FALLEN HEROES MEMORIAL COMING TO FARMINGTON

hat began as a tribute to her fallen husband has become much more. So much more. In 2016, Antoinette Stapley created “Operation Hero” to help remember 1SG Tracy Stapley who died July 3, 2013, in Qatar. The organization has evolved from a 5K event and fundraisers and includes a traveling memorial that honors more than 300 fallen Utah service members who have passed away in uniform since 9/11 with a decorated boot.

From May 28-31, that memorial will be showcased at Station Park, located at 140 N. Union Ave. in Farmington.

Tracy Stapley, who was described as “very patriotic” by his wife, served for 26 years in the military until he completed his life at the age of 44. “He was known for giving back and helping others,” Antoinette Stapley said.

From the day she answered the door five years ago to two uniformed officers informing her of Tracy’s death, she has navigated a path that was foreign to her. Much of what her organization aims to accomplish is to help other military families understand the resources that are available to them as they also move forward in their own uncharted territory.

“Operation Hero” has a three-fold purpose.

With “Giving Back,” funds are raised through the various events to help families. In the past five years, more than $11,000 has been given to surviving families and other similar organizations.

In “Educating,” Stapley has made efforts to assist 3,000 families with “preparing for the unexpected.” “We want service members and families to know more about what I feel I should have known and what to pay attention to as a spouse,” Stapley said.

CenterPoint Academy is light in the dark through the pandemic and beyond

CENTERVILLE—The theater world lives and dies by the adage “the show must go on” but last year, as the whole planet went into lockdown, even the theater folks had to hit “pause.” Fortunately, in the small city of Centerville that pause was short-lived.

The CenterPoint Academy, loved by young performers and their parents, briefly went to Zoom and other online networking to finish out the spring season.

“We used Zoom and YouTube to at least keep a connection with the kids,” Academy director Wendy Inkley said.

Planned productions were delayed or went by the wayside, but by October 2020 the group was back up and running with a shortened season even while accommodations for the pandemic had to be made.

“Every class had to have a shorter rehearsal time and just jump in with masks; I would say that was our biggest challenge we had,” Inkley said. “We felt so blessed that we were able to wear masks and follow the Davis County School District mask policy.”

The cloud of the pandemic did have a silver lining for the academy. The 100-seat Leashman Hall, where CenterPoint Academy stages its productions, did not have its normal fall use and the group was able to put on two shows, a concert version of “Addams Family” and “Secret Garden” there. While audiences were smaller due to social distancing requirements, the Academy live streamed the productions so friends and family members could view them.

“That was just a huge boost to these kids,” Inkley said.

“It just made the experience of the performance all the sweeter.”

Now, in spring 2021, CenterPoint Academy is going full-bore. They’ve just completed several different performances of Peter Pan. Jr. and the older classes (referred to as the “bigs”) have begun rehearsals schedule for “Freaky Friday” to be performed May 5 – May 22. For the spring productions, performers wore face shields, but they will not have to be masked or shielded for future productions.

CenterPoint Academy was founded by Margot Beecher in 2011 (Pages Lane Theater) at the L Theater offering acting dance and voice for musical theater classes, younger performing arts (one major, one minor). Each year the academy has offered two productions/combined revues a year for students, depending on the class. It grew from strength to

strength until Beecher retired to fill a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But the acting bug had struck her family, and before long Beecher’s son Danny Inkley and daughter-in-law Wendy Inkley were approached to take the academy over.

“We were pretty excited because at the time four of our five kids were involved so it just seemed to really fit that we would jump in and take over,” Wendy Inkley said.

With a staff of 25 teachers, the nonprofit Academy serves about 500 to 600 youth in Centerville and the surrounding area. Having the academy as an outlet during the pandemic has been important to her students, Inkley said.

“In comparison with the complete shutdown, everyone just had a gratitude to be able to perform at all,” she said.

While CenterPoint nurtures talent, it accepts all students who have a desire to learn and perform. It even has a sister program for special needs kids, Friend to Friend.

“Our biggest message to the kids and the families is this is a place where you belong, the academy motto,” Inkley said. “CenterPoint Theater is a place for everyone.”

my, its performances are a great, affordable way to introduce children to theater, Inkley said.

“It’s a great place to have kids come especially; It’s a lower intensity theater opportunity,” she said. “It’s also really good for families to come whose kids can look at and connect with it and say, ‘This is something I want to do, this is something I can do now.’”

This summer CenterPoint Academy will offer several two-week summer camps on June 7, 21, July 5 and July 19 daily from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

And barring any COVD restrictions, Inkley said she is “totally ecstatic” about getting back to “normal” in the fall.

“I think we’ll be better than we were before because we had to be so flexible and do things we’ve never done before. Now we have better offerings for everyone.”

Those offerings include new classes on auditioning, acting and backstage production. Enrollment begins May 10 for the general public.

“I really do think out of the negative more positive will come and stay with us for a long, long time,” Inkley said.

Farmington council and public debate over proposed road in Chestnut Farms subdivision

FARMINGTON—Following a public hearing on April 6 where multiple residents expressed concerns, the Farmington City Council discussed whether a new “stub” road is needed in the Chestnut Farms subdivision.

The Chestnut Farms subdivision sits between 1525 West and 1100 West and borders two properties colloquially called the Young and Bangerter properties.

The proposed road is an unfinished stub on 1365 West that would eventually cut through the Bangerter property and connect to a future 600 South extension. The road’s addition is an amendment to the neighborhood master plan submitted

by Symphony Homes and approved by the Farmington Council in April 2012. The amendment also includes a cul-de-sac.

“To have that as an unfinished road for who knows how long … that is not pretty,” said Mark Tingey, a resident who lives adjacent to the proposed new road during the public hearing. “It is not finished. It is not in any way a nice site to look at. I would far more appreciate it if the city council could address that by either allowing that to be a cul-de-sac instead of a road that goes through there or even instead putting that road as the culde-sac and at the end having that road go stub into Bangerter’s from there.”

Tingey wasn’t the only resident to express concerns over the plan for the stub road and cul-

de-sac.

“Why is the city interested in connectivity?” said council member Scott Isaacson. “For me, some of the very important factors are safety, so that there’s more than one access into an area.”

“There are always sometime in the livelihood of a residential street … a crucial call where a minute or two can make the difference in whether somebody is resuscitated and they’re able to get them to the hospital without loss of life,” City Manager Shane Pace said. “And so it’s always better to have more entryways into a neighborhood than just one or two.”

Ultimately, the motion to move forward with the amendment passed with no opposition.

“If we knew that the Bangerter property would never develop, then we wouldn’t do this,” said Isaacson. “We wouldn’t put a stub road down there. But we don’t know that. As representatives for the city, we have to look to the future … as long as it doesn’t develop, it’s going to be the same effect as a cul-de-sac … but when they do develop the property to the south, I’m persuaded it would be in the best interest of the community to have access there.”l The proposed road is an unfinished stub on 1365 West that would eventually cut through the Bangerter property and connect to a future 600 South extension. Centerville man has devoted life to hunter safety

CENTERVILLE—When it comes to hunter safety, Centerville resident Norman Beers knows a thing or two.

Beers is one of two Utah residents to have served as an instructor for nearly 60 years for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, with Albert Orton of Parowan being the other.

Beers began his duties as an assistant instructor in 1958, and it took off from there. And Beers, 82, has no plans of slowing down any time soon, either.

“I’ll teach as long as I’ve got students that want to learn,” he said. “And want to be engaged in the sport of shooting and hunting.”

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, however, Beers has not been able to work with students for more than a year now. He plans to resume his teaching duties as soon as he is given the green light.

“We had to pull back because of the virus,” he said. “We couldn’t use the classroom and the range. But we’ll be back as soon as we are given the clearance.”

The main point Beers has stressed to his students over the years is just how dangerous a gun can be.

“Every gun is a loaded gun,” he said. “Every gun is a potential weapon. It is our responsibility to enjoy the sport of shooting.”

Utah started its hunter education program in 1957 to help combat one of the highest hunting accident rates in the country. There were 165,081 licensed hunters in the state during that year, and there were 126 reported hunting accidents, of which 22 were fatal.

Soon thereafter, Beers got involved with the program

to help reduce the number of accidents. And working with young people over the years is what has kept the Centerville resident motivated to continue to teach.

“I love working with the youth,” he said. “The younger generation needs to learn the safety aspects. I love working with the youth, but we don’t restrict it to age.”

In more recent years, Beers has had help in the classroom from someone special in his life. His wife, Nina, became a certified instructor a little more than 10 years ago and now they team teach.

“We love it,” he said. “We love being together on the range.”

And while the state has postponed all in-class hunter education classes for the time being, Beers says now is the time to prepare if you want to become an instructor. He offers one bit of advice to those who want to teach.

“Learn to use a firearm safely,” he said, “and display it in a safe fashion.”

The majority of those who teach hunter education in the state are volunteers. Since the program began in 1957, there have been approximately 2,500 volunteer instructors. Currently, there are 342 individuals teaching hunter education throughout the state.

While Beers is still thoroughly active in the classroom as an instructor, he does not actively hunt any longer.

“I have given up hunting two or three years ago,” he said. “I haven’t sought a permit, but I still have family that goes. And when they go, (I’m right there with them).” l

Davis People: Marchelle Lee of Good Things Utah

f things had turned out a bit differently, Marchelle Lee might have been a dancer on Broadway, or an astronaut, or a special needs teacher. All those passions, and her inward drive to always learn and do more, led her to a much different career path as a journalist.

Today, the Woods Cross High graduate (class of 2000) helps bring both entertainment and enlightenment to viewers each weekday as executive producer of “Good Things Utah” on ABC4 Utah. Working with a team of talented hosts and a dedicated staff, GTU has become the most-viewed and most award-winning program of its type in the market.

Marchelle grew up just below Bountiful Blvd. in a family of six children. She worked at her father Ken’s CPA firm, Bement and Company, while attending the University of Utah and being part of the university’s Crimson Line dance ensemble.

In high school, and later at the U., her professional plans began to change.

“I was part of a program called Best Buddies, where you worked with disabled students, took them to lunch and to dances, and during my senior year at Woods Cross I thought that was the direction I’d go,” she recalled. “When I got to college, I realized I also wanted to be a newspaper journalist, inspired by the old movies of the 50s.

I wanted to be a hard-hitting investigative reporter.”

She was discouraged by her professors, who told her that “TV would be hard, but print journalism will be impossible to get into.” Still, her first job in “the business” was as a writer and producer at KUTV-Channel 2. Her friend Todd Reid gave her a shot working for the 10 p.m. news. But Marchelle’s husband was moving to Phoenix to earn his master’s degree at Arizona State, so the family headed south and she got a job at ABC15 in Phoenix, working in breaking news and then becoming a producer for five years. Their first two sons were born in Arizona, and after 10 years in the Valley of the Sun, they moved back to Utah. By then, ironically, Todd Reid had been named news director at ABC4 Utah.

Marchelle joined the station team again and created a program called “The Daily Dish” which aired at 4 p.m. She then took a five year break to work for the family firm after the passing of her father, but said “I wasn’t sure where I really fit in. So I got a call one day from a friend who heard there was an opening at Good Things Utah, and said, ‘I don’t know why, but your name keeps popping into my head, and I feel you should call on this job.’” She did, and was hired

looking at emails about 5 a.m., arrives at the station by 6 a.m. and starts scripting out, literally and figuratively, how the daily 9-11 a.m. broadcast will go.

“From booking segments to getting information to write on them, we create the entire show from start to finish every day,” she said. “I write the show rundown, make sure our hosts know where they’re going to stand, and time out how long they are going to talk. During the show, I greet the guests, bring them back into the studio and make sure everything is set up. Sometimes I’m in the studio behind the cameras, sometimes I’m in the control booth with McCall (Gray, the producer). And we all write our website articles. So it’s a very full day both before and after we’re on the air.”

Marchelle’s day doesn’t end when she finally leaves the station. Along with Gray and the hosts themselves, there’s reviewing of emails, discussing new segments and guests, and often working both evenings and weekends at home.

“We do two hours live five days a week,” she said. “Even when there’s holidays, we either still do pre-recorded shows or have to find repeated shows that will work. It’s kind of an endless loop at times!”

But she loves it – loves doing programs that make a difference. As an example, the day of this interview at the station, hostess Nicea DeGering was doing a segment on AED machines that almost all businesses have. She didn’t know how they worked, and none of the rest of us knew either except a guest from Unified Fire Authority who walked Nicea and viewers through it.

“My greatest satisfaction is just work-

ing with our cast and crew,” she said. “You see them on the air and they are the same off the air. The GTU family really is a family.

We’re here for each other, which is important because this can be a high stress job.”

Marchelle and her family are moving back to Davis County from Holladay, and

she’s anxious to “return to my old stomping grounds. My kids have not been around those places, so it will be fun to show them where I used to rollerblade, for example.

Plus my sister is my best friend and we’ll only be about a minute from each other.” l

Book Nook – Tsalix Silverthorn continues his adventure Tsalix Silverthorn and the Desert of Desolation, Richard Siddoway, Cayelle Publishing

hen last we left Bountiful author Richard Siddoway’s newest character, Tsalix Silverthorn, he and his fellow villagers Asur and Kwercus had completed the first part of their quest – to retrieve a prophesied talisman for their king. That journey kicked off the Tsalix Silverthorn series, the first fantasy books authored by the long-time Bountiful resident and New York Times bestselling author.

Tsalix Silverthorn and the Desert of Desolation, which was released in March, is the second in the four-book series. It’s the continuing story of a courageous young man (Tsalix) leading a dangerous quest to restore peace and order in the tiny village of Aravah in the Kingdom of Sodizen. King Elosha is close to death, and his twin sons, Princes Abadon and Johona, are engaged in a battle to take over the throne. As you might guess, one of the sons (Abadon) has evil intentions of becoming dictatorial, while Johona is much more loving and peaceful. King Elosha summons Tsalix and his friends to retrieve these talismans from their hidden places, and thus prevent Abadon from taking power.

In a previous interview, Siddoway said that “Every book I have written has the underlying theme of good over evil.

We don’t spotlight just my husband; his boot is not front and center,” she said. “We want people to know and remember the amazing stories and take time to remember them.”

As the organization is completely volunteer-based, help is needed in various ways for the upcoming boot memorial. Stapley said they are always looking for combat boot donations, uniforms to display, sponsors and any donations for online and in-person silent auctions and opportunity drawings. Volunteers are also being sought for set up and take down as well as while the display is up for the viewing public.

But as Tsalix and his brothers exercise extreme faith, and overcome a number of obstacles, they summon within themselves the strength necessary to fight against opposition.

Proposed open space at Mountain View Phase 2 subdivision moved to trailhead

FARMINGTON—The Farmington City Council voted to approve amended schematics for the second phase of the Mountain View subdivision near Legacy Parkway at their April 6 meeting. The Farmington City planning commission approved the original Phase 2 schematic plan on April 4, 2020. The new plan incorporates several changes, including the conversion of an original open space parcel to a lot and the addition of .411 acres of open space by the Legacy trailhead on 250 South. “(The builders) have agreed to create a turnaround to city standards, replace the amount of parking that was there for the trailhead with the same amount, and then landscape the rest, and then convey it to the city,” said David Petersen, City Development Director.

During a public hearing, members of the community expressed dismay at converting the open space to a lot.

“Previously, there was a Parcel A in phase two that was supposed to be open space. And I was told it was going to be a park, taken care of by the HOA that I pay,” Brian Hendricks said.

“But since they’re changing things, it shows Parcel A turning into lots for houses …they’re making up for it by putting the open space on 250 South, but I don’t really see how that makes sense, because that’s outside the subdivision. That’s open space on someone else’s

street, not open space in my subdivision.”

Shane Smoot, who represents the subdivision builders, Forza Terra LLC, said that the green space in the amended plan is actually greater than in the original version.

“We don’t know how people hear things or who tells people what,” Petersen said. “But what we do know is a neighborhood park wasn’t part of the approved phase one or phase two as far as the city’s concerned through our approval process.”

But, said Petersen, since the 250 South space will not be in the subdivision, it will be taken care of by the city, not taken out of subdivision residents’ HOA fees.

Additionally, Smoot said the 250 South space will be just as accessible to subdivision residents as the previously proposed open space would be. “We really feel like we’ve provided better quality space, more quality space … So we really do feel like we are doing more than what was originally proposed.”

The motion to move forward with the revised schematic plan was approved with no opposition. l

Farmington bus driver still going strong at 80

FARMINGTON—Don Sims, an 80-year-old Farmington resident, is still going strong and driving a school bus for Davis School District. “I wake up in the morning, get out of bed, shower, dress, shave, eat breakfast – and then what? I go have some fun,” he said.

People might call him old, but he is well-qualified, having passed the DOT physical exam. Sims was also able to get his CDL and pass the physical assessment and training, as well as the use of Special Education equipment and on-the-road driving.

He was just a youngster, only 73, when he started driving on Aug. 5, 2013. “I decided to look into it because they were looking for drivers, and both my brothers have been driving for many years,” Sims said. “Now I drive because I love it. I love driving the bus. I love the kids.”

Field trips are great for him too because he gets to go to many places where he has never been, gets in free, and gets paid for it.

Sims has a great sense of humor and loves to joke with the kids. Just before a five-day weekend, he told the kids he was sad for them because they wouldn't see him for five whole days. He hoped they wouldn't cry themselves to sleep and suggested they be brave and courageous. “When one little boy was getting off, he leaned over and very confidentially whispered, ‘One of those boys said that you are stupid.’” said Sims. “That must have meant that I couldn’t talk him out of crying himself to sleep.”

Friday, March 13, 2020 was a sad day for many. It was announced that schools would be closed through spring break, then was extended through the end of the school year. “It was sad to be cut off so abruptly from the students on our routes without being able to bid them adieu for the year,” Sims said. In August, students began going to school on a limited basis, and new proce-

dures were introduced, such as spraying hands with hand sanitizer while kids board the bus. The bus is disinfected after every run and students are required to wear face masks to cover their mouth and nose. He and the other drivers know these precautions are important and follow them carefully.

Sims gives these reminders for school bus safety: • Everyone on the bus must be seated while the bus is in motion.

• Everyone must stay seated until the bus door is open.

• No one is allowed to eat or drink on the bus.

• Riders must use their inside voices.

• They must follow the driver’s instructions.

• Bullying is not tolerated.

• Skateboards, scooters, or roller skates are not allowed on.

Large items, including large instruments and athletic equipment are also not allowed.

“Riding the bus is a privilege and not a right,” he said. “This privilege can be withdrawn if rules are not obeyed.”

Exiting the bus is a dangerous time for students, so they are instructed to cross the street in front of the bus while the red lights are flashing, said Sims. The red lights tell drivers they must stop and not proceed until the lights are off.

The lights on the school bus are for the purpose of protecting children, he said. When drivers see the emergency flashers, they must be cautious. When they see the yellow flashing lights higher up on the bus, they need to slow down to 20 mph because they are now in a school zone. The bus is going to stop and pick up, or drop off students. This does not mean drivers should speed up to avoid the red flashing lights. These lights mean drivers must come to a dead stop – not creep slowly by. l

Yoga anyone? It’s not just an exercise – it’s a way of life

ince 2006, Farmington resident, Rebecca Fronberg, has offered a free yoga class on Friday mornings. She started it in Farmington with a small group of ladies in the Farmington Rock chapel. The class grew from about 10 to a group as large as 50 to 60 men and women.

Fronberg said doing the free class is important to her. “I feel like sometimes I’m most creative then.” Unfortunately, COVID-19 has affected this class. She has had to change her venue a few times because The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints closed their buildings to extra-curricular activities.

During the summer, the group practiced yoga on a grassy area by Farmington Pond. It has now ended up in Bountiful at The Canterbury Place, where she charges $5 each week to cover her costs of using the building. This has brought the number of attendees down to 10 to 15. Some of her stalwarts haven’t been back at all since the pandemic started. They just haven’t felt comfortable with getting out among people.

Once things in the community open up more, Fronberg hopes to get back to practicing in Farmington without a fee.

She does record her classes on Facebook. “I call it my karma class,” Fronberg said. “At least people can participate for free.” It is open to the general public, which has broadened her exposure.

“Oh, I love her classes,” said Pam Barton, Fronberg’s longest-running yoga student. Barton, who stopped coming out to yoga practice because of the safety concerns of COVID-19, watches the Facebook video every week. She likes it because she doesn’t have to drive anywhere and

doesn’t need to worry about what others may be thinking about her yoga postures. She puts her yoga mat down in her office in front of her computer and does what she can.

“She’s a great lady,” said Barton. “She’s great to fulfill everybody’s needs.”

“It works for everyone, the way she teaches,” said Christine, another student. She has been doing the yoga class for about five years. She stopped for a while to serve an LDS mission and then came back.

This often happens where people will be gone for a year or two and then come back, Fronberg said.

During yoga practices, students will often hear Fronberg remind them to listen to their bodies and honor the one that brought them to yoga that day. “Yoga is not just an exercise,” said Fronberg. “It is a way of life. It is not a religion, but it will help you be better with whatever religion you practice.”

Fronberg wants her students to understand this, so she sends out weekly emails explaining the purpose of the practice each week. Being on the mat is only 1/8 of the practice, she said. It is part of the eight-limb path, or ashtanga. The eight limbs are guidelines for obtaining meaning and purpose in life. They focus on health and spirituality.

“Enjoy the push and pull of the creative process by remembering that there are no mistakes,” said Fronberg. “Only insights.” l

he Farmington City Council has agreed to participate in a countywide transfer of paramedic services from Davis County to individual cities.

“This proposal will require a property tax increase on the City’s part and a property tax decrease on the County’s part,” said Farmington City Manager Shane Pace in the written agenda for the March 16 council meeting. “… Our property tax increase to fund the new team will be 23%.

That will be lowered by the County’s [sic] elimination of the paramedic tax to an increase of 13%. If we choose to subsidize the unit with general funds, we can lower that property tax increase lower.

This will require a truth in-taxation hearing in August.”

According to Pace, the cities of Layton, Centerville, Bountiful, West Bountiful, Woods Cross, and North Salt Lake have already started funding paramedics in their own cities or fire districts instead of using the services provided by the Davis County Sheriff’s Office.

“This issue has been discussed many times through the years,” Pace said in the agenda. “I am the one who brought it up again and started the process again.”

Pace also said in the agenda the current model has worked well for the county for many years. “However, the County [sic] now has a population of over 360,000 and [is] very urban. Davis County and only one more rural county in Florida are the only entities who still run combined deputy/paramedics.”

An unnamed member of the meeting said that the reason for separating the paramedics from the sheriff’s office is not just to enhance the medical service. “There may be cases where [the sheriff’s office] may need to take police action, or are they supposed to act as paramedics? That seems like it’s not a good idea.”

“This is the right time for this to happen,” Farmington Mayor, Jim Talbot, said of the separation. “Shane has really taken this and has run with it. He has put in countless hours having meetings with the fire chiefs and the city managers to get this agreement to where everybody can really agree on it.”

The written interlocal agreement, which is directed toward Farmington, Fruit Heights, Kaysville, Clinton, and Syracuse Cities, says that county services will cease “not later than Dec. 31, 2022.”

The council passed a motion in favor of the agreement with no opposition. l

Centerville gets $1.7 million road grant

CENTERVILLE—Centerville City has been approved for an almost $1.7 million federal Surface Transportation Funds grant to improve a .45-mile stretch of 400 East from Pages Lane to Porter Lane, City Manager Brant Hanson told the city council at its April 6 meeting. The exact amount approved was $1,696,786 ; the city’s anticipated price tag for the project will be $123,214.

Surface Transportation Funds which can be used to improve federal roadways are administered and recommendations are made for their disbursement in the region by the Wasatch Front Regional Council.

“It’s pretty rare to actually have something awarded from that [STP funds],” Administrative Services Director Jacob Smith told the city council. “It’s a one in 100 chance; there wasn’t a whole lot of funds available.”

“It may have been a one in 100 chance, but it was our time,” Mayor Clark Wilkinson responded and praised Smith and City Engineer Kevin Campbell for pursuing the grant. Campbell told the council he thought WFRC liked the bicycle lanes and center median that are a part of the design of the project.

Construction is expected to begin in five years, “although I have seen items moved up on the list,” Hanson said.

At the same meeting, the city council awarded the bid for its culinary waterline replacement and storm drain improvement project along 400 East from Chase Lane to Parrish Lane. The city received three bids for the project: Great Basin Development and Construction: $ 435,259.00; Ormond Construction: $651,715.01 and SCI: $765,110.

The city engineer had estimated the project would cost $431,650. The city council voted to award the bid to Great Basin Development and Construction.

The waterline along the 1-mile stretch currently serves four homes in a cul-de-sac and is mostly for future development, Interim Public Works Director Mike Carlson said. Those four homes should see in-

creased water pressure, he added.

“We’re trying to get it done before we overlay the road,” he told the The City Journals. “We want to have all the utilities done underneath it.

We’re trying to get with the gas, power, phone, anybody that wants to upgrade their stuff in that section of road before we do the reconstruct.”

The Deuel Creek Irrigation Company was expected to complete replacement of irrigation main lines and service laterals in the area by April 24. Its contractor for its project was Great Basin Development and Construction. They will be able to stay on site and use the same traffic control, City Engineer Kevin Campbell said.

“They won’t skip a beat in moving on to our project once the irrigation project is completed,” he said.

Carlson said the project should be completed by late-summer.l

Ride a bike to enjoy more health, sunshine, and joy

ith so many businesses struggling through 2020, one industry that actually boomed is bicycling. With lockdowns in place, people of all ages embraced every opportunity to go outside and bicycling’s popularity increased dramatically.

The NPD Group’s Retail Sales Tracking report shows that from April 2019 to April 2020, sales of kids’ bikes increased 100%, fitness bikes went up 125%, and lifestyle bikes shot up a whopping 200%. Numbers from the past 12 months have yet to be released, but industry indicators show the surge has continued.

Davis County cyclists are preparing for this month’s Frontrunner Metric Century on May 8, with details below. It’s the first organized ride since before the pandemic.

“We have loved seeing the growth in our sport over the last year,” said Zach Chatelain, owner of Biker’s Edge in Kaysville.

“It’s amazing to see so many happy new faces on bikes.”

Even indoor cycle/stationary bike sales have surpassed expectations. “North American sales were 116% of plan due to the huge increase in consumer sales during lockdowns,” said Les Wiehe of Park City and Director of North American Sales of Stages Indoor Cycling.

Bicycling enjoys mass appeal due to the incredible benefits it offers. It is really good for your heart by providing low-impact cardio exercise. Riding your bike as a primary means of transportation saves you money, wear-and-tear on your car, and is good for the environment. Riding outside increases mood-elevating vitamin D, which is derived from sunlight (be sure to wear your sunblock!).

Riding can be both a solo and social activity. While riding alone can be a great way to get your workout in or clear your head with much needed “alone time” while still enjoying invigorating endorphins, group rides can be a way to spend time with family and friends while also improving your riding skills. Cycling clubs such as the Bonneville Cycling Club or Wildflower Cycling Club organize group rides that are open to riders of all skill levels and even offer beginner to expert clinics.

Here in Davis County, cyclists can enjoy a ride while avoiding the dangers of vehicular traffic by riding on Legacy Trail on the west side of the county. With very little elevation change, the paved trail rewards you with views of the mountains, pastures, native foliage, and perhaps even a horse or two.

“I love that Luke and I can enjoy bicycling together,” Weeks said. “ It gives us quality time while enjoying the outdoors and our beautiful state.”

If you would like to participate in cycling events and raise money for charity, consider joining a local organized ride like the upcoming 10th annual Frontrunner Century Ride which will take place on May 8, 2021. This event, along with all other major athletic events, was canceled in 2020, so organizers and riders of the Frontrunner Metric Century 2021 Ride are excited to participate in this 100-kilometer (62 miles) ride with 1,300+ of their closest friends.

The Frontrunner Metric Century raises money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and U.S. Navy and Air Force volunteer groups, who help out at the various aid stations placed every 16 miles of this fully supported ride. While 100 kilometers may be daunting for the beginning cyclist, the route is primarily flat and includes less than 700 feet elevation gain over 62 miles.

Matt and Robyn Storms, the creators and organizers of the event which started in 2011 with only 220 riders, emphasize that this event is not a race. It is a ride. As it has grown to over 1,300 riders in 10 years, participants range in age, fitness level, and bike style. There are riders with $10,000+ full carbon Italian

road bikes as well as riders with second-hand Huffy bikes but the energy and excitement of completing 100 kilometers and receiving a bicycle-chain adorned medal is the same.

“We just want to have a fun Spring event where all types of riders can participate, enjoy themselves, and feel successful,” Matt Storms said. The route starts at downtown Salt Lake City and ends in Ogden’s historic train depot where riders can board the FrontRunner train and relax as they are transported back to their vehicles while Pride trucking transports their bikes back to downtown SLC. A portion of the route is in Kaysville on Smith Lane by Centennial Jr. High and Snow Horse Elementary. So if you’re in the area on Saturday, May 8, be sure to cheer on the hundreds of riders as they roll on by. l

Farmington changes zoning to make way for Fiore Townhomes planned unit development

FARMINGTON—On March 16, after a public hearing, the Farmington City Council moved to enable an ordinance that would change the zoning for a parcel of land at 1525 West and Clark Lane from Agricultural Estates to R-8. This ordinance follows city planning commission approval of the developer’s final master plan on March 4, 2021.

The land is intended to be the site of a multifamily residential project called Fiore Townhomes. Minutes from the March 4 Farmington City planning commission state that in 2000, “The parcel in question today was considered to be a location for commercial support and services. Twenty years after that development agreement, with consideration of Farmington’s changed economic and community needs, the applicant has proposed placing 30 townhomes on this corner.”

Under Farmington City law, the townhome project would not be able to move forward without the rezoning ordinance.

According to an addendum to the council meeting agenda, written by city planner Shannon Haskell, the city council approved the zone change on Oct. 27, 2020 “with the condition that the zone change enabling ordinance would not be approved prior to approval” of the project’s final plans.

Haskell walked the city council through the

detailed plans during the March 16 meeting to show the proposed development features, such as water and gas lines. According to the plans, “all common areas and drainage facilities/infrastructures are to be maintained by the homeowners association” rather than the city.

Planning commission meeting records state that there’s a water easement on the north part of the proposed development. To minimize the water usage, developer Jacob Ballstaedt said he plans to use “‘local-scape,’ or planting drought-resistant plants native to the area.”

“There’s actually a really well-done landscape plan,” said Haskell, pointing out a page in the plans where proposed trees, shrubs, grasses, perennials, and turf sod are listed by name. The page also includes brief instructions for planting or staking the trees, shrubs, and perennials.

The ordinance took effect immediately upon the city council’s approval.

Ballstaedt said at the planning commission meeting that he would like to break ground on the new townhomes in April. l

Girls wrestling continues to rise in popularity FARMINGTON—Wrestling has always been a popular sport in Utah. And not just with boys, girls wrestling is rapidly picking up steam among high school athletes.

Girls wrestling just completed its first sanctioned season under the Utah High School Activities Association in February. And with 600 athletes competing around the state in the inaugural season, it would be safe to say the sport is on the rise.

Locally, the Farmington Phoenix fielded a team with seven athletes.

“It was a season of tournaments,” Farmington coach Melvin Robinson said. “We would try to set up a meet with another school, and they would have seven girls in different weights.”

The Phoenix had wrestlers compete at the 108, 132, 136, 140, 145, 150 and 190 pound weight classes. All of the Farmington wrestlers are sophomores and juniors, so the 2020-21 season was about laying the foundation for the future.

Despite being short on numbers, Farmington had a successful season, winning the Region 5 title over Bonneville. The Phoenix also had four individuals place at the state meet in February.

Amanda Neff was fourth at 132, while Rachel Hacking was also fourth at 145. Jessica Hacking came in second at 150, and Nieve Parry was fourth at 190. And despite the success, Robinson would have liked to have had a few more girls participate.

“There was a lot of hesitation,” he said. “I was

And with one season in the books, Robinson is expecting an even better turnout next season.

“The idea will spread,” he said. “They (the athletes) will talk to their friends. I’m hoping to have 15 girls, I’d love to see that.”

Wrestling is the 18th sanctioned girls sport in UHSAA history. Girls have wrestled for much of the sports history in Utah, which goes all the way back to 1938. Uintah’s Candace Workman is thought to be the first female state placer in Utah history, finishing second in 2008. And Robinson acknowledges the sport is only going to continue to grow from here.

“I think it’s ready to go,” he said. “I was surprised by the attitude of the parents. The concept of their daughter handling a situation on the mat is something they like.”

Robinson, who has served as an assistant coach previously, was overwhelmed by the responsibilities of a head coach.

“I’ve never done the paperwork or any of the behind-the-scenes stuff,” he said. “I’ve got a really busy schedule, so I wasn’t prepared for it.”

As the sport continues to rise in popularity, Robinson makes one prediction.

History comes to life in Farmington

FARMINGTON—Step back in time to pioneer days at the Farmington Historical Museum, located on the corner of 100 North and Main Street. During the late 1800s, the lot it sits on was used by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for tithing. Hay, grain and other produce brought by church members was stored in a building there that served all of Davis County, which encompassed one stake. The building was constructed there because the stake president, Joseph Hyrum Grant, who lived in Woods Cross, was inaccessible to the majority of the stake. Farmington was the central location. The office was built on the southwest corner of the old tithing lot and became the stake president’s office in 1907.

In 1915, the church put the property up for sale. Farmington City bought it, put their city offices there and the building became the new Farmington City Hall in 1917. A library was put in part of the building, and the volunteer fire department stored firefighting equipment in the east bay.

The Lions Club leased the building in 1970 when Farmington moved its city offices to a new building. “The city reclaimed the building in 2001, did some remodeling and completed the Farmington Historical Museum, which opened July 9, 2004,” Executive Director Annette Tidwell said. “Visitors have been welcomed ever since.”

Tidwell became involved with the museum when Farmington City announced the need for volunteers for a new Historic Preservation Commission. She expressed her interest in a letter to the mayor. He accepted her request and welcomed her to the commission. The first project for her was to establish a city museum. “I had never imagined such a project and had no experience in doing so,” said Tidwell. “However,

some great people were also on the commission and worked well together in accomplishing the task.”

They spent about three and a half years visiting museums in Davis County. They asked a lot of questions, spread the word about the new museum and collected donations.

The Farmington Historical Museum opened in July 2004 and Tidwell was appointed to be its executive director.

“We held workshops for owners of historic homes who were interested in preserving their homes,” she said. The commission taught people about their pioneer heritage and elementary school children participated in contests, drawing historic homes or landmarks.

A big part of the museum’s success, according to Tidwell is “the many people who have made donations to the museum in money, artifacts, books, and histories.”

Visitors from all around the country have visited the museum while visiting local residents, she said. “They have been very kind and appreciative of what we have on display.”

Farmington has also benefited by having a museum in the community that has such a rich collection of pioneer history.

Tidwell has enjoyed her 21 years of service to the community on the Historic Preservation Commission. “I have been greatly blessed by the examples of many other Farmington residents I have served with on the Museum Board or the Preservation Commission.”

Don’t expect immediate government help in a community emergency

CENTERVILLE—Windstorms, an earthquake, civil unrest, the pandemic. The events of the past year have left many people, including Centerville residents, wondering just how prepared they and their community are for the emergencies that could possibly impact them.

Many people assume that emergency services will be available to them in a crisis, and, while that may have been true in the situations faced in Centerville this past year, that is unlikely, at least initially in a more extensive or prolonged emergency.

In most communities, including Centerville, emergency operations plans have been developed for most situations. Centerville City’s Basic Emergency Operations Plan may be found at https://www.centervilleutah.gov/159/Emergency-Management.

However, those plans are designed to ensure that physical infrastructure, such as water and power, and the chain of command are maintained. Residents should be aware that in a major incident, city and emergency services could be overwhelmed and they may need to rely on their own preparation or volunteer resources until the crisis passes.

Hazards specific to the Centerville community are identified in the plan. They include natural hazards, technological hazards

and domestic security threats. Natural hazards include climate hazards, high winds, debris flows/mudslides, earthquakes, liquefaction/slope failure, rockfalls, fires, flooding and pandemic. Technological hazards listed are dam failure, fallen aircraft, hazardous material spills and transportation accidents, power outages and cyber-attacks. Domestic security threats include nuclear and terrorism/weapons of mass destruction. While it may have seemed inconceivable prior to 2020, Centerville has experienced several of these hazards or their possibility in the past year, although none have overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure.

Under Centerville’s Emergency Operations Plan, the city is divided into five Emergency Response Neighborhood Networks.

ERNNs are organized to meet the needs of residents and businesses during disasters and emergencies until city services are restored.

In such emergencies, led by district leaders and under the direction of the emergency manager they are organized to provide leadership and coordination of volunteer efforts, such as medical triage or evacuation, within their boundaries.

City Council member Bill Ince is chairman of the Centerville Citizen Corps which coordinates and provides training for local

residents. (Ince is also the Canyon View ERNN district leader).

The CCC’s mission is “to engage the citizens of Centerville in collaboration with communities within the region, in activities to be safer, stronger, and better prepared in preventing, preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters of all types, including natural and technological disasters and acts of terrorism,” according to the city website. Its purpose is “to strengthen Centerville’s emergency management abilities by giving residents living within their networks opportunities to engage in emergency preparedness activities.”

Under the CCC, there are four functional committees: Community Emergency Response Teams, Medical Reserve Corp, Be Ready Utah Committee and the Communications Committee (volunteer) which tests and practices Centerville’s Emergency Communications Network including amateur radio network.

Police Chief Paul Child is the city emergency manager. Under Child’s direction, the city plans annual tabletop and field exercises to test the Emergency Operations Plan. Centerville City has plans to replace old Green Steel Tank built in 1971

CENTERVILLE—The city is applying for a federal grant to help replace the Green Steel Tank. The 500,000-gallon water tank located near Parrish Lane and 700 East was constructed in 1971. It was refurbished/recoated in the late 1990s. It has met its expected life expectancy and the city has been dealing with significant rust and deterioration including pinhole leaks, City Engineer Kevin Campbell said. The tank currently serves about 204 homes, interim Public Works Director Mike Carlson told the City Council at their April 6 meeting. Future development is expected in the area, he said.

City officials hope to replace the Green Steel Tank with a reinforced concrete million-gallon tank. Campbell said his department had projected the city’s population out to 2050 in determining future use of the new tank.

“We’ve doubled the size because this million-gallon tank will get us well past the year 2050,” he said. “We think there could be some use on the west side for irrigation. We’re being very conservative.”

City Manager Brant Hanson told the council that the tank replacement was one of four projects city representatives brought to the attention of the state’s Con-

gressional representatives that they met with in December. Congress recently introduced a reformed earmarking process for local government projects, known as Community Project Funding after a 10year ban. Representatives may again request funding to support specific community projects.

Senators Mike Lee and Mitt Romney and Rep. Chris Stewart expressed their support and optimism that the project would receive federal funding, Hanson said.

“We are actually ahead of the game at this point,” he said. “There’s not many communities ready like we are with shovel-ready projects. We have high hopes that we’ll be front of the line for some of these funds that will be made available to local governments.”

Current cost estimates suggest that the replacement tank could cost $1,942,097.50; property acquisition would be $500,000 of that cost. City officials are looking at acquiring property around a half mile north of the current tank to build the new tank.

reservoir, Campbell said. The City Council unanimously approved a resolution of support for the project, the first step in the grant process, at that meeting.

City officials will now work with the city’s federal lobbyist to apply for a grant or other financial assistance to fund or partially fund the tank replacement project. l

VHS in-house program gives teachers development options

E

ducators in the Davis School District are required to do professional development hours, but as the 2020-21 school year started most teachers were doing all they could to just make it through the day.

COVID-19 was raging and teachers were feeling overwhelmed and frustrated.

Viewmont High School English teacher Kristin van Brunt had an idea to make these required hours easier. By bringing professional development in-house and creating a customized solution that would allow teachers to complete it at their own pace, she hoped more teachers would participate. She started tinkering with ideas and at the beginning of the school year van Brunt introduced a program where teachers would be issued one challenge in five categories, every two weeks.

“This was more bite-sized,” van Brunt said. “It gave teachers choices in what they learn and how they learn it. Teachers can choose what they want to do. The social and emotional mission is the most popular.

It gives the teacher permission to do something for themselves like read a book or go for a walk.”

Along with social and emotional learning, the missions include challenges in general/professional learning, digital

tools and engagement, standards-based learning, and using the learning management system Canvas.

VHS Principal Jason Smith said the

program has worked well, with teachers catering the challenges to fit their needs.

“It’s been well-received by the faculty. This year, we issued the challenge

without any expectation but next year we’ll have a mandatory component where they’ll have to accomplish so many per year,” he said. “We’ll poll the faculty to see what was helpful and get suggestions and feedback moving forward.”

As a teacher for 27 years, van Brunt knows the challenges faced by teachers when it comes to professional development. It’s hard leaving the classroom for the day, finding a sub, and playing catchup once they’re back in the classroom.

While not all teachers participated in the program, some teachers completed all the missions and others did the best they could.

“I love professional learning. I love to learn new things and try new things in the classroom,” van Brunt said. “We get stagnant if we don’t continue learning. This is a great way to continue to learn.”

Smith is disappointed he won’t be able to see the fruition of the project as he’s leaving VHS at the end of the school year to be the principal at Northridge High School in Layton. “I just love [the program]. I’m so excited about it and I’m bummed that I’m leaving. I’d love to be here next year for the next step.” l

Annual service awards honor the best in the Viking community

I

n a year of ups and downs, the annual Viking Service Awards held at the end of April was definitely an up. Started more than 20 years ago by the Viewmont High School PTA, the event honors people in the Viking community who made a difference in people’s lives during the school year. “[The Viking Service Awards] is honestly one of my favorite events,” said VHS Principal Jason Smith. “We take a moment to recognize any member of Viking Nation and how they have served others and made our school and community a better place.”

Members of the VHS circle of students, parents, faculty, staff and community leaders are asked to nominate an influential individual who is recognized for their efforts to create programs, connections or improvements.

“People don’t know who nominated them until the night of the awards,” said Maria Hodgson, PTA board member and Viking Service Awards coordinator. “Then the nominator reads why they nominated their person. It’s a fun community event.”

Melanie Walker was the recipient of the Community/Parent Awards. Walker

owns a dance studio in the community and coaches the VHS Vykelles drill team.

“She’s a really positive influence. The [Vykelles] program was in rough shape when she came into it and she turned it around,” said Hodgson. “She’s such a great mentor for the young women.”

Five people were honored for Faculty/ Staff awards. Kay Merrell, a VHS English teacher who creates a fun learning environment; Kristin van Brunt, a VHS English teacher, nominated by a fellow teacher for creating a professional development program; Erin Williams, a CTE counselor and faculty liaison to the PTA; counseling secretary Diane Bailey, nominated by Smith; and Alex Jeppson, a VHS History teacher nominated by Hodgson’s son, Lucas.

“Mr. Jeppson is just so kind and teaches kids in their own language,” Hodgson said. “He knows how to teach teenagers and make learning fun.”

When Jeppson learned Lucas was sick with COVID, he made a special trip to the Hodgson’s home to deliver a bag of Kettle Brand Potato Chips to their doorstep. “He delivered Kettle chips to every student in his class who got COVID,” said Hodgson.

The Viking Service Awards have become a tradition and a way to honor good works done by good people.

“I believe it was started for just that reason,” Smith said. “An opportunity to recognize those in our community that serve others.” l

Phoenix improve record with shutout over Box Elder

I

t has been an inconsistent season for the Farmington boys soccer team.

That may be the norm during these coronavirus times, but the pandemic actually hasn’t been much of a factor for the Phoenix during the 2021 season.

“It has certainly been a rollercoaster,” said assistant coach Clay Holbrook. “We started out with a ‘bang,’ then we hit a low spot and now we’re turning it around.”

On April 23, Farmington improved its record to 7-4 with a 3-0 win over Box Elder. The victory was highlighted by several inspirational stops by sophomore goalkeeper Adam Esobosa, two goals by Cam Bingham and one from Austin Argyle. The victory also helped erase memories of a 3-2 loss at Box Elder a month earlier.

“That game was played in a blizzard,” coach Aaron Soelberg recalled. “We never should have lost. We were down 2-0, came back to tie and then they got a score (by Reggie Grear) in the final minute.”

Grear actually had all three of the Bees’ scores in that match. With Farmington ahead 2-0 early in the second half of the second match, he had another chance to do as much damage to Farmington as the recent windstorm that pushed through the campus and sent two of the program’s six soccer goals toppling sideways.

Grear, sporting a mustache and full beard that made him look more like a 35-year-old than a high schooler, lined up to face Esobosa on a penalty kick. The shot, however, caromed off Esobosa’s leg and went in the opposite direction.

While Farmington fans cheered, and Esobosa tried to quickly recover from the deflection, the Phoenix charged downfield on the school’s artificial-turf field and Bingham sent a shot into the net that decided the outcome.

“We wanted to score first, and we wanted to keep the momentum,” Esobosa said. “After the shot, I was still in a daze and wasn’t watching what happened. I was happy how we reacted.”

After Bingham’s goal, the Farmington bench erupted, and then several of the players signaled to their goalkeeper to thank him for the assist.

“He stopped quite a few (shots) for us today, didn’t he?” said Holbrook, smiling.

The shutout was Farmington’s fourth this season, and most have been attributed to Esobosa, a sophomore who is following in his grandfather’s footsteps.

Esobosa said he used to play forward until four years ago, but moved to keeper after hearing his grandfather’s goalkeeper success stories while playing soccer in Mexico. Esobosa said

his grandfather almost made a professional team there and gave him a few pointers.

“I like penalty kicks,” he said. “I’m confident that I can stop them by ‘reading’ the shooter and figuring out what he’s going to do. The Box Elder kid was scary. He’s a big guy.”

Esobosa, however, has also become scary for opponents.

He was in goal when the Phoenix started the season with four straight wins, but hurt his arm in mid March and missed two games. He returned to post a 3-1 win over Woods Cross, and his latest shutout moved Farmington into second place in the Region 5 standings with four regular-season games remaining.

The Phoenix, who are scheduled to move up and face tougher competition as a 6A (larger) school next fall, were just one game behind first-place Viewmont and Holbrook and Esobosa agreed that Farmington is the best team in the region and may eventually finish on top.

“I coach a lot of club ball and know a lot of the players on all the local teams,” Holbrook said. “We may not have won all of our games, but this team has the most talent and we’re starting to build the chemistry we need to win consistently.”

Esobosa is one of three sophomore goalkeepers. In fact, Farmington started just two seniors in its lineup. Bingham is one of them and has provided much of the offense. His two scores against Box Elder made him the team’s leading goal-scorer (7) and, if Esobosa can continue to work his magic at the net, he won’t need many more to push the Phoenix toward a good seed at the state tournament, which is scheduled to begin May 14.

Semifinal games will be held May 25 at Herriman High School and the title game is May 28 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy.

“Other teams still look at us as the new kid (school) on the block, but we’re not going anywhere,” said Soelberg. l

Batter up! Farmington opens new sports fields

F

ARMINGTON—Station Park Fields is a 4-plex baseball and softball field that is owned by Farmington City and located at 294 S. 650 W., just south of the Station Park mall. “We started it four years ago and just had a grand opening,” said Neil Miller, Farmington Parks and Recreation Director. The grand opening was on April 9.

Development ran smoothly except that, “In the last year the ground was kind of soft. We had to bring in added top soil to the ground and level the ball field,” said Miller.

The whole park includes 26 acres used for soccer and other grass sports. Picnic pavilions and pickle ball courts are also available for public use.

“We rent it out,” he said. “We’ve got folks from all around the area who are renting the facilities. Anyone can rent it and the pavilions and the pickle ball courts.”

This includes family groups. “The price varies according to the amount of work that needs to be done on the ball field,” said Miller.

The pickle ball courts can be rented for $10/hour.

The pavilions rent for $25.

“Thanks goes to Coby Factory and of course the mayor and city council,” he said. “The city staff helped while it was under construction. We had multiple contractors.”

Hospice brings comfort and dignity to near-end-of-life patients

H

ospice is a program in which patients are given comfort care rather than not curative care as they approach end of life. Death is not hastened in the process as some people may think. The focus of hospice is to improve the quality of a patient’s remaining days versus the quantity of those days.

Tracy Ruiz, director of volunteers for Community Services (CNS) explained that patients qualify for hospice when they receive a terminal diagnosis from a doctor and are expected to live six months or less from time of diagnosis. They can also choose this route if they decide to not fight an illness, such as cancer. Two doctors need to sign a form to bring them on, their primary care physician and the hospice medical director. Both care for the patient, unless the primary care doctor decides to just release care to the medical director. In this case, the director takes on both roles.

Hospice involves a variety of medical personnel who are each dedicated to ensuring that the patient receives the most appropriate care for their situation. Professionals who might be on the hospice team include one or both doctors, a social worker, a chaplain, nurses, and certified nursing assistants (CNA). Trained hospice volunteers are often involved in providing respite care and company to the ailing patient. Ruiz said that there is also, “what we call fluff care.” This is care and comfort provided by other experts in fields such as aromatherapy, massage therapy, music therapy, and Reiki. Control is given to the patients on who they want to have come into their home, but they must agree to allow a nurse in at least every two weeks.

Though the focus of hospice care is escorting a patient toward the end of life, Ruiz said that the patient’s condition can improve. They are evaluated periodically for certification to see if hospice remains appropriate for them.

“Some people as we say, ‘graduate’ from hospice,” she said.

The concept of hospice has been around forever, but it came to the United States in the 1970s by way of Dr. Cicely Saunders, with the help of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.

Interest in this country grew when Saunders gave a talk at Yale University in the 1950s. Then in 1986, Medicare decided to pay for hospice care as a way of cutting back on the expense of extensive hospitalizations for patients.

“This is when it was born,” said Ruiz.

Some patients have lived for a couple of years on the program.

One long-term hospice patient is Orval Hayes, who lives in Centerville. He came on after falling and breaking his foot. It never healed, so he could no longer walk. He now has colon cancer and has been confined to bed for a year and a half. However, it has been 22 years since the first of many hospitalizations for various conditions.

Hayes was born in Salt Lake City in 1944 and has spent much of his adult years doing cement and brick work. He was able to build his own home with his skills.

He worked for Bountiful City for 10 years and then for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 30 years as a Facilities Manager.

Hayes said he is grateful for the CNA team. “I don’t know what I would do without them. I love my nurses.

They are the heartbeat of the world.” Whenever he needs them, they come right away.

Hayes said hospice helps take the stress off of his wife too. “The stress has been harder and a bigger stress on her than on me.”

He loves his wife, and affirms that often. He even has a sign above his garage that says, “I Love My Wife.”

They met when she was taking her child to his sister’s house for childcare. He helped her carry in a crib. She was impressed by his love for her child. Now, they are parents to four children and grandparents to 11.

Veterans Park prepares for third stage of development

T

he Bountiful Veterans Park has completed its first two phases of development, and the results have been amazing. What was once simply a lawn area north of the city hall has been transformed into what its creators call “The Dream,” a fitting and emotional tribute to all those from south Davis County communities who’ve served in the U.S. military.

Now, the third and final phase of development is set to begin. That was outlined by city councilman Chris Simonsen, the inspiration for the park’s creation and Chairman of the Board of Directors, in a presentation to city council in April.

“We’re preparing to begin the Statue phase while we continue to raise funds,” he said. “After raising more than $1 million, all in private donations, our third phase will be to install at least three of seven planned statues by Memorial Day this year.”

That day, May 31, will also be when a special program is planned. Details on that are still being finalized, but the public can learn more through our Davis Journal weekly publication or on the Veterans Park website (https:// bountifulveteranspark.org).

hours that have helped install walls, place dedicated pavers and even lay sod. Thousands of visitors have toured the park since its dedication on Veterans Day 2020, and Simonsen said many have left pins, flags or other mementos by the pavers, walls or monuments.

“Everything has been placed where it is for a reason,” he said. “Each word is placed with its specific meaning and purpose in mind.

The size, the messages, they are all special and one of a kind. Our decisions have never been quick decisions. And we’re very excited for what will happen next.”

The first three new monuments will be The Military Family, the POW/MIA monument, and the Wounded Warrior monument.

Each will be 3 feet high by 5 feet in length, and each will depict a fitting tribute to those respective subjects. And in 2022, a fourth monument will be installed, the Dedicatory Prayer monument at the entrance to the park.

“Our Veterans, families and their unparalleled sacrifices continue to be a guiding force in every decision we make in this Park,” Simonsen wrote in a report to the council. “What would those who have sacrificed the most and even the ‘ultimate’ for our freedoms be honored to see in the park? With those thoughts in mind, we strongly feel that the Dedicatory Prayer Monument needs to be part of the park.”

Hopebox theatre shines brightly with kindness and love for those battling cancer

ounded in the Fall of 2014 by fourtime cancer survivor Jan Williams, the Hopebox Theatre’s mission is “to bring hope to families battling cancer through the performing arts.”

The vision for Hopebox Theatre came to Williams during her third bout with cancer in early 2014 when a group of her theatre students from her performing arts academy, Showstopper Productions, surprised her at her home and serenaded her with Broadway show tunes. The immediate joy and hope she felt in that moment inspired her to create the Hopebox Theatre.

“It’s a foundation that gives back to those who are struggling, dealing with, or are a survivor of cancer or other life-threatening ailments,” Williams said. “This is a place where creativity, vision, and talents combined with love and support can give back to all those who need some new ‘Hope’ in their lives. I want to be able to help those like myself find joy and hope through the performing arts as I have.”

While the foundation would love to help every family in the community struggling with cancer, rather than donating their proceeds to other organizations that assist families on a wider scale, Hopebox partners with individual people and families in the local community who are selected by an extensive community nomination process and ultimately chosen by the organization’s board of directors. Each production at Hopebox is dedicated to a single recipient thus giving a much larger, yet personal purpose for the cast and crew working countless volunteer hours towards their show’s performances. Often, this individual, or Wall of Hope recipient, is a person that the organization, cast, and crew do not know at all other than their story and fight for survival. But because there is an actual name, identity, and real person and family who is benefitting from the production, this bolsters each person’s passion and heartfelt desire to give their time and talents generously.

“I love the Hopebox because they give back in a way that no other community theatre does,” Wursten said. “Their mission really is the priority and they help people get through the hard stuff.”

Unlike typical advertisements for local theatre performances, the marketing of each Hopebox show highlights the Wall of Hope recipient, thereby further connecting the community to the mission. The recipient’s name is even woven into elements of

the show whether it is displayed on a prop or mentioned in a line of script.

Darlene Sweeten of Pleasant Grove, who is battling stage 4 invasive carcinoma breast cancer, was the Wall of Hope recipient in February 2021 for Hopebox’s production of “She Loves Me.” Sweeten, blindsided by her nomination and selection, was completely overcome with how much the organization, its cast and crew, embraced her, a total stranger. They already knew her the first time she met them at a rehearsal. Through “D-A-RL-E-N-E” cheers at every rehearsal and performance, every hug, every call and text to check in on her, Sweeten said, “The biggest and best thing was their friendship and the time they took to get to know me and make me feel special. These new friends truly loved me.”

Last month, Hopebox performed “Forever Plaid,” which benefitted Joshua French, who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia just before Christmas 2020. This show is particularly special for French as it was discovered after he was chosen that he actually performed in “Forever Plaid” as a cast member himself years ago.

In addition to proceeds from ticket sales, like past Wall of Hope recipients, French’s fund received additional donations generously given each performance. Each show and fundraising effort culminates on closing night, a memorable and moving evening that honors the recipient after the final curtain by playing a video clip of their story and presenting them with gifts including the check for funds raised during the show. “Forever Plaid”

closed on April 10, and while some recipients can enjoy closing night in person, due to his illness, French joined via Facebook live. The moving ceremony can be viewed on Hopebox Theatre’s Facebook page.

After gifts, tributes, the check, and the silver plaque with French’s name on it which inducts him into the Hopebox Theatre Wall of Hope family, a statement from French and his wife, Careshmeh, was read. The couple said, “We are so grateful for the generosity that we have experienced from people we had no idea were aware of us or our trial. This has felt like a very lonely journey for us that we’re making and the burden has been made lighter because of this amazing kindness. It has renewed our hope in humanity at a very dark time. Thank you.”

While the main foundation is Hopebox Theatre, Williams’ performing arts academy for children and teenagers, Showstoppers Productions, also chooses Wall of Hope recipients for their shows. As the cast and crew

for these shows are kids, children battling cancer are the selected Wall of Hope recipients.

Once a Wall of Hope recipient is inducted into the Hopebox family, they are forever connected to the theatre. Some recipients beat their illness and survive. Others do not, sometimes even passing away before the closing night ceremony of the show dedicated to them.

While the money raised for each Wall of Hope recipient is a tremendous help, Chad Knavel, Hopebox’s Director of Marketing and Development, said, “The money is not the biggest deal. To me, it seems insignificant in regards to how much we really do for the cancer patient. The hope we give them, the love they feel from people who are basically strangers, is just powerful and wonderful.”

Indeed, the priceless diamond that is the Hopebox Theatre shines brightly with many facets of generosity, kindness, love, and of course, hope.

Better than perfect

Life

Moms are good for all kinds of things; homemade cookies, clean underwear, and guilt, just to name a few. Although each mom is different, we often feel we’re doing everything wrong when it comes to raising children. Do we back off, step in, offer advice, stay silent, help them succeed, let them fail?

We’re never sure and we’re usually winging it, just doing the best we can.

It reminds me of when my brother knocked the wind out of himself by being stupid. Mom thought he was choking and performed the Heimlich. He couldn’t breathe for two hours. She did the best she could with the information she had.

I love mom but she wasn’t perfect.

Thank heavens.

She cheated at Skip-Bo, had no patience with stupidity, and hated animals with a passion. When she got remarried and moved to a ranch in North Carolina, we found it a unique and hilarious karma. Her emails to me often started with, “Well, I kicked the rooster again today.”

Mom might have loathed poultry, but when the wind snapped her beautiful globe willow tree in half, she mourned it like a family member. Every spring, mom’s garden would bloom with color. She loved ladybugs and butterflies. She’d also hand my daughters a saltshaker and tell them to feed the snails.

doubted she loved us. She wasn’t just a mama bear; she was a mama velociraptor when it came to defending her kids.

Mom once told me her children were her inspiration. An inspiration to move across the country.

As a final joke, mom requested each of her children to speak at her funeral. I considered digging up the Beowulf puppets and delivering her eulogy via Grendel, the monstrous creature doomed to wander the earth.

She would have loved it.

Mom worked as a teacher’s aide at an elementary school before she died. (I don’t think the two are connected, but it was an elementary school.) At the funeral, her coworkers told me what a great woman she was. I already knew that.

We often put the dead on a pedestal (which is dangerous because they can roll off and fall on people). But mom wouldn’t want to be remembered as being a perfect person who never messed up, got angry, felt alone, burned dinner, swore, failed, tried again, and again, and again.

If you’re a mom on Mother’s Day this year, that’s the message for you. You were never meant to get everything right. You don’t need to achieve perfection. It isn’t even possible. Just embrace your wonderful messiness.

FALLEN HEROES MEMORIAL COMING TO FARMINGTON

hat began as a tribute to her fallen husband has become much more. So much more. In 2016, Antoinette Stapley created “Operation Hero” to help remember 1SG Tracy Stapley who died July 3, 2013, in Qatar. The organization has evolved from a 5K event and fundraisers and includes a traveling memorial that honors more than 300 fallen Utah service members who have passed away in uniform since 9/11 with a decorated boot.

From May 28-31, that memorial will be showcased at Station Park, located at 140 N. Union Ave. in Farmington.

Tracy Stapley, who was described as “very patriotic” by his wife, served for 26 years in the military until he completed his life at the age of 44. “He was known for giving back and helping others,” Antoinette Stapley said.

From the day she answered the door five years ago to two uniformed officers informing her of Tracy’s death, she has navigated a path that was foreign to her. Much of what her organization aims to accomplish is to help other military families understand the resources that are available to them as they also move forward in their own uncharted territory.

“Operation Hero” has a three-fold purpose.

With “Giving Back,” funds are raised through the various events to help families. In the past five years, more than $11,000 has been given to surviving families and other similar organizations.

In “Educating,” Stapley has made efforts to assist 3,000 families with “preparing for the unexpected.” “We want service members and families to know more about what I feel I should have known and what to pay attention to as a spouse,” Stapley said.
