“W

e, Not Me” was Juan Diego Catholic High School baseball team’s motto this year.

And that theme carried the Soaring Eagle squad all the way to the 3A state title—a championship they won with a win over American Leadership Academy 8-1 at UCCU Ballpark at Utah Valley University May 14.

“It took a while for the kids to buy-in and really understand what that meant, but they kept working and trusting in each other until it was truly ‘We, Not Me’ by the end,” said head coach Taylor Berg, who just finished his third year heading up the program.

Berg is a JDCHS alum who was an All-State player for the 2009 state championship team.

“A lot of the emotions are the same, but the difference for me was truly sharing it with the entire program,” he said. “As a player, you share it with teammates and coaches and family primarily, but as the coach I know how many people are involved and support our program.

It feels even better to share it with the entire JD family, including all the alumni and former coaches who mentored me.”

In the title game, senior pitcher Sam Silversmith struck out 11 Eagles players, while allowing just three hits, in a complete game effort to win the game on the mound. His four consecutive strikeouts in the early going proved key as Juan Diego put up five runs and the team gained momentum. Sophomore Andrew Lombana, who bats ninth for Juan Diego, hit a home run and a triple in driving in three runs with a four-for-four plate appearance to lead the offense.

$50 for a single cupcake? Yes, when it goes to a good cause

W

endy Williams wanted to help the people of Ukraine, but she wasn’t sure how. And she knew she wasn’t alone in feeling that way.

“I could see that a lot of people really wanted to help. They just seemed at a loss on what to do, where to do it and how. People seemed to be a little frustrated. The majority of people are so kind and so sad over everything,” said Williams, a retiree who moved to Draper in recent years.

Inspired by her pastor, Nate Taylor of Corner Canyon Church, she came up with the idea of a church bake sale. “He makes you want to do things. He’s amazing and he’s so supportive of the needs of the people,” Williams said. She approached Taylor with her idea and he enthusiastically agreed.

Taylor said the people of Ukraine had been “on his prayer radar,” but he hadn’t planned a logistical way to help. “It’s really just such a sad situation,” he said of the war.

Williams set about enlisting other volunteers. They decided on a suggested donation bake sale with no set pricing, and they would welcome any donations, big or small.

She worried that if no one came, they might feel the need to suggest $50 per cupcake in hopes of raising enough funds.

Williams personally baked 10 pumpkin pies, five cheesecakes and more than 400 cookies. All kinds of goodies rolled in from other church members and volunteers, including bread pudding made by the pastor’s mother-in-law who happened to be visiting from out of town.

The volunteers erected a big tent on the church grounds on 12883 S. 1300 East and decorated with blue and yellow, the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Williams learned the blue represents the sky and the yellow represents wheat of which Ukraine is a big producer.

The day of the bake sale, April 23, brought wind, rain, snow and some sunshine.

But inclement weather didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits because it was all for a good cause.

“Everybody there had a good time and it was important for people to be able to do this,” Williams said. “People were so generous, some of them did pay $50 for a cupcake!”

Mrs. Utah America, Amanda Brady of Herriman, attended and helped with the fundraiser by spreading the word on social media. “My platform for the pageant is ‘Be The Good.’ It’s about how people can show up in small and simple ways to help their community. When I heard about Wendy’s bake sale, I knew just by showing up, that would support her. That’s what we learn to do for one another is just show up. I wanted to make sure the message she was putting out there was shared,” Brady said.

In the process of putting on the event, Williams learned of a woman of Ukrainian descent who lives with her American husband in Utah. The couple attend both Corner Canyon Church and the Slavic Evangelical Baptist Church in Holladay. That was just the connection Williams needed to make sure the donations would go to help the refugees of Ukraine as she and everyone involved intended. “That was a godsend because we were concerned about where to take these people’s hard-earned money,” Williams said.

Less than three weeks after the fundraiser, Williams and Taylor drove to Holladay to deliver a check for $2,253.25 to Pastor Andrey Benkovskiy and his cousin, Deacon Alex Benkovskiy, at their church.

“We were really glad and thankful for everybody to remember what’s happened in Ukraine. Our reaction is ‘Wow, this is great!’

We will send the funds to Ukrainian people who need it. We usually work with pastors in Ukraine. We will send it to people we trust,” Andrey said.

The Benkovskiys said their church has been in Utah for 30 years, the last 17 in the Holladay building. Services are in Russian with translation into English offered by a church member. Andrey’s father is Ukrainian and his mother is Russian. “In our church, we help people from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus. We pray for a stop to the war, we pray for peace,” he said. According to Andrey, the Holladay church is currently helping two young Ukrainian refugee families who’ve come to Salt Lake. Alex said their church has already sent donations to people in Ukraine a few times since the war began.

Most of the people that came to buy goodies and donate were saying they just didn’t know how to help and they thanked me for doing this. That was the answer for me. I wanted people to have a vessel to do this and I want to make it grow.” l

To begin the state tournament, the seventh-seeded squad beat Richfield 19-9 May 7, opening up a close game late with eight runs in the final inning. Later that day, they got into a shootout with No. 2 Canyon View giving up 16 runs in the fifth inning and having to come back late to win 22-21.

In the quarterfinals May 12, JDCHS defeated No. 3 ALA 8-4, breaking a 3-3 tie after three innings to take control of the game. Facing fourth-ranked Carbon in the semifinals May 13, the Soaring Eagle squad won 14-6, scoring 10 runs in the middle innings— including a three-run homer by Lombana—to beat the Dinos and reach the championship game.

“We never really paid much attention to the seeding or who was ranked where. We believed in what we were doing and how good of a club we could be if we trusted each other and played for something bigger,” Berg said. “Our tough schedule all year helped us build confidence that we could play with anybody when we played our brand of JD baseball.”

Berg noted his six “incredible” seniors—Silversmith, Gabe Perkins, Cole Jackson, Tyler Easter, Dallas Larson and Patrick Swanson—who played a huge role in the team bringing a seventh baseball championship to their Draper campus.

“This was a very special group and without the leadership of these seniors, we would not have had the same finish that we did,” Berg said.

Also on the 2022 squad were juniors Uzi Alvarez, Carlos Calata, Malik Harris and Wyatt Reid; sophomores Jordan Calata, Zach Carlson, Caden Fenger, Kayson Larson, Daniel Nunez, Matthew Odell and Logan Shelton; and freshmen Antonio Archuleta, Gavin Brady, Eamonn Dolan, Manik Gill-Martin, Wyatt Hanna, Castle Huggard, Hayden Mezenen, Alex Modtland, Jacob Odell and Dean Siegel.

“Our team chemistry played a crucial part in the playoff run,” Berg said. “They truly cared for each other and wanted success for one another, and I believe that showed in how we played.”

Berg was assisted by Kendall Hanson, Brock Garn, Danny Larson and Zac Petereit on the coaching staff along with Izzy Bonacci and Olivia Harbison who handled team media.

“Our team parents, assistant coaches, team managers and everyone played a part in this championship run and we are fortunate to have such a great community at Juan Diego,” Berg said. l

Newcomers learn about movie history, filmmaking through Canyons Film Festival submissions

F

or the past 10 years, Jordan Valley teacher Glenda Folkersen thought it would be fun to make a short film with her students, but the idea was always put on pause.

This year, while teaching her students about the 2021 opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, Folkersen decided to hit record as her students brought the history of filmmaking to life.

Fast forward to April 28 as one of her students, Nathan Curtis, representing himself and his 10 classmates, was able to roll down the red carpet to claim the golden film canister as winners at the Canyons Film Festival. It was the first film Jordan Valley has entered in the 12-year contest.

“Every year when the film festival rolls around, I’m always saying, ‘Why doesn’t Jordan Valley participate in this?’

I’ve always thought it would be fun to make a short film with my students and enter it,” Folkersen said, who bounced around making a film with her student teacher Cora Bentley, who also liked the idea. “Without even stopping, I went to my back closet and pulled out a bin of hats and decided to let the kids choose which hat they liked and then we created the storyline.”

Folkersen followed where her students’ eyes looked as a way of selecting their hats.

“With their disabilities, some of them have their own form of communication.

They will gaze if they want something or if I’m holding up a squid hat versus a sombrero, they’ll gaze to say yes at the one they want,” she said about students at the school who have severe multiple disabilities and can be extremely medically fragile.

Part of the goal at Jordan Valley School is to improve the quality of life for students, age five to 22, and their families and Folkersen saw this as an opportunity her students could participate in, similarly to mainstream students.

As the project unfolded, Jordan Valley achievement coach Brett Taylor stepped up to help with the filming and even arranged for Canyons School District to paint his office wall green as a form of a green screen for the students in the film.

“We would dress our kids up, take them into the green room and if they had a speaking part, we would record it onto a switch device, so the kids could activate the switch to say their lines,” Folkersen said, adding that when one student was studying from home, Folkersen even went to her house to record her to ensure she was part of the film.

The opening scene has Miles Askvig dressed as a construction worker as he fits in with other workers to build the museum. Then, the movie history tour begins with Stephanie Moreno-Cervantes as a silent movie star. Abby Wilburn emerged in the first color movie as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” followed by Curtis as Mr. (Fred) Rogers in “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” Next, students explore documentary films as Ahmed Hmeida and Sam Willardsen, wearing squid hats, discover the underwater world. From there, the students’ movie moves into animation films starring Jade Stephens dressed as Jessie and Caleb Kirk appearing as Andy in “Toy Story,” and Emily Jensen wearing Elsa’s hairstyle in “Frozen.”

All the students were part of the “Ghostbusters” scene before Willardsen, joined by Monique Lopez and Connor Bruce, wearing sombreros highlighted the movie, “Coco.” The Jordan Valley studios’ film ends with fireworks.

During the process, Folkersen said it created happy memories for her students.

“We had so many smiles and fun while doing this. Nathan loves Mr. Rogers and one of my favorite experiences with this whole production was getting him in a sweater and tie to play the part of Mr. Rogers. When I turned him around in front of a full-length mirror, he laughed so hard.

It was the most joyous memory because he was so proud of himself and happy to play the part of Mr. Rogers in our production,” she said.

It ended up being more than just a movie as a class project.

“We thought this would be a great short movie for families to get out and watch with popcorn and just really enjoy, but we had so much more. We had so much attention and clapping from the audience.

Yes, we have students with disabilities, and it was our first time we’ve participated, but so many people came up and said how meaningful the movie was for them and how their own kids can’t watch it without smiling,” she said. “That’s what these kids do, they just make you happy.”

There were other first-time entries, like Hillcrest High’s Jayashabari Shankar, who won the high school public service announcement category with “Buy Local, Think Global.”

“I went out shopping and saw signs to buy locally produced items and that really sparked my interest so I did some research on that and thought it would be a really

cool idea to do that for a film,” she said.

“I’ve always been interested in writing and artistically spreading a message. I decided this would be a new challenge, especially after the last two years when so many things were virtual or canceled so I wanted to give it a try. I’ve never done a video in this format before, so I’ve learned about filmmaking. I liked the fast-paced tone of the PSA; it’s catchy and I could add music so people would remember it. It’s really been a good learning experience.”

They marked just some of the winners of the 600 students and faculty who submitted films this year. It was the largest in the film festival’s history, which marked the return of the event after a one-year absence because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, the ceremony was held virtually.

Summer road work is starting and restrictions for trucks onTraverse will soon take effect

T

oo many accidents, including one fatality last fall, and numerous near-misses are prompting the city to put restrictions in place for trucks using Traverse Ridge Road. Several summer road projects will soon start around the city as will work by Google Fiber. Brake maintenance is strongly suggested for anyone who frequently drives down from SunCrest where speed limit enforcement is focused on, and drivers are asked to slow down and practice patience.

“If we don’t do something, there’s going to be another fatality on this road,” said Scott Cooley, Draper’s Public Works director/city engineer, about Traverse Ridge Road.

Cooley addressed the council in early March about complaints of speeding as well as accidents on Traverse Ridge Road. He said the city conducted several studies in the past six months to come up with recommendations, this after he confirmed there have been 11 accidents on that road in the past decade, three resulting in death.

“We’re really negligent if we don’t do something,” said Councilmember Fred Lowry.

Cooley clarified that the issues of speed and accidents on Traverse are separate. To address speeding, police have amped up enforcement. Restrictions are not yet in place for trucks, but they will be soon after the council approves code change. “The restriction will be for truck traffic with three axles or more, so any trucks that are two axles are fine. We’re going to eliminate that truck traffic in the downhill direction from the intersection of SunCrest Drive and Traverse Ridge Road all the way down to Mike Weir Drive. The hill has a 10% grade and those trucks in particular struggle to keep their speed low enough so their brakes don’t fail by overheating. Most of the accidents have happened below Mike Weir Drive, but the brake failures happen because of the steep grade above that.”

Trucks with three axles or more can continue to go uphill on Traverse Ridge Road, but they’ll have to go downhill from SunCrest on the Lehi side. “That road isn’t as steep,” Cooley said.

According to Cooley, in the past two years, two trucks have had to intentionally crash to avoid hitting someone else on that segment of road, and the death of a woman last fall on the Bangerter Extension was a result of a truck that lost its brakes. He noted that passenger vehicles have also lost their brakes on that road, but the deaths have been a result of crashes involving trucks with three axles or more.

Though the restrictions are being placed on bigger trucks, city officials would encourage residents who frequently drive down Traverse from SunCrest or South Mountain to keep up on their car maintenance. “I’d like to bring awareness that there have been passenger vehicle crashes that have been caused by brake failure. For anyone who travels that road on a regular basis, it would be a good idea to

He couldn’t definitely say if the state no longer requiring both Safety and Emissions testing (only emissions testing is required in recent years) has or hasn’t compounded the problem of drivers being unaware their brakes aren’t working properly.

Where city road projects are concerned, there aren’t as many planned this summer as in years past. Still, several will be happening throughout the summer into fall. “This year isn’t going to be as impactful as some in the past, depending on where you live,” said Cooley.

The biggest project will be the widening of 1300 East from Nashi Lane to Highland Drive. The road has been widened north of that, so it’s a continuation. But because this is a federally funded project controlled by UDOT, it’s possible it may be postponed until next spring.

The plan is for two new signals, one at the intersection of 13800 South/Wayne’s World and 1300 East, the other at the intersection of 1300 East and Highland Drive. “That area is going to become much more efficient with high-T intersections that allow for free travel in the top part of the T without restrictions of having to stop with signals unless a pedestrian is there,” Cooley said.

Deer Ridge Drive in SunCrest is slated for reconstruction and the water transmission line is being replaced. Residents can anticipate temporary signals during water line construction, but there will likely be flaggers when road construction is underway. Cooley anticipates completion this summer, October at the latest.

by Harmon’s Bangerter location is set to begin in July. And Southfork Drive from Bangerter to Minuteman will also be reconstructed.

The roundabout on Pioneer Road and 1300 East, originally slated to be reconstructed last summer, won’t happen until spring 2023.

“The design has been completed and some utility relocation has been done in preparation, but because of cost and limiting closure… we wanted to ensure we had the right plan in place to minimize the time we have closures in place,” Cooley said.

Todd Hammond, senior engineering manager for Draper Public Works Department, explained that the design will change that roundabout to two northbound and two southbound lanes. The east and west legs will be widened to provide one through lane and one right-turnonly lane entering the roundabout. The project also includes enhanced street lighting and flashing signs for each of the three crosswalks.

Google Fiber will be starting their work around the city. “They’re going to take the city in parts at a time. They aren’t all over the city randomly, we keep those in check. That’s probably going to go on for a year and a half to two years,” Cooley said. l

Area high school students honored with Aspirations in Computing awards

M

urray High School senior Mary Seeley knows a thing or two about science and technology.

She has been part of a five-time first-place underwater robotics team; learned about making computer chips, coding, circuits, wiring, ethics, personal privacy and other aspects of cybersecurity at Brigham Young University camps; competed with VEX robotics and Science Olympiad on her high school team; been involved with Murray High’s tech club; was named Murray High’s Sterling Scholar in computer technology; served as a SheTech statewide student board member; started a SheTech club at her school; and has interned with both SheTech and Murray School District’s CyberCorp.

The 4.0 soon-to-be Spartan graduate recently was honored as a state award winner of National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing. She was one of 60 area high school students honored at the April 30 ceremony held at the University of Utah.

“This award highlights all of my activities that I’ve done in tech, in STEM and computing,” said Seeley, who plans to attend BYU in the fall to study for a possible career in software development. “It showcases all the hard work I’ve put into it. It means a lot as I really enjoy the opportunities tech has given me and those opportunities have opened up a lot more. This year, and last year, there were some amazing women who spoke (at the ceremony) and really inspired me.”

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors ninth- through 12th-grade students for their com-

puting-related achievements and interests, and encourages them to pursue their passions. Award recipients are selected based on their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for post-secondary education.

Sorenson Forensics expands operations and brings world-class DNA analysts to Draper

B

one testing for missing person cases, giving expert testimony, generating DNA profiles—it’s just another day at Sorenson Forensics in Draper. The business just announced a $3.4-million investment that will expand its forensics operations to make room for trailblazing instrumentations.

“Sorenson Forensics has been rooted in Utah for over 16 years,” said Kent Harman, CEO of Sorenson Forensics. “We stand tall with a unified vision, renewed in our passion for excellence and an unparalleled dedication to the highest level of quality.”

In 2021, the business moved from South Salt Lake and opened a new laboratory in Draper at 11978 S. 700 East, providing efficiency tailored to the work being done. The investment included a bone pulverizer which is used to streamline DNA extraction from decades-old cold cases.

Although it's a private lab, Sorenson Forensics analysts often work with the Utah Attorney General’s Office, the FBI, and other law enforcement agencies from around the country. They provide DNA results that can exonerate or condemn a suspect. In a pro bono case, analysts helped free a man wrongly convicted of sexual assault.

“We’ve had a couple of exciting exonerations from people who were serving 40 years to life,” Harman said. “We went back over old evidence, re-analyzed the DNA and exonerated the sexual assault suspect. Not only that, but we uploaded the info to [the Combined DNA Index System] and got a match to the perpetrator.”

Experts at Sorenson Forensics analyze any type of DNA with precision. They swab bullet casings to identify drive-by shooters. A spot of blood on the wristwatch of a suspect was swabbed and matched to the missing person that law enforce-

ment was searching for. Results were sent to the local agency which got a confession from the suspect.

“This testing eliminates suspects and allows them to move on to another person of interest. Not so much time wasted with the wrong person,” Harman said.

To attract talented analysts from across the country, Harman said the new lab had to be ultramodern. The location in Draper is a bonus as recruits see the recreation and lifestyle available in the area.

Harman is a Draper resident and retired military. His wife, Jami, is an FBI-trained DNA analyst. Together they started a forensics lab in Missouri in 1998 which, at the time, opened with the most sophisticated equipment. Their company merged with Sorenson Forensics in 2018, and Harman took over as CEO. “We’re a neutral lab. We’re just about the science. We’re only going to state the facts, not shade the results,” he said.

Audited by the FBI annually, Sorenson Forensics currently has 25 FBI-qualified analysts and hopes to add three more this summer. Each analyst can independently run cases, take samples, finalize reports and provide expert testimony. For more information, visit SorensonForensics.com.

The facility has successfully completed more than 100,000 backlog cases, ranging from property crimes, homicides, sexual assaults and other violent offenses. With instruments and testing equipment improving all the time, Harman expects big changes in the industry.

“Technology right now is on some very fixed equipment,” he said. “Most DNA testing is performed in a brick-and-mortar lab. Over the next 10 years, I see things getting moved down to local agencies. There will be crime scene vans with rapid CNA equipment on board to get faster results.” l

St. John fifth-grade students’ heroes come alive

I

t may not ever happen again. Two women who made a stand for females standing near each other at the same place and the same time.

But that’s what happened as First Lady Abigail Adams stood near aviator Amelia Earhart one spring day at St. John the Baptist Elementary.

Actually, it was two fifth-graders, Ashlyn Trost and Ansley Sewall, portraying the heroines as part of the school’s wax museum that featured Jim Henson, Katie Ledecky, John Deere, Julia Grant, Ulysses S. Grant, Kamala Harris, John Glenn, Jonas Salk, Stan Lee and Jill Biden among the 100 or so famous folk who filled the multi-purpose room.

Ashlyn said she chose Abigail Adams as her famous American.

“I wanted to choose a person who felt strongly about women’s rights and education,” she said. “She was educated herself and educated her daughters at home at a time when school wasn’t an option for girls. It also was a time when women didn’t have jobs, but she ran the family farm for years while her husband was away and raised the family. And she didn’t lose sight of women. She wrote to her husband when he was away to remember the ladies more than their ancestors did.”

Nearby, Ansley portrayed Amelia Earhart.

“I love mysteries, so I wanted to research and learn more about her life since it ended in a mystery when she disappeared in her around-the-world flight,” she said. “Amelia was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic and Pacific. She wanted to do things that were typically only for men, so she was pushing boundaries back then. She had a lot of courage and wrote a

Many students brought in costumes from hoop skirts to an astronaut’s helmet. Others created costumes that were transformed from their grandparents’ closets or wore costumes from students in previous years.

Principal Nikki Ward said the “wax museum costumes are fabulous. Students love learning about their heroes. It’s an annual fifth-grade tradition that’s been around for at least 10 years.”

She looks forward to seeing some favorites.

“The tallest in the class is always Abe Lincoln and we always have an FDR in the wheelchair,” she said, adding that this is the first time she remembers seeing lawman Wyatt Earp, but scientist Albert Einstein hasn’t missed a year – except when it wasn’t held because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is actually the first time parents have come in since March 2020. We’ve had lots of smiles,” she said.

During the wax museum, fifth-grade teacher Marilyn Miller said there were expectations.

“We have a rubric for the wax museum that includes their speech, the clarity of their voice, their stance,” she said.

“Younger students come and listen to the presentations and fill out an info sheet. They’re excited because they know they’re coming down the line and will be able to do this in fifth grade.”

Not only did students have to clearly recite facts and history of their heroes while in costume, but they also researched and wrote a paper and made a poster. Fifth-grade teacher Janet Tetzloff said students had several weeks to prepare.

“We asked they have at least six achievements, tie in two events that happened in their lifetime, include a famous quote

and ‘an attitude of gratitude’ or what contributions the person has made to our society,” she said. “If they have someone who isn’t on the list, they check with us, but we continue to update it. Our ‘hero’ list has doubled since we began.”

While Miller acknowledges it is a fun event, students are learning and practicing their reading, writing, speaking and research skills.

“We touch on primary and secondary sources, work on how to make an outline and teach proofreading skills. Our librarian taught them how to use hooks such as using stories, quotes, imaginations to interest people in their life stories,” she said. “It’s an opportunity that gets students excited about learning and sharing it with others.” l

St. John Science Olympiad team places in top 10 at state

ore than 200 miles south of their school campus, five St. John the Baptist Middle School students competed against other middle-schoolers to place in the top 10 teams in the state Science Olympiad. It was the only contest the team competed in under first-year coach Felixcia Blanchard.

“We competed because I had a student persistently ask if we could compete in Science Olympiad,” she said, so they formed a team. “I think it’s great kids really enjoy, so they want to have fun afterschool and do bunch of science experiments.”

At the April 9 state contest held at Southern Utah University, sixth-grader Mack Kesler placed second in solar power; ninth-grader Kayla Workman placed third in ornithology; seventh-graders Becket and Violette-Reine Evans placed seventh in crime busters; and eighth-grader Jaeden Pena took eighth in food science.

Science Olympiad is designed for students to learn how to apply scientific, engineering and math principles while using creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

Students engage in hands-on learning experiences while gaining leadership and teamwork skills and exploring possible science and engineering careers.

St. John competed in tournaments regionally in 2020, only to have state canceled that spring with the safety and health protocols surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team didn’t compete in 2021.

Blanchard allowed students to pick their contests based on their interest.

“Initially they were going to compete in more, but as it came closer to state, they eliminated events that they weren’t su-

per prepared for and focused more on one event,” she said. “It was the first year most of our students competed.”

Students worked after school three days per week preparing.

They could do any experiments, read up on things, make study guides, do what they needed to,” said the second-year St. John teacher who instructs physics and marine science. “They helped each other out and had a good time. It’s all their enthusiasm and passion for the discipline. As a science teacher, I welcome them to use my classroom and anything they need here.”

For example, students had to prepare kits for all the events except solar power.

That contest required students to heat up water using solar power.

“He (Mack) had to build his own solar-powered device and make a beaker of water heat up. With his understanding of thermal energy, he built a solar oven he layered with foil and mirrors,” she said.

Some competitions allowed a sheet of notes to be brought in. For example, crime busters and food service were allowed to take a series of chemistry related materials.

However, ornithology didn’t require equipment because Kayla “had to identify taxidermied birds.”

“Science Olympiad had students research subjects they were interested in, and it empowered their own learning,” she said.

“The best part was building bonds and relationships with the students and seeing them build relationships with each other because normally they may not be friends since they’re in different grade levels.” l

Corner Canyon High forensics team takes third at state, sends individuals to nationals

That’s what a couple Corner Canyon High speech and debate students have their minds on now that school is over.

Freshman Grace Norton, junior Ronan Spencer and senior Max Napieralski have all earned qualifying invitations to compete at the National Speech and Debate national competition on June 12-17, in Louisville, Kentucky.

This was on top of Draper High School snatching third place in 6A state and repeating as their region champions.

“We went from four to 17 kids last year to 40 kids this year,” said Jeramy Acker, who last year became their adviser even though his coaching experience has been with sports. “I don’t have any experience with speech and debate. Zero. None. But I know coaching.”

Acker began by asking students,“What do you want to achieve?”

“I told them, ‘I don’t want to push you to be a state champion if you don’t want to be a state champion,’” he said. “I want to make sure they’re not aspirations I have for them, but that they have for themselves.”

With a goal of winning region, he instituted “afterschool labs and various components to structurally support them” as well as invited successful college debate students to help students meet their aspirations.

This year, when he repeated the question, he was told they wanted to repeat as champions and be in the top five in state.

“When they took third, they were ecstatic, because they were not just in top five, but in top three,” he said. “One of the things I like about speech and debate is what you put into it, you get out of it. After they got third, they said they wanted to win the state championship. I told them, ‘If you want to win, that starts right now, not in the fall.’ So, we’re already doing all the necessary planning right now to look at what we can do over the summer. We can definitely achieve the goal that the students have right now for next year.”

The team competes from October through March, both in-person and virtually. Each quarter, students compete in at least two tournaments.

One of the national qualifiers, Spencer, who is competing in student congress at nationals, set the team record with 638 points for the season.

“We’ve never had anyone that’s competed in as many events or at as many tournaments as Ronan did,” Acker said about the state silver medalist.

Napieralski recently got invited in his first year competing in speech to nationals. At press time, it was undecided if he would compete.

“It’s super cool for Max,” Acker said.

“We really have highly academic students here at Corner Canyon. There’s a lot of college opportunities and scholarships in speech and debate and it’s almost in line with every AP or honors class with putting in extensive research, building cases, writing original speeches and practicing.”

Norton qualified in extemporaneous speaking. Her older brother, John, also competed in the same event, earning second place at state this year. He competed last year at nationals.

“John spent a lot of time actually coaching these kids as a student mentor,” Acker said, adding that team captain and senior Anna Page also advised students.

At state, junior Arden Edwards took second in impromptu, sophomores Henry Atkin and Alyssa Miller earned third in policy debate, and sophomores Katie Brown and Abby Holland are first alternates in policy debate.

“I think it was a big moment for our kids because some had never been to a state championship team. We’re young, but that plays in our favor for next year. We can continue to grow our team, build up the skills on the kids we have and continue to find other kids who are looking for an opportunity to build friendships and skills,” Acker said. “I hope that all students find something they’re passionate about, build relationships and through that build confidence and connections that will last well into their adult lives.”

As a freshman, Norton switched to the event from competing in Lincoln Douglas debate in seventh grade. Now, at competitions,

she is given a choice of three topics and 30 minutes to prepare before delivering a seven-minute speech.

“We’re just kind of playing with the cards that we were dealt,” she said. “I found that some things I’ve worked on, typically related to things such as infrastructure, have been brought up quite a few times, so I can sometimes build off of an old speech on the topic.”

Norton said it’s been helpful that during the 30-minute preparation time, she can use notes and internet sources. Before competitions, she researches National Speech and Debate Association’s prompts and keeps up on current events.

As Norton prepares for nationals, she is evaluating how other people deliver their speeches, from vocabulary to how it flowed on stage.

“I find that it gives me tips on what word choices I make and how I should present myself,” Norton said. “I have a fear of public speaking; speaking in front of people always makes me a tad bit nervous. I used to pace, but now I just take some deep breaths and tell myself not to rush everything.”

Norton qualified for nationals at a tournament held in March at Price.

“It was a surreal experience. When I heard my name called, I was like, ‘you’re kidding me?’” she said.

Now, she and her teammates will be amongst the 1,600 students competing for the top spots in the nation. l

Seven students to represent Corner Canyon High at international DECA contest

his spring, Corner Canyon High junior Jarret Jones was looking over his 20-page business services paper before he and six other Corner Canyon students were to compete in the international DECA conference.

“I can make revisions to the paper to change some aspects to make it even better,” said the second-place state finisher in his first year of participating in DECA. DECA, or Distributive Education Clubs of America, prepares emerging high school and college leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. There are more than 175,000 members worldwide, including 3,200 high school chapters This is the first year DECA held an in-person international competition since 2019, as 2020 events were canceled because of COVID-19 safety and health guidelines. Last year, internationals was held virtually.

Only Corner Canyon’s captain and senior, John Norton, has competed internationally in person.

“I’m really excited,” he said. “I went as a freshman and it really amazed me. I had not expected the kind of camaraderie you have bonding with a group of people you know for a week.

I’m really excited for that. I think we’ve got a good shot this year; we really have a good powerhouse team. Everyone who qualified is going and is prepared.”

In Atlanta, Norton will compete in entrepreneurship, a contest he won at state both his sophomore and junior year. This year, he took second place at state.

Corner Canyon DEX adviser, Stephanie Morgan, said her team is rebounding from the inability to do much during the pandemic.

“COVID really hurt club activities; almost every DECA activity and field trip was canceled, so we’ve been trying to do more with competitions and other activities,” she said.

For example, Morgan said they’ve helped with school service projects and toured local businesses such as Provo Beach, doTERRA, Boondocks, Top Golf, Airborne and Alcatraz.

“The businesses usually take the students around, then talk to them about marketing strategies, social media – things students can learn from professionals in field,” she said. “We’ve been told how they run their businesses, how much revenue they bring in from businesses versus private parties and they give us all the numbers. Students loved hearing specifics about how much money businesses make off certain stuff and how they strategize to make money. We love it, as teachers, because it makes everything we’ve been teaching them all of the sudden seem applicable in real life.”

Those field trips pull about 100 students from three teachers’ classes – Morgan’s as well as from her first-year assistant coach Jonas Jones and Jon Hansen, who was the former state DECA adviser.

Those numbers have helped build the club to more than 200 members, which is the most in the state. Corner Canyon was recognized at the state conference for being the largest chapter.

Morgan gives a lot of the credit to both Norton and Hansen.

“John Norton is our DECA president and our sterling scholar in business and marketing. He’s just a phenomenal student who’s more passionate about DECA than anyone. He’s been instrumental in growing the club and preparing the kids for competition,” she said. “And my secret is Jon Hansen. He has been a tremendous help training and preparing the students – and me as a first-year adviser – in competitions. He pulled previous years’ role-plays and had our seniors show the new club members things like how to greet the judges. He also showed them his best techniques for notes, which students are

allowed to take in for role-play.”

Jones said those role-playing scenarios helped him in his preparation.

“They showed us how we should present ourselves in a business setting and gave us some public speaking tips,” he said, adding that he has used his writing skills as well as his knowledge of business in his competition.

Morgan said that many DECA students have taken business courses at the school and through concurrent enrollment, so they have a solid understanding of terminology and knowledge.

“We see they have the knowledge and vocabulary to draw upon from those classes and experiences visiting businesses,” she said.

Corner Canyon competed at the Aggie Invitational at Utah State University in October, which was the first contest for the majority of the 45 students who attended. The school participated in regionals Jan. 21 at Brigham Young University and then went to state in late February at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

Norton, who joined DECA after seeing the fun his older brother was having in the chapter, competed most of the year in entrepreneurship, which gives contestants a scenario that there’s a start-up company experiencing a problem.

“So, it’s my job to solve that problem in the time that’s given,” he said. “My dad owns his own business and that helped a lot even though the business is not related to anything with the contest. It has just helped to have someone who can provide insight on things you might not think about when starting a business.”

At state, he competed in entrepreneurship as well as a professional sales event because, “people always joke with me that I could sell ice to an Eskimo.” He finished fourth in that contest.

“I’m always thinking of new ways to expand my knowledge so I can do better, things that I need to do to understand how all of this works and how I can be part of it,” he said. “With DECA, I’ve had the opportunity to be a leader. I lead by example. When I get people involved in DECA events, I show them

the benefits they can have and why this is important. When I went to my first DECA tournament, I absolutely loved it. I had so much fun. There is a sense of community and a kind of family relationship that I really did not think could be gained in high school. At school, I found my home; I found my family.”

That bonding and support of his teammates and his instructors is something Jones appreciates.

“The environment is fun and I’m working with a group of smart kids,” he said. “I love the instructors and I’m learning skills I’ll probably need later in my career.”

Many of those skills have focused on his written event where he showed how he could improve employee experiences at Utah Wellness Institute, a business owned by his grandfather who is a chiropractor.

Jones interviewed his grandfather, surveyed his employees, found out strategies that worked and failed in the past, researched other companies and made a plan on how to reduce the workload, boost morale through employee incentives and build relationships.

“My grandpa thought there were some good ideas and is in the process of implementing some of them right now,” Jones said. “At state, I answered questions like ‘what steps did you have to take and why?’

Jones also medaled in principles of business management at state, but can only compete at internationals in one category, so he plans to present his employee improvement plan.

“There was a lot of work and time involved with the paper, but I’m glad I pushed through. It was a good experience to go and present to judges,” he said.

Morgan said that it was an opportunity that bonded the relationship between Jones and his grandfather.

“It was really neat for him to be able to work with his grandpa and compete based on that experience. He is an all-star student, really sharp, and had some great ideas,” she said.

With internationals ahead, she reflected on the year: “We have a lot of great students, and they did an awesome job in our competitions. I’m excited for next year.” l

Summer meals available for youth at four Canyons schools

his summer students are able to eat school breakfast and lunch.

The free school meals are provided to all children 18 years and younger at four Canyons School District elementary schools, three in Midvale and one in Sandy.

They are East Midvale Elementary, 6990 S. 300 East, Midvale; Midvale Elementary, 7830 South Chapel Street, Midvale; Midvalley Elementary, 217 E. 7800 South, Midvale; and Sandy Elementary, 8725 S. 280 East, Sandy.

At all locations, breakfast will be served from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on weekdays.

There will be no meal service on July 4 and July 25.

The meals, provided through the federally approved food service program, will begin on June 1 and run through July 29. Meals will be served inside school cafeterias; there will be no curbside sack distribution. l

Salt Lake County receives EPA funds to clean up contaminated sites for development

B

rownfield areas in Salt Lake County can hinder development because, without proper cleanup, redevelopment or reuse they could spread contamination to surrounding areas. Most brownfields are properties with old gas stations, auto repair shops and dry cleaners, or near smelters, railroad lines and mines.

But the Environmental Protection Agency has awarded Salt Lake County nearly $4 million in an effort to clean up these sites and create vibrant communities and business centers.

“We’re grateful for the EPA’s substantial investment in Salt Lake County,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “It expands our ability to effectively leverage the revolving loan fund and make a difference.”

The EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund allows the county and its coalition partners (Salt Lake City and Ogden) to issue loans to public or private property owners who meet EPA qualifications for assistance with brownfields.

Funds are expected to help clean at least 10 properties in the next few years, many of which are in former industrial areas that need significant cleanup to be safely redeveloped.

Loans are available to qualified governmental entities, site owners, or developers with lowto zero-interest rates.

“With our community’s history of industrial and mining work, there’s no shortage of properties that could use this EPA money for cleanup efforts,” said Kersten Swinyard, program manager for the Wasatch Brownfields Coalition and Salt Lake County senior economic development manager. “We’ll use this money to accelerate redevelopment on those contaminated properties and make our cities safer and cleaner for everyone.”

In 2021, Centro Civico Mexicano received funds to work with the county to remove asbestos, mercury, hydrocarbons, and other contaminants in the soil. The remediated property now features a community center and 61 apartments for low-income seniors. The cleanup led to more than $25.2 million in leveraged redevelopment funding on the project.

The Wasatch Brownfields Coalition works closely with the EPA and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality throughout the cleanup processes. The EPA has awarded $5,850,000 in total to Salt Lake County throughout its program history.

Professional cornhole league hosts tournament in Sandy

C

ornhole, played at the professional level, took over Sandy’s Mountain America Expo Center this past month.

The American Cornhole League is the highest tier of talent the game has to offer. The ACL has over 250 registered pro players and their matches are televised on ESPN. “I was tailgating,” ACL founder and commissioner Stacey Moore said about starting the league. “We were using cornhole as an activation for sponsors at NASCAR races and NFL games. I saw a group of players playing the game way more seriously than I was. The more I talked to the serious players I realized there is a lot of strategy to it.”

ACL has been in existence for six years.

It has a following of professional players that compete in several tournaments held across the country.

Salt Lake City is the home of one of the platform sponsors. Allcornhole is the title manufacturer of the professional board used on the circuit. The opportunity to host the league here was delayed by the pandemic, but this year event number three was held in Sandy.

The league has over 150,000 active players and several formats including singles, doubles, and teams format. The teams have a season of 16 matches. Professional players are drafted to a team and play against the oth-

er drafted teams, similar to the NFL. The top team in the standings will win the championship at the end of the year.

The Woodchucks sit atop the current ACL team standings. Sharpshooters are second and the Freeze third.

“The pros come from all over the United States. The sport has increased in popularity.

People play it casually all over the place, but more and more people are playing competitively. We are being proactive, cornhole is on track to become an Olympic sport. The singles and doubles divisions are gender-neutral. Last year, a male was against a female to become world champion,” Moore said.

Isabella Surprenant, a 15-year-old from Lawton, Oklahoma is one of the youngest players in the ACL pro division and has become a top-ranked player.

“I started playing beach cornhole in Florida nearly 15 years ago,” Harry Stoltzfus from Fort Collins, Colorado said. “I bought a set of boards at an RV show and now we travel the country playing in tournaments.”

The ACL hosts Superhole competitions at all of the season events. They match a professional player with a celebrity all in the name of charity.

“The celebrities play in a mini tournament. They get to know the sport and get some

tips along the way. We are starting to see celebrities catch the bug and more and more are taking this seriously,” Moore said.

Salt City Cornhole is a local group of players. They host tournaments at Allstar Lanes and Pins and Ales in West Valley. There are also several other groups in the state.

“It is a place for a beginner to more advanced players,” Mcgowan said.

It is not just a backyard barbecue game anymore. Anyone can play. Anyone can win. l

Summit Academy students memorize, recite poems, original speeches

I

n the early years when Summit Academy began its poetry and speech festival, there was Crocodiles with toothaches, dogs, cats with jetpacks, swings, gremlins, dragons, mice, dolls, St. Nicholas and a boring day.

Through the years, students have recited material from Maya Angelo to Roald Dahl to pieces from musicals.

Some students recited from presidents John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Theodore Roosevelt and former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

There also have been original poems, such as one in 2012 about “The Barnyard Bash,” that left the audience laughing, and serious topics such as “Dishonesty in the Government and the Consequence.”

This year was no different as topics varied when students took the stage in April.

The poetry and speech festival is a cumulative project based on the monthly opportunities when Summit Academy students learn and recite poetry.

However, for this festival, students select and memorized a published speech or poem and presented it to their class.

For older students, an original speech

or poem also may be accepted.

Students have been judged on their memorization and fluidity, their voice and expression, their poise, eye contact and gestures and the content and difficulty of their pieces.

Honorees selected at the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event

ardware Creative Collective and Comcast partnered to host the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event in Salt Lake City on Apr. 20. The celebration honored Utah Black Creatives in a range of industries from the arts, business, education and film to mental health, armed forces, tech and venture capital.

Honorees were selected based on their ability to showcase their creativity through inspiration, intersection and innovation.

“It was truly amazing to see something that started as a vision and brainstorming with folks around a kitchen table turn into an extraordinary celebration of Utah’s Black creatives,” said Deneiva Knight, External Affairs Director, Comcast Mountain West Region. “For me, Hardware Collective is a platform for Black creatives to acknowledge and celebrate themselves and their peers versus waiting and hoping to receive accolades from outsiders. The love and appreciation in the room that night were unmatchable.”

Fluoride will remain in Draper’s water

fter two postponements, the result of the vote regarding fluoride in Draper’s water was announced by WaterPro March 17.

57% voted in favor of keeping fluoride in the water 43% voted against keeping fluoride in the water Darrin Jensen-Peterson is CEO and General Manager of WaterPro, a position he’s held since 2009. He said WaterPro had talked inhouse about bringing up the issue for a vote in 2020, but with no shareholders meeting that year due to Covid, that didn’t happen. He explained the process involved in finally putting it to vote for the shareholders in 2022, and also why there were two postponements in the process.

“The election was slated to be part of the annual shareholders meeting in March 2021 (those meetings normally happen in March every year). But because of Covid, we pushed the meeting to September 2021. At that time, we were also going to have a vote on whether to keep fluoride in the water or not. We sent out information to have the vote for 2021 in September. We got a handful of residents concerned that they felt like there was not enough information on whether to keep it in or take it out, and they wanted additional information.

At that time, we decided to pull it off the ballot

so we could give our residents additional information. Knowing we had our upcoming shareholders meeting in March 2022 we worked with a PR firm to get their thoughts on what would be the best way to handle this,” he said.

The firm hired by WaterPro, Wilkinson & Ferrari, has helped other water agencies and UDOT, according to Jensen-Peterson. WaterPro had some customers who felt like a portion of the initial information they’d sent out about fluoride was outdated, so the company sent out notifications to residents asking for their opinions, whether for or against. All of the information customers sent in reply, whether via email or letter to the company, was posted to the company’s website.

WaterPro also sent a mailer out to all Draper residents so that those who might not look at the website would see opinions for and against fluoridation.

Following that, every resident of Draper who owns shares of water was mailed a ballot in February 2022. They could be returned by mail, email, dropped off at the company’s office, or delivered in person at the shareholders meeting March 16. The results were tallied and announced the next day.

there was no fluoride in the water and it went for a county-by-county vote. Salt Lake County residents voted to put it in the water, so that’s when the fluoridation of Draper’s water began.

“But being a private water utility, we had the right to go to our shareholders and ask them what they would like and that’s why we did it.

We appreciate both sides and people’s input through the process. It went fairly smoothly.”

“At this point, we’ll continue fluoridating the water. We listened to residents, they wanted it, so we’ll continue to do it,” Jensen-Peterson said. l

Another professional sports team comes to Utah

ions Bank Stadium continues to become a sports destination in the state as yet another professional sports organization, the Salt Lake Shred, made its debut there last month. The Shred compete in the American Ultimate Disc League, a fast-growing league that has expanded with three additional teams this year.

It’s actually not the first professional ultimate frisbee team to exist in the state of Utah. The Salt Lake Lions were formed in 2014, but lasted only one year. Since that time, local ultimate organizations around the state have worked diligently to build the sports’ popularity at a grassroots level.

“The youth are getting better and better and our college teams are getting increasingly more attention on the national stage. We wanted to provide an opportunity to compete at the very highest levels to give kids something to shoot for,” said Joel Dehlin, one of the founders of the new team.

A press release by the Shred cites national success by local teams - both at the high school and collegiate level - as one reason for optimism. Lone Peak High School for example, had both a boys and girls team place in the top three in a national tournament.

The growing pool of talented players led to the creation of a professional women’s team two years ago: the Utah Wild. Now the men are getting in on the action too.

The team held open tryouts at the stadium earlier this year, which attracted about 150 hopefuls. From there, the coaches narrowed the group down to a final roster of 31 players. The team has a healthy mix of local players with experience playing together as well as AUDL veterans.

“The talent is extraordinary,” Dehlin said. “These were terribly difficult decisions. In the past, if you were a great ulti-

mate player then you could play for whatever team you wanted in Utah. This is probably the first time in history that truly great players didn’t make a team they wanted to be on in Utah. This bodes well for the future of the sport in Utah.”

If the team’s first two games are any indication, the coaches made some good decisions when they put together the team.

On a road trip to southern California, the team defeated the San Diego Growlers and the LA Aviators. The wins were even more impressive considering that San Diego is the reigning champion for the Western Division.

In their home opener, the Shred defeated the Seattle Cascades in dominant fashion. They led throughout and finished with a 32-21 victory in front of a crowd of several thousand fans.

“The Zions Bank Stadium venue is incredible. It’s a perfect size for us and it’s beautiful. The staff there are very accommodating and anxious to work together. We’re very excited about our choice to play our games in Herriman,” Dehlin said.

For residents who maybe aren’t familiar with the sport of ultimate frisbee, Dehlin said that it’s an easy sport to start watching.

“When people come watch, they’re hooked. It’s a great, family-friendly environment. It’s super fun, very exciting and very affordable. There are only six home games and we expect many will come out to the first game and then come back to at least one, if not all, of the rest of our home games. It’s just a fun experience,” he said.

Remaining home games for the Shred will take place on June 3, 10 and 24 and July 22 and 29. l

JDCHS girls golf led by two All-State golfers

or the second consecutive year, the Juan Diego Catholic High School girls golf team placed in the top five at the state tournament. This year, playing in 3A, the Soaring Eagle squad came in fourth behind the play of sophomore Grayson Gagnon and junior captain Cabria Walters May 11-12 at Oquirrh Hills Golf Course. Gagnon duplicated her results from her freshman year at the 2021 state tournament with a seventh place finish while Walters came in 10th, both earning All-State honors.

“The girls had some tough conditions to deal with both days, but battled hard. Scores were higher for every team,” said head coach Jason Andersen. “I am so proud of Grayson and Cabria and the whole team.”

Gagnon and Walters shot a 90 and 96 the first day, respectively, and made a push the final day to move up the leadership with rounds of 88 and 87 and be recognized as All-State golfers.

Other placers at state for Juan Diego— who scored 780 as a team behind first-place finisher Richfield’s 674—were sophomore Ashley Cutshall (tied for 25th), sophomore Zoe Pappas (tied for 46th), sophomore Jazmin Asmar (57th) and freshman Abby Quercia (68th).

This season was shortened initially due

to the weather, but once Juan Diego got on the course, they made the most of it. In the first tournament at Glendale March 9, Gagnon shot a 75 to win medalist honors.

“I have been coaching for six years in 3A and 4A and this is the lowest score I have seen in region play,” Andersen said. “I am so proud of Grayson. Her focus and determination is incredible.”

Gagnon’s round was tops in Region 15 for the season and she was joined on the All-Region team by Walters, Cutshall and Asmar in leading the Soaring Eagle squad to a second-place finish in the region. Cutshall’s 85 at The Ridge April 6 was a personal best while Pappas’ play the first day of state—with a score of 108—placed her in fourth on the team and earned the sophomore a varsity letter.

Andersen’s mantra for the girls golf program he is building is: “It’s not good, it’s not bad, it just is.” Despite the small numbers, his past two teams have third- and fourth-place finishes in the state with two All-State golfers each of those years.

“It doesn’t get much closer to a family than we are as a team,” Andersen said of his seven-member squad, which also included sophomore—and newcomer to golf—Brooklyn Willes who competes in cheer as well.l

CCHS girls golf team fourth at state

T

he Corner Canyon High girls golf team came in fourth at the 6A state tournament at Stonebridge May 9-10, led by junior Victoria Romney’s fifth-place finish. Lone Peak won state by 59 strokes over second-place Herriman.

Romney, who came in seventh last year in another All-State performance, moved up the leaderboard on day two after a round of 79 had her tied in eighth place with teammate Alyssa Meadows.

A score of 85 in the second round for Meadows put the sophomore in a tie for 10th at the state tournament.

Also scoring for the Chargers were Bella Boman, who tied for 29th with rounds of 90 and 91, along with Laney Ross (35th), Abby Brady (48th) and Laila Rowe (tied for 54th).

Head coach Alexis Gagon was monitoring her girls’ play closely online as she was home with a baby who was born the week before the tournament. “It was very close between the second- and fourth-place teams [with nine shots separating the placements] as Lone Peak ran away with first place. The conditions were hard, but the girls played awesome. We are all very proud of them,” she said.

At the Region tournament May 2 at Meadowbrook, Corner Canyon placed second to the Knights by 34 strokes.

Chargers that received All-Region honors were Romney, Meadows, senior Boman and junior Rowe.

Also on the CCHS squad this season were seniors Abby Brady, Alexa Christiansen and Malin Jorgenson; juniors Vivien Lee and Laney Ross; sophomore Aubrey Hobson; and freshmen Annie Kane, Rylee Reinbold and Beca Rogness.

Pretty in pink—city adds another flowering Kwanzan cherry to its 10,000-plus trees

C

ity officials gathered to celebrate Arbor Day by planting a Kwanzan cherry tree at Draper’s Inauguration Park on the last Friday in April. The mid-morning sun was deceiving with chilly temperatures and wind, but the flowering tree’s pink blossoms shone bright amid the other, more mature Kwanzan cherry trees already dotting the park’s landscape.

Brett Sorenson lives directly across the street from Inauguration Park. He was delighted to see another flowering tree planted, a tree he’ll be able to enjoy the view of from his front room. “We love these trees around here. When they bloom, they’re gorgeous,” he said.

Draper’s new city forester Taylor Parker read a proclamation and a letter from the Arbor Day Foundation. Draper City meets that organization’s requirements to be recognized as a Tree City by having a Tree Commission (board of volunteers) who work with a budget to plant and maintain trees in Draper along with other foundation requirements, one of which is having more than 10,000 trees within the city. Parker noted that trees have many valuable benefits including helping prevent erosion, increasing property values and beautifying the city.

When it came time to plant the tree, Parker worked with Brent Williams, the city’s Parks Manager, to dig the hole and insert the tree. Parker first cut the tree’s roots to

help them spread out since it had come from a container. He also noted the importance of planting a tree’s main root just one inch below the soil, otherwise the tree could suffocate. And the forester said he wouldn’t be adding fertilizer to the soil because not doing so would encourage the tree’s roots to spread out into the existing soil.

Mayor Troy Walker noted that Draper has been recognized as a Tree City for more than 24 years. “Trees are going to be more important,” Walker said, as we face issues of drought.

David Cloward has served on the city’s Tree Commission for eight years and he’s currently the chairperson. He mentioned Draper’s tree-lined streets in his remarks, he thanked his fellow volunteers on the Tree Commission, and he noted the importance of trees in dealing with “big picture issues” such as climate change and clean air. “When you plant a tree, it becomes real. You see the benefits a tree can provide,” Cloward said.

The Arbor Day Foundation urges all residents to join in the effort to protect trees and woodlands. The city’s website has information provided by the Tree Commission on recommended trees to plant in Draper as well as links to planting tips from the Arbor Day Foundation and information from Salt Lake City’s Public Works Department about caring for trees in a dry climate. l

All Canyons District’s schools to dismiss early on Fridays to allow for teacher collaboration

ith a 5-1 vote, Canyons Board of Education approved to have all Canyons School District’s elementary and secondary schools dismiss early on Fridays starting in fall 2022, allowing teachers to have time to collaborate.

It was not without many discussions and considerations, said Canyons Superintendent Rick Robins.

“We’re excited that this will give our teachers the opportunity to collaborate, not just amongst their peers in the building, but also with other colleagues who are teaching the same grade or subject as well as vertically with grade school or high school teachers working with the middle school teachers,” he said. “The ultimate goal is to improve student academic outcomes.”

The proposed times for early outs on Fridays in elementary schools are similar to existing pick-up times this school year with dismissals around 1:10 to 1:55 p.m.

Middle school students will no longer have a late start on Fridays beginning in August. The early out dismissal times on Fridays are estimated to be around 1 to 1:30 p.m.

High school students will be dismissed at about 12:55 p.m. on Fridays beginning in the fall. Alta High will discontinue its late start.

Robins said the district will finalize the times and share those with patrons.

Much discussion focused on determining the day and time of the collaboration during the third presentation to the board.

Student safety, busing availability, staffing at external day cares or availability of older siblings taking care of younger brothers and sisters, ability to have after-school activities or jobs, family time, research on late starts benefitting other students, school schedules, before-school and after-school programs, patron input, and other topics were discussed.

“I appreciate the board seeing the value of allowing our teachers to have collaboration time and making that a priority.

We looked at every consideration to see what has the least impact on students and families in providing our teachers this valuable time,” he said. “This is really a commitment to provide our educators embedded time for better student outcomes. They will really understand how and what our students need to learn and what’s best for them. This collaboration time has been proven over and over that it does improve instruction in the classroom.”

Robins also provided data to the board on the least missed days for elementary, middle and high school students as well as teachers on those levels. He said data also was reviewed for high school teachers who serve as coaches or advisers to teams and extracurricular activities as well as students who are involved in those.

“Those kids are out of school anyway often on Friday afternoons leaving for a game or a competition or performance, so this actually has less impact on them missing school,” he said. “And only about 3% of our faculty will be impacted.”

Even with early dismissals, students will receive more than the 990 required hours of education the state requires, Robins said, adding that currently that requirement is waived during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Four principals, who talked to patrons as well as teachers in their schools, also addressed the board. They pushed for the board to make a decision so they could plan for the upcoming school year.

Midvale Middle School Principal Mindy Robison added that teacher collaboration time “matters because it changes the trajectory of the day for the students,” both with academics and behavior.

We really need something unified to help our teachers integrate all these changes to education. Summer sports camps held at Corner Canyon and Juan Diego

here are plenty of sports camps and trainings being offered this summer at Corner Canyon and Juan Diego Catholic high schools. Here’s a look at what’s on tap: Corner Canyon Due to refinishing of the gym floors, camps for boys and girls basketball and girls volleyball will not be held this summer, but there are other opportunities outside of the gym.

Cross country will have summer training May 31 to Aug. 4 for seventh- through 12th-graders. Practices Monday through Wednesday will be held at Draper Park, meeting at the north pavilion at 7:30 a.m.

On Thursday, runners meet at Andy Ballard Equestrian Center, located at 1600 E. Highland Drive at 7:30 a.m.

For girls lacrosse, a one-day free clinic is scheduled for girls in the Draper area in grades five through 12 on Sat., July 16 from 9 a.m. to noon at the CCHS stadium.

Head coach Matthew Kenning said that all abilities are welcome.

Boys and girls tennis players can have professional instruction in ongoing sessions throughout the summer for firstthrough 12th-graders at the CCHS tennis courts. One-week sessions that are held

A wrestling HIT Technique camp will be taught by Arizona State assistant coach Lee Pritts, who has been a Division I collegiate coach for 23 years following an All-American career at Eastern Michigan. The camp is scheduled for June 20-23 in the CCHS wrestling room for those in sixth through 12th grades. The philosophy of this camp is teaching the toughness and discipline that is required for wrestling while also discussing nutrition, goal-setting and sleep to ensure optimum success.

he Corner Canyon High boys tennis team were again among the top teams in the state after the 6A tennis tournament. This year, they tied for third with Farmington after play May 12 and 14 at Liberty Park.

“State was a heartbreaker,” said head coach Allison Rideout. “We had incredibly difficult draws due to the system change of seeding. It really hurt us. The boys played amazing with what they were given, but at the end of the day it didn’t go our way.”

The Chargers had two lineup spots—at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles—make the finals before losing in tight matches.

Spencer Willes defeated West Jordan’s Jefferson Larson in the preliminaries to reach the round of 16 where he beat Layton’s Baden Record 6-4, 6-2, then Farmington’s Marcin Rucinski 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Weber’s Gabriel Olsen 6-2, 6-0 before the championship. In the finals, he lost to American Fork’s Antoni Ramon 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).

“Spencer played some of his best tennis.

We were all really proud of him,” Rideout said. “He was also an incredible captain and leader this year.”

Brothers Cole Jenkins and Charlie Jenkins also advanced to the championships against Lone Peak’s Nathan Ashton/Abram Robbins where they lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

The duo’s road to the finals included wins over Fremont’s Luke Norris/Ethan Inglsbe in prelims, Herriman’s Ethan Phelps/Ashton Phelps 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 16, Syracuse’s Mitchell Lindhardt/Jay Taggart 6-4, 6-0 in the quarters and Farmington’s Spencer Ostermiller/Nathaniel Bullard 6-2, 6-2 in the

semis.

“That was some of the best doubles they have played,” Rideout said. “Charlie dug out so many points and kept them in it and Cole played basically one-handed because of an injury he sustained at region. He was incredible at the net.”

Beau Welker, at No. 2 singles, lost in the semifinals to Farmington’s Justin Steed 7-5, 6-4 after wins over Pleasant Grove’s Austin Barker 6-3, 6-1 and Lone Peak’s Davis Schulthies 6-1, 6-4.

No. 1 singles player Aidan Rideout, who won state last season at No. 2 singles, lost to eventual champion Caden Hasley, of American Fork, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals following victories against West Jordan’s Matthew Thompson in the prelims and Granger’s Simeon Thomas 6-0, 6-0.

Tyler Burraston and Jaxson Roberts, who teamed up at No. 2 doubles, defeated Syracuse’s Ty Richardson/Rhett Kelley in the prelims before losing to Lone Peak’s Lucas Jackson/Simon Bliss 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the round of 16.

CCHS boys lacrosse team honored for its service to Shoshone Nation by First Lady

eing ranked No. 1 in the state the entire season following a state championship run last year involves a lot of time on the field dedicated to maintain an elite level of play. But, the Corner Canyon High boys lacrosse team have also been investing in causes outside of the sport to benefit others.

For their “Season of Service” efforts, Utah’s First Lady Abby Cox honored the team with her first-ever Show Up Utah award which recognizes excellence for service in the areas of Service, Foster Care, Educator Wellness and Unified Sports in her new initiative of the same name.

In presenting the Chargers program with this award May 10, Cox said, “These lacrosse players, they came and they helped serve these dinners. They not only served, but they connected with the families as well, which I think was beautiful. These kids are making a difference in their communities.

They’re an example to the entire state.”

It simply started with a service opportunity in mid-March through faceoff player Anthony MacKay’s mother, Nikki, who works with Utah Foster Care—a “Sunday Supper” to help athletes from the University of Utah and BYU serve dinner to foster children. CCHS lacrosse coordinator Allyssa Mallory said Nikki MacKay expected a few boys to come, but was surprised to see the entire Chargers team show up.

“What we didn’t fully realize is the natural evolution of this one event that turned into what we have deemed to be their ‘Season of Service,’” Mallory said.

The momentum to serve continued with collecting diapers and other items to be sent to Ukraine following the Russian invasion of their country, creating an anti-bullying video in conjunction with Unified Sports athletes, promoting and supporting the Jersey Mike’s “Day of Giving” campaign and even spending a day off beautifying Corner Canyon’s school grounds.

“What we found is that if these boys don’t have something to do on their day off, they don’t play as well, and the boys recognized that too,” Mallory said. “Serving in these ways actually benefits the boys just as much as those receiving any help.”

Most recently, on May 14, the Corner Canyon team went back to the origin of their sport—which stems from Native American roots—to mark more than 100 graves and restore some sunken gravesites at the Shoshone Tribe’s sacred Washakie Cemetery.

Brad Perry, Vice Chairperson of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation expressed his appreciation for the service provided from the Chargers players in helping them locate graves and “honor and protect” their dead. “These exemplary young men showed the utmost character to our land and people,” he said. “This group of young men are as good a group of young people as we have ever seen. We were truly honored by their presence and dedication. We want to say, ‘Thank you’ and ‘Take State!’”

Alta High softball had all for one, one for all attitude

F

or this year’s Alta High softball team numbers didn’t really matter.

Though the team did not get the same amount of girls trying out for the team as they expected from years past, the team surpassed expectations and achieved a lot this season.

“The girls have learned that it does not matter if we have 50 or 12 players on the team,” said coach Kristin Evans. “They play for each other as one team.”

Sadie Gardner’s batting average for the season was .650, Abby Southern finished at an average of .516, and Adilee Dake was at .500. These three girls have smashed the team record for the year and have put in the hard work to join the 500 and up club.

“Our accomplishments will be that they are better on and off the field then when they started the year,” Evans said.

Other notable accomplishments this season include Sadie Gardner’s whopping 25 stolen bases, Cozzette Harrison’s 14, and Jessica Harrison’s 12. These girls have spent the year striving for greatness.

“One motto for our team is to do 1% better every day,” Evans said. “It means working on yourself or taking time to be a better teammate.”

In addition to their commitment to the

Alta Hawks softball team, there are two players on the team that have their sights set on a slightly bigger goal.

Gardner and Southern plan to play next level softball. However, both are undecided on which college they will attend and other playing opportunities they will pursue.

A one-horse race

W

hen I was in eighth grade, I was elected to the class senate. In ninth grade, I was elected as a cheerleader. Did I deserve these titles?

Probably not. But I’d bribed fellow students with copious amounts of candy because that’s the American way.

After a series of decidedly terrible life choices, my scholastic career drove off the rails and I never ran for election again. When I turned 18, I registered to vote and I’ve cast a vote in every election since. I also respond to Twitter polls, fill out Amazon reviews and take surveys at the bottom of yard-long Kohl’s receipts.

Now that I’m a semi-functioning adult, it’s up to me to choose the right people to lead us into the future. Since the future is nuclear bomb-shaped, we won’t need leaders much longer, but elections are important, at least until that mushroom cloud rises over the mountains.

Here’s why voting is funny. You’ll get a kick out of this. When I vote for new leadership or more progressive ideas, the person/issue I’m voting for rarely wins. Why? Because I live in conservative Utah.

Like, how can our leaders make money if we don’t let them relocate a prison across the valley so they can develop prime property? How can the state generate revenue on alcohol without ridiculous licensing fees and policies? How can we possibly treat educators, minorities, or uteruses with respect, without creating laws to rein them in?

And then they have the gall to say, vote in the leaders you want. How? Tell me how and I’ll do it! Phew. I must be off my anti-hysterical meds.

If I learned anything from running for office in junior high, it’s that voters will follow the candy. But as a female voter in Utah, I’m tired of the sugary-sweet, syrupy condescension.
