PANDEMIC PUPS LEARN GOOD MANNERS AT K9 LIFELINE

M

arch 23 is National Puppy Day. Established in 2006, the holiday was designated to celebrate dogs and advocate for pet adoption. There is much to celebrate this year. During the pandemic, the number of pets adopted from rescue shelters has soared. According to the Shelter Animals Count, which tracks activity in 500 animal shelters across the US, 26,000 more pets were adopted in 2020, an increase of 15%.

While it is wonderful that so many pets have found their forever homes, the fact remains that puppies—and older dogs for that matter—do not come with instruction manuals. New pet owners need to work with their dogs to socialize them and instill good behaviors. K9 Lifeline in Draper helps dog owners to care for, train and socialize dogs of all ages, sizes and temperaments.

For 20 years, K9 Lifeline has offered dog training, daycare, grooming, boarding and sometimes adoption services to the community. The business has been in its current Draper location for 11 years.

K9 Lifeline owner and founder, Heather Beck, summed up her philosophy of dog training. “It’s not just about ‘sit’ and ‘stay,’” she said. “It’s about relationships. Every interaction you have with a dog is training. Dogs are like children, they absorb everything.”

Beck has been working with dogs for decades. A Midwesterner, she came to Utah in 1995 as a competitive mogul skier. At the same time, she started fostering dogs as a volunteer with Best Friends Animal Society. She graduated from Westminster College and established her own rescue center focusing on pit bulls and large Continued page 5

Summit Academy captures historic 2020 year sealing their thoughts, mementos in a time capsule

“If I could save time in a bottle/the first thing that I’d like to do/is to save every day/‘til eternity passes away/just to spend them with you.” hen Jim Croce wrote and sang the lyrics of “Time in a Bottle,” he certainly didn’t mean them to capture the time spent during a pandemic. However, that’s what 771 Summit Academy students tried to do—capture the time spent during the pandemic year of 2020 and seal them into a time capsule.

“The students have just lived though a year that was history in the making,” Summit Academy Principal Lindy Hatch said. “2020 will be a year that their children will be learning about in history class. I felt that this was a perfect opportunity for them to document what life in 2020 was like for them.”

trophy case, will be reopened in 20 years, not only to play along with the year 2020, but also because Hatch “thought it would be fun because some of our students will still be around in 20 years to be there when it is opened.”

In January 2021, after gathering items to place in the time capsule from students, staff and faculty and the student-parent organization, a ceremony was livestreamed.

As part of the momentous occasion, the SPO held an essay-writing contest to the theme, “Turning the Trials of 2020 into Triumphs for 2021.”

“We had several submissions, especially from the third- and fourth-grade classes. I was very impressed with how many students have taken time to really reflect on the events of the past year and find the good that came out of it.

I’m glad they were able to look on the positive side of things,” she said.

In the kindergarten through second-grade category, first place went to Gracie Powell, who read her essay at the ceremony; second, Hadley Aoki; and third, Kolson Bitner. In third- and fourth-grade classes, Zoey Bradshaw won, Emerson Brady earned second place and Harlow McCleery and Ryker Reid were third. For fifth- through eighth-grade, first place was awarded to Isabella Parker, second to Avery Devlin and third place to Makaya Pizza.

Zoey’s winning essay was read by Emily Fox and Isabella’s essay by Kamdyn Simons, then those essays and Gracie’s were placed in the time capsule.

Student council members, who are seventh- and eighth-graders, also took part in the ceremony by sharing what each grade added to the time capsule.

Those highlights included kindergartners

sharing that their short school days got even shorter, but they were still able to learn reading, writing and arithmetic and they learned and shared songs via videos with their families. First-graders shared that they became better listeners as they heard people speak through masks and their hands became chapped with much hand sanitizer, but they were happy to be in school this fall after the soft closure of schools in March 2020 through the end of that school year.

Second-graders pointed out that dismissal moved up to 1:45 p.m. during the pandemic and third-graders showed their resiliency through forgotten passwords, mute buttons and links that connected them virtually with their teachers. Fourth-graders created a puzzle to be placed in the time capsule that showed they were willing to puzzle things out and problem-solve during quarantine; and plastic figurines linked hand-in-hand showed how fifth-graders were flexible, strong and stuck together during this pandemic.

Sixth-grade teachers submitted a photo of themselves dressed up as characters in the online game, “Among Us,” which became popular during the pandemic, said teacher Natalie Sluga.

“We dressed up as the ‘Among Us’ characters for Halloween and the students just loved it,” she said. “It was a great way to relate to the kids. We became a team and collaborated to unite and fight against the imposter, that being COVID-19. When the kids are quarantined, it can be a sad and depressing time, so this brought us together and the kids thought it was really funny.”

The seventh-grade put together some memes to highlight teaching and learning during the pandemic and eighth-grade included a

model of Atlas to show their strength and grit as they journey on a new pathway in education.

Assistant Principal Paul Lundberg also shared with viewers items that were placed in the time capsule from a mask, hand sanitizer and empty toilet paper roll to class rosters, staff directory and a 2019-20 yearbook. There also were reflection sheets, photos and a current Summit Academy-Draper handbook.

Hatch said that many positive aspects came from the time capsule contest and participation.

“The best thing about it was it gave the students something to look forward to and something positive to focus on. The first day of school back in August was more of a somber day. Everyone was still unsure about how the school year was going to go. There wasn’t much celebrating going on. We wanted to take this opportunity to really add some excitement and joy into our school day,” she said.

To kick off the time capsule event, Hatch had welcomed them back to school in January under a rainbow-colored balloon arch and they posed together for a school photo—even during the social distancing guideline following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I loved being able to clap the students in on Jan. 4. It was not something they were expecting. It was great to see their faces just light up as they walked through the clapping tunnel. It was a great way to start the new year,” Hatch said. “The drone shot that was taken of our entire school was also a highlight for me.

It warms my heart to see all of my kids in one video. That is not something that happens often, especially during a pandemic.” l

Having studied under a well-known dog trainer in California, Beck did in-home dog training and began teaching people about crate training, leash training and canine nutrition. Her eventual goal was to work on socializing dogs, taking “difficult dogs” and getting them together in a space where they could learn to get along in a safe, friendly and structured environment.

K9 Lifeline has put Draper on the map as a “mecca for dog trainers,” as Beck put

it. She has been running dog training workshops for 15 years. Trainers from all over the world have attended workshops at K9 Lifeline.

One trainer who attended Beck’s workshops ended up joining the team. Senior Administrative Assistant Lynnae Chilcott was working as a trainer for another company but was drawn to the Draper business.

“We have so many dogs that end up coming to us because there is nowhere else for them to go. Seeing those dogs become socialized and able to interact with others is wonderful, so fun to see,” Chilcott said.

“Some dogs need a little more guidance and structure, more support. They transform into totally different dogs.”

“Ours is a very unique environment,” Beck said. She emphasized that K9 Lifeline is for all dogs—not just those that have been labeled difficult or aggressive. “We have about 100 to 150 dogs in the facility,” she explained. “Each one has their own unique story and situation.”

In the early days of the pandemic, business at K9 Lifeline dropped off dramatically, although many health care workers started bringing their dogs to daycare. “Then, all of a sudden, everything blew up,” Beck said.

“It got so busy so fast.” Many clients were struggling with growing puppies that weren’t socialized or seeing problem behaviors in their older pets that they weren’t aware of until they were staying home with them.

Currently, the training classes at K9 Lifeline are booked through April, but there is still room for more dogs in boarding and in the daycare program. There are three daycare groups based on the size and age of the dogs, but “temperament overrules everything,” Chilcott said.

There is a group for small dogs and puppies as well as one for older pups and high energy dogs. “We call them the party animals,” Chilcott said. Large breed adult dogs with more mellow dispositions have their own daycare group.

Beck had a few pieces of advice for both experienced dog owners and those who have adopted pups for the first time during the pandemic. She suggested that the best time to start training a dog is at about eight weeks. The period of eight to 16 weeks is a critical developmental stage for dogs. “All of the things that they learn during that time they will maintain for life,” she said.

“One of the things I wish more people would do is to teach a dog how to be comfortable and calm in a crate,” Beck said.

“It’s important for dogs to learn how to selfsoothe.” K9 Lifeline has a YouTube channel which includes a video on how to crate train a pup at home. “Dogs need a lot more downtime than we give them,” she continued. “Puppies need nap time, about 18 to 20 hours of sleep each day.” Young dogs who like to jump and nip may be overtired.

Beck also emphasized the importance

of leash training. K9 Lifeline sells a custom-made, patented “transitional leash.”

Portions of all leash sales go toward training a shelter dog through leash donations.

“I am so grateful and feel so blessed that business is booming,” Beck said. “We are very fortunate to be in Draper.” She noted that Draper is great dog community where people really care about their fourlegged friends.

“What I love most are the clients,” Chilcott said. “We have the most awesome clientele. It’s a privilege to be able to take care of their dogs.”

Local substitute teachers stepped up with greater demand during COVID-19

chools nationwide have been struggling to recruit substitute teachers, who have been in high demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Locally, six substitute teachers speak about their return to the classrooms and the safety precautions in place.

Rebecca Lyon, Canyons School District

It was March 12, 2020, and Rebecca Lyon was substituting at Hillcrest High— the day before former Gov. Gary Herbert placed schools on soft closure to stop the COVID-19 spread. It lasted the rest of the school year.

“We could see it coming,” she said, noting teachers were worried and taking some precautions.

As a former teacher and parent volunteer, Lyon became a substitute teacher in fall 2019.

When Canyons School District reopened its schools in August, she substituted “quite a bit. A lot of them were like ‘can you do the whole week?’”

As teachers would have to quarantine from exposure, jobs increased.

“The teachers have gotten so good at Canvas, it’s become easier for a sub because the kids can just go there. Or sometimes, the teacher would actually teach the class remotely and I just had to take roll,” Lyon said. “I was substituting third grade one time and those little kids all knew how to get online and what to do. The little kids are so diligent and obedient and wear their masks. (At a middle school), a teacher had a chart on the board of which students were supposed to be the ones in charge of wiping the desk down at the end of every period.”

Not only does she substitute for the love of teaching, but also for the pay. She said a bonus working for the district is that she received her COVID-19 vaccinations from the district.

Melissa Sugden, Jordan School District

As Welby Elementary’s former PTA president and a math aide at the school, Sugden decided she wanted to be a substitute teacher.

“I love being at school; it’s just my favorite place to be,” she said.

She decided last March to substitute teach, right before COVID-19 hit.

“I didn’t actually start being a sub until after everything got back going (this past fall),” Sugden said. “I knew the risks of going during COVID. At the beginning of the year, it was really unknown and scary. For me, I was just like if the teachers are going to go in there and my daughter’s there, I may as well go and do what I can.”

Since COVID-19, she said teachers’ lesson plans are in place.

cipal) is really big on making sure teachers have a plan and that has made a huge difference,” she said. “You know exactly what to do and when they need hand sanitizer and when to wash their hands and clean their desks and the kids just do it. They’re prepared just because they know they could be out at any moment for two weeks.”

She also feels safe when she substitutes, and supplies such as masks, hand sanitizer, sprays and wipes have been plentiful.

“That’s an amazing thing. I’ve never seen any kid have a big problem with masks at all. It was kind of surprising how well they wear them,” she said. “We wipe down between every kid and you know, with all this cleaning, I think the schools are cleaner than my house.”

Natalie Fisihetau, Murray School District

Natalie Fisihetau was substituting at Murray High the day the school district closed its doors March 12, a day ahead of the rest of the state.

“The principal got on and said, ‘We need everyone to exit the building,’” she said.

Since school returned in August, she has mostly substituted long term at the high school.

“I love teaching, but I’m on disability

right now. I was a full-time teacher, but I have some issues that I couldn’t do it full time. I need to do it for the money. My husband lost his job and I’m on disability right now,” she said.

Being 60, having a husband who is 65 and taking care of her elderly parents has made her more careful when she’s in the classroom. She has learned to wear her mask so it doesn’t fog up her glasses and to follow the directional arrows in the hallways.

“COVID doesn’t scare me in the schools. I think the district has done a great job,” she said. “I’ve just been really careful and be smart about it.”

By being a long-term sub, Fisihetau is able to access district emails about cleaning and sanitation so she has stayed current with those procedures. She sprays the desks between class periods and allows students to dry them with paper towels.

“Sometimes the classes were very, very small. I might only have six kids in class. I think the most I have had is 20— that is not likely as kids can choose to be online or hybrid. I just go with the flow and put a smile on—although people don’t know that I’m smiling with my mask,” she said.

After teaching for 10 years, Karla Roberts has substituted in elementary schools for more than a decade, appreciating the flexible schedule it has given her to care for her mother and babysit a grandchild.

“I sub in elementary. For me, it’s easy to follow the outline and pick up where the teacher left off,” she said. “My teaching experience has helped a lot.”

During COVID-19, Roberts has opted not to accept any long-term substitution positions.

“I’m sticking to two or three schools because I learned their COVID routines,” she said, adding that schools have strongly enforced not sending kids to school sick.

“If the kids are even having little sniffles, they’re advising them to stay home.”

While kids are wearing masks, washing hands and being socially distanced, Roberts noticed something else about students during COVID-19.

“Students are becoming more responsible for their own learning,” she said.

“They’re understanding the importance of learning after last spring and are logging on and learning what the teacher outlines.

They’re also being responsible for making sure they’re able to stay in school by following the rules and helping to sanitize.”

Roberts said she has been grateful that teachers have been shown appreciation this year.

“They really do appreciate us so much more this year. They’re more aware and are expressing it,” she said.

Twenty-two years later, she still can’t stay home and is substituting in classrooms.

“Back in August, I was a little afraid and I brought my little bag in case I felt like I needed to clean something more,” she said.

“But I didn’t need to. They supplied cleaners so when students switch half the day in dual immersion classes, we cleaned every desk and chair. We even clean every ball they use on the playground.”

Johnson has substituted consistently even though she is around her mother and her son’s mother-in-law, who has stage 4 colon cancer, as well as babysits a grandchild.

“I have been really careful. I don’t go into the lunchroom with the teachers; I stay in the room and eat behind a plexiglass shield. I’m 55 and I actually was one of the first in line the first day (Jordan School District) gave out the COVID shot. It surprised me that we were included and are being appreciated,” she said. “The principal comes in every morning and says, ‘Thank you and we appreciate you coming in.’”

Substituting on Fridays is one of her favorite times.

“That’s when certain kids come in, maybe that’s for extra help, or it could be your top students who want to come in because they want to be at school. This week,

However, she was hesitant about returning to the classroom during COVID-19.

“I decided to wait to see what the schools were like during testing in the fall before I decided to return to substituting,” she said. “After testing, and I saw how things worked, I knew it would be fine. I saw that the teachers, the administration and all the schools have done a great job trying to keep the kids and teachers safe, and trying to keep everything running as smoothly as possible. At every level, preschool to high school, I saw how often they’re cleaning and sanitizing, and they’re wearing masks.”

Mann remembers on March 13 she was substituting at Brighton High when she heard announcements “track got canceled, baseball got canceled, everything got canceled.” Later, she learned schools were canceled.

“I thought about how the students were going to learn. I thought about the teachers.

As teachers, you spend all your days teaching and your nights preparing. It’s a hard profession. I love a good teacher—there’s

when I walk in, and I’m qualified, I’ve taught. I’m not going to be a sub who will turn on a movie. I’m going to carry on, keep the kids on task and carry out the day. I take it very seriously. I respect the kids and they respect me. They’re wanting to learn and I’m there to help them.” l

ifty years ago, the original recording of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice was released in the United States. Since then, the musical retelling of the Old Testament story of Joseph and his coat of many colors has become a beloved staple of American theater.

Draper Historic Theatre will present this classic March 12 through 27.

“We started this journey a year ago,” explained Assistant Director Melissa Van Dam. The pandemic caused this production of “Joseph” to be postponed twice in 2020. For the production team and actors who have been with the show from the beginning, it has taken on a whole new meaning as a labor of love.

“This is a show we’ve been working on for over a year,” said Director Mindy Eckroth.

“We’re so excited to be putting it on, there’s a new energy behind it. We’re just grateful to be here.”

“There’s a feeling of perseverance,” added Van Dam. “We have a really strong bond, like family,” she said of the cast.

One of the main themes of “Joseph” is, in fact, family. Anthony Limb, one of the actors who plays the title role, explained, “I really love that it’s kind of a silly story in the way that it’s told, but it’s very touching. The story is about a family that falls apart and then comes back together. It’s about forgiveness.”

This is not the first time that Limb has played the role. Eleven years ago, as a high school student, Limb donned the famous coat of many colors for an after-school production in his home town of Clearfield. His mother sewed the costume and it is seeing the spotlight once again. “It’s the same coat I wore all those years ago,” said Limb.

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is arguably one of the most often-performed musicals in the state of Utah.

Draper Historic Theatre has put its own unique spin on the show, however.

When it comes to the role of the omniscient Narrator, audiences at Draper Historic Theatre will be seeing double. Amber Ethington and Sarah Schaeperkoetter are each playing the Narrator as the role has been split in two.

“We interpret the songs and dialogue differently,” explained Ethington. “We build a rapport with each other as well as everybody else in the show.”

“The role of the Narrator is so versatile and requires such a broad range,” said Schaeperkoetter. “It’s fun to interact with the other characters and the audience.”

As in many Draper Historic Theatre productions, the main roles in the show have been double cast. There are actually four actors in total playing the Narrator and two playing Joseph, Pharaoh and other roles. Audiences will see different actors depending on the performance they attend.

This particular production also features innovative lighting design and orchestration that was digitally transposed and recorded by the music director. The costumes will incorporate face coverings for the actors and the blocking and choreography has been re-done with social distancing in mind.

“We are just so grateful to be able to make art during these times. We’re being super, super careful,” explained Eckroth.

Measures are being taken to keep audience members safe as well including routine cleaning and sanitization of the theater, mask requirements and distance between seated patrons.

Several cast members spoke of how “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” resonates with the moment we are all living through. Limb finds inspiration in the story. “Joseph is an innocent person thrown into challenging circumstances who keeps his faith in God while coming through it,” he said. He feels that the show is more impactful now and invited audience members to come and “take something special back home with you.”

“Honestly, with everything that divides us right now, this show is all about what brings us together—overcoming hardship and finding family again,” said Van Dam. Schaeperkoetter summed it up: “‘Joseph’ appeals to all audiences. It’s so entertaining, relevant and vibrant you can’t help but smile when you see it.”

City hopes colorful new logo conveys ‘the good life’ in Draper

he green tree and blue mountain background that’s been the city’s symbol for 20 years is being phased out. Draper has a colorful, new, multifaceted logo and an updated website as of February.

Britnee Johnston became Draper’s Communications Director last April. “The idea for re-branding came about in early 2020. The mayor and city council saw a need for updating the logo and the website and creating a design style guide, something the city didn’t have be-

fore,” she said. “Because the city didn’t have that, there was a lack of consistency among departments and programs. A lot of them were using different logos. The council wanted a brand that created a better understanding of all the services and programs we provide. We wanted a more unified voice as a city.”

Input was gathered from various groups and several iterations took place before the new logo was finally chosen. The city started with an analysis of surveys they’d conduct-

ed, including the general plan resident survey from 2019. They also analyzed input from key stakeholders such as business owners, council members and city employees. Research was done on other cities’ logos, both in Utah and nationwide, particularly those who’d updated their logo in the last two years.

“We have a huge economic opportunity headed our way with The Point. That also made it a great time to change our logo to market ourselves to these new businesses and residents coming to Draper, from a local to a national standpoint. I think all eyes will be on Draper in the next few years. We want to look the part of being home to this exciting project,” Johnston said.

The city hopes the new logo will convey the experiences the city provides to work, live and play. “It’s one of the best managed cities in Utah. We have great schools and open space.

Visually it represents our gem which would be our open space in Corner Canyon. I think the variety of colors in our new logo shows the liveliness of Draper and that we’re an active community,” Johnston said.

The new logo was created by Tooza Design, a husband and wife team of graphic designers based in South Jordan. “I think it represents that life is good in Draper,” Johnston said.

The city’s website has a new domain,

draperutah.gov. Those who visit the old site (draper.ut.us) will be redirected to the new site for a period of time. The redesign set out to simplify site navigation coupled with a goal of making it more mobile-phone friendly. The site now features a new trails directory with interactive maps, more information and trail photos.

It has a Covid-19 hub with Draper’s data and resources as well as a demographic dashboard in the economic development section.

According to Johnston, prior to the pandemic, the city had budgeted $50,000 for the new logo and updated website. But Covid made city officials more cost-conscious. “We ended up spending $20,000 on both the rebranding and the website redesign. All the savings came from the website side by staying with the same provider,” Johnston said.

The new logo will be seen more and more as the city makes the transition for all its departments. Updated letterhead, business cards and decals for city vehicles are happening in the next few months. “Down the line we’ll have to look at park signage. All of our physical assets will be a slow transition, but everything digital will transfer over pretty quickly,” Johnston said. Street signs will take the longest. Rather than replacing existing street signs, the city will wait for warmer weather to overlay a sticker decal with the new logo on them. l

Upcoming road projects for the city’s streets

uckle up, proceed with patience and plan for potential alternate routes. The road construction season will soon be upon us and several projects are planned for Draper’s roads.

Scott Cooley serves as Draper’s Public Works Director and Todd Hammond is an engineer in the department. They confirmed the following projects planned for the city’s streets in 2021.

1. 900 East & 12300 South – A new, updated traffic signal will be installed at

the intersection and curb, gutter and sidewalk will be added to 900 East where there is none, “probably on both sides,” Cooley said, adding that the pavement in that area will also be reconstructed.

2. 12200 South & 700 East – Widen the north side of 12200 South, just west of 700 East. Add curb, gutter and sidewalk to tie in to where those already exist.

3. 450 East & 12300 South – A new signal will be installed where there hasn’t been one before. It will be coordinated with the 300 East & 12300 South signal for the flow of traffic. “UDOT will actually install the signal this summer or fall. Our portion of the project is widening 450 East just prior to that signal. In other words, we need a left turn pocket and there’s not one now, so we need to widen that so the signal will function,” Cooley said.

4. Highland Drive & Vestry Road – A new signal will be installed where Vestry Road crosses Highland Drive, near the roundabout and the new recreation center. “There are bus stops in that area.

This signal will help the safety of that intersection for both pedestrians and vehicles,” Cooley said. Highland Drive will be widened to add an additional

lane in each direction so there will be a right and a left turn lane as well as a through lane.

1300 East & Pioneer Road roundabout – Another lane will be added to handle increased traffic in the area. “We will add a second lane through the roundabout in each the northbound and southbound directions, and dedicated right turn lanes will be added on the eastbound and westbound (Pioneer Road) approaches,” Hammond said.

Bangerter Parkway & Vestry Road – A new traffic signal will be installed near the power substation, with Vestry Road on one side and Future Way on the other. Cooley explained that when Pluralsight gets going and with large apartment complexes filling to capacity, this traffic signal is needed.

300 East & 12300 South widening – The north and south legs of 300 East will be widened to add dual left turns in each direction while the already existing single left turn lanes on 12300 South (Draper Parkway), going north or south on 300 East, will remain unchanged. “We have a lot of congestion on 300 East so these dual left turns will help alleviate that,” Cooley said.

Reconstructing Deer Ridge Drive in

SunCrest – “The pavement is in poor condition, so we’ll be reconstructing the pavement, improving the drainage system on the roadway, and also working on the water line prior to construction,” Hammond said.

The city’s public works department had great success trying a process called “full-depth reclamation” this past year, so they’ll plan to do more of that in the future. “It’s like rototilling a garden. We bring in heavy equipment and grind up the asphalt with the base material of the roadway, we add cement product to it, then we apply the asphalt to the base material that’s been hardened and it’s a great structure.

It provides a lot of strength and the process is so much faster than the typical reconstruction process, probably less than one quarter the time of doing it the standard construction way, and it’s about 30% less expensive,” Cooley said.

This process was done on 300 East from 11400 South to 11800 South and also in SunCrest on the roads in Oak Vista, immediately north of Deer Ridge Drive.

The order of the projects, the start dates and lengths of each project have yet to be determined. “These projects will be bid out, some are out now and some will go out soon, and the construction window can vary from spring to early fall,” Cooley said.l

City code on chickens is changing

raper’s history as “the egg basket of Utah” lives on in a new way, with chickens in residential zones gaining popularity, and the city working to update code accordingly.

For years, city code has allowed six chickens maximum per lot in residential zones, regardless of lot size. A call to councilmember Marsha Vawdrey set a “text amendment” (an update to city code) in motion. “I was contacted by a constituent who said they’d moved here, bought an acre, and realized they could only

have six chickens. She let me know that didn’t seem to make sense. As I looked into it, it was one size fits all and that doesn’t make sense to me, that you could have the same amount of chickens on 1/3 acre versus 1 acre. I thought that was something we needed to rectify. It makes sense to consider the lot size when you’re determining how many chickens you’ll allow,” Vawdrey said.

Vawdrey also spoke with a Draper IFA employee who confirmed that chickens and their mash have become very popular and the

store is busy trying to keep up with demand. “It appears that in the environment we’re in right now, some people were out of work, people were wanting to have some food production on their property, they wanted to be able to raise chickens and have eggs, and I thought that made sense. People are concerned when they realize they can’t go to the store and get everything they want,” Vawdrey said.

Alisha Jensen is the Draper resident who reached out to Vawdrey. She and her family moved to Draper five years ago from Sandy. “We specifically wanted land with animal rights in order to pursue a more self-sufficient lifestyle. We live on a one-acre lot, but I found out we are still only allowed six chickens under current zoning.” Jensen expressed her appreciation to Vawdrey, as well as Todd Draper who works in the city’s Planning Division, for their work toward an updated text amendment.

“I understand the city’s concerns that allowing too many chickens could result in some people possibly pursuing commercial gain and not just familial gain. My family is very happy at the new amendment, whether 20 or 25, it is a huge improvement on the previous six and will be a blessing to us,” Jensen said.

Draper resident Emily Dunn and her family have four chickens that they got for Easter three years ago as chicks. Dunn said each chicken lays about one egg per day. “We love

the eggs, and during COVID, we’ve tried to share them with our neighbors.” Her husband grew up on a farm with chickens, but this is her first experience raising them. “It’s been a really easy pet, plus other pets don’t give you eggs,” she said.

One part of the code that will likely remain the same is the no rooster rule. “I don’t think we’ll change that because that’s too hard on the neighbors. They do crow,” Vawdrey said.

The current proposal suggests a reduction to five chickens on smaller lots and an increase to a maximum of 20 or 25 on larger lots. At a January city council meeting, Draper said, “Best practice is 50 per acre, so if you already have a home on the property, reduce that number to account for setbacks for the coop.” Vawdrey explained that setback means the coop has to be a certain distance from the property line so as not to bother neighbors.

“I always think we need to protect the rights of property owners, and sometimes we can go too far and take away some rights that don’t need to be taken away. If you have an acre, you should be able to have more chickens than if you have a half acre, it just makes sense,” Vawdrey said.

The updated text amendment to change what is allowable by city code regarding “chickens for familial gain” is schedule to be voted on at the March 2 city council meeting.l

Discussions underway of possible new school boundaries

he development of Jordan Bluffs in Midvale is expected to shake things up a bit when it comes to drawing school boundaries.

Jordan Bluffs, bound by 7800 South on the north, Holden Street and Main Street on the east, the Midvale City boundary on the south and the Jordan River on the west, roughly has 40 students attending Canyons School District schools now, but is expected to house 150 to 175 school children by 2025, said Canyons’ Business Administrator Leon Wilcox.

Plus, nearby Bingham Junction is another redevelopment that will revitalize the older neighborhood and provide housing for families, bringing more children into schools, he said.

“This is so hard because we want to get as much community input as we can and it’s just so hard in this environment to have meetings in person,” he said about wanting patrons’ comments about the four Midvale elementary schools’ boundaries. “It certainly impacts some students. We’re trying to do as minimal as we can, but still need to accommodate growth with student enrollment with the current buildings’ capacities and with the necessary programming that we need to support all the students there so trying to balance that out is always the challenge.”

Boundary changes may go into effect in fall 2022 at the earliest, Wilcox said, but depending on COVID-19 impact, it may be pushed back to fall 2023.

Canyons is looking at several options that they will make public, including increasing enrollment at Midvalley, which can house about 800 students, to “take a little bit of pressure off, if we can, Copperview and a little bit of Midvale.”

Currently, elementary students living in Jordan Bluffs are in the boundary of Midvale Elementary so Wilcox said that they’re looking

to balance that school’s enrollment.

“We’re just trying to find the best solution for everyone,” he said.

Both Midvale and Midvalley elementaries are about 80% capacity in a non-COVID-19 year, Wilcox said.

“We want to try to get more students into Midvalley and maybe keep Midvale the same, but we know that more growth is going to come into that area with the Bluffs, too,” he said.

Copperview Elementary, which Wilcox said can serve a little more than 500 students, and East Midvale, which can serve closer to 600 students, are both “pretty full,” Wilcox said, so district officials also are looking into those schools’ boundaries to adjust student populations.

“These are Title I (schools) so one thing that comes into immediate impact is we want to make sure we can support the kids that are there and that weighs heavily in the calculation,” he said, adding that Midvale Elementary also is a Title I school. “Title I (schools), you have to have smaller class sizes, more supports and so you need more spaces and so even though you may have a 500 (student) building capacity, you don’t want to necessarily put 500 kids there because it may not be the best way to support them.”

Midvalley recently introduced a Spanish dual immersion program and that could also influence the number of students enrolled in its school.

Wilcox said currently they aren’t addressing busing right now, as they would like to keep students in their own neighborhoods, but he also said it wouldn’t be ruled out.

“I would say, nothing’s been off the table,” he said. “You’d like boundaries to go along State Street, it is a natural boundary like I-15 is, but you can’t always do that. So, you try your best to see what we can do, but the main thing

is always going to be to focus on how we can best support students. We put together a couple options and we’ve got a couple more that we’re looking at.”

Those potential options Wilcox shared at the Board of Education last fall. One option is that all of Jordan Bluff students will attend

Midvale Elementary, then shifting some current Midvale students to Copperview, and some Copperview students to Midvalley, and some East Midvale students to Midvale Elementary to balance enrollments. The second would split Jordan Bluffs between Midvale and Copperview elementaries, with additional shifting of students as in option one.

“We’ve gotten some positive feedback and we’ve gotten some negative feedback, but we’re wanting to hear from more people in the Midvale community,” he said.

Wilcox said that typically by holding open houses and focus groups, more options may emerge from those discussions, but without those in-person events, it’s harder to hear from people in the community. He has reached out to those elementaries’ PTAs and school community councils and schools’ staff and faculty.

There are discussions of holding virtual open houses or possibly sending out mailers to the community.

Under state law, once an option or multiple options are made public, 120 days needs to pass before Canyons Board of Education approves it. Canyons currently has not started that process, he said.

“In this environment, it is so hard to get any community feedback,” Wilcox said.

“We’re trying to bring in as many people as we can to make sure we get it right.” l

efore he entered high school, Juan Diego Catholic High School basketball player Talon Valdes set a goal to score 1,000 points during his four years on the Draper campus.

On Jan. 20 with a baseline jumper against Ogden, the senior netted that achieve=ment.

“I just remember feeling in that moment that all the hard work was paying off,” Valdes said. “I felt very blessed.”

“This is something I figured Talon would do as he’s started for us since his sophomore year,” head coach Drew Trost said. “I’ve been watching it all along the way and I’m so proud of him.”

The 6-foot point guard, who is called “a walking bucket because he can score at any point from anywhere he wants,” according to Trost, said he has always remembered his dad’s words in trying to build on his competitive drive and desire to get better. “My dad would always tell me that someone is working harder than you right now,” Valdes said. “So, I have to do whatever it takes to be quicker and get to my spots.”

Trost said that Valdes is always the fastest player on the floor which makes it tough for opponents to guard him, but as his coach he has a front row seat for the whole picture.

“God has definitely blessed Talon with a lot of talent, but what people don’t always see is how hard he works,” Trost said. “He is literally always the last to leave the gym.”

He currently leads the 20-2 Soaring Eagle team—who just wrapped up their seventh consecutive region title—in scoring with nearly 21 points a game as well as assists and steals and heads into the 4A state tournament as the No. 1 seed..

“In addition to being third on our all-time scoring list here, he’ll also probably finish with the most steals and top three in assists,” Trost said. “He’s just gotten better and better at getting his teammates involved. It’s great to see him lift his team to a higher level.”

The son of Ken Hopkins and Stacy Valdes of Riverton has been playing basketball since he was 4 years old and quickly embraced the sport where he “hates to lose.”

Coach Trost said he visited with Valdes when he was in the eighth grade at St. John the Baptist to discuss his future role in the JDCHS program. “I let him know that he would probably not get much varsity time his freshman year with the point guard we had, but that he would get pushed in practice and be ready to go the next season,” Trost said. “Instead of changing schools because he didn’t want to sit on the bench, he worked hard to get himself into a position to start every game since his sophomore year with the exception of a few games he was injured for.”

“If you really want something, you can’t just take the easy route and you need to be patient,” Valdes said.

As a sophomore, Valdes averaged 13 points for his team, “using his speed to get to

the rim,” according to Trost, who added that the All-Region First Teamer didn’t have a great shooting touch at that point.

By his junior season, he was putting in nearly 40% of his three-point attempts and his 20 points per game were recognized as he was named the Region Most Valuable Player.

“It’s been awesome to see Talon maximize his skills,” Trost said. “He’s such a joy to coach and to watch the huge impact on our program that he has had. In fact, with him as our starting point guard, our team has gone 52-11.”

Valdes said that a huge turning point for his self-confidence was Juan Diego’s firstround playoff game last season against Crimson Cliffs where the Mustangs were favored.

He scored a career-high 28 points and left the court knowing that “if we can beat them, we can beat anybody.”

The senior credits assistant coach Essliey Tan, a former JDCHS player, who has spent countless hours after practice in being able to play at a high level. “He has put in so much time with me to see me get better,” Valdes said. “I definitely wouldn’t be where I’m at with my game without him.”

Valdes has plenty of business left this year on the court as the Soaring Eagle squad is aiming for the 4A state title before he turns his attention to securing a spot on a college roster.

“It’s going to take all of us to be there to win state and have a good understanding of our roles and then going to execute,” Valdes said.

Trost said he has full confidence in his senior in leading this team to their big goals.

“It’s every coach’s dream to have your best player be your point guard and you certainly don’t have to work as hard as a coach to get

CCHS wrestlers win three state titles

C

orner Canyon High senior Kam Moss won his second consecutive state title at the 6A state wrestling championships Feb. 19 which were held in the Chargers home arena, this time in the 170-pound division.

Sophomore Tyler Vivanco also won in the 113-pound category while junior Brigham Bagley took home the crown at 126 pounds to help lead the Chargers to a sixth-place finish as a team.

“We are extremely proud of our team’s performance in the state tournament,” head coach Jeff Eure said. “Producing three state champions is a great accomplishment for our program as we continue to build tradition.”

Moss defeated Pleasant Grove’s Jake Closson and Lone Peak’s Kadin Stosich in the first two rounds before winning against Syracuse’s Zachary Phipps in the semifinals and then faced his “toughest match” with Skyridge’s Cayaen Smith in the 170-pound final where he won 4-1.

“It feels really good to have won again,” Moss said. “It was definitely a different year with things being canceled and the atmosphere at state was even different and then I felt like I had a target on my back this year because I had won before.”

Vivanco beat Skyridge’s Nikolas Jepperson and Westlake’s Trey Thompson before defeating teammate Gavin Gappmayer in the semifinals and then Pleasant Grove’s Jacob Carson to win the 6A title in the 113- pound division.

“It feels pretty good to have won,” Vivanco said. “Staying aggressive in every match and sticking with my game plan and my style of wrestling were what I really focused on and was able to do.”

Bagley defeated teammate Quinn Bedell in the first round and then Syracuse’s Sutton Brown before Bingham’s Banks Love in the semifinals and Herriman’s Gage Ogden in the final match at 126 pounds.

“Winning state is one of the best feelings ever, knowing that my dream has finally become a reality,” Bagley said. “I had to

just trust my training and make sure that I controlled the entire match and got ahead early.”

Gappmayer also took fourth in the 113-pound weight classification with Bradley Critchfield placing sixth in the 220-pound division.

Kam Moss, the son of Mike and Andrea Moss of Draper, took third at 132 pounds as a freshman and then sixth at 152 pounds while wrestling for Bingham High. Last year, he won the 160-pound division in his first season at Corner Canyon. This season, he overcame a back injury that made him miss most of the season, participating in just 13 matches before his final state appearance. The win brings the total number of state titles within his household to eight as two older brothers were also multiple state winners.

“They’ve put a lot of effort into working with me, especially Kade [who was a four-time state winner while at Bingham],” Moss said. “My coaches and training were also keys to me coming out on top.”

Vivanco, the son of Fernando and Jennifer Vivanco of Draper, has been wrestling since the third grade and became more serious about the sport when he started winning a few years ago.

Last year, at ninth-grade state he placed fourth in the 106-pound division.

“Wrestling has taught me that what you get is what you put in,” Vivanco said. “No one’s going to give you a trophy.”

Bagley, the son of Robert and Trisha Bagley of Draper started wrestling 10 years ago after his dad introduced him to the sport he had participated in.

“I’ve come to love it and the lessons that it teaches,” Bagley said and added that he has learned so much about commitment and hard work by competing on the mat.

“It’s taught me how going to practice every single day and working as hard as you can really pays off in the end and I feel like it really does prepare me for the future,” Bagley said.

The UHSAA aligned its schools for possibly the last time

he Utah High School Activities Association made its biannual changes to school region alignments. The adopted proposals have been applauded and scrutinized.

“Looks like Region 7 was picked by throwing darts on a map,” Derek Erickson, a concerned fan, commented after the alignment was announced.

According to the Utah High School Activities Association’s constitution, the Board of Trustees has the responsibility and authority to classify its member schools and assign them to regions within the classification. This year may be the last year of regions as we know it.

Considerations for alignment include fair competition, school enrollment, travel costs, and natural rivalries.

Region 7 has a 348-mile spread. Uintah High School in Vernal was placed in the 5A region with Cedar Valley, Cottonwood, Hillcrest, Payson, Stansbury, and Tooele high schools. Making it one of the most scrutinized region placement divisions.

“We can’t just look at the numbers of the school and say, ‘Hey, because you have 2,000 students you should play against other schools that have 2,000 students. We need to look at the balance,” Juab School

“We are absolutely excited for realignment,” Hillcrest Athletic Director Scott Carrell said. “We have regions and the RPI (rating performance index used to seed teams at state tournaments), they don’t work together very well. When they started to put together the changes we were put in a very competitive region in Utah County.

We sat down with our coaches and asked for that to be changed. We knew that in order for us to build our programs we needed to be put with similar schools. They told us we would have to travel more, but we were OK with that.”

The teams at Hillcrest realize there will be challenges.

“We know that not everyone will be on board, but we are excited to be able to build our programs back up,” Carrell said.

“We are looking at ways to have hotspots on buses to help with homework and more opportunities for distance learning.”

Many other schools were also enthusiastic about their new placement.

“We are excited about our new re-

gion,” Copper Hills Athletic Director Ben Morley said. “Mainly because of the proximity of the member schools and having West Jordan back in Region 3.”

West Jordan and Copper Hills have a natural rivalry again in Region 3 and are located just four miles from each other. They have played 25 football games against each other and Copper Hills has only won once, in 2013.

It is not the only rival to be preserved in the current alignment; Hunter and Granger, Kearns and Taylorsville in Region 2; Herriman, Riverton, and Mountain Ridge now all reside in Region 3; Bountiful, Viewmont, and Woods Cross in Region 5; Olympus and Skyline in Region 6; and Alta and Jordan in Region 8.

Roy administrators asked to be moved from Region 1, in northern Utah, to Region 2. They stated competitive balance as their reasoning. Roy last won a state championship in 2012 in softball. West High School won Region 2’s most recent title in 2019 in softball, but Granger has not been a state champion since 1979 in boys baseball.

In the upcoming season, Region 2 will consist of Cyprus, Granger, Hunter, Kearns, Taylorsville, West and Roy. “I like our region,” new Taylorsville

head football coach Chris Rosales said. “I just wish that winning a region championship meant more. With the new RPI, it has all changed.”

The UHSAA Region 3 will consist of Bingham, Copper Hills, Herriman, Mountain Ridge, Riverton and West Jordan.

Because of an increase in enrollment Mountain Ridge was moved from 5A to 6A in all sports.

Region 5 includes Bountiful, Woods Cross, Bonneville, Box Elder, Northridge, and Viewmont. Region 6 contains Brighton, East, Highland, Murray, Olympus, Skyline and Park City. Region 8 is comprised of two other Salt Lake County schools including Jordan and Alta.

“I think no regions in our alignment will be beneficial for every school in the state of Utah,” Carrell said. “Then games could be scheduled against teams of like opponents, more participation is the ultimate goal. It would not work for every sport, but we need to make goals to improve.”

UHSAA is exploring options for its realignment in two years. Some of those ideas could include the adoptions of no regions allowing teams to make schedules of their choosing. l

Former Royals player highlights online soccer training

rofessional soccer player Alex Kimball, who returned to her Salt Lake roots as a member of the Utah Royals, headlines a new six-week online training program that will begin March 15. Ultimate Virtual Soccer Training for Female Athletes is aimed at training young female soccer players, ages 13 to 17, in the skills and knowledge needed to improve their performance. The first week is being offered for free to give those interested a glimpse of the program.

“We are so excited for this program,” said Utah-based Sport Ready founder Robin Cecil, a physical therapist of 25 years. “To have a strategic advantage, one must train all aspects of the game and be available to train. This course provides a holistic approach that includes the soccer specific and physical aspects of training, along with other aspects, such as core values, and how behaviors affect an athlete’s performance.”

Kimball, who splits time living and training in the Salt Lake area and North Carolina where she played collegiately for the storied Tar Heels program, said she is excited to share her experiences with younger players. “We’re going to educate and help you train yourself in ways that you’ve never probably learned before,” she said. “I wish I knew then what I know now.”

Former BYU soccer player Alyssa Jefferson will be featured in a virtual six-week training program of world-class instruction for female soccer players, ages 13 to 17, that begins March 15.

Cecil said the program will give a comprehensive outlook and “some real takeaways” to educate youth athletes and empower them to know what to do to take care of their bodies.

“We’re not trying to take away from club soccer, just enhancing their knowledge base and overall experience to play the sport as long as they can and in the safest way possible,” she said.

Corner Canyon cheer is state’s best

T

he Corner Canyon High School cheer team successfully defended its 6A state championship Jan. 23 at Hillcrest High School, winning its fourth title in the eight years since the school has been opened.

“This year was extra special because it’s been such a hard year for everyone,” head coach Whitney Lunt said. “We had really tough competition at state this year so it was extra sweet to come out on top.”

Senior captain Madison Wankier said it was more difficult to defend this year due to competing against another nationally-ranked team in Bingham and other solid programs.

“We knew though that as long as we did our jobs there is nothing anyone could have done to stop us,” she said. “It was simple. All we needed to do was hit our routine and not worry about anyone else. In the end to see all the hard work from day one my freshman year to state my senior year was the best payday I have ever had. To come off the mat after having a perfect routine, I couldn’t help but cry and hug my team.”

Senior varsity competition captain Taylee Westra said it was rewarding to come out on top at state among the talent level that was there. “We knew that if we wanted to win, we had to work very hard in order to beat them,” she said. “Our focus for state was not to win; it was to hit. We wanted to perform the best we could and leave the mat with no regrets, and that is exactly what we did. We are so grateful that we were able to complete this season and defend our state title. Winning state really made all of our hard work pay off.”

The junior varsity squad lost five girls to quarantine just two days before the state meet and still won the 6A All Girl state championship. “They had to rework and change their entire routine the day before state so for them to be able to go out and hit a perfect routine at state and also win despite all of that was pretty incredible and amazing,” Lunt said.

“Region and state were the only competitions we competed live this year so to win at both was extra special,” Lunt said.

Wankier, Westra, Lily Baird, Lauren Adams and Emilie Mecham were recognized on the All-State team while Baird also received Academic All-State honors.

The varsity and JV squads have both gone undefeated so far throughout the virtual season, taking the World Class Cheer Virtual Series events in November and January, along with the UCA Mountain West Regional and the USA Regional in December.

Senior Lily Baird said the team dealt with longer and harder practices because of a late start to the season due to COVID. “It would have been easy to just give up, but I was impressed to see every single one of my teammates rise to the challenge and push even harder,” she said. “Our coach Cameron told us seniors at the beginning of the year that we needed to be loyal to Corner Canyon cheer.

That stuck with us throughout the season and helped us remain persistent. It was hard not having a normal season and a lot of unexpected things continued to happen through the year, but our team easily adapted and kept a

positive attitude.”

Also on the CCHS varsity squad were Avery Adamson, Brooke Barney, Lizzie Boyle, Lauren Easton, Jessica Flores, Annabelle Harris, Zoe Kener, Brooklynne Nelson, Ella Nelson, Bethany Rooklidge, Olivia Sharp, Jade Winkel, Danika Wood and Kylie Wood.

The junior varsity team included Bailey Davis, Ella Duffin, Eloise Fletcher, Shannon Gillespie, Kiki Howard, Addy Jones, Abbie Keys, Ellie Keys, Kim Liljenquist, Ashley Macjevic, Jaylee Misner, Paige Rees, Christine Schmidt, Kennedy Scott, Macy Watts and Ellee Wilder.

Wankier said that this season looked extremely different than in years past with the off-season workouts and practices. “We learned the cheers this year off videos and had to video ourselves to pass off our tasks for the week as well as tumble and run to make sure we kept in shape,” she said. “Though COVID tried to mess with the season nonstop, we have been able to keep using every second we can to work on simple things like jumps and tumbling and cleaning up our routine which in the end helped us to be able to come out on top.

So, thank you COVID!” “Despite all of the challenges, it has been a pretty special season so far,” Lunt said. “And the love from our parents, school and community was overwhelming.”

The Chargers have a few more competitions this spring as tune-ups before the National High School Cheerleading Championships which are scheduled for late April.

At the school, they will host a Pre-Nationals Showcase March 20. Open gyms for tryouts for next season will be May 11 and 13 with the tryouts going from May 17 through 21.l

Alta basketball standout Brinlee McRae ranks second in Utah for points per game

T

he Alta women’s basketball team is up and running after a two-week break due to three positive COVID-19 tests within the organization. Going two weeks without basketball practice turned out to be more difficult than the team expected. Although the girls missed playing basketball, they were more excited just to see each other again.

“We get back to campus and I’m hearing all these laughs and giggles in the team room, it has never been this loud,” said head coach Elizabeth Gustafson.

This season has shown them how much it means just to be able to connect with teammates, because they never know when the pandemic will keep them on the sidelines.

“Everyone has bought in and is just trying to do what they need to. They understand that all these experiences can be taken away,” Gustafson said.

After the two-week hiatus, the Lady Hawks are glad to be together to work on their most important team goal—finding joy.

“We are just trying to have a lot of fun this season. That’s what we came into it to do,” said junior Brinlee McRae. With their lighthearted approach to the season, the Lady Hawks don’t get too caught up in the stats. An emphasis on team unity has proved to be more important.

“I feel like we’re doing better than last season. I think our record is better,” said McRae before asking Gustafson, “Is it?”

“I don’t know the record either. We don’t celebrate that kind of stuff, we try to just recognize the hustle,” Gustafson replied.

In fact, coach Gustafson hadn’t even known that McRae is currently ranked second in the state in points per game. Even though it was news to her, she was not at all surprised.

McRae, a Sandy native, made the decision to attend Hillcrest High her freshman year to participate in the rigorous academic opportunities provided there. After a year, she

returned to Alta, wanting to see familiar faces.

“Her life, her friends, her community— it’s here,” Gustafson said.

After her transfer, McRae was cleared to play in sub-varsity competition. After a sophomore season spent dominating in JV games, McRae exploded onto the high school scene this year.

“That’s why right now as a junior everyone is so shocked. No one knew she even existed, but she was putting up those same stats last year in JV. She’s always been this competitive,” Gustafson said.

McRae admits that having to sit out in those varsity games was tough, but she learned patience. She was able to create bonds with her JV teammates that have translated to a well-rounded 2020-21 team.

“It was so frustrating. Having to sit there knowing what I could do, just wanting to be in there, but I grew so much as a player,” McRae said.

After a unique start to her high school basketball career, McRae is finally able to show everyone what she is capable of.

McRae’s current points per game of 22.5 is second only to Judge Memorial standout Teya Sidberry.

McRae is still getting used to this spotlight. Being a state leader in a points per game stat can take emphasis away from team play and incentivize players to take the ball to the basket every time.

“I put a little more pressure on myself.

Every game, I want to get to that average. I don’t want to come out until I hit that, but I try not to focus on it too much,” McRae said.

At the end of the day, McRae tries to zone in on her two goals: have fun and work hard.

The two-week hiatus provided a reminder to enjoy the process and not get too caught up in statistics and state leader boards.

“It’s just numbers,” McRae said. “You just got to play for the team.” l

Like a mother in a Disney movie, my cell phone died inexplicably. Well, not inexplicably. I dropped it in the toilet.

I was wearing jeans for the first time in seven months and had the phone in my back pocket when it promptly fell into the commode. My phone, not my back pocket.

There’s a universal response when you drop your phone in liquid; you reach in and grab the damn thing. It could be submerged in molten lava or boiling oil; you will instinctively reach for the phone at the expense of ever using your hand again.

Snatching it up, I screamed several unprintable words and resorted to 15 minutes of “No, no, no, no, no!” I shook my phone, blew in it, prayed over it and dashed home to dump it in a bowl of rice. (A robot on Mars can send information to NASA but I have to submerge my phone in rice because it got wet.)

I thought, this would make a great Instagram post and frantically looked for my phone so I could take a picture of my phone sitting in a bowl of rice.

But I was phoneless. I reached for my phone nonstop. I absently grabbed the TV remote, trying to scroll through Tik Tok. I picked up my computer mouse to check the time. I kept patting my leggings where my cell phone used to be, frisking myself like some weird felon.

arch 23 is National Puppy Day. Established in 2006, the holiday was designated to celebrate dogs and advocate for pet adoption. There is much to celebrate this year. During the pandemic, the number of pets adopted from rescue shelters has soared. According to the Shelter Animals Count, which tracks activity in 500 animal shelters across the US, 26,000 more pets were adopted in 2020, an increase of 15%.

While it is wonderful that so many pets have found their forever homes, the fact remains that puppies—and older dogs for that matter—do not come with instruction manuals. New pet owners need to work with their dogs to socialize them and instill good behaviors. K9 Lifeline in Draper helps dog owners to care for, train and socialize dogs of all ages, sizes and temperaments.

For 20 years, K9 Lifeline has offered dog training, daycare, grooming, boarding and sometimes adoption services to the community. The business has been in its current Draper location for 11 years.

K9 Lifeline owner and founder, Heather Beck, summed up her philosophy of dog training. “It’s not just about ‘sit’ and ‘stay,’” she said. “It’s about relationships. Every interaction you have with a dog is training. Dogs are like children, they absorb everything.”

Beck has been working with dogs for decades. A Midwesterner, she came to Utah in 1995 as a competitive mogul skier.
