Pump Track is coming to Herriman

ater this month a brand-new pump track will be installed along the Midas Creek trail.

A pump track consists of a continuous loop of banks and turns, which allows riders to navigate through the track without pedaling or exerting similar force. All it takes is some balance and coordination to maintain one’s momentum through the course.

“This opportunity came to us almost by accident,” said Herriman’s deputy director of Parks, Events and Recreation Anthony Teuscher. The company contracted by city officials to build the Midas Creek trail “didn’t quite follow the plan,” he said, which left a large open space. “We felt like a pump track

fit well in that space.”

The pump track will only be the second such amenity in the valley, with the other located at Centennial Park in West Valley City, constructed just last year. Teuscher said Herriman City leaders have been in contact with officials of West Valley City as they have prepared for the new amenity.

“I’ve spoken to some of their maintenance workers, and they’ve said it’s been incredibly popular,” Teuscher said.

Herriman leaders will be employing the same contractor as West Valley City to build the pump track, which will cost about $100,000—one of the more economical options according to Teuscher. Herriman’s

track, however, will be a little smaller. It will cater more to younger riders on scooters and bicycles, said Teuscher. But city officials are already considering building a second larger pump track in the Juniper Canyon area.

Part of the process for getting the new amenity approved included an open house where the public was invited to provide its thoughts. Teuscher said the response was “all positive,” and he expects that excitement to only increase as people learn about it and try it for themselves.

“We’re really excited about this amenity,” he said. “It’s a unique feature, and we think it will have a great response.” l

Tour of Herriman pushes forward, virtually

he ride must go on.

The Tour of Utah was canceled earlier this year along with countless other events across the state with no plan for rescheduling later this year. Herriman was originally announced to host the opening stage on Aug. 3.

With no Tour of Utah happening, Herriman officials decided to put on a tour anyway, the Tour of Herriman, touted as a virtual cycling event.

From Aug. 3 to Aug. 9, riders will try

to complete 60 miles of cycling. There are two different options for the tour. The first option gives riders four stage routes over the free route tracking app MapMyRide. Once all four stages are completed, send a screenshot of each route’s completion to events@ herriman.org. Riders can complete the routes in any order.

The second option is simply to ride 60 miles without reporting anything.

Riders can register at the Herriman Events page on the city website. l

Traditionally, Herriman holds its annual Enduro Challenge biking event in August each year. This year will be slightly different with two nights of motocross.

Friday, Aug. 7 will see the youth on the newly designed Butterfield Park track before Aug. 8 when professional riders will hit the track for a motocross-style racing event. Only a limited number of fans will be allowed.

he Herriman Mustangs football team will kick off its season with a locally televised home game on KJZZ-TV. The Mustangs will take on Davis in a rematch of the 2019 season opener where Herriman scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Darts 14-10.

The 2019 season saw Herriman finish as the No. 2 RPI seed for the state tournament and a 9-3 record with its only three losses coming against Corner Canyon (champions), East (semifinalist) and American Fork (finalist). The Mustangs will hope to make a deep-

er playoff run than the quarterfinals it reached last year.

The Mustangs’ non-region schedule could be tough with road games at Corner Canyon and American Fork (which defeated them in the quarterfinals last year) before embarking on a region schedule that features perennial powers Bingham and East.

Herriman tied with East and Bingham for the region title last year, finishing 4-1 in region, which included a 24-14 victory over Bingham. l

Herriman Bucks return for round two

erriman residents who were big fans of the city’s Shop Around program can rejoice: the mini-stimulus initiative with a local focus is coming back for round two.

This June, Herriman City leaders mailed out a new kind of currency to its residents: Herriman Bucks. The small paper gift certificate entitled residents to $10 off a purchase of $20 at participating Herriman businesses.

“I think it was just a good incentive for people to get out and shop local,” Powell said. “For us, it was great. We took in a couple hundred of them.”

For some residents, the hardest part of the whole program was just deciding which local business to support with their Herriman Bucks. The second time around, they’ll have a little more flexibility with that decision.

“Instead of sending out one $10 Herriman Bucks card, we will be sending out three $10 Herriman Bucks cards,” Moody said.

That way, residents can use one card at three different businesses if they want.

Local principal influences state, national mental health initiatives

L

ocal principal Dixie Garrison, of West Jordan Middle School, has influenced education policies at national and state levels while serving as president of the Utah Association of Secondary School Principals.

Much of her work has been advocating to improve students’ mental health.

“As an educator, the biggest thing that you want to do is to have that effect on kids, to make their life better in some way,” Garrison said. “And if the message—or who I am and what I stand for and the work that I’ve done—if that trickles down to help save a kid and make their life better, then that’s the biggest thing I’ve been able to do. It’s not about trips to Washington D.C., which are really cool, but to have that platform.”

As Utah’s representative within the national association, Garrison met with legislators and advocated for funding for mental health and school safety initiatives and for inclusion policies for groups such as minorities and LGBTQ+.

“A lot of the state representatives are really receptive to our message—definitely the mental health and safety issues—and Congress has provided funding around those initiatives,” Garrison said.

Federal funding for the 2019–20 school year increased $1.17 billion with Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants for school counseling and mental health programs. Another $10 million was invested in the Safe Schools and Education pilot program.

Last October, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced $71.6 million to improve student access to mental health resources and school safety measures.

In Utah, last year’s Student Support Bill provided $26 million to hire more school counselors, psychologists, social workers and nurses. It also helped fund mental health training and the Safe UT app. This year’s amendment defined standards for mental health screenings.

“This is the most important school counseling bill that we’ve had in our state history,” said Utah Rep. Steve Eliason at the bill signing in April 2019. “It appropriates a record amount of funding.”

Garrison’s own Jordan District has seen increased funding for mental health initiatives. Funds through a Project AWARE federal grant provided mental health firstaid trainings and social emotional learning curriculum. JSD committed to hiring a fulltime school psychologist for each elementary school with the $710 million mental health budget allocated by the school board in 2018.

JSD qualified for the maximum amount of Student Support Bill matching funding, which they used to hire additional full-time therapists and counselors, reducing their

counselor to student ratios to well below state and national averages.

JSD also created a Health and Wellness Team to connect students and families with local mental health resources. This year, funding was used to sponsor more than 100 students to receive a free trial period of mental health counseling with community partners.

“That makes it not scary for a lot of families who have never explored it, who are scared about getting mental health services or who might just not be able to afford it,” said Health and Wellness Specialist McKinley Withers.

The program had a successful first year and was a valuable resource when students lost access to school services this spring due to the pandemic.

Withers said mental health support will be imperative as students come back to school amid current health and social issues.

“We have been brainstorming with our counselors and psychologists, coming up with as many different strategies and ideas to address the unique nature of all the kids coming back,” Withers said. Each school’s administration team will have the flexibility to respond to their students’ needs within their own school culture.

Garrison anticipates her students at West Jordan Middle School will need extra mental health support this year. Even though her national position term has ended, she continues to advocate for mental health and for minority and LGBTQ+ support initiatives in her school and in the state. Garrison continues to serve, as she has for the last seven years, on the Utah Suicide Prevention Advisory Board.

Award-winning counselors credit a culture of collaboration

T

he Copper Mountain Middle School counseling team—Hillary Emmer, Melisa Christiansen, Nic Hale, Amy Gibson and Teresa Bills—was named The Utah School Counselor Association’s Utah School Counseling Team of the Year for 2020–2021.

“They are fantastic individually and incredible as a team,” CMMS Assistant Principal Michael Christensen said. “This team is firmly focused on what is best for the individual student. They work tirelessly to advocate for student success and social-emotional wellness for all.”

The team members credit their success to collaboration.

“As team members, we realize those strengths that each of us have,” Hale said. “We’re able to execute those to best help the kids.”

The counselors do everything as a team.

When Christiansen was named the Utah Career Technical Education Association’s Counselor of the Year this spring, she said it felt odd to be singled out.

“Everything we do, we do collaboratively,” Christiansen said. “I couldn’t do what I do without them.”

She said teachers and administrators are also part of the teamwork needed to meet students’ needs.

“They give us classroom time when we ask,” she said. “They give us names of kids that they see that need help. We all work well together and see the value of each other’s jobs.”

Teamwork is common among counselors, who often share ideas with other schools. This year, a districtwide social emotional learning program, developed by Mountain Creek Middle counselor Becky Hunsaker, will ease their workload. Counseling teams at all 12 middle schools in Jordan District are contributing materials and lesson plans and will take the lead for one of the monthly themes.

“As counselors, we’re wearing more hats than we ever have,” Hunsaker said. “Our anxiety rates are just through the roof, and so we’re needing to do more groups and individual counseling. We really need a strong [social emotional learning program]—something that we don’t have to always re-create the wheel.”

CMMS Principal Lauren Peacock recognizes the variety of responsibilities school counselors have.

“They’re supporting kids for mental health, helping them register for classes, helping with peer conflicts and then also taking a look at college and career preparation,” she said.

Parents and students most often interact with counselors to make schedule changes, but Bills said the majority of what counselors do is to support struggling students.

“There’s a lot of challenges that kids have that get in the way of being able to be successful in school,” Bills said. “All the

things that we do are to help them have that support so that they can.”

On average, Utah school counselors are responsible for the individual needs of about 650 students. Jordan District administrators have worked to reduce that ratio to one counselor per 350 students. Previous CMMS administrator Cody Curtis prioritized hiring more counselors so that last year each CMMS counselor worked with just 240 students.

“Just that difference of 100 kids really lets you focus on those 250 kids,” Emmer said.

“But it also lets you do other programs beyond just working one-on-one with students.”

The team collaborates on schoolwide activities and competitions for Career Week and College Week. Team members also all contribute to the creation of virtual material.

The team experimented with new tools when it didn’t have direct access to students because of COVID-19. Through Facebook Live segments, counselors provided tips on relaxation techniques, self-care and positive thinking. Hale was even able to model in real-time his response to an aftershock as he was filming a segment on breathing exercises on March 18.

The team is prepared to be flexible and inventive for this unique school year.

“Counseling with masks and face shields on is going to be difficult, because so much of what we communicate is through body language,” Bills said. “That makes it really hard when you can’t see the facial expressions of those that you’re working with.”

They are exploring solutions such as virtual student support groups, a Canvas classroom and virtual teaching materials. They’ll also be adapting some of their regular activities to engage with students on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. “We’re not opposed to new ideas or to trying new things,” Bills said.

Gibson and Hale are leaving the team to open the counseling center at the new Hidden Valley Middle School in Bluffdale.

“It was a phenomenal team, and I feel really grateful to have been trained by them,” Gibson said. “We’ll take that very strong collaboration spirit with us wherever we go.”

Jordan School District’s K–8 curriculum to be placed online, ready for school year

T

his past year, about 50 kindergartners through eighth graders were learning digitally long term as part of the home and hospital program in Jordan School District. There were others who were learning online for other various reasons—and those don’t include students who were part of the “soft closure,” in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of long-term online learners may increase this fall, as families may choose to have children home with the increased risk of getting COVID-19, district officials said.

While in early July, the re-entry plans for school had not be finalized, what was determined was to provide kindergarten through eighth grade students online curriculum.

“We need to have education be flexible to meet the needs of parents without overburdening teachers,” District Superintendent Anthony Godfrey said at a recent Jordan Board of Education meeting. “The whole curriculum is being developed by selected teachers from every grade who in the past helped develop material and who now have been noticed on how well they have been teaching online.

This curriculum will help every student, every teacher, with whatever the circumstances.”

Already, Jordan District has high school curriculum available online as part of the Utah Students Connect Consortium, where about 900 Jordan students are enrolled.

The K–8 curriculum development, spearheaded by Digital Teaching & Learning K-12 Administrator Ross Menlove, involves about 50 “rock star” teachers, from every grade in every feeder system, who have been spending six hours per day during three weeks in late June through July 17 to develop core curriculum lesson plans for a 180-day school year.

The Jordan teachers are working handin-hand with Nebo School District educators, as the two districts use some of the same materials in addition to the state core curriculum.

Jordan teachers are also using resources provided by Davis School District officials and may partner with other districts as well. Nearby Canyons School District also is developing their K–8 curriculum.

kids who physically cannot be at the school,” Menlove said. “We just wanted to make sure we have an option for parents. The option isn’t just ‘here, do this online.’ It’s ‘do this with a teacher.’ You still have a teacher. You still have someone who is going to create a class culture, who keeps you connected to the school and to the school community.”

While developing the curriculum, teachers were working in teams.

“They’re all doing it together,” he said.

“They come in, and we provide the appropriate social distancing and have a bunch of rooms. We make sure they feel comfortable.

We’re having them build it that way so it’s a consistent voice from start to finish.”

The teacher teams focus on an area— math, reading, writing and science—with social studies being included in the reading and writing portions. After a baseline is created on the Canvas platform, teachers will have a few weeks before school begins Aug. 17 to tailor it to their classes—whether they are teaching online or in-person, dual-immersion, special education, accelerated and gifted students or those who need additional learning assistance, Menlove said.

Silver Crest sixth grade teacher Dylan Funk said the teachers just “hit the ground running” as they figured out the best way to organize and develop the curriculum.

“It’s overwhelming at first, but as you wrap your hands around it and get into it, you get a rhythm, and it goes from there,” he said.

“The more we get into the project, the more exciting it is to see it developing. Everyone there is passionate about it.”

Assigned fifth grade math to develop with others, Funk said the lesson plans on Canvas will be more of an “organized scaffolding” or “a road map of tools you can use” to teach students. In addition, several creative ways and tools are being shared to engage students to enhance the core curriculum.

The curriculum is designed in modules, and students, parents and teachers will know they have certain materials and points to cover during a number of days before moving onto the next module, said Ami Anderson,

Take It Outside For the last five months, we’ve been locked up with our families for 17 years. Each day is another long, hot trek to bedtime. Parents break their brains thinking up creative ways to entertain their kids during this “summer vacation” that started in March and threatens to continue through fall. The phrase “Families Can Be Together Forever” is now a terrifying prophecy.

Here’s what we’ve learned: Sometimes video games ARE the answer.

Celebrities share Tik Tok videos about being “stranded” in their $6.5 million log cabins where everyone has their own TV, floor, masseuse, trampoline and personal chef. I’m not belittling their suffering, I’m just . . . well, I guess I am.

Everyone is heading outside to escape.

Extended families stretch the “No large gathering” rules to the max because COVID wouldn’t ruin the annual family reunion, right? Lakes, canyons, national parks and camp sites are packed with people who thought they were the only ones who needed a break from looking at the same dirty carpeting for one more day.

I’ve been on several hikes this summer, sometimes with the puppy, sometimes with the grandkids. Not necessarily relaxing, but at least we take the fight to a different location.

My latest hike was tackling Bell’s Canyon with my daughter and three of my grandkids, including a 3- and 4-year-old. If that sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel, you are correct.

Before we even started up the trail the complaining began.

“I’m so hot.” “The trail is too steep.”

“The dirt is too dirty.” “I’m so thirsty.”

My daughter told me to shut up and set a better example, but it was too late. The littles were soon echoing my whines at super-high decibel levels. I ended up confiscating water bottles after a good portion was dumped onto the trail to make mud. I explained to the toddlers what happens when you dehydrate. They didn’t care.

It took roughly five days to make our way to the reservoir where the kids splashed in the cool water, tossed wet sand at each other, threw crackers at the ducks, slipped on the rocks and screamed at the dragonflies.

I considered calling in a rescue helicopter, figuring the expense was worth not having to walk back down the trail. Instead, we bribed the kids with McDonald’s, promising processed chicken parts if they’d walk faster than a drugged porcupine. We made it back to the car exhausted, sunburned and

grumpy – just like a normal summer hike!

Backyards are also being used to their fullest. Our luxurious backyard pool (a 6’ wading pool from Walmart) is usually a weird shade of green and full of dead bugs, but that doesn’t stop us from soaking in the probably dangerous water, eating popsicles. If I don’t get sick from COVID, malaria might be another option.

The grandkids set up a tent a couple of weeks ago, hoping to have a backyard campout.

They roasted marshmallows over the grill and climbed into their sleeping bags only to be shaken awake two hours later by a microburst that threatened to carry them to Oz. Everyone was safe, but traumatized, which seems to be the status quo in these crazy times.

Returning to school is the big debate right now, followed by what should be a strange Halloween and holiday season.

Sure makes eternity feel like a really long time. l
