I

f you stand directly underneath the 165-foot tall EECO (Ecosystem Exploration Craft & Observatory) at Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, you can still see a reminder of the structure’s former life as the outdoor stage for U2’s 360° World Tour. The disco ball that once reflected a myriad of lights onto audiences still hangs inside the center of EECO. No one could have imagined that the outdoor stage known as “the Claw” would one day find a permanent home in Utah as a sort of beacon, inviting visitors to explore and learn about the natural world.

Guests are now able to get an up-close look at EECO and explore the pathways, gardens and outdoor exhibit spaces that comprise the new Rio Tinto Kennecott Plaza. The Plaza and Welcome Center are the latest additions to the Aquarium’s Science Learning Campus.

“The entire focus of the plaza, gardens and EECO is education. It is much like an outdoor museum,” explained Chief Operating Officer Heather Doggett. “Science and art work hand in hand to teach us about our world.”

In a press release, Aquarium founder and CEO Brent Anderson stated, “We want visitors to learn that we can have a big impact on the world through our choices. There will be learning experiences for every age, from 2 to 92.”

The Rio Tinto Kennecott Plaza is created around three educational themes: Curiosity, Connections and Choices. The microscopic world of otherworldly tiny creatures such as tardigrades and mites are brought to life for guests to explore in the Curiosity section. Colorful sculptures of these animals

Juan Diego Catholic High student snags best supporting actor from Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards

I

n a typical year a packed theater of high school students eagerly await the announcement of the Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards; this year instead had them at home watching screens In a world that has gone virtual because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first-ever live streaming of the awards show, presented by the Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre, announced state winners, including Juan Diego Catholic High’s Anthony Tibolla, who won the best supporting actor award.

Tibolla, who already was named a finalist, watched the live stream when it was announced he won. Tibolla not only won a trophy, but he was awarded $1,250 in scholarships and invited to compete in the CS Music Competition.

“At first I didn’t know what to do,” he said. “My family was sitting in the living room, and I was in shock when I heard a very loud scream. My grandparents and aunt and uncle called and texted. Then, I got a bunch of texts congratulating me. I was a little sad that we weren’t there as a cast to celebrate because we’re like family. The whole thing was and still is surreal; it’s a very big honor that I’m very grateful because it is what I want to do. It was on the school morning YouTube announcements we all watched at home and some teachers emailed. It feels good. Anyone like me who has artistic passion and inevitably doubts their ability, has confirmation to think, ‘I’m OK at something I’m passionate about’ and that’s very cool.”

Tibolla stepped into theatre in eighth grade and was cast in the high school’s production of “Grease.”

“Whoever watched me in ‘Grease,’ admittedly saw I was very bad; I couldn’t dance and I’d still say I’m not what people call a dancer,” he said. “I was scared, but my mom encouraged me. I had really bad anxiety and

performing in front of people scared me. But I was asked, ‘what’s the worse thing that can happen if it’s something you love doing?’ I kept at it and love musical theatre. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Tibolla, a high school junior, has performed in several Juan Diego performances, such as “Godspell” and “Guys and Dolls” as well as recently in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night” where he played Christopher, a 15-year-old whose condition isn’t stated, but leads one to believe he has Asperger’s syndrome, autism or savant syndrome.

With his award-winning role as Rev. Moore in “Footloose,” he let himself feel the loss and then, as the character, tried to shut out his emotions rather than to allow love to help himself heal.

“He was angry and didn’t want to lose his daughter like he did his son, but he still extremely loves and cares for his family and that is something we can all connect to,” he said.

Juan Diego theatre director Joe Crnich is glad his student, who he said, “works extremely hard, is dedicated, funny and really low key,” got recognized for his performance.

“I’ve worked with Anthony since his eighth-grade year; he has continued to grow and grow, and he just had a great breakout moment,” he said. “We were working on the reprise of ‘Footloose,’ when Rev. Moore confesses to the congregation and we needed to see that moment when he puts the burden down. It just wasn’t there. But during the performance, Anthony found it and figured out a way to make it work, emotionally, and let us in. It was magical.”

Tibolla wasn’t the only area winner. Hillcrest High tied for best choreography in the fall 2019’s performances of “42nd Street” and Cottonwood High won for best orchestra with “Matilda.”

It was Hillcrest High’s first win for best

choreography, said Chelsea Lujan, dance teacher and choreographer for the show.

“Once we decided on the show, I let the kids take the initiative to learn the (tap) steps,” she said. “If they learned them by August, then they would be on stage in the musical. Some of them watched videos, some took classes and some already knew how to tap so when we came together in the fall, we had a core group who could help teach the rest of the cast.”

About 90 cast members—productions company, dance company and 30 other dedicated students—provided extra help for other 80 members of the chorus, who found themselves dancing in the aisles during the performances.

“We had tappers helping non-tappers and they fed off each other and got more and more excited. They wanted to do their absolute best and succeed. They know what a Hillcrest musical is and our expectations and they put forth that effort, work hard and value that to create something that is spectacular. What was fun about the students learning it was hearing students tap in the hallways, shuffle under their desks—but I think it drove the teachers crazy,” Lujan said.

The cast watched the awards individually, about 50 of them group chatted together.

“They were really happy they were honored for their hard work and saw how much what they did was appreciated,” Lujan said.

“It was a little sad to be away from each other during this, but I’m glad they got the recognition.”

Cottonwood High’s instrumental director, Amber Tuckness, immediately received texts from friends, congratulating her orchestra pit for their accomplishment.

“I immediately sent an email to my students afterward, telling them how proud I was of them,” she said. “It’s a nice recognition and

I’m thankful that they were honored. We had a huge pit full of musicians and this award validates us. So many high schools don’t have live pit orchestras anymore, but we do and that is one of the reasons our musicals are so successful. Recorded music is not the same feel and it’s harder for the actors.”

Tuckness said that typically pit orchestra students are learning music on their own time; it is not part of their grade. Rehearsals may take 50 hours in advance and then another 10 days of practicing with the actors.

Tuckness said that after the judges watched their performance, they came to the stage and talked to the students.

“The kids got the immediate feedback from the judges and got complimented on providing live music to the show. It was a fun show to do,” she said. “I’m glad they did the virtual awards ceremony; it was one less thing to take away from the kids this school year.”l

Corner Canyon boys volleyball makes it to the top

on’t tell the Corner Canyon boys volleyball team that the end-ofthe-season tournament they won wasn’t the official Utah Boys Volleyball Association state tournament.

It certainly was to them, and they finally defeated three-time state champion Bingham—in the semifinals— before defeating Olympus in the championship match to come out on top of the eight-team “Kick the COVID” Tournament June 12-13 at Sport City in Draper.

Corner Canyon defeated every opponent in straight sets during the two-day tournament. The Chargers were first in their pool heading into the championship round. It was in the semifinals that they came up against powerhouse Bingham.

“In typical fashion, our match with Bingham was really close and in the past we have buckled after losing a tight first set and fold in the second,” CCHS assistant coach Dan Penrod said. “As this match was underway, it felt like the same story was playing out but our guys found a way to beat them. After the match, our players were asking, ‘Who’s Bingham?’ It felt so good for the guys to get the monkey off their back.”

Outside hitter and co-captain Gavin Penrod said, “The fact that most of our team was seniors this year, making it our last opportunity to win really pushed us to work hard. On top of that it was also [opposite hitter] Jack’s [Nielsen’ 18th] birthday so we had to win.”

In the championship match, Corner Canyon defeated Olympus 25-18, 25-16 behind Nielsen’s 12 kills and a combined 12 kills from Gavin Penrod and outside hitter TJ Burns. Setter Zane Minnick recorded 28 assists in running the offense while Ty Pace led defensively with six digs.

“Winning was the biggest relief

of 2020,” Minnick said. “I was super proud of my team because, unlike past years, we wanted it the most. We worked hard before COVID-19 and even harder during the two-week practice period before the tournament. It was awesome to end my volleyball career by winning it all.”

The tournament came about when coaches, parents and players reached out to Club GSL founder and owner Warren Van Schalkwyk about their desire to still have a tournament of some sort to help salvage their shortened season due to the coronavirus pandemic which shut everything down in March.

“I decided to try and do something about their itch to play so once the health protocols were somewhat lifted, I was able to secure some court space and then sent some information out to a handful of people,” Van Schalkwyk said.

Within two days, eight varsity and four junior varsity teams were signed up to play in the tournament.

“Typically, the UBVA hosts a state tournament with the top 16 teams to get the very best of the best,” Van Schalkwyk said. “With only a two-week season, we were unable to determine that, but we did our best to give the boys a chance to play.”

First-year head coach Ben Braga said he saw talent, motivation, enthusiasm and passion right away in his guys as practices and the season began this year. “Their desire to go beyond was very clear,” he said. “The shutdown hit them pretty bad. Most of them were seniors and they got very frustrated with the possibility of not playing their last high school season. When we found out about being able to eventually play, we had two weeks to prepare. Luckily, the boys were ready and we could focus on

game situation and strategies only.”

Also on this year’s varsity team were Blake Rupp, Anthony Vranes, Keegan Rappleye and Rylan Featherstone.

Braga came in with the “challenge” to help the Chargers finally beat Bingham. “During the tournament, I realized we were going to win when I saw their determination and desire to put all in that court and play their best,” Braga said. “The keys to winning were dedication, hard work and passion and mixing that with fun. We showed them how to work hard and enjoy that time.

These boys love to play.”

Coach Penrod said the 2019 Chargers squad was more talented than the Miners, but Bingham’s mental toughness won out. “This season, we had the skill, talent and athleticism and our guys’ confidence put them over the edge,” he said.

“Our guys simply turned on a switch and it was on the whole day. It was a confirmation of what I knew they were.”

“Winning this year felt unreal,” Nielsen said. “We played so good as a team and had intensity during the whole tournament. If we didn’t have that it would’ve been a different story.”

Corner Canyon’s junior varsity team also came out on top in their division at the “Kick the COVID Tournament,” defeating each opponent in straight sets with the exception of Bingham. Against the Miners during pool play, the Chargers lost the first set before dominating the final two sets. In the finals, Corner Canyon beat Bingham in two sets to win the title.

New Canyons School District superintendent remains optimistic despite challenging transition times

nline schooling in response to COVID-19 pandemic. Earthquake and aftershocks along the Wasatch Front. Protests erupting in the streets. Masks required in Salt Lake County. Fire forcing Suncrest residents to evacuate to nearby Draper Park Middle.

“What’s next?” may be what many people are thinking, but Canyons School District new superintendent Rick Robins found a silver lining.

Robins said he is appreciative of the Utah lawmakers who decided to use the rainy day funds during the special session held in June. The result? Instead of being handed down a 2, 5 or 10% budget cut to public education, there is a 2% increase over this year’s base budget.

“I am so grateful to our legislature and our local legislators for stepping up to the plate and holding education harmless at a time when things are so uncertain,” Robins said. “What that means for Canyons is we’re able to go on and deliver first-class education and just a small sample size of that, to give you a little flavor of that, with that passing, Canyons was able to go ahead and add six new school nurses. And so, when you’re thinking about our students’ well-being, their health and their wellness returning to school what an awesome opportunity for us to complete that where if we were to face any of those budget cuts, that would not have been a possibility.”

17, Robins said it is a “fluid situation” and they will follow the guidelines of the governor, Salt Lake County Health Department, and Utah State Board of Education. As of late June, he said Canyons was planning for an in-person start, and if masks aren’t required, they would be recommended.

“It’s really important for everyone to understand that schools, not just in Canyons District, but across the state and the nation, will struggle to comply with 6-feet social distancing guidelines. Now having said that, what I have received from USBE (Utah State Board of Education) and from county health and the governor’s office is that if students are within 6 feet more than 15 minutes, then we would recommend that they mask up. We’re not going to require masks unless we’re told to by the health department or the governor’s office,” he said. “It presents a challenge, no doubt about it. We’re going to sanitize more often; our plans are to disinfect our buildings more often, all those things we can do. Masks will be provided for students and for teachers or employees. We’ll do everything we can to create the necessary distancing as possible, but it’s going to be impossible to comply with that 100%. We’ll do our best that way, there’s no way with the design of the buildings to ensure that students are 6 feet apart.”

While school may open, not all activities may be. While the Utah High School Activities Association regulates sporting events, Canyons Board of Education and the superintendent may make decisions about other activities.

“I would recommend that we start slower and what this really comes down to is contact tracing. If we do not have the ability to contact trace, for example, school dance, back to school night, or large assembly. If we don’t have the ability to contact trace then I’m asking or recommending that we either delay that for a future date or we look to an alternative way of doing that event,” Robins said. “I hope that everyone will be patient and considerate as we work through some of these issues. I think all of us want these activities to return. These activities are so important to so many kids and it really doesn’t matter what the activity is. For a lot of kids, this is their passion and it’s very important to them and their families. We’re going to do everything we can to see those things get off the ground.”

Families wishing to keep their children home to learn or have blended learning will be able to do that as online kindergarten through eighth-grade curriculum is being established this summer, he said. High school online curriculum already is in place.

While long-range goals are challenging during this time, Robins is focusing on his

immediate goals of finalizing a re-entry plan and to support conversations about the social unrest in the country.

“I think it’s important that as a school community, we understand and recognize the issues that are going on with social unrest in the country and in our own communities,” Robins said. “I think it’s important that we listen more, we learn more, and respect each other more. It’s something we all want. I believe with all my heart that the solution to this issue is through education and it always has been. As a school community collectively, we need to help our kids understand each other better and learn from each other better.

We need to be respectful of each other and that starts with me, and I’m right there and excited to lead that conversation.”

He hopes that Canyons Board of Education will approve reviewing the District’s curriculum and instructional practices, policies and procedures as well as student access to opportunities to ensure equity.

During his transition time, Robins received a call at 3 a.m. Sunday, June 28, notifying him that Draper Park Middle School would be used as an evacuation shelter due to a nearby fire.

“Just that event, in itself, reflects on the great collaboration that takes place in Canyons School District with their families— that in a given moment of need like that our schools are on the ready to support the families. There were district personnel that went out of their way at 2 and 3 o’clock in the morning to make sure those buildings were open and accessible. That’s such a great tribute to the community of how they can take care of each other. That’s a proud moment for all of us to relish on, that people really stepped up to support each other,” he said.

Robins was voted unanimously by the Canyons Board of Education April 14 to lead the District’s 34,000 students, replacing Jim Briscoe, who retired June 30. During June, Robins and Briscoe made decisions together.

Canyons Board of Education President Nancy Tingey is confident in the district’s new leadership.

“He is a proven leader in Utah public education,” she said. “I think he has a lot of great qualities that are going to benefit our district and help our district move forward, build on all the great things we have in place.

I have every confidence that Rick can lead the district through into the new now. He has the experience, the skills, and the attributes to work with the other educators, with the Board, as we move forward.”

Robins comes from Fillmore, where he played point guard on Millard High School’s basketball team, quarterback on the football team and shortstop, pitcher and first base on

the baseball team before deciding to pursue playing football in college. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern Utah University where he was inducted to the university’s hall of fame in 2013 after being a fouryear starter at quarterback. He received his master’s degree from Grand Canyon University and a doctorate in educational leadership from University of Nevada - Las Vegas.

His 25 years in education began as a history teacher at Copper Hills High School in Jordan School District and he worked as an assistant principal and principal in the Alpine, Nebo and Juab school districts. He also has coached high school boys football and girls basketball. His love of sports continues to this day and he often runs 5 miles per day to “decompress.”

As Juab High School principal, Robins was named Utah’s high school principal of the year in 2012 by his peers.

Under Robins’ leadership as superintendent, Juab School District was inducted into the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools in 2015 and the district was honored by the National School Boards Convention by the Center for Digital Education as a top 10 winner in 2018.

While students were at home during the “soft closure” in response to COVID-19 pandemic, Robins made his rounds around the schools, meeting principals and admiring the campuses.

“He’s very positive,” Willow Canyons Principal Marilyn Williams said. “He expresses appreciation. He said this is his dream job.”

He’s looking forward to meeting students this fall. It may be getting to know them while supporting activities and watching games, or Robins, a self-claimed lifelong fan of Dr. Seuss, said he may also slip into an elementary school to read to students.

“It does not matter what age, we can always look to Dr. Seuss and find some wisdom,” he said. “I’d really like to get out and meet our students and meet our parents and our communities in person to understand their needs and what those needs and requests are. Relationships are at the core of everything we do, and it starts with our students.

I hope that my time in Canyons and in other districts will exemplify that. At the end of the day it really is about doing what is best for our students and building relationship with each and every student that they feel part of their experience and they have goals and a pathway to achieve those.” l

choices make an impact on the larger world along with a coral community play area. The Zen garden area nearby is filled with cacti and succulents “to look like a coral bed,” said horticulturalist Lucas Proctor.

Other garden areas in the Plaza contain plants native to the different environments of Utah. The goal is to establish a botanical garden. “I am creating a lot of educational material specific to plants,” Proctor explained.

There is much for guests to explore on the Plaza in addition to these themed educational areas. The stone walkways, for example, are engraved with inspiring quotes from visionary thinkers ranging from Carl Sagan to Dr. Seuss.

The outdoor stage directly beneath EECO is intended to become a community gathering space. “It can be used for whatev-

er our imaginations come up with—music, dance, art, movie nights,” said Doggett. “We can create a fun time for the community.”

Special events on the plaza, such as adults-only evenings under the colorful, ever-changing lights of EECO, are planned.

Areas of the plaza will also be available for private rentals, from family gatherings to corporate picnics.

Scholarly trio are Draper’s newest royalty

raper City Hall has been closed to the public since March due to coronavirus, but its doors briefly opened June 16 to receive royalty. That evening, the mayor and city council members were introduced to the new Miss Draper and her two attendants, selected for their excellence in service, education, leadership and refinement. Anna Petersen spoke

about her experiences and shared a slide show from her year in service to the community as Miss Draper 2019.

Mandi Brady, a former Miss Draper herself, serves as volunteer chairperson for the organization. Brady has revised it in recent years to not be a standard pageant process, but a scholarship program involving a job appli-

cation, an essay and a resume, an interview and a defined service project for those who apply. “It’s an outstanding program and she’s got great vision,” Mayor Troy Walker said of Brady and her efforts.

Elle Stoker was crowned Miss Draper 2020. She graduated with honors from Corner Canyon High School (CCHS) in 2020 and served as Youth Mayor for the Draper City Mayor’s Youth Council. She also participated as an American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation Senator in Washington, D.C. and a Utah Association of Student Councils national representative. Stoker is the daughter of Anika Hoybjerg. Her initiative as Miss Draper will be “Amplifying the Small Voices” with a focus on children’s rights in abusive situations, providing them with an outlet to receive help. To that end, she founded the nonprofit The Children’s Voice Foundation to support that cause.

Stoker will attend Brigham Young University in the fall. “This is so exciting,” she said to her attendants immediately following the crowning ceremony. Stoker was awarded a $5,000 scholarship.

Cece Burridge was selected First Attendant. A 2020 graduate of CCHS, Burridge was the Sterling Scholar for Business and Marketing, DECA president and the Junior Women in Business representative for the South Valley

Chamber of Commerce. She is the daughter of Marissa and Christian Burridge. As First Attendant, she was awarded a $2,000 scholarship. She will attend Utah State University in the fall. Brady called Burridge a “gifted leader.”

Madison Gastelo was selected Second Attendant. Already a student at the University of Utah, she is majoring in kinesiology as a premed student with hopes of becoming an oncologist. She finished her sophomore semester on the dean’s List with a 4.0 GPA. Gastelo enjoys working with older adults and she participates with Meals on Wheels on a weekly basis. The daughter of George and Janna Gastelo, she was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Anna Petersen, Miss Draper 2019, just finished her freshman year at BYU after graduating as valedictorian from CCHS in 2019.

Her platform this past year was breast cancer awareness for women of all ages. Because of the pandemic, she began her year as Miss Draper with parades and community events and ended it with Zoom presentations and community outreach via social media. Petersen said that, of all the events she participated in, Draper Days and the Heritage Dinner were her favorites, “Because I got to talk to some of the older citizens about their memories,” she said.. l

Legendary JDCHS football coach hangs it up; new coach just moves over a chair

eading into his 21st season as the Juan Diego Catholic High School head football coach last fall, John Colosimo knew it would be his last – and he quietly informed his coaching staff. Then, he proceeded to do what he has always done: lead his team deep into the state playoffs for the 19th consecutive year.

This spring, the news of his retiring became official as arguably one of the most successful high school coaches in state history left the sidelines atop the Utah high school record books with eight state championships, including a threepeat from 2015 through 2017. During his 21-year span, he also led the Soaring Eagle program to 13 region titles and was recognized repeatedly with coaching honors, most notably the National Federation of High School Associations Coach of the Year award in 2004 and USA Today’s Best High School coach in Utah in 2013.

“John Colosimo is the football program,” Juan Diego Catholic High School Athletic Director Chris Long said when asked what the only football coach the school has ever known has meant to the campus that opened in 1999. “In the last 20 years, John’s teams have won over 80% of the games they played in. But, the thing that metrics cannot see is the love John’s players have had for him and the respect that his fellow coaches have for him.”

Morgan High School football coach Kovi Christiansen said, “John epitomizes everything that is special about a high school coach and an example of the type of coach that is fleeing far too fast from high school athletics. He has an uncanny knack for getting his players to believe in him and his system and I have been amazed by that for years. He extracts

every ounce of talent and energy that a player can give and they do it willingly for the coach they love and respect.”

Colosimo coached alongside his brother, Joe, who was his defensive coordinator and Greg Williams, who ran the offense, for the entire 21 seasons.

“John Colosimo is a pioneer and amazing coach that has stuck to his identity and shown that you don’t change a system to conform to the ‘new fads’ of what people see as today’s football,” Christiansen said. “He has been so successful doing what they do because of his amazing attention to detail.”

Colosimo will continue in his Academic Vice-Principal role at the school that was recently honored with a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence honor from the United States Department of Education.

“Yes, John is a great football coach, but he is an even better example of how we should interact with youth and adults alike,” Christiansen said. “Probably the best thing I can say about him is that the game, Juan Diego, and the state of Utah are so much better today thanks to John’s impact and legacy on those aware enough to allow this outstanding man to change us.”

So, with the retirement of Colosimo from coaching, and his brother Joe who went out with him, Williams decided to step into the head coaching spot after holding the offensive coordinator position. “I was prepared to coach with John forever and I was supposed to join them on their way out, but you always wonder if you can do it,” Williams said.

“Greg has been the offensive mastermind of the most successful high school team in Utah history. In the last 20 years, Juan Diego has averaged 37 points a game, far and away the best in

Utah,” Long said. “Greg is a soft spoken, humble person who gives the credit for Juan Diego’s success to John Colosimo.”

Williams has been involved with football since he started played at 8 years old. After playing for Bingham and Snow College, he got into the coaching ranks at Bingham and at Jordan High.

After seven years, he resigned. The very next day, he had a chance encounter with a Colosimo family member which ultimately led to Williams returning to coaching to be offensive coordinator at the newly-built Juan Diego Catholic. “I did not want to get back into coaching,” Williams said. “My wife encouraged me so I decided to help out a year or two to get them going.”

That was 21 years ago.

Williams, who has also been a P.E. teacher at the school the past five years, said he doesn’t anticipate making too many changes to the already successful Juan Diego program he was part of building as he now takes over the top job.

“There’s not really one thing that John did that I wouldn’t do,” he said.

“I’m demanding and push for attention to details through learning from film and putting in solid effort on the field. I’ll just go with what I’ve learned from all of my mentors. Coaching’s all about stealing.”

Assisting Williams this season will be former Utah Blaze coach Ron James, who spent nearly 30 years in the collegiate and professional ranks and will be the defensive coordinator, and former JDCHS All-State running back Tana Vea who will head up the offense, along with special teams coordinator Danny Larson.

Also on the coaching staff are Mike Ashmore, Taylor Campbell, Paul Ceballos, D’Shaun Crockett, Connor Dumont, Ben Farrar, Andrew Markosian, Keegan Mataele and John Morby.

Juan Diego’s top returning players for 2020 are Michael Clay, Logan Huggard, Michael Hulverson, Dominic Lewis, Trace Monson, John-Sione Vea, Diego Valdez and Kayden Viczian.

T

his fall, schools will look different enough with the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but some students will see changes in their administrators as some retired amidst the soft closure of school and others have moved on to other schools.

The Draper Park Middle School Vikings will see Chip Watts as their new principal, replacing Mary Anderson, who retired.

“I’m excited for the new opportunity,” Watts said. “I got the scoop from a lot of people that Draper Park is a high- achieving school, but there’s always room to improve so I’d like to see it become the best it can be. I’d like to make more relationships with the community and unite the school within the community.”

Before school began, Watts joined Draper Park Assistant Principal Randall Seltz to drive the boundaries of the school.

He also met several teachers and learned about the Viking Scholars program, which was similar to Union’s Bobcat Award, where, before Draper Park, Anderson was principal and Watts was an assistant principal under her.

“It’s a great awards program and I’m familiar with Mary’s programs and leadership. I’m excited to work here in this community,” he said.

Watts was recently honored with Canyons School District’s APEX administrator award and was named Utah PTA administrator of the year.

Channing Hall students lead the state in STEM competition

I

t’s been three years and only a few schools’ teams have managed to get a couple spots each year in the state’s top STEM competition results.

That’s because Channing Hall has claimed most of them.

This year wasn’t an exception as they allowed only one school to place in the top nine places in the eCybermission national STEM competition.

And one of Channing Hall’s teams, the Automators, were regional finalists, winners of a $1,000 savings bond, and named to the top five teams in the western United States.

First-place team members each receive $1,000 savings bonds. Those are the Automators (Esun Tafa, Kyler Harris, and Coleman West) in sixth grade and Energizer Dragons (Natalia Mendoza, Ava Brinkerhoff and Lyla Sylvia) in seventh grade.

Second-place team members received a $500 bond. Channing Hall swept all second-places with WDKY (Arianna Larson, Lottie Robison and Kyra Gordon) in sixth grade, The Bight Ideals (Kelton Tippets, Venkata Sura and Gage Woodbury) in seventh, and Plastic Pollution Preventers (Katie

Honorable mention teams included Fire Foxes (Erin Astin, Jayda Runia and Isabelle Gunther) in sixth grade, Lifeless Waters (Hunter Shurtleff, Mia Dalley, River Jones and Wyatt Thornton) in seventh grade and Out of this World (Sophia Ebert, Vivian Fehrenbach and Jensen Hornbaker) in eighth grade.

About 5,000 teams across the U.S. participate in the competition.

“I really like eCybermission,” said Jenny McIntosh, who advised the younger teams. “I like that at the beginning of the year, we’re introducing a different way to think about how to improve things around us—and we tie it into the core curriculum. I liked how students are researching and discussing their ideas and taking what interests them into their own learning. Through eCybermission, they’re learning firsthand, the engineering and scientific processes. I like how we reach out to improve and make an impact in our community and our world. That’s the core of IB (international baccalaureate program which Channing Hall offers to its primary and middle years students).”

McIntosh said that the school puts a priority on the competition.

“We jump right on it at the beginning of the school year and coordinate with our Think Lab,” she said. “So many of our students want to do engineering projects rather than pure science experiments. There’s a shift where they are understanding the engineering process, identifying a problem or issue in the community and finding a way to improve it to make a difference.”

Students brainstorm, noticing what is around them, what interests them, what ideas they have to make things better in their world, she said.

With the Automators, two of the three students are musicians and identified turning pages of their music as an idea. Their solution—they created a music page-turner prototype controlled by a foot pedal.

“At first, it didn’t work well, but it seldom works how you want it the first time. But they learned the process and learned from their errors and explored why it didn’t work,” McIntosh said.

For some projects students collected their own data as team WDKY did. They looked into what types of activities work best for students before test-taking, from meditation to exercise to candy. Another team, Fire Foxes, wanted to know if color affects the way a person interprets taste and had fellow students sample colored vanilla ice cream.

Jeff Meyers, who advised the seventh- and eighth-grade teams, said his students looked into things that may affect them firsthand at school such as how different drinks affect productivity and if sunlight is important for academic development, to more global issues such as designing, in this case, a remote-controlled boat dragging a net, to get trash out of the ocean or specifically, how to get plastic out of the ocean by using bamboo nets. A group even designed and tested a water filtration method that would turn saltwater into fresh water.

He said that the online format allowed students to compete while other competitions were postponed or put on hold as many in-person events were in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s good because it has been a weird year with the coronavirus,” Meyers said. “Our kids did well. Some take it really seriously and have high expectations. It’s great our kids did so well and nice to see our school name out there.” l

hree years ago, Canyons School District leaders gave a banner to Eastmont Middle to congratulate the school’s teacher of the year as they do every year. That year it inspired someone who had yet to be hired by the district.

Eastmont Principal Stacy Kurtzhals remembered interviewing Emma Moss for a teaching position.

“When she came in for an interview, she saw the banner outside and told me, ‘That’s my goal; my name is going to be on it,’” Kurtzhals said. “Emma’s just a rock star. She’s very engaging; she’s creative. She’s a constant learner; she’s very techy. She’s very eager to take on anything, and then, she’s teaching us what she learns. She doesn’t sleep, I swear.”

This spring, Moss kept her promise and was named Canyons District’s teacher of the year.

As Canyons’ teacher of the year, she receives a $1,000 cash prize from the Jordan Credit Union and will represent the 34,000-student district in this fall’s annual Utah Teacher of the Year selection process, which is part of the national teacher of the year program.

Earlier this year, Moss was named Utah’s new Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year.

Other finalists in this year’s selection process included Albion Middle mathematics teacher Mary Simao, Crescent Elementary first-grade teacher Marci Reeves, and Hillcrest special education teacher Becca Remy. They all received $500 cash prizes from Jordan Credit Union.

Every teacher who represented the District’s 47 schools and programs received a gift basket packed with $500 in donated items from local businesses.

While the teacher of the year announcement was made on Facebook Live to maintain social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, Moss and the other finalists were there in person.

“It was very exciting, humbling and a great honor,” she said. “I just do whatever I can do to help.”

During her three years teaching, doing “whatever” has meant changing classes and grades every year she’s taught, learning new curriculum, earning her endorsements and preparing challenging, yet engaging lessons. She also has volunteered to help write curriculum for a new digital literacy course for the district and is guiding others statewide on the standards—that is, when she isn’t advising the 35 members of student council.

“I’ve done hard things before, but I’m modeling life-learning to my students,” she said. “I want them to learn I’m learning so I can teach them. I love working with students so much, it’s what I want to do—to keep learning, keep developing ideas, to stay teaching. This is where I fit in in this world.”

During this spring’s soft closure of schools, Kurtzhals said Moss was there, leading the transformation to digital learning on the Canvas learning platform and Google Meet video meetings alongside the school’s education technology coach.

“She is always the first to reach out and support the other teachers and staff members,” she said. “She already had infused technology into her classrooms and was ready to implement it online.”

Moss said as Europe closed down in response to COVID-19, she started preparing herself and to coach her colleagues.

“We’re much stronger together than apart,” she said. “We’re not on an island to get off on our own. We’re doing this together and need to come together with our creative ways.”

Moss jumped into teaching digital literacy when there was a need at Eastmont. That has meant that she has written grants—resulting in poster-sized checks hanging around her room—to introduce students to Nearpod, coding, Spheros, virtual reality, stop mo-

tion, Flipgrid and other forms of technology.

“I want to give them lots of opportunity. I’m grateful for the grants and the district has fulfilled my dreams of helping my students learn,” Moss said. “I want students to see these are from the grants and that they, too, can achieve great things in life if they pursue opportunities.”

Kurtzhals said Moss also acquired computers to use in her teaching. Borrowing a lab coat, Moss has donned safety goggles and helped her students with their lesson—the dissection of a computer.

“They take it apart, treat it as organs of a body, asking what it is, how it works, why it works. She lets them take it apart, but they also have to be able to put it back in working order,” Kurtzhals said.

Just because students were at home, Moss didn’t want them to stop learning.

“I want them to continue learning online even if being at home brings up different challenges,” she said. “I want to continue integrating opportunities for students if we start this fall in-person, online or in some blended format. We need to build relationships, have fun and laugh together, connect even if we are social distancing. I will find a way to make connections because it’s important—even if I have to wear a mask and gloves to see students.”

Moss reached out to all Eastmont students while online, inviting them to participate in lunchtime trivia games.

“She wants to keep connected with the kids, to be a friend to them, to make them feel appreciated and loved, to show how she cares about each and every one of them,” Kurtzhals said.

However, this year’s teacher of the year almost wasn’t. Moss was planning to be a neurosurgeon when she started post-secondary schooling at Brigham Young University. Luckily for Canyons students, Moss wasn’t a fan of molecular biology.

“I love learning,” she said. “I love helping others learn and making a difference.” l

Alta High graduates first to use new performing arts center; remodeling continues

I

t wasn’t the traditional commencement, but Alta High graduates had something special added to their celebration—they were the first to use the school’s new performing arts center.

Spaced 6 feet apart because of the guidelines for the COVID-19 pandemic, Alta’s Madrigals sang the national anthem and a variation of the Irish blessing on the steps in the foyer, which in early May was still undergoing finishing touches, about five months behind schedule.

Graduating senior vocalist Brianne Crismon and musicians Ebony Liu, Olivia Bradley and Ellie Gehrett also performed in the foyer.

While the auditorium sits 1,400, senior class president Anderson Da Silva Leguizamon spoke to a nearly empty hall as the celebration was videotaped, pieced together and made available on the school website.

Others speaking for the videotaped commencement include seniors Caroline Wolf and Katie Drennan, Principal Brian McGill, Canyons Board of Education member Chad Iverson and Canyons School District Superintendent Jim Briscoe. Assistant Superintendent Bob Dowdle certified the class of 2020.

Likewise, graduating seniors had to sign up to walk across the stage individually— and get their first glimpses of the inside of the free-standing performing arts center west of the main entrance—and be photographed with their principal, to a not-filled auditorium, in keeping with the guidelines of the state and county health departments.

In the graduation video’s final scene, a handful of seniors, sitting every few seats from each another in the first few rows, move their tassels to signify their passing of the rites, sing the school song and throw up their motarboards in celebration.

Construction at the school and on the new auditorium began in June 2018 with the direction of “make it look brand new,” said Brian Peterson, VCBO Architecture associate.

“Alta was hit hard when Corner Canyon opened up seven years ago, so we wanted to bring Alta up to show how beautiful a building it is,” he said.

The performing arts center, designed to blend in with the nearby Wasatch landscape, stands on the northwest corner of the campus and has large letters spelling Alta and electronic marquees to announce upcoming events—or in

this case, showcase graduating seniors’ photos.

A reflective mirror entrance allowed graduates to take memorable photos.

Large acoustic wall panels—the 11th tallest in the world and tallest in the United States— lend balance to the sound in the auditorium, according to Peterson.

“They were also faster in terms of construction and it was more economical,” he said.

The auditorium features a full fly loft and an orchestra pit. There are 12 wheelchair seats and elevators to ensure it is ADA accessible. Seventy feet above the stage is the catwalk and rigging, and below stage, is the center’s own air conditioning and heating system.

“We want it to feel bigger than it is so we have designed the auditorium to be darker at the floor to lighter near the ceiling so it really pops,” Peterson said.

Behind the stage, there are rooms for costume changes, a green room to warm up in for musical or theatrical productions, and a makeup room with ample lighting as well as storage spaces. Immediately outside the auditorium are men’s and women’s restrooms with 16 stalls, and a couple unisex restrooms.

Assistant Principal Garry True said he could have retired, but after spending years talking over the plans and with his background in construction, he “wanted to see this through.”

While there isn’t enough seats for the entire student body, True said they will likely continue to hold multiple school assemblies.

“I’m just proud of how it has turned out,” he said. “The whole project is going to be kind of awesome.”

From the performing arts center, students can walk east across the new courtyard with cement benches that are shaped to spell Alta.

Above the courtyard are hanging outdoor lights.

On the west wall of the 42-year-old building, new 18-feet tall windows are being installed to allow more natural lighting.

Alta counselor Christine Astle, who has worked 12 years at the school, is especially excited for that.

“With our windows and natural lighting, we will have a lighter feeling inside,” she said. “Until you’re inside the old school, you don’t realize how uninviting it was without windows.”

Some students will forever be memorialized in those classrooms as they painted on the walls—and instead of those walls being torn down, they will be hidden behind new walls.

“They weren’t supposed to, so those in the future, if they are ever uncovered, will know who they were,” True said with a smile.

There will be a secure vestibule, a Hawk lounge, an alumni room, a career center, a tech atrium, updated kitchen, new green room for broadcasts, and a remodeled commons area that is designed to be “open, bright, functional, flexible” and will have its roof raised 20 feet to allow skylight installation for even more natural lighting.

The commons and lunchroom and new offices will be completed in winter 2020, said Leon Wilcox, business manager and chief financial officer.

The former auditorium will have its seats removed and the floor leveled and converted to a choir and band suite while the stage will turn into a 100-seat black box theatre.

Also being updated are the lights in the classrooms; a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system; an audio-alarm system; the gymnasium floor, a soccer field and stadium lights. Already, the school has been using a new field house, that overlooks the track and football field, that opened last September.

The cost of Alta’s remodeling and construction is $53.5 million, Wilcox said. It was funded as one of several projects in the $283-million bond approved in November 2017.

Architect Peterson said that a construction crew of about 90 from Hughes General Contractors have been working on the school, with some delays—such as carpeting—because of COVID-19.

“Just because students aren’t here, doesn’t mean it’s quiet,” assistant principal True said. “It’s exciting to take the building from a design stage more than two years ago, to seeing it come into realization.” l

Celebrities share Tik Tok videos about being “stranded” in their $6.5 million log cabins where everyone has their own TV, floor, masseuse, trampoline and personal chef. I’m not belittling their suffering, I’m just . . . well, I guess I am.

For common folk, trampolines are as hard to find as Lysol wipes. Puzzles, board games and sidewalk chalk are valuable commodities on the black market (along with livers, since we’ve been day- drinking for

months).

Everyone is heading outside to escape.

Extended families stretch the “No large gathering” rules to the max because COVID wouldn’t ruin the annual family reunion, right? Lakes, canyons, national parks and camp sites are packed with people who thought they were the only ones who needed a break from looking at the same dirty carpeting for one more day.

I’ve been on several hikes this summer, sometimes with the puppy, sometimes with the grandkids. Not necessarily relaxing, but at least we take the fight to a different location.

My latest hike was tackling Bell’s Canyon with my daughter and three of my grandkids, including a 3- and 4-year-old. If that sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel, you are correct.

Before we even started up the trail the complaining began.

“I’m so hot.” “The trail is too steep.”

“The dirt is too dirty.” “I’m so thirsty.”

My daughter told me to shut up and set a better example, but it was too late. The littles were soon echoing my whines at super-high decibel levels. I ended up confiscating water bottles after a good portion was dumped onto the trail to make mud. I explained to the toddlers what happens when you dehydrate. They didn’t care.

It took roughly five days to make our way to the reservoir where the kids splashed in the cool water, tossed wet sand at each other, threw crackers at the ducks, slipped on the rocks and screamed at the dragonflies.

I considered calling in a rescue helicopter, figuring the expense was worth not having to walk back down the trail. Instead, we bribed the kids with McDonald’s, promising processed chicken parts if they’d walk faster than a drugged porcupine. We made it back to the car exhausted, sunburned and

grumpy – just like a normal summer hike!

Backyards are also being used to their fullest. Our luxurious backyard pool (a 6’ wading pool from Walmart) is usually a weird shade of green and full of dead bugs, but that doesn’t stop us from soaking in the probably dangerous water, eating popsicles. If I don’t get sick from COVID, malaria might be another option.

The grandkids set up a tent a couple of weeks ago, hoping to have a backyard campout.

They roasted marshmallows over the grill and climbed into their sleeping bags only to be shaken awake two hours later by a microburst that threatened to carry them to Oz. Everyone was safe, but traumatized, which seems to be the status quo in these crazy times.

Returning to school is the big debate right now, followed by what should be a strange Halloween and holiday season.

Sure makes eternity feel like a really long time. l
