BENGAL BOULEVARD ROUNDABOUT PLANS MOVE ALONG

T

he finalized design and anticipated construction deadline for the long-awaited Bengal Boulevard roundabout project has been determined. The roundabout, which will replace two intersections along Bengal Boulevard at 2300 East and 2325 East, will be constructed during summer 2021.

“We have been working on this for about eight years now to get the best possible roundabout for this community,” said Senior Staff Engineer Adam Ginsberg.

Multiple presentations were held detailing this project. On Oct. 3, Public Works Director Matt Shipp presented the roundabout’s design to the Cottonwood Heights City Council. On Nov. 12, the Cottonwood Heights Public Works Department held an open house for the public, presenting the design and receiving additional public comment. Both a virtual and physical open house were held.

“We’ve gone through about four iterations of this roundabout,” Shipp said. “It’s not quite a roundabout—more like an egg-about or circle-about, if you will.”

The finalized roundabout design includes powered lights for each of the 10 crosswalks, arrows for bicyclists, dedicated bike ramps, landscaping and five entrances/exits.

The landscaping concept for the island within the roundabout includes “a foundation of rocks with various trees and shrubs on the interior of the roundabout,” Ginsberg said.

which are to improve pedestrian safety, traffic safety, improve air quality and reduce emissions, and reduce traffic delay.

Over the past few years planning this project, many concerns were voiced by residents.

“The main concerns we heard were about pedestrian safety, traffic and bikes,” Shipp said.

There will be an entrance/exit linked to Brighton High School which will lead directly to the main parking lot for the school. Shipp

and others met with the school’s Community Council to talk through concerns related to student safety and how to best facilitate the related pedestrian and vehicle student traffic.

Shipp explained how roundabouts are generally safer than four-way intersections from an engineering perspective. In four-way intersections, there are 32 points of conflict.

Roundabouts reduce those conflict points to eight. In addition, roundabouts generally necessitate slower traffic speeds from 15 to 20 mph.

Roundabout accidents are generally safer, as T-bone accidents are less likely to occur. “Roundabout accidents don’t have big impacts,” Shipp said, emphasizing how most

accidents within roundabout are typically brush-bys.

Roundabouts generally lessen idling impacts as well. The Bengal Boulevard roundabout is anticipated to reduce emissions by 4.37 tons per year.

In order to construct the roundabout, two residential homes will be demolished. As they have been identified as historic homes, a pocket park with an interpretive plaque calling attention to the two homes will be placed in their absence.

As for larger and emergency vehicles, engineers are confident their design will be appropriate. “We have made sure the largest truck can go through without having to make circles to go where it needs to go,” Shipp said.

“We navigate roundabouts in other areas,” said Unified Fire Authority Assistant Chief Riley Pilgrim. “Our crews will learn to navigate this one effectively, so I have no concerns.” “(Shipp) addressed every concern we have,” said Cottonwood Heights Police Chief Robby Russo. “We still might have to educate some residents but that’s OK.” The Bengal Boulevard roundabout project will cost $2.9 million—$2.5 million for construction costs funded by the Federal Transportation Improvement Program (CMAQ) and $427,000 for right-of-way acquisition funded by the Salt Lake County Corridor Preservation Fund.

roundabout will begin in summer 2021, when students are out of school. The city will be requiring one lane of traffic to be open at all times along the Bengal Boulevard and 2300 East intersection during construction.

Brighton among local high schools to welcome UHSAA’s newest sport: girls wrestling

hile all high school sports coaches are trying to navigate seasons with new COVID-19 mandates, Utah’s wrestling coaches are facing another challenge—how to incorporate a girls’ program into their long existing boys’ programs.

Although girls have long participated in boys wrestling, the Utah High School Athletics Association (UHSAA) is sanctioning girls wrestling for the first time this year.

Now girls will have their own place where they can compete against other girls across the state.

“I anticipate girls wrestling to not only grow but also to draw a crowd, as much of a crowd as any other girls’ sport. I think that it’s a great opportunity for young women to find success,” said coach Kim Weaver, Brighton’s first girls wrestling coach.

tion and coaches to decide how to move forward with the girls wrestling program, both Brighton and Jordan high schools separately came to the same conclusion—a coed program. Similar to how high school cross country and swimming teams are set up, boys and girls will train together.

“We practice and train in the same room and have one big Brighton wrestling family,” Weaver said. “We just compete separately.”

The decision to add girls wrestling as a UHSAA sport came after years of high school girls competing in boys’ competitions.

Girls will now be able to train alongside their male teammates but won’t have to compete against them. Wrestling fans and coaches alike hope this will increase turnout for this up-and-coming sport.

“I’ve seen plenty of girls handle themselves against boys. But for other girls it’s

an opportunity to wrestle girls and feel more comfortable,” said Jordan coach Luis Cruz.

Cruz, in his first year at Jordan, accepted a job as the head girls wrestling coach in its inaugural year. Although there are many firsts for Cruz this year, his athletes are lucky to have an experienced coach. Cruz moves to Jordan after five years at West High School where he worked with the wrestling team.

During his time there he was able to coach many successful girls, most notably Mia May, a three-time Utah club state champ.

Some moves, like the half-nelson, Cruz knows won’t be as common in girls wrestling. The half-nelson is a well-known wrestling hold in which an athlete pins an opponent down by putting a hand under their arm and locking it at the neck.

“There’s a couple of techniques that we can’t teach the girls, they’re more flexible than the boys. Girls can get out of half-nelsons because they have great mobility in their shoulders,” Cruz said.

Coaches at Brighton and Jordan plan to teach techniques to both boys and girls but work on those moves in separate groups. In wrestling, the feel of an opponent’s body forces athletes to adjust on the spot. Coaches will be able to critique form more accurately when practiced in different groups.

Although many head coaches will be new to girls wrestling, any coach with wrestling experience should be up to the task.

Veteran coaches have learned to make adjustments for different weight classes.

“Heavy weights don’t wrestle the same as 106 (pounds), but in practice we give everyone the opportunity to learn the same skills,” Weaver said. “When we move to live wrestling, we allow them to use the combina-

tions that work well for them and then coach them as individuals.”

Girls wrestling is one of the fastest growing women’s sports in the United States and Utah is among the first 20 states to sanction it as a high school sport. This progressive decision will allow girls more opportunities to participate in high school athletics. High school students who participate in sports are more likely to graduate high school and pursue higher education.

“I’m so happy to see it sanctioned. It gives the girls in the building another opportunity, another sport to try and build upon their high school resume. That’s what it’s all about, giving kids more opportunities,” Cruz said.

With only a small percentage of high school athletes moving on to college and professional athletics, administrators know that participation in sports provides students with lessons that reach beyond the court, field or mat. As an individual endurance sport, wrestlers learn how to persevere in a difficult match even when they are alone on the mat.

“I hope that as we build the girls program here that we can build strong women who can confront not only obstacles and challenges on the mat, but in life with the same resilience, tenacity and determination that one needs on the mat,” Weaver said.

Both Weaver and Cruz are ecstatic to take the lead at their prospective schools. As they welcome girls into the wrestling room, they can’t wait to start helping their athletes learn a new skill.

As Weaver says, “Women are powerful.

This is just another opportunity for them to show it.” l

Middle-schoolers debate in-person, adhering to safety precautions

ndian Hills eighth-grader Gabe Lowe was ready to face his competitors in late October as he went head-to-head in Canyons School District’s first in-person middle school debate and speech tournament of the school year.

“I like debating and get most out of it going against others,” said the three-year veteran. “There are big issues this year, like police reform, COVID-19 and topics that relate more to Utah than previous years. I’m able to have better speeches and facts and glad I have a chance to compete.”

With so many extracurricular activities curtailed during the COVID-19 pandemic, District English Language Arts Specialist Leslie Robinett said she was glad to give students an opportunity to compete in one. As the school year began, Robinett met with debate and speech coaches at all seven Canyons middle schools where it was decided as long as it’s safely possible, the tournaments will be held.

However, there are a few differences, such as teams are separated by school in different locations to keep them in smaller groups. Each round is posted in several places and announcements were provided over the intercom to reduce congregating. There also was not an in-person end-of-tournament celebration and awards ceremony as the results with medals and trophies were given to coaches with a videotaped announcement the following week.

“Our coaches felt that there would be a lot more social distancing than during school as we could really spread out,” she said, adding that holding it online was discussed. “The teachers also felt that holding it in person is important as when students talk in front of a judge is different than talking to a computer.”

tournament site of Indian Hills Middle was reviewed and Albion’s and Eastmont’s teams took two school buses to ensure there was enough social distancing.

The tournament size also was restricted, with no out-of-district teams invited. As it turned out, for various reasons, only Indian Hills, Eastmont, Mt. Jordan and Albion’s full teams competed, along with a few from Draper Park, reducing the number to about 250 students.

Sanitizer was abundant and concessions were eliminated.

“We’re trying to provide the opportunity as much as normal while making it as safe as possible,” Robinett said, adding however, the elementary tournament would be judged by video submissions this year.

“It’s fun to voice my opinions in my speech,” he said, adding that he participated the two previous years.

Albion coach Emma Coates took about 35 students to the tournament, most who are in her course, which she is providing on the Canvas learning management platform.

“It’s made me rethink our system, and make positive changes,” said the eight-yearcoach. “In the past, I would teach the basics; this year, I have assignments that force them to learn skills that may have seen optional in the past and weren’t always practiced.”

She said that many of those are skills that can translate to other classes and to life.

“One thing I love most about debate is that so many skills relate to the rest of their lives—the quality of their thoughts, researching, expressing disagreement, being organized, learning to be part of a team—there’s so much,” said Coates, who judged the online

national middle school tournament this past summer.

She also is making students understand that mask-wearing doesn’t limit communication, but gives them a chance to convey it more besides through words.

“We learn about and practice body expression,” she said. “We have our debaters practice at a distance from each other, but speaking up louder. We’ll have a specific lesson on enunciation and on learning about hand gestures before the next tournament.”

Coates said that the in-person Canyons tournament went smoothly.

“Things went so much better than we thought it would,” she said. “We didn’t have as many middle school students even with the teams that competed because some students are being quarantined, but it gave them motivation to really research hard and practice. They had the fire and passion and that wouldn’t be there if it was virtual. I asked the kids about it and without hesitation, 100% yes, they wanted the competition and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.”

Indian Hills coach Gage Pulsifer said about 30 members of his 103-member team were quarantined.

“It has been tough as some kids haven’t had as much time together this year,” he said, referring to the week delay start to the school year as well as quarantine time.

“We had some kids really want to participate so they were able to take the quick test (for COVID-19) and able to compete in the tournament. They spend time working on their speeches and research, so the tournament gives them a sense of accomplishment.”

While quarantined, many students would virtually connect with those in the classroom and debate one another.

“We had a little delay, but it’s students wanting to be part of this. We’re also learning that it’s taking a little longer to get ready as we didn’t finish last school year (because of the soft closure of schools at the outbreak of the pandemic),” the four-year coach said.

Pulsifer said after watching the initial

presidential debate, students have appreciated what they’ve learned in class: “There are two sides of an argument and that they need to listen and present the civil discussion with facts so they can back up what is being said.”

As students watch the news and talk about current events such as social unrest and voting, they also need to understand there are different viewpoints based on different life experiences.

“We need to understand that the world is not black and white, we can’t be polar opposed. We need to find that middle ground,” he said.

At Eastmont, Corey Jensen and Cody West coached about 60 kids at the tournament and said that they, too, also had class discussions about the first presidential debate.

“They know that’s not how a debate should go, but many of the topics during this year—the pandemic, social unrest, Black Lives Matter, voting rights and the importance of democracy, and others—is really inspiring students,” said seven-year coach Jensen, adding that he was a little surprised that the tournament was able to be held when so many activities have been canceled during the pandemic. “It’s important, especially right now, we need a sense of community and give our students a chance to be involved as part of team and be able to connect to school,” he said. “A lot of students play sports and have those opportunities, but a lot of others don’t, and debate gives them those same values.”

West, who has been co-head coach for three years, said he was happy the tournament was held and that even with the changes to the tournament, students were excited to take part.

“We still had the same vibe on the way here, the same sense of nervousness,” he said.

“It created a sense of normalcy for the most part and that’s needed; the kids are excited.”

As long as conditions allow, the next Canyons tournaments will be held Dec. 17, March 18, 2021 and April 29, 2021. The middle school state tournament is slated for May 6, 2021.l

High school robotics students Zoom in to AMES virtual robotics competition

I

n December, high school teams from across the state will come together online to learn the results of the first virtual robotics contest.

The contest, hosted by Academy of Math, Engineering and Science (AMES) in Murray, has been an annual tradition to kickoff the high school FIRST robotics season, that begins in January. This year, the sixth annual contest was moved to the online platform, as the school itself is offering classes virtually this fall.

“Kids are deserving, and we want to give them every opportunity so we hope this is a way they can safety learn and compete,” AMES robotics coach Sara Whitbeck said.

However, the outlook of the FIRST season is unclear as the FIRST Lego League and FIRST Tech Challenge programs are competing remotely as regions are unable to hold in-person competitions, which usually attract large spectator crowds.

In late September, FIRST said it would include extending the high school robotics season, having remote engagement options, having a similar robotics challenge to last year and offering free FIRST home activities as part of its COVID-19 modifications.

It also announced that as of then, with ongoing challenges of limited space, tools and robots for teams with remote and hybrid

learning and limited opportunities for teams to travel, the season experience would not include in-person game play. However, the organization would re-evaluate their decision in January when this year’s challenge will be announced.

Last year’s FIRST robotics competition was cut short at regional qualifiers with the soft closure of schools nationwide because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Utah was able to hold its regional qualifier in early March 2020, a week before Utah schools shut down. However, many teams had planned to travel to Idaho in late March to attend that competition, but that was canceled as was the national tournament.

Whitbeck said that a positive addition to this years’ AMES preseason competition is the hope to attract teams outside of the Salt Lake Valley since they wouldn’t have to travel.

During the month of November, robotics students learned about the competition rules and had a chance to videotape the components and submit it.

One component of the competition that excited Whitbeck was creating a tutorial, which other teams could view to help them learn how to perfect some skill. Part of the philosophy of FIRST is “coopertition,”

meaning competing always, but assisting and enabling others.

“We can then use these tutorials as a resource and library, which will help teams in normal years,” she said. “We hope teams will pick their strength or a skill they want to develop, whether it’s the electrical system, recruiting, business aspects and in a way, it will mentor others.”

Mentorship is something that is part of the culture of FIRST robotics whether it’s helping younger teams or lending a hand to another high school team.

Two years ago, AMES’ 35-member team recently mentored the start-up team at Cottonwood High, as the two schools share the same building, to a successful season, competing side-by-side at nationals. Since then, Cottonwood has moved its robotics lab closer to AMES so they’re able to collaborate from ideas to equipment.

Even so, AMES students were only doing some of their usual preseason preparations this fall, Whitbeck said, between being online and not knowing what this coming season will look like.

they’re passing it along student to student, but it’s not in an organized space as usual,” she said. “Usually, we have hundreds of hours easily and students are here two to four times per week and would have been here in the summer working behind the scenes. This year, we’re hoping we’ll be able to compete.” l

Proper sanitation practices vital for preventing disease in emergency situations

s part of emergency preparedness in the city of Cottonwood Heights, quarterly presentations on personal preparedness are given by Be Ready Utah. On Nov. 5, Brian Stinson discussed sanitation and hygiene operations for emergency situations.

“Most people don’t think about sanitization at all for their emergency preparedness,” Stinson said during the virtual meeting. This commonly leads to people becoming lazy and apathetic with their sanitization practices.

Not prioritizing sanitation during an emergency situation may lead to disease such as typhoid, dysentery, diarrhea and cholera. Stinson shared that during the 2010 Haiti earthquake a professional shelter was not disposing of waste properly, which led to over 1 million people becoming sick from cholera.

“The No. 1 rule is to keep yourself and living environment clean,” Stinson said.

In an emergency situation, individuals and family units should be prepared to take care of human waste. In order to do so properly, Be Ready Utah recommends a kit to prepare at least two disposal receptacles.

“Liquids and solids will need to be separated,” Stinson explained. “A combination of liquid and solid human waste is extremely

toxic. Separating them reduces toxicity.”

A two-bucket system is recommended. For the liquid-specific bucket, emptying safely and rinsing after use is recommended.

For the solid-specific bucket, more dedication is needed. To set up, the receptacle should be completely dry before lining with two garbage bags. Then, a layer of kitty litter should be added to the bottom. As human waste gets deposited, it should be covered with kitty litter routinely.

An existing toilet may be best to use for either of these recommended receptacles. If using a toilet for solid waste, make sure to fully scrub and dry out the toilet of water.

Line the toilet bowl with a large heavy-duty garbage bag. Then, place a layer of kitty litter at the bottom of the bag.

In setting up a restroom during an emergency situation, consider privacy and proximity. Stinson recommends using an already existing bathroom. In addition, considerations should be made for young children, elderly, and others with accessibility adaptability.

Individuals may need to be taught how to use these facilities, as they function a little differently in the event that indoor plumbing and/or sewage infrastructure is compromised.

When disposing of human waste, make sure to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Recommended equipment includes heavy dishwashing gloves, eye and breathing protection and non-slip footwear.

If you’re in a home, Stinson suggests knowing where the infrastructure is in your yard so you don’t disturb any pipes. If you’re not in a home, consider a community disposal site with the same considerations that can be agreed upon by the neighborhood. For every living situation, consider multiple places for human waste disposal.

Dig a hole 200 feet from any living area or water supply. The hole should end up being about 3 feet deep and 2.5 feet in diameter.

And make sure to have toilet paper. For both kitty litter and toilet paper supply, it is recommended to have “as much as you have room and budget for,” Stinson said.

“Some people think they can just go behind a tree and that will be good enough,” Stinson said. Such a mindset can lead to human waste being spread around, disease transmission, petrified waste in soil, and an attractive element for pests (animals and insects alike).

In short, here is the suggested to-do list:

gather the supplies needed for a hand-washing station and a two-bucket potty kit; have sufficient supplies for laundry and dishes; make sure to have a good supply of cleansers and disinfectants (Stinson mentioned that most have a one-year shelf life), and identify a safe ground spot of disposal ahead of time.

‘The show must go on’—Does it? How? To what extent?

fter several high schools along the Wasatch Front were closed for two weeks or brought back on hybrid schedules, theatre teachers are questioning the old adage, “the show must go on” and to what extent.

“We take that scenario, ‘the show must go on,’ and change it to ‘one show at a time,’ and ‘one day at a time,’” said theatre teacher Adam Wilkins, who’s school, Cottonwood High, was shut down and students learned remotely two weeks in mid-October. “It’s really, whatever works well for high school theatre departments and their communities.”

Wilkins had planned the typical November musical performance of “Joseph,” only with a reduced cast size of 50 students. That now has been pushed back to 7 p.m., Dec. 3-5 and again on Dec. 7. There also will be a noon matinee on Dec. 5.

“We put recordings of our choreography on YouTube so our students can do their part and practice,” he said while the school was online and no in-person rehearsals were allowed. “We’re trying to keep the kids safe.

So, we adapt to how we can do live theatre safely. We wear masks, wash hands, sanitize, decrease numbers of kids, practice intentionally in small numbers of ensembles, and follow the Salt Lake County health guidelines.”

Wilkins said that at Cottonwood, patrons—only 500 of the 3,000 seats will be filled and they’ll sit socially distanced—can expect to see the performers in matching black masks.

“We’ll wear masks at performances and rehearsals. That’s nonnegotiable,” he said.

That’s not the same criteria at all high schools as each district determines what’s best for its communities. Nearby Murray High School allows actors to be unmasked for the performances.

Murray High, which also was shut down, allowed its students to rehearse during the two weeks in early October. Murray High students’ show, “Little Women,” was slated for Nov. 12-13 and Nov. 16 as of press deadline. Students voted on the fall musical, citing a smaller cast and simpler set would be more appropriate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Draper’s Corner Canyon High experienced one of the highest COVID-19 outbreaks to date in the state. After weeks of online and hybrid schedules in the midst of their rehearsals, theatre director Phaidra Atkinson and her students are learning adaptability.

“There’s no normal day; we’re changing things every day,” she said in late October.

“With Shakespeare, we had three weeks of rehearsal, then four weeks where we were shut down. Initially, we weren’t allowed rehearsals while the school was closed, but we were able to get in four more rehearsals during that time, since we are sanctioned under the Utah High School Activities Association.”

And with those extra rehearsals, they

were able to pull off first-place results at the 44th annual Shakespeare Festival, which was held virtually.

“We swept everything; it was awesome,” Atkinson said, adding that they had a watch party over Google Meet. “It was the hardest thing we ever have done— to pull it together so fast. We cried a lot when we won.”

In December, the theatre students will take part in three senior one-act student-directed plays as well as “Broadway Backwards” charity fundraiser, both which are restricted to family and friends because of health guidelines.

With the shutdowns, Corner Canyon also moved back their auditions for their February musical, “Matilda.” Currently, they can only allow 300 family or friends in the auditorium per night for the run instead of the typical 1,300 patrons.

“It’s my hope and dream they’ll raise the 25% auditorium capacity to 50% if it’s safe,” she said. “The musical is absolutely worth doing. It’s these students’ joy, their passion and their love. We’ll take a huge hit financially, but students need something to look forward to.”

Atkinson said that she is glad she double-cast the musical as already she had 10 students in quarantine in the first 10 days of rehearsal.

“We’ve filmed some things and put them online so those at home can learn at home,” she said. “It’s so depressing for them to be at home and miss out. It’s a show that we don’t have the rights to film the entire show or to stream it, but it’s a show that’s right for our students.”

Nearby, Bingham High had planned a December screening of their filmed Shakespeare production of “Hamlet,” but in late October, students shifted to online as COVID-19 cases rose at their school and the decision was made to move it to mid-January.

“With the school closure it will be impossible for us to get everything shot and edited before Christmas break,” said show director, Jason Purdie. “We are hoping to get everything at least filmed before we leave for the break, but it all depends on how things go with COVID over the next few weeks. Hopefully, no other cast members will get COVID or quarantined and hopefully there won't be any more school closures. The schedule has become extremely tight at this point.”

Purdie, himself, was quarantined in late September, but was able to virtually meet with his students along with his co-director, Brittany Anderson.

Alta and Brighton high schools reached a peak number of COVID-19 cases in late September and early October, according to Canyons School District’s COVID-19 dashboard, so classes moved online. They returned on a hybrid schedule, but by mid-Oc-

tober, when cases dropped, students returned to full on-campus instruction for those in-person learners.

In mid-October, Alta theatre teacher Linze Struiksma was quarantined, along with six of her students, awaiting COVID-19 test results.

“I’ve had parents there helping as I Zoom in to be there during the three-hour rehearsals,” she said. “We’re adapting the best we can, given what we’ve gone through with being closed down, being on a hybrid schedule, and now quarantining and doing lesson plans and rehearsals virtually. We literally change what we’re doing every week. It’s teaching me and teaching the kids to be adaptable.”

Struiksma, who was able to have her kids compete and take second place in their ensemble performance in the virtual Shakespeare Festival, has been cautious in making theatre plans for the year, trying to adapt to the circumstances.

In mid-September, she talked with her seniors.

“I didn’t feel comfortable with a full show. I was really nervous. COVID cases were on the rise and we didn’t know what it was going to look like,” Struiksma said.

They decided to perform in a showcase featuring groups of up to three students singing or performing a scene together and having two narrators bringing it together in a storyline. A tech student was assigned to each group to help design their set and costumes.

“It works well to be able to rehearse in small groups, so there’s limited interaction and if we have to (because of students being in quarantine), we can remove a scene,” she said. “The kids came up with the theme and created it.”

The show, “Divine Connections,” examines the relationships humans have—from those with siblings and parents to platonic and romantic relationships. The show was scheduled to be held at the school’s new Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m., Nov. 12-13, with only 25% of the auditorium filled with patrons.

“We wear masks at rehearsals, and had planned not to wear them during the second tech week or dress rehearsals when on stage and created a system for them when they

were off, but now, we’ll be rethinking that and talking to parents,” Struiksma said.

She said that she also is rethinking the production of “Little Mermaid” for February, with concerns about producing a full musical during COVID-19 and the costs involved with it, when seating is limited.

Brighton theatre director Tiffany Davis gives credit to her students for adjusting during the challenging time.

“We rehearsed over Google Meet and learned what we could put into the scene, but it’s hard to adjust,” she said. “When we were allowed to continue to rehearse in person, kids came in, we did a symptom and temperature check, we were masked, 6-feet apart and took frequent breaks. When we could do virtual rehearsals on monologues, we did that to eliminate the risk.”

On top of working under COVID restrictions, Davis also had other concerns. As Brighton is under construction, she got news that the new auditorium wasn’t going to be ready in time for the show, so Davis moved the Nov. 19-25 production of “Hamlet” to Butler Middle—an hour before fall break, during which she got married.

“It was a crazy time, but we rallied through,” she said. “The students were so diligent and worked so hard. Nobody in the production tested positive as of now and we put their personal safety first.”

Davis did have one student pull out when rehearsals went virtually, which she respected the immediate decision was shared with her.

She also said that technical aspects were impacted as they could only talk virtually, so some parts were delayed.

“It’s been hard since I love to see actors grow in their acting, and because of the circumstances, I’m not able to coach them as much as I would. It’s been challenging as some activities rely on groups, but when we break it down, it forces me to be creative and find innovative methods,” Davis said. “The show will go on—if we can continue in a safe climate.”

Canyons School District’s peer court provides alternative to suspension, juvenile system

ast May, Brighton sophomore Nora Dominguez received an email from her geography teacher, Shan Apolonio, asking her to consider applying for Canyons School District’s inaugural peer court.

“It really interested me and sounded really cool,” she said. “A week later, I got a letter in the mail and I jumped in excitedness.”

Nora joined 22 other sophomores through seniors in the district’s five comprehensive high schools for trainings and mock trials before the school year began when they would hear their first cases.

The Canyons Peer Court is a model of restorative justice that is being embraced in communities across the country. Peer courts function much like any court of law—except with peer courts, students are trained to hear cases after students admit their guilt to their school administrators, and cases center around violations of school or district policy, such as fighting, bullying, vaping, or misuse of technology. The appearances and outcomes are confidential and focus on helping their peers make better decisions.

“We took an oath of confidentiality and learned what we could and couldn’t ask and how to properly talk to the students and their families. We ask them how they feel about what they did and how it impacted their families and friends and we ask the parents how it affected them and how they’re dealing with it,” Nora said. “I was nervous. I am scared of being in front of crowds and I usually don’t communicate well, but this has given me more confidence. I realized I’m more patient than I thought I was and I’m more understanding. I listen and want to really help them.”

The peer court students rotate in roles of one of three judges, who sit before the families, or they’re one of three bailiffs, who escort the families into the court and read the oath.

Other peer court students sit quietly in the back of the room, learning and observing, and once families leave on a break, take part in the deliberation of the deposition to determine the students’ recourse for the next four weeks. They are guided by Apolonio and the program’s coordinator, Charisse Hilton.

“I really love the concept of restorative justice,” Apolonio said. “I like that students are being held accountable when they make mistakes and they are getting the help to make better decisions. Peer court is about helping the person who made the offense, not a punitive sentence. If they need help or intervention, we can help them get back on track to make more positive decisions and make amends.

As a mom, I know every kid makes mistakes.

And this is like that. We put our arm around them, help them to work it out, to grow up and be successful. Here, they learn someone cares about them after they messed up and they care about their future.”

Apolonio said that by having a peer court, it allows students an alternative to the schoolto-prison pipeline: “When students enter the juvenile court system, the recidivism rates are high. But with peer court, it is much lower. We stop kids from doing dumb things over and over in their lives and help them make better decisions to live their lives.”

Midvale Middle School Assistant Principal ConnieTrue Simons said some students from her school have chosen peer court as their option from possible school suspension or other avenues.

“It’s an alternative to suspension where students are engaged and learning how to change their behavior,” she said. “Suspension doesn’t change their behavior and sometimes, students repeat their behavior. Through peer court, students are learning to make themselves better, their school better and their community better. I like the learning component. It’s absolutely a better approach. Peer court isn’t finding them innocent or guilty, since they already admitted their guilt; it’s a way to move them forward in a positive way.”

That’s because the deposition the students receive usually has a way for students to look into their future at a possible career and discover what is needed and how the behavior may not be helpful. The students also may find ways to repair any damage they made or share ways to follow school rules through posters or a video.

Students also may be asked to apologize to other parties, and to perform community service by finding ways to improve their school community or even leading clean-up efforts on their campus. Another possibility may be that they are to enroll in a class to help correct behavior and find support through one of the district’s Family Learning Centers.

To ensure students are on track, the school administrator checks in with students regularly as well as the peer court-appointed mentor, Suzanne Ren. After the court gives the deposition, Ren immediately meets with each family and outlines the next four weeks for the student to achieve it. Then, she meets with students weekly.

“I ask what they need and how they’re doing,” she said. “I can be that person in the school district that they feel comfortable with and will bend over backward to help them be successful, find out how we can best support them or just be there to listen. Many of these kids realize this diversion is a great opportunity to stay out of the juvenile court system so they’re receptive and respectful.”

By mid-October, the peer court had heard 14 cases of secondary students. The students, who upon successful completion can apply to sit on the peer court the following year, will be tracked throughout their schooling to deter-

mine the success of the program.

“These kids are amazing and to see the growth over the three weeks is amazing,” she said.

That is what Canyons District Director of Responsive Services BJ Weller wants to hear.

“This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” he said about his eight-year goal. “We can use this in lieu of suspension.

Suspension doesn’t really work for the most part. Kids are out of school, unsupervised, getting further behind in their schoolwork, and so, they’re more likely to drop out and not graduate high school. So, when we can keep them in school, that’s better. It’s a community approach, now the family is involved—parents, guardians—teaching them this process, they’re still held accountable, but we feel this is more effective as we’re teaching them the skills, providing the resources to help support them where in the past, we would suspend them for three days and they come back and nothing is changed.”

Weller said that this is another avenue to reach students.

“This is one more tool, one more resource we can provide our students, their families, and our schools, to help support them and to learn pro-social skills to build empathy, compassion and stay out of the criminal justice system if at all possible. When you have caused a harm, by not following the school rules, expectations or broken a law, it doesn’t just impact you, it impacts your family, your classmates, the community,” he said. “Sometimes, you don’t understand that and sometimes going through a process like this helps them build their understanding of the harm they caused and gives them the opportunity to repair the harm they cause, that then gives then to build empathy and it strengthens relationships and prevents you from committing the same infractions and repeating the same harms in the future.”

He also said it provides equity in the district. That’s because students in Sandy and Draper have had the option to enter their cities’ peer courts, but currently Midvale and Cottonwood Heights don’t have peer courts.

Canyons is the second district in Utah to establish a peer court, having sought advice and information from Ogden School District’s peer court. Canyons court was approved this summer by the state youth court association and oversees cases of minor offenses during school hours or on school property, Hilton said.

“Safe school violations like weapons, threats, assaults aren’t seen in peer court; we have collaborative relationships with all the police precincts,” she said, adding that the school resource officers also went through the peer court process in August. “This isn’t about being soft on crime. Peer courts are sentencing courts and the sentences handed down are binding.”

Apolonio said that the peer court members, like Nora, were chosen for their maturity, natural leadership and ability to be compassionate, emphatic and show equity. These students devote at least two Wednesday evenings per month to hear cases and review them four weeks later. In return, they receive 0.25 high school credit for the year.

Hilton, who is in her 28th year in education, said that peer court changes the lives of both the panelists and those who committed the offenses.

“Our goal is to help the kids change their behavior, but our court panelists also are having positive experiences. They’re bright, kind, and have a desire to help. They’re learning about civics, community engagement, exploring career opportunities, engaging with the public, speaking professionally and staying calm under pressure. These kids are responsible and have their hearts in the right spot. They sincerely want to help,” she said. “Youth courts give students a voice, experience with leadership, and a chance to serve their community. I have a passion to help students become leaders and to help make our community better. I think this program will help our community and our families.”

While peer court students applied and were recommended by teachers or counselors, Hilton said that many of them come from different walks of life.

“These kids may be on the mountain bike team, Sterling Scholars for their schools, bilingual, wanting to learn about the legal field, have parents who are immigrants, or having a desire to engage in their community. They really want to get to know the student who comes in so they can learn how they can best help them. I cannot speak highly enough about them,” she said. “I’m a firm believer that kids need a connection to someone, their school, their district, their community.”

For Nora, it is her first time she has been involved in an activity with the school district.

“It’s a way to give back to the community that has given me the opportunity to learn and grow and be supported by kind teachers,” she said. “I’m here to help someone else along.” l

Cottonwood Heights Business Association seeks donations of toys and food gift cards

T

he Cottonwood Heights Business Association has organized its annual food and toy drive in partnership with local schools, and residents have been invited to contribute. Each year, the business association selects two schools in the community to distribute gifts and food to families in need.

“That way we can distribute gifts evenly throughout the community,” said Sherrie Martell, Cottonwood Heights Business Development Specialist. “I get information on the ages of the children we’re trying to help, and people in the community in Cottonwood Heights can sign up to give things to the families within the city.”

The Cottonwood Heights Business Association has helped all of the schools in the city by rotating recipients and helping two each year. The schools identify which families need help and provide the ages and needs to the business association, which then relays that information to community members interested in donating.

“We’re doing one sub-for-Santa and one toy and food gift card drive so we can help as many families as we can,” Martell said.

Donations can include gifts for children of specific ages and gift cards. Families in need of help with groceries can especially use gift cards.

People can deliver items and gift cards to City Hall by Dec. 3. The city asks peo-

ple to note the age of the person intended for the gift. They also ask people to call ahead to make an appointment to deliver their gifts to keep the number of people in the building small during the pandemic.

“We’re planning on helping at least 18 families,” Martell said. “Last year, we did a sub-for-Santa with the middle school in Cottonwood Heights. We helped eight families and 17 kids.”

In November, the business association also organized a donation drive for The Road Home shelter in Midvale. People still wishing to support the shelter can visit The Road Home website for a list of items needed.

The Cottonwood Heights Business Association has tried to organized community events every year, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, they have had to cancel a lot of activities. The toy and food drive provides an opportunity to help the community while trying to foster some of the connection that has been lost during social distancing.

Martell said the business association hopes to reach as many families as possible. “If people want to give more, that’s great.” l

Ridgecrest students help one another with food during the holidays

uring a season filled with giving, Ridgecrest Elementary students are remembering to fill the needs of their peers with food for the holidays.

During early to mid-November, students and their families are contributing to a nonperishable food drive that will benefit other school families.

“We hope to have enough to provide families who need it,” she said, adding that the school maintains a pantry to support families in need. “If we get more food than we need, we’ll share with other nearby schools.”

Nearby, Brighton High, Midvale Middle and East Midvale also have pantries of food, and Midvale Middle and East Midvale has some other supplies as well.

he 60-member Brighton High School Marching Band finished its first competitive season at the state marching band competition in late October. The musicians received their highest score of the season to capture third place in the 5A scholastic division. Their show, “Shere Khan,” which plays off of the tiger from “The Jungle Book” was designed to tie into the school culture as Bengals. “I wanted to connect with our community and

have it be meaningful to Brighton,” band director Mikala Mortensen said. Throughout the season, the marching band members followed health precautions for the COVID-19 pandemic. “They have worked so hard and fought through all of the crazy that comes with being a first-year band and starting a band through a pandemic,” she said. “We could not be more thankful to all who made this incredible season possible.” l

Brighton girls basketball welcomes new era under coach Doug Nielson

he Brighton girls basketball team will enter the 2020 season with a new head coach and only two returning seniors, but they are far from discouraged. Even with the precautions taken due to COVID-19, the Bengals have been able to play together throughout the summer and fall. They have used this time to bond both on and off the court.

Lilly Cheatham, the only returning starter, has already been able to see a shift in this year’s squad.

“This year we have more of a team aspect. Last year we were a group of individuals,” Cheatham said. “This year we are focused on team goals rather than doing well as individuals.”

The team had to put a hold on tryouts because of the statewide two-week pause on extracurricular activities, but are feeling confident in the work they have put in.

“They’ve been going since May, then we went really hard this fall. Now we’re just waiting,” head coach Doug Nielson said.

When Nielson took over the program in May, he relied on Cheatham’s

natural leadership. A senior in her fourth year of the program, she has plenty of experience to lean on. Cheatham helps Nielson lead the team in practice, but she also leads them on the court quite literally. Cheatham led the team in points, rebounds, and assists throughout their successful fall league.

Although they have a young team, it has allowed Nielson and Cheatham to work toward establishing a new dynamic within the program. Cheatham has shared wisdom with the underclassmen on what has and has not worked during her time in Brighton basketball.

“We’re working on starting a new culture here,” Cheatham said. “One built on hard work, dedication and integrity.”

Nielson believes these girls have the potential to win a Region title this year, but the team is currently focusing on some intangible goals.

“Commitment and dedication are the kinds of goals we are working on,” Nielson said. “We are trying to do something as a group that we can’t do as individuals.”

The hope for this young team is to

return Brighton to the basketball powerhouse status that it earned in the early 2000s. In the last 20 years, Brighton has made it to the Final Four six times. In three of those campaigns the Bengals returned home with a state title.

Part of the success of those teams came from community support. Having fans come out to games and rally behind the team has made a big difference. Cheatham hopes that the team’s newfound enthusiasm will be felt all the way in the stands.

“I think that we are building the kind of environment and culture that people will want to see,” Cheatham said.

With the community of Brighton High School and Cottonwood Heights behind them, Nielson and his team hope to achieve big things this year. Brighton High School’s YouTube page will be live streaming every game, so you can still watch while staying safe. The music will go on, thanks to a kidney donor

Kate Peterson can focus more energy on her music now that she got the kidney transplant she waited over 15 years to receive.

K

ate Peterson needed a kidney, and she wanted everyone to know. Peterson, an accomplished Cottonwood Heights musician, found out about her kidney damage back in 2004, and her kidneys gradually declined for the next 16 years. She spent those years

waiting for a transplant, which finally came this November. Once recovered, she plans to advocate for others in need of donors.

“I’ve always been a healthy person, a health nut,” Peterson said. “The thing that damaged my kidneys was prescription drugs.” Peterson was prescribed a medication known to be harmful to kidneys, and despite taking all the measures she could to prevent it, she suffered enough damage that her kidneys started failing.

“It was something I really didn’t have,” Peterson said of her previous condition. “It was a misdiagnosis.”

Peterson was scheduled to start home dialysis in mid-November. Dialysis can extend the lives of people with end-stage renal failure. For Peterson, it was an option to keep her going while she waited for a donor.

It turns out, Peterson didn’t need that option. Two days before she was set to start dialysis, she got a call. A kidney from a deceased donor was a match. Later that day, she was at the University of Utah Hospital getting the transplant she had waited years to receive.

According to the Living Kidney Donors Network, there are currently over 93,000 people on the waiting list for a kidney trans-

plant. It can take between five and 10 years for patients to find a deceased donor. About 80% of people on the waiting list are on dialysis. For people like Peterson, receiving a kidney transplant can double life expectancy.

“Fortunately, I qualified for a transplant,” Peterson said. “I’m lucky in that respect and that I have insurance. I had to think about how fortunate I am until I could get a transplant.”

Peterson had been on the deceased kidney donor list for over 15 years and had been told that she would likely have to wait another two years. When that wait ended, when a match was found, she couldn’t believe the wait was finally over.

A native of Salt Lake City, Peterson has been a musician her entire life. She received the “Utah Musician of Great Promise” award by the Utah Chamber of Commerce and Utah Symphony when she was 14 years old. At East High School, she was named a Sterling Scholar in music. Her talents have enabled her to become an accomplished musician.

She played violin with the Utah Symphony and performed three concerts in Carnegie Hall with the New York String Orchestra.

She often thought, “I could do so much more music when I get a kidney.”

She had her own chamber music performing group in Southern California for 25 years before she returned home to Utah.

She now resides in Cottonwood Heights and teaches private online music lessons. Now that her wait for a transplant is over, she can get back to doing what she loves. “I will be able to teach more private students violin and piano, to compose and record more original music, and enjoy a fuller life,” she said.

Peterson spent years working hard to find a donor. She often wore a T-shirt and posted flyers advertising her need for a transplant. Her blood type is A, but she could have taken advantage of a paired donation program in which donation recipients can trade donors to get the right match.

Peterson got the kidney donation she waited years to receive. In the future, she will focus the energy she spent looking for a donor for herself advocating for others. She wants to let others know how important donating is and how many people are waiting like she did for help.

“After what I went through, once I’ve healed I’ve been inspired to be an advocate for kidney donation.” l

A Dickens of a holiday Like Mariah Carey, Christmas seems to bring out the best and the worst in people. You have some folks gathering presents, food, and cash for those down on their luck, and then you have people on video surveillance stuffing jars of sweet pickles down their pants at the grocery store.

Christmas is descending like a firebomb on families this year who have been sick, laid off or evicted. Rubbing Mediterranean Sea salt flakes into that wound, Hallmark Christmas movies are back.

Hallmark Christmas movies should come with an eye-roll rating. Two eye-rolls means a small-town doctor falls in love with a handsome (yet grumpy) big-city lawyer. Three eyerolls means a sick puppy was healed through a Christmas miracle involving an enchanted snow globe, a Nebraska blizzard and Angela Lansbury.

Not my cup of tea.

Give me “A Christmas Carol” any day.

With his black-and-white characters and punch-you-in-the-face symbolism, fans of Charles Dickens know his stories are never subtle. But you have to love a Christmas story that starts, “Marley was dead, to begin with.”

The story is about Ebenezer Scrooge and the Christmas Eve where he’s visited by spirits all night. (If I’m going to be visited by three Christmas spirits, they’d better be white wine, tequila, and Champagne. Not egg nog.

Scrooge “Bah humbugs” his way through that discussion before he jumps into his distinctly creepy four-poster bed.

Soon, the Ghost of Christmas Past floats into the room, with its face shining like LED headlights. It shows the Christmas memories that shaped Scrooge through joy and heartbreak, until his soul bent like a candy cane, starting his transition to the irritable Scrooge he is now. Ebenezer is all, “Cool, cool. Can I go back to bed now?”

Then the Ghost of Christmas Present shows up (looking a lot like Jeff Bridges in “The Big Lebowski”) and shows Scrooge what his acquaintances think of him. Sort of like a Victorian version of Twitter.

Scrooge sees the people who think he’s a greedy, grumpy old man (everyone) and although Mr. Christmas Present Ghost is a jolly guy, he opens his robe to show Scrooge two emaciated children, representing Ignorance and Want. (Trump tried to deport them last Christmas.)

Scrooge is apprehensive as he waits for the final spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Future. This is my favorite part of the story. The somber, black specter appears to Scrooge and makes the hair on my knuckles stand up. I love how the spirit only communicates through pointing, like a passive-aggressive teenager.

Scrooge sees his dead body, his headstone, and the callous lack of sympathy from those around him. He wakes up a new man,

BENGAL BOULEVARD ROUNDABOUT PLANS MOVE ALONG

he finalized design and anticipated construction deadline for the long-awaited Bengal Boulevard roundabout project has been determined. The roundabout, which will replace two intersections along Bengal Boulevard at 2300 East and 2325 East, will be constructed during summer 2021.

“We have been working on this for about eight years now to get the best possible roundabout for this community,” said Senior Staff Engineer Adam Ginsberg.

Multiple presentations were held detailing this project. On Oct. 3, Public Works Director Matt Shipp presented the roundabout’s design to the Cottonwood Heights City Council. On Nov. 12, the Cottonwood Heights Public Works Department held an open house for the public, presenting the design and receiving additional public comment. Both a virtual and physical open house were held.

“We’ve gone through about four iterations of this roundabout,” Shipp said. “It’s not quite a roundabout—more like an egg-about or circle-about, if you will.”

The finalized roundabout design includes powered lights for each of the 10 crosswalks, arrows for bicyclists, dedicated bike ramps, landscaping and five entrances/exits.

The landscaping concept for the island within the roundabout includes “a foundation of rocks with various trees and shrubs on the interior of the roundabout,” Ginsberg said.

which are to improve pedestrian safety, traffic safety, improve air quality and reduce emissions, and reduce traffic delay.

Over the past few years planning this project, many concerns were voiced by residents.

“The main concerns we heard were about pedestrian safety, traffic and bikes,” Shipp said.

There will be an entrance/exit linked to Brighton High School which will lead directly to the main parking lot for the school. Shipp
