C

orner Canyon High’s football team has been dominating the state the past few seasons, winning 37 games while losing just one as they won the 5A state championship in 2018 and the 2019 6A title. That loss was by one point—34-33— in the 2017 5A state semifinals against Skyridge and the Chargers have simply been on a tear ever since, outscoring opponents by an average of more than 30 points a game. Its closest game was a 21-17 win over Lone Peak last fall while only three of the 26 games over the past two years have been one-score contests.

The nation has also been taking notice with the Chargers beginning the 2020 season ranked just outside the top 25 by Max Preps.

“It’s a welcomed challenge and it’s what you’re trying to achieve as a program,” head coach Eric Kjar said. “Then, it becomes the pressure for your program to step up to the challenge and meet those high expectations. So, it’s a good thing.”

Wide receiver Cody Hagen said the team navigated through the offseason amidst the pandemic by social distancing, wearing masks and working in smaller groups to prepare for the year. “It feels great to be able to get back into the swing of things. We are super excited to get into the season,” he said.

“We all heard that our season was getting shortened and how it could also get canceled which discouraged us. Hopefully, we can finish the season healthy.”

‘Golden Spoke’ marks the eastside connection of Salt Lake County and Utah County trails

Y

ou’d have to travel nearly two hours to remote northwestern Utah to see Golden Spike National Historical Park, a place commemorating the connection of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. But Utah’s new “Golden Spoke” is minutes away and it’s best seen by bicycle or on foot.

The Golden Spoke is a bronze monument plaque embedded in the trail located at 11642 Frontage Road, in front of the Staker Parson building and the entrance to Flight Park Road at the county line. It marks the point of connection where Draper City and Lehi City’s trails meet. It was celebrated at a ribbon cutting ceremony held July 28.

The Golden Spoke plaque signifies the connection of more than 30 miles of continuous trail between Salt Lake and Utah counties. Lehi made the connection complete by expanding its Historic Lehi Rail Trail and

connecting to Draper’s Point of the Mountain Trail.

“This has been in the works for a long time and it’s something both cities have looked forward to. You can go from Sandy down to Provo with this connection. We thought it would be fun to call it the Golden Spoke,” said Rhett Ogden, Draper City’s Parks and Recreation director.

“I’ve been wanting to see this trail connected for 10 years. It’s a jewel of a connection. You can literally ride on a protected trail from Ogden into Lehi. Lehi City Mayor Mark Johnson said he’d recently ridden the trail with his daughter and that it was especially enjoyable with the wind at their back. “What an awesome addition to both our cities to have these trails.

They’re turning into something spectacular,” he said.

Walker said it’s “the melding of two cities in a tech center economy” and that it’s symbolic of a “symbiotic relationship between Draper and Lehi.”

the pandemic, so he’s currently using the trail for leisure purposes. “I’ve been exploring Draper more now and it’s a good option to get there,” he said.

Hereth used to ride the Jordan River Trail to his previous job in Taylorsville. This connection will allow him to ride the trail from Lehi to the TRAX station in Draper and on to his current job in Salt Lake City.

“If I ever had to go on the eastside, it always seemed too dangerous for me since I like to ride on the trails instead of the roads.

This adds another option for me…a safer connection,” he said. l

Golden Healer Service Dogs make a ‘pawsome’ difference helping people

“

The healing power of dogs is incredible,” Jill Kesler said. The Draper art teacher and cancer survivor adopted her English Cream Golden Retriever, Gus, shortly after she was diagnosed.

Not only did the then 8-week-old puppy bring some much-needed joy to Kesler’s family, but Gus seemed to intuit when Kesler wasn’t feeling well and would sit with her and comfort her.

That intuitive nature and sensitivity is characteristic of the dogs at Golden Healer Service Dogs who are bred and trained to become therapy and service dogs. Some, like Gus, become beloved pets. Kesler adopted Gus from Golden Healer Service Dogs founder Mike Carlson last year. “Mike’s program is amazing,” Kesler said.

“There is no other organization like ours in the area,” explained Carlson. “There are organizations that help vets and people who train dogs, but no group that breeds and trains therapy and service dogs.”

Carlson started breeding and training Labrador Retrievers as pets over 25 years as a hobby. In 2008, during the economic downturn, he lost his business and had to regroup.

“That was the only time in my life I didn’t have a dog,” he said. “Roughest years of my life.”

In the ensuing years, Carlson held various jobs, including one in the field of behavioral health which he found rewarding. “It’s a great field to really help people,” he said. “I asked myself, ‘What’s my passion?’ I wanted to do something that had more meaning in life. I love animals and really enjoy being around them. I thought about what I could do to bring that to others.”

Back in the business of breeding Golden Retrievers, Carlson came across the English Cream Golden Retriever breed in 2014. He learned that many of them are used as emotional support and service dogs due to their temperament and disposition.

Golden Healers Service Dogs was officially founded in 2019 and the nonprofit’s first batch of puppies was born in February of that year. Currently, the program has around 30 dogs in various stages of training.

According to their website, Golden Healers can offer clients service dogs to assist them with a variety of issues. There are dogs that are specifically trained to help people of all ages with autism, PTSD and mobility issues. Dogs can be trained to alert family members when someone is about to have a seizure or experience changes in blood sugar levels due to diabetes. There are also emotional support and therapy dogs.

Carlson explained that emotional support dogs are trained in basic obedience while service dogs receive an additional six to 12 months of training in performing specific tasks. “There is no one size fits all scenario in this business,” he said. The needs of each individual are taken into consideration.

Golden Healers relies on volunteers to help with everything from puppy sitting and raising to training. Raquel Mills became a puppy raiser last spring during the quarantine. “We were home and had an older dog. That cute puppy just brought life to our whole house and joy in the midst of uncertainty,” she said.

The family named the new pup Chrystal and Mills decided to train her to become a therapy dog. She was inspired by the story of a woman in Las Vegas who brought her dog to visit first responders in the aftermath of the 2017 mass shooting. The power of animals to calm anxiety in humans is well established by science.

“We’re going through the training to be on a pet therapy team,” Mills explained.

“We’ve visited hospice patients and nursing homes.”

Utah State University student Kiara D’Amico also started out volunteering as a puppy raiser in December 2019. “Puppy raisers basically take the dog everywhere,” D’Amico explained. The idea is to thoroughly socialize the puppy.

“Every month we have a big group training which all the dogs come to,” she said.

we went on TRAX to get them used to trains.

We’ve been to the mall. The goal is to keep the dogs focused in different environments.”

D’Amico enjoys taking her dog, Violet, to interact with people living in nursing homes. “That’s really rewarding,” she said.

“It’s the best part.”

Around the same time that she started working with Violet, D’Amico was diagnosed with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) which causes problems with breathing and other serious symptoms. D’Amico has decided to train Violet as her service dog.

“Violet has made me realize how lucky I am, that I am still able to get around,” she explained. “It helps to have the responsibility of caring for someone else. Having to take her out gets me out of the house.”

D’Amico also suffers from a failing kidney and will learn in September if she is a candidate for a transplant. “If I get the transplant, I’ll need Violet a lot more because I’ll be bedridden,” she said. D’Amico plans to start training her dog to do tasks such as bringing her medication and alerting family members if she needs help.

Canyons Education Foundation awards scholars who rise up to meet life’s, school’s challenges

hings just weren’t going right when Alexa Davis went to pick up her cap and gown last spring. There was a mixup on the rental payment, and when she called for help, there was no answer on the call she placed to her grandmother, who she lives with.

Instead of walking away with the cap and gown, she only received her honor cord for earning Corner Canyon High School’s career and technical education pathway, along with the state’s requirements.

“My counselor wanted me to come check in with her, so I went in to see her afterward, all frustrated,” Davis said. “I thought she wanted to talk, but when I got there, I had no idea what was going on. All these people were staring at me and I was so confused. Then they pulled out this big cardboard check for the scholarship and I was surprised, like ‘was this for real?’”

Her grandmother, with her cell phone on silent, was there too, beaming at her.

Davis was one of eight Canyons Education Foundation recipients, who were awarded partial college scholarships during the soft closure of schools in response to COVID-19. She and Brighton High’s Asha Brown received the Rising Star $2,500 scholarships while $1,000 awards were granted to Alta High’s Abby Coleman, Brighton High’s Stryder Poulson, Corner Canyon’s John Glavin, Diamond Ridge High’s Natalie Sala, Hillcrest High’s Yovanni Valdez, and Jordan High’s Rose Briones.

The annual Bright Star Scholarship rewards $1,000 to a senior from each high school in Canyons School District who has shown improvement or exemplary effort in working toward the goal of post-secondary education. The Rising Star Scholarship of $2,500 rewards those from the district who have “risen” above trying circumstances either in family life, financially, emotionally or scholas-

tically, and is still dedicating themselves to furthering their education, said Denise Haycock, Canyons Education Foundation development officer.

The scholarship winners were selected by a committee made up of Canyons Education Foundation board members. Each board member follows a rubric and scores on goals, effort, recommendations and overall impression, she said.

These funds will help make college more foreseeable for these eight students this fall, or in Davis’ case, this summer as she already enrolled and has been studying online at Salt Lake Community College. She hopes to take some in-person as well as online classes in the fall and earn her associate’s degree.

Her dream? An elementary school teacher.

“Without the help of my high school counselor, Amy Hardcastle, and my grandma, I wouldn’t receive this scholarship—and my favorite teacher, Mrs. (Summer) Huntamer; she helped me with the path of what I want to do in my life,” Davis said.

For Davis, it was a rocky path. Her early childhood days were in Naples, Florida, where her parents were struggling with drug addiction and her dad was “in and out of jail.”

“There was a lot of stuff that was

not appropriate or good for us to be around,” she said about growing up in that environment with her sister, who is two years younger. “I took on a protective role for my sister. Our mom disappeared, abandoned us at one point. Dad brought us here to give us a new life, get us out of a bad scene.”

She was 12 when she came to Utah and stayed with her grandmother.

Then, her dad died of an overdose and her mother reappeared and took the two girls to Ohio.

“Mom and her boyfriend were still using, and it wasn’t a good situation. I didn’t feel safe, I didn’t feel good about my sister and I living there,” Davis said.

Unbeknown to her, her grandmother was asking for custody, a three-month process, that got her back to the Beehive State in December as a teenager.

“Even though I was back here, I still struggled with depression, selfdoubt, PTSD and didn’t have much motivation,” Davis said. “Without the support I’ve gotten and am still getting, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

With that support, Davis has been able to be a tutor for Willow Springs Elementary, testing out the desire to be a teacher as well as work part-time in the field with youngsters. She also has had an internship with first-graders.

“First and second grade were my favorite (growing up),” she said. “I enjoyed teaching kids and helping make a positive difference in the world.”

And as for her cap and gown, her grandmother was able to clear it up.

Shortly after, Davis was able to get out of the car that was driven up to the school, shake hands with her principal and pose for a photo.

“It was a quick process, more than I expected we’d have, but I enjoyed it and was glad our accomplishments were celebrated,” she said. “I’m so Corner Canyon’s John Glavin received a Canyons Education Foundation scholarship from the grateful for the scholarship and being Canyons Education Foundation. Local education foundations, businesses and community come together to support students

I

t was a more streamlined event, but still people showed up and donated school supplies, clothing, and other items for students in need.

It was the Tools for Schools, a fundraising drive that supports 11 area school districts as well as charter schools and the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind.

Local businesses and individuals could drop off needed items Aug. 11-13 at the Shops at South Town, where Z104 radio personalities, Dave and Deb, and local school officials accepted donations and sorted them to the needs of each district. Items also were collected that were earmarked for a particular district.

Cash donations were also accepted, including with a link to Jordan Credit Union, who disbursed the funds, and allowed those who wanted to participate to do so at a safe distance.

“Even with a pandemic, kids still need things and we still want to do it,” said Denise Haycock, Canyons Education Foundation development officer. “We had four volunteers instead of 20 and plan to just sort donations by district, not stuffing backpacks or anything more.”

In years past, Haycock said they had “boxes and boxes of backpacks and food— probably thousands of backpacks last year” which they filled with the donated school supplies. That allowed Canyons to help

“cover the bubble schools, those that aren’t covered by United Way and their business partners, but could still use the help.”

This year’s list not only includes pencils and pencil sharpeners, but also the “accessory of the year”—masks.

“We take any kind—homemade, sewn, store bought. Our risk management will approve them for the health and safety of our kids. Hand sanitizer also is something new on the list,” she said.

Jordan Education Foundation Director Steven Hall said that filling principals’ pantries at the schools was something they re-

quested.

“We have a lot of insecure kids and now, homeless, especially during COVID-19,” he said. “We have one in five children who are needing assistance.”

He said clothing, including underwear, as well as personal hygiene items, school supplies and backpacks rounded out his foundation’s wish list.

“Donations make an impact,” he said.

“If it’s one backpack, then that’s one more backpack we have to give a child than we did before. Every contribution makes a difference.” l

Juan Diego girls soccer team back on field

oung talent is expected to help the Juan Diego Catholic High School girls soccer team this season with two freshmen and a sophomore already having scored in the squad’s first few games.

“It’s so refreshing to have an infusion of talented players who have competed at a high level,” head coach Joe Baca said. “They come in so developed and strong that they’ll take playing time from some of our older girls.”

Baca and co-coach Joe Alamilla have emphasized conditioning throughout the summer along with technical aspects of the game including passing, dribbling and shooting. “As we assemble our lineups, we are continually looking for who has the best touches, the mental edge and versatility to allow us to take them from more natural positions and put them where this team needs them,” Baca said.

So far this season, Juan Diego defeated Cyprus 7-0 Aug. 3.

Junior Madison Burnham recorded a hat trick while the other four goals for the Soaring Eagle came from senior captain Sammee Herrera, junior Kira Rhay, freshman Kate DiGiandomenico and freshman Maia Rhay. The Rhay sisters also combined for five assists in the win.

Juan Diego lost to Weber 4-0 Aug. 6 and Cedar City Aug. 7 4-0 before defeating Hillcrest 2-1 Aug. 11. Against the Huskies, the squad turned a 1-1 game at halftime into a win behind goals from sophomore Hailey Mezenen and Kira Rhay. On Aug. 13, they were again knotted up at half one-all before giving up two second-half goals in a 3-1 loss to Judge Memorial. Kira Rhay scored the team’s lone goal.

In its first Region 10 matchup, the Soaring Eagle squad defeated Uintah 3-0 Aug. 19 with Mezenen, Burnham and Herrera each scoring a goal. Against Cedar Valley Aug. 24, they lost 3-0.

“I think our season so far has gone decent,” said senior captain Ellie Simkins, who has been nursing a sprained ankle. “It’s been tough to watch us lose some games that we could have won with a little more connection. But, we have been doing some social distancing team bonding events and that is helping us play more unified on the field.”

Freshman Jada Mirabile agreed. “We’ve been working hard to build chemistry, and I think it shows more and more every game,” she said. “We want to be the best teammates, sportswomen, and players we can, not just for ourselves but for each other.”

Region play continues with home-and-away matchups scheduled through early October against Ogden, Tooele, Ben Lomond, Stansbury. Uintah and Cedar Valley as Juan Diego aims to get past the first round of the state tournament, a feat they haven’t accomplished since its 2016 state championship.

The COVID-19 situation has certainly changed things for the Soaring Eagle team and Simkins has found herself leading in a challenging time. “This has challenged me to push the team a little more to carefully follow protocols so we can have a year,” she said.

The JDCHS tradition of gathering for a prayer and cheer after each practice and game with their arms around each other looks a little different right now as the teammates stand together, but 6 feet apart. They have also decided to not come together to hug each other following goals scored in the games. “We do what we call, ‘Bring it around town’ where we just dance by ourselves in a ‘no-contact’ celebration,” Simkins said. “We’re just trying to do everything we can to protect our own families who have some high-risk members.”

Baca commended Juan Diego’s athletic administration, including Chris Long and Sam Salts, for the measures they have taken to manage UHSAA’s guidelines amidst the current pandemic. “The school’s done an amazing job and are great examples of taking precautions at every turn,” Baca said. “Our games have been so protocol and our other sport’s coaches are really helpful in sharing the field for practices as we all navigate this uncertain time.”

In its first game of the year, the Chargers led 42-0 at halftime in a win over Farmington 49-20 Aug. 14. Bell and Dart combined for 170 yards on the ground and four touchdowns while Dart completed 14 of 15 passes for 230 yards and three more scores. Noah Kjar caught five passes for 83 yards and a touchdown while four other receivers—Bell, Hagen, Handley and Meine—hauled in a combined 10 catches for 147 yards and two TDs. Harrison Taggart’s nine tackles and Cahoon’s eight led the way defensively while Jayden Kaio and Brody Ross each recorded a sack.

“I thought we played a good game on both offense and defense with the score being 49-0 while our starters were in,” Hagen said. “There are always a few things you can fix and get better at, but overall it was a good game. We were just really excited to get into the season and start playing.”

Against Herriman Aug. 21, Corner Canyon defeated the Mustangs 56-0, again taking a huge halftime lead – 49-0 – before a third quarter touchdown completed the scoring.

Three of Handley’s four receptions went for touchdowns as he finished the game with 156 yards receiving. Noah Kjar hauled in six yards for 258 yards, including a 76-yard reception for a score. Bell and Darts accounted for the other four touchdowns, running two TDs each into the end zone.

Five local students top technology awards in computing

Sandy high school girl recently was named regional winner of the National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing and another, honorable mention.

Hillcrest High freshman Abigail Slama-Catron was honored March 7 as she “significantly demonstrated interest and aptitude for computing.” She was one of the 16 regional winners and received a joint engraved crystal trophy for the high school as well as individual crystals, scholarship opportunities and technology prizes.

West High’s Marianne Liu, also of Sandy, was an honorable mention award-winner.

Rising Star awards went to Kaitlyn Lowe, of Brighton High and CTEC; Ashley Hillstead, of Beehive Academy; and Grace Haglund, of Olympus High.

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors ninth- through 12th-grade students for their computing-related achievements and interests, and encourages them to pursue their passions. Award recipients are selected based on their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for post-secondary education.

Slama-Catron has participated six years with robotics teams where she has learned

engineering, problem-solving, principles of construction, working collaboratively on a timeline and how to communicate—the latter as she mentored a team from the School of the Deaf and the Blind while knowing little sign language. She also said through her experiences she has learned to think outside the box to identify a problem and find possible solutions.

She recently was a teen panelist for a national computer science conference and is meeting with NASA officials to introduce astronomy activities to local Girl Scouts. Her career goal is to be a NASA capsule communicator.

Other area regional winners are Manya Nair, Riverton High; Katelyn Swain, JATC; Maili Vu, AMES; Maya Heesch, Providence Hall; Sanjana Kargi, Hillcrest High; and Sydney Leister, Mountain Ridge High.

Being a mom to kids with mental health challenges

“I want to die. I’m done.” Those were the words I heard from one of my children several years ago. It was late one evening, my husband was out of town, and when my son came to me for help, my brain was reeling… I didn’t know what to do.

I’m not alone when it comes to having children, a spouse, or other family members with mental health challenges.

As I’ve worked on these issues as a Salt Lake County Councilmember, and on the state’s mental health crisis response commission, I know we need to talk openly and break the stigma. I’m grateful to my family members who have given me permission to share some of our experiences…

A few of my kids have struggled with anxiety — it runs in my family. In fact, I can relate with how they feel because I, too, have battled it. After years of putting myself in high-anxiety situations, meeting with a helpful therapist, and learning my triggers (lack of sleep is the biggest one), I’ve been able to mostly overcome it. But my kids have had to learn in their own ways what their anxiety triggers are, and what they are willing to do to over-

had ever felt. I wanted to fix things for him, make him all better, and watching him suffer was difficult to watch. We were lucky it was a short-term issue.

So back to the son at the beginning of this article… I took him to the hospital. And later found out that some hospitals are better for suicidality than others.

I learned how hard it is to be the parent of a loved one who was suicidal. Every day I would worry if he slept in too long, or if he didn’t come home on time. I had nightmares about finding him dead. It was such a scary time and I’m so grateful he got the help he needed and is doing so well now! My advice to all of you who are struggling or are watching a family member struggle… talk to someone. Don’t suffer in silence. This illness totally sucks for so many reasons. I’ve had some of my kids who have tried medication and decided it didn’t help them much, and others who are grateful for modern medicinal miracles.

It’s work. Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health are intertwined.

I’ve experienced depression as both the patient and the spouse. After my second baby was born, I found myself dealing with post partum depression and it was awful. Not necessarily known for our patience, Americans are suffering from COVID fatigue. People can’t wait for things to return to a “new normal” like suddenly everything’s going to be ice cream sundaes and furry kittens. The way 2020 is going, the new normal will probably be kitten sundaes and furry ice cream.

Our world has changed, for better or worse, so now’s a good time to decide what we keep and what we toss. I’m all for tossing office jobs, dress pants and family reunions, while keeping pajamas-as-clothes, Uber Eats and virtual baby showers.

Let’s look at how the new normal is evolving, shall we?

Sports – Like a canary in a coal mine, team sports started up this summer with the hope of bringing entertainment to millions of sports-starved individuals, and millions of dollars to money-starved sports organizations.

It’s been a bit Hunger Games-ish

as teams drop out once their players contract COVID. Who’d have thought activities that include spitting, shouting, sweating and grunting could easily spread viruses?

School – Or as I like to call it, the Catch-22 Education Plan.

Parents and teachers are negotiating this real-life version of Oregon Trail where one wrong move can end up with junior high students being eaten by cannibals in Donner Pass. (Not the worse thing.) Here’s an idea: make the best decision for your family without judging everyone else.

Parenting – Let’s just agree that “screen time” rules have been suspended indefinitely, and it’s just fine if your toddler wears the same outfit for three days. Let’s also agree chicken nuggets are healthy, YouTube personalities are annoying, and everyone gets a blue ribbon for doing the best they can.

Work – Every introvert’s birthday wish was granted when they were told to work from home.

Turns out, with these new-fangled computers, lots of stuff can be done at home. Who knew? Maybe companies don’t need 50,000 square feet of office and ping-pong space, or outdoor meditation biospheres.

Date night – You’ve spent an inordinate amount of time with your significant other. You’ve worked from home together, prepared 5,459 meals together, rearranged closets, sock drawers and bathroom cabinets. Maybe the new normal will be individuals spending date night alone, so they don’t drive to the grocery store one day and end up with a new life in Cheyenne.

Weddings – Can we please standardize virtual weddings? That is all.

Holidays – Even with social distancing guidelines, summer holidays stayed the same as everyone went to national parks, held BBQs and spent the day sitting at the community pool with hundreds of other people. These holidays were

always followed by a COVID spike. I’m sure the fall/winter holidays will be no different because people are crappy at following CDC advisories.

The 2020 Election – It’s been 28 years since the 2016 election and this year’s election has disaster written all over it. Literally. Will there be mail-in ballots?

Russian interference? A loser who refuses to leave the White House?

Civil war? The return of our alien overlords? All of the above? My best guess for election aftermath is equivalent to shaking a Magic 8 Ball, and then lighting it on fire.
