ed Barn Academy in Farmington is a non-traditional addiction-recovery program. “We are a life skills academy,” said Alan Fahringer, program director of Red Barn Academy. They don’t just try to get them clean and sober. “We don’t talk about drugs, although everybody here was a former drug addict. We don’t talk about their pasts. We take them from the day they get here and provide them an opportunity to completely reinvent their life, going forward.” The men that come to them come from jail, because it is an alternative to a prison sentence. “Or they come in off the street, just broken, lost, usually homeless, but we have them sit on a bench out front for a while, and we tell them that this is their portal between life outside that door and the new life in here you say you want,” Fahringer said. “And everything we do here is based on character development and behavior modification. So, it is very different,” he said. “We pride ourselves on self-sufficiency. We don’t have people who do our landscaping. We do it. We don’t have people to cook our meals. We do it. We don’t have people to clean up our bunkhouse. We do it. The students run Continued page 4
