BIG CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS COMING TO BOUNTIFUL TRAILS SYSTEM Byline

BOUNTIFUL–For the past eight years, a group of interested and motivated residents have volunteered countless hours as members of the Bountiful Trails Advisory Committee. They’ve created an extensive Trails Development Implementation Plan to serve as a guideline for development of new trails and improvement of existing ones in the community.

Those efforts are starting to bear fruit, boosted by $2 million from a voter-approved General Obligation Bond in 2020, and the recent receipt of a $500,000 matching grant from the Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation.

City Parks Director Brock Hill, along with assistant city engineer Todd Christensen and city planner Francisco Astorga, gave the Bountiful City Council an update on pending and planned trail projects. Some of them are set for completion before or near year’s end.

“Our outline as we’ve presented it here is a living, breathing, working document,” Hill said. “There will most likely be changes as we progress, but this is a timeline we’re working towards.”

He said that some projects may move up the list (for timetables for completion) and others move down, as lots of components come into play when developing these trails. Weather, material costs and availability, and manpower (including volunteer labor) are all factors that can fluctuate.

Sounds of Summer Summer has arrived and with the warmer temperatures come all of our favorite summertime traditions— barbeques, camping, fireworks, car shows, rodeos, parades, and festivals. As doctors of audiology, we like to use summer as an opportunity to remind members of the community to protect their hearing while participating in all of these fun activities (and the not-so-fun activities, like yard work). While much of our time is spent diagnosing and treating existing hearing loss, it is important that we provide preventative education to help keep your hearing as healthy as possible for as long as possible.

The loudness of sound is measured in decibels (dB).

For frame of reference, normal conversation is considered to be a moderately loud sound at around 60 dB. Your vacuum cleaner likely runs at about 70 dB, classified as a loud sound.

Any sound louder than 85 dB can cause permanent hearing loss. For example, prolonged exposure (longer than 30 minutes) to the following very loud sounds (90-110 dB) is very dangerous for your ears: • Lawnmower (90 dB) • Leaf blower (110 dB) • Chain saw • Power tools • Sporting events • Motorcycles • AirPods/headphones • Concerts

Area 1, labeled “Urban,” is for those areas closest to the city, with established transportation corridors that make it easy to connect to residential and commercial areas. The priority of these trails is to provide easy connections to parks and open spaces and parking, and provide a place for a pump truck or bike park.

Eventually, trails would be developed from the new Washington Park to Creekside Park, Creekside Park to Mueller Park, Eggett Park to the Holbrook Trailhead, and Tolman Park (often called Rocket Park) to the “B” trailhead. These trails are on the Master Plan list but not yet given a specific priority or timeframe.

Among the other five areas are plans for trails from Hidden Lake to North Canyon, North Canyon to Mueller Park, Mueller to Holbrook, Holbrook to Ward, and what’s known as Buckland, the area near the “B” on

the mountain.

“We’ve assigned each of the projects a priority designation, with what we’re calling ‘1a’ projects targeted to be completed this year,” Hill said.

Those ‘1a’ projects include the trail from Holbrook Canyon to Ward Canyon and the Summerwood link to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (set for July); trails from Elephant Rock for hiking and biking (August); Holbrook Bridge to connect the Holbrook and Ward trail to Holbrook Canyon and an extension from Elephant hiking/down to the trailhead (September), and the North Canyon Trailhead and a connection of Creekside to Davis Blvd. with a bridge (October). Again, all of these timetables are subject to change depending on circumstances.

Wrapping Ukraine with a heart of quilts

“Q

uilters are givers and this is our quilters’ way of giving back,” said Gina Halladay, co-founder of Wrap Ukraine with Quilts by Hello Cottons. “One night, I was talking to a friend of mine from Ukraine about how she had to flee her home. I asked her if I were to send her a quilt and she knew that someone here in the U.S. was thinking about her, would that help at all? She just burst into tears and said, ‘Yes.’ So we sprang into action!”

Since March 17, Wrap Ukraine with Quilts has been able to donate 3,156 quilts to Ukrainian refugees. “Without people donating the quilts, none of this would be happening. Quilters desire to give, help and share their talents. The really special thing about a quilt is that they are a legacy item. In the future, it can be passed down and the story of how it was given can be shared. Each quilt is handmade, it’s unique and lets the receiver know they are cared for and it can help keep them warm,” said Halladay.

“We started this project, but it’s people like Linda Edminster, owner of Quilter’s Attic – one of our donation sites, who are getting the word out there in an old school grassroots way,” she said. “Quilters, telling quilters and it’s thanks to individuals and businesses who are sharing this that we have received donations from 35 states.”

They work with a local non-profit called Lifting Hands International that provides aid to refugees, in the USA and abroad, said Halladay. “They are sending out cargo planes of supplies every two weeks to Ukrainian refugee camps. It costs them $5,000 every time they send out a cargo plane, but they don’t charge us anything to send our quilts along with the other supplies. We will also accept store bought or handmade blankets, because they need other bedding materials in general.”

“At the end of 2021, my friend Beth Hopkins from Wichita, Kansas, and I were going to start an online store with online quilting classes, but when we went to buy our supplies all the fabrics were on backorder due to the pandemic,” said Halladay.

“Then after the war in Ukraine started, we pivoted and used our website and supplies to start Wrap Ukraine with Quilts.”

“My husband saw the article on KSL about Wrap Ukraine with Quilts and he shared it with me because I had been looking for articles about quilting and of course my heart is just wide open for these people. I can only imagine what they are going through,” said Edminster. “First we shared in our newsletter that they were looking for donated quilts and then we decided to become a drop off site for quilt donations. Our idea was the easier you make it for people

the better.”

“Her shop has collected 10% of the quilts we have received so far,” said Halladay. “We both are planning to at least do this through the end of this year. Right now, we have a three man team. My husband, Hal, my friend Beth and myself. I’m working about 12 hours a day managing the quilt donations. So, I am thinking I may need to hire someone. We are also looking for some warehouse or office space. We are thinking by the end of this year we will get 10,000+ quilts or more.”

“Quilters love to quilt and they are always starting new projects, they eventually run out of people to give them to and end up with some sitting in their closet, this is a great way to make use of them,” said Edminster. “The fun thing is some women go the extra mile and sew in a pocket or stuffed animal to make their quilt even more special.

Another woman from Finland even made baby caps to send along with her quilts. It’s sad to think that there are babies being born into this mess.”

“My Ukrainian friend, Italia, fled to Poland until she could get to Spain to stay with her brother- in-law. Her husband and brother-in-law stayed to fight for their country,” said Halladay. “Italia ended up suffering from stress related blindness and PTSD after she escaped. The stress levels of these people are really high. We can't even comprehend what these people are going through.

Italia has gained back her sight and luckily she works for a tech company, so she can still work remotely, but that is not the situation for many people.”

Halladay said it was really important for their website to have two things: a live quilt donation counter and a way to connect the quilt maker with the quilt receiver which they have been able to do through a QR code. “When you donate a quilt you can register it and get a QR code and once received the receiver can scan the QR code and be connected with the maker of the quilt.

Connecting people makes it real. We have heard stories of people becoming pen pals or connecting through social media and it just creates that human connection that is so needed right now.”

“One important thing to remember when donating is that there are different qualities of fabric,” Edminster said. “Cheaper fabrics will not last. The fabric will disintegrate and the color will be lost. These quilts could have a lasting legacy and quality fabric is an important part of that.”

“For the future, I will be visiting Poland in July to plan a humanitarian retreat there later this year,” said Halladay. “We are hoping to get a sewing machine company to donate some machines that we could use to start a business there to help employ Ukrainian mothers who have been displaced

in Poland. We would help support them to sell their quilts.”

At this humanitarian retreat they are planning for in September, the goal would be to teach any refugees to sew, who want to learn. “We will be taking a crew of people who know how to sew to help teach,” said Halladay. “There will be an application process and it will not just be fun and games. It will be some work, so we will have to vet people. Our goal would be to make as many quilts we all can in two days. We would also be going to the border to hand out quilts and help work in the food trucks there.”

Most of the refugees are women who do not have a place to go back to, she said. “We don’t know how long this war will last or how long it will take to rebuild afterwards, so these women need a way to make money and provide for themselves and their families in the meantime.”

Quilt donations are accepted at Halladay’s house in Lehi or at the Quilter’s Attic in Bountiful, Halladay said. “But you can ask your local quilt shop if they are accepting donations. For people who do not quilt, we welcome donations to cover extra expenses to send and receive quilts. We have Venmo @hellocottons and we take checks or cash as well. Right now, we are working to become a foundation, so that donations will be tax deductible. We were given free booth space at the Quilts Festival at the Salt Lake Convention Center. We will be accepting square donations there.”

Cast of thousands make up latest Book of Mormon videos

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com PROVO—People all over the world have followed the Book of Mormon videos through three seasons with season four coming out in the fall. The videos, produced

by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, depict stories and characters from the pages of the scriptures that come to life on a set in Provo as the highly anticipated season five of the series began filming.

Season four covers the Savior’s visit to the Americas. Season five, the last and final installment, is made up of some of the favorite stories that were skipped over in the first four seasons.

“It covers the Stripling Warriors, Samuel the Lamanite, the Jaredites,” said Producer Jaelan Petrie. “It has the biggest sets, the most actors, the biggest schedules and an international one as well. It’s the greatest hits – the most favorite stories.”

church produced a series of videos depicting stories from the Bible. “We completed those in time to do the Book of Mormon,” Petrie said. “The development and writing phase is pretty long. Representatives from the church get together in a writers room and go over content and decide what stories and episodes we want to do. A steering committee finalizes that and sends it to the First Presidency to review.”

Media Director Bill Elliott is from Fruit Heights and spent 23 years at NBC before coming here 11 years ago. “I grew up at Disneyland,” he said. “I played Tigger as a kid.

I think that created a spark of imagination in my mind. I got an internship at CNN and ended up in the Oval Office with Reagan.”

I was walking down the hall and saw Lucille Ball. Another time I ran into Dick Van Dyke. I got to hang out with Jimmy Stewart and I said ‘OK I like this.’”

Elliott went on all the shows and did interviews. “It was ‘must see TV’ when I was there,” he said. “I worked on Frazier, Friends and the West Wing. It was fun but the Book of Mormon videos are inspiring. It’s the highlight of my career.”

The response to the videos has been overwhelmingly positive, he said. “It adds to the experience of scriptures. It’s complementary. You can read a portion and show the Book of Mormon videos. To be honest it’s hard for smaller children to stay attentive but with the videos they’re up front and center.”

It’s translated into 15 languages, said Rasband. “We want to make it available to everyone in the world in their own language. It’s a worldwide church and we have members and friends of our church everywhere.”

The Book of Mormon is a companion scripture to the Bible, he said. “The Book of Mormon videos are being produced with the express purpose of bringing people to God our father and the Lord Jesus Christ. That is our ultimate goal.” l

Windridge Elementary’s Casey Pickett is Principal Rookie of the Year

E

lementary school principals have a long to-do list. They create safe learning environments, shape the vision of academic success, cultivate leadership and find ways to improve instruction.

Windridge Elementary’s Principal Casey Pickett nailed it.

Pickett was selected by her peers to receive the Principal Rookie of the Year for Davis County and then went on to win Principal Rookie of the Year for Utah through the Utah Association of Elementary School Principals.

“It’s so nice to have [that recognition] from the colleagues that you work with,” Pickett said. “It felt really rewarding and it was even better to hear that from my peers.”

Each year, UAESP recognizes principals who demonstrate excellence during the school year. Pickett just completed her third year at Windridge and said she focused on three areas that helped her win the award: The creation of a STEM lab, the school’s Platinum STEM designation and the incorporation of 17 sustainable development goals into STEAM education.

“For the STEM lab, we took apart a computer lab. There were two rooms that

I opened up,” she said. “I got a lot of support from the Davis Education Foundation in creating this space for everyone to come and work on STEM or bigger projects.”

Stacy Williams, a third-grade teacher at Windridge, was presented with the Heidi Martin Mighty Heart Educator of Excellence Award in 2019 and given $10K to use at the school. She put that money toward the STEM lab to offer more engagement for students.

“I wanted a place that would be easy and hands-on for kids to be able to come and easily enjoy anything related to STEM,” Williams said. “It gives us the space and opportunities that are much more difficult to do in a smaller cramped classroom. Casey has always 100% supported this vision. She found ways for us to find more money and ideas to support STEM education at Windridge.”

Along with the STEM lab, Pickett organized the creation of an outdoor learning space with projectors and pads for the kids to sit on.

“We have a garden and we have a greenhouse and we have a composter, all of these things. It’s been so much fun,” Pickett said.

The Platinum STEM designation, earned through the Utah STEM Action Center, took a bit of time. With less than 20 schools in the state achieving the platinum-level classification, Pickett enlisted a committee of educators to help submit the application.

“The Utah STEM Action Center is such a great group to work with,” she said.

“They really want you to be successful.

They really help you through the process.

I was able to make some connections with people that helped with my lab and my outdoor classroom, and they kind of all go together.”

Pickett asked teachers at Windridge to incorporate the 17 sustainable development goals into STEAM education. The school partnered with the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program for the STEAM upgrade. BTS helps teachers include art in the STEM curriculum so kids can learn through painting, theater, dance and music, in a variety of ways.

“I love it when teachers can be a little bit more creative and thoughtful about how they want kids to have intentional experiences that are service-oriented and help others and help our community and help our world,” she said.

Before taking the principal role at Windridge, Pickett taught elementary school at Boulton, Taylor and Oak Hills.

She served as an assistant principal at Kay’s Creek and Oak Hills for three years, before moving to Windridge.

For the upcoming school year, Pickett will continue the focus on STEAM and work on literacy concepts and practices.

“We typically have great scores overall at Windridge, but we’re looking at data to find where kids have holes, especially since COVID,” she said. “We want to really zero in on what each child needs in their literacy journey.” l

Bountiful Council approves FY23 budget

By Tom Haraldsen | tom.h@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—City council has approved a $75 million budget for fiscal year 2023, which begins July 1, as well as okaying annual transfers within two city funds and making minor adjustments to the current year’s budget. By state law, cities must have their budgets approved in June and hold public hearings on any proposals.

Assistant City Manager Galen Rasmussen prepared the proposed budget which has been posted on the city’s website for several weeks. No one from the public offered any comments during the three public hearings on Tuesday night. The budget totals $75,076,328.

Approved was the transfer of $2,582,000 from the Light & Power Fund to the General Fund, and a $75,000 transfer from the Landfill Fund to the Recycling Fund of the city.

These are done every year by city officials.

Part of the approved budget includes the awarding of RAP Grants for recreation, arts and parks programs. For FY 23, grants were given to the Bountiful Davis Art Center for $17,335, the Bountiful Historical Preser-

vation Foundation for $7,500, CenterPoint Legacy Theatre for $10,000, and Joy Foundation for $7,000.

There is no increase in property taxes for Bountiful for FY23. The tax rate of 0.000967 is the same as the current year budget, and much below the average for cities in Davis County of 0.001374.

Mayor Kendalyn Harris pointed out that municipal budgets are worked on throughout the year, with Rasmussen and city staff already formulating ideas for the FY24 budget that will be prepared and submitted for approval in June of 2023.

“It’s an ongoing process that takes countless hours to study and prepare,” she said. “We owe a great deal of thanks to our staff for working out details for these budgets.”

She also invited the public to become more involved in that process through attendance at department budget discussions which are always open to residents. l

The Olympic skiers were guests aboard the planes during a flight demonstration practice run Friday in preparation for the much anticipated Warriors Over the Wasatch Air show Saturday and Sunday at Hill Air Force Base.

“It was so insane,” said Caldwell when she was back on firm ground. “I didn’t know if I’d keep my food down. I can’t believe these guys do this all the time. It was tense.”

“It was crazy,” said Schoenefeld. “It was like an elephant on your chest and your vision goes away for a minute. We were going 4G’s and I thought that was crazy then we went faster and I thought ‘oh gee.’”

It was a real treat, said Lt. Col. Ryan Yingling. “It was unique and fun for us and fun for you guys. It was a blast. We got through everything and went into super sonic airspace and broke the sound barrier.”

They started training on the F-16 early this morning, said Jake Impellizzeri, Thun-

derbird eight. “It was information by firehose. I put Ashley through the wringer. We pulled 9G’s and 1.28 Mach. We did loops and rolls and she got some stick time. It was an honor.”

What they do in the Olympics showcases a beacon of excellence, he said. “It’s doing something greater than ourselves.That’s what they represent. It's an inspiration to our team that’s what we try to achieve in the Air Force.”

Caldwell said she’s trained her whole life to reach the Gold medal standard. “The Air Force sets a high bar. I give a high performance in skiing and these guys give a high performance in a different way. It’s two different worlds.”

An aerial doesn’t get any less scary, said Schoenefeld. “When I do a triple backflip I’m nervous every day. When we took off I thought ‘oh we’re about to go fast.’”

It was absolutely incredible, said Caldwell. “My Gold medal went through the speed of sound. This was the highlight of my post Olympic experience. It was a dream come true and now it’s off my bucket list.”

Fireworks restrictions in place for Bountiful

BOUNTIFUL–The continued dry and hazardous conditions of areas in and around Bountiful have necessitated adoption of a fireworks ordinance for 2022, one that will expire on Jan.1, 2023.

Chief Dane Stone from the South Davis Metro Fire Service Area recommended the restrictions to the city council, which passed the ordinance on May 24. It prohibits the discharge of fireworks at all times in these areas of Bountiful: East of 400 East from Pages Lane to 500 South East of Orchard Drive from 500 South to the North Salt Lake border In other areas as designated by the agency Much of the city’s east side includes or borders with mountainous, brush-covered or forest-covered areas that are at high risk for fire. This restriction applies to discharge of any Class “C” fireworks.

It also applies to campfires or other fires that are only allowed in an approved fire pit designed and installed by the U.S. Forest Service or the city. No homemade or makeshift fire pits are allowed. The restrictions do not apply to residential structures or improved fire pits adjacent to a residential structure.

And those who sell fireworks that would be in violation to the ordinance could have them seized and destroyed, and the person selling or offering them for sale may have their license revoked.

Stone will likely make the same recommendation, or has already made it, to the other cities within the Fire Service Area, including Centerville, North Salt Lake, West Bountiful, Woods Cross, and Davis County.l

A night pedaling under the stars you won’t forget

ake a ride on the dark side at the annual Antelope Island by Moonlight Bike Ride. The event that started in 1994, has become a highly-anticipated experience that continues to attract families and community members.

This year’s ride will be held Friday, July 15 at 10 p.m. with participants traveling from the marine to the historic Fielding Garr Ranch, and back. The Ride into the Moonlight Theme is inspired by the new “Top Gun” movie and riders are asked to wear aviator-based costumes like bomber jackets, goggles and scarfs.

“The Antelope by Moonlight Bike Ride has been one of Davis County’s most popular events for nearly three decades, and for a good purpose,” said Jessica Merrill, director of Discover Davis. “It offers the community a chance to dress up, come together and experience the incredible Antelope Island sky at night.”

Along with the costume contest, there will be awards for the best-decorated bike and best group costume. Be sure to check in before 8 p.m. to be entered into the contests. The Moonlight Bike Ride was created to put the spotlight on Davis County's unique gem, Antelope Island State Park. The tradition returns with Bountiful’s Handcart Days celebration

By Tom Haraldsen | tom.h@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL–After a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a long-time tradition returns this year when Handcart Days takes place July 15 and 16 in Bountiful.

Some new events and old favorites are back, including the popular parade on Bountiful’s Main Street (at a new time), a Friday night concert in the park, plus food and family fun at Bountiful City Park, 400 North 200 West.

“We were involved with the 2019 event, and at that time, no one could have anticipated the pandemic,” said John Lund, who along with his wife Staci is over public relations for the event. “We’ve spent the last several weeks visiting with businesses and others here in Davis County, and certainly there’s a lot of excitement that Handcart Days is back. It’s a tradition for many families in Davis County.”

This year’s events are a week earlier than they’ve been in the past, which Lund said was “so we wouldn’t have to compete with families and their 24th of July plans. We’ve also moved the parade from Friday night to Saturday morning, again to make it easier and more convenient for families so they don’t have to rush home to make it down to a Friday night event. Plus, the temperatures will be cooler in the morning.”

The celebration will start on Friday, July 15, when food booths, games and other ac-

tivities begin at 5 p.m. in the park. At 8 p.m., popular musical group Joshua Creek will perform in concert. The group combines lyrical storytelling with Americana/Country music into what one disc jockey described as “like listening to a Norman Rockwell painting.”

They will perform until about 9 p.m.

The Handcart Days parade will start at 9 a.m. on July 16, with KSL-TV’s and Bountiful resident Mark Eubank as Grand Marshal.

The 1.8 mile parade is one of the state’s largest, with marching bands, dancers, entertainers and colorfully decorated floats created by local church groups. It traditionally draws tens of thousands of spectators, with participation from many cities and organizations along the Wasatch Front.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, activities will resume at Bountiful City Park, with both free and ticketed events for families. There will also be demonstrations of Pioneer Day activities, along with lots of food and drink options.

The day will culminate with the fireworks spectacular at Mueller Park Junior High at 10 p.m.

But Handcart Days doesn’t end there. On Saturday, July 23, there will be three different races for runners, all presented by the South Davis Recreation Center. The Handcart Half

Marathon begins at 6 a.m., the Frontier 5K at 7 a.m. and the Pioneer Pete 1K at 7:45 a.m.

The celebration is in honor of the early Mormon pioneers who crossed the plains to

settle in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The traditional Days of ‘47 Parade in downtown Salt Lake City will be held on Saturday, July 23 this year. Many of the entries in that parade have in the past also participated in the Handcart Days parade. l

FDA approval provides COVID vaccines for children between six months and 5 years old

ith COVID now the fourth leading cause of death for children under the age of one and the fifth leading cause of death for children ages 5 and under, medical professionals believe the approval of a new COVID vaccine for children is a glimmer of hope.

Andrew Pavia, MD, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Utah and director of epidemiology at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital, discussed the new vaccine approved by the FDA in June.

“This is really a big step,” Pavia said. “We’ve had several months now in which there’s been a lot of disease out there and younger children have not had any vaccine availability to provide them protection. It’s caused a lot of heartache for parents.”

The FDA reviewed scientific evidence submitted for vaccines by Moderna, for children ages 6 months to 5 years, and Pfizer-BioNTech, for children ages 6 months to 4 years.

The advisory panel of outside experts unanimously voted for approval of both vaccines for this age group 21-0.

Pavia understands many parents have vaccine hesitancy in regard to COVID. He suggests parents talk with a trusted healthcare provider to get reliable information about the vaccine and how it can help keep their children safe.

“I think you should do it,” he said. “I would vaccinate my grandkids if I had any, but I think it’s really a decision every parent needs to make.”

This age group is the last to be approved for a COVID vaccine, which can now be found at pediatrician offices, pharmacies, Salt Lake County Health Department and other

health departments.

“It’s a myth that children don’t get sick with COVID because they do and it’s been pretty tragic,” he said.

At the beginning of the pandemic, COVID targeted older people, but with the Delta and Omicron variants, the number of children infected is rising. More than 570,000 children under the age of 1 and nearly 2 million between the ages of 1 and 4 have been diagnosed with COVID since March 2020, with the numbers rising significantly since the beginning of the year.

Numbers are expected to spike this fall and winter as kids return to school and daycare, and as new variants appear on the scene.

“With Omicron, it really hit kids hard,” Pavila said.

“During Omicron, 15% of all visits of children to the emergency department were due to COVID. This represented several million emergency department visits…Once Omicron hit, it was actually kids six months to four years old who had the highest hospitalization rates.”

The vaccine is formulated for small children, with Pfizer suggesting three doses to provide optimal protection, and Moderna recommending two, although the company said three would be better. Infants under six months don’t need a vaccine if their mothers were vaccinated during pregnancy.

In that case, the antibodies pass to the baby, offering immunity for the first six months of life.

As with other COVID vaccines, side effects include soreness and redness at the injection site, possible swelling in the lymph nodes, fever and irritability. He said getting

“Talk it over with someone who really knows and that means your provider,” Pavila said. “Not a friend on Facebook, not a Reddit thread, and think it through because it’s important that you make that decision for yourself. However, if you compare it to other things we vaccinate our kids for, the vaccine is at least as safe, based on everything we know to date.”l

Nonprofit arm of Davis School District named overall Best of State

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—The Davis Education Foundation was honored last month with a Best of State medal for Community Communications in the division of Community Development and was then selected as the overall winner from 38 other medalists in the same category. The Foundation works tirelessly to remove barriers to learning for students experiencing homelessness or other economic disadvantages.

“We’re honored and thrilled that our work has been recognized,” said Davis Education Foundation Executive Director Jodi Lunt. “They selected a group of charitable organizations that were making a difference for marginalized, underrepresented populations who are working to move the needle.

The best nonprofits working with youth experiencing homelessness to communicate the reality of students in this silent, pervasive problem in the state teens face. Young people are often invisible.”

In an effort to bring the situation to light the Foundation created the video “Give Hope.” “We wanted to show a day in the life of a teen facing housing insecurity and what they might do,” said Lunt. “Hundreds and hundreds of community organizations used the video as a springboard for service proj-

ects and acted upon it.”

It’s exciting to see that it ignited communities to do incredible work, she said.

“It’s powerful when we work together the impact we can have to give hope tomorrow for a better future and a stronger generation to follow.”

The video has directly assisted in raising more than $2 million for teen centers in the Davis School District. “As we began the process we knew teens needed drop-in resources and wrap around services and asked ‘what does that look like?’” Lunt said. “A teen might not look the same as an adult in homelessness.”

More than 1,200 children in the district are experiencing homelessness, she said. “It is a silent, pervasive problem even in Davis County. We invite the community to engage with us in this cause to provide hope to this very vulnerable population.”

It doesn’t just have to be housing, said Lunt. “There are 14,000 children who are economically disadvantaged or in some kind of insecurity with food, etc. We are trying to address that to help them in reaching their maximum capacity and success.”

Lunt said it was exciting to receive the award. “We’re just ecstatic. We’re humbled

Expansion is underway at St. Olaf Catholic School in Bountiful

S

omething very exciting is happening for the St. Olaf Catholic School in Bountiful, and really for the community as a whole. Ground has been broken and construction underway on a major $3.6 million expansion of the school located at 1793 South Orchard Drive. While much of that monetary total has been collected, there’s still a need for more donations to complete the project.

When completed, the expansion will add a large multipurpose/dining hall, a full commercial kitchen, four middle school classrooms, new restrooms and in a subsequent phase, new administrative offices. It will allow students to have cafeteria services for the first time in the school’s 62 year history. And all of this comes after a couple of stop-starts in a process that’s been discussed for nearly two decades.

“There was some talk about adding on as far back as 2003, but the conversation really took hold in 2008,” said Simon McFall, principal of St. Olaf. “The genesis was that we were looking at the needs of education, and how we could meet the needs of our parish and the broader Bountiful community.”

St. Olaf is a large part of Bountiful’s history, starting with the parish in the

The shape of 1800 South as it comes down the hill to Orchard was created by the church’s property. It is the only Catholic school in Davis County, but its student body comes from a variety of faiths. Forty percent of the students at St. Olaf are not members of the Catholic Church. The parish’s list of activities and participation in city events is well documented.

McFall wasn’t there in 2008, but he knows that year was particularly challenging for the nation’s economy, and talks for expansion were shuttered over the next couple of years and finally “put to bed” in 2011, he said.

“When I arrived in January of 2018, one of the things I was told about was the Capital Campaign that had been halted, and to see if we could do something about it,” he said. “We talked to a lot of parishioners. My predecessors as principal – JoAnn Emery, Casey Pond and Laurie Jacobs – had all done a great job in helping move the work forward, and we just needed to restart the momentum. So I got to be the person who stood on the shoulders of these giants to relaunch the campaign.”

He said St. Olaf was the only school

“It’s 2018, and we can’t cook for our kids, we can’t serve food for our kids, and students have been eating in their classrooms. That was something administrators were focused on back in 2010. So in October 2019, we began soliciting bids and selected a team that winter. In conjunction with our contractors, we decided the launch date for the project would be March 20, 2020.”

And then, on March 13, 2020, the world began to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The school was closed, like all other schools in the state, but organizers decided to march ahead as best they could.

“We were able to do some things that we couldn’t have otherwise except for the interruption in the classrooms,” McFall said. “We actually got about 60 percent more work done in a short period of time than we would have – the value of this prep work was awesome. We were closed from March to May, but we finished all of our ground work – about $1 million of site improvements – by July 2020.”

Students also returned after two months of closure, and the school’s enrollment has continued to climb. As the school reopened, so did the Capital Campaign, which has been helped by “some great donors,” McFall said. “The city and community have been very supportive, as has the Bountiful Interfaith Council. They’ve

been a great help as we continue our fundraising efforts for the expansion.”

“I’m very excited,” said St. Olaf Catholic Church Pastor, the Rev. Andrzej Skryzpiec, who goes by Father Andrew to everyone in the community. “The school gives such vitality to the parish, as well as the opportunity for the community to come together – people of all faiths. Yes, we promote our Catholic faith but we aren’t coercing anyone to become a Catholic. We share the values that many in the community share, and it’s a great opportunity to grow.”

“We hope the residents in Bountiful and throughout Davis County realize the importance and the value of St. Olaf School,” said Ron Burt, a leader of Bountiful Interfaith Council, which includes St. Olaf, Flourish Grace Church, The First Baptist Church, The Bridge Community, Episcopal Church of the Resurrection and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “We’re encouraging everyone to donate and help St. Olaf in this great cause.”

Catalyst Center sees change in leadership

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com KAYSVILLE—Come fall, there will be some new faces at the Davis Catalyst Center and the CTE (Career and Technical Education) administration in the Davis School District.

Brian Hunt will move from his position as principal at the Catalyst Center to CTE (Career and Technical Education) Director and Tyler Poll switches from principal at North Davis Junior High to take Hunt’s place.

“I’ve been working as the administrator at the Catalyst since it opened in January,” said Hunt, who has been with the district for 20 years. “The Catalyst is a remarkable place.

A few years ago (Superintendent) Reid Newey said he’d like to have a CTE center where students could do capstone projects. Jay Welk (retiring CTE Director) went across the country to see what others were doing.”

The district bought the building in Kaysville, gutted it and renovated it, he said. “We asked the CTE instructors what programs they’d like to see and what it is students want to do to support local businesses.”

Every student is required to take one credit of CTE electives, said Hunt. “Most schools offer classes like automotive, business and marketing, etc. They can take a series of courses in an area then shift to the Catalyst if they choose to do a capstone project.”

“We see ourselves as a feeder of CTE,” said Poll, who has been with the district for 12 years. “The goal is to help students figure out what they’re interested in and leave with the credentials in that field to move on.”

AP computer science students come through to see the Catalyst in the eighth grade, he said. “We have amazing CTE instructors so if a student chooses to do a capstone project

they’d be prepared for that.”

Some kids who are not doing well in their classes come to the Catalyst and it becomes an incentive to do better in high school, said Poll. “Even students who are 4.0 academically come here. There’s a wide spectrum.”

Seeing students develop professional skills and problem solving is rewarding, said Hunt. “They’re learning to get along with others and communicate. Before they wouldn’t look them in the eye or know how to talk to an adult. It helps them get better at it.”

Kids are handed a phone number and told to call someone, he said. “They say ‘I have to call?’ Yes, this is your project.”

When they stretch they grow, Hunt said. “We’re really trying to be a catalyst for them. We’re promoting a significant change in students’ technical skills but also developing the best professional skills.”

Most of the classes at the Catalyst are concurrent enrollment, he said. “They also earn college credit so it’s like a scholarship where they can save $1,000. But we also partner with industry, that's what makes us unique.”

“We’re adding construction management next year,” said Poll. “Kids will build a tiny home. It gives them experience in plumbing, electrical and everything that goes into a home.”

“We want them to still stay connected with their home high school,” said Hunt. “Most of the programs have prerequisites before they come here. There are introductory classes they can take at their school.”

in demand,” said Poll. “We’ve had to turn kids away.”

Poll said they have worked hard with industry on what students need to be employed. “We have 53 industry partners. They give them real live projects to work on that will go to market. It’s a way for students to collaborate with each other and work hand in hand with business partners. We’re building the next level of professionals.” l

Woods Cross City Councilmember Wally Larrabee educates the community about suicide

A

s a leading cause of death in Utah, and across the country, suicide is more than a tragedy – it’s a major health problem affecting people of all ages. But with a high suicide rate, senior citizens are one of the most vulnerable populations.

While seniors make up 12% of the population, they account for almost 18% of suicides, and those numbers are growing. One in four seniors will succeed in committing suicide, compared to one in 200 youth attempts. Men over 75 comprise the highest demographic for suicide.

“We’re very, very concerned about our senior citizens,” said Wally Larrabee, Woods Cross city councilmember. “They are the fastest-growing group of suicides, much, much quicker than our youth. It’s so sad because quite often those tragedies aren’t as well known.”

Several factors contribute to senior suicide attempts. They might be living longer, without high-quality health. They might not have the financial resources to carry them through the rest of their lives. They might fear being a burden to families or they don’t feel useful to the community.

Some warning signs for seniors might be losing interest in hobbies, isolating themselves, feeling worthless or hopeless, not eating or drinking enough and talking about giving away belongings.

“If you have any kind of hint that someone is struggling, don’t wait. Ask the question,” Larrabee said.

As a certified QPR instructor for suicide prevention, Larrabee educates adult and youth groups about identifying people who might be at risk and helps people have difficult discussions.

He knows talking about suicide is uncomfortable, but the alternative can be deadly.

The QPR program breaks the conversation into three parts: Question, Persuade and Refer. The first step can be the most difficult, once you recognize someone you love may be in a dangerous situation and thinking of ending their life.

“If you suspect that someone around you is having a suicidal crisis, it’s vital that the question be asked. If you feel you don’t have the courage, you need to find someone who will be willing to ask that tough question,” Larrabee said.

Ask the person if they’re considering suicide, and give the individual time to respond. Don’t rush to judgment. Just listen and be persistent. If the person denies there’s a problem, let them know there are resources and support, that suicide is a permanent solution to a problem that is probably temporary, and there are resources to help manage those problems.

The second step is persuading a person that their life is worth living. This might involve taking a loved one to counseling or getting them to call the national crisis suicide hotline, which is open 24 hours a day. Most people don’t realize the

number of resources available to overcome the crisis.

The third step is to refer people to those resources and get them to someone who can help navigate the situation.

“Quite often, individuals who go through a suicidal crisis and get the help they need at the time of that crisis, many times are not suicidal again,” he said. “It brings them back from the brink and helps them focus and helps them realize they are a valued individual and important to their community and family and those that care about them.”

With children and teens, parents need to have the conversation, especially if signs indicate growing depression or sadness.

“The best thing a parent can do is to ensure that in their home their kids can talk to them about anything,” he said. “What kids face are so many dangers, there are so many things they can be up against and if they don’t feel they can talk to their parents about it, that’s where a problem can begin.”

It can be scary to ask kids what challenges they face and

what keeps them up at night, but having the conversation on a regular basis helps break the ice and opens dialogue. Larrabee suggests leaving the conversation with the feeling that you’re open to any discussion at any time, and there will be no judgment or punishment.

“When kids truly believe that, that’s a huge step in combating suicide among our youth,” he said.

In schools, Hope Squads are available for struggling students. The members are trained in QPR and know how to recognize red flags. Parents can also subscribe to the SafeUT app which provides access to resources that can reach out and intervene in a crisis situation. Experts agree that ensuring water flows to Great Salt Lake and its wetlands over the long term is the single most important strategy to prevent further drying of the lake. With the ongoing drought and water supply pressures, lasting solutions will take time and require concerted action. Along with water policy changes made over the last few years, water conservation efforts and funding in 2022, the new trust will help advance projects and voluntary transactions to retain or enhance

water flows to the lake and improve or preserve wetlands and important hydrologic connections.

Barnes said that as part of the grant decision-making process, FFSL worked with the Utah Division of Water Quality and the Great Salt Lake Advisory Council. Over the next few weeks and months, FFSL will be working with Audubon and TNC to develop agreements to establish the trust, launch outreach to partners and begin implementing program goals. l

Water restrictions easing up a bit in Bountiful

or Bountiful residents who’ve been diligent in minding the city’s restrictions on watering this summer, some good news. City Council has revised those restrictions and will now allow watering two days a week – up from the one day earlier this year.

Kraig Christensen of the Bountiful City Water Department told council that an increase in precipitation the past two months in Northern Utah allowed the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District to revise its reduction in irrigation water allocations from 60 to 40 percent. These revisions affect only those Bountiful residents who receive irrigation water from Bountiful Irrigation (which is not part of Bountiful City) and the South Davis Water District.

“As we’ve monitored the city’s resources, I’m confident that our water levels are good for fire suppression, so I’m supportive of this move,” he said.

In April, the council enacted a resolution implementing restrictions to the use of culinary water for irrigation or other purposes not related to consumption by humans. Poor snowpack and another unusually dry winter has made Utah’s drought its most severe in recent history. Among those restrictions was allowing culinary watering of lawns and gardens only once a week. That has now been increased to twice a week, with guidelines still in place until April 15, 2023 un-

less otherwise amended.

Still in place are the following restrictions: – Use of culinary water for outdoor watering is prohibited where irrigation water is provided by a third-party service district.

– Outdoor watering with culinary water is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

– Outdoor use of culinary water is not permitted on Wednesday of any week.

– Zone run times shall be for no longer than 20 minutes per zone for pop-up style sprinkler heads or 40 minutes (per zone) for rotary style sprinkler heads.

– Hand watering is allowed once per week, with maximum flow rates of 5 gallons per minute, for established trees and shrubs.

– Rinsing or washing of sidewalks, driveways, patios or other impervious surfaces is not permitted.

– Residential swimming pools may only be filled using a hose connection to the primary structure with a maximum flow rate of 5 gallons per minute.

The city will spot water parts of parks and city facilities to prevent permanent damage to turf or landscaping. Tee boxes, greens and fairways at Bountiful Ridge Golf Course will be monitored and watered as needed, including spot watering to prevent permanent damage.l

Explorer Corps program offers summer fun and challenges

O

nce again this year, the Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) invites Utahns and visitors to test their Utah knowledge and get off the beaten path. Explorer Corps employs a digital smartphone app and a physical passport to direct users to a distinct physical marker placed in each of Utah’s 29 counties. All summer long, participants are invited to seek out these markers and follow their own path to see what makes each county – and all of Utah – so special.

“On top of everyone’s to-do list this summer is getting outside to enjoy Utah – the best state for outdoor recreation. I can think of no better way to do that than by searching for all 29 county markers,” said NHMU’s executive director Jason Cryan.

“The museum’s Explorer Corps has been designed to blur the line between an educational experience and outdoor adventure and we are grateful for all our partners – and explorers – who continue to bring it to life.”

Designed to celebrate Utah’s diverse natural history throughout the state, Explorer Corps offers drive-by sightseeing, easy parkand-walk overlooks, a bit of off-roading and hiking, and some idyllic summer recreation spots to enjoy. Most markers will likely take explorers to places they’ve never been before, creating lasting memories and many chances to learn something new along the way. Anne Shaw, one of nearly two dozen

of last summer’s participants who made it to all 29 county markers, certainly thought so.

“My husband and I are both lifelong Utahns, and thought we’d seen pretty much all there is to see,” Anne said. “Boy we were wrong! After the first couple of weekend trips to find markers, we were hooked. The drives were beautiful, the markers were just hard enough to find, and we learned something and made a fun memory in each new place. It was a great bonding experience for us.”

911 project remembers the events of that day in September 2001

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—As the 21st anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the Major Brent Taylor Foundation is bringing Davis Remembers – the 911 project to Davis County to commemorate the events surrounding the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 and how the tragedy caused Americans to pull together in a common cause to do something more for each other and the country. They did a similar project in Weber County last year.

“It’s based around the 9/11 response,” said Johnny Ferry, co chair with Jennie Taylor whose husband Brent Taylor was killed in Afghanistan. “If you ask anyone old enough where they were on 911 they remember, it was so impactful.

It’s what we felt after 911. We wanted to serve, give blood, do something charitable.”

It was the 20th anniversary last year, he said. “Jennie and my wife served on the PTA together so she knew who I was. We talked about doing something bigger for the 20th year. We wanted to make something special so we conceived the idea of a walk-through exhibit.”

Ferry said they didn’t have any broken pieces from the towers but thought they could use pictures and videos to build something professional like the museums in New York. “We reached out to New York and other groups and the Smithsonian had things I could utilize. We looked to see if others were doing it and nobody was. We thought maybe we’d touched on something.”

The project features an indoor memorial walk-thru media display of the events of 9/11 and subsequent War on Terror responses. An indoor community gathering center with walk-up booths to meet police, fire, military, medical

and first responders. There will be historical, Americana artifacts, collections and charities, community service activists and a parking lot Touch-a-Truck event, said Ferry.

“There will be imaging from local communities that takes you back to before 9/11 and after 9/11,” he said. “What the response was and how it changed. Go Utah is giving us Utah imaging at the time. It will be a historical journey. At any type of these events we have to be sensitive to the community and respect them. The goal is to create an environment you can walk through with your kids.”

There will be 20 TVs with visual displays, said Ferry.

“With four large format documentary rooms where visitors can watch the events of 9/11. When they come out of the museum there will be 60 community booths and two halls where they can walk up and interact with activists from the community like police and the Red Cross. They can try on fire gear and meet members of the military and show appreciation for what they do.”

The exhibit will be held in the Legacy Events Center.

“Commissioner Bob Stevenson arranged for the facility and made it happen,” Ferry said. “Last year (in Ogden) on opening night it pulled in members of Davis County. Sen. Stuart Adams came through and came back again. He said he wanted to find a way to get this out for the whole state to see.”

The Major Brent Taylor Foundation is sponsoring it all, said Ferry. “It’s all volunteers. It’s a way to activate the community. It embodies what Brent Taylor meant to us here.”

The project is meant to remember 9/11, he said. “To remind us of what it felt like on 9/12, the smoke, the digging out. Some people enlisted to fight terror. There was so much

emotion and sense of community that caused people to thank their neighbor and give their kids a hug. It’s a bigger thing than all of us.”

Davis Remembers – the 911 project will be held Sept. 7 – Sept. 10 at the Legacy Events Center, 151 S. 1100 West in Farmington from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday for schools and 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. each day through Saturday for the public. l

Viewmont High wrestlers named All Americans after national tournament in Virginia

By Alec Cipollini | a.cipollini@mycityjournals.com CENTERVILLE—Even though they didn’t take home the championship in both of their weight classes, Viewmont High School junior wrestlers and twin brothers Marcus and Moses Espinoza Owens were deemed All-Americans after their semi-final performances in the National High School Coaches Association’s National Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia in late March.

The competition was an after-school tournament where the best wrestlers from across the United States battled it out to see who would be crowned the winner of the 14 weight divisions ranging from 106 pounds to 285 pounds for freshmen through seniors.

The brothers, alongside their club teammates at Sanderson Wrestling Academy, located in Farmington, went to Virginia to see how far they could go against elite opposition.

“It is really fun since we have been going to the tournament every year since we were freshman,” Moses said. “Wrestling against the top guys is always fun and we both trained really hard for it, so we were ready going into it.”

Moses won his quarterfinal match 7-1 against Patrick Jackson of Bolivar, West Virginia, before losing to Luke Barker from Dodge City, Kansas 8-5 in the semis and had a record of 7-2 overall in the tournament.

As for Marcus, he went 6-1 in the tournament as he won 6-3 against Raphael Knapp from Northborough, Massachusetts and eventually lost in the semi-finals to Ashburn, Virginia native Raphael Hipolito 12-9.

Marcus finished third out of 100 high school wrestlers in the 160-pound division of the tournament while Moses came in fifth out of 100 in the 152-pound division.

When talking about being named All-Americans for their efforts at the tournament and also being crowned state champions at Viewmont High this past school year, Marcus said that he liked the recognition, but still wanted to win the whole thing.

“I thought it was pretty cool,” Marcus said. “But I thought I could win it. I wouldn’t say I was disappointed because I was happy with what I did, but I expected more out of myself since I really wanted to win.”

The competitive mindset that Marcus has made him believe he was the better wrestler throughout the competition.

“I think I am better,” Marcus said. “It's just like, I can’t chill and sit back to wait for them, I just have to fight them. I should have gone out there and got points instead of trying to coast.”

After making the trip back to Utah, their family, friends, teammates and coaches were all excited and proud of the twins as they showcased their skills against other elite wrestlers on the national stage.

“They were really excited for us and proud of us which was really cool,” Moses said. “We were super appreciative of it.

One of my friends gave me a poster that said that I didn’t have to cut weight anymore and gave me candy since I could have eaten whatever I wanted.”

Both twins are heading into their final year at Viewmont High as they will be seniors coming up this fall, and both look forward to finishing out their high school careers before going off to college.

Multiple highly-regarded colleges have reached out to the twins including Stanford, South Dakota State, Princeton, Campbell, California Polytechnic State and Utah Valley University.

Right now, however, Viewmont High School’s last day of this school year was on May 27 and after that, the twins planned on training before heading up to Fargo, North Dakota to compete in the Fargo Junior Nationals freestyle tournament at the end of summer in July.

“I want to go back to the tournament next year in Virginia and win, but I want to also win the Fargo tournament at the end of the summer,” Marcus said. “We are training a lot since that tournament is something we want to win as well.” l

I

t was the height of COVID. We were trying to figure out Zoom meetings and DoorDash and online grocery shopping. I’d been laid off. The world was topsy-turvy.

Stress levels were off the charts.

My husband decided we weren’t fighting enough, so he thought he’d teach me to golf.

I was young and naive and thought it would give us a break from the COVID lockdowns and Netflix binging. But two years later, it’s become the most infuriating part of my life. A sport with an uppity dress code should have been the first clue.

We got to the golf arena and rented a cart, which is really the only reason to golf.

Tom gave me the scorecard like I understood “par” or colors or numbers. We drove to the starting line and he proceeded to give me my first golf lesson.

“What club are you going to use?” he asked.

“How should I know? Sandwich?

Soda? Strip?”

Tom swore, handed me a club and instructed, “Widen your stance, get closer to the ball, shoulders up, head down, knees together, thumbs out, straighten the arms but bend the elbows. Twist, but don’t move your hips. Watch the ball. Watch the ball!”

After getting me in peak form, I took a swing. I totally missed the ball and sprained

several unused muscles in my back.

“You’re pulling up,” he said, unhelpfully.

“Pulling up what?”

“Just pulling up.”

“I don’t understand the words you’re using,” I replied. I considered throwing a ball at his head.

“You know, just don’t pull up.”

I glanced around the course, certain a divorce lawyer had to be within range.

“Watch,” he said. “This is what you’re doing.”

Tom then proceeded to reenact my swing, which, according to him, looks like I’m trying to kill a spider with a baseball bat.

“Don’t do that,” he said. “Understand?”

“Do you understand alimony?” I mumbled.

It’s gone downhill from there, but at least now I’ve learned golf etiquette, like how driving the cart through those fun sand dunes is frowned upon. And I should whisper on the golf field unless I miss a shot, and then I’m supposed to yell a swear word and throw my golf bat in the lake.

I also learned I shouldn’t shout “Fore!” every time I take a swing, and kicking the ball onto the fairway is a cool golf-pro trick. And the drink cart is like an ice-cream truck for grown-ups.

After watching Tom’s conniption when he hit a ball into the creek, I asked him, “You do this to relax? Is it working?”

He gritted his teeth and drove to the next hole. I sat back and watched the beautiful scenery. I’ve seen deer, squirrels, ducks and bunnies romping near the “greens,” which is a lazy name if I’ve ever heard one.

Maybe during the next pandemic, Tom can teach me how to pole vault or we could join a curling team or maybe we could do a DIY extension to our house. There are just so many ways to start a fight.
