eff Stenquist and Suzanne Harrison represented Draper in the 2022 Utah Legislative session and both have been affected by the redistricting that happens as a result of the census every 10 years. Stenquist will run to represent Draper in the newly created District 46 and Harrison announced her campaign for the Salt Lake County Council. Both will be working on legislative issues in their current districts through the end of 2022 while simultaneously campaigning.

Stenquist has been District 51 representative for four years. He was first elected in 2018 and again in 2020. Prior to that, he spent 12 years on Draper’s city council. Stenquist explained that District 51 encompasses about 85% of Draper with the exception of the northeast corner (east of the Pioneer Road roundabout) and the Utah County side of SunCrest. Redistricting puts him in District 46 which now includes that northeast corner of Draper and follows the Draper/Sandy boundary from the east up to 300 East, all of South Mountain, the prison property, and now half of Bluffdale’s population. Stenquist said west of 300 East and north of Bangerter, such as the Galena Hills and aquarium areas, are now in the same district as Riverton. Stenquist is a member of the Republican party and works as a director of software engineering.

PE clubs return to Channing Hall

S

eventy or more Channing Hall elementary students come to school a good 20 minutes before the school day begins. They toss their backpacks aside and grab a rope and begin to climb.

These first through fifth graders are part of the climbing club, one of three PE clubs that started the year before COVID-19 hit and returned this spring after a two-year hiatus.

Students may traverse across the rock wall in their gym, go up and down in one section, or climb a rope and even swing on it, said PE specialist Janine Tanner, who developed the club time twice per week.

“The kids were wanting to do more, so they were always sad when we finished a unit,” she said. “I thought this was a way we can let those who enjoy those things do more.”

This spring, Tanner is offering three PE clubs, each one month long. March was climbing, April is jump rope and in May, cup stacking.

Weather permitting, Tanner hopes the jump rope club will be held on the playground so it can accommodate 100 club members. She also invites parents to teach double dutch and other tricks.

“We focus on skills, it could be jumping with a partner or we may work on solo jumping so they can work on those tricks, such as crisscross,” she said. “We jump to the beat and create a program, so they really have fun.”

The final club, cup stacking, is open to kindergartners as well as students to learn the method to build and take down cup towers.

“It is just amazingly fun, and we have hundreds of cups going at once in our gym,” Tanner said.

Before COVID-19, Channing Hall held its own school cup stacking tournament where students competed for trophies.

“We actually had a cup stacking champion come help organize it,” she said. “The kids were so excited. It’s a chance where all kids can be successful and have a wonderful time.”

“I introduced quidditch when I saw a bunch of kids reading Harry Potter,” she said. “There’s a good connection between chasing and accuracy, making a goal on offense and playing defense—I can teach a lot of things from there, and I love seeing them have fun and play.”

9 Square, a game where a ball is hit over a three-bythree structure occupied by nine students, is one where they can easily grab the equipment and begin playing on their own at recess. As a player gets out, another can come in.

“They love it. The kids love competing against the teachers or their friends,” she said.

Another continuous game Tanner has introduced is Pirates of the Caribbean, where students have to sink each other’s “ship.”

“I love continuous games where we can be active the whole time,” she said.

Another PE favorite is their mock-NASCAR races with wiggle cars; they first determine class winners before an overall champion.

“The kids scream for the person from their class, and it’s all very fun,” she said.

Tanner also has taught other skills such as juggling and playing jacks.

“I love to see their confidence grow. I tell them to try their very best and find things they enjoy. I like giving kids a variety so they can experience different things,” she said. “I teach them sportsmanship and how important it is to tell everybody they did a good job.”

Her classes are more than being physically active, she adds.

“I always tell kids what’s good for the body is good for the brain,” Tanner said. “They understand playing improves their judgment, their work ethic, making better choices. I teach mindfulness; I have them lay on the playground and it’s quiet all around. We look at the clouds and listen. I teach them they can take breaks to relieve their different stresses and anxiety.”

Tanner, a former college athlete, began teaching as a PE volunteer at her kids’ school when there wasn’t one.

After being a reading specialist at Channing Hall for 10 years, she became the PE specialist five years ago, a posi-

“I love teaching the kids and they inherently love playing,” she said. “We don’t have the time in PE to satisfy all of them, so through these clubs, we can do more whether it’s just so they can get more confident and work on specific skills or just to do more activities that they love.” l

Harrison was also elected in 2018 and also won re-election in 2020, representing District 32 which encompasses the northeast portion of Draper as well as Sandy and White City.

District 32 has been divided into four different districts as a result of redistricting. She resides in what will be District 46.

“A lot of people have said to me that even though they don’t live in District 32, I’m a person that represents their views and values. In wanting to continue to serve in my community, the next step was really clear in how I could have a bigger impact and focus on issues we’ve been working on such as air quality, healthy communities, increased access to mental health services, and government that’s accountable to the people and transparent. From my perspective, I feel I’ll be able to have more of an impact as one of nine on the county council rather than one of 104 legislators,” said Harrison, a member of the Democratic party and a medical doctor.

Stenquist considers his biggest victory of the 2022 session to be legislation that created a new oversight committee called The State Finance Review Commission. “This is a commission that will be made up of finance experts that will review state debt obligations and other financial transactions to make sure that we are following all regulations, but more importantly, making sure we’re looking at it from an affordability standpoint to protect the state’s AAA bond rating.

Very significantly, it also has financial oversight of the Point of the Mountain Land Use Authority, the Inland Port Authority, UTA, and Military Infrastructure Development Authority (MIDA) which is building a new resort by Deer Valley. All of those entities could be incurring billions of dollars in debt.

My bill would make sure we’re reviewing their financials so there’s nothing that could negatively impact the state’s credit rating. That’s worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the Utah taxpayers,” he said.

Another successful bill from Stenquist made additional changes to a bill he passed last year related to fetal alcohol syndrome. “I also uncovered a lot of other improvements I would like to make, everything having to do with how our alcohol revenue is spent….I see additional improvements I’d like to make for the upcoming year on how that money is managed and spent.”

Stenquist was the House sponsor of Senate Bill 66 having to do with e-bikes. He said the bill had a lot of problems at first, but he offered to help because he knows about e-bikes.

“I kind of count that as one of my victories. The final result was a bill that requires any local group that’s planning for building trails to take into account people with disabilities.”

Stenquist’s one disappointment from the session was a bill he’d worked on with Draper resident Mike Schlappi aimed at handicap parking spaces. It passed the House and the Senate, but after a change in the Senate, it had to come back to the House where it failed by just one vote. “Sometimes that happens, sometimes it takes multiple years to get an important piece of legislation through,” he said.

Harrison passed legislation to increase access to a diabetes prevention program for Medicaid patients (for whom the state is responsible for much of their healthcare costs). “This bill allows patients on Medicaid to have access to a yearlong lifestyle change course that dramatically decreases their risk of developing diabetes. It’s incredibly expensive to care for a patient with diabetes, so it’s in taxpayers’ interest to help them stay healthy. It also helps patients because diabetes increases risk of stroke, kidney disease, vision problems, heart attacks and early death. A lot of bills I passed had to do with helping our community be healthier,” Harrison said.

Another bill Harrison passed related to increasing the number of school nurses. “Ask any teacher or volunteer parent. They know our kids are coming to school with more issues in terms of physical and mental health. Having more

nurses is important for our kids to be able to stay in school and have our teachers focus on teaching.”

Harrison passed two other bills; one that helps veterans and other patients experiencing trauma have more success with treatment therapies through ear acupuncture. According to Harrison, it’s already used in Veterans Affairs hospitals throughout the country, but this bill will allow more people to get trained to offer the treatment. “I think it’s very special that more of our veterans will be able to have access to that program,” she said. Harrison’s other successful bill increases safety for patients receiving anesthesia through requirements for monitors and safety equipment.

She co-sponsored legislation to increase mental health services for police and first responders. “I feel it’s important that we take care of those people that are out there taking care of us,” she said. She also co-sponsored legislation to reduce emissions for rail transportation as well as legislation to increase access to optional all-day kindergarten.

Harrison’s air quality bill that would have offered a small incentive for people to purchase electric vehicles didn’t pass. “Too often, great air quality bills don’t pass in the Utah legislature because the super-majority of one-party ideology.

This is an area where I feel like we’ll be able to have more impact at the county council level with more of a political balance,” she said.

Harrison said she strives for bipartisanship. “Every bill I sponsored has had a Republican Senate sponsor because I believe in collaboration and bipartisanship, and I focus on issues that are common sense, common ground. I think the extremes on either side of the aisle are the ones that make the most noise, but I think most people are in the middle politically and want leaders to work together to solve problems.”

Harrison and Stenquist voted differently when the legislature took time the first week of the session to call for a vote to undo county mask mandates rather than letting the mandates exist for approximately two weeks longer.

Stenquist voted to overturn the mask mandates. He said the session starts slowly and he felt it didn’t take up a lot of time to tackle that issue. “I personally didn’t agree with mask mandates and the decision the county council had made. I know there were a lot of people in the House that thought

‘let the county council live with that decision’ and not take it up, but I knew if the House was going to take it up, I would vote to overturn it. It was something we’d put in that the legislature had the authority to override those, so I think it was appropriate we did that,” he said.

“I voted no on overturning the decision of the county councils because I believe in the authority of local government. That was an example of when local control and decisions should have been honored. That bill didn’t even have a public hearing or public input. Meanwhile, the local county councils had public input and came to a decision after hearing from local hospitals that were at a breaking point, and local emergency first responders who were having trouble staffing emergency services. We’re in a very different point now, but at that time, I felt the decisions local communities made were done after doing the work of listening to the people and experts on the ground. I didn’t feel the legislature should have swooped in and undermined that decision, especially for something that was a short-term decision,” Harrison said.

Harrison and Stenquist agree on the need for conservation efforts for the Great Salt Lake and were pleased with Speaker Brad Wilson’s leadership on the issue. Both representatives got an aerial view of the Great Salt Lake via a helicopter tour provided by the National Guard.

“It’s in crisis levels and now is the time to do that hard work to conserve water for a sustainable future. If the Great Salt Lake continues to decline in water levels, it’s going to have huge, negative impacts on our health because of toxic dust storms that will result in serious air pollution problems that will impact our health and our economy,” Harrison said.

Stenquist said, “I think there’s still time to save the Great Salt Lake. The changes we made this year aren’t everything, but we made some good steps in the right direction.” He mentioned the metering of secondary water and changing the incentive structure for water rights, particularly for agriculture.

“If a farmer or someone with water rights doesn’t use all the water they’re entitled to, they could lose those water rights, so they have an incentive to use all their water. We need to change that mentality and give them…a credit back for saving water. I think that’s really important.”l

Otter triplets and clouded leopard celebrate birthdays at Loveland Living Planet Aquarium

oveland Living Planet Aquarium invited guests to a series of birthdays at the animal sanctuary for Rhubarb, a clouded leopard as she celebrated her eighth birthday March 14 as well as a trio of otters: Oscar, Oliver and Otis on March 5.

Rhubarb arrived at Loveland Aquarium in May 2016 by way of Houston, Texas as part of a comprehensive species survival plan at the aquarium which is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Rhubarb was born in Denver, Colorado and eventually was paired with Koshi, a male clouded leopard. The pair were then placed together at Loveland Aquarium with the hopes of conserving the vulnerable species in captivity.

Laura Shipp, a keeper at the aquarium, says the leopard’s offspring can be part of a reintroduction program to help rise the low population of clouded leopards which is estimated to be around 5,500 in the wild.

“Having the leopards here contributes to our genetic library, to help rebuild the species if we needed to,” Shipp said. “Because they are not extinct in the wild yet, we can inspire people to save that environment that they live in and educate people about the need to save these animals.” U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services classifies clouded leopards as endangered.

According to Shipp, clouded leopards are elusive and hard to study in the wild.

The aquarium has replicated a wild setting for their habitats by utilizing enrichment programs by encouraging the animals to work for their food through stalking or using obstacles which requires them to use their natural skills. By using these methods, the animals are able to reinforce their natural instincts. “It has only been in the past 20 years

that we’ve been able to study their life habits,” Shipp said. “There’s so much we still don’t know about them.”

The aquarium answered questions from guests about the leopard and even had activities for kids so they can learn about what makes the clouded leopard so vulnerable.

One major factor is the leopard’s habitat, which is found in Southeast Asia. Conservationists encourage people to purchase only certified sustainable wood products that do not contribute to the destruction of rainforests. Another factor that affects the clouded leopard population is the human consumption of palm oil.

“The production of palm oil for use in food, cosmetics, and household products is causing a rapid loss of tropical rainforest,” an informative sign at the leopard’s habitat states. “Purchasing products made with sustainable palm oil can greatly reduce the impact on clouded leopard habitat. Sustainable palm oil plantations are established on land that does not contain significant biodiversity or wildlife habitat.”

A triplet of North American river otters, Oscar, Oliver, and Otis, also celebrated their birthday earlier this month. Karmel Harper, associate director of public relations and marketing, said the aquarium got the idea of celebrating animals’ birthdays from a guest who made the suggestion.

“We got a letter from one of our little guests who said we should celebrate more animal birthdays,” Harper said. Harper ensured that the animals get “restaurant-quality food” as evidenced by the otters’ cake which was made of ice and frosting consisted of blended shrimp. Rhubarb’s cake was an ice cake made with fish. While the aquarium does its best to recognize all their animals,

Harper admits it’s difficult to do so for the over 4,500 wild residents of the center.

“One of our biggest missions is to invite the public to come and learn more about the conservation of these animals,” Harper said.

Shipp, who has a bachelor’s degree in biology and has been a keeper for several years, said that everyone at the aquarium does a wonderful job in taking care of the vast array of animals there.

“I think that one important piece for the public to understand about animals, zoos and aquariums is the amount of effort that is put into these animals’ welfare. Their food is restaurant quality—they eat better than me, for sure,” she said. The aquarium also has an on call vet who is there to care for the

animals at any time and great effort has been made to ensure that the animals are stimulated mentally and physically in the most ethical way possible.

Shipp says that even though not much is known about clouded leopards, she is confident she has made a bond with the animals.

“It’s really cool to get people to learn about them, and we hope people will use their purchasing power to help these cats,” Shipp said. “The goal is to touch as many people as we can.”

Since she was born on March 14, which is Pi Day and Albert Einstein’s birthday, Rhubarb, aka Rhu, was named after Einstein’s favorite pie. l

St. John Middle School adds Hope Squad to bring suicide prevention to forefront

t was a week of fun, wearing favorite football jerseys, adding stickers to water bottles, and eating doughnuts, but it was more than that.

St. John the Baptist Middle School’s first Hope Week was held recently to bring awareness to suicide prevention and help students know who the newly formed Hope Squad is and what they do to help, said Kelly Pecora, St. John Middle Hope Squad adviser.

The idea of the football jerseys was to “tackle” suicide by bringing awareness to it, and to pass out doughnuts to remind their peers how awesome they are. The stickers—“You’re amazing,” “Just breathe,” “I was made for sunny days”—are to be lasting affirmative reminders. There also was a presentation about the SafeUT app.

Pecora also said that hopefully, through daily challenges, students made friends by saying hi to someone they didn’t know or sat with someone new at lunch.

St. John’s Hope Squad began this year as an idea from a parent.

“Through positive conversations and excitement from the teachers, it has really taken off,” said Mary Thorne, St. John director of student services and Hope Squad adviser.

Thorne said studies show students are more likely to talk to peers than an adult or parent.

“Mental health is a big issue, and during COVID-19, kids have internalized things more than they did in the past. It’s really important that they know they have someone they can talk to,” she said.

Sixty students were nominated in each grade or more than 200 nominations before ultimately narrowing it to 12.

“The students filled out a survey if they need somebody to talk to, who would they feel comfortable talking to. I think that’s really impactful that our Hope Squad is seen as these people,” Pecora said.

Before being named to the squad, “we talked to the kids and their parents to make sure this was something they were comfortable with and understood what they would be doing,” she said. “The squad knows they are a safe place to listen and give support and then report back if they need help.”

When help is needed, school counselors step in to give the student the supports and resources they need, Pecora said.

The squad, comprised of sixth-, seventhand eighth-grade students, is trained to recognize warning signs in depressed or suicidal teens and empower them to seek help from adult through QPR—ask question, persuade them to talk and refer to a trusted adult, she said.

“The kids have really taken the initiative and ownership of Hope Squad,” Pecora said, adding that they have given presentations about suicide prevention and Hope Squad to each grade.

In envelopes outside the nine Hope Squad advisers’ classrooms and offices, there are cards with names of the squad members and advisers along with the SafeUT crisis line, which is anonymous. Daily, the Hope Squad wears red lanyards to identify them to their peers and wear Hope Squad T-shirts on dressdown days.

While St. John Middle hasn’t had any known suicide attempts, Pecora said that the preventative measure is important as she knows from working at other schools, students are addressing this issue.

“It’s astonishing how many elementary age students have thought of suicide and know about self-harm,” she said, adding that many people find talking about it can be uncomfortable. “It shouldn’t be uncomfortable. It’s just another emotion that we have sometimes, and we need to deal with that.” l

Charger cheer among best in nation

T

he Corner Canyon High varsity cheer team won the bronze medal in the Medium Varsity Division I Category at the National High School Cheerleading Championship Feb. 11-13 in Orlando, Florida. The junior varsity squad finished fifth overall in the Small Junior Varsity division. It marks the third year in a row in which both teams finished in the top five at nationals.

“Our only goal going into the national championships was for both teams to hit their routines as putting our best out there is the only thing that we can control,” said head coach Whitney Lunt. “The girls absolutely blew us away and accomplished this goal. Varsity hit a perfect routine in preliminaries to skip the semifinal round and go straight through to the finals, where they hit for a second time. JV competed in all three rounds, and though they had minor bobbles, they also did not have any stunt falls in any of their routines—that’s pretty remarkable and we are super proud of them!”

CCHS wrestler repeats as state champ

F

or the second year in a row, Corner Canyon’s Brigham Bagley stood atop the podium at the 6A state wrestling championships. This season, the senior won the 138lbs. category with an 8-6 decision over Pleasant Grove’s Koda DeAlley Feb. 19 at Utah Valley University in helping the Chargers finish fourth as a team. He was also named Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament.

“I felt like I kinda had a target on my head this year after winning it last year,” Bagley said. “It felt super good to win state this year because I had knee surgery at the beginning of the season and missed half of the season because of it, so it was good to come back and win it. It was extra hard to come back having to deal with my knee still healing and coming into a tougher weight after bumping up a few weight classes.”

Bagley, son of Robert and Trisha Bagley of Draper, began wrestling when he was 12 and bounced between that sport and football before settling in on the mat in high school.

“Wrestling has taught me that hard work pays off and you get out of it what you put in,” said the senior, who plans on studying at BYU. Also at the 6A state tournament, defending champion Tyler Vivanco beat Fremont’s Jason Worthley to reach the finals in the 113-lbs. division where he was defeated by Geronimo Rivera of Layton. Junior Teancum Mitchell also reached the finals, at 215 lbs., by winning over Cyprus’ Skyler Armenta before losing to Damon Armenta, also of Cyprus.

Other top finishers for the Chargers were junior Gavyn Gappmayer (fourth place, 120 lbs.), senior Brad Critchfield

(fourth, 215 lbs.), freshman Leimana Fager (fifth, 175 lbs.), junior Quinn Bedell (sixth, 126 lbs.) and freshman Payden Woolsey (sixth, 132 lbs.).

“I thought our wrestlers peaked at the right time and put together a great state tournament,” said head coach Jeff Eure.

“We had a program-best eight placewinners and put three in the finals.”

Girls In the first year of sanctioned girls wrestling, Corner Canyon placed eighth as a team with three wrestlers reaching the semifinals.

Sophomore Bella Morgan placed third at 145 lbs. with junior Aly Larson taking fourth at 115 lbs. and freshman Meleana Fager finishing fifth at 135 lbs.

“It was an awesome first season,” said head coach John Fager. “We started with 20 girls and ended with 14 with six placing at state.”

Other Chargers placers were junior Kam Nez (third, 155 lbs.), junior Eva Schuenemann (sixth, 115 lbs.) and sophomore Midori Kano (sixth, 190 lbs.).

Coach Fager said every one of his wrestlers was brand new to the sport except his daughter Meleana, who has been on the mat since she was five years old.

“These girls didn’t come in with any bad habits, so they are learning sound technique and growing with the right fundamentals,” he said. “Our goal is to help every girl become the best they can and reach their individual goals. Our team success is a byproduct of our individual successes and needs.

Utahns rally in support of Ukraine

During times of difficulty, there are inspiring examples…of personal courage. I know I’m not alone in the awe I feel of the brave men and women…the people of Ukraine have risen to the moment… and in doing that, they’ve given us hope. I think we all have a new hero in President Zelenskyy. He took a nontraditional path to the presidency and that path led him to this treacherous and defining moment. Courage and hope are contagious, I know we feel that contagion in Utah, in the United States and around the world,” Henderson said.

Mendenhall told the crowd that members of her family left Russian occupied Lithuania during WWII and were never able to go back, but came to America, found safety and pursued the American dream. “This assault on Ukraine is personal. Freedom is not free and our democracy is only as stable as our commitment to it.

Thank you for being bold enough to stand with our brothers and sisters in Ukraine,” she said.

Cox addressed both Ukrainians and Russians who live in Utah with words of support. “To the people of Russia living in their country, we do not hold you responsible. To Russians that can possibly hear us, we need you to push back…we know your lives are in danger, but you’re putting your own lives at risk to stand up to a dictator.”

Not since the 2002 Winter Olympics has the Utah capitol building been illuminated in special colors, but beginning the evening of the rally, it is now lit in yellow and blue and the flag of Ukraine flies above it.

“Why would something 6,000 miles away compel us to come together? They need to know that we believe in them and their righteous cause,” Cox said. l

Language of law can be confusing to many

O

ne in five American adults, or 21%, have trouble reading, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. These adults cannot compare and contrast information, understand paraphrasing or draw conclusions from what they read.

The state of Utah just finished its legislative session. New laws were discussed, changed, put in or thrown out. The needed reading level to understand many of the bills is at least 12th grade, with many needing college graduate skills.

Every bill has a description at the top that explains in bullet points telling what the bill does. Using a readability formula (readability.com), the description, not the bill itself, of House Bill 2 “New Fiscal Year Supplemental Appropriations Act” got a score of “college graduate and above” and “very difficult to read.”

“The legal jargon is so overwhelming sometimes that it makes me want to give up reading it entirely,” Midvale resident KoriAnne Starr Lucero said. “How are we as constituents supposed to know what is being passed (or what we are supporting or supposed to follow) if it’s intentionally made difficult to understand?”

The difficulty of understanding law is a problem linguists across the country have studied for decades.

“There has been a growing concern… regarding the inability of lay persons to understand legal language,” Robert and Veda Charrow wrote in the Columbia Law Review 1979.

“This concern has generated a movement to rewrite legal documents in ‘plain English.’”

When spoken, law can be even harder to understand. “...[With] native speakers…listening

comprehension accuracy of long, complex sentences with legal terminology (i.e., sentences similar to those in the Miranda warning) is less than 50%,” Scott Jarvis, a linguistics professor at the University of Utah, said. “Whereas it surpasses 90% for all other types of sentences.”

The choice of words comes to the people who make the laws, and even lawyers need specific training to understand the language of their own specialty.

“There’s a lot of legalese, with antiquated Latin terms,” Scotti Hill from the Utah State Bar said. “Law schools train people to trans-

late.”

After the laws are written, there are many ways to interpret them. Some say the law needs to be understood from the intent of the author, at the time it was written. Others say the law needs to be interpreted with modern meanings.

“Sometimes every comma does matter,” Hill said. “Sometimes every single word matters.”

Utah Rep. Robert Spendlove explained to the City Journals the bills are written by Legislative Research and Council.

“If we don’t write a bill in a certain way it will get overturned by the courts,” Spendlove

said.

“It can be simple or it can be really complicated. It has to be able to withhold judicial scrutiny.”

Another Utah representative, Cheryl Acton, is pleased with how Utah approaches law making.

“Compared to laws I've seen from other states, Utah's laws are almost entirely devoid of emotion and very cut and dried,” Acton said.

“I'd give our Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel an A on this. Plus they are constantly cleaning up old sections of code to remove extraneous and outdated words.” l

High schoolers looking for ways to unite communities

igh school students from across the state will gather April 8 as part of the Special Olympics state youth activation committee.

About 40 high school students who participate in the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools, which brings youth with and without intellectual disabilities together, will meet to learn how to make a positive impact in their school communities, said Unified Champion School’s college-growth coordinator Boston Iacobazzi, who coordinates Utah’s YAC. At the conference, the Special Olympic athletes and their peers will learn teambuilding, learn how to work together and how to share their stories as inclusive student-leaders. In addition, there will be a teacher training offered to learn how best to support the program in schools.

“A lot of states are growing the YAC program and learning of its importance,” Iacobazzi said. “I’m super excited where ours is at.”

year and currently has 16 on its board. The group works together throughout the year to educate, motivate and activate youth to become agents of change in their communities and advocate for respect, inclusion and acceptance of all people, regardless of abilities.

Iacobazzi said that these youth are leaders by implementing programs that unify schools.

“The youth are driving every event, getting grants and planning what we’re doing,” Iacobazzi said.

Already the group has promoted a statewide spirit week, participated in unified soccer and basketball programs, held a Disney Day at Westlake High and is planning a unified dance sponsored by Hillcrest High.

First Lady Abby Cox has been invited to speak at the conference and Colorado YAC is planning on attending and participating in break-out sessions. l Special Olympics Utah’s youth activation committee’s first-ever conference will bring Special Olympics athletes and their peers together in April to learn how best to support inclusion in schools.

Ukrainians living in Utah raise funds for humanitarian shipments to their homeland

By Peri Kinder | peri.k@davisjournal.com hen the Russian army invaded Ukraine at the end of February, the Utah Ukrainian Association was inundated with calls from people wanting to help. Within a few days, the association, in partnership with its sister organization in Idaho, had a plane full of supplies heading to Europe.

Utah Ukrainian Association boardmember Yulia Holko was born in Ukraine and moved to the United States in 2001.

Ten years ago, she relocated to Utah where she lives in Salt Lake County.

“Thankfully, my immediate family is here but I have lots of extended family in Western Ukraine,” Holko said.

“Even when they’re not being bombed, there are lots of air raid sirens going off and planes flying overhead, because it’s psychological warfare, too. It’s very hard to process. Members of our community have been under shock and stress.”

The Utah Ukrainian Association, and the 1,500 Ukrainians living in Utah, jumped at the chance to help their fellow countrymen and homeland. Members have organized rallies at the Utah State Capitol and are asking people to sign a petition to bring Ukrainian refugees to Utah.

Currently, it will take up to three years to get refugees resettled in the United States. The group wants to speed up the process as millions of Ukrainians have been displaced.

“People leave their home and leave everything behind,” Holko said. “Often, the only clothes they have is what they’re wearing.”

The association is accepting donations for the next shipment. Nonperishable foods, sleeping bags and solar power banks to charge phones are top items, along with clothes for warmer weather like T-shirts, light jackets, jeans and shoes.

“The support has been amazing. People have been turning out and speaking out,” she said. “It feels like anything we need, there’s a local business willing to donate funds. We were just a small organization before the war and we had to scale up really quickly.”

A benefit concert held at The Cathedral of the Madeleine in late March, brought the community together for prayer, music and solidarity for the Ukrainian people. “Voices for Ukraine” featured artists from the Utah Symphony, Utah Opera, University of Utah, Ballet West Academy and The Madeleine Choir School. Ukrainian musicians and multicultural vocalist Alex Boyé also added their talents to the event.

Although the concert was free, the standing room only event raised more than $16,000 from donations and sales to provide life-saving supplies for Ukrainian refugees, and those still trapped in Ukrainian cities.

Kateryna Hansen, a Utah Ukrainian resident, spoke at the “Voices of Ukraine” benefit. She detailed harrowing accounts of friends and family members, escaping into Poland or hiding in bomb shelters and basements.

“In less than one month, the country I know has been turned upside down,” Hansen said. “Children are dying. The dead have been left in the street for days until they can be buried in mass graves.”

Hansen asked benefit attendees to reach out to senators and congressmen, asking for more military and air defense support as the war rages in Ukraine.

The Utah Ukrainian Association will continue to send shipments to eastern Europe. The plane filled with donations flies from Idaho to Germany, then trucks carry the items to

osie Skinner shed tears of joy when Draper’s City Council unanimously approved a resolution establishing a bench naming and installation policy for all Draper City parks, trails, open space and other city owned property. She spoke in favor of the resolution prior to the council’s decision.

“My parents were big Draper people, my mom ran the Arts Council for years and my parents loved to do the gardening contest as well. To be able to have a bench to honor them is fantastic. I’m grateful to be able to honor my parents’ Draper legacy,” Skinner said.

A mother who’d recently lost her young son tearfully approached the council to speak in favor of the resolution. She said her son was cremated, but this resolution would allow his family and friends to have a place to

The city will allow a predetermined plaque size on the memorial benches which will be made of metal so as to be low maintenance. City Manager David Dobbins estimates the cost of each bench at a couple thousand dollars. “We will work with the donor to come up with location and cost. They pay the full cost to the city and then we do the work,” Dobbins said.

Skinner said the idea for memorial benches in Draper has been in the works for a long time. “I’ve been working on this for 10 years, first with Michele Weeks, then Tasha Lowery, Mayor Walker and David Dobbins. Chargers boys basketball finishes second at state

T

he Corner Canyon High boys basketball team went into the 6A state tournament ranked third and with high hopes to be there at the end. The Chargers were, but came up just short in the title game against American Fork 43-39 March 5 at the BYU Marriott Center.

“We are disappointed in taking second,” CCHS head coach Dan Lunt said. “The kids had a great year, and I am very proud of them.”

Senior Tyler Burraston, an honorable mention all-state player, scored 12 points and junior Max Toombs—named first team all-state—added 11 to lead Corner Canyon in the championship matchup.

The Chargers’ tournament run began with second round home game against Fremont Feb. 25—after a first-round bye—where the Chargers beat the Silverwolves 75-63 behind 25 points from Toombs and 19 from sophomore Brody Kozlowski.

Against Cyprus March 1 in the quarterfinal round at the University of Utah, Corner Canyon pulled out a close game 57-53 with Kozlowski leading the way with 16 points while Toombs and Burraston combined for 29.

In the semis at the U, senior Jaiden Feroah, a second-team all-state selection, had a career night, scoring 26 points to lead the Chargers over Westlake 68-60 March 3.

Toombs and Kozlowski also put up double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Toombs and Feroah were named to the 6A All-Tournament team.

Corner Canyon’s second-place finish completed a 19-7 season and the high school careers of Burraston, Feroah, Taylor Harris, Ty Neibaur and Tate Staley. Four of CCHS’ starting five averaged double digits offensively—Toombs (18 points), Feroah (12), Burraston (11) and Kozlowski (11)—with junior Jaxon Roberts adding nine a game as well.

Also on the 2021-22 team were juniors Kallen Lewis, Everest Romney and Carsen Tebbs; sophomores Tate Bowmen, Sam Chandler, Taylor Feroah, Isaac Neibaur and Well Robertson; and freshmen Donavan Averitte, Brigg Jensen, Peterson Lunt and Paxton Naegle.

“It was a team effort with every kid playing a big part in the team’s success,” Lunt said.

Lunt was assisted on the coaching staff by Taylor Anderson, Evric Gray, Kyler Smith and Perrin Andrel.

Girls The Corner Canyon High girls team battled through the tough Region 4—going 1-8 in its nine games—prior to this year’s 6A state tournament.

“Going through that region helps you get ready for state,” said new head coach Craig Morris.

The Chargers won their first-round matchup against Hunter 67-33 Feb. 22 behind freshman guard Taylor Workman’s 14 points with senior captain Natalie Newton scoring all nine of hers in the fourth quarter.

Against eventual finalist Fremont in the second round on Feb. 24, Corner Canyon lost 60-40. Sophomore Maia Rhay had six points to lead the team, which also had 10 other players score.

“It was a tough matchup, but we learned a lot about ourselves that will make us better next year,” said Morris.

The CCHS squad was led this season by sophomore Elina Mortensen, selected honorable mention all-state, with 12 points and five rebounds a game while junior Hannah Shinall, Newton and junior Summer Larsen all averaged around six to seven points each.

JDCHS boys basketball third best in state

T

he Juan Diego Catholic High School boys basketball program has an “EAT” mantra that stands for “Effort, Attitude and Teamwork” and that focus has led to a state semifinal appearance in five of the last six seasons as well as eight consecutive region titles.

“The EAT mantra has become more and more a part of who we are as a program,” said head coach Drew Trost. “We definitely still have work to do in all three areas, but it is something we strongly believe in and are constantly working towards.”

This season, the Soaring Eagle team lost to eventual 3A champion Layton Christian in the semis and then defeated Manti to finish third in the state.

“Of course, there is always disappointment at the end of the season and this year is no different,” Trost said. “This team really came together and was peaking at the right time. I was so proud of the strides we made in terms of playing together and playing great defense. We thought we had a good chance to win it all and were bummed to fall short in the semifinals.”

In the 3A state tournament, after a first-round bye, Juan Diego defeated South Summit 49-47 Feb. 19 behind 23 points from junior guard Zuriel Marquez, named third team all-state and 12 from sophomore center Malick Diallo, who was recognized as first team all-state.

In the quarterfinals, Diallo had a huge game with 24 points and 19 rebounds to lead the team over Morgan 49-43 in overtime.

Against Layton Christian, the 6-foot8 Diallo again put up monster numbers with 35 points and 20 rebounds in an 8069 loss.

In the third/fourth place game against Manti, freshman guard Noah Bendinger, named to the Region 15 second team, led with 18 points while Diallo had 15, to go with nine boards, and Marquez added 12 in the 73-57 win.

“It is hard to win games in the state tournament, so winning three games is quite an accomplishment,” Trost said, noting the youth on his team in starting three juniors, one sophomore and a freshman.

“Zu, Malik Harris and Colby Bryant were excellent all year and look to really lead the team next year. Malick Diallo had an incredible season [with 19 points and 12 rebounds a game, setting school records in rebounds and blocked shots] and Noah made 61 three-pointers, averaging nine points a game, which is pretty impressive for a freshman.”

Among the 19-7 record this season was Trost’s 300th career win—a feat enjoyed at home against Judge Memorial 6051 Jan. 24.

urrounded by 20 other fellow actors in Los Angeles who were between filming scenes for the FX series “Mayans M.C.,” Herriman’s Vince Vargas watched a livestream of his daughter Yvette “Star” Vargas competing in the 1A/2A/3A championship wrestling match in the 115-lb. division at the Sevier Valley Center Feb. 17. Star defeated Enterprise’s Alexandria Ramirez to win the title.

“We were all cheering and screaming and crying as she won,” Vince Vargas said.

“It was a pretty cool moment.”

“It felt pretty good to win,” Star Vargas said. “I just try my best and whatever happens happens.”

Star, the daughter of Vince and Christie Vargas of Herriman who is a junior at Juan Diego Catholic High School, also won a state title two years ago in the first unsanctioned Utah Girls State Tournament in the 100-lb. category. She was recognized as USA Wrestling’s Utah High School Freshman Female Wrestler of the Year.

Also placing for the JDCHS team at state this season—in the second year of girls wrestling being sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association—was sophomore Ximena Torales-Quintana who finished sixth in the 125-lb. weight category.

“It took a lot out of us and we probably pushed them harder than we should have,” he said. The two sisters enjoyed plenty of success on the mat, but Star decided to take last year off to pursue other interests and focus on academics unsure if she would ever wrestle again.

New coaches at Juan Diego who brought a new approach “rejuvenated Star’s love for the sport,” according to her dad, and she returned to two-hour practices each day in hopes of returning to the top of the podium. “I never really liked the sport until this year,” Star said. “The coaches made a big impact on me and taught me so much. They made it fun and this year has felt more like a family.”

Vince Vargas said that wrestling has transformed his daughter. “Star’s extremely shy and wrestling has built a lot of confidence in her,” he said. “It’s been fun to watch her growth and fall in love with it again. We have tried to step back and let her do her thing, and then be there as needed with hugs and praise.”

Star said she hopes to defend her state title in her senior year while continuing to

“I would attribute our success to many factors, including being blessed with a lot of talented players, great support from our administration, and the winning culture we have been able to establish,” Trost said. “We have been fortunate to have some great former players set a high standard in terms of commitment, work ethic and character. Current players are expected to maintain and build upon this culture.”

JDCHS Girls The JDCHS girls team started the year 0-12 and didn’t pick up their first win until Jan. 14, two games into region play, when the Soaring Eagle squad defeated American Leadership 51-40.

“We had a really tough preseason that could have discouraged the girls, but they were resilient and kept getting better,” said head coach Ashlee McKray. “They were playing strong by the end of region play where we finished tied for third place.”

Against top-ranked and undefeated Judge Memorial in the second round, Juan Diego lost 70-33, its third time facing their Region 15 rival—and the eventual 3A state champion—this season.

Crooms again led the way with nine points with the loss ending a 5-16 season for the Soaring Eagle team.

Crooms averaged 11 points a game as the leading scorer this year. “Alynn really learned how to create her own shots within the offense, and her competitiveness was contagious to all,” McKray said.

McKray also noted the contributions of senior forward Kyra Hoffman and junior point guard Annette Rodriguez. “Kyra was our rock. She is such a physical and tough player that helped our defense improve throughout the season,” McKray said. “Annette was tough as nails for us and grew immensely in her vocal leadership on the defensive and offensive end.”

Also on the 2021-22 JDCHS squad were seniors Mwende Kavila, Nicole Mamuzic and Kayla Pelayo; juniors Brianna Aquilla, Jenna Butkovich, Nyrvanah Crockett and Melissa Osmundson; and freshmen Madyson Cruz, Thea Gostercic, Avie Hernandez, Camilla Lopez, Maiay Ornelas, Zoe Pappas, Olivia Prosper, Lara Shroff, Sanjula Sunil, Gabriella Trujillo and Cintia Villagomez.

100-year plan envisions greenway networks throughout valley

S

tand in an empty parking lot in Murray, just west of 900 East and north of Van Winkle Expressway. What sounds can you hear? Like many places in the valley, there’s the sound of cars roaring past and the persistent beeping of construction vehicles. But at this particular spot, you can also hear the waters of Big Cottonwood Creek rushing past.

Perhaps one day you’ll also be able to hear children playing, native birds chirping and shouts of laughter as kayakers glide past.

This dream comes from the Seven Greenways Vision Plan, a community-supported, long-range plan that reimagines the seven creeks that flow from the Wasatch Mountains to the Jordan River and eventually to the Great Salt Lake.

Once upon a time, the seven creeks meandered and occasionally flooded their banks, enriching the surrounding soil. The waterways formed corridors for plants and wildlife through the dry valley.

Then the first white settlers arrived and immediately begin diverting the water into canals to water crops. Over the next 175 years, the valley became more and more urbanized.

The streams are now mostly straightened, stripped of vegetation, lined with concrete or completely buried underground.

The Seven Canyons Trust hopes to reverse this damage—one foot at a time—by working with public and private landowners to develop greenways.

A greenway is a linear corridor that includes a waterway and adjacent land. Greenways can improve non-motorized transportation, generate economic activity, reduce impacts of flooding, improve water quality and provide habitat for wildlife.

Greenways can also be created when water is “daylighted,” meaning underground pipes are removed. This process helps purify

the water, improves conditions for fish and birds, and lets people see the water that sustains life in the valley.

Hundred-year plan In 2019, Seven Canyons Trust set out to create a 100-year greenways vision for the Salt Lake Valley. They partnered with Salt Lake County, the Wasatch Front Regional Council, Design Workshop, an urban design firm, and representatives from the eight stream-side municipalities.

“We asked those cities to provide a letter of support and financially support the plan,” said Brian Tonetti, executive director of the Trust. “That was really exciting to us, having each of the cities buying into this plan.”

“The project started with taking general plans—many city’s plans mentioned creeks—and basically compiling all that into a countywide vision,” Tonetti said. “A lot of the groundwork was laid out by the cities.”

The resulting Existing Conditions Report is rich with data that supports the creation of greenways. The information is examined through five lenses: water, nature, community, recreation and urban areas.

The next step was to learn what the public thinks. Rather than postponing the community engagement phase in 2020, the Trust pivoted.

“The pandemic itself made us realize that we do need spaces and we need spaces close to home,” Tonetti said. “It also made engagement very hard.”

Members of the community gave feedback on 26 proposed “opportunity areas” through the Trust’s website and during 15 popup workshops that took place in outdoor, public spaces. University students also conducted surveys to capture opinions of people less likely to have internet access.

areas and provides tools to implement them, including design concepts, policies and management best practices.

Of the nearly 36 miles of water, just over 14 are currently buried. The nine highest ranking areas are in Salt Lake City, with daylighting City Creek along North Temple and the Fulsom Corridor at the top.

One opportunity area proposes a trail connection from Wasatch Boulevard to Crestwood Park along Little Cottonwood Creek (No. 19). This project also crosses into Sandy.

Holladay Holladay is home to four miles of Big Cottonwood Creek.

Just 1/10th of a mile is buried.

One potential project proposes a trail from Holladay Hills to Creekside Park (No. 16). The project would improve pedestrian access, restore the habitat and create opportunities for fishing.

South Salt Lake Less than half a mile of the more than 3 miles of Mill Creek flowing through South Salt Lake is buried. But much of the open water is channelized through a straightened, concrete canal. An exception to this is Fitts Park and the Mill Creek Trail, which connects the park to the Jordan River Trail. While the park is a Carter Bell attempts a scissor kick during region action against Orem. The Hawks were off to a flying 6-1 start to the season at press time. great amenity, Seven Canyons Trust believes it can be improved by restoring habitats and enhancing recreation along the creek (No. 12).

The greenways plan also proposes daylighting Mill Creek near 3300 South and 700 East during the redevelopment of the nearby shopping center (No. 11), restoring habitat along Mill Creek from 200 East to 200 West (No. 13), and restoring wetlands where Mill Creek flows into the Jordan River to improve water quality (No. 15).

Looking further ahead, a 100-year vision proposes a pedestrian crossing over I-15 to improve recreational access for surrounding communities (No. 14).

Sandy Just under 2 miles of Little Cottonwood Creek flows through Sandy.

Midvale Midvale’s boundaries contain 0.3 miles of Little Cottonwood Creek. This small stretch flows above ground at the eastern edge of the Shops at Fort Union.

One idea envisions daylighting Little Cottonwood Creek between Fort Union in Midvale and Wheeler Farm in Murray Preston Ludlow cuts back against Orem. The junior scored the Lincoln Eberhardt takes a corner kick during region action.

(No. 20). This would require a trail over I-215, with the goal to game-winning goal in overtime to beat Orem 3-2. improve water quality and connect the two communities.

What happens next?

Though the community visioning phase is over, individuals can still review and comment on the planning document, which can be found at sevengreenwaysvisionplan.org.

For Tonetti, the work is just beginning. Next, he’ll begin meeting with planners and officials from each of the municipalities to discuss next steps toward implementation.

“The cities will let us know which areas really resonate with them and what they’re really excited about,” Tonetti said.

One way to imagine how the opportunity areas could look is to visit the Three Creeks Confluence Park near 1300 South and 900 West in Salt Lake City. Completed in 2020, the Trusts’s first project daylighted 200 feet of waterway where Red Butte, Emigration and Parleys Creeks meet the Jordan River.

“All of the opportunity areas are relatively low-hanging fruit, as long as we have the support for them,” Tonetti said.

My year with the City Journals: A reflection and review of the contributions of women

S

ince I began as a reporter for the City Journals, I have had the privilege of interviewing some amazing people. The interview process has always been my favorite part of reporting.

I have always enjoyed meeting someone new, learning about what makes them unique and writing their story for others to read.

During March, the stories being shared were about women. March 8, officially known as International Women’s Day, was a day to highlight the unique contributions and achievements of women the world over. To put it more eloquently, “to provide education on how women helped shape the nation [world].”

I’ve come to learn through my first year writing for the City Journals just how much women help shape our community and world.

And how important their stories are to tell.

I got the lead for my first story from Facebook, where I was able to get in touch with Kim Deverall, who specialized in giving haircuts to those living with special needs. We met at the salon she worked at, JCPenney at the District.

Deverall works to meet new clients and make new connections providing one-on-one service for clients who have special needs due to autism or other neurological divergent disorders.

“I am so lucky and honored to be in a position to help a population that is so frequently misunderstood,” Deverall said. “I love working for a company that has given me the ability to give neurodivergent individuals the dignity and socialization they deserve.”

I then had the opportunity to interview another woman who took a big chance only to have it pay off in a delicious way. I met Carol Timmons, a business owner in South Jordan, and reported on her little slice of heaven in Flake Pie Company.

Recently, Flake contributed $11,152 to help those in Ukraine through the CARE Ukraine Crisis Fund. According to an Instagram post, the Flake Pie Company team baked and sold 3,477 flakies, their signature pastry.

Anna Linner was a true gem from the moment I met her at the South Jordan Public Library. I wandered in one day looking for story leads actually, and Linner greeted me at the front desk, behind a large plastic shield (thanks Covid). I knew she had a story to share. And it turns out, I wasn’t wrong. Born in Hungary, she went on to earn a master’s of library sciences degree at age 50, to become a full-on librarian. Linner continues to work at the South Jordan library.

I was enthusiastic to learn that there was a new Girl Scout troop being formed in South Jordan last summer for girls enrolled in kindergarten or first grade, and that Jen Bingman was to be their leader. Twice a month Bingman lets a group of talkative and eager five to seven year olds in her backyard to teach them things about building robots, planting trees and selling cookies.

“We’ve had a fun first year with our Daisy troop,” Bingman said. “Our troop has had special challenges regarding meetings with Covid restrictions, cookie delays due to supply chain issues, and losing four troop leaders, but our families rallied around our troop to provide the support we needed to continue with our endeavors.”

Then I met Durga Ekambaram after I saw her mural under the bridge of the Jordan River Trail at 10600 South. I have been able to follow her work on social media. The patience and the persistence it must take to create, to have an idea and to have to slowly nurture it to life is inspiring on many levels.

The trail mural project has given Ekambaram the confidence to explore new mediums and techniques. In February, her mixed media artwork was selected to be displayed at the World of the Wild art show at the Hogle Zoo. Her watercolor paintings were also selected in November 2021 to be featured on a utility box in Daybreak. She is looking forward to several art displays at South Jordan City Hall, Millcreek Library and Utah Cultural Center.

I was once again amazed not only by the physical strength of women, but their mental strength as well. I met Debbie Millet, a former weightlifting champion and now a coach to young women competing in the clean and press and the snatch. I spoke to some of these young women, in particular Malia Levy and Maci Wynn, who talked about their training schedules and their determination, and what it meant to have a female role model like Millet.

According to Millet, Levy took gold at the American Open in Ohio late last year, and will

represent team USA at the Youth Pan Am and Youth Worlds this upcoming summer of 2022.

Wynn is now one of the top three women in the country, lifting the previous American record in the snatch event. Wynn is now in a position to make the 2024 Summer Olympic team.

Most recently, I met the heartwarming group known as Females in Action Salt Lake Valley or FIA. They welcomed me into their group, challenged me to a little physical exercise routine, gave me a nickname and explained how they as a group look out for one another. It

was heartwarming to see, as we live in a world that can be so divided, that these women will welcome and accept other women regardless of race, religion, economic status and a host of other things that often keep people at bay.

We have women in our communities who are leaders, mentors, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, volunteers, professionals and all-around positive influences. All of these women, and many others like them whose stories I have yet to share, help shape the community, and their stories are relevant. l

Supporting small businesses is good for the economy

I

recently visited Weller Book Works in Salt Lake City.

The 93-year-old independent bookstore is among the treasured small businesses in Utah that give our neighborhoods their distinctive flavor and create a feeling of community.

Small businesses like Weller Book Works not only have an important place in our hearts, but they also play a vital role in our economy. In Utah, 99% of companies are considered small businesses and they employ 45% of state’s workforce.

Nationally, small businesses have accounted for two-thirds of net new job creation since 2000, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. They also keep money close to home. If you spend $100 at a local small business, roughly $67 stays in your community.

Small businesses have been a key driver of Utah’s economic rebound from the pandemic, though they still face enormous challenges. With inflation now at a 40-year high, one in four small business owners report that inflation is their biggest concern, according

to the March NFIB Small Business Optimism Index. Much of this inflation is caused by struggles in the supply chain, and 92% of small businesses say they have been impacted by supply chain disruptions. Small businesses also continue to grapple with labor shortages.

Almost half of business owners could not fill job openings, the NFIB survey found.

Given these pressures, it’s not surprising that 63% of Utahns have an unfavorable outlook on business conditions nationally over the next 12 months, as measured by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute’s Utah Consumer Sentiment Survey. The survey found less pessimism toward business conditions in the Beehive State, where only 36% of Utahns have an unfavorable outlook.

There may be some relief ahead for small businesses. The Federal Reserve is taking aggressive action to control price increases. The Fed hiked the key short-term interest by a quarter point in March, marking its first rate increase in more than three years. Up to six additional rate hikes are expected this year, which could cause interest rates to increase by as much as two percent. Their hope is to deflate some of the bubbles that have formed because the overheating economy.

Another positive sign for small businesses is Utah’s strong job market. All of Utah’s

10 major private-sector industry groups posted year-over-year job gains, according to Utah’s Department of Workforce Services.

Utah’s annual total employment has increased by 4.2 %, adding 66,000 jobs over the past year.

However, the Russian war with Ukraine is adding more uncertainty to the economy, just as it is turning the corner on the COVID pandemic. The war has pushed already high oil prices to new multi-year highs. The war is also disrupting the supply of wheat, which

will pressure food prices, and nickel, which is an essential ingredient in stainless steel and a component in lithium-iron batteries. This will add yet another element of uncertainty to the small business recovery.

In the meantime, the best way to help ensure the survival of our favorite neighborhood small businesses is to support them as much as possible.

Female golfers will mix business and fun at the Copper Rock Championships in April

ormer Utah Senator Pat Jones understands not all business discussions happen in the office. Often, valuable deals are made on a golf course. When she realized many women aren’t usually involved in golf tournaments, she understood how often they are left out of important business decisions.

As the CEO of the Women’s Leadership Insititute, Jones organized a women’s golf clinic and tournament where they could build relationships, learn the basics of game and golf etiquette, participate in a scramble, and put themselves in a better position for inclusion.

“What I’ve learned, and I knew it intuitively, is that golf is the language of business,” Jones said. “That’s just how business has worked for so many years. It’s important for women to learn a sport that can help further their careers.”

The program was so successful that the WLI entered into an exclusive three-year charity partnership with the LPGA Epson Tour at the Copper Rock Golf Course near Hurricane, Utah.

The event is a week-long immersion for female leaders in Utah with the opportunity to play with top golfers and network with other professionals.

This year’s Copper Rock Championship event will run from April 18-23 and feature 220 pro female golfers. Last year’s event was a success, although Jones admitted she was a little intimidated playing with pro golfers. She even took a few lessons.

“I felt I had to play in the Pro-Am,” she said. “Since I was encouraging women, I felt I had to walk the talk. I can’t wait to go again this year. The pro golfers were so generous with their time and advice.”

The event starts on Monday, with the WLI Pro-Am, fol-

lowed by a Meet the Pros Night on Tuesday. Wednesday is the ElevateHER Challenge Luncheon with keynote speaker Sharlene Wells Hawkes. The luncheon will be a time to recognize companies that have accepted the ElevateHER Challenge.

Thursday through Saturday is the Copper Rock Championships where the women can cheer on their Pro-Am teammates as they vie for the title.

“ElevateHER is a corporate challenge with six actions companies can take based on best practices that will elevate women in business,” Jones said.

The program’s goal is to increase the number of women in leadership positions and the retention rate of female workers.

Companies are asked to increase the number of women who serve on community and corporate boards, establish a women’s leadership development program, close wage gaps, and encourage women to run for public office.

WLI started in 2015 to elevate female leaders in Utah.

With the WLI Career Development Series, companies can sponsor female leaders, investing in their future.

“It’s been hugely popular,” Jones said. “Companies who have accepted the challenge can send female leaders, mid to senior level. When women go back and teach their teams, it helps them be seen as the leader they are. It’s really magical.”

WLI also offers a Political Development Series that coaches women who want to run for office. The program started seven years ago and more than 300 women have completed the course. Several women currently serving as mayors in Utah went through the program.

Taken to the cleaners

A

ppliances are like Christmas lights.

When one goes out, they all go out.

We’ve spent the last couple of years replacing appliances, and not easy things like toasters or the electric carving knife. We’re talking a dishwasher, a dryer, a refrigerator, and now our washing machine.

I hated to tell my husband the bad news, not because of the expense but because I had to brace myself for the laundry puns. He has loads of them. But I threw in the towel and waited for his list to unfold.

“Well, sheet,” he started. “I spilled laundry soap and now my hands are Tide. I’d better come clean ‘cause I’m in a lot of hot water. I’m all washed up. Oh, the irony!”

Once that was done, I had to decide the best way to clean our clothes until the new washer was delivered. Options were 1) go to a laundromat, 2) drive to Utah Lake where I could wash my clothes against a rock until developers make Utah Fantasy Island, or 3) say, “Alexa, do the laundry.”

The laundromat won. It’s been years since I’ve visited a laundromat. I bought a chai tea latte to sip, packed a book to read whilst waiting for clothes to dry, and a notebook to write pithy thoughts.

My first impression of the laundromat was the warmth from the dryers and the smell of fabric softener was so cozy. This will be joyous, I thought. Maybe I’ve found

my new community. Things went downhill quickly.

While inserting 19 quarters (!!) into the machine, I shoved clothes into the washer and noticed my tea had spilled all over the laundry basket. I grabbed my tea, closed the washer door, and sliced my finger open, leaving bloody fingerprints on the handle.

Trying not to think about what types of bacteria live on the handle of a laundromat washing machine, I considered leaving the blood there so the next person would wonder if a serial killer had washed his T-shirts. But I used a damp, tea-soaked towel to wipe it up and looked for a place to sit.

Making my way to a row of stiff, plastic chairs, I sat down to enjoy the lukewarm remains of my tea. I opened my book and looked around the room where people sat staring at cell phones. No one made eye contact.
