A

ll-American junior attacker Jon King, who led the nation in scoring with 112 goals this season, scored four goals to lead the undefeated Corner Canyon boys lacrosse team to the Division A state championship over defending state champion Park City 20-13 on May 28 at Park City High School.

“This is a great accomplishment and they did it in style,” said head coach Aaron Ika. “The boys were the favorites going into the year and they beat the reigning state champions by 10 and 7 to prove it.”

“I’m super excited about winning the first sanctioned state championship,” said King, who will play for St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia in 2022.

The Chargers trailed at halftime of the title game for the first time all season, but came out and scored five straight goals to take control of the game.

“When we were losing at half all we had to do was really call all the guys together and calm down,” King said. “We know how good we were as a team. All we had to do was go out on the field and show it, and that’s what we did. We were a different team in that second half; we played like we knew how to. Everyone on the team stepped up and played really well in that second half. I really think we put the West Coast on notice about how good we can be all season long.”

Lighthearted melodrama decided right Summit Academy show for COVID-19 year

I

t wasn’t an easy decision. It took Summit Academy theatre director weeks— months—to resolve, but by January, she knew the outcome: the show must go on.

During COVID-19, many area theatre teachers knew students needed the stage as a safe haven and as a creative outlet for the stressful year, but how to prepare and present the plays and musicals without the potential spread of the virus became the main concern.

For Aimee Rohling, it was no different. Her selection of “Rascals Under the Big Top” by Robert Swift was partially based on the fact that the one-act melodrama could be adapted online, if it needed to.

“We ended up putting it off and putting it off and putting it off because we weren’t sure we were going to be able to do the show this year, so we kept waiting,” Rohling said. “It was January when we knew we would be able to do something. It’s a one-act melodrama, and they’ve had fun learning the style of the old-fashion damsel in distress tie-her-to-thetracks comedy. I was concerned about getting it done in the circumstances and the time, so this was a really good choice for us. I knew we would be able to transition that to an online performance, so we were really looking for an adaptability to changing circumstances this year.”

While they spent a week filming the show, in case it had to be performed virtually, but that wasn’t the case as the 23 sixththrough eighth-grade students presented the show in person May 13-15 to a 50% capacity, masked audience. “(Double casting) was the plan initially,” Rohling said, however, she re-evaluated and decided against that plan after January auditions knowing they’d follow the mask mandate during rehearsals. “It was a funny show.

a good time and take everybody’s troubles away this year. This was a good way to just keep it lighthearted and have some fun with the kids—and expose them to something new that maybe they weren’t as familiar with this type of storytelling.”

A crash course on Salt Lake Valley’s water supply

W

ater is one of those things that people take for granted. We don’t really talk about it much until it becomes an issue. So now that Utah and the rest of the southwest are experiencing historic levels of drought, some Salt Lake valley residents might be realizing how little they know about the topic. So here’s a crash course lesson on the valley’s water supply.

Who manages the valley’s water supply?

The answer to this question depends on where you live.

If you live on the west side of the valley, then most of your water comes from the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District. They collect water from Jordanelle and Deer Creek reservoirs, as well as a collection of reservoirs in the Uinta Mountains. Twenty percent of its water also comes from groundwater, pumped from wells scattered around the valley.

The District then sells this water wholesale to cities including Draper, Herriman, Bluffdale, Riverton, South Jordan, South Salt Lake, Taylorsville, Midvale and West Jordan.

It also counts among its customers a few intermediary districts such as the Granger Hunter Improvement District, the Kearns Improvement District and the Magna Water Improvement District. While these smaller districts purchase as much as 90% of their water from Jordan Valley, they also supplement that with their own water supply from wells in the area.

The other big player when it comes to providing water to the Salt Lake Valley is the Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake & Sandy.

As its name suggests, this district provides water to Salt Lake City and Sandy City, the first and sixth most populous cities in the state. But wait, there’s more!

Salt Lake City’s Public Utilities department is responsible for more than just its own residents. They also provide drinking water for Cottonwood Heights, Millcreek, Holladay and parts of South Salt Lake and Murray.

More than 60% of all that water comes from the streams of Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon. That water is filtered by facilities owned by either the Metropolitan Water District or SLC. For example, the treatment facility at the mouth of Big Cottonwood is owned

by SLC, while the treatment facility for Little Cottonwood is owned by Metropolitan Water District.

Additionally, some cities own and operate their own water infrastructure to supplement what they purchase from their respective districts. Sandy City, for example, collects and treats water from the Bell Canyon Reservoir. Many cities also rely on various canals throughout the valley as a source of secondary water.

How much does our water cost?

It can be quite expensive to collect, treat, transport and deliver water to the over 1 million people who live, work or play in the Salt

The Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District operates on an operations budget of about $79 million per year, while the Metropolitan Water District has a budget of about $48 million.

Where does that money come from? The largest revenue source ($48 million) for Jordan Valley is from its wholesale contracts with its various member agencies. An additional $7 million comes from retail customers, usually homeowners in unincorporated areas that purchase water from the district directly.

The second-largest source of revenue for the district is property taxes, which comes in at about $20 million per year. As a special district with taxing authority, water districts are able to levy a property tax on residents within the district boundaries. The property tax rate for Jordan Valley is .0004%. The Metro District is below .0003%.

While residents around the valley have likely seen their rates increase over the years due to inflation, they’re still paying much lower rates than many people around the country, according to Linda Townes, public information manager for Jordan Valley. That’s because Utah’s mountainous landscape allows gravity to move our water for us, rather than paying for pump stations which use a huge amount of costly electricity.

Who is running these districts?

Between such large budgets and the task of managing a resource as crucial as water, it bodes asking who’s in charge of these districts.

board of trustees. Jordan Valley operates under a board of nine members. While the Metro District has a seven-member board.

Members of the board aren’t elected. Instead they are appointed by various legislative bodies from within the district’s boundaries.

Appointees can be elected officials themselves (such as South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey or Herriman City Councilmember Sherrie Ohrn who serve on the Jordan Valley board) or

they can be city employees or even private residents—whatever the nominating body thinks will best represent their interests.

As a governmental body, districts are required to hold regular public meetings. They also publish their budgets and other reports each year to keep residents informed.

Are we in danger of running out of water?

Between the state’s historic drought and rapid population growth, some residents may

wonder if we’re running out of water in the Salt Lake valley.

In short, the answer is no, residents of the Salt Lake valley don’t need to worry about rationing water anytime soon.

When it comes to growth, Townes said that water consumption hasn’t increased at the same rate as the population, suggesting that the District’s water conservancy efforts and efficiency standards have been effective.

“The good thing we’ve seen with growth is that we really expected our water use to skyrocket with the population growth and it hasn’t,” she said. “It’s stayed pretty steady, which means conservation is working. It’s happening. We are seeing a change.”

There are also still untapped sources of water which could come into play down the road. According to Townes, the Jordan Valley expected to begin developing the Bear River in 2015. However, a combination of other new sources and increased water efficiency made that unnecessary. Now, they may not have to dam the Bear River until 2060.

“It’s a pretty cool river and one of the last ones that’s not damned. We don’t want to develop it. It’d be great if we didn’t have to, but it’s our job to make sure there’s enough water for people,” Townes said.

The Metro District is also in good shape when it comes to water supply. Speaking to the Sandy City Council last month, general manager Mike DeVries said there’s no need to worry.

“Despite poor precipitation and snow pack conditions, because of storage and Metro’s various water supplies, we’re in a healthy state when it comes to supply for our member cities. We’re not anticipating any sort of shortages for our metro at this point,” he said.

It’s also important to know that most of the state’s water systems are self-contained.

For example, the systems that supply water throughout Salt Lake County aren’t connected to systems for other nearby counties. So if there are water shortages in other parts of the state, it wouldn’t be possible for them to dip into the supplies of the Jordan Valley or Metropolitan Districts, even if they were willing to share.

How can we conserve more water?

Whether from continued growth or continued droughts, water conservation will be increasingly important for residents of the Salt Lake valley. From the water districts themselves, to municipal governments to residents’ households, there’s a lot that can be done.

At the district level, the Jordan Valley has set a good example by relandscaping all of their facilities to be water efficient by replacing turf with vegetation that’s more at home in Utah’s desert climate.

The District also provides a number of programs, rebates and incentives for residents to improve their water efficiency. Those can be found at www.utahwatersavers.com.

City governments are also getting in on the conservation effort by requiring new de-

velopments to meet certain water efficiency standards. Many cities have also taken proactive measures during our current drought. Cottonwood Heights, for example, announced that its popular splash pad at Mountain View Park would remain closed throughout the summer.

Herriman City paused a requirement for developers to install landscaping on new projects, allowing them to delay the addition of extra vegetation until after the summer months.

Residents, meanwhile, have many options

for conserving water. They can do small things like take shorter showers or turn off the faucet while they brush their teeth. They can take advantage of the previously mentioned programs and get a more water-efficient toilet or relandscape their yards. But the most effective and easy thing they can do, according to Townes, is simply water their lawns less. If everyone adjusted to watering their lawns just one less day per week, it would have a huge impact on the region’s water supply outlook. l

Psych 101: Narcissistic abuse centers on control and manipulation

(This is where I feel obliged to share a warning. The following article discusses topics of abuse and may be triggering to some.)

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), narcissism is categorized as a Personality Disorder.

Narcissistic personality disorder has been primarily recognized through behavioral patterns steeped in a need for admiration and a lack of empathy. Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder tend to have a grandiose sense of self-importance, believing they are special and unique. In turn, they frequently have a lack of empathy and tend to be envious of others or believe others are envious of them. They may also be preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty and ideal love.

Conversations around recognizing narcissistic traits and managing relationships with narcissistic individuals have gained more popular attention in the last few years.

Now, there are two types of narcissism widely recognized. Overt or grandiose narcissism is primarily described above. Individuals may be arrogant and preoccupied with suc-

cess, wealth, attractiveness and power. However, there’s a less explicit type of narcissism.

Covert or vulnerable narcissism may be identified through self-absorbed and/or passive-aggressive behaviors. Individuals with covert narcissistic traits may be highly sensitive and have a history of impersonal and difficult relationships.

Narcissistic abuse has been recognized as a type of interpersonal abuse (and/or domestic abuse) and is beginning to be formally recognized in various governmental and legal documents and policies. On the surface, it may be difficult to differentiate narcissistic abuse from typified interpersonal abuse.

This tends to make narcissistic abuse more complicated and harder to prove. Some of the key reported differences include increase frequency and explicit intentionality. “The idea is that they totally know what they are doing,” reported an anonymous survivor.

Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder tend to exhibit numerous abusive behaviors. They may make attempts at isolation in order to maintain control and attention in the relationship, driving away friends and family relations of the other person. They tend to control finances, monitoring money closely, and only allowing limited access to

certain funds.

In abusive relationships, including those involving individuals with narcissistic personality disorder, there’s frequently a cycle of abuse involved. Psychologists have deemed the phases of abuse as idealization, devaluation and discarding. In idealization, otherwise known as “lovebombing,” the individual may shower the other with praise and gifts. This builds a sense of safety and trust.

In devaluation, the individual may use what was disclosed during the idealization phase as ammo to instill emotional responses and a sense of worthlessness. Then, the individual discards the other before starting the cycle over again.

Additionally, abusive relationships commonly involve manipulation tactics such as being overly critical and controlling, manufacturing situations to elicit emotional distress, engaging in hot and cold behavior, stonewalling, triangulating, blaming, shaming, deflecting and projecting.

Narcissistic abuse can occur in any relationship. While some of the focus above is on abuse in romantic relationships, it’s important to remember narcissistic abuse can be prevalent in friendships, familial relationships and working relationships. Those with

narcissistic personality disorder tend to be interpersonally exploitative as they take advantage of others to achieve their own ends. For example, friendships may only be maintained on a superficial level.

If you, or someone you know is experiencing abuse, some steps of recovery to enact right now may include: validating the survivors experience, identifying abusive traits, breaking habits of empathizing with the abuser, validating one’s own reality, creating or relying on a solid support network, grieving the good parts of the relationship, resolving trauma, improving self-love, and learning to recognize red flags and set boundaries.

In Utah, resources for domestic violence and interpersonal abuse include: the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, Utah Community Action, Utah Association of Family Support Centers, YWCA Utah’s Domestic Violence Shelter Programs and the Statewide Domestic Violence Info-line LINKline.

Calling walkers and dog owners for volunteer ‘pawtrol’ opportunity

raper’s Police Department is kicking off a brand new volunteer program for people who frequently walk with their fourlegged family members. It’s called Draper Dog Walker Watch (DDWW). The program launched in late June, but anyone can join at any time. Walkers are also welcome to participate without a furry friend.

Sue Campbell is in charge of crime prevention and coordinator of programs such as Neighborhood Watch for the police department. Her goal is to make Draper one of the safest cities in Utah. The dog walker watch program is an idea that came from the National Association of Town Watch, the people behind National Night Out. “It’s a community awareness program that anybody can be a part of. Folks will be taught how to observe suspicious activity and taught to understand what suspicious activity is, because a person by themselves is not suspicious, but a behavior can be,” Campbell said.

The idea behind DDWW is that people who walk frequently tend to know what is “normal” in their neighborhood or on their regular walking route versus something that seems out of place. They’re taught that seeing things such as a person walking through a parking lot, looking into car windows and trying car doors, is concerning, as would

be a person walking with a large duffle bag through a neighborhood late at night or early in the morning, or a “salesperson” that lingers at someone’s door, knocking many times to determine if anyone is home.

There’s no cost to participate and it involves less training than Neighborhood Watch, so it’s an easy way to get involved.

Participants are taught how to communicate with emergency dispatchers while remaining calm, how to describe a suspicious person, and how to identify helpful landmarks for responding officers and appropriately answer dispatcher questions.

“One of the things about having people call in emergencies is getting them over that fear that they’re bothering the police. More than 90% of arrests for in-progress crime are made because a citizen has called in.

Fewer happen because an officer might be driving down the road and see a crime in progress or the arrest is the result of follow up on a case. Citizens are the eyes and ears of the police department because no police department can be everywhere all the time, so we rely on citizens to inform us of suspicious behaviors and suspicious activities,” Campbell said.

PowerPoint presentation and fill out a form upon completion. They receive a digital certificate and are invited to pick up a blue bandana for their canine companion at the police department. Bandanas are reserved for dogs only.

We all have kind of have a civic duty…it takes a village. The police can’t do it by themselves, we have to have help from the community,” Campbell said. l

Draper Nights celebrates its 20th anniversary with three nights of music

D

raper Nights celebrates its 20th anniversary July 15, 16 and 17 with an array of musical performances and fireworks in Draper City Park. “This is going to be a historic celebration of unity, hope and gratitude,” said Draper Nights event manager LaVar Christensen. He noted that the concert series is special to the city of Draper. “It’s the same spirit of pioneer celebration that really makes it unique.”

Since 2001 when Christensen went to Draper City Council with his idea for a summer concert series, he has hand-picked the musical talent for Draper Nights. Beatlemania, a Beatles tribute show that Christensen enjoyed at a summer concert at EPCOT, was the first musical group to perform at Draper Nights. Peter Noone, BJ Thomas, Collin Raye, and America are just a few of the performers and bands to have taken the stage at Draper Nights over the past two decades.

Much of the music that will be performed at Draper Nights this year hearkens back to the era of the early 1970s. “People look forward to hearing all of these classic songs,” Christensen said. “The music is timeless. It’s something we love and love to share with the community.”

Two musical acts will perform each evening. The festivities begin July 15 with a per-

formance by “The Carpenters Tribute with Michelle Whited” followed by “Tapestry, The Carole King Songbook with Suzanne Davis.”

Davis is pleased to be returning to Draper Nights having played the event several years ago. “It was just a wonderful experience,” she said. “We were hoping to come back.”

“I’ve been a professional musician all my life,” Davis explained. A singer and pianist, she performed in other tribute shows before deciding to produce her own. The idea to do a Carole King tribute “just popped into my head,” she said. “She has such great music—the Tapestry album as well as the music she wrote before and after that.”

“Through doing this show I’ve learned so much about her place in music history,” Davis continued, noting that this is the 50th anniversary of King’s Tapestry album.

Davis finds joy in what she describes as “the symbiotic relationship” between musician and audience. “The song that seems to really hit people in the core—when you can hear that collective gasp—is ‘It’s Too Late.’ It’s like people are excited to hear it, that opening chord. I love it because I can hear the audience digging it,” she said.

with the Fire and Rain Band” will take the stage at Draper Nights followed by “A Symphonic Tribute to the Music of Paul McCartney featuring Tony Kishman.”

Kishman first performed on stage as Paul McCartney before there was such a thing as a tribute band. He was cast in a Broadway production of “Beatlemania” in 1977 and toured with it extensively. Kishman played the former Beatle in the “Legends in Concert” show for many years in Las Vegas before travelling the world in his own solo McCartney tribute show.

He put together his current show, “Live and Let Die: The Music of Paul McCartney,” in 2006. “It is a full symphony show, we have a 12-piece orchestra with a four-piece band behind me,” Kishman explained. “We like to play songs that are fun to do with a full symphony orchestra—wonderful, big songs.”

The audience at Draper Nights can expect to hear many Beatles songs as well as hits from McCartney’s Wings era and solo career. “We do

every song to a tee, like he did it in the studio,” Kishman said. “This show is my pride and joy.”

The inclusion of a Paul McCartney tribute in this year’s concert lineup alludes to the Beatlemania performance at the first Draper Nights 20 years ago.

Draper Nights goes out with a bang on July 17 with musical performances kicked off by the country band Sixwire from the popular ABC television show “Nashville,” followed by “Saturday in the Park,” featuring Jason Scheff, bassist and lead singer from the band Chicago.

Doug Dredge, the chair of Draper Days, commented, “In the past, the bands have been confined to one area of Draper City Park. This year, we get the whole park.” He encouraged people to “bring a blanket for the whole family to sit on. It’s just going to be really, really nice.”

uan Diego’s Lizzie Mataele placed fifth in the shot put and eighth in the discus at the 4A state track championships May 21-22 at Davis High School to lead the girls to a top-20 finish as a team. “It was good to actually have a season this year,” said head coach Chase Kallas. “I was really happy how the whole team competed this year. I felt like it was the best season we have had in a long time.” Also among the 16 athletes representing the Soaring Eagle program at state this year, Rangireva Colombel placed seventh in the javelin, Nyrvanah Crockett came in eighth in the long jump and Emmalyn Jacobs was ninth in the javelin.

The girls 4x200 lineup of Crockett, Elle Abundo, Natalie Lamb, Malia McConnell, Isabella Pickers and Catherine Stevens were also named All-State with an eighth-place finish. “For 10 [of our athletes] to place is amazing,” Kallas said. “I am very proud of everyone on the team.

ou (or your landlord) pays property tax every year, whether on residential or commercial property. There are several taxing entities that collect from what you pay, from the mosquito abatement, to the local school district.

The city only collects a small portion of that tax.

Residential properties pay only 45% of their property tax value, while commercial pays 100% of the value.

In Utah, a city’s yearly property tax income is a fixed number. This means that unless the city changes its tax rate, the city will only receive the dollar amount that it received the previous year.

If a city receives $20 million in 2019, it will receive $20 million in 2020, even if property values increase. This requires a city to consistently communicate with its residents its financial needs.

“The county auditor takes the previous year's revenue we received, adds any new growth, and they divide that by the assessed property tax value. If the assessed value goes up the tax rate goes down,” Midvale Assistant City Manager Kyle Maurer said. “When the assessed value goes down, the tax rate goes up.

This provides a steady income for the city.”

Budget information is public and available on every city website. The budget contains the cost for everything a city pays for, from road salt for plow trucks, employee salary, computers, website maintenance, first responder salary and ambulances, and much more.

The budget is prepared by the city’s finance department, and, depending on the form of government, either the mayor or the city manager.

Each department asks for what they need, but the mayor/city manager makes the final decision on who gets what.

Some cities involve the city council in the budget process, asking for council priorities in budget retreats or workshops in council meetings. Some cities prepare the budget and ask for council opinion when they present the tentative budget.

The tentative budget is posted to the city website and presented to the council in May, which gives council and the public a chance to comment and suggest alternatives.

A budget must be finalized and accepted by the city council by June 30 before the new fiscal year begins. (A city’s year runs from July 1 to June 30, known as a fiscal, i.e., financial, year.)

“If the council does not adopt a final budget by June 30, then the tentative budget would become the budget,” West Jordan communications officer Tauni Barker said. “If they had not adopted a tentative budget, then it would default to the mayor’s proposed budget.”

If the mayor does not approve of the budget that council passes, they can veto.

Sandy’s Mayor Bradburn vetoed a line item in 2020.

If a city decided to change its property tax percentage, a Truth in Taxation meeting is required. Salt Lake County decides the date of the Truth in Taxation so no two taxation meetings fall on the same date. The Truth in Taxation is a public meeting, all residents are invited to read the proposed budget and give comments before a final decision is made by the council. l

The Chargers lost to eventual state champion Weber 1-0 May 20 to complete a 12-7 season. In the state playoffs, Corner Canyon defeated West Jordan 4-2 May 14 in the first round with goals from Zach Bautista, Ethan Honeycutt, Miles McMullin and Carson Compton. They went on to beat Pleasant Grove 3-2 May 18 behind goals from Pogue, Samir Cuevas and Aiden McMullin to reach their matchup with Weber. Summit Academy music director credits students as he takes final bow

I

f an encore was needed, perhaps it should have been on May 8 when Summit Academy took first place in its division with its orchestra, choir and guitar performances at the Music in the Parks festival.

Along with its second-place band finish, the music program was awarded the Esprit de Corps award—for the fourth-straight year (skipping last year since the festival wasn’t held because of the COVID-19 pandemic).

It was the final competition for Alan Larson as Summit Academy’s eight-year director as he plans to teach middle school in Lehi this fall.

However, Larson credits Summit non-auditioned seventh- and eighth-grade student groups for their abilities, scoring “excellent” with their May 8 ratings. The instrumental festival was performed at Viewmont High while the choir was judged at Layton High. The Esprit de Corps award was presented to one school, which Larson said represents “decorum and sportsmanship.”

“That is really based off of how the students behaved throughout, how they interact with other students, how they interact with the host; also, you know like if anything happens, just how resilient they are,” he said. “So just in general, for me, it’s actually the award that I always aim for with all my students because it just means that

they’re good human beings and they’re really trying to be respectful of other people.”

This time, instead of an awards ceremony at Lagoon, Larson told the groups himself. While there was no public announcement or gathering this year to reduce the potential spread of the COVID-19 virus, the students still were pleased.

“It was a weird year for us; they had the directors come and get the trophies and then, I did a little mini-award ceremony on the bus as we went home,” he said. “They were pumped; they’re always super excited.”

Also different was the number of musical groups from neighboring states. Previously, besides the Mountain West, there have been teams from the Pacific Northwest. This year, Larson knew of only three Idaho schools competing and the stage was disinfected between groups. Even interactions were restricted with other schools.

“Normally, one of the most rewarding parts of coming to one of these festivals is that you get to stay and listen to other groups and hear what else is happening outside your school. This year, they only allowed members of the school that were performing to be in the auditorium at the time. That was a bummer,” he said.

Larson said that he felt their rankings and comments were fair.

“I told my students that some days when they were performing for me in class, they were at that excellent mark and some days they were in that superior range. Going back and listening to the recordings versus being there in the moment, you hear things, and you can be a little more critical of what you hear. For me, and these students, where they started this year and what they showed me the end of the year, was definitively— especially choir and orchestra—a superior

level in my eyes. I thought they just did really well—an incredible effort on their part,” he said.

Before Larson left, he shared the feedback with his students—in amongst the year-end concert and final testing.

“We’re just listening to him (judge), discussing it, talking about the future, what kinds of things could we do to improve or prevent things that we heard and what things did they say that were good that we can keep working on and make sure that we keep those habits,” he said. “This year (because of not having a rehearsal before their spring concert), it was more of a discussion, other years we take those comments and apply it to our final concert.”

While Larson sits this year’s five trophies on the shelf with others in the music room, the four-time Esprit de Corps trophy director leaves the program of about 40 students in the hands of the newly hired director, Alhana Loose.

“It’s a bittersweet thing,” he said.

“Choir is really my thing and I’ve always wanted to just teach choir. So, I’d be teaching only choir there at a larger middle school, which means bigger numbers and bigger pools of kids for choir. In every single way, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do, but at the same time, Summit is just an awesome place. We have amazing kids, and we have an amazing stuff. I will really miss being here for sure.” l

Alta dance teacher captures Canyons District’s teacher of the year title at pinnacle of 30-year career

W

hen Traci Raymond was in high school, she went through a very traumatic experience—so traumatic, she doesn’t want to talk about it. But what she does want to share with others is that her parents stood by her, insisting she go to school and graduate.

Raymond not only went to school, but she got involved and became a cheerleader—both in her high school days and now.

She didn’t realize the lesson her parents’ instilled in her until she went to college, where she faced other difficult circumstances. Instead of bailing, she decided, “I need to graduate and make a difference for those kids who go through hard situations and think of quitting, I want to be their advocate, to tell them not to quit. They can do hard things and rise above.”

That inspiration has guided Raymond into 30 years of teaching and coaching dance and helping high school students believe in themselves and achieve their goals.

That attitude was part of Raymond’s nomination for Canyons School District’s teacher of the year award.

“Traci Raymond is the epitome of just a phenomenal educator, leader, and mentor of her students,” said Alta High Principal Brian McGill, who performed with the A-town dance company for a school assembly in 2018. “She is a great example of the kind of teacher who should be in the classroom, as well as a mentor for students outside of the classroom.”

Raymond’s colleague, ballroom teacher Diana Hunt, said her friend “has a true genuine love for teaching. I know what she can do, and I know what she offers to students. She genuinely cares about them, and she’ll hold them to a higher standard. She encourages them to grow and become a better person, besides a better dancer. She encourages them to do hard things, to buck up and they realize later on, how much they’re grown. So many girls have graduated, and they’ll come back and thank her for understanding, for making them accountable and they’re grateful for making them stronger people.”

Raymond, who has taught at Alta High for 27 years and was the school’s nomination for the district award, learned shortly before the announcement that she was a district finalist.

“I actually was shocked because typically dance teachers don’t teach the core subjects, so I was actually shocked at it and had no idea that I would be in the top three,” said the one-time recipient of the prestigious Sorenson Legacy Awards for Excellence in Arts Education.

ucation presented all 48 school and program teachers of the year with crystal awards.

Then, Raymond was announced the District’s teacher of the year; the other two finalists were Albion Middle math teacher Dan Croshaw, the CSD Middle School Teacher of the Year, and Maria Teresa Gallo, a Silver Mesa Elementary dual-language immersion teacher. She received $1,000 from the Jordan Credit Union for being announced as district’s top teacher. The other two finalists each both received $500.

“It’s definitely a surprise. I started sobbing because that was a true shock to me,” Raymond said.

Raymond began at Alta as a single mom, teaching drill team for her first six years.

“The community, all the drill team parents, would take care of my daughter and watch her when she was about five years old. We had night practices and weekend competitions and they just took me in and loved me like I was part of the community.

I think that just started my love for this high school,” she said.

But it was that little girl who got her mother’s attention by asking “Mommy, when are you going to spend as much time with me as you do your dancers?” that got Raymond to shift from drill team to dance company, a non-competition team.

That little girl, Jerica, who now is 30 and has two young daughters, was by her mother’s side at the awards night.

“We’ve been through a lot together,” Raymond said. “If I could say something to my younger self, I would say, allow people to help you. Delegation is probably one of the teacher’s best friends. You do the best job you can, but to the point, if it starts stressing you out too much and it’s affecting you, then you’re doing too much.”

To boost positivity with students and herself, Raymond annually includes a theme as a life lesson with her curriculum.

“I started out my school year with a theme whether it was resiliency, or you can do hard things or stand up for yourself. I always did an introduction to my class, whether it’s health, aerobics, yoga, dance, dance company. I talk about what my theme for the year is and to have courage, have integrity and just try to teach my students how to be better adults and to trust themselves to get through hard things without shutting down,” she said.

This past year’s theme was “you can do hard things” and last year’s was “still I rise,” which came as inspiration during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last March’s soft closure of schools in response to the pandemic hit Alta High’s dance company hard.

“On Friday the 13th, we were doing a mock dress rehearsal and I thought, ‘I should probably invite some parents.’ Then, I actually had a parent that was coming say, ‘Hey, do you want me to record it. I can bring my camera.’ It ended up that was our concert video,” she said. “For the first two weeks, I kind of let the girls, just breathe. I would check in with them and make sure they were all OK because they were devastated. During our first Zoom meeting about two weeks after that, when we all saw everybody’s faces, everybody started crying. We’d been with each other 24-7 and then, all of a sudden, we’re cut off and told to stay home. I tried to give them hope, but I remember the day when I finally had to say, ‘I’m sorry dancers, we’re not going to do our concert.’”

When they returned this year, Raymond acknowledged the difficult ending with her dancers, but she said, “We keep going forward and we remember how we got through that hard time so when we have further

expressive vocabulary words that go along with that picture, and they would come up with what they thought the artist was thinking and seeing in this painting or statue. Then, my dancers would start creating movement and they choreograph about two minutes,” she said. “When we’re ready, the art class will come in and they’re going to say how true they think the movement was to the descriptive words and the theme. After my dancers have said what they thought the theme was, the artist actually gets up and talks about that piece of art.”

Raymond also is known to talk to her students individually, offering additional help or time to listen to any concerns. Or if it’s difficulty with a certain move, she has paired beginners or struggling students with those who have more experience.

“I’m always trying to find different ways to connect with them and also have them connect with one of my dance company girls because I’m 54 years old and I am

hard times, we can rely on that strength that we used for that,” playing right off of her themes for last year and this year.

This year, in the school year’s final weeks, she oversaw the dance company show and awards night, which she said was especially rewarding after not holding one last year.

The show serves as a fundraiser for the program, typically raising $10,000 during the three performance nights, she said, which has helped when she has taken her company through the years to New York City, Disneyworld and Disneyland.

The school-year themes also played into her own learning as she reached out to others to help her understand how to put her classes on Canvas online teaching platform.

“This was my 30th year and I struggled. I thought, how can I make it through this year?’” she said, then reached out to the girls basketball coach, who helped her learn it. “The biggest things that I truly had to learn was that I had to change my mindset. When I got really flustered, I had to say, ‘no, you can do this and just take it one day at a time.’”

Another aspect of her teaching she is proud of is cross-curriculum teaching with Advanced Placement art teacher, Katie Campbell. Campbell’s art students would come into Raymond’s Dance Academy class, which is considered an understudy dance class for dance company, and they bring their top artwork for small groups of dancers to interpret.

“We start talking about what are some

not going to do a leap,” she said. “I know these kids are going through so much that I want to help them be successful, but at the same time, I’m not a cuddler. I want them to learn that they have to work and communicate with me to make up a task. I’m more than willing, if you come communicate with me.”

Raymond has shared some of her teaching strategies and ideas with Daylin Williams, who recently was hired to teach and advise the dance company and dance academy.

Now, at the pinnacle of her career and after seeing the success of her former students who have graduated and become Rockettes or performed in Broadway, Raymond wants to quietly retire and watch her granddaughters’ dance. However, that will have to wait until she has completed her last assignment—completing an application, writing essays and explaining her teaching philosophy—as a contender for the state teacher of the year.

“I love my students; I’m going to just miss their happiness,” she said. “I’m going to miss teaching with some of my best friends and the camaraderie here. I just love all of them. We laugh and sometimes, we cry. I’m a very social person and that’s probably going to be the hardest thing.

Maybe having this award is good because it will keep me doing something, this application, so I don’t realize that I’m in retirement right off the bat. But first, I’m going to sleep in and not get up to a 5:15 alarm clock.” l

All-American senior attacker Eric Neilson added six goals in the title game while All-American junior midfielder Mason Quick netted five in the championship matchup.

“Being the last team left at the end of May was an expectation for our team since we first started workouts,” Neilson said.

“Our coaches used it as motivation and a standard for practices—always measuring us up to how a No. 1 team should act and what that meant for us. We had the weight of being an undefeated team at the top of the list every week, and we loved it. We got used to it and knew that for us, it should be normal.

When the game was finished and we got on the bus back home, we knew we had done it and there was no better feeling. We had done it all for each other.”

Ika said his team was “very focused and held themselves accountable” all year, battling through injuries to key players to score nearly 19 points a game while allowing less than five. “They focus on the little things and want to be great,” he said. “That translates into how they practice and the goals they set for themselves.”

Quick, who scored 105 goals this season, said it was particularly “amazing” to win state this season after the spring sports shutdown a year ago. “It’s what we’ve been working for all year,” he said. “We put selflessness over selfishness and were able to have the dog pile at the end of the year because of that.”

At state, the first-seeded CCHS squad beat Skyline 17-4, American Fork 18-8 and Olympus 17-3 to reach the final game.

Throughout the season, Corner Canyon outscored its opponents 415 to 97, winning its 22 games in dominating fashion.

All-American goalie Ayden Santi said the team chemistry the Chargers have built over several years “makes things a lot smoother on the field with belief and trust in each other” while First Team All-State junior midfielder Blaze DeGracie said the key was “unselfish play.”

“We knew we just had to play our game and play as a team and that everything would fall into place,” DeGracie said. “This team was something else. It was a great accomplishment for our team and sets us off good to go win another one next year.”

Ika was assisted on the coaching staff by Walker Bateman, Jeff Brzoska, Chase Caruso, Elias Fairman, Tallyn Goldman, Bray Hallman, John Holmes, Jeff King, David Michaeli, Garrett Michaeli, Josh Stout and Parker Tolman.

“We worked our hardest for our coaches,” Neilson said. “We knew what they put into it and we felt winning [state] was the only way we could show our appreciation and give just a small amount back. We owe everything to them and that was our motivation.”

“The boys dedicated this year to our 2020 team that wasn’t able to finish the year,” Ika said. “They were the catalyst behind everything we did this year. They got the boys focused and showed them how to lead. The boys did a fantastic job picking up where the 2020 class left off.” l

Kids, teens in Draper Historic Theatre’s Youth Council stage Disney’s ‘The Lion King Jr.’

embers of the Draper Historic Theatre Youth Council are getting hands-on experience in the art of theater behind the scenes in this month’s production of Disney’s “The Lion King Jr.” Aided by adult mentors from the board of Draper Historic Theatre, the teens are directing, stage managing, choreographing and building the puppet-like costumes for their own special take on the Disney classic.

Draper Historic Theatre has had a Youth Council on and off for the past 15 years. The theater’s board members work closely with the Youth Council members on shows to help the kids keep all the moving components of a theatrical production on track. “‘The Lion King’ is a really big production. We knew it would be a popular show,” said co-director and Youth Council member Sasha Southwick. “When we need help, we get it.”

Sasha explained that their production of “The Lion King Jr.” has more music than the classic Disney animated film but is also different from the Broadway musical version.

“We’re trying to make it our own,” she said.

Her twin brother, Roman, is co-directing.

“We wanted to do a bit of both, a mix of the movie and the stage show, so older people and younger people will enjoy it,” Roman said. “It has some darker themes but we’re trying to make it more lighthearted for littler kids. It’s definitely a show for everyone.”

The twins, who attend classes at Alta High School, have backgrounds in acting and dance but have enjoyed directing. “The best thing about being a director is seeing your ideas come to life but also seeing how the actors grow in the course of the production,” Roman observed.

“The Lion King Jr.” has many opportunities for its young cast to spread their wings.

Learning how to manipulate the puppets and move like animals while singing and acting will be a new and unique experience for the actors. Sasha Southwick commended them for their hard work. “The cast is really, really great,” she said. “We have a great group of kids.”

Like many productions at Draper Historic Theatre, “The Lion King Jr.” is double-cast.

Two of the actors playing lead roles are performing double-duty in both casts.

Gabe Alger, a sophomore at Corner Canyon High School, is playing the villainous Scar in one cast and Simba as an adult in the other. “The biggest challenge is memorizing all the lines,” Alger said. “When you’re playing a part, you have to really know the character to impersonate them.”

He feels that while Scar is the villain, he has figured out the character’s motivations.

“Scar feels like an outcast,” Alger explained.

“But at the end of the day, he just wants power for the sake of power.”

Brad Green, a senior at Alta High School, has taken on the role of Scar in one cast and plays Mufasa in the other. “I like playing Scar more because he’s a bigger character,” Green said. “I like playing the bad guy. It’s kind of fun getting into that mindset.”

At the same time, he enjoys the song he gets to perform as Mufasa. “It’s a pretty song,” Green said. “It’s a lot of fun. I love doing theater!”

Fun and friendship is what making theater is all about for many in the cast. Chloe

Norris, who plays the laidback meerkat, Timon, said, “I like the community. Once you’re in theater you always have a friend— even if you’ve only talked to them like once!”

Friendship is a major theme of the show itself. Some of the teens have found other meanings in “The Lion King Jr.” as well. “I think the theme is ‘never give up on yourself,’” Sasha Southwick said.

Green summed up his take on the show’s message. “Don’t think bad of yourself because of what you did in the past,” he said, referring to the lion Simba who tries to run away from his past mistakes. “You have to

look at the future and make something of yourself. Don’t let the past define you.”

Senator says past policies no longer work as West gets drier and fires are more prevalent

emperatures soared as Sen. Mitt Romney visited Draper June 18 to announce his bill to establish a commission to conduct a national review of wildfire policy. City officials, firefighters, police and state forestry representatives joined Romney and his staff for the event.

Looking out at the hills and green trees surrounding the Little Valley Trailhead, the location of his announcement, the senator commented, “It doesn’t look like a city, it looks like wildland. It’s a spectacular view.”

One year prior, and just up the road from where Romney made his announcement, a wildfire sparked by fireworks led to a SunCrest neighborhood being evacuated. Several hundred acres burned after strong winds pushed the “Traverse Fire” north from where it started in Utah County last June. Those burn scars were not visible from where the senator stood, but Draper Mayor Troy Walker and the firefighters at the event remember it clearly. “This is the time of year that I get the most stressed out…it just takes a spark,” Walker said.

Jamie Barnes is Acting Director of the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. “The issues are real and unprecedented…addressing mitigation and prevention is a priority,” she said, noting that 85% of fires are human caused and challenging decisions need to be made on all levels.

“The entire state is the driest it’s been since 1895. Local leaders want to make sure they have a seat at the table…to make sure they don’t become catastrophic disasters,” Walker said as he introduced Romney.

The senator’s press release announcing the bill states that, for more than 100 years, the federal government has partnered with states to suppress wildfires, but it’s been more than a decade since congress required those federal agencies to evaluate whether its firefighting strategies are working. “The American West is facing unprecedented wildland fire activity after decades of poor forest management, increased fuel load, and a hotter and drier climate. Current federal wildland fire policy is a patchwork of legislation and agency guidance across departments and jurisdictions, further complicated by mixed land ownership. This bill would require a review of the nation’s wildland firefighting strategies…by a commission made up of the nation’s top experts, including state and local stakeholder,” the press release states.

The proposal is for a commission comprised of 28 members, 11 federal and

17 nonfederal stakeholders, with preference given to representation from communities and states that have had at least one FEMA Fire Management Assistance incident or a major disaster declaration for fire in the last five years.

Romney spoke of ideas such as long-term contracts with loggers to alleviate what he said are forests filled with dead wood in state and national forests, otherwise that dead wood is fuel for fires.

He wants to see more firefighting aircraft located in states that are at high fire risk so they’re ready to go, rather than having delays in getting equipment from the federal government or obtaining aircraft from other states. He wants the commission to find ways to limit regulations so the need for fire mitigation doesn’t get held up by red tape.

“I’ve heard of a desire for controlled burn, but by the time they get the permits, the rain is gone and major fire danger doesn’t allow for that. We keep seeing bigger fires, lives lost, structures lost. We keep doing things the way we’ve done in the past…that doesn’t make a lot of sense,” the senator said.

Joining Romney (R-UT) in crafting the bill are Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Rep. John Curtis (R-UT). Romney said there’s recognition on both sides of the aisle that the planet is getting hotter, though some attribute it to human-caused climate change while others say it’s a natural cycle for the Earth. “I hope it’s caused by humans because, if not, there’s nothing we can do about it. We have to change the practices of the whole world,” Romney said.

He’s been in the firefighting business for 27 years. He thinks a fresh look at current federal policies is much needed. “I would hope the fire service would have a seat at the table to make sure experiences we’re seeing on the front lines are being communicated to the committee. Without input from those people at the front lines, it loses the effectiveness of looking at the policy and how we apply that policy currently,” he said.

Smith said the allocation of resources is becoming more challenging as fires have increased in the West, causing air resources to become scarce and having to be re-assigned from one incident to another. That obstacle, combined with urban sprawl that’s led to more buildings and homes in wildland/urban interface areas, makes it all the more difficult for people in his profession. “All over the West, we have a significant amount of residents that are sitting in that identified risk area, more than ever before. That creates more challenges for firefighters. Not only do we have higher frequency and intensity of these types of fires, we have more life and property at risk than we ever have, and that exacerbates the whole problem.”

Beehive ranked best in Utah, Corner Canyon at No. 12

T

his spring, Beehive Science and Technology Academy burst into the top rankings at No. 1 amongst top-ranked Utah high schools by U.S. News & World Report.

Last year, it wasn’t in the top 10.

Nationwide, Beehive Academy was ranked in the 98th percentile of all U.S. high schools, ranking 244 out of 17,857.

For math and reading performance, Beehive ranked No. 1 in both the U.S. and Utah.

“More than 60% of our students participate in the AP program,” Beehive Science and Technology Academy Principal Hanifi Oguz said. “And 57% of our students have already earned college credit by passing one or more AP exams. The U.S. News ranking is a testament to our exceptional faculty and administration, and demonstrates our commitment to academic excellence.”

Other area schools placing in the top 20 include Skyline High in Millcreek ranked fourth; American Preparatory Academy-Draper campus #3, seventh; Academy for Math, Engineering and Science in Murray, eighth; Itineris Early College High, West Jordan, 10th; Corner Canyon High, Draper, 12th; Brighton High, Cottonwood Heights, 14th; and Olympus High, Holladay, 18th.

U.S. News & World Report reviewed about 24,000 U.S. public high schools of which 162 Utah schools were ranked. Utah students needed to earn a minimum of 24 credits, including at least one applied or advanced language arts credit through a class such as debate or journalism, according to the Utah State Board of Education.

The top-ranking high schools had students who demonstrated “outstanding outcomes above expectations in math and reading state assessments, earned qualifying scores in an array of college-level exams, and graduated in high proportions.”

The rankings also looked at college readiness, underserved student performance and college curriculum breadth.

The top-ranked Beehive Science and Technology Academy was tied for second in the state with its math and reading proficiency rank, and 96% of the students graduate.

The charter school enrolls 130 students, grades six through 12, for a student to teacher ratio of 17:1. According to the report, 39% of the students are rated as economically disadvantaged, 38% of students state they’re of minority diversity and 35% are female. The school is eligible for Title I funding.

Beehive also is designated by the Utah State Board of Education and the STEM Action Center as a STEM Platinum School and is recognized as an Apple Dis-

tinguished School. The College Board also awarded Beehive the National AP Female Diversity Award for Computer Science.

Skyline ranks 623rd nationally, with its top-ranking factors being second in college readiness and third in college curriculum breath. Of the 2,044 students at the public high school, 70% took at least one AP exam and 57% passed. Ninety-four percent graduate.

The student body composition is primarily white, with only 16% stating minority diversity and 10% being economically disadvantaged. Fifty-two percent are female.

American Preparatory Academy Draper #3 has a participation rate of Advanced Placement exams at 80%, with 60% passing at least one exam. Eighty-eight percent of the students graduate.

With a student body of 246, 40% are identified as minorities and 19% as economically disadvantaged. The male to female ratio is 50:50. The charter school serves students between seventh and 12th grades and ranked first in college readiness and college curriculum breath for the state.

Nationally, it ranks 968th.

AMES, with an enrollment of 484, has a 95% graduation rate. Nationally, it ranks 1,120th. The ninth- though 12th-grade Title I charter school had 65% of the students take at least one AP exam, with 34% passing. Fifty-three percent of the students are identified as minorities, 31% of them are economically disadvantaged. The male to female ratio is 50:50.

Itineris has an enrollment of 370, with 96% graduating. The charter school serves 10th through 12th grade, with 45% identified as minority and 27% as economically disadvantaged. Fifty-one percent are female students. The school is eligible for Title I funding. Nationally, it ranks 1,263rd.

Corner Canyon has a 62% participation rate in AP coursework and exams, with a 49% passing. Ninety-five percent of the students graduate. Of the 2,022 students, 17% are identified as minorities, 8% as economically disadvantaged, and 47% are female.

Fifty-eight percent of Brighton’s 1,921 students took at least one AP exam, with 50% passing. Ninety-three percent of the students graduate. Eighteen percent are identified as minority, 14% are economically disadvantaged, and 47% are female.

Ninety-one percent of Olympus High students graduate. Forty percent take at least one AP exam, with 32% passing. The student body composition includes 17% minority, 21% economically disadvantaged, and 51% female. l

Record-setting sprinters lead CCHS boys to state track title

C

orner Canyon High’s Cody Hagen, Noah Kjar and Harrison Taggart have been champions on the football field for the past three seasons and this spring the star athletes demonstrated the same excellence on the track.

Hagen won the 100 and 200 meter races at the 6A state track and field championships May 18 at Davis High School with Taggart coming in second in both events with Kjar placing sixth and fourth, respectively.

“No Utah team in history had three sprinters break 11 seconds in the 100 meters and 22 seconds in the 200 meters before,” said head coach Devin Moody. “These three are pretty special. They were the energy of our team. We built around what they were doing and they were so consistently good.”

“Winning the 100 and 200 was a highlight for me,” Hagen said. “That’s been my top goal since the beginning of the season.

There are so many great runners in these events and you know you need to be at your best.”

“I had a lot of fun taking one-two with Cody,” Taggart said. “It was definitely what we were looking for.”

The trio’s top placements helped the Chargers win the boys state track title, a feat that was expected last season but unable to be realized amid Covid cancellations.

“We felt we could compete for the title, but you can’t fully gauge where you stand statewide until the last week or so,” Moody said. “So, we simply focused on doing what we could and only worrying about ourselves. We came in with confidence and felt like we were competing for two teams—this year’s and last year’s. It was a good feeling to do it for both groups.”

“State was awesome,” Hagen said.

“It’s so great to be there with all the top athletes in the state. It’s a cool day to see the benefit of all the work we have put in as a team. The individual awards mean a lot, but to win as a team means more to me.

So many guys stepped up and contributed on the team. I’m lucky to be part of a great team with the best coaches who are incredible and prepared us well.”

“It was pretty rewarding to win state,” Noah Kjar said. “We were a shoo-in last season and wanted it so bad for last year’s team.”

The 4x100 relay lineup of Hagen, Noah Kjar, Taggart, Cody Strong, Aiden McDonald and Tate Kjar also placed first and solidified their spot in the top-three nationally in 2021 while setting a Utah state record in the event.

“I ran the second leg and handed it off to my brother Tate for the third leg in the finals,” Noah Kjar said. “It was pretty cool to be under the lights and have that moment with Tate and my team.”

“This race is my favorite since it involves close friends of mine,” Hagen said.

“We have trained together for many years so it was neat to win and set the state record.”

Also taking first at state for CCHS was the 4x800 relay team of Jackson Henstrom, Carter Cutting, Gannon Jensen, Jake Orr, Noah Hanson and Eli Kimball, just edging out Syracuse for the top spot. “It was all on Jake’s shoulders as our anchor and he handled the pressure as a great captain and team leader,” Moody said.

Moody credited coaches Eric Kjar and Robert Pickering for their coaching and training of the sprints group.

Other top placers for the Chargers at the state championships were Orr (second, 800 meters), the 4x400 relay team of Cutting, Noah Hanson, Noah Kjar, Tate Kjar, Orr and Cody Strong (third), Luke Sampson (fifth, shot put) and Carter Welling— who placed third in the high jump, clearing 6-feet-8-inches, after trying out the sport just weeks before.

On the girls side, Paje Rasmussen placed third in the 200 meters and fourth in the 100 meters.

“Paje is the embodiment of sports,” Moody said. “She’s had multiple setbacks with two knee surgeries and has had to go through a refocusing and resetting process twice. It has been inspiring to watch.”

Other All-State finishers for the Chargers were Emma Hamblin (fifth, pole vault) and the 4x400 relay team of Paris Rasmussen, Addie Kjar, Chesney White, Maryn Granger, Maddie Taggart and Skye Meters (eighth).

Draper Days marks its 20th anniversary with rodeo and family activities

D

raper Days is back! The annual celebration of Draper’s community spirit and western pioneer heritage will mark its 20th anniversary this month with a rodeo, concert and movie night and a car show. Draper Nights returns as well with three whole nights of musical performances followed by fireworks displays.

Doug Dredge, chair of Draper Days, acknowledged that this year’s events will be different from years past.

“The difference this year is that we’re not doing any day activities. No parade or 5K run, no pickleball tournament or Scales and Tails,” Dredge explained.

Vendor tents will also be missing from Draper Days this year.

The pandemic, which forced the cancellation of last year’s Draper Days, has had an impact on the scope of this year’s events and complicated the planning process. “We had to wait until mass gathering restrictions were lifted,” explained LaVar Christensen, event manager and board member of the Draper Community Foundation.

Planning for Draper Days and the Draper Nights concerts usually begins as early as January. At that time last winter, it was impossible to envision what a large-scale summer event might even look like.

Organizers are accentuating the positive after a challenging year. Each event that comprises this year’s Draper Days will be “an opportunity to enjoy a night out with family, an opportunity to enjoy Draper and our incredible scenery,” Dredge said.

The Draper Days Rodeo is returning with all of its usual events but will include a special presentation this year.

“It’s our 20th year anniversary,” rodeo chairperson Katie Ovard-Smith said.

“We will be bringing back all past rodeo queens on Saturday night. We’re celebrating the rodeo coming back as well as honoring the committee.”

Because of delays in planning due to the pandemic, there will be no new rodeo queen or attendants this year. “We got the OK [to have the rodeo] too late,” Ovard-Smith said. Aside from that, the main rodeo events will look much the same as they have in years past.

Members of the Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association will participate in bareback and saddle bronc riding, calf roping, team roping, barrel racing and bull riding. Austin Tingley, otherwise known as the Green Hat Clown, will display his trick riding

skills for the pre-rodeo entertainment.

The Draper Days Rodeo will take place July 9 and 10 at the Andy Ballard Arena, 1600 East Highland Drive. The pre-rodeo entertainment begins at 7:30 p.m. and the rodeo starts at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for kids under 12.

On the evening of Thursday, July 15, folks can enjoy a free concert at Draper Amphitheater by the band Exit Strategy, followed by a showing of Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon.”

Steve Morton, bass player and lead singer for Exit Strategy said that the band is looking forward to Draper Days.

“It ought to be a fun gig,” he said. “Our signature thing is that our music makes people want to get up and dance.” The audience at Draper Amphitheater will be encouraged to move and groove.

The three members of Exit Strategy have been playing together for 15 years. Self-described “software nerds,” they met at work and once won Fortune magazine’s “Battle of the Corporate Bands” contest. Drummer Brad Wilson is a resident of Draper while Morton and lead guitarist Tom Rhoton live in Utah country.

Exit Strategy’s repertoire includes covers by Bruno Mars, Blink 182, the Killers, Earth, Wind & Fire and The Weekend. When choosing songs to play, “the criteria for us is that it makes people want to move,” Morton said.

The concert is appropriate for all ages.

The recent Disney film, “Raya and the Last Dragon,” will be shown after the concert. The PG-rated animated movie tells the story of a young warrior in a mythical land who must find the dragon that can save her people from a threatening race of monsters.

The concert and movie night will begin at 8 p.m. and run until approximately 11:15 p.m. Draper Amphitheater is located at 944 East Vestry Road in Draper.

The final event planned for Draper Days will be a free car show to be held at Draper City Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 17. Organized

by JC Hackett, the event will showcase dozens of vintage and collectible automobiles. Food vendors will be present at the car show. Draper City Park is located at 12500 S. 1300 East.

Willow Canyon second-grader wins national Reflections, wants to win ‘America’s Got Talent’

A

Willow Canyon second-grader has big dreams.

“I want to be on ‘America’s Got Talent’ so badly. I hope to get the Golden Buzzer when I go.”

Don’t count out India Boyé to accomplish that goal. The second-grader recently won the national Reflections award in music for her entry, “Indi-rap;” it was her first time entering the PTA contest that has more than 300,000 students in pre-K through grade 12 annually create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme.

“My dad said (maybe I can be on it) when I’m older,” she added about the TV show that scouts for talent.

Her dad, Alex Boyé, is an accomplished British-American musician of his own right and performed on the show, but India wrote and performed this song on her own; it’s a rap about herself and her family.

“I made this song actually up and it was really fun. It’s what my whole life is about. It says my mom is white and my dad is brown, so I might talk to you about my family and how my life and everything like that and I’m doing compliments and I matter because I matter,” she said, tying the song into the Reflections theme: “I matter because….” “I just love making stuff up. It’s really fun to make up a song.”

Her mother, Julie, who also sings in a harmony group, adds: “India always beatboxes around the house. She raps all the time with things on YouTube and things she sees on, well, just bloggers she watches and commercials she hears.

She loves the rhyme and makes harmony. It’s a little skill that not many her age have. This girl is a spitfire and has a huge personality and is just not afraid to talk about it.”

India wasn’t alone in her talent as one brother entered visual art and another made a film to enter in the school Reflections contest. However, India is the only Willow Canyon state winner, her principal Marilyn Williams said.

“We had a celebration in her class; her parents participated virtually,” Williams said. “Our PTA gave her flowers, a treat and a trophy. She performed the rap for us in class when we were celebrating. It’s a very inspirational rap about equity and family—amazing insight for a second-grade student. We are very proud of India.”

India said she was excited, yet uneasy about performing her song in front of her class.

“It was kind of embarrassing, but really fun. It was scary; I was just kind of nervous. I’ve only done it in front of my grandpa and grandma and my family before,” she said, adding, “But I sing it every day.”

However, she has cherished her award.

“It’s my first trophy. I just think what happy memories it’s given me, and I was like, ‘oh my gosh’ when they came in to school and everything was so much fun,” India said.

She also was honored in the Old Dome Meeting Hall in Riverton on May 11 along with other state award winners.

Along with India, Canyons School District had several students honored at state including Hillcrest High’s Haley Fries, who won the photography category and Amber Parker, who received an honorable mention for literature; Corner Canyon’s Isablla Pulley, who received an award of merit in photography; Brighton High’s Andrew Jensen received an honorable mention for 3D art; Butler Middle’s Makella Wright, who received an award of merit for dance; Draper Park’s Max Stephens, who received an honorable mention for music and Asia Olcott, who received an award of merit for visual arts and for 3D art; Midvale Middle’s Ava Townsend who received an award of merit for visual arts; Altara Elementary’s Nazareth Diaz received an honorable men-

tion for dance; Quail Hollow’s Evelyn Boardman received an honorable mention for music; Butler Elementary’s Lydia Jensen received an honorable mention for photography and Dakota Brown received an honorable mention for 3D art; Brookwood’s Judd Pohlman received an award of merit for 3D art; Oak Hollow’s Adalyn Olcott received an honorable mention for 3D art; Lone Peak’s Sawyer Arnold received an award of merit for visual arts; and Sunrise’s Scarlett De Agostini received an honorable mention for visual arts.

PTA Region 17 director Terri Francis said that typically Canyons District does well in Reflections.

“I’m always extremely impressed with the originality of ideas students come up with that tie into the theme,” she said. “We have some pretty talented kids, and the number of entries was 19% higher than usual. I think the online submission made it easier for students to do it on their own and families to submit them.”

Haley’s state-winning photograph is of a row of green chrysalises, with one black, ready to emerge into a butterfly, she said.

The Hillcrest High student compared that chrysalis with herself: “There was only one and that only one is of me.”

Haley said that she and her mother were walking around a garden when she saw it and thought it would make a good Reflections entry.

“I really like to play with perspective in my photo and I

saw it and I was like, that would be a really good photo and a really good representation,” she said.

This was Haley’s first time entering Reflections; she studied online this past year. It was through a PTA email as well as the school website posting results that she found out that she won.

“I think it’s crazy; I didn’t think I’d make it this far,” she said. “It was like really unexpected.”

India placed her state trophy alongside some medals she received in gymnastics—and now, her silver medal for winning national Reflections.

For winning nationals, she also will receive a certificate, a $200 Young Artist Scholarship, and have her work featured in the traveling exhibition.

Singing for a talent show isn’t the only thing India wants to do so maybe television baking contestants should be wary.

“I want to bake at my house, but not actually as a job— and I want to sing,” she said.

Then, she continued.

“I’m wanting to do Reflections again for sure. I really like to sing, and I do it a lot. I’m wanting to do another rap.

My dad, I like doing harmonies with him too,” India said, adding that she may ask him to record with her next as they recently sang a song together. “I don’t know what it’s called, but it goes: ‘We like to cherish these days.’” l

Miss Draper title is about purpose, scholarship and poise

T

he Draper City Council opened their doors to the public for the first time in more than a year for the purpose of welcoming royalty as the new Miss Draper and her attendants were crowned. Last year’s Miss Draper, Elle Stoker, addressed the crowd and reflected on her reign along with her attendants, Cece Burridge and Madison Gastelo.

“I feel so lucky, I’ve gotten to have the most wonderful year ever. This crown represents scholarship, leadership, service and poise. Thank you for helping me become my best self,” Stoker said. Her platform involved child custody and abuse allegations, a topic on which she’d written a bill and presented to the Governor’s office as a sophomore. Stoker also founded the nonprofit “Children’s Voice Project” and served as mayor of the Draper Mayor’s Youth Council. “This scholarship and program has really rocket-launched my dreams,” Stoker said.

Mandi Brady and her mom, Carol Brady, are both former Miss Drapers who now volunteer their time with the scholarship program. Carol held the title in 1972 and Mandi in 1998. Mandi became chair of the program in 2019, at which point she set out to recreate it. It was part of the Miss American pageant system in the past, but it isn’t any longer. “It went from a beauty pageant to what people can do. I know these

girls will make a difference,” Mandi said.

“It changed dramatically for the better…it is now based on merit, individual goals and ambitions,” Mayor Troy Walker said.

Grace Mead, daughter of Eric and Stephanie Mead, was crowned the new Miss Draper. Mead is a 4.0 student who takes AP and honors level classes, including college-level Chinese. She’ll be a senior at Corner Canyon High School in the fall and her community service initiative is her own creation called “Bright Futures Begin with STEM.” It’s a social media campaign and a website she personally programmed to raise awareness about STEM resources and to spark interest in STEM topics at an early age for children.

“My inspiration came when I was in seventh grade. We had a guest speaker in one of my classes and she was a biomedical engineer.

Her message inspired me so much that day that I wanted that to become my career path.

What I would love to do is focus on prosthetics and advancement in that field so that anyone who has lost a limb can feel like they can still accomplish their dreams,” she said.

Mead was recognized in 2018 with a national STEM Excellence award from Century Link and the NBA. At the state level, Mead was selected in 2019 as the first high

Mead complimented her predecessor, Stoker. “She’s such a great example to me.

I’m really blessed that she passed the crown on to me and that I have such a great role model in my life.”

Just one month into her new role, Mead has put together a three-fold action plan for the year ahead. First, she wants to fulfill all the duties assigned to Miss Draper. Second, she has committed to partnering with a different community service organization each month of her reign, beginning in July. Third, she’ll be promoting her Bright Futures Begin with STEM by hosting a bracelet-making activity for students to teach them about DNA. “What I love about this activity is that it shows students how fun science can be and shares a message about how we can embrace our differences and love ourselves,” she said.

Kiara D’Amico, daughter of Debi and Dino D’Amico, was chosen First Attendant for 2021. D’Amico is a student at Utah State University studying biology, ecology and biodiversity. The focus of her initiative is chronic illness. She’s the president and founder of the

USUSA Service Animal Club and fundraising chair for Golden Healer Service Dogs. She was a valedictorian of Corner Canyon High School and an AP Scholar with Distinction.

Emily Moffat, daughter of Ryan and Lindsey Moffat, was chosen Second Attendant with a focus on suicide awareness and prevention. A recent graduate of Corner Canyon High School, Moffat will pursue a bachelor’s of science in nursing at BYU. She was an honor roll student all four years of her high school career and also team captain of the CCHS Varsity Women’s Lacrosse Team and a member of the Draper Mayor’s Youth Council.

Mead hopes to help D’Amico and Moffat with their service initiatives while simultaneously working on her own, and she welcomed anyone from the community who wants to assist them in their endeavors to reach out. She also said she and her attendants are open to any activities in the community that they could be a part of.

“As Miss Draper, I want to continue to build out my service initiative so people in our community can feel inspired to follow their dreams and interests just like that biomedical engineer did for me,” Mead said. l

Utah Food Bank to distribute 200,000 meals this summer

hat fits in a 10-inch by 8-inch by 7-inch box?

If you said 14 meals for a Utah child, you would be right.

As part of their Summer Food Service program, the Utah Food Bank provides meal boxes to individuals 18 and younger each week throughout Utah. The boxes are free and are design for one person for seven days— seven breakfasts and seven dinners. If a family has four children, they get four boxes.

Each box includes a sample menu. For example, breakfast one is a cereal bowl and regular applesauce. For dinner two, the menu is cheddar cheese cup, sunflower kernels, MJM Pizza Crackers, flavored applesauce and vegetable juice. Other items on the menu are Pop-Tarts, barbecue chicken salad, breakfast bar, Jack Link’s Original Chicken Tender Bites, and beef sticks. The kids are given 14 small cartons of milk with their box.

These boxes are distributed in eight Utah counties, including Salt Lake County.

Salt Lake County

In Salt Lake County, the Utah Food Bank provides hot meals at various locations Monday through Friday. The meals are prepared in the Utah Food Bank kitchen and delivered in electric hot boxes, which keep the food warm for up to four hours.

The Utah Food Bank can provide these 200,000 meals because they are partnering with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This partnership extends the Kids Café program throughout the summer. The 200,000 meals are served at 40 sites across the state.

Some programs are open sites meaning first come, first served. Other sites are enrolled programs that have specific requirements.

There are 16 sites across the valley, including Boys & Girls Clubs, community centers and libraries. Libraries are included because the Utah Food Bank found that many children spend their days at the library but never had food.

The Utah Food Bank partners with 205 agencies across the state. In 2020, they distributed 62.5 million pounds of food at no cost to the receivers or the agencies. Utah Food Bank is the largest food distributor in the state.

Since 1904, the Utah Food Bank has tried to learn more efficient ways to obtain products and meet the needs of the people of Utah.

With the increase in the refugee population, the Utah Food Bank has learned how to meet

Utah Food Bank does not consider itself a transportation company nor a human need company.

“We just quietly go about feeding kids,” Bott said.

Bott pointed out that the Utah Food Bank always needs food, time and money.

She also said if a person ever needs help, call 211 or go to the Utah Food Bank website.

Grocery Rescue program

The Grocery Rescuer program is a partnership with 270 grocery retailers. Retailers provide food that is nearing the expiration date but is still healthy and wholesome to eat.

Refrigerated trucks provided by the Utah Food Bank and partner agencies operate six days a week throughout the state, picking up the food donations. The food goes directly to food pantries to be distributed within 24 hours.

The donations primarily are daily consumables, including fresh produce, dairy and meat. Without this program, such items would end up in the landfill. In 2020, 16 million pounds of food was distributed to help end hunger.

Walt May, a program director, offered a way anyone can help with this program. May suggested that they will give you the freshest meat or cheese when you go to the deli at the grocery store. This allows the retailer to freeze the older meat and cheese and donate it to the program.

T

he Utah economy continues to improve.

Job growth is accelerating, unemployment is dropping, and wages are increasing.

However, the emerging trend of inflation is causing some struggles in the economic recovery.

Inflation essentially describes the principle that prices rise over time. It’s actually good to have inflation; it encourages investment and overall growth. However, if inflation grows too much it erodes the value of cash and can cause asset bubbles, which then can crash.

An example of this is lumber prices, which nearly tripled in price from July 2020 to May 2021, but have dropped nearly 50% in the last few weeks.

Inflation has been increasing nationally and locally for the past few months. The national Consumer Price Index rose in May by 5% from a year before. This is the highest inflation since the summer of 2008. Prices regionally were also up significantly in May, increasing 4.7% over the past year.

A primary cause of this recent inflation is the economic reopening. A year ago, as the pandemic spread and as the economy shut down, demand for many goods and services evaporated. This caused prices for things like gasoline, hotel rooms, and airfare to collapse. With many people now returning to work and going on trips, demand has surged for these products. Gasoline prices alone are up 56.2% in the last 12 months, and the price of used cars and trucks has surged 29.7% over the same period. Airfares are up 24.1% in the last year and increased 12.2% in the last month.

The big question now is how long this high inflation will last. Is this a temporary surge or is it the beginning of a prolonged period of price pressures? No one knows for sure and this is a topic of intense debate. The Federal Reserve, which sets interest rates, has said they are concerned about unexpected high inflation but they want to wait and see what the future brings over the next several months before pulling back on monetary policy that encourages growth.

There are three mosquito abatement districts in Salt Lake County. Each of them serves their area, performing similar functions: Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement, Magna Mosquito Abatement, South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement.

“Mosquitos are definitely a nuisance,” Brian Hougaard, manager for South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District, said. “They have the potential to carry diseases.”

A mosquito abatement focuses heavily on mosquitos that carry West Nile Virus, a disease that can cause severe inflammation to the brain and spinal cord.

“We have 52 different trap sites, using three different types of traps. We use these traps not only to monitor the number of mosquitos in the area...we also use those to catch [and] test for West Nile virus,” Hougaard said.

Each district employs full-time, yearround experts, but then hires seasonal workers for the summer. The staff spends their time checking traps, testing mosquitoes for potential viruses and responding to resident calls.

Residents can call for an inspection.

They will inspect horse troughs, residential ponds, tree holes and catch basins.

If there are mosquito larvae, the district can put in mosquito fish, an aggressive eater of mosquitos, or briquettes that prevent larvae from hatching into adults. l

It’s been said that when we make plans, God laughs. Do you think that’s a silly giggle or a maniacal James Bond villain laugh?

The last few weeks brought a string of first-world irritations that felt like a game of Whac-a-Mole. I hit one problem and another one popped up. I pound that problem but end up hitting myself in the face with a rubber mallet. I can hear God LOLing from here.

Despite our daily devotion to it, our TV stopped working. We shook the remote and pushed buttons as hard as we could, but there was still no picture. Just a dark, mocking abyss.

We decided to run away from our responsibilities by driving to Idaho and checking-in at an Airbnb. (The room was nice, but the bed was shaped like a taco. I slept on the couch so I didn’t roll over in the night and suffocate my spouse.)

Every 50 years, my husband likes to visit Yellowstone, so we left our Airbnb and drove to the national park to snap pictures of the bison, tiptoe around the geysers and marvel at the wondrous number of people who had the same idea. #HelloCOVID After getting lost in Yellowstone and stopping for Mexican food so we didn’t starve to death, we crossed the Teton Pass just as the sun was setting. Deer lined the road, waiting for the right moment to lunge in front of our car. We’d see their eyes glow-

ing in the dark, then hit the brakes before driving on. It took us 245 years to get back to our Airbnb.

The drive back to Salt Lake the next day was pleasant, except when I had to give my husband the silent treatment because he wouldn’t take me to the Potato Museum (#PotatoIceCream). After we crossed back into Utah, the truck in front of us kicked up a rock that hit the car’s windshield, leaving an extensive and expensive crack across the glass.

Used to be, when you broke a windshield, you’d call the junkyard and they’d take a windshield out of a car in their backyard to replace the broken one. Today’s windshield has monitors, antenna and tracking devices, so it’s worth half-a-million dollars, according to the windshield repair shop.

Why hasn’t Elon Musk created self-healing windshield glass?

We made it back home, picked up the dog and gave everyone their Yellowstone golf balls and Idaho potholders. I looked forward to a nice hot shower but (joke’s on us) the hot water heater stopped working and was chuckling with God and the TV. They all had a good laugh together.

We forked out more cash so we could have hot water, collapsed into our non-taco bed and slept.

A few days later, my husband said, “We have a gas leak in the basement.” It took me a minute to understand what he was saying because he was so calm. My husband is notoriously terrible under stress.

“Why are we still in the house?” I asked.

“Where else would we be?” He responded.

“Not in a house that could explode if we make toast.”

We hustled everyone to the neighbor’s lawn until the gas company gave us the okay.

The water heater had been installed incorrectly but our house wasn’t going to blow up. Today, at least.

I rarely look at the dark side of life and by the end of the week I was chortling right along with God, the TV and the water heater. Sometimes, LOLing is the only thing you can do.

ll-American junior attacker Jon King, who led the nation in scoring with 112 goals this season, scored four goals to lead the undefeated Corner Canyon boys lacrosse team to the Division A state championship over defending state champion Park City 20-13 on May 28 at Park City High School.

“This is a great accomplishment and they did it in style,” said head coach Aaron Ika. “The boys were the favorites going into the year and they beat the reigning state champions by 10 and 7 to prove it.”

“I’m super excited about winning the first sanctioned state championship,” said King, who will play for St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia in 2022.

The Chargers trailed at halftime of the title game for the first time all season, but came out and scored five straight goals to take control of the game.

“When we were losing at half all we had to do was really call all the guys together and calm down,” King said. “We know how good we were as a team. All we had to do was go out on the field and show it, and that’s what we did. We were a different team in that second half; we played like we knew how to. Everyone on the team stepped up and played really well in that second half. I really think we put the West Coast on notice about how good we can be all season long.”
