BOUNTIFUL’S FAIRY CITY CELEBRATES ITS 6TH YEAR Byline

BOUNTIFUL--You might not realize that Davis County is being visited again this year by another special community. It’s right where it’s been for six years, tucked along the path behind the Bountiful Branch library, delighting children and adults alike with its annual emergence. And it’s a labor of love for resident Kerry Goodrich, creator of Fairy City. sad. I asked her why and she said that Trump had announced his candidacy for president and she thought the world was going to end.”

Kerry was shocked to hear her talk that way, and decided she needed to create some magic for fourth graders. “And this idea really came to me out of nowhere.”

That first year, 2016, Kerry planned to make just six fairy doors “as a random act of kindness. I ran to the craft shop, got some things and just started painting. They were meant to be a message of hope and magic.

That’s how it got started.”

There’s quite a backstory to Fairy City, and its founder who is affection-

ately known as the Crazy Fairy Lady.

Kerry says she was a troubled youth who spent a lot of time out of classrooms. One of the places she hung was along the path behind the library.

Her initial six doors soon morphed to 40 that first year, including some mushrooms and ladybugs, and placed in several locations. Cnce she saw the reactions of children who spotted her creations, and got her first thank you notes, she was hooked.

“I was concerned at first that the city would be upset about me putting these up, but the landscapers have been very careful with them,” she said. “I’ve heard they even pick them up while weeding and then put them right back in place. And what I found is that many people love them and leave behind all kinds of crystals, necklaces and even letters and notes for the fairies. All I wanted to do was help cheer someone up, and I think Fairy City has done that.”

Ken Romney: Reflections of a three-term mayor

W

est Bountiful Mayor Ken Romney took a few moments to reflect on the previous 12 years he has served in office. Mayor Romney, who grew up in Bountiful, was attracted to West Bountiful due to the rural feel and the open space. The Romneys have been residents of the city since 2001.

When the developer in the PUD where he and his wife Jacqueline were building a home failed to meet the expectations of the people who bought building lots, rather than sit back and complain, he decided to run for office for the first time in his life. He was first elected to the city council, and then two years later he ran for mayor.

“I have tried to run the city like a business,” stated the mayor as the conversation turned to financial solvency. When he was first elected in 2009, the country was in the midst of a severe economic recession. The city was not spared the consequences of the situation. Sales tax revenues fell short of projections and the city came close to not being able to make payroll. Like many Americans, the city was heavily in debt. The city administration and officials set a goal to pay off bonds as quickly as possible as well as work to avoid incurring debt to pay for roads and water lines that were in need of repair/replacement.

After pondering for a moment when asked what he is most proud of, he explained that the decision was made recently to pay off the remaining bond on the city building.

If paid as scheduled, the bond would have been paid off in 2026.To pay it off five years early is quite an accomplishment. The goal of the early payoff was to allow for a sales tax bond for the new public works facility. He was also happy to report that the goal of not going into debt for road and water projects has been met, with all projects being paid for in cash.

“As a civil engineer it is personally satisfying to look at a completed project with brand new asphalt,” said Romney.

Serving people, working with a wide variety of people, knocking on doors and meeting new people while campaigning are all highlights described by the mayor. When asked what he would like the public to know that they might not be aware of when it comes to running a city, he reported the following: • The city does not have as much flexibility or power

• Administrative work has quadrupled in recent years, particularly when it comes to public safety. For example, when there is an incident within the city which requires public safety officers from West Bountiful or any other agency, the body cam and dash cam footage must be reviewed. Every minute, even from outside agencies must be carefully studied. An incident that lasts for an hour, and multiple vehicles respond, with each vehicle carrying at least one officer could take upwards of, well, you do the math.

“Don’t make changes just to make changes. Take the necessary time to make good decisions. It’s OK to move slowly. And DON’T MESS THINGS UP!” stated the mayor about the principles that guide him.

Romney reported that the residents of West Bountiful have done a great job looking out for one another during the pandemic and following the health guidelines set forth by local and national agencies. While our overall infection rates are lower than the county average, there was a brief time when our per capita infections were the highest in the county. He was not aware of any deaths in the city that were due to an individual who was infected by the virus. His observations were that adolescents and the elderly seemed to struggle the most, with the isolation and loss of activities and issues related to mental health that definitely increased during 2020. On the small business end of the pandemic, he said that a few small businesses closed permanently in 2020. He then presented Santorini’s Greek Grill and Wingers as examples of businesses who took a significant risk and opened during the pandemic.

Discussing the decision-making process concerning the run for a third term, Romney said the number one factor was the support of his wife, Jacqueline. Second was the flexibility and support of his employer. He also simply stated that he loves the people he works with. He explained that the staff and elected officials don’t agree on everything and that is a good thing. The diversity of opinions, paired with the integrity and reasonability of his associates in the city creates a functional government without unnecessary contention.

His final comment concerning the city of West Bountiful was this: “The people are just SO good here.” l

Showcased at Bountiful children’s business fair

n May 8, Choice Schools and Acton Academy hosted their second annual kids business fair. It is always held the Saturday before Mother’s Day rain or shine. The sunshine and 58-degree weather provided comfortable conditions for the fair, which was open to any entrepreneurial minded kid ages 5-16.

There were 46 booths and 84 children that participated in the fair. For a $15 fee, each child could have a space to sell their product or service. Each fair participant had to come up with their own business name and concept. They also were responsible for setting up their own booths and merchandising their items.

There were a surprisingly large variety of products and services available for purchase. Food such as homemade tamales, baked goods, a drink bar with kid-friendly custom concoctions with names like “the Unicorn” complete with whipped cream and sprinkles on top. Other students offered jewelry. Hand woven friendship bracelets, beaded jewelry, clay jewelry

and necklaces custom imprinted with names during the fair. Live plants were also in the offering.

Some students chose to sell their own artwork including face painting. Cash was the preferred method of payment, but some students had a QRcode for their Venmo account.

Each student had to come up with their own idea without any help from their parents or teachers.

If parents provide any financial backing it is considered a loan and expected to be paid back from their fair earnings. Any money left over after that is their profit. Students had come from all over the valley, from a variety of schools and several students reported that they were home schooled.

Although there were a few categories the students were judged on, Choice School co-founder Jevonne Tanner does not want to make that the focus. “What is important is that these kids are here and doing this! Many of them were nervous,” said Tanner.

Not only had the fair participants come up with their own brand, product or service and mer-

chandising, they were also using various tactics of marketing and salesmanship. A student from Choice school, Lillie Seeley, was out from behind her booth actively selling her product. “Do you want to buy my story? It’s about a wolf!” she said.

Another student was walking around handing out small flyers advertising her business “Little Penguin,” promising free stuff, inexpensive Mother’s Day gifts and a drawing.

Services were also offered.

Finley Magelby, a home-schooled student from Herriman, offered fair goers a magic show. She goes by the stage name “Trixie” and offered a few tricks for $1.

“She became interested in magic a couple of years ago and we have just pursued it from there,” said Trixie’s mom Amanda Magelby. After watching Trixie perform for a few minutes it was hard to believe that this was her first official show outside of what she does for her family.

Continued from front page Fairy City came a sad reality—Kerry began feeling ill.

“We didn’t know what was wrong, but I knew something wasn’t right,” she recalled.

“I often painted and did my hot glue work in bed, and made my first flowers in 2017. I wanted to branch out and gave the Thought Bubble project a trial run, along with 80 fairy doors here in town. I also shipped another 20 all over the country, and even some internationally.”

By year 3, in 2018, the Thought Bubbles gave way to decorative rocks, and she continued to work on pieces that were biodegradable. She also got a diagnosis—Lymphoma and Lupus, with a tumor in one leg that crushed her hamstring. But that didn’t stop her, and she was blessed that a daughter of a late friend of hers in San Diego, Danielle, was willing to come to Utah twice a year to help drive her and set up Fairy City.

“I can walk, occasionally use a cane and sometimes a wheelchair, but I only have so many steps in me a day,” Kerry said. Each year the decorations have gotten better,

thanks to both Kerry’s work and the donations from family and friends. Her goal for this year’s Fairy City is that everything can be upcycled—with biodegradable components and non-toxic paints. “I’m not leaving a mess and everything is safe,” she said.

Kerry photographs every decoration, and posts photos online at www.fairy-city. com. She has received a number of suggestions and recommendations. Her creations often use quotes from esteemed writers and poets. She’s traded personal messages with celebrities such as Neil Diamond who have learned about Fairy City.

She admits to having strong opinions on politics herself, “and my fairies do as well.

I’ve learned that in this very Republican state, when done in fairy form, people can have conversations with the fairies.”

As each new year unfolds, Kerry admits she gets both nervous and excited.

“I just hope the fairies find those who need them the most,” she said. “I hope however they are received, they bring joy. They have brought so much of it to me.” l

New Allied Health Building offers programs to meet demands of healthcare industry

KAYSVILLE—Students who want to enter the healthcare field can now receive training in the new state-of-the-art Michael J. Bouwhuis Allied Health Building on the Davis Technical College (DTC) campus. A formal ribbon cutting to launch the facility was held last week.

The 85,000 square foot building is named for retired Davis Tech President Michael J. Bouwhuis who served for 24 years.

“There are 11 programs,” said Melanie Hall, Director of Marketing and Community Relations for DTC. “The second floor is for practical nursing. Students can move directly to Weber State University. It’s taught by WSU instructors so it’s a seamless pathway to continue on to WSU.” As part of the dental assistance program, every Friday DTC offers dental care in partnership with the Bountiful Community Pantry, said Hall. “We call it Pantry Smiles. They provide critical services to patients.”

There is such a demand for healthcare workers now, she said. “We’ve seen a spike during the pandemic. There’s been a huge uptick in the CNA program of people who wanted to get involved. CNAs often go on for their LPN, RN or as surgical techs.”

“It’s a great stepping stone,” said Heidi Anderton, Instructional Management Assis-

tant. “Students can complete it in about five weeks. It gives direct patient care in assisted living, to doctors and nurses in a hospital setting and providers in the home as well to the aging population or those who need support.”

They are ready to give care in fundamental ways, said Hall, whose mother needed additional help before her passing. “A family like ours couldn’t have done it without them. They are the unsung heroes of the healthcare world.

It’s the most foundational direct training someone is going to get.”

The facility has practice labs that look like recovery rooms or surgical suites. “There are manikins that look like human bodies designed to have ailments that humans have,” said Hall.

“It’s a form of AI meets medicine. The nurses can practice on them and get the experience in a simulation environment. The manikins can sit up and make groaning noises. It’s fascinating but a little bit horrifying too.”

There is also an advanced EMT and firefighting program, Hall said. “They learn in a fabulous ambulance simulator. We’ve partnered with Layton City to use their burn tower for training too. You could be a firefighter who is first on the scene and need to give medical attention until EMS arrives. They wear a lot of hats. We don’t always appreciate the role a firefighter has in lifesaving procedures on scene.”

The new facility will allow DTC to serve 3,300 students. “The programs offer great accessibility,” said Hall. “There are not long waiting periods so you can get started pretty quickly. We see students coming straight out of high school and others who are looking to retool their career.”

“We have 61 to 68-year-olds starting over

because they didn’t want to retire,” Anderton said. “It’s fun to see a class with a senior in high school and a 63-year-old grandmother.

We have a grandpa and his grandson taking welding together.”

Local businesses struggle to find employees

B

usinesses that were fortunate enough to survive the pandemic shutdown and restrictions are now faced with an issue that has the same potential to close them down, either partially or completely. The “signs” are everywhere: Now Hiring! Join our Crew! Signing Bonus!

The labor shortage is most obvious in the category of retail and food service, yet the crisis extends far beyond the floor to ceiling windows. Their recruitment efforts are just more visible in the storefronts than those businesses who recruit predominantly online where a company does not have a physical/visual presence in a particular community.

A quick visit to the website of online recruiter Indeed.com reveals job openings in virtually every imaginable field of work, with many requiring minimal education or experience. Anyone looking for a career change has ample opportunity to explore new fields of employment.

A sampling of available jobs within Davis County include: registered nurse, delivery driver, FBI special agent, retail sales clerk, behavioral care technician, personal trainer, licensed clinical social worker and package sorter, with salary ranges as varied as the job descriptions. Where job seekers once had to compete for available jobs, the tables have turned and employers have to compete for available employees. Many companies are offering signing bonuses.

Comments and posts on social media provide a wide range of explanations for the shortage of employees. The blame tends to be pointed in every direction, often influenced by the political affiliation of the person making the comments. Some claim employers are not paying enough, while many blame the current administration for doling out stimulus checks and increased unemployment benefits, thus removing the need or desire for those without jobs to go out and find one. Employers who use online recruiting find that it is fairly easy to find applicants for open positions, but next to impossible to get those applicants to respond to requests for interviews or to show up for

their first day of work. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has announced that in June, Utah will opt out of the extra $300/week unemployment benefit provided by the federal government.

The adolescent workforce has been diminished in recent years as the available time in a student’s schedule is often limited due to extracurricular activities. Sports that were once seasonal are often year-round, with the opportunity for out-of-town tournaments nearly every weekend instead of that once a year out of state trip. School curriculum can be demanding as students work toward earning college credits and scholarships. Many students just do not have time for an after-school job.

According to an Associated Press story, there are multiple reasons for the disparity between job openings and candidates to fill the positions. There are still previously employed workers who are fearful of contracting COVID while working with the public. Women represent a majority of those who have not returned to the workforce, partly due to the fact that many school districts across the nation have not returned to in-person schooling, creating a need for child care which is often not affordable or available.

The economics of supply and demand is also at play. A robust economy drives retail purchases creating the need for more workers.

There are plenty of customers but not enough employees to serve the customers. The labor crisis is also affecting the supply chain to retailers as companies are competing for drivers to deliver their goods. Beyond that, there is a shortage of labor within the companies who produce the goods.

The supply chain interruptions reached the panic level when Chick-fil-A announced they would only give out one sauce per item.

Famous for delivering handfuls of sauce, fans will now receive a maximum of three sauces per order. What is the world coming to?

Recently, local Dairy Queen owner Scott Thompson (husband of the author of this story), who represents the franchisees in five northwestern states on the company’s Supply Chain Advisory Council, attended a meeting

where the CEO of the company that produces chicken for the fast-food chain explained their situation. Demand for chicken has skyrocketed across the nation, creating shortages for many concepts and retailers. In response, their processing plant has been running seven days a week with extended hours. They have offered their employees double-time to fill these shifts.

The employees came in and worked the weekend shifts, collected their double pay and then called in sick on the following Monday and Tuesday.

“What do we do when they miss two days of work and finally return to work on Wednesday? We thank them for showing up to work.

That’s all we can do,” said the CEO as he explained that behavior that previously resulted in disciplinary action is now acceptable.

Thompson also describes a situation where he was receiving a dairy delivery in one of his stores at the same time that he was

receiving a warehouse order. The warehouse driver was trying to convince the other driver to leave his employment at the dairy and go to work for the warehouse. A discussion of hours and salary ensued.

Economic forecasts predict that the labor shortage may ease up as the pandemic winds down, children return to in-person learning, stimulus checks have long been spent and unemployment benefits dry up. In the meantime, consumers are learning to be patient as they wait in drive-thru lines that seem to move at snail’s pace, or shop in stores that have enough checkout lanes to accommodate Black Friday crowds yet only have one open lane. That one open lane is typically staffed by a cashier that is doing their level best to keep the line moving and is not the reason for the labor shortage. In fact, they ARE the reason a business can keep its doors open and offer you the products you are looking for. Be kind.l

Utah Employment Exceeds Pre-Pandemic Levels

ne year after the economic recession caused by the coronavirus pandemic began, Utah’s economy has emerged as one of the strongest in the nation. Utah’s unemployment rate in April was 2.8%, down from 2.9% in March and nearly as low as it was before the pandemic. Utah is now tied with South Dakota and Nebraska for the lowest unemployment in the nation.

Utah also has the second-highest job growth in the nation, ticking up 2.5% in the last 24 months. This is just behind Idaho’s job growth of 3.9% in the same time period. In fact, Utah and Idaho are the only two states that have added jobs in the last two years. Utah added 35,600 jobs over the past two years, with professional and business services (+15,700) leading the growth.

Other sectors that saw notable gains

were construction (+11,900); trade, transportation and utilities (+9,800); financial activities (+8,800); and manufacturing (+6,900). However, the government (-10,500); leisure and hospitality (-7,600); and natural resources (-1,400) sectors have all lost jobs in the past 24 months.

While the strong job market and low unemployment are very positive for Utah, our state is once again strug-

gling with a labor shortage. Simply put, there are not enough people in the Utah labor force to meet demand for workers. If this continues for too long, it could constrain potential economic growth, especially for smaller companies that must compete with larger employers for these workers.

Bountiful elementary finds ways to break the tension

T

he week of April 19-22 was not a normal week at all at Bountiful Elementary! In fact, it was not odd to see students walking around in their pajamas or students pelting their Principal with silly string. Or perhaps you would see a student walking around with their favorite stuffed animal just like it was totally normal and something they did every day.

All of this is due to PTA president Brittany Cales.

“Brittany is our awesome PTA president, she did most of the work,” said Bountiful Elementary Principal Kristen McDonough. The week was called “Breaking the Tension,” and was designed to give students the opportunity to do fun things they didn’t normally get to do while raising money for their school. One of the reasons it lasted a whole week long was to give everyone a better chance of having the opportunity to participate.

Bountiful Elementary is met with some unique challenges and so it does a lot to support students and their community. Just a few months ago their Bountiful Rack free thrift shop was featured in our education section. Although not a Title I school, their student body represents a wide range of socioeconomic statuses. Because of this, they decided to set a goal that students felt like was attainable.

“We set the bar pretty low--our goal was to raise $1,500,” said McDonough. They raised money by sending home a form with each child with a list of various fun “break the tension” activities and a cost for each one. One of them was so outrageous--it was to have a teacher dress up like a hot dog and then let students put ketchup and mustard all

over them if they were able to raise $50.

“I think the silly-string fight with the principal was by far the most popular activity. The kids loved that,” said Cales. If their $1,500 goal was met, Principal McDonough agreed to be in a crazy video involving silly string.

At the bottom of the form was a place where someone could donate money for another student so they could do an activity even if they didn’t have the money themselves to participate.

“We ended up making $400 on donations alone, which turned out to be 10% of the total raised,” said Cales. Not only did every student get to participate, but by Thursday they had raised enough money to give every teacher $20 of discretionary money to be spent for the class.

The inspiring thing about this story is they easily surpassed their goal. They raised a total of $4,150.

“It was really touching to see the generosity grow as the week went on. Students kept bringing in dollars to donate for other students to have the opportunity to participate,” Cales said.

The funds raised from this event went directly to teachers and staff. The proceeds fund field trips, classroom projects, art classes from outside artists, grants and anything else that teachers need for their students. l

Centerville to celebrate July 4 with one-day event

CENTERVILLE – This year’s Independence Day celebration is on! The event will be held on Saturday, July 3 at Community Park, 1350 North 400 West. Although some traditional components of the celebration such as the breakfast and Main Street parade will not take place due to the pandemic, many of the much-loved activities will be held.

Festivities will kick off that day with the Rotary Club-sponsored 5K Freedom Run which will begin at Community Park. A children's parade will take place along a new route starting at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse at 1461 North Main.

Activities at Community Park will include a Kids’ Corner, vendor booths, food trucks, mobile archery and laser tag and an outdoor concert by Eclipse 6. Other artists will perform throughout the day. An art and quilt show will take place at the Latter-day Saint meetinghouse, 1298 North 400 West, across the street from the park.

That evening, Don Christensen will combine his expertise with the city's resources to put on a fireworks show to celebrate the patriotic holiday at Community Park.

“This year, I’ll be putting all of my efforts into the Fourth of July celebration and will not be hosting the traditional 24th of July fireworks show,” Christensen said.

The change from Smith Park where the celebration has traditionally been held was advised by the Davis County Health Department, Mayor Clark Wilkinson told the city council April 20. Wilkinson said several locations had been considered, and Smith Park was rejected after the

health department indicated that contact tracing would be necessary if festivities were held there. Locating the event at Community Park will also allow for more people to attend, he said.

Chief Paul Child also supported the new location. The proposed location to set off fireworks at Community Park is safer than that traditionally used at Smith Park, he said.

Traffic management would also be easier at Community Park, he said.

“We’re moving it to this larger location where people can feel like they can pull off a great event, especially during this time,” July 4 Celebration Committee Chair Kimberly Curnow said. “We’re looking forward to people being able to gather and celebrate Independence Day. We’re trying to keep as much tradition as we can for Centerville and we’re planning some other things that I think all ages will enjoy.”

The celebration will follow any Davis County Health Department guidelines in place regarding COVID-19, masks or social distancing at that time, Curnow said. The organizing committee is still looking for volunteers to help at the event. For information, call or text Curnow at 801300-7260.

West Bountiful awards contracts for professional services

atthew Nebeker has served as the city’s public defender since 2016. He recently informed the city of his intent to relocate, creating the need for a new public defender.

After a Request for Proposal was issued by the city in February of 2021, the city has awarded a three-year contract to Matthew Brass. He will be paid a flat rate of $700 per month.

West Bountiful City is required by state law to commission an independent audit of its financial statements by a Certified Public Ac-

count annually. The audits are a requirement of the city’s bonding agreement as well as best practices. The annual audit provides transparency and demonstrates to the residents of the city, the city council, the city council and all other interested parties that all funds have been properly accounted for. The city received four proposals in response to its Request for Proposal. All four were reviewed, including input from clients. The contract for audit services has been awarded to Ulrich and Associates at a cost of $14,825. l

Flood insurance maps delayed

he adoption of the Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) is delayed.

Preliminary (FIRMs) were released September 30, 2019 by FEMA for Davis County. The proposed changes show a 40% reduction in regulated flood zone area in Bountiful City, and more accurately represent the flood risk to Bountiful properties.

The Preliminary maps were anticipated to become effective in the spring of 2021. However, some errors were found in the Flood Insurance Study report. Therefore, the Preliminary maps must again go through FEMA’s process for appeal, review of any appeals received, and resolution to the point at which FEMA will finally determine that the maps are going to become effective.

At this point, FEMA will issue a Notice of Final Determination letter six months prior to the maps becoming effective and will include an effective date. The target date for the Preliminary maps becoming effective is now May 2022.

Current and preliminary FIRMs and Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) can be seen on the Bountiful City Interactive Map at www. bountifulutah.gov. Look for the link to the “Interactive Map,” then find the “Themes” menu and turn on the layer “SFHA Preliminary 2019” (the base theme can also be changed to a satellite view for an aerial perspective). Chalk Art Festival returns June 9-12

t’s hard to keep a great tradition down, and there’s plenty of joy now that the Chalk Art Festival, a staple for many years, is coming back this year to the streets of Bountiful. This colorful and joy-filled event will run June 9-12 on Bountiful’s Historic Main Street. It is once again brought to the community by the Joy Foundation, and co-sponsored by Intermountain Healthcare and Altabank.

Artists will take to the sidewalks on Wednesday, June 9, and will continue working on Thursday, June 10 when Bountiful’s Farmers Market celebrates its opening day at

Artwork must be completed by 6 p.m. on Friday, June 11, as the Food Truck League returns to the Town Square area. On Saturday, June 12, there will be an awards ceremony starting at 10 a.m. on the Town Square plaza.

Fireworks restrictions in place once again

T

he annual fireworks restrictions that have been implemented in Bountiful each summer are more important than ever, based on Utah’s extreme drought conditions. City council has given approval to its Fireworks Ordinance for 2021, recommended by Fire Chief Dane Stone from the South Davis Metro Fire Agency.

The ordinance, which will remain in effect until November 20, prohibits fireworks east of Davis Boulevard until 400 North, then drops to 900 East until about 1400 North. The boundary for the prohibition area then drops to 650 East. The area, shown on the accompanying map, is the same restriction area as last year.

In a letter to Bountiful City Manager Gary Hill, Chief Stone said that he had “evaluated areas within Bountiful City where existing and historical hazardous environmental conditions exist and meet the requirements of 15A-5-202.5(b).” That section of the Utah Code allows municipalities to implement fireworks restrictions based on a fire code official’s evaluation of the existing conditions within a city.

If a fire code official determines that hazardous environmental conditions exist and recommends restrictions, a city council may enact an ordinance restricting fireworks.

“It is anticipated these areas will become drier and more hazardous in the month of July,” Chief Stone wrote.

“Based on the determination that existing or historical hazardous environmental conditions exist in the described and restricted areas (as shown on the map), the use of any ignition source, including fireworks, lighters, matches, sky lanterns, and smoking materials is prohibited in the restricted area.”

He said that campfires and all other fires are allowed only in an approved fire pit designed and installed by the forest service or the City. No homemade or makeshift fire pits are allowed.

This restriction does not apply to residential structures or improved fire pits adjacent to a residential structure.

It also doesn’t apply to the Bountiful City Handcart Days public fireworks display because of adequate fire prevention preparations. l

Boredom bust is a must!

T

here are some spectacular activities for summer that are cost effective and don’t require a lot of materials or time, although time is what you have when the kids are at home but don’t know what to do. You may also want to provide fun things to do so there is less screen time.

Bubble painting is a sure way to bring on some smiles as well as attention and interest.

• Cover your kitchen or picnic table in an art paper roll and tape it down. Large white pieces of paper, construction paper or computer paper can work as well.

• Pour bubble solution into a muffin tin and add food coloring. Neon colors are especially nice.

• Give your kids some bubble blowers to dip in the colored water, so they can softly blow beautiful splatters or pretty circles all over the paper. Once it dries, it can be your tablecloth for later.

Cloud Dough creates a wonderful sensory experience, not only with touch but sight and smell. Here are the ingredients.

• 1 cup of hair conditioner. There are different scents at the Dollar Tree that work great.

• 2 cups of cornstarch. Food coloring is optional but will give variety if you want to make more and divide the amount into different containers. You can also add glitter for some sparkly fun.

• If your dough is too dry add more conditioner. If it’s too moist add more cornstarch.

Make a Bird Feeder! This can get messy but is a lot of fun. The birds will be appreciative too.

• You will need cardboard tubes such as those from toilet paper or paper towels, peanut butter, and birdseed.

• Using plastic knives, let the kids spread peanut butter all over the outside of

the tubes.

• Have the kids roll the tubes in birdseed until it covers the peanut butter.

• Tuck the feeders into lower branches of a tree or two.

Play some Balloon Tennis either indoors or out.

• Hand out paper plates that the kids can decorate with crayons, markers, stickers, etc.

• Use large craft sticks (bigger than popsicle sticks). You can find these at Michael’s or any craft store.

• Assist the kids with taping one stick to the back of their plates. Masking tape or something stronger is best.

• Blow up some balloons and have a blast batting them around.

Make a Fairy, Dinosaur or Unicorn Garden using supplies from your backyard and the Dollar Tree.

• Gather sticks and rocks from the backyard.

• Purchase garden supplies and toys such as: fake moss, artificial flowers, gems, smooth rocks, fairies, unicorns, or dinosaurs.

There are also tiny dollhouses and doll furniture there.

• Purchase (still at the Dollar Tree) a large clear plastic or tin foil container to place the garden in.

• Let the kids have a ball arranging all these things into their own beautiful garden that they can have hours of fun playing with.

Besides making fun crafts, there are many simple outdoor activities and places to go in the summer. “My kids and I liked to pack a picnic lunch and play in different parks that had swings and slides,” Mary Messer of Bountiful said. “We would often bring a frisbee along to toss around. We also enjoyed meeting our family and friends on those occasions.

“Another fun activity was riding our bikes together,” she said. “One of our best

memories was riding on the Provo Canyon bike path which goes past Bridal Veil Falls.

There we stopped to take photos and dip our feet in the cold water. Vivian Park was our next stop. There we enjoyed a picnic lunch under a shaded pavilion.”

She said her family appreciated the beauty of nature and wildlife. ‘My two oldest sons Wesley and Andrew were young and my daughter Emily was just a tiny girl who fit in the baby seat on my bike. These simple pleasures have become some of our cherished memories.”

Jessica Ericksen of Bountiful said simple pleasures are among the most enjoyable.

“We love the Splash Pad or hiking,” she said. “I also have outdoor sprinkler days where we come up with water activities, like a little pool full of water beads or sprinklers under the trampoline. The kids love it and

Summers named Utah Rotarian of the Year

ountiful resident Paul Summers, who has been an active member of the community for many years, was named Utah Rotarian of the Year for 202021 by the state’s Rotary Club membership. District Governor Linda Sappington of St. George presented the honor to Summers during a virtual ceremony.

The award is given to just one Rotarian each year who stands out in “service above self,” Sappington wrote, and has a demonstrated commitment to “the Four-Way Test, the Rotarian of the Year who is also seen as an outstanding member who has made significant contributions to the mission and operation of his/her club; to one or more avenues of Community or International Service on the district level; and who is highly visible in promoting Rotary in actions and involvements.”

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million people in nearly 36,000 clubs and 220 countries. Utah has 45 Rotary clubs with more than 1,600 members.

Sappington said Summers was chosen because of his outstanding commitment in organizing a committee to champion some of the 11 tribal communities in Utah Rotary District 5420 that had disproportionately struggling with COVID-19. A separate story on Summers’ involvement in that effort is in this issue of City Journals.

Summers grew up in Idaho and attended the University of Utah, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for the Utah Department of Transportation and the Division of Water Resources before joining JM Montgomery Consulting, later

MWH Engineers, advising on water-related projects.

He joined the SL Rotary Club in 2003 and was active in Club 24 until his retirement in 2006, when he and wife Helen served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alaska. Once they returned, he joined the Bountiful Rotary Club and has served as club president, chairman of the club’s foundation, as membership chair, and as a contributor the club’s highly successful Coats for Kids Show (which will return later this year after being postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

“It’s an extreme honor to receive this recognition from Rotary,” he said. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with so many talented, dedicated men and women in Rotary. I am humbled by this award.” l

Raising empathetic children in stressful times

I

n order to raise empathetic children, you must empathize with them in as many situations as possible. When children experience big or small emotions, you should try to respond in loving, caring ways.

“From my experience of being a mother I’ve learned that empathy comes naturally to some but for others it’s learned,” said Chelsey Cutler of Bountiful, who has a master’s degree in early childhood education.

“Age plays a role but giving children the opportunity to be empathetic and teaching them in those moments are key. Vocalizing how you feel when you get hurt and teaching your kids good responses is crucial. If you stubbed your toe you may say ‘Ouch! Mommy really hurt her toe. Can you give me a hug to help me feel better?’”

Talk to your children about the feelings of others. For instance, “Your brother is feeling angry and sad because you took his baseball mitt without asking and then lost it.”

“It’s helpful to have children role play with their toys,” Cutler said. “‘Oh no, Truck feels sad because his tire popped. What can we do to help him?’ As we help our children to be kind to each other, make sure you aren’t a backseat parent who stands in the distance telling your kids everything they should do.”

Get down on their level and use gentle

hand contact and coaching, she said. “‘Oh man, James is crying because he got hurt with the ball you threw at him. Let’s run over and help him feel better by rubbing his back and asking what he needs.’”

She said you can suggest different ways for children to show empathy such as: “How about you make some cookies and take them to the neighbors,” or “would you be willing to help your Dad rake the lawn. He is very tired right now and would sure appreciate it.”

“When my kids were young, we would visit our dear neighbor Brenda who had survived a tragic accident in her youth,” said Bountiful resident Mary Messer. “We enjoyed playing games with her. She was always so cheerful and made us smile and laugh. This experience enriched our lives and added joy to our days. It also provided us with the opportunity to feel more love and empathy for others.”

Read stories about feelings to your children. Some suggestions are: “Stick and Stone,” “How do I Feel,” “How to get Unstuck From the Negative Muck,” and “I Didn’t do it!” Listening to books about the lives and emotions of other children, whether fiction or not, can aid children immensely in resolving their own sets of thoughts and

feelings.

Most importantly, be a good role model for handling big emotions, and especially the negative ones. How you react and respond with your own unsettled feelings will speak volumes to your children. When there is an overreaction, be willing to explain and apologize if needed.

Always use “I” messages when discussing your emotions to your children such as: “I feel sad when you raise your voice at me,” or “I feel angry when you leave your toys scattered all over the room.” Learn to validate your children’s tough emotions with, “I can understand why you felt embarrassed when you tripped and fell at school today” or “I would feel angry too if someone shoved me on purpose.”

Using pretend or role-play is a great strategy because your children can act out the most effective ways to deal with their tough emotions in a safe space and when they are able to think in calm, rational ways.

“Teaching kids to have empathy is a bit tricky,” Shauna Sabey of Bountiful said.

“Depending on their age and maybe personality, empathy does not come naturally. My 9-year-old is more empathic and expects her 6-year-old brother to be concerned about her feelings and to be honest he usually is not.

“They both hurt each other’s feelings regularly,” she said. “I have found I can’t teach anything when kids are yelling at each other. We try to de-escalate things and then wait for the shoe to be on the other foot. For example, when my 6-year-old gets his feelings hurt from his big sister, we ask him how it makes him feel and if he can understand how his sister feels when he hurts her.” l

Homeschooling: A virtual reality that could continue for many

S

hould you homeschool your children or not? Will you select from myriad curriculums, or will they participate in an online virtual platform? Some questions were answered for you when the pandemic began in March 2020. Those who already homeschooled continued, but for most there was an immediate scramble to know what to do and how to do it.

Fortunately, there is no one set way.

Whether your children continued their studies online with public school teachers or another learning platform such as Utah Virtual Academy K-12, knowing which to choose has been a daunting, individual choice to make.

The Utah Education Network (UEN) has also created a website that contains information for teachers, parents, and students to help learning continue outside or in place of the classroom.

If you choose to homeschool on your own, it is easy to get started in Utah… at least legally. You simply submit a notarized affidavit to the Davis School District and then your children are exempt from the state’s punitive compulsory education laws. If you decide to keep your children enrolled in public school, virtual learning is not necessary.

By now you are aware that there are many ways that you and your children can learn whether apart or together. With all the various

teaching and learning styles, parents and children have discovered things that worked or did not during this trial period.

“Out of our three kids that we had doing online school, third grade worked the best,” said Bountiful mother Amy Hunter. “He had to log in for 30 minutes and then log off and work on the assignment that the teacher had just explained and work on that for 30 minutes. Then he logged back in for the next subject.

“For the kids that are in seventh and ninth grades, only having to log in twice a week for some classes, while other classes were work at your own pace, was confusing and hard to keep track of, since I am working from home with a job that has deadlines.”

“It was a good opportunity to see my child’s strengths and weaknesses with independent learning,” said Tiffany Sorenson of Bountiful. “As it was a first time being in an academic setting with a strict curriculum, I was able to have a peek as to why my kids struggled in some aspects of school. I learned that I could not trust my kids just telling me something was done. They needed to show me. I also discovered they learned much better when they were teaching and showing me the things that they needed to do.”

than their public school peers, but that doesn’t mean it is the best way of learning for all kids and in every circumstance.

The Hansen family of Bountiful had positive but maybe more negative experiences this past year. Tiffanie Hansen said she loved the flexibility of the homeschooling schedule, and that they could spend time as a family doing other things together.

“We learned, however, that we are not

good at homeschooling,” Hansen said. “I really appreciate teachers more than ever. My kids are better at getting their work done right after school, since they’ve learned it’s better not to put it off all day.”

Fortunately, at this point, parents and their children should once again have the choice to be in or out of the public school system. In hindsight, it seems a positive thing that more resources have been created for those who choose to continue the path of successful home learning. l

Summer reading program kicks off in June

FARMINGTON—From storytime to reading challenges for adults, the summer library program promises to be fun for all ages.

“They’re all virtual,” said Davis County Library Director Matt Goff. “We’re playing it safe for now.”

All of the programs will be recorded with links on the library’s website, Goff said. “Except storytime, that will be live on Zoom, Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. They’ll need to register so the person who runs it knows to let them in.”

Summer reading packets will be available at all of the branches and includes reading trackers that can be filled out for a reward, a new story to read and activities to do, he said.

The first virtual program, Fairy Tales with Dewey the Dragon starts June 6 – 12. “Every week there is a new program,” said Goff. “We also have classes for teens with a reading tracker and take home kits for them to do.”

There are programs for adults with trackers too, he said. “We found that last year during the pandemic a lot of adults just wanted something to do. Some time the pandemic will end and we’ll find ways to get authors to come.”

Goff said they’ve been getting 30 to 50 households on for storytime. “So that’s nice that people are coming.”

For a period of time the libraries were open on a limited basis due to COVID restrictions. “We’re back and ready to go – no appointments,” he said. “We’re excited about the summer programs because we weren’t able to do them last year. We expect it will be a lot of fun. I’ve worked at all the libraries and working at the library is always fun.”

Rainbow flags represent friendship, unconditional love, and safety

W

hen 14-year-old Lily’s* mother drove through a tree-lined street in their quiet suburban neighborhood in Davis County, her eyes immediately lit up when she saw a home displaying the rainbow flag. Lily, who is gay, immediately felt a sense of love, acceptance, and safety from her neighbor even though they have never met before.

June is LGBTQ+ Pride month and commemorates the Stonewall riots of June 1969 in Greenwich Village, N.Y., when members of the community participated in spontaneous demonstrations in response to a police raid that occurred at the early hours of June 28, 1969 at Stonewall Inn, a gay bar. The events that took place at Stonewall Inn led to the first gay pride parades in the United States and around the world. Today, Pride is celebrated widely to honor the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Homes and businesses display their support by flying a rainbow flag.

Gilbert Baker created the first rainbow flag with the help of other volunteers for his friend, Harvey Milk, to use at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978. It was a hand-sewn piece displaying eight colors which each signified meaning: hot pink = sex, red = life, orange = healing, yellow = sunlight, green = nature, turquoise = art / magic, indigo = serenity, and violet = spirit. Baker explained how the flag came to be in a 2008 interview with the British newspaper “The Independent.”

“In 1978, when I thought of creating a flag for the gay movement there was no other international symbol for us than the pink triangle, which the Nazis used to identify homosexuals in concentration camps,” Baker said. “Even though the pink triangle was and still is a powerful symbol, it was very much forced upon us. I almost instantly thought of using the rainbow. To me, it was the only thing that could really express our diversity, beauty and our joy.”

When Harvey Milk was assassinated on Nov. 27, 1978, just a few months after the original flag was unfurled, demand for the rainbow flag increased thereby requiring mass production. Due to the unavailability of certain factory colors and production and display logistics, eventually the flag transformed into the widely used six-color design.

However, even more than 40 years later, the rainbow flag – with its symbol of love and acceptance – still causes controversy and anger, especially in conservative communities. Rainbow flags are regularly stolen, vandalized, and even burned.

For many, especially in the smaller, more conservative towns of Utah, displaying the rainbow flag is an act of courage since you may be the only home or business in town that willingly displays allyship and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community and,

in the case of the Autumn Ridge neighborhood in Sandy, could receive backlash and hostility. Yet even singular displays can be the most powerful as they signal to closeted LGBTQ+ members in the neighborhood that they have at least one friend and a place of safety close by.

“This is not a religious issue,” said resident Kristy Donahoo. “This is a humanity issue. Hearing the stories of youth about rejection is just heart-wrenching. The flag represents acceptance and love. Statistics have showed us that if there is just one person in their corner, they are much less likely to consider suicide. And everybody can relate to wanting to feel accepted and wanting to feel loved and it is so important to put that message out there. I was scared too to put the flag out. I was scared to go door to door.

But what I discovered was I didn’t need to be scared anymore. Because there is that commonality in all of us to want to feel accepted and loved and to belong.”

Project Rainbow is an organization that stakes rainbow and other Pride flags at Utah homes and businesses for a small donation.

In 2018, the effort began with 500 flags. In 2019, 1,400 flags were staked. In 2020 with the help of more than 100 volunteers, Project Rainbow staked over 3,000 flags across the state from Spanish Fork to Logan. Eighty percent of the proceeds go to the Utah Pride Center and other LGBTQ+ organizations throughout Utah.

“I think the flag can seem very simple but it could be a very powerful symbol,” said Project Rainbow founder Lucas Horns in an interview with Utah’s CW30. “Just knowing you have an ally can be very impactful just so you know you are not alone. It is breaking down the stereotype in Utah and shows there are a lot of loving and accepting people here.

It is profoundly beautiful to see allies pop up where you least expect it. The community is in every corner in the state.”

Megan Hitt of North Salt Lake, and owner of Jabz Boxing studio, uses Project Rainbow to display Pride flags throughout the year. “We display the rainbow flag as a symbol to acknowledge others’ marginalization,” Hitt said. “I acknowledge it, I mourn for their losses, and I display the flag to communicate that my business is a safe space.”

Natalie Pehrson of Kaysville said there is a difference between “tolerance” and “unconditional love.” Flying a rainbow flag is a deliberate and public act of support, acceptance, and love. Pehrson said, “I fly the Pride flag to honor those creative, loving, kind, loyal, strong, and beautiful people among us whom I love.”

Comprehensive soccer training taught virtually by pros

F

ormer Utah Royals professional soccer player Alex Kimball will again headline a six-week virtual training course that begins June 14 for young female soccer players, ages 12 to 17. A sneak peak of the first week is being offered for free to give those interested a glimpse of the program.

“This course has brought girls from across the country and has provided great insight into many aspects of the game that are often missed when competing at a high level as a teenage female athlete,” said Utah-based Sport Ready founder Robin Cecil, a physical therapist of 25 years. “They are learning from phenomenal professional athletes and specialists how to listen to their bodies, how their own training must be individualized, how their self-talk really matters, and how to increase their confidence both on and off the field.”

The first run of this program this spring brought several positive responses including a young player named Teya, who said, “This course is like nothing I have ever done before. It teaches me what I’ve got to do off the field and it will help me more in the long run.”

Former professional soccer player Colette Jepson Smith along with former BYU player Elise Flake will also be featured in the training along with other sports professionals, including RSL nutritionist Michelle Meinking and mental strength coach Kelsey Ruff. Additionally, sports endocrinologist Nicki Keay will help participants learn to identify symptoms of imbalance training and how to balance their training behaviors,

which will improve performance capacity.

“This training program provides female youth athletes with the strategies necessary to help them meet their sport demands in today’s competitive youth sports structure along with the tools to monitor their readiness to compete,” Cecil said.

“We educate and help you train yourself in ways that you’ve never probably learned before,” Kimball said. “I wish I knew then what I know now.”

Cecil compares high-level athletes to a sports car. “Both burst with speed and agility.

Both have the drive to perform by covering the distance in the fastest and most efficient way possible. To compete, a car and driver need to be ready. Preparation and training are paramount. Before the race, all systems are checked and a racing strategy is in place.

Knowing when to step on the gas and when to step on the break is paramount to staying on the track. It is the same with young athletes. Blindly going the distance without the right preparation and training, a plan, and not taking care of issues as they arise leaves athletes facing a long and dangerous race to the finish.”

Kimball will provide “Alex’s Daily Touch” along with hosting live question-and-answer sessions with NWSL, WSL, National and NCAA D1 female soccer players. The training will take about 30 minutes per day, four to five days a week, depending on the individual schedule of each participant.

Inclusion helps special needs preschoolers and their peers

P

reschool is a formative time for children.

These 3- to 5-year-olds are learning social skills, cognitive practices like following directions, and they’re experimenting with words and communication. It’s a key development phase; but when a child struggles with a disability, these challenges can seem overwhelming.

The Davis Early Childhood Program has the specialists, therapists and teachers to help special needs preschoolers get the services they need to succeed and thrive. Even better, special education services are free.

Davis School District has 21 community preschool campuses, with a special education teacher in every school so special needs children can be integrated into the classroom. Although some parents worry about their children being treated differently by children without disabilities, Amy Garlick said there is no cause for concern.

“We create inclusive classrooms where students with disabilities feel welcomed and valued by their peers,” said Garlick, Davis School District Early Childhood Director.

“These little preschoolers don’t even see a difference. They just take kids with disabilities under their wings. I think we’re seeing less and less of that [stigma]. It’s important for kids who don’t have disabilities to be

around these children.”

If students with disabilities need more focused services, there are nine preschools in the district dedicated to helping kids develop cognition, language, social behavior, motor skills and other abilities. Other options for services include home-based, home-hospital and talking-time, based on each child’s goals and abilities.

Assessments are used to determine eligibility for special education classes. The student goes through an evaluation with a special education professional, then, if a child qualifies for services, an Individual Education Program is created with the help of the parents. Progress reports are given to parents throughout the year to track their child’s accomplishments.

“Based on how they do, they’re either given a green light, where they don’t need services, or we might find a condition that needs additional screening,” Garlick said.

“Sometimes, a child might just need a little bit of help, then they go into kindergarten without needing any additional services.

Early intervention is key for kids to succeed.

The sooner we get kids into services, the better it is. They’re so eager to learn and there’s so much development going on in these young years.”

McKinzi Bridgewater’s 4-year-old son, Bowen, started preschool in February of 2020. He attends the Canyon Creek program, working with teacher Jamie Reese.

Bowen needed help with his speech and the behavior he exhibited when he wasn’t understood.

“I’ve seen huge improvements in his behavior,” Bridgewater said. “It was hard to understand him and he was frustrated. Now, he’s not as frustrated because we can understand him most of the time.”

Bowen is also learning social skills. His teacher reported that he’s not afraid to go up to people in the class and make friends. “I’ve noticed what a good friend he’s become,” Bridgewater said. “His teacher says he’s a leader.”

When Bowen starts kindergarten this fall, his progress will be reviewed by his team to see what services he’ll need to continue improving.

“I’m just so grateful for the staff there,” Bridgewater said. “They are so amazing and so caring and they understand how to help him. He’s improved by leaps and bounds.”

Garlick gets emotional when talking about the special needs students and the advances they make every day. “I wholeheartedly believe in this program and I know what we are doing is just amazing and what we see in kids is amazing. I just can’t say enough about this program.” l

Chamber honors healthcare heroes

KAYSVILLE—For more than a year healthcare workers have been on the frontlines battling COVID and helping others while risking their own lives. Last week, the Davis Chamber of Commerce Women in Business honored six exceptional women as healthcare heroes.

“I’ve watched as healthcare professionals have given 110 percent every day in caring for others while doing it with a smile and such grace,” said Judy Williamson, Administrator, Intermountain Layton Hospital. “Last March when things shut down we thought it would be a sprint. Surely this will pass quickly.”

Communication was coming fast and furious, she said. “We were trying to figure out how to clean the rooms and keep staff safe, when to restrict visitors and much, much more. Toilet paper and wipes were gone. We were consistently working on how to stretch supplies.”

Williamson said they were vigorously putting plans in place waiting for patients to come in. “We shuffled resources to prepare for the impending wave. Some nurses were put in quarantine or left the profession for good.”

As summer approached they thought perhaps the sprint had slowed, she said. “But

when numbers started to surge again we began to question why we were still running the race and how brutal the race had become.”

As the vaccine rolled out, Williamson said joy returned to the halls of the hospital. “We pressed forward in the race and felt a sense of renewal as we carried on. It’s not over. We still have miles to go but we can’t do it unless we work together. Thank you to all the healthcare givers.”

Lakeview Chief Nursing Officer Marilyn Mariani selected House Supervisor Rhiannon Blackburn as their hero. “She provides the care we’d want to receive,” said Mariani.

“She was in her last trimester of pregnancy and came in extra shifts. She was the glue for the unit, taking on the hardest patients when others couldn’t.”

Dr. Steven Meek with Tanner Clinic honored Kathy Bennett, Clinical Services Director. “COVID changed the world for all of us,” he said. “It brought out the best and the worst in people. These people have dedicated their entire lives with a mission to help patients. I was touched by the sacrifice we saw. Kathy Bennett has been giving her whole life.”

Nurse Manager, Medical/Surgical/ICU Tawnya Willie was selected as Intermountain Layton Hospital’s hero. “Last year Tawnya stepped in and cared for the patients’ well-be-

ing,” said Nurse Administrator Tiffany Bears.

“Even as she was experiencing burnout she took care of her coworkers when they suffered burnout. She truly is an example.”

Michael Jensen, CEO of Davis Hospital and Medical Center honored Patrice Weaver, Infection Control Manager. “In March 2020 when we set up an incident command Patrice was there,” he said. “Without her skill and Diane Hill wisdom I’m not sure we could have responded so quickly. She is vital to the well-being of our patients.”

Diane Hill, Manager of House Supervisors and Throughput and Floatpool was selected by Ogden Regional Hospital. “Diane’s love of people led her to nursing,” said Tracy Bertagnole, COO. “She was the first to jump in when the COVID surge happened. What anglers should know about fishing during a drought year

fter Gov. Spencer Cox issued executive orders declaring a state of emergency due to drought conditions, low water levels are top of mind for many Utahns. Drought impacts many things, including fish and wildlife species. If you are planning some fishing trips this summer, here are a few things to consider before you head out.

How drought impacts fish species Drought impacts fish by reducing the amount of water available in lakes, reservoirs and streams throughout the state.

These are primary habitats for Utah’s fish, and having less water affects fish in multiple ways.

“This smaller amount of water heats more quickly and warms to higher temperatures than when there isn't a drought,” Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Sportfish Coordinator Randy Oplinger said. “Warm water also holds less oxygen than colder water. The combination of high temperatures and low oxygen can stress fish, causing poor growth and disease. Fish can also die when temperatures are too warm or the oxygen levels get too low.”

Trout in low-elevation waterbodies have the greatest likelihood of being impacted by the drought this year, but low water levels and high water temperatures can affect all fish species.

How fishing could possibly be impacted this summer If you enjoy fishing from a boat, you should try to visit your favorite lakes and reservoirs as soon – and as often – as you possibly can. Water levels at some reservoirs and lakes could be so low by July that boat ramps may not be functional. Before you plan a boating trip, be sure to check for updates on each waterbody to see if the ramps are open, especially later in the summer.

The drought may also change the number of fish stocked into certain waterbodies this year.

“There are a few waterbodies where we are expecting to see low water levels due to drought or maintenance work, and in an effort to decrease the number of fish that may die as a result of low water, we have decided to decrease the stocking in these waterbodies,” Oplinger said. “We are not entirely cutting the stocking of any waterbody, and if we decrease the number of fish stocked into one lake, we will reallocate those fish to another waterbody where we don’t anticipate low water levels. Also, these anticipated stocking changes only impact 1-2% of the lakes and reservoirs in Utah and don’t include any of the major fisheries.”

How to help fish during a hot, drought year If you want to give the fish you catch and release a better chance of survival during the drought, you should consider fishing in the mornings or evenings when temperatures are cooler. Another way to

help fish is to pick a fishing spot that has deeper, cooler water, so you can release any caught fish into an area where they are more likely to survive.

“Basically, try not to fish near little coves that have shallow, stagnant warm water,” Oplinger said. “Instead, pick a spot where you can release your fish into better quality water to increase their survival rates during this hot, drought year.”

Tips for handling fish to decrease stress • Use single hooks on lures and bend down the barbs for easy release.

• Minimize the time you spend “fighting” the fish and any hands-on handling.

• Use rubber or coated nylon nets to protect a fish’s slime layer and fins.

• Quickly remove the hook with forceps or needle-nosed pliers.

• Minimize the amount of time the fish is exposed to the air, especially when the weather is warm. And keep your hands wet when handling the fish.

• If the fish is deeply hooked, don’t pull on the line. Instead, cut the line as close as

possible to where it is hooked and leave the hook.

• Allow the fish to recover in the net before you release it.

• If the fish doesn’t stay upright when you release it, gently move it back and forth.

“If you intend to release trout after catching them – and you expect them to survive – you need to consider the impacts of low and warm water conditions,” said Brett Prettyman, the Trout Unlimited communications director for science, Western water & habitat and headwater programs.

“Drought leads to reduced flows and increased temperatures. Each of these can individually create deadly conditions for trout – together they will almost assuredly end in the loss of fish. The additional stress of being caught could easily be the final blow during drought situations. Unless you plan to keep the fish, you should consider not fishing when conditions could be fatal to the fish, particularly where fisheries are sustained by natural recruitment.” l

Braves’ teams finish prep season at state

irls golf The Lady Braves finished 7th in the state 5A golf tournament contested at Spanish Oaks in Spanish Fork. Senior Vanna Einerson was the top golfer for Bountiful, finishing with rounds of 80 and 74 at 8-over.

That was good for 5th place individually.

Boys tennis At the 5A boys tennis state tournament, senior Soren Mickelson, playing in second singles, won his first round match against Alta’s Jordan Robinson 6-3 6-4. He advanced to play Coen Wooley of Park City, falling 6-2 6-0. Mickelson finished the season with a record of 9-4.

The Braves’ first singles team of senior Alex Eyring and sophomore Zach Eyring won their first round match against Salem Hills’ Tag Brower and Stephen Strong by a score of 6-2 6-7 (3) 6-1. They lost in the second round to Brighton’s Owen Hopkin and Fred Owen 5-7 6-2 6-3-two marathon matches for the Bountiful brothers. They finished the season with a record of 11-2.

Girls lacrosse The Braves earned a third seed in Division C for the first-ever girls lacrosse state tournament, and got a first-round bye. But their season ended when they were upset by 14th seeded Westlake 14-7 in the second round.

Bountiful finished region play at 4-6 and overall at 6-8.

The Braves were outscored 125-151 on the season.

Boys lacrosse

Bountiful blasted Copper Hills 19-4 in the opening round of the Division B boys state lacrosse

tournament, moving into a quarterfinal match with Skyview on May 21 (after our press deadline). The Braves finished 8-2 in region (second place) and were 10-7 on the year entering the game against Skyview.

Boys soccer Farmington ended the Braves’ season in the second round of the state 5A soccer tourney, besting Bountiful 3-1. The Braves beat Timpanogos 1-0 in the first round and finished the year 10-7 overall. Dallin Burgin led the team in scoring with 10 goals on the year, followed

by Kalei Medeirnos with 5. Keeper Parke Hayford had three shutouts this season.

Here’s how Bountiful did in events: Senior Dalton Mortensen placed 7th in the 3200 meters The team of Sammi Stewart, Sami Adamson, Sarah Wilkinson, Isabella Hanks, Eden Roberts and Macie Johnson placed 5th in the 4 x 800 meter relay. Four runners from those six were in the finals.

The team of Kimball Mason, Kohl Sanders, Andrew Jensen, Ethan Mabey, Mortensen and Daniel Leszynski placed in the 4 X 800 relay. Four runners from those six were in the finals.

Connor Draper placed 4th in the 100 meters.

Draper also placed 7th in the 200 meters. l

I’d been there with my family some years earlier and was anxious to share it with my new husband, even if it meant spending part of the day on a long drive up a winding road when we could be sitting on a beach. There are just some things worth driving long distances for and the overlook of the Na Pali Coast on the Hawaiian island of Kauai is one of them.

The Kalalau Lookout is 4,000-feet above sea level and the view into the ridges and peaks and valley below is nothing short of spectacular. The drive along Waimea Canyon, what has become known as “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” is also pretty breathtakingly amazing.

We ascended, stopping at all lookouts, as is my wont, and noticing as we did that more and more clouds were filling the sky. Four-thousand feet is pretty high up there. Even clouds are comfortable at 4,000 feet and sure enough, as we drove the last few hundred feet to the very end of the drive, we were enveloped in a cloud.

And in that particular cloud, there were no views past the end of our arms, much less along the rugged cliffs of the Na Pali and down the Kalalau Valley to the ocean and beyond.

It was a disappointment, but at least it wasn’t snowing like the time a few days earlier when we’d gotten up in the wee hours of the morning and driven up 10,000 feet to see the sunrise over Haleakala crater on Maui, just like everybody said you should. Turns out you only should if

you check the weather report first. Sometimes you’re better off just sleeping in. And then sitting on a beach. But we sighed and shrugged and tried not to be angry or disappointed and our nine-month-old marriage survived. And later we laughed and told the story and others laughed with us.

And now we are approaching our 42nd year together and there have been all kinds of sighs and shrugs and trying not to be angry or disappointed and laughing and sharing and learning along the way. Sometimes the views have been clouded in. Sometimes they have been spectacular.

We kept at it.

It was a full 35 years later when we next attempted the 18-mile drive from sea level on the south shore of Kauai to the overlook on the north.

This time we knew better. This time we checked the weather report (easier now with internet) and got up early and drove straight to the top, where the views were … true to expectation … spectacular. And we hiked around in warm sunshine and I took pictures from every possible angle – twice. Or maybe four times.

As we finished our hike the clouds started to fill in, at first dancing around the trees and cliffs, then filling them all in.

On the way back to our car, we passed a young couple who’d just pulled in. By now, there was nothing but cloud to see. We greeted

them but said nothing at all about the conditions. Until they asked.

Was it clear this morning? she said.

Yes, we answered, watching them smile and shrug and try not to be disappointed. We were you 35 years ago, we said. We missed the view then too, but we came back. I hope they will too.

Because after that first time you know better when to come. You know to wait for the right conditions. To start early. Not to be distracted.

And it works. And when it doesn’t work the first time, it’s even better the second.

Just don’t give up.

Before COVID, when the hubbie and I used to travel, I’d book us in places that provided breakfast, because I love me a good breakfast buffet.

At one hotel, the breakfast bar offered freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and I couldn’t resist. I don’t usually drink fruit juice because it has so much sugar, which is hilarious because I have no problem downing an entire box of Milk Duds.

Anyway. I poured myself a cup of beautiful, pink grapefruit juice and was walking back to our table when a herd of unruly children came dashing around the corner and crashed into me, spilling grapefruit juice all over my shirt and the floor.

I stood there dripping and waiting for an apology that never came. The monsters ran past me to fill their plates with bacon. I eyed them scornfully, poured more juice and put on my Hat of Judgement.

What kind of mother lets her kids douse perfect strangers with grapefruit juice? What heathen had failed to teach these kids manners?

I got back to my table and told my husband to move so I could take his seat because he had a better view of the dining room. I needed to see the parents of these miscreants and judge them accordingly.

licious intent. Through narrowed eyes, I watched the kids eat all the bacon, touch all the bananas, grab several muffins and gallop back to their table, where their mom sat staring at her phone.

My judgement level increased. This neglectful mother didn’t realize her childish baboons were running amok; she had no idea they spilled juice all over me, and she was too involved in her social media and texting to be a good mother.

Verdict rendered. Guilty as charged.

Gavel pounded.

Oh, it felt good to be so superior.

But then my stupid brain stepped in.

doesn’t like to cause trouble. “Perhaps you’re being a bit harsh.”

“Shut up, brain. I’m busy.”

Instead of shutting up, my brain brought up a memory of my daughters. We were at an all-you-can-eat-buffet and the girls were not sitting like civilized humans. They were fighting, dropping food all over the floor, running back for seconds and thirds, and taking every single brownie from the dessert bar.

They were animals. And I just sat there, so happy for the break from making dinner.

I’d been that mom I was judging. My daughters had often run amok. If I’d had a cell phone when my kids were little, I would have been on that phone all the damn time. I slowly removed my Hat of Judgement and reevaluated the current situation.

I turned to my husband and said, “It’s just juice. They’re just kids. She’s just a mom.”

He didn’t know what I was talking about, but he chewed his bacon, nodded, and said, “That’s good.”

Suddenly, I was teary-eyed and felt a camaraderie with this mother. She was in the trenches, doing her very best. Aren’t we all?

The more I practice dropping judgement, the easier my life is. It’s exhausting calling out everyone’s behavior. There are better ways to spend my time, like drinking fresh grapefruit juice and remembering when my kids were wild animals.

BOUNTIFUL’S FAIRY CITY CELEBRATES ITS 6TH YEAR Byline

BOUNTIFUL--You might not realize that Davis County is being visited again this year by another special community. It’s right where it’s been for six years, tucked along the path behind the Bountiful Branch library, delighting children and adults alike with its annual emergence. And it’s a labor of love for resident Kerry Goodrich, creator of Fairy City. sad. I asked her why and she said that Trump had announced his candidacy for president and she thought the world was going to end.”

Kerry was shocked to hear her talk that way, and decided she needed to create some magic for fourth graders. “And this idea really came to me out of nowhere.”

That first year, 2016, Kerry planned to make just six fairy doors “as a random act of kindness. I ran to the craft shop, got some things and just started painting. They were meant to be a message of hope and magic.

That’s how it got started.”

There’s quite a backstory to Fairy City, and its founder who is affection-

ately known as the Crazy Fairy Lady.

Kerry says she was a troubled youth who spent a lot of time out of classrooms. One of the places she hung was along the path behind the library.

Her initial six doors soon morphed to 40 that first year, including some mushrooms and ladybugs, and placed in several locations. Cnce she saw the reactions of children who spotted her creations, and got her first thank you notes, she was hooked.

“I was concerned at first that the city would be upset about me putting these up, but the landscapers have been very careful with them,” she said. “I’ve heard they even pick them up while weeding and then put them right back in place. And what I found is that many people love them and leave behind all kinds of crystals, necklaces and even letters and notes for the fairies. All I wanted to do was help cheer someone up, and I think Fairy City has done that.”
