MIDDLE SCHOOL REFORMED BY INNOVATION

F

ort Herriman Middle School principal Eric Price is changing the way educators think about discipline, mental health and students’ needs.

Price had only been a principal for 18 months when he was named Principal of the Year by colleagues of the Utah Middle Level Association, who were impressed by his leadership in middle school reform and innovation of effective middle-level practices.

“Even when we’re on lunch break or when we’re carpooling together, he’s always talking about how to make school better for the students, always bouncing ideas off of anybody who will listen,” FHMS teacher PJ Smalley said. “You can tell that he’s not just in this as a job. He really does care about the students.”

Because of Price’s innovations, FHMS looks different from the middle schools of previous generations.

Changes to discipline

Suspension is an outdated practice that has been replaced with restorative justice practices—communication, mediation, student-led problem-solving.

“It’s not about punishing the behavior,” Price said. “It’s about helping a child change the behavior, and a lot of times, it’s figuring out the root of that.”

Price’s background prepared him for the kind of principal he has become. He worked with award-winning principal Dixie Garrison at West Jordan Middle for four years. He also gained experience working with struggling students at an alternative school in Texas.

Herriman, Riverton communities come together to help the ‘Mountain View Man’

M

otorists who frequent 13400 South between the Herriman and Riverton border have likely noticed a man traveling up and down the road on his wheelchair.

He’ll often travel long distances, from his home on the west side of Mountain View Corridor to the Harmons at Mountain View Village or even all the way to the Walmart on the other side of Bangerter Highway. He’s often seen traveling even through adverse weather conditions, such as blizzards and rainstorms.

Concern for the man’s welfare prompted a group of Herriman and Riverton residents to get organized on social media to see if they could help.

“I had seen him on the street a couple of times,” said Traci Paoli, one of the admins of the Facebook group, Mountain View Man Fundraiser. “I saw posts on the Facebook groups asking about him, saying that they had offered him a ride but that he’d turned them down.”

The group was started in December 2020

“Anyone looking to help the man crossing mountain view and 134th in Riverton/Herriman border. I am trying to gather more information on how we can help him,” she wrote in the group’s first post.

group’s first leaders were able to do, Paoli decided to step in and take the lead.

“I noticed everyone commenting on this thing, and I said, ‘Let’s do something about this,’” she said.

The first step was setting up a donation account for people to contribute to. Instead of going with an online service like Go Fund Me, which collects fees, Paoli went to Cyprus Credit Union, which agreed to waive all taxes and fees for the account. Staff even sent an employee to the home of the “Mountain View Man,” Corey Coons, to set up the account.

Once the account was set up, Paoli began soliciting donations through the Facebook group and in other community groups such as Herriman Happenings and Riverton Happenings.

In a matter of weeks, the group raised about $4,500 to go toward a new wheelchair for Coons.

Ron Whiting, a Herriman resident who works in the mobility industry with a focus on outfitting patients with wheelchairs to meet their unique needs, volunteered to meet with Coons in his home and figure out how to best use the money raised by the community. Given the rough terrain and poor weather he sometimes travels through, they decided to go with a lightweight frame wheelchair with special

wheels designed for traveling through rain or snow. The wheelchair is now being built and will be delivered to Coons sometime in April.

Besides the main fundraiser for the wheelchair, the community also stepped up to help in other ways. Some residents donated new coats, gloves and shoes for Coons. And Harmons donated a gift basket of some of Coons’ favorite products.

Paoli has also been in touch with local and state agencies to see if it would be possible to implement safer conditions for Coons and other pedestrians attempting to cross

Mountain View Corridor, such as fluorescent colored flags for people to hold as they cross the busy road.

Paoli said it was encouraging to see how quickly the community came together to help someone in need.

“It was really cool because we’re known for being kind in Utah,” she said.” I’ve always felt that way. You feel a sense of friendliness.”

The City Journals was unable to reach Coons, a naturally shy person, for comment.

But Paoli said that he and his family are “very grateful and very thankful.” l

How Bangerter construction is impacting local businesses

A

Utah Department of Transportation project to build an overpass for Bangerter Highway over 12600 South has impacted many commuters in the southwest part of the valley. But it has also had a substantial impact on businesses located near the project.

To accommodate the construction, it is no longer possible to cross Bangerter Highway going east–west. Those traveling north–south along Bangerter are also limited to exiting onto 12600 South in one direction. This has made it more inconvenient for people to access the many businesses in the area.

The City Journals asked Herriman residents in a Facebook poll if they had visited businesses in the area more or less since construction began. Out of 216 respondents, 81% said they have avoided the area more than usual, compared to 16% who said they haven’t changed how often they solicit businesses in the area.

An informal door-to-door survey of local businesses found that the impact has been unevenly distributed.

Restaurants with robust delivery options, like Tenney’s Pizza and Jimmy John’s, have fared a little better.

“It has gone down considerably the last few weeks, but honestly it hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be,” said Jimmy John’s

franchise owner Tristen Coates.

Alex Rees, a manager for Tenney’s Pizza, estimated that it has lost 10% to 15% its their business since construction started.

On the west side of Bangerter, The Coffee Shop manager Benjamin Lyon said it has lost about half of its business.

“We’ve had to adjust our staffing,” he said.

“That’s been hard on all our baristas.”

Lyon also said that the impacts of the construction and road closure has been “much worse” than the impact of all the safety protocols imposed over the last year due to COVID-19.

Many business owners said they felt out of the loop when it came to knowing when the road closure would be taking place.

“Several months ago, someone came in and said they were going to close the road but didn’t go into much detail,” said Chris Neel, a manager for Five Guys. “They didn’t know exactly when it was happening. Then someone came in the day before it closed to tell us it was happening.”

Alyssa Ward, owner of the Roxberry Smoothies location, said she received most of the information about the project’s progression from construction workers who came in for a smoothie.

While most business owners the City Journals talked to recalled a Riverton City employee communicating with them about the project, Riverton City Communications Director Casey

Saxton said that UDOT would have been the party responsible for conveying information to local businesses.

“Because this is a UDOT project, they are responsible for communicating with all of the stakeholders in the area,” he said. “I believe they did make efforts to communicate with as many of the businesses as possible.”

Still, Riverton City officials have done what they could to help out the impacted

businesses.

“We have encouraged people to support impacted businesses in several ways,” Saxton said. “We created a custom graphic showing where specific businesses are located and have posted that on social media, on our website and sent out the information in an email to our residents. It was also available via a link sent out to residents in a text message. Collectively, our efforts have resulted in over 41,000 digital views.” l

Reeling in some fun at Herriman’s Cove pond

A

trip to the neighborhood fishing hole with pole and tackle box in hand has become a popular get-out-of-the-house destination and welcomed distraction. Luckily, for Herriman residents, young anglers can join the community fishing program aimed to help youth learn how to fish over the course of six classes.

“The program was designed by the Division of Wildlife to promote the outdoors,” said Karen Nukaya, events and recreation supervisor for Herriman City. “It’s bringing families and others together to enjoy the sport of fishing.”

Located at 7200 West 14200 South, the 1.2-acre pond has a fish-cleaning station and is handicapped accessible. There are nearby restrooms, gazebos, picnic areas, grills, trail system and playground.

“The Cove had originally been planned to include a fishing component in an effort to introduce kids living in our urbanized setting to their outdoor resources,” said Assistant City Manager Tami Moody. “It teaches kids about fish and fishing, as well as patience and good communication.”

The Cove is considered a “put and take” pond, meaning the fish are meant to be taken home. It is stocked with Bluegill, channel catfish and rainbow trout, coming directly from the DOW hatchery. Lucky kids can

catch and bring home two fish.

“This is done so that they can’t reproduce and inter-breed with wild fish and modify the gene pool,” Nukaya said. “The DOW can control the fish populations.”

Kids ages 5 to 18 are invited to sign up and learn the basics of fishing. Adults of all ages can also be taught the fundamentals.

“It has been very rewarding to watch them participate with confidence as they go out with their grandkids and children,” Nukaya said.

Volunteers drive this program and are essential. Nukaya said city personnel could not do the program without them. Anyone over 18 years who loves to fish and would like to teach children (and at times adults) are invited to donate their time and skills to eager anglers. Volunteers are able to bring their children to participate in the program.

Teaching how to clean the fish is another popular activity.

“Kids all come running when it’s time to clean a fish,” Nukaya said. “They are intrigued to see and learn about the anatomy of a fish.”

caught a fish that we would cook it,” Nukaya said. “He caught one, and the instructor cleaned and fried it up. The boy ended up not liking it at all. Mountain Ridge makes up for lost time after spring season cancellations

I

t’s not often an inaugural season rolls around, but when it does, it can be a special occasion.

Mountain Ridge High School, which opened in 2019, was on the verge of pulling off a successful inaugural sports season but the COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of the school’s spring season.

One year later, the student-athletes and the community are ready for their first spring season, albeit in their second year of existence.

Athletic Director Sam Rogers said so far this spring season, he’s seen higher turnout, not only from Mountain Ridge students but also from the community, for sports that don’t usually draw big crowds.

“From a personal standpoint, it is incredible to have the spirit, the noise, just the overall feeling of having the students there brings to an athletic event,” Rogers said.

The return isn’t without it’s changes. The pandemic continues, and while vaccines are in distribution, many of the student-athletes are still following protocols.

Those protocols, however, are not so much a burden but rather as a protection.

“At least for myself and the rest of the team, we’re really trying to do our best to have a season and not get anything cancelled,” Easton Brooks, a senior baseball player, said.

“We’re trying to follow COVID protocols as

best we can. I know for most of our guys, we’re just hanging out and being around each other more off the field, so then we don’t increase the chance of [COVID-19] spreading.”

About a year ago, the realities of COVID-19 became more obvious and many started implementing safety measures. For the UHSAA, that meant suspending and ultimately cancelling the spring season.

This was tough for many of the spring student-athletes at Mountain Ridge, especially in the midst of its inaugural season.

Rogers said “shock and dismay” permeated throughout the spring programs. In particular, many of the coaches and administrators felt bad for last year’s seniors who didn’t get a senior season.

The baseball team was in St. George for a preseason tournament when it heard of the cancellation. Baseball coach Brock Whitney said his players took it hard.

“We prepared, and we played during the fall; we had open gym and practices during the winter; we got all excited and ready to go, and we didn’t go,” he said.

“That was the hardest thing: being prepared and excited, and having it taken away.”

Disruptions were common throughout the next school year, but as spring got closer, many realized this wouldn’t be like 2020.

Rogers said he’s noticed a lot of gratitude from the spring student-athletes because it looks to be minimal disruptions for the 2021 spring season. Furthermore, he said many are taking the COVID protocols seriously, and Mountain Ridge has recently seen minimal cases of COVID-19.

Drawing on his past experience as a coach, Rogers said he knows how high school athletes’ minds work, and he sees a higher work ethic coming out of Mountain Ridge student-athletes.

“You can see that these kids not only have talent but that talent is increasing because they are working so hard in order to ensure they actually get their season,” he said.

“They have a lot of pride in what they do, and that is also helping to improve their play each and every game.”

While there’s been a lot the Mountain Ridge community has missed out on because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rogers said he’s seeing a high level of excitement for this spring season.

He said there were many community members excited to support the school, even if they didn’t have a kid attending. Rogers said that was the biggest letdown from the school missing its inaugural spring season.

Still, he said it hasn’t deterred the community support.

As for the players, Brooks said there are high goals and a lot of excitement among him and his baseball teammates as they return to the diamond.

“We felt like we had something to prove, especially since last year we weren’t able to really show who we are and what we could really do,” he said. l

Shakespeare goes cyberpunk to embrace performing in a pandemic

P

reparing a theatrical production during a pandemic has been a challenge for high school theater teachers.

But instead of fighting it, Providence Hall High School’s theater teacher Scott Liddiard embraced the circumstances. He opted to make a cyberpunk film of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” instead of a live performance and chose to make mask-wearing and contagious diseases part of the storyline.

By amplifying a minor subplot in Shakespeare’s script, which blames disruptions in nature and social contention on the spread of “rheumatic diseases,” Liddiard felt justified in including masks in the costumes.

“I thought, ‘How do we do this safely but also how can we have fun with it and make it part of the storytelling?’ and those two things came together for me with cyberpunk,” Liddiard said.

Actors playing royals will wear velvet or lace masks while lower-class characters have rags tied on their faces. The fairy magic in the play has been reimagined into technology-based antics so that actors in those roles wear painter respirators and gas masks.

Creating a film instead of a live performance has provided Liddiard’s film and theater students with unique learning experiences. Students are responsible for the decisions and execution of filming, sound, lighting, costuming and set design.

With 25 years of experience in the theatrical world, Liddiard could retain more control of the show, but he chooses to act more as a facilitator.

“I usually present them with a problem, tell them what I’m looking for and allow them to design or execute it, allowing their creativity or their passion to drive them to a solution,” Liddiard said. “It’s some of the most exciting learning possible. They’ll think of solutions that I hadn’t considered or ways to go about working within a budget to make things happen.”

Triniti Welch, a senior and head costume designer, said the experience has pushed her creativity and skill development.

“That is why we have all come so far from where we started,” Triniti said. “He really forces us—in the best way possible—to learn for ourselves.”

Students said every year, Liddiard tries to one-up himself with increasingly complicated set pieces and complex productions that challenge himself and his students. This year’s movie has been a big challenge.

“Film is a completely different discipline and thought than what we have done previously,” Liddiard said. “The students have been understandably kind of intimidated by that change but also really excited about it and risen to the occasion.”

Actors have learned to adapt to acting to a camera, keeping consistency through

multiple shots, and shooting scenes out of sequence.

Junior Jaxon Burdette said, while he would normally improvise a fight happening in the background of a scene in a play, it must be precisely choreographed for a film.

“With filming, you have to do the same thing every single time because of all the different shots that are being taken,” Jaxon said.

This is the job of second assistant director Nicole Thurston, who keeps track of every shot and every movement within each shot to ensure consistency.

“It’s kind of a tedious job, but it’s exciting; it makes it a lot easier for us to go through filming,” said the junior.

Even with the help of student and parent volunteers, it has taken nearly the whole school year to create the film. In the fall, there were delays due to quarantines, school policies and soft closures. By February, the 27 actors and 26 stage crew members were being tested for COVID-19 every two weeks, which meant fewer disruptions to their filming schedule, which was lagging behind.

“We underestimated how much time it would take every day to film,” assistant director Aurora Kruckeberg, a junior, said.

“So, that is why it’s uncertain about when the film’s going to come out, because we’re uncertain about when we’re going to end the filming.”

Liddiard hopes to complete filming before April so production students can begin editing and adding special effect elements for the fairies’ technology and the transformation of a character’s head into a donkey. They will also edit any audio problems—dialogue muffled by masks or noise from basketball games which were being played on the other side of the gym with only a plastic partition to separate it from their sound stage during filming.

Plans to distribute the film are not finalized but may include a red carpet premiere and Q&A, a premium opening night stream, a regular stream and a DVD. Check the PHHS theater Facebook, www.facebook.com/phhstheater, for updated details about the film’s release date and viewing options.

Students are excited to share their film with a larger-than-normal audience. Their audience will include Nicole’s family, which lives in the Philippines, Triniti’s boyfriend in New Zealand, Jaxon’s extended family on the East coast, Aurora’s family members who are spread out across the U.S., and even their future families.

“It’s a movie so obviously it’s going to last a lot longer than a play would, and you’re going to be able to show it to your children, which I think is something that’s super-duper cool,” Triniti said. “It’s something that we’re going to have for the rest of our lives and an experience that we’re never going to forget.” l

Community gardening opportunities produce homegrown fun for Herriman residents

un’s out, fun’s out! Spring has finally dipped its toes into warmer weather, and the growing season is officially here.

Nothing says springtime like planting a garden (plus the birth of cute baby farm animals, of course).

Herriman residents are invited to try out their green thumbs and join the community garden scene.

“The community garden is part of our coordinated efforts for promoting health and wellness in our community, integrating and working with our Healthy Herriman program,” said Assistant City Manager Tami Moody. “It was the joint efforts of the mayor and city manager at that time that brought the garden to fruition.”

Created in 2010, the garden was designed with efforts to provide a space for the community to develop and sustain a garden. As the housing developments took off, city officials and residents wanted to set aside space where locals could garden, even if they did not have space at their residence.

Located at 12733 South Pioneer St., the garden features 48 garden plots, divided into single and double sections. Members are allowed to use one garden plot per household. A deposit is required at the beginning of the season ($40 for a single plot and $60 for double plots) and will be refunded at the end of the season if the gardener remains in good standing throughout the season. Secondary water and a communal shed supplied with garden-wide tools are provided to participants.

“Plots are in high demand, and the garden is usually full,” said Heidi Shegrud, Herriman City land-

scape architect. “Members must keep their plots well maintained, clear of weeds and debris.”

This site also has a significant place in Herriman’s history. Originally an agricultural community, farming was simply what people did, not only to grow their own food but as a means of income.

“Previously, the location of Fort Herriman in the days of the early settlers, the garden was also created to build a network of people engaged in local gardening, which would not only provide a self-sustained food source but would also facilitate opportunity to share food within the community, to food pantries and to residents in need,” Moody said.

The donation process centers around a designated plot where gardeners are encouraged to plant their extra crops. It is then cultivated and harvested by the committee and volunteers, and the food is donated to local families in need, as well as the Utah Food Bank.

In 2013, Herriman adopted an ordinance creating a Community Garden Committee, made up of volunteers that encourage public awareness of community gardening and provide oversight of the garden plots.

The committee keeps records of members and ensures maintenance, weeding and complete harvesting. They also aid in public awareness centered around the garden and offer gardening tips.

High school students excited, grateful to finally get a prom

fter a year of no school dances, high school students have finally been given permission to hold a prom.

“We’ve had numerous students reach out to us, begging for some semblance of normalcy,” Jordan Board of Education President Bryce Dunford said. “They just don’t want school to end and have been denied everything that many of us remember when we think of our school years. Dances are an important part of school. They create a lasting memory of what school was and how you felt about it.”

Based on the success of the test-to-stay protocols that have been used to keep schools and sports activities open, the board voted to allow high schools to hold a prom and a senior dinner dance. To attend, students must test negative for COVID-19 within 48 hours of the dance and wear a mask.

The news was met by Herriman High School student body officers with jumping, screaming and cheering.

“We just couldn’t believe that it was actually happening,” Peyton Bisquera, junior class service officer said. “We just haven’t been able to do much as a school this year because of COVID restrictions. So we are excited that we were able to actually hold an event where we could all be together and create some normalcy for this year.”

HHS junior class President Peyton Adams said SBOs were eager to have an event to plan.

“It’s been hard because we haven’t had much to look forward to,” she said. “We went to having a dance almost every month of the school year to not having anything at all. I think it kind of discourages our spirits, because being able to have a dance brings the school together, and it gives everybody something to look forward to. It’s kind of hard just to come to school day to day just to come to school.”

Mountain Ridge High School junior class President Kierstin Hoonaker was one of many students who were skeptical about the news.

“I just didn’t believe it at first because I’d heard ‘no’ so many times,” she said.

Students have been trying to find a way to safely hold a school dance all year. MRHS Principal Michael Kochevar said dances are the school activity that students have missed the most this year.

“I think it’s important for these types of activities to take place because it allows students to get to know others outside of school, it creates the memories that students will remember and it allows them to blow off some steam and act a little crazy,” he said.

This will be Mountain Ridge High School’s first prom. Last year’s inaugural prom was cancelled when schools were closed two weeks before it was scheduled.

Tenney said not being able to have a dance this year has prevented students from feeling a social or emotional connection to each other or a sense of school pride that usually develops through dances and other big, unifying school events that haven’t happened this year. She is excited to be one of the five junior class officers planning junior prom, which will be her first high school dance.

“I’m most excited to just see everyone have a good time and to see all of our ideas come together,” she said. “We’ve been waiting so long to be able to do something that you would see in a normal year. Everyone is just so excited and grateful to have this opportunity.”

The lack of dances has been a financial burden for MRHS SBOs. Normally, proceeds from school dances fund activities for the following year. Being a new school for the 2019–20 year, they spent money on events with the expectation that they’d earn the money back. Kiersten said they were depending on the proceeds from last year’s prom to dig them out of their hole. However, because they only had a few dances last year before everything was cancelled, their budget has been stretched all year.

Herriman wrestler best in state

ust a couple of weeks prior to the 4A state wrestling championships, Juan Diego Catholic High School senior Isabella “Belle” Vargas sprained her ankle at a school dance and suffered another sprain on her other ankle during a practice. Yet, “there was no doubt that she was going to tape it up and get out there,” according to JDCHS wrestling head coach Andrew Sedillo, so she took advantage of the time prior to the state meet to rehabilitate to get back on the mat.

On Feb. 20 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, she solidified her No. 1 ranking in the 108-pound division by defeating Mountain Crest’s Gabriel Norton in the championship match.

“My team was so supportive in helping me feel confident and encouraged in realizing it was ‘my time,’” she said. “It feels pretty good and when my hand was raised, it really hit me that I was the champion. It felt amazing.”

Sedillo said it was rewarding to see Vargas win the title as he’s also had a front-row seat to her journey to get there.

“Her first two or three years, she was practicing against the boys and then competing against boys,” he said. “It was difficult, but that work that she did helped her tremendously in winning.”

Vargas also beat Mountain Crest’s Brinley Cowley, Crimson Cliffs’ Katelyn Wall and Ogden’s Kennedy Cadiz at the state tournament.

Samantha Harker, competing at 140 pounds, also represented Juan Diego girls wrestling at state, losing both matches to Logan’s Sydney Crowley and Mountain Crest’s Sophie Longson.

On the boys side, senior Brock Gutierrez defeated Desert Hills’ Tanner Esplin before losing to Uintah’s Christia Hartie in the 145-pound division at the 4A state tournament. Senior Sione Vea, competing in the 220-pound category, lost to Mountain Crest’s Andrew Belles and Cedar City’s Ben Ellis.

Senior Konnor Kegel (138 pounds) and junior Kolton Maser (152 pounds) were also part of the JDCHS wrestling team this season.

n your mark, get set, go! It’s time to dust off those sneakers and get outside with Herriman’s Perks in the Park (www.herriman.org/perks-park) program. This diverse, outdoor recreation series contributes to the community, providing a high quality of life for Herriman residents. With increasing urbanization, communities continuously seek new ways to provide outdoor spaces and activities to residents, and outdoor exercise is one ideal option.

“Perks in the Park is a program that we run throughout the year to promote the parks in Herriman and encourage healthy and active lifestyles,” said Dayton Martindale, events manager for Herriman City. “The spring program focuses on a Couch to 5K plan.”

Established in the winter of 2019 by the Healthy Herriman (www.herriman.org/ healthy-herriman) committee, this weekly workout program began as an opportunity for residents to participate in outdoor activities in a variety of Herriman Parks. This volunteer group is associated directly with Herriman City, the Salt Lake County Health Department, Intermountain Healthcare and the University of Utah Health Plan. planning and implementing creative and beneficial ideas.

Perks in the Park activities vary throughout the year, as do the ages for those participating in certain activities.

“Yoga is offered during the summer months, followed by high aerobic classes in the fall,” said Martindale. “Winter perks include free ice skating at the Ice Ribbon at J. Lynn Crane Park.”

Active classes in the parks require participants to be 12 years of age and older. Winter ice skating allows locals of all ages to join in the fun.

Wednesday workouts, beginning March 24 through June 16 at J. Lynn Crane Park. The Nut Garden officially opened their store in Bluffdale this month with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Southwest Valley Chamber and officiated

by Bluffdale mayor, Derk Timothy, and other local officials. Owner, Brett Davis, is enjoying getting to know the people in the neighborhood, “we’re grateful for the kind people we’ve met in this area so far and are looking forward to being here for many years.” The Nut Garden offers nuts, chocolate, dried fruit and other tasty snacks. Davis says they plan to add more gifts and other new treats in the near future, “Like many businesses, we’re doing what we can on tighter budget than we’d like, but we hope to keep building our store and business.” Hours for the Nut Garden are Monday through Saturday 10am to 6pm. They are located at 2700 West and Bangerter Hwy—southeast corner of the intersection.

I

t may not have ended the way they hoped for, but the Herriman girls basketball team had a season to remember in 2021.

Behind an aggressive defense and an offense full of 3-point shooters, the Mustangs put up points throughout the season. They went undefeated in Region play, with an average margin of victory of 32.4 points. Their high-mark of the season in terms of points came against West High on Feb. 2, when they put up an astounding 97 points. That ranks in the top 10 highest-scoring games in the history of girls basketball in Utah.

Their only close contest in region play came against defending state champions, Bingham, a five-point victory on Feb. 11. (In their other matchup, the Mustangs won by 20.)

The Mustangs headed into the state playoffs ranked No. 1 in the state. By all accounts, they seemed to be on a collision course with second-ranked, undefeated Fremont High.

Like Herriman, Fremont tore through competition this year. Their highest margin of victory was 84 points while their closest game was a 17-point victory.

Sure enough, both teams made it to the championship game. For the Mustangs, the championship was a chance for revenge, as

Fremont had ended their season in the playoffs the previous two years. Meanwhile, Fremont was hungry for a championship after falling to Bingham each of the last two years—once in the semis and last year in the finals.

The two sides played an evenly matched first half, with Herriman taking a one point lead into halftime. But things fell apart in the third quarter for the Mustangs, as they were outscored 17-3 in the period. They weren’t able to make up the difference in the fourth quarter and lost by a final score of 63-43. l

here was a lot of excitement in the Utah lacrosse community last spring. It was to be the first season of sanctioned high school lacrosse competition. Then of course, that inaugural season was derailed, along with all other spring sports, by COVID-19.

The Mountain Ridge High boys lacrosse team was able to get in a few games last year prior to their season’s cancellation. It won all three of its games in a Provo tournament.

Then, on the bus ride to one of their following games, the players and coaches received a call that school had been cancelled for the next two weeks.

For many seniors on the team who had looked forward to finally playing lacrosse as a sanctioned high school sport, it was a devastating blow.

“That was a group of boys I’d spent a lot of time with,” said head coach Trent Bangert.

“For them to only get a few games, it was heartbreaking.”

Now after regrouping in the summer and fall with scrimmages against other high school teams, the Sentinels lacrosse team is ready to unleash the pent-up energy and frustration stemming from last year’s cancelled season.

“We look really good,” Bangert said.

“We have a great group of players. We have a great senior class of fourteen players.”

Senior Keaton Jex leads the team with 11 goals through their first three games. Jack Crawford, another senior, has 10 goals and five assists. David Wright, a junior, is responsible for the most total goals on the team,

with nine goals and nine assists.

The impressive start to the season has the Sentinels ranked as the sixth-best team in the state, according to MaxPreps.

Between the inauguration of sanctioned high school lacrosse and the fact that Mountain Ridge was a first-year school last year, Bangert said other schools probably weren’t expecting his team to be very strong.

“But I think the cat’s out of the bag on that,” he said. l

Teaching yoga at Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center means I need to stay certified in CPR and first aid. After completing my recent CPR class, the only thing I know for sure is, “Hi, I’m Peri Kinder and I’m certified in CPR” is not the same as “Hi, I’m Peri Kinder and I can save your life.”

My previous medical training was years of watching M*A*S*H episodes, specifically the one where Father Mulcahy performs a tracheotomy on a wounded soldier by slicing open the man’s throat and sticking a pen down his windpipe. We didn’t learn how to do that.

Theoretically, we learned how to identify serious injuries, how to administer aid and how to use an AED (not to be confused with an IED or an IUD).

We were taught the signs of shock, which include being irritable and restless, and I realized I’ve been in shock for a half-century. If someone is in shock, you should cover them with a blanket. I do that after work. I wrap up in a blanket and tell my family, “Stay away. I’m in shock.”

Another technique we covered was how to make small talk with people who are injured. We’re supposed to put them at ease until emergency personnel show up. But I’m terrible at small talk. Someone could have a bone sticking out of their thigh and I’d say, “So, do you like to eat food? Have

During the class, I expressed concern that I wouldn’t be able to remember all this info if there was an actual emergency, but the instructors were truly kind. They said, “Don’t overthink it. Let your training kick in.”

ort Herriman Middle School principal Eric Price is changing the way educators think about discipline, mental health and students’ needs.

Price had only been a principal for 18 months when he was named Principal of the Year by colleagues of the Utah Middle Level Association, who were impressed by his leadership in middle school reform and innovation of effective middle-level practices.

“Even when we’re on lunch break or when we’re carpooling together, he’s always talking about how to make school better for the students, always bouncing ideas off of anybody who will listen,” FHMS teacher PJ Smalley said. “You can tell that he’s not just in this as a job. He really does care about the students.”

Because of Price’s innovations, FHMS looks different from the middle schools of previous generations.

Changes to discipline

Suspension is an outdated practice that has been replaced with restorative justice practices—communication, mediation, student-led problem-solving.

“It’s not about punishing the behavior,” Price said. “It’s about helping a child change the behavior, and a lot of times, it’s figuring out the root of that.”
