, Cinderella needs Prince Charming, but what we’re trying to portray is that the prince also needs Cinderella,” Housley said. “In this day and age, I don’t think it’s politically responsible to tell the story that a woman needs a man, but a man doesn’t need a woman. We emphasize that both of them needed each other and found each other magically.”

Mobile Covid testing sites operating for summer

ree mobile Covid testing sites were opened by Nomi Health this summer to support the “Test to Travel” program.

Each site is providing tests on a firstcome, first-served basis and are requesting proof of insurance.

“Nomi Health’s Covid testing services are just one part of our offerings that’s evolving how we deliver care to patients,” said Sean Arroyo, Nomi Health vice president of operations. “As we're seeing an increase in testing demand across the state, we truly believe care should be where you are when you need it and that’s what we’re delivering.”

Locations will exclusively operate as Covid testing sites at no cost to Utah residents.

Unified track offers athletes of all abilities chance to compete

I

n late spring, high school athletes from across Utah met to compete at the Utah High School Activities Association-sanctioned unified track meet.

About 25 teams were there to compete, which is up from 15 teams in previous years, with some traveling to Copper Hills High from as far away as Cedar City, to take to the track, according to Courtnie Worthen, Unified Champion Schools manager with Special Olympics Utah, who helped coordinate the event.

Bingham High’s coach Braxton Thornley said it was a great experience and competition.

“I saw teams here that I haven’t seen before, so it was good to have more athletes and their partners,” he said. “It’s fun for my athletes to talk and compete with other athletes on other teams.”

Thornley had three athletes in the 100-yard and 200-yard dashes and long jump. Then, the athletes partnered with peers in the 4x100 relay, in which the Miners won their heat. They had their studentbody officers supporting them from the sidelines, waving a huge

Bingham flag.

Coach Alexis Brown, of Riverton High, had 16 athletes and 12 partners “work their hearts out” at practices held every other day. They competed in three of Riverton’s track team's home meets before the state meet.

Decked in their athletic warmup shirts provided by U First Credit Union, her athletes warmed up for their events in the 100, 200, 400, and 4x100 relay on the track, and long jump and shot put in the field events.

“It’s a fun opportunity for our students every year, and this year, everyone has had a buddy, so they were able to make sure they got to the right spot at the right time and could cheer each other on or run alongside them,” she said. “This is a great way to be inclusive and unify our school.” l

Herriman soccer wins state championship in major season-turnaround

I

n the world of high school athletics, things usually go the way they’re supposed to go.

It’s pretty common to see the top four seeds in the state tournament be the last remaining teams. Cinderella stories don’t come along too often. Which is what made Herriman High’s boys soccer team’s state championship run this year all the more special.

The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 5-8 record, and a 3-7 record in Region 3. At one point in the season, they lost seven games in a row.

Despite their record, head coach Mar-

cello Gasperini still believed in their championship potential.

“They’re all super competitive players. From the day we had tryouts, we said ‘We are a championship team. We train like champions. We play like champions. We battle like champions.’ The hardest part during the season was figuring out how we could have a losing record and still be champions,” he said.

Based on the state’s RPI system, they were ranked as an 18-seed going into the state playoffs. The team was coming off two

consecutive wins (which had snapped that seven-game losing streak) so they had a little bit of momentum. Add to that a “nothing to lose” underdog mentality and the team proved dangerous in the early rounds of the playoffs.

“Once playoffs came, our mentality was there. We were just hungry for some wins,” said junior forward Trevor Walk.

First the team knocked off Westlake, a 15-seed. Then the Cinderella run really got going in earnest in the second round, when the team beat the second seed, Corner Canyon. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, that game ended up going into a penalty kick shootout.

That became a theme for the Mustangs in the playoffs, as both of their next two games, against West and Farmington, also went into extra time.

So in the state championship game against Davis High, it felt like fate when the game’s final seconds started to tick down with the scoreboard still reading 0-0.

The announcer at Rio Tinto Stadium began counting down the seconds, “Ten… nine… eight…”

“I think a lot of us were ready for overtime and starting to mentally prepare for it during that last minute,” Walk said.

But almost as if the game were a microcosm of their entire season, the Mustangs finished strong.

The ball bounced out of a mix of Herriman and Davis players to Walk, who found himself unmarked, and near enough to the goal to turn around and launch a last-ditch attempt at a game-winning shot, which sailed into the back of the net with two seconds left.

So what led to the team’s incredible turnaround?

“I think the team morale changed. We started bonding a lot more. We started having a lot more fun, not worrying about our record,” Walk said.

Gasperini credited his players.

“The hardest part is getting them to continue to believe it. As the coach I know the players and see the talent. But losing seven in a row is brutal. It’s insanely hard as a player. But at the right times, the right players stepped up and carried the team.”

The state championship is the program’s first (after multiple trips to the finals in recent years) but Gasperini predicted they will be back soon.

“We have an incredible talent pool in Herriman. This is just the first one we got, but there’s more to come,” he said. l

Students dive into summer reading with Ocean of Possibilities-themed challenge

S

chools are out for summer, but at Salt Lake County Library branches, reading challenges are just getting started. Through July 31, students can participate in the Ocean of Possibilities summer reading event. For the past 30 years, the county library system has used the summer reading challenge to encourage and bolster young readership by incentivizing students to pick up books with the promise of prizes, rewards and celebrations at the finish line.

“Every year we host a kick-off party that ties into our theme and introduces the theme to participants. This year’s theme is Ocean of Possibilities, which has been particularly fun to conceptualize,” said Jeff Buydos, the PR coordinator of the Salt Lake County Library and one of the masterminds behind championing the summer reading event.

To further celebrate the Ocean of Possibilities theme, county branches have been decorated to reflect the mystique of the ocean. “If you come into one of our branches during the summer, you’ll see we’ve decorated accordingly, we were even able to get b-roll footage from The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium,” Buydos said.

Students and parents who visit the branches, in person, will learn more about the world’s oceans through fun facts, visuals and important

messaging that speaks to the need for people to collectively work toward preserving the oceans.

“At its core, it’s really a way for us to integrate systems of learning with hands-on, fun activities for children,” Buydos said. “Kids will walk away having learned important lessons pertaining to the ocean, while simultaneously incorporating play and imagination into those lessons. Play is so vitally important for children, in the same way, that literacy is.

We’re really looking at matters through a holistic lens.”

The summer reading event runs until July 31 and can be accessed and tracked in one of two ways. Students can either visit their local library and receive a physical tracking sheet, or they can use the library’s chosen tracking application, Beanstack. Beanstack is a mobile application that allows students to track their progress digitally, receiving real-time encouragement as they work toward meeting their reading goals. Students can enter the challenge at any point throughout its run time.

“One of the challenges of the library in recent years has been ingratiating technology into the format. Obviously, we want to keep a focus and emphasis on good old-fashioned books. However, the landscape of how we consume content has changed significantly,” Buy-

dos said. “And so we’ve really worked hard to figure out how we can strike a balance that emphasizes reading as a classic tool for enrichment while still making way for modern technology like audiobooks, videos, music, virtual reality, things of that nature.”

The Beanstack application is yet another way for libraries to streamline reading practices and promote literacy using modern technology. The app was developed amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, providing another outlet for students to access the challenge without having to compromise social distancing safety nets. Now that the pandemic has begun to largely stabilize, in-person participation is yet again on the rise.

However, Buydos was still thoroughly impressed as he witnessed the turnout of students who continued to participate in the challenge, at the height of Covid social distancing.

“We took a much-anticipated dip in our participation during those peak times of Covid, but even then, it was still an impressive turnout all things considered. This year, we can’t say anything definitively until the challenge is over, but we already know those numbers are trending upwards. The kick-off parties were certainly a sobering reminder of how invaluable social connection is.”

Especially during the summer, when it’s easy for boredom to take over and leave children in need of stimulation that is both fun and informative. “Our mission is to make a positive difference in our community, and Summer Reading is a great asset for fulfilling that mission,” said Salt Lake County Library Director Jim Cooper. “The benefits from this program at both the micro and macro levels have received empirical support. We know summer reading programs leave positive footprints wherever they’re implemented.”

Literacy serves as a gateway to so many important things, said Buydos. “Children who read can then take what they read and learn how to relate to others, how to empathize, and how to critically think. There’s also the bonus

of rendering imagination and world creation.

The possibilities are just endless.”

In addition to the physical act of reading, the Ocean of Possibilities challenge also encompasses and rewards students who participate in different learning adjacent tasks.

“When you consider the many ways people can take part in summer reading, it really is an ocean of possibilities,” said Salt Lake County Library Program Manager Nyssa Fleig. “Beyond reading, participants can do things like paint, sew, visit local museums and parks, play sports or board games, start new clubs, and volunteer to complete their reading records. It’s an inclusive program with nearly infinite ways to participate.”l

UHSAA places boys soccer on probation

I

n a stand against poor sportsmanship, the Utah High School Activities Association has placed boys soccer on probation.

Coaches have questioned if their decision was accurate and if it will change.

“The Executive Committee voted to place the sport of boys soccer on probation due to the rise in ejections related to unsportsmanlike conduct,” the UHSAA said in a statement. “UHSAA programs will now have 14 allowable contests, down from 16.”

The sport will be on probation for the next three years. The committee will conduct annual reviews to assess the sport’s progress.

“I am really torn on this issue,” Hunter High School boys head coach Brett Solberg said. “UHSAA claims that in the past year 50% of all ejections were in boys soccer. I feel that is not a fair comparison. In soccer, you can get a red card for a handball or a foul as the last defender. If you foul out in basketball it is not considered an ejection.”

In soccer, a red card forces the player or coach to be removed from the contest and the team’s following match. Red cards can be assessed for several reasons: two yellow cards are an automatic red card, a handball, a foul as the last defender before the goalkeeper, leaving the field of play without authorization, and poor sportsmanship.

“Not a single coach or administrator I have talked to knew anything about this being considered,” Copper Hills head coach Sean Terry said. “Unfortunately, when you are dealing with high school boys in a competitive sports setting, you will have isolated instances of poor sportsmanship.”

According to Terry referees have been instructed to take a no-tolerance approach to bad language on the field.

“I do not disagree with that approach, but if a player takes a hard foul from his opponent, then says something to the kid that fouled him, now he is red carded and out of the game. In football, that stuff happens, but the team will get a penalty and not an ejection,” Terry said.

Coaches agree that sportsmanship needs to be addressed and some changes need to be made. They do not think removing two games from the schedule will affect a change. More players may skip high school soccer and continue playing for a club team, high school teams just lose two contests.

“With the suspension of two games, we were hoping to travel to St. George in the preseason and play, but now we may not be able to,” Solberg said.

Most high schools have player and fan contracts that they sign before the season.

Boys high school soccer teams will play two less games for the next three years due to being on probation.

“I work very hard with my players. We want them to be honest players,” Terry said.

“We will not tolerate a dirty player. We are all human, I would never say we are 100% in this area. We strive to improve every year.”

“For a majority of our matches things were fine,” Solberg said. “We had a close match against Kearns. The game got heated and it led to pushing and shoving, which was not OK. Before our next match with them, we got all of the players together at center circle. We discussed the game and that bad behavior would not be tolerated, and it was not a problem.” l

Mountain Ridge girls lacrosse wins state championship

T

he Mountain Ridge girls lacrosse team was on a mission this season. After a disappointing loss as a 2-seed in the second round of last year’s playoffs, the Sentinels came into this year like they had something to prove.

Once again, Mountain Ridge was a dominant force during the regular season.

In 12 of the team’s 18 wins during the season, the Sentinels had a margin of victory of at least 10 goals. And many of them were more lopsided than that. In one threegame stretch in the middle of the season, they outscored their opponents by a combined score of 69-3.

The only blemishes on the Sentinels’ season was a 12-9 loss to Skyridge and a loss to 5A powerhouse Park City.

The Skyridge loss was early in the season, when many of the team’s younger players were still learning the team’s unique system. For the rest of the season, head coach Angie Brescia hoped for a chance at a rematch.

“We play a different kind of defense than most teams do, so early in the season when we had a lot of freshmen playing on defense, they were still learning it. So we weren’t prepared early in the season to face them. You can ask anyone I’ve spoken to, but I’ve been wanting a rematch with them because I knew we could do better,” she said.

That potential rematch seemed almost inevitable as both teams headed into the playoffs. Skyridge secured the No. 1 seed, with their only loss of the season coming against Park City. Mountain Ridge once again was the number two seed, just like last year.

After a very similar regular season, and even ending up with the same seeding as last year, the Sentinels may have felt like they were having deja vu. But Brescia said a big focus for the team this year was their mentality: not getting in their heads and taking things one game at a time. And that’s what they did, as they steamrolled their way to the championship game, winning three playoff games by a combined score of 51-15.

Skyridge held up its end of the deal in securing a rematch in the state championship game in equally impressive fashion, winning their playoff games by a combined score of 54-16.

And so the stage was set for two juggernauts to face off at Zions Bank Stadium (just down the road from Mountain Ridge High School). The home-field advantage was apparent for the Sentinels, who were backed by a sizable crowd of supporters.

of a few goals and looked like maybe they could blow the game open, the Falcons answered back with a few of their own. But Mountain Ridge never gave up the lead and eventually walked away with an 11-9 victory.

“I’m happy to have faced them in the championship. They did an exceptional job, making sure we fought all the way until the end to get this win, which just makes it feel all that much bigger,” Brescia said.

As the Falcons tried to make a comeback in the final minutes of the game, Sentinel goalkeeper Bekah Bargeron had to make a number of saves. Asked who was the game’s MVP, Brescia pointed to Bargeron.

“It’s really hard because I feel like they all stepped up in their own way, but honestly I’d give it to Bekah, because I feel like Skyridge had a huge percentage of the possession and got a lot of shots off on her, but she was stopping them for us,” Brescia said.

“That means everything,” Bargeron said. “Last year was really hard. I had a really tough time with my former team, and I had to switch schools. This team was so welcoming and so nice. I’ve worked so hard, and a lot of it has been for them. It’s amazing that I could do that for them.”

“It just makes you proud,” Brescia said about the team’s state championship victory. “You can only do so much and teach so much. They have to be the ones to want it and to bring it out on the field.

FDA approval provides COVID vaccines for children between 6 months and 5 years old

W

ith COVID now the fourth leading cause of death for children under the age of 1 and the fifth leading cause of death for children ages 5 and under, medical professionals believe the approval of a new COVID vaccine for children is a glimmer of hope.

Dr. Andrew Pavia, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Utah and director of epidemiology at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital, discussed the new vaccine approved by the FDA in June.

“This is really a big step,” Pavia said. “We’ve had several months now in which there’s been a lot of disease out there and younger children have not had any vaccine availability to provide them protection. It’s caused a lot of heartache for parents.”

The FDA reviewed scientific evidence submitted for vaccines by Moderna, for children ages 6 months to 5 years, and Pfizer-BioNTech, for children ages 6 months to 4 years. The advisory panel of outside experts unanimously voted for approval of both vaccines for this age group 21-0.

Pavia understands many parents have vaccine hesitancy in regard to COVID. He suggests parents talk with a trusted healthcare provider to get reliable information about the vaccine and how it can help keep their children safe.

“I think you should do it,” he said. “I would vaccinate my grandkids if I had any, but I think it’s really a decision every parent needs to make.”

This age group is the last to be approved for a COVID vaccine, which can now be found at pediatrician offices, pharmacies, the Salt Lake County Health Department and other health

departments.

“It’s a myth that children don’t get sick with COVID because they do and it’s been pretty tragic,” he said.

At the beginning of the pandemic, COVID targeted older people but with the Delta and Omicron variants, the number of children infected is rising. More than 570,000 children under the age of 1 and nearly 2 million between the ages of 1 and 4 have been diagnosed with COVID since March 2020, with the numbers rising significantly since the beginning of the year.

Numbers are expected to spike this fall and winter as kids return to school and daycare, and as new variants appear on the scene.

“With Omicron, it really hit kids hard,” Pavia said.

“During Omicron, 15% of all visits of children to the emergency department were due to COVID. This represented several million emergency department visits…Once Omicron hit, it was actually kids 6 months to 4 years old who had the highest hospitalization rates.”

The vaccine is formulated for small children, with Pfizer suggesting three doses to provide optimal protection, and Moderna recommending two, although the company said three would be better. Infants under 6 months don’t need a vaccine if their mothers were vaccinated during pregnancy. In that case, the antibodies pass to the baby, offering immunity for the first six months of life.

As with other COVID vaccines, side effects include soreness and redness at the injection site, possible swelling in the lymph nodes, fever and irritability. He said getting kids vac-

“Talk it over with someone who really knows and that means your provider,” Pavia said. “Not a friend on Facebook, not a Reddit thread, and think it through because it’s important that you make that decision for yourself. However, if you compare it to other things we vaccinate our kids for, the vaccine is at least as safe, based on everything we know to date.” l

The safety video urge drivers to slow down when there are dangerous road conditions caused by weather or construction, be aware of cyclists and give them ample space, and to be safe behind the wheel as speeding is a key factor

in auto accidents. Distracted driving and driving under the influence are other factors that contribute to auto fatalities.

“I have joined the other mayors and police chiefs in the Salt Lake Valley to send a strong message to our residents to slow down,” Zoltanski said. “This is not just a Sandy issue; excessive speed is creating unsafe conditions in all of our communities. The goal of the ‘Slow Down in Your Town’ video is to amplify the message across the county. We can all solve the issue of unsafe roads by just slowing down.”

Fireworks pose major risks this summer

I

remember the year vividly. We were doing our annual 4th of July fireworks in our circle with neighbors gathered. My neighbor… we will call him “Frank” to protect his identity, brought forward his homemade mortar – complete with his self-built mortar launcher. Frank lit the fuse and we watched as the mortar launcher tipped over, sending the mortar shooting into the road and making the loudest explosion that has ever graced our little neighborhood fireworks party. It was so scary! What if a car had driven past right then? What if it tipped the other way and shot towards one of our homes, or worse yet towards all of us where we were all sitting with our kids?

Accidents with fireworks happen all the time. They can be made worse when you invite Frank to the party and he brings his homemade pyrotechnic creation, but still… they happen. Combine that with the dry brush from this year’s drought, and we have intense risk.

My brother-in-law used to work for VECC, the valley’s 911 dispatch center.

He always dreaded the July holidays because the high volume of calls regarding fireworks made it so difficult for people to get through who were having life-threatening issues.

The ongoing drought (ranging from severe to exceptional), more people living on the borders of wildland, and increased recreation in the canyons within Salt Lake County, elevates our fire risk. Prevention and mitigation are much preferred to having to respond to and recover from a fire.

The drought has left our reservoirs and lakes at record lows, contributing to dry conditions, and leaving firefighters with less water to combat fires.

It is vitally important that we be fire smart this summer. Small things can make a big difference. It is estimated that exercising sensible fire practices can prevent roughly 70 percent of Utah wildfires.

These are things like discarding cigarettes in the proper receptacles, not driving over or parking your car on dry vegetation, and securing trailer chains to make sure they don’t drag and spark a fire. Use a mindful approach, such as only starting campfires in cement or metal firepits, never leaving them unattended, and fully drowning them until cool to the touch. Utahfireinfo.gov has even more information to consider for your summer plans.

Many residents celebrate the 4th and 24th of July with fireworks. Fireworks are a lot of fun, but I’d encourage you to attend professional fireworks shows instead of lighting your own. The professional shows have measures in place to ensure safety. I’m a big fan of liberty and freedom, but I’m also a big fan of personal responsibility, so join me in foregoing fireworks this year. Let’s be smart and be part of the solution!

Government 101: City communications

H

ow do you know what is going on in your city? How often do you hear from your elected leaders? Where do you go when you have a question?

Most cities have employees that do similar jobs in other cities. There will always be someone to do finances, to keep track of city code, and someone who is the city recorder.

All cities will have a council and a mayor.

Communication departments, however, come in all shapes and sizes. Philosophies on how best to communicate also vary.

“When we go to lunch as communications, we all have such different setups,” Eric Richards, communications director for Sandy City said. “I can’t keep track of them.”

Richards also said that in Provo there is a PIO (Public Information Officer) to handle communication in every department.

West Jordan has a team of three communication employees, though before 2021 there was only one. Sandy has four, though their population is approximately 30,000 fewer residents than West Jordan. Holladay has zero. Instead there are two employees who have double responsibility. Midvale has one communication employee, though Holladay and Midvale serve nearly the same size population.

department like any other business. “We run like an internal ad agency,” Richards said.

“We are the go-to for brand guardianship. We police brand. We are responsible if they need some new corporate identity, brainstorm campaigns, a video, or build a campaign [such as] Police Safe and Secure,” Richards said.

Sandy’s four employees, a director, a software engineer, a content media editor and a coordinator, serve all city departments.

Some departments choose to have their own communications and will reach out to the public in different ways. Sandy’s Mayor office has its own PIO; City Council and a few departments have their own marketing teams.

With their four employees, and the occasional outside contract for video, the city posts almost daily to social media, designs and produces postcards on big topics, and controls a chatbot that quickly answers a resident's question.

“One of the best resources we have is Citizen Connect which won the Best of State award,” Richards said.

West Jordan’s philosophy is to build a bigger team and reach more residents. One strategy is to add a community outreach employee.

“My hope is that they are [Spanish speaking] because 25% of the city is either Hispanic or Latino,” Tauni Barker, communications director in West Jordan said. “They may speak English perfectly but I think there’s things we’re missing. And for certain we’re not talking to them.”

When it comes to interacting with residents, West Jordan would like to hear more from them and communication would be an equal responsibility.

“Ideally, the partnership would be 50/50,” Barker said. “Residents aren’t as engaged as we would like them to be. We have to go to them. The relationship is more 80/20.”

West Jordan recently launched a new website, sends emails about special events and initiatives, posts on Facebook, and has a text messaging service.

In addition to another employee, West Jordan wants to send out regular emails about what is going on in city council meetings.

“Ideally, the government should do as much education as possible,” Barker said. “I wish I could say we could do a government 101. We don’t have the staff bandwidth to do that. You end up tackling the things that are right in front of you.”

Holladay does not have a dedicated communications department. Stephanie Carlson, the city recorder, manages the website, posts on social media, and sends out emails. Holly Smith, the assistant city manager, approves any message that is going to the residents and makes sure the message is consistent.

If the city wants to do any major projects, such as redesign the website or launch an education campaign to the community, they will hire outside communication experts.

Mailing information to houses is difficult. Unlike most other cities, Holladay does not manage their own water supply. That service is contracted out. Because of this, the city does not have access to who lives where.

“If you want information you have to come to us,” Smith said.

Since the pandemic, and because of the rise of social media and digital communication, there is more work to do. “People are tuning in more,” Carlson said. “People were at home more and could see what was going on.”

The city recently launched an app for residents to find basic information.

“It’s not very robust but it gives basic information,” Smith said.

For the future, “We’re reaching as many people as we can, for transparency,” Smith said.

“We did a community survey five years ago. The Journal was the No. 1 source of communication. That’s where we reach the most people.

“We’ll do another survey this fall.”

All cities that spoke with the City Journals confirm that if a resident calls the city with a question or a statement, they are directed to the right department to get the answers they are looking for.

“Sometimes I’ll spend 30 minutes to an hour answering one question,” Barker from West Jordan said. l

Three Ways Rising Interest Rates May Impact Your Personal Finances

he Federal Reserve has been aggressively ramping up interest rates over the past several months to try to rein in inflation, which is at a 40-year high.

After three years of near-zero interest rates, the Fed raised rates a quarter percentage point in March, a half point in May, and three-quarters of a point in June — the largest rate hike since 1994. The Fed has also indicated that it will continue significantly raising rates, by as much as an additional two percent, over the next year.

Today’s borrowing costs are back to 2019 pre-pandemic levels, and they are expected to keep going up. Here’s what rising interest rates could mean for Utah consumers: Tackling credit card debt. If you carry a balance on your credit card, paying off that debt could become more difficult. That’s because most credit cards have variable interest rates, which typically rise and fall with market rates.

The average credit card interest rate hit a twoyear high in June, topping 16.75%. As rates continue to rise, carrying a credit card balance will likely get more expensive. Today’s consumer has extra incentive to pay down credit card debt and other high-interest debt, or consider other strategies to offset rising interest rates, such as a

credit card balance transfer.

Buying or selling a house.

While mortgage rates have shot up over the past few months, Utah’s hot housing market has shown little sign of cooling. That could change as rates climb further, pricing more Utahns out of the housing market.

With every 1% increase in the mortgage rate, a homebuyer pays about $300 more per month on a $500,000 mortgage.

However, the Beehive State’s housing shortage will likely keep demand strong and prices rising, albeit at a slower pace.

Building savings. Higher interest rates are welcome news for people who like to save.

Though there isn’t a direct link between the federal funds rate and deposit rates, financial institutions generally increase the annual percentage yield that is paid on money market accounts, savings accounts, and certificates of deposit after the central bank raises rates. As the federal funds rate increases, consumers should start seeing a better return on their deposits, including savings accounts, money markets and CDs. t was the height of COVID. We were trying to figure out Zoom meetings and DoorDash and online grocery shopping. I’d been laid off. The world was topsy-turvy.

Stress levels were off the charts.

My husband decided we weren’t fighting enough, so he thought he’d teach me to golf.

I was young and naive and thought it would give us a break from the COVID lockdowns and Netflix binging. But two years later, it’s become the most infuriating part of my life. A sport with an uppity dress code should have been the first clue.

We got to the golf arena and rented a cart, which is really the only reason to golf.

Tom gave me the scorecard like I understood “par” or colors or numbers. We drove to the starting line and he proceeded to give me my first golf lesson.

“What club are you going to use?” he asked.

“How should I know? Sandwich?

Soda? Strip?”

Tom swore, handed me a club and instructed, “Widen your stance, get closer to the ball, shoulders up, head down, knees together, thumbs out, straighten the arms but bend the elbows. Twist, but don’t move your hips. Watch the ball. Watch the ball!”

After getting me in peak form, I took a swing. I totally missed the ball and sprained

several unused muscles in my back.

“You’re pulling up,” he said, unhelpfully.

“Pulling up what?”

“Just pulling up.”

“I don’t understand the words you’re using,” I replied. I considered throwing a ball at his head.

“You know, just don’t pull up.”

I glanced around the course, certain a divorce lawyer had to be within range.

“Watch,” he said. “This is what you’re doing.”

Tom then proceeded to reenact my swing, which, according to him, looks like I’m trying to kill a spider with a baseball bat.

“Don’t do that,” he said. “Understand?”

“Do you understand alimony?” I mumbled.

It’s gone downhill from there, but at least now I’ve learned golf etiquette, like how driving the cart through those fun sand dunes is frowned upon. And I should whisper on the golf field unless I miss a shot, and then I’m supposed to yell a swear word and throw my golf bat in the lake.

I also learned I shouldn’t shout “Fore!” every time I take a swing, and kicking the ball onto the fairway is a cool golf-pro trick. And the drink cart is like an ice-cream truck for grown-ups.

After watching Tom’s conniption when he hit a ball into the creek, I asked him, “You do this to relax? Is it working?”

He gritted his teeth and drove to the next hole. I sat back and watched the beautiful scenery. I’ve seen deer, squirrels, ducks and bunnies romping near the “greens,” which is a lazy name if I’ve ever heard one.

Maybe during the next pandemic, Tom can teach me how to pole vault or we could join a curling team or maybe we could do a DIY extension to our house. There are just so many ways to start a fight.
