Veterans serve to protect the freedoms Americans enjoy

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—Veterans Day is a time to remember those who have served or are serving in the military to protect the freedoms Americans enjoy. Not only do they serve but so do their families back home as they often spend several months or even longer away from them.

“He hasn’t been deployed but he had to have his bags packed just in case,” said Jenna Harker about her husband Jon. “That’s just kind of the game.”

Jon has been in the Army reserves since 2008, she said. “He’s a Medic E-5 and working on becoming an E-6. We got married in 2014 and have a 6-year-old daughter.”

Harker said Jon speaks fluent Spanish so he goes on humanitarian missions to other countries to translate and check on people’s health. “He was in El Salvador for a month or so.”

He was active for almost a year and stationed in El Paso, Texas, said Harker. “It was the longest time we’d been a part. Our daughter is used to it. She knows that dad has two jobs and on the weekend he does drills and flies somewhere for the military.”

“I joined in 2008 mostly because I didn’t like my job and I needed a change,” said Jon. “I was 24, so a little older. I was smart enough to know what I was getting into. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

There’s always the fear of being deployed and gone for a year, he said. “Or worse, getting killed when you’re married and have a family. It’s hard, your husband or wife gets pulled into it. They Please see VETERANS: pg. 2

NEWS BREAK Wisconsin man convicted of killing six with an SUV in Christmas parade A Wisconsin man was convicted Wednesday of killing six people when he drove his SUV through a Christmas parade last year, ending a trial in which he defended himself erratically and sometimes confrontationally. The jury found Darrell Brooks guilty of six counts of first-degree intentional homicide.

He faces a mandatory life sentence on each count.

Retired U.S. Army Col. Kathleen H. Switzer has experienced both sides as a military wife and as a service member herself. Two out of her three children are also in the military. “We’re quite a military family,” she said. “I’ve had a conventional private life but my work life has been non conventional.”

There weren’t a lot of opportunities for women in the military year ago, said Switzer. “When I was in high school I had aunts who were in the nursing Army Corps in WWII. I thought I would join the nursing core. I also wanted to be a lawyer but in the 1950s that was not an option for me.”

Switzer married a military man and she became a military wife. “For the first 40 years of my life I moved all over the next 40 years I lived in Bountiful.”

She worked as a civilian nurse as her children got older, said Switzer. “I was able to return to the plans I had 15 years earlier. In 1979 they started opening up for women to serve in the military.”

Switzer went into the nursing Army reserves. “My children were raised,” she

said. “I decided against active duty so I joined the reserves at Fort Douglas. I was deployed to the Persian Gulf from 19901991. My husband sent me off just like I sent him off.”

In the meantime, Switzer had finished law school. “I was a dual lawyer and nurse,” she said. “I was stationed in Germany. I was part of the active duty contingency plan for receiving a high level of casualties. Fortunately there were not nearly as many as what we expected but it became the model with plans in place to accomplish those things.”

It was an intense experience in Germany, said Switzer. “It gave me an appreciation for the kinds of people who serve in the military.”

When Switzer came back she retired as a Colonel. “I was the first woman commander of a brigade training medics and LPNs.” Pete Sarris grew up living in Centerville and Bountiful and served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm from 1989-1991.

“I’ve wanted to be a Marine since I was 8 years old,” said Sarris. “So I joined the Marine Corp and was deployed overseas to Asia, Japan, the Philippines, Tokyo and more.”

Sarris said in 1990 when the war broke out he was one of the first ones

to go to Saudi Arabia. “It was quite an experience. Preparing for war is just about as big a rush as being in war. We created a lot of diversions for what we were doing.”

When he did get deployed, Sarris was part of the 1-9 Walking Dead. “That was only done in wartime,” he said. “They were some of the craziest people but they were good at what they did. I was good at what I did. I was used to being around hot situations.”

He was also one of the first ones to liberate the Kuwait airport and Kuwait city. “They were happy to see us.”

Sarris said he came home with some PTSD issues so he’s focused on helping other veterans. “I take vets sailing. We’ve sailed by the Statue of Liberty and done some pretty crazy stuff. It’s saved my life volunteering my time.”

Jenna Harker said it’s hard to see the divisiveness in the country. “People are against the military but when we’re going to war it’s a whole different story. They say ‘where’s our military?’ They should support them and realize they’re there to help to make our country safe. They join to do good for the country. It’s hard for sure.” l

Small businesses drive Utah’s economy

N

ovember is National Entrepreneurship Month, a time to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that powers Utah’s economy.

Nowhere is entrepreneurship stronger than in Utah’s small businesses, which make up 99% of businesses in Beehive State. Of these small businesses, nearly 98% are very small, with fewer than 20 employees.

Despite their size, small businesses have a big impact on the state’s economy. They employ nearly half of the state’s workforce, and an even larger share of workers in rural communities.

which surpassed every state but Idaho.

From Feb 2020 to July 2022, Utah had 6.2% employment growth, compared to 0.02% nationally.

This job growth was generated largely by small business. During the first year of the pandemic, small businesses added 29,432 net jobs to the state’s economy. And from March 2020 and March 2021, small businesses accounted for 6,003 out of 6,589 net new business openings.

Thanks to enterprising small businesses, most industries have added jobs over the last year, with only two of 11 sectors losing jobs. Utah’s 2.1% employment rate remains among the lowest in the nation.

issues as their counterparts in other states, they are uniquely benefiting from strong in-migration. Last year the state saw its highest net migration since 2005, with an influx of 35,000 new residents – roughly the population of Tooele.

Additionally, Utah is outperforming the rest of the nation in bringing people who quit their jobs during the pandemic back into the labor force. The Beehive State’s labor force participation rate is 68.1%, compared to 62.1% nationally.

Busy Bountiful Bees are hiding along Main

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—Something is a buzz on Main Street in Bountiful. Hidden in a variety of places, the savvy hunter can find six bronze bees depicting activities going on in the city. Find all six and there’s a prize in store.

“Angela Pitt came up with the idea a couple of years ago,” said Rebecca Hatch, Community Affairs Specialist of the Public Art Program. “The city manager and council wanted some interactive art that would

cater to children. She’d seen other cities do it and came up with the idea of bees. When I came on it was their goal to have the bees come to reality.”

The public art advisory board and volunteers from the community brought ideas before the city for approval, she said.

“They commissioned local sculptor artist Mike Lee to come up with some designs and cast six bees in bronze. The city gave him the freedom to make up the designs and get them approved a few at a time. He was involved in many aspects of the design and poses and finally came to these bees.”

They came up with the Bountiful Bees on Main, said Hatch. “It’s how busy Bountiful Bees come together and work together.

We also want to educate everyone about the background of bees and how to take care of them. There are a lot of beekeepers here.”

The city gave Lee a list of activities that had to do with Bountiful and Utah, she said. “We weren’t aiming it at businesses that just happened to be what it landed on.”

The bees depict activities residents can relate to, Hatch said. “There’s a soccer bee, a bee eating ice cream, one that is shopping, another playing the guitar, a gardening one

and one that is reading.”

Each bee is six inches tall and hidden along Main Street, she said. “There are clues on our web page or a QR code to help find the bees. Once you find all the bees you take a picture of all of them and go to the BDAC to get a bee sticker and a bee reward.”

Hatch said they invite families to walk Main Street. “It’s the best way to search for them and at the same time spend time with your family.”

The bees were unveiled on Oct. 27 and are just waiting to be found.l

Spectrum Academy breaks ground on new state-of-the-art facility

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com NORTH SALT LAKE—Spectrum Academy, a charter school serving students on the autism spectrum, broke ground on a new state-of-the-art STARS (Spectrum Transition and Academic Resource School) building in North Salt Lake that is specially designed for higher needs students. The eighth building between the two campuses in North Salt Lake and Pleasant Grove will expand from 80 students to 170 students kindergarten through age 22.

“The new building will have a lot more facilities,” said Brad Nelson, Spectrum Academy Director of Development.

“We’ll have occupational therapists, sensory rooms, speech therapists and applied behavior. All specifically designed for their needs.”

The 30,000 square foot building is like the one at the Pleasant Grove campus that was completed in 2021. “It’s the same type of building as in Pleasant Grove but that one is a little smaller,” said Nelson. “It will be built on the current playing field of the high school on the south east corner. We secured a piece of land long term and we’ll put a new playing field there. It’s directly to

the south of the building.”

The new building is projected to be completed by August 2023. “We’re also working on a satellite campus in St. George.”

This facility will allow closer interaction with students that attend in the other building, he said. “That way we’re not constantly transporting students that take some classes there. This brings them all closer together.”

Utah is second in the autism prevalence rate in the nation, Nelson said. “We try to incorporate the educational support tools they need. We have small class sizes of 12-15 students and a teacher and a teacher’s aide in each class. It’s extremely low so teachers can concentrate on the individual students.”

Students with IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) can get most of their needs taken care of in a semi-typical environment, he said. “There will be more intensive care students in this building.”

Spectrum Academy is a tuition free public charter school, said Nelson. “When it received its charter we could provide education at no cost. “North Salt Lake has a total of 830 students and Pleasant Grove has 720.

building will help with some of the need.”

The school has gone from 150 students to over 1,600 in both schools in the last nine years, he said. “We’ve seen rapid growth.

We were Utah’s first charter school devoted to these special students and because of the great need here in Utah, we are always pursuing ways to expand and grow our services to meet the high demand.”

With one in every 47 Utah children diagnosed on the autism spectrum, Spectrum Academy Charter school moves beyond autism awareness and into action with its customized education approach, Nelson said. “Spectrum Academy specializes in giving students with autism and other developmental delays tools for life.” l

Speakers and performers invited to take part in TEDxBountiful BOUNTIFUL—TEDxBountiful is back and organizers are looking for speakers and performers for the event to be held Feb. 4, 2023. The inaugural TEDxBountiful was held in February of 2020 and was very successful.

“We’re excited to be able to offer another TEDxBountiful event this year,” said Beverly Ward, one of the organizers.

The theme is “Think Again!” The application deadline is Nov. 4, 2022. A form is online at TEDxBountiful.com where applicants can submit their ideas. If they

Mental health leaders work to end the stigma around mental illness and substance use disorders

G

ary Mendell was devastated when his 25-year-old son took his own life. Brian Mendell had struggled with substance misuse for a decade but hadn’t used drugs or alcohol for more than a year at the time of his death.

But it wasn’t just the struggle of addiction that finally broke him. It was the stigma and shame Brian felt, and the constant feeling of being measured and coming up short.

“The history on his computer showed he woke up that morning and researched suicide notes, he wrote a note of his own, then he took his own life,” Mendell said.

On World Mental Health Day (Oct. 10), Mendell, the founder and CEO of Shatterproof, took part in an unprecedented gathering at Snowbird Ski Resort that included 175 individuals and 135 organizations.

In conjunction with the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, these experts launched a 10-year campaign to tackle the issue of shame, stigma and prejudice associated with diseases of the brain, mental health and substance disorders.

The three-day Stop Stigma Together Summit created and amplified non-shaming messaging surrounding mental illness to help the millions of people dealing with these issues and their families.

In the United States, 20% of adults experience mental illness each year. Substance abuse disorder affects more than 20 million Americans over the age of 12.

Additionally, 9.5 million adults struggle with both. Stigma often prevents individuals from seeking the help they need.

The goal of the campaign is to transform the treatment system for brain diseases, educate and empower families, and end the shame.

“Until stigma is eliminated, people with mental illness and substance use disorders and their families will continue to needlessly suffer,” said Kristin Kroeger, chief of programs, policy and partnerships for the American Psychiatric Association.

“The movement we launch today unites us all. Together we can do much more than any one person and any one organization alone. Let’s work to change the narrative around mental health.”

ple don’t get the care they need because of the shame attached to the situation.

Jared Skillings is the chief of professional practice at the American Psychological Association, an organization representing more than 130,000 psychologists across the country. He said the country is in the trenches of a mental health crisis but feels a system of integrated care that incorporates all aspects of a person’s physical, mental and emotional life is the best way to help with recovery.

“During the pandemic and over the last few years there have been a number of ways that we have seen stigma improve and we’re incredibly grateful for that,” Skillings said.

Part of the campaign targets how mental health is discussed in the media.

Teaching journalists to do accurate solutions-based reporting can help decrease stigma, leading to common ground public discourse, and potential public policy changes that minimizes discrimination.

Earlier diagnosis will also help the 1 in 3 teens and young adults who struggle with mental illness each year. While symptoms often appear around age 14, most diagnoses aren’t made until 10 years later, or more.

“We look forward to every school having a comprehensive approach to mental health, a plan that’s resourced and enables students to know it’s okay to not be okay and to know where to seek help,” said John MacPhee, CEO of the Jed Foundation.

Experts at the event said offering support to families is a way to normalize the situation that so many Americans are facing. By working with community groups, churches, schools and other institutions, families can have a lifeboat when times feel bleak.

Janet Lindow is the executive director of Rural Behavioral Health Institute, based in Montana, a state with historically high suicide rates across all age groups and demographics. It is her mission to identify youth experiencing risk factors for suicide and connecting them with care.

“We want to normalize the fact that, at some point in our lives, all of us will have some sort of depression or anxiety symptoms and it is okay to ask for help, and to know where that help can be found,” Lindow said. l

1922

A man notices, first a woman’s face, second her skirt, third her shoes and four her hands.

He rarely sees her hat, but probably feels it. He gets the effect of it unconsciously.

Mentally, a man is first conscious of a woman’s eyes, second her voice. Beyond these two lists curiosity doesn’t go. But if her voice shows too much of the clever or the intellectual he begins to block off, and then probes her eyes to see whether they belie her voice not.

A woman’s eyes often do this same thing. Her voice may say, “I am very highbrow.” While her eyes are saying, “Don’t you believe it!” This is the way, all over the world, men are judging women and have always judged them. But it is a great secret. Nobody knows it but a very few people who have solemnly agreed never to divulge it. It is so universal among all men that they are quite unconscious about it. It is here published for the first time, thus violating tradition and custom, which declare that what everybody knows should never be revealed.

1932

How big do hailstones grow? To answer this frequently asked question the U.S. Weather Bureau has listed some of the historic hail storms of the past. In 1817 hailstones that measured 1-4 inches in circumference were said to have fallen in South Wales. Others weighing four and a half pounds were reported after a storm at Cazoria, Spain, in June 1829.

1942

A number of south Davis county towns “get out the scrap” this week, according to reports issued by David A. Thurgood, county salvage chairman and his able sub-chairmen located throughout the county. Hubert C. Burton, county school superintendent of schools and heading the school drive for scrap, is making a good showing with the energetic students of the county schools. Huge piles of valuable scrap metals rise on school grounds in the entire district. On special drive days students are excused from classes to aid in gathering up the collections placed on curbs and highways, which have been salvaged by patriotic residents of the county.

1952

It might fool you unless Utahns exercise care at the polls next Tuesday, they may be voting exactly opposite to the way they intend to vote on the Old-Age Lein Law repeal question.

In Davis county the ballot calls for “Yes” and “No” votes. A vote “Yes” would be the same as “For”–favoring repeal of the law. A vote “No” would be the same as “against”– opposing repeal of the law by those who want the present law continued. Citizens favoring the present law must vote no (against) repeal to retain the law. The present lien law has been on the books since 1947. It permits the state to recover a portion of its old-age assistance payments from the estates of recipients after they die.

1962

Though Halloween is on Oct. 31, Bountiful residents are asked to have their porch lights on during the evening of Oct. 30. That is because the little UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) representatives dressed as Halloween spooks will be “trick or treating” on behalf of the less fortunate children in the under-developed parts of the world. These special goblins can be identified by the milk carton they carry which has a bonafide UNICEF tape across the top of it.

The “goblins” who will be asking for your small donations, are learning a practical lesson in sharing, said Mrs. Vern Strand, chairman of the UNICEF drive in this country as she expressed hope that ev-

eryone would welcome the children when they call.

1972

Check a few basics on his costume before he leaves the house. Can he see?

Face masks often have tiny eye slits which restrict peripheral vision. The danger is not only from automobiles on the street but even from such obvious dangers as porch steps, rough sidewalks, tree roots and other obstacles. Which would not pose a threat if the younger’s vision were not restricted. Can he walk?

Long skirts, restricting costumes, trailing traits might tangle little feet and a bad spill could result.

Can he move his arms freely? Not only does he need full use of his hands to carry that loaded bag of goodies, but he needs to be able to catch himself if he stumbles or trips in the dark Halloween night.

Is there anything sharp and potentially dangerous in the costume itself? If he were to fall off the porch for example, will he be injured by any part of his costume?

1982

Val Verda – After nearly two years of concentrated effort, and many other years of activity that has been off and on, Val Verda residents were asked to “hear out” the new master plan that could see adoption by year’s end.

The crowd at South Davis Junior High School Thursday night was appraised of efforts that have included untold hours by the seven member Val Verda Advisory Council and input provided by many others in the community through formal surveys and otherwise. Here’s a breakdown of what was presented, given to seven groups representing each area, by categories of residential commercial and industrial parks and open space, annexation, transportation, and public facilities. To maintain or improve existing residential quality, enforcement or existing ordinances for permitted uses, off-street parking and home occupations would be asked, curb and gutter and sidewalks established on all streets and multi-family housing zones built along Orchard Drive and U.S. Highway 89.

As well as in the existing R-3 zone near 4200 South and the R-2 zone near 625 West. A maximum of four dwelling units per building in any zone is also advised.

Commercial and Industrial – No new intensive commercial uses should be allowed and less intensive uses should be allowed near existing commercial areas. Parks and Open Space – At least one large community park is asked, with a site east of Orchard Drive having good accessibility urged. Annexation – Due to state law, it is assumed annexation will either eventually take the entire area or it would have to be incorporated. Public Facilities – To improve fire response time, area fire rating and resulting insurance premiums, Bountiful and North Salt Lake should join the South Davis Fire district, a fire sub-station should be built and “911” emergency number service implemented.

F-35A crashes at Hill Air Force Base, pilot ejects HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah— An F-35A Lightning II from the 388th Fighter Wing crashed last week at the north end of the runway at Hill Air Force Base. On and off-base emergency crews responded immediately. The pilot ejected from the aircraft and was taken to a local hospital for observation and was treated and released.

The crash happened just after 6 p.m. Oct. 19. It caused an 8-10 acre brush fire that was contained by fire crews from Hill AFB and the surrounding communities, authorities said.

“Right now, we’re very thankful there were no serious injuries,” said Col. Craig Andrle, 388th Fighter Wing commander in a statement. “Our pilot is safe, everyone on the ground is safe and it doesn't look like there was any other serious damage. We’re very thankful for our emergency responders and the support from the local communities.”

Five F-35s from the 388th Fighter Wing were diverted to Salt Lake City International Airport.

The cause of the incident was unknown as of press time. Air Force mishaps are investigated by a board of officers, and an interim safety board has been established.

This is the first Air Force F-35A Lightning II that has crashed, and the last crash at Hill Air Force Base was an F-16 Fighting Falcon in 2009.

DCSO detectives investigating vandalism Detectives with the Davis County Sheriff’s Office are asking for help to identify the individuals in these photographs. On Oct. 20, it was discovered that a restroom at Cherry Farms Park in South Weber was vandalized. Due to the amount of damage, employees were unable to complete repairs. When they returned on the 21st, employees noticed the restroom had received additional damage, including a partially detached sink, a DCSO social media post said.

No bull: It’s buffalo round-up time. More than seven hundred buffalo on Antelope Island will be rounded up Oct. 29-Nov. 9 as the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation conducts its Seventh Annual Bison Round-Up. The public is invited to attend the event. The park will be open from 7 a.m. – 7p.m. each day. The buffalo herd will be rounded-up and pushed to the park’s holding corral facility on the island’s north end Oct. 29-31. Animals will be worked through the handling facility beginning Nov 5. Visitors can get fairly close to the buffalo as they are weighed, blood tested, and vaccinated.

Managing Grief in the Holidays

By William G. Hoy Holidays in grief can be particularly challenging with familiar and sentimental sights, sounds, and smells reminding us our loved one is not here. Because this period of the year is built around relationships, a death in the family can make these weeks very difficult. But rather than attempt to just “grope our way” through these special days, there are ways to grow personally through the holidays as grief becomes transformative for us.

Saying goodbye to a loved one is anything but easy, especially if well-meaning friends and family members expect you to just “get on with your life.” Allow time and space for grieving and crying this holiday season. Keeping a journal can provide a vital opportunity for reflection during the holidays. These weeks will not be the same as before because of the “empty chair” at the table so the pain is inevitable.

A list of favorite holiday activities might be quite lengthy but make that list anyway. The list might include many holiday traditions such when the house is decorated, when and where worship takes place, and in whose home the family meals are shared. Though it is impossible to do everything “just like when Mom was here,” you can evaluate what you do for the holidays and determine, with your family’s help, which of those traditions you want to preserve.

In evaluating holiday traditions, consider creating something new. Lighting a special candle, purchasing a unique holiday decoration, providing gifts to a needy family, or hosting an international student can become meaningful holiday traditions.

Well-meaning friends or family may want you to attend parties and gatherings, hoping to “cheer you up” but take control of your schedule and do only as much celebrating as you feel ready to do. Choosing which events to participate in acknowledges that grief is a tiring experience. Even under the best of circumstances, holidays can be taxing so attempting to attend every event, party, or celebration may bring about total exhaustion. Instead, say “no” to some well-intentioned invitations.

Simply remind friends, “My energy level hasn’t returned to where it was before he died; thank you for understanding my need to decline.”

Pay close attention to physical well-being, too. Adequate rest, good nutrition, and moderate exercise is essential for the grief process. Lean meats with fresh fruits and vegetables are better choices than sugar- and fat-laden treats. If your health care provider approves, a brisk walk or other moderate exercise can help you feel better physically and emotionally. And eating a healthy diet coupled with moderate exercise is a remedy for insomnia for many mourners.

Be sure to consider the spiritual aspects of life, too. Because holidays have spiritual roots make sure to include time for worship and reflection during this period.

Volunteering to help others or making a memorial contribution is a meaningful way to put feet to faith during the holiday season.

While it is inevitable to face pain at the holidays, following these suggestions can help bereaved individuals and families find transformative growth during this special season of the year.

Commission evaluates Utah judges’ performance

W

hen you receive your ballot at election time, do you reach the section on judges and ask, “Why are there judges on my ballot?” If so, you are not alone. In fact, many Utahns skip voting on judges because they do not feel knowledgeable enough to make decisions regarding judicial performance.

Thankfully, times are changing.

The Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission (JPEC) provides independent evaluations of judges to help Utahns cast an informed vote regarding each judge on their ballot.

An independent state commission established by the 2008 Utah Legislature, JPEC is comprised of a diverse group of Utah citizens appointed by the different branches of state government.

JPEC’s primary goals are to collect and distribute valid, nonpartisan information to the public about each judge’s performance and provide judges with useful performance feedback. In addition, JPEC promotes accountability of the judiciary while supporting it as an independent branch of government.

Utah law requires that each judge be subject to a merit retention election if they seek to retain their position.

This means that in each general election, groups of judges appear on the ballot unopposed, and voters must decide whether they should continue to serve in office. The public votes “Yes” or “No.” Utah judges do not campaign or fundraise for their positions, which

helps considerably to keep our judiciary from becoming beholden to donors and special interest groups. Instead, Utah asks its citizens to decide and to base retention decisions on merit.

JPEC publishes evaluation results and determines whether the judge meets or exceeds performance standards or fails to meet them. This information is available to the public on JPEC’s website, judges.utah.gov.

Voters make the ultimate decision with their votes.

Parts of the judicial retention process are not well known to the public.

“To be sure, most judges in Utah achieve high marks on their evaluations, a reflection of the rigorous merit selection process in place,” said Jennifer Yim, JPEC executive director.

However, for those who receive negative determinations by JPEC, they almost always step down rather than allow their evaluation to become public in a retention election.

“When you see a long list of judges who meet or exceed performance standards, you can be sure JPEC’s process has contributed to a state judiciary of the highest caliber,” she said.

Yim urges all voters to complete their ballot this November and become informed on the judges by visiting judges.utah.gov to review the information before making their own choices.

“Citizens have an important role to play in Utah’s judiciary,” Yim said.

New streaming movies for every Halloween vibe

Family-friendly fun: The Curse of Bridge Hollow (Netflix)

There's an entire genre of movies where brave kids battle a magical evil that invades their small town, and I'm always on the lookout for new entries.

"The Curse of Bridge Hollow" is a particularly fun addition to the genre, with a good sense of humor and some nice father-daughter relationship building. The monsters are also really well executed, with enough creative touches to elevate a basic concept into something interesting.

Those same touches are the key to a lot of the movie's charm. The humor is well-balanced and sometimes even manages to be clever. The relationship

between the father and daughter (Marlon Wayans and Priah Ferguson) allows for moments of growth and understanding on both sides. The supporting cast is entertainingly weird without taking over the movie. Added together, it makes for a particularly satisfying Halloween adventure.

Classically spooky: The Old Dark House (Mubi)

A (previously) lost classic from the director of "Frankenstein," 1932's "This Old Dark House" is seen by many as the first haunted house horror movie.

Restored in 2017, the movie follows two groups of travelers who find refuge at a strange house during a terrible storm.

The owners of the house are strange and somewhat unsettling, but is there something even more chilling going on?

The movie is billed as a horror comedy, but there are plenty of genuine chills in here. Director James Whale invented classic tropes even as he played with them, using lighter moments to sharpen the unsettling ones. Add in a cast that includes such greats as Boris Karloff, Charles Laughton and Gloria Stuart, and you have an unmissable example of oldschool horror.

Gory Terror: Hellraiser (Hulu)

Nothing could match the vibe of the original "Hellraiser," a campy, subversive classic. Thankfully, this new "Hellraiser" is less a remake and more of a sequel that’s infinitely more worthy than many of the others that came before it. It’s missing the vibe of the original, but it has its own unique feel and expands on the series’ lore in a fascinating way. And if

you're a fan of gore, don't worry – there's still plenty here.

Unexpectedly for a horror movie, the performances are one of the best things about the new "Hellraiser." Odessa A’zion is fantastic as Riley, bringing unexpected depth to a young woman battling demons both inside and outside of her head. Jamie Clayton is just as wonderful as Pinhead, offering up a performance that breathes new life into the iconic character. Add in some dramatic flair by Goran Visnijic, and you have one of the rare reboots that are worth a second look.

Runners or walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the Trick or Trot Halloween 5k on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Centerville City Hall (250 N. Main St.).

This once a year event is to honor all those who have served and those serving today in the Armed Forces. It gives the community the opportunity to say thank you for your service and thank you for our freedoms.

This year’s Grand Marshals are all women who have served and who are serving today. Rain, snow or shine the parade will go on. Immediately following the parade, a Veterans Honor Ceremony will be held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Layton Commons Park, 437 N. Wasatch Dr.

Veterans Day program set for Nov. 11

BOUNTIFUL—In honor of Veterans Day, a special program will be held at the Bountiful Veterans Park on Nov. 11.

The program will begin at 11 a.m. and features keynote speaker Jennie Taylor whose husband Brent Taylor was killed in Afghanistan in 2018. The event also includes a bagpipe number of Amazing Grace and a Veterans Wreath Ceremony. It finishes with a Royall Air Force Fly Over and a 21 Gun Salute.

Davis School District implements Multi-Tiered System of Supports to better serve students

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—There’s more to education than lectures and homework. Sometimes kids need something extra.

Research shows most children will be successful with some direction and support. That’s the goal of the Davis School District’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).

MTSS is an operational framework for improving academics and behavioral outcomes, said MTSS Coordinator Devin Healey at a recent board meeting. “We started before COVID and had success. It’s been fun to get back into the schools.”

The framework can be applied to several areas including: positive behavior supports, social emotional learning (SEL), restorative practices and attendance.

“It's a triangle with Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3,” said Healey. “All students are in Tier 1. That’s core instruction.

Some kids may need a little more time and individual attention, that’s Tier 2. Tier 3 is intensive intervention. We do this on the behavior side.”

These are critical components using evidence-based practices and team based problem solving, Healey said. “We want it to be instructionally relevant. Sometimes kids fly under the radar.”

Healey said they don’t want to overwhelm schools.

“These are meant to complement practices with academics. We expect kids to behave a certain way but we want to correct, not punish.”

Using PBIS (positive behavior interventions and supports) increases emotional regulation, academic engagement and academic achievement that helps reduce major disciplinary infractions, he said.

The four pillars of PBIS are: • Establish expectations • Teach expectations • Reinforce behavior • Correct behavior errors “We want to support schools,” said Healey. “We’re moving schools to more of a support team. The team is made up of an administrator, counselor, school psychologist and teachers to decide what they’re doing and not doing system-wide to improve behavior and academics. Not individual students but the overall school. It's the support we’re providing to all schools.”

It’s making it happen rather than hoping it happens, he said. “We’re providing training in implementing practices.

It’s data-based that we need to support kids now before it becomes a chronic issue throughout the year. The feedback on the training has been pretty positive.”

Schools will be assigned a coach who will attend the team meetings and walk the schools, Healey said. “They’ll hold parent nights and do community engagement activities.”

There are 22 focus schools that will receive intensive training, coaching, evaluation and funding, he said. “The focus areas will be positive behavior supports, restorative practices and attendance. They will receive up to $5,000 to support implementation work.”

“From the start of the school year until fall break, we have seen a 57% decrease in office discipline referrals from the previous school year,” said Jodi Rees, Sunset Elementary. “We are excited for this improvement and the great things happening at Sunset Elementary.”

Students had some setbacks due to COVID, said Brad Christensen, Director of Student & Family Resources for

the district. “Parents’ paralysis to move forward affects their children. In the whole family we’re seeing delays. We want to teach them what that (moving forward) looks like and how to do that so they can better parent their child and help them be more successful.”

Christensen said they want to reinforce and strengthen the partnership with families. “It’s a community effort for sure.” l

A young boy in Centerville is hoping for his own service dog

R

aising three little boys is tough.

When one of those boys has Down syndrome, the challenge increases. But Morgan Pilcher has discovered a solution that will make her life easier and her child safer. The Pilcher family is raising money to get a service dog trained to help children with Down syndrome. The dog will give Cyrus’s parents some peace of mind.

Cyrus is now 7 years old and has a history of running away and getting himself into dangerous situations. Pilcher recounted several instances where Cyrus would take off.

“I was in Walmart,” Pilcher said. “His brother Jericho was a toddler and Cyrus took off running. With a toddler in tow, I had a hard time catching him. Another mom offered to watch Jericho as I chased down Cyrus. He got out the first set of doors and was heading to the second set when I caught him. No one tried to stop him and he would have run directly into traffic.”

Another time, as Cyrus was leaving a doctor appointment, he ran into the parking lot where a woman stopped traffic, probably saving Cyrus’s life. He also gets up in the middle of the night and tries to leave the house. The family has taken all kinds of precautions, but the only way to keep Cyrus safe is to have a service dog with him at all times.

“The dog will be trained to give an alert when Cyrus takes off, during the times that we’re asleep or not right next

to Cyrus,” Pilcher said. “It will follow Cyrus and keep him out of roads or away from water or any other dangerous areas.

Whenever we’re out in public, we can harness Cyrus to the dog so wherever Cyrus goes, the dog goes. A service dog will also help him when he gets overstimulated by grounding him and giving him support, and help him feel safe to sleep throughout the night.”

The cost for a trained service dog can exceed $50,000. By working with Golden Healer Service Dogs, a nonprofit that provides emotional support and service dogs to families, the cost for the dog will drop to $10,000 and the Pilcher’s are hoping the community can help them out.

“The only portion we need to come up with is $10,000 and the nonprofit makes up the rest,” Pilcher said. “My husband is doing oil and brake changes.

All the proceeds we get from that will go toward the service dog.”

They also have a fundraising page at goldenhealerservicedogs.org/donate/ cyrus-campaign where people can donate.

Pilcher said they’re about a year out from getting a service animal since all of the dogs are puppies and need to go through initial training. Then they will be tested to see which puppy has an aptitude for Cyrus and his needs. Once they match a dog to Cyrus, it will start its training to become a service dog. When it’s ready, the family will spend two weeks working with the dog before it can be placed in the home.

“It will take a lot of anxiety and a mental load off me,” Pilcher said. “Right now, when I take my kids to the park,

Champs again: Davis girls soccer wins 6A title

I

t was an all-Davis County final in Class 6A girls soccer, with Davis battling Farmington at Zions Bank Stadium on Oct. 21. In the third and by far most important matchup of the season between the two teams, Davis was victorious in an exciting 1-0 contest.

It was the Darts’ second state title in the past three seasons and their fourth since 2015.

This one didn’t come easy for Davis, as Region 1 rival Farmington put up a strong effort in the tightly contested game. But it shouldn’t have been a surprise that the game was close – or even that it ended in a 1-0 result. In the previous two meetings between the teams, the final score was 1-0.

Davis outlasted the Phoenix 1-0 at home on Sept. 1, while Farmington returned the favor 26 days later, prevailing by the same score.

This match was for Utah high school

girls soccer’s biggest prize.

Davis got a first-half goal from Kayla Wade off a Brooklyn Phongsavath assist.

The setup came off a corner kick, which Wade headed into the goal in the 37th minute. The goal was enough for the Darts to hold on. The defense kept Farmington at bay, as goalie Elesha Magley got shutout No. 9.5 on the year. In fact, both defenses played well throughout in a contest that lived up to the stature of a state final.

Davis reached the final by shutting out Skyridge 3-0 in the semifinals on Oct. 18.

The Falcons had been a surprise in the state tournament, having lost nine games during the regular season. But their magic ran out against Davis, which got two goals from Emery Jacobs in the first half. Olivia Flint scored in the second half to provide some insurance. The defense kept Skyridge away from the goal throughout the game, with Magley providing the shutout.

Davis finished the season with a 14-5 record. It also had the distinction of winning the state championship without having won its own region. The Darts were

8-4 in Region 1 this year, tying with Layton and Syracuse and finishing a game behind Farmington.

The Phoenix, meanwhile, got to the championship match by shutting out Lone Peak 1-0 on Oct. 18. The Knights entered the contest as Class 6A’s top seed, having not lost a game all season. It was an own goal from Lone Peak with just four minutes left to play that provided the difference.

Goalkeeper Emmy McKeon provided shutout No. 5.5 on the year. Farmington finished the season with a 14-6 record. The Davis goal in the final was the only one the Phoenix allowed the entire postseason.

Bountiful comes close to winning 5A championship The Redhawks nearly made it two state championships in Davis County this girls soccer season.

In a surprising finals matchup on Oct. 21, Bountiful fell in penalty kicks to Skyline after the Eagles prevailed by making four kicks to Bountiful’s two. Neither team managed to find the back of the net in regulation or two overtime periods. The

Redhawks’ Daisy Williams had the shutout going into the penalty kicks round. It was her seventh shutout of the year and No. 12.5 of her career.

Bountiful ended the season with a 13-7 record. Reaching the championship round was not something many people would have expected from either Bountiful or Skyline.

The Redhawks were seeded eighth in Class 5A, having gone 5-5 in Region 5 during the regular season. Skyline, meanwhile, placed third in Region 6 with an 8-4 mark and lost five games during the regular season, earning a No. 10 seed.

The Redhawks earned their way into the finals by dispatching Cedar Valley 2-0 in the semifinals on Oct. 18. The Redhawks scored a goal in each half, with Chloe Pickett and Ellyse Kessler doing the honor.

Belle Sorensen had an assist, and Williams had the shutout.

The Redhawks could be a force next season. Only seven of the team’s 42 players graduate at the end of the year.

Viewmont, Woods Cross football fall in state tournament

W

hile Farmington, Davis and Bountiful rested and observed, the Class 6A and 5A football state tournaments began last week.

Unfortunately for Viewmont and Woods Cross, their stays were short.

As the No. 20 seed in 5A Viewmont played at 13th seed Cedar Valley. The Vikings had a great first half and took a 21-14 lead into the locker room. But it was all Cedar Valley from there. The Aviators outscored the Vikings 38-13 in the second half with their 38 second-half points coming unanswered. Cedar Valley took a 21-14 deficit and turned it into a 52-21 lead with 9:30 left in the game.

Cedar Valley used its offense and defense to defeat Viewmont, though it was the Vikings who made the big plays early on.

Viewmont was up 14-0 with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter. Luke Jacobs hit Kingston Mickens on a 55-yard touchdown pass four minutes into the game. Five minutes later, Viewmont got the ball back, and Jacobs broke off a 73-yard TD scamper. After Cedar Valley got on the board to make it 14-7, Viewmont scored again when Jacobs hit Noel from 20 yards out.

It was all Cedar Valley from there, which proceeded to go on a 45-0 run.

After scoring 17 points in the third quarter, Cedar Valley had an offensive TD at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Then, Cedar Valley had interception returns for touchdowns on back-to-back plays. Viewmont got a pair of late touchdowns to make the score closer. Daren Tovey connected with Nate Savage for a 29-yard TD pass. Miles McGrath then had a 1-yard plunge across the goal line with 4:02 to play.

Viewmont finished the year with a 4-6 record.

Just a minute and 12 seconds later Woods Cross was on the board again when Malepeai had a 57-touchdown reception from Bradley Bailey. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Wasatch blocked the point-after kick, leaving the team down 28-27. The Wildcats weren’t able to get on the board again, falling just short in their bid to move onto the second round.

The Wildcats garnered the 10th seed, thus getting a home game in the first round of the state tournament on Oct. 21. Woods Cross faced Wasatch, the No. 23 seed in 5A which had lost six games coming into the state playoffs.

But it was Wasatch that came away with the narrow win, 28-27.

A big second quarter was the key for the Wasps, whose 21 points in that period was the difference. Wasatch turned a 7-0 deficit into a 21-14 halftime lead by outscoring the Wildcats by 14 points in the second quarter. Wasatch added a touchdown in the third quarter to go up 28-14

108 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. He also had the 57-yard TD catch. Bailey had 118 yards on 7-8 passing. Cash Henderson had 40 yards on 14 carries and amassed eight tackles to lead the team.

Woods Cross finished the season with a 6-5 record.

This Friday, Bountiful hosts Orem in the second round, while Farmington hosts 21-seeded Weber, and Davis hosts 10th-seeded Riverton.

Mom and daughter duo leading Bountiful volleyball

W

hether or not it’s a storybook ending for Bountiful High’s Evalyn “Evi” Chism as a setter for the Redhawks volleyball program, it’s certainly been a fairytale journey for the senior and her mom, Sarah Chism, who is the BHS head coach.

Coach Chism, who has been heading up the program for eight years has had an especially sweet experience the past four seasons in sharing the court with her daughter.

“Because I’m coaching all of the girls, I really don’t have the ability to spend much time with her to explain things all of the time, but because we already have an emotional bank account between us, I can be more short and direct with her and she accepts and even appreciates that,” Sarah Chism said. “Coaching her has been truly a dream though because she listens to feedback and the changes she makes are tangible and immediate.”

“It’s been very very special to share this experience with my mom,” the daughter of Matt and Sarah Chism of Bountiful said, particularly noting the celebration of the Redhawks’ 5A state title last season. “What an incredible journey it has been to go through the struggles and trials and come out on top.”

Evi grew up mainly playing basketball before deciding around her junior high years that volleyball was the sport for her. “I loved the sport as well as the connection it brought me and my mom,” she said. Coach Chism, who by then was the head coach at Bountiful and had led the team to consecutive 4A state championships in 2015 and 2016, said, “Evi was always in the gym when I was coaching the high school girls and she thought it looked so fun and the girls were so nice to her,” Sarah Chism said. “She just loved watching and waiting for her turn to try out and be a part of the team.”

With her commitment to volleyball, Evi was also determined to be a setter, just like her mom, despite Sarah’s encouragement that she try another position on the court.

“She wanted to touch the ball a lot and direct the team where to go and have an impact on the game,” Sarah Chism said.

After beginning to develop her skills in club volleyball – where her mom “has always been there even if she wasn’t my direct coach,” Evi excelled quickly within the high school varsity ranks. As a freshman starting setter,

she led her team to a top-five finish and then a 5A state semifinal spot, where Bountiful lost to eventual champion Timpview, as a sophomore in a year where she earned Third Team All-State recognition.

It was that 2020 final four loss that pushed Evi to “constantly try to progress,” and her individual and the team’s collective efforts culminated in the state title last fall as a First Team All-State player this time around.

“Pressure moments don’t affect Evi, and she really came like that,” Sarah Chism said. “The way she sees the game is very strategic and she has a real feel for the flow of the game. She makes her teammates better through her consistent play, and I can also trust that she’s going to make the right decisions.”

This season, the 5’10” setter eclipsed the 3,000 career assists mark in a match against Lone Peak early in October and currently sits at third all-time in Utah with 3,134. The Bountiful squad she runs the offense for is currently 25-1 and they are ramping up to defend their state title which would be their fourth championship since Coach Chism was brought in a month into the 2015 season – with her college teammate Sabrina Hughes – to be interim coaches. Chism has a record of 178-46 over her eight seasons with Bountiful and has also led the program to six region titles in that span, including the last two Region 5 championships.

With this being Evi’s last year of high school volleyball, there is certainly some emotion tied to the season for mother and daughter. “Instead of focusing on everything being her last though, we’re choosing to embrace and celebrate what we’ve done,” Sarah Chism said. “We also want to focus on the task at hand, what’s in front of us and take care of business.”

After the season, Evi will graduate early and move on to play for Utah Valley University where she will follow in her mother’s footsteps as a collegiate volleyball player – Sarah Chism played for three years at Dixie College and the University of Utah during the mid-1990s. “I always wanted to play college sports and I feel so blessed to be able to keep playing the sport that I love,” Evi said.

Her mom saw that potential in her daughter to play at the next level as well. “Mentally, I knew Evi could be there as she’s such a high IQ player and has the competitiveness and drive, so I just felt like if she could do it physically, that was all it would take,” Sarah Chism said.

Evi said that UVU matched up with what she was looking for in a college program. “It was important for me to find a coaching situation like my mom created here

“My mom talks about how volleyball seems like it’s so important right now, but it will end at some point and she has taught us countless things like how to be a leader, be a good teammate, pull people along, ask for help, work through hard things and keep going, learn from trials and have grit and not give up.”

Sarah Chism said, “Evi has learned everything that I have and I’m so proud of how well-rounded she is in seeing volleyball for what it is and not having it be her identity. I’m excited for what’s ahead for her. It’s going to be so awesome to just literally now go and cheer and be her biggest fan.”

Evi’s cheering squad will also include her dad and three brothers – two of whom played basketball for Bountiful – and her 14-year-old brother, Landon, who’s become the tallest of the bunch and is playing volleyball as his sport of choice.

And though the time on the court will end for Evi and her mom together, the memories and their close relationship will remain. “She hasn’t just been my volleyball coach, she’s also my life coach,” Evi said. “And my best friend,” Sarah Chism added. l

BHS volleyball staying hot as the season winds down

On Senior Night Oct. 18, Bountiful beat Woods Cross 25-17, 25-14, 25-15.

Jordyn and Taylor Harvey combined for 25 kills to lead the Redhawks Evi Chism and Claire Cook recorded seven kills each as well. Chism ran the offense with 33 assists while also serving up three aces. Defensively, Milika Satuala had four blocks at the net and Chism and Jordyn Harvey both recorded 10 digs each on the back line.

Against Box Elder, Bountiful again swept a Region 5 opponent – their ninth straight of the season – with a 25-10, 25-9, 25-19 victory over the Bees.

Jordyn Harvey put away 21 kills while Taylor Harvey added 12. Chism served seven aces with Jordyn Harvey recording six. Chism again had 33 assists in setting up the Redhawks’ hitters. Jordyn Harvey also led the defense with seven digs.

Bountiful remains undefeated in region play with a 9-0 mark and a 24-1 overall record.

Davis

Davis defeated Fremont 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-5 Oct. 18 behind 13 kills from Aubrey Nielsen and 11 kills from Brinley Bush. Aimee Larsen ran the Darts offense dishing out 39 assists while Averee Dorius led the team defensively with 12 digs.

Against Syracuse Oct. 20, Davis won 25-21, 27-25, 18-25, 27-25.

Nielsen put away 16 kills, Leah Clark had 14 kills, Loryn Helgesen added 13 kills and Bush had 10 with Larsen facilitating several offensive sets with 56 assists. Bush and Nielsen completed double-doubles with 15 and 13 digs, respectively, while Cambria White recorded 12 digs on the defensive side.

With the two wins this week, the Darts are now 9-3 in Region 1 play and 21-7 overall.

Farmington

On Senior Night against Fremont Oct. 20, Farmington defeated the Silverwolves 25-11, 20-25, 25-15, 25-23.

“I am super proud of how the seniors played and supported the team,” said head coach Kate Hawkes. “They really pushed hard to finish the game and have shown huge improvement since the last time we played Fremont.”

Hawkes credited her team for their support of each other in the win. “The younger players that came off the bench in tight situations really stepped in to help secure the win,” she said. “It takes true sportsmanship to cheer on other team members when you would prefer to be playing yourself. I am proud to be coaching such extraordinary girls.”

The Phoenix squad brought their Region 1 record to 5-5 with the win and improved to 13-10 on the season.

Chamber given outlook on economic development and tourism

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—Davis County is the smallest county by land but the third largest in population. That’s how dense and built out it is.

“We have a population of 362,000 which is expected to double by 2060,” said Community & Economic Development Director Kent Andersen at last week’s Davis Chamber of Commerce meeting. “There’s just not a lot of places to develop. I look at the current situation with my own kids. In 2040 it will switch. I want a place where my kids can live.”

Local realtors show the median income in Davis County is $85,000, he said. “But you need $90,000 to buy a home. Our median income does not match home prices.

It’s a challenge to know how to continue to develop when we don’t have land.”

Thirty-five percent of the county’s population is under 19, said Andersen.

“We used to raise crops, now we raise kids.

We’ll have a larger age population in 2060 where now you have a 4,000 square foot home with six people in it, it may only be two people. South Davis has aged out – that affects the school district.”

The county oversees 15 cities and also manages the unincorporated areas, Andersen said. “Transportation is something we have a stronger role in. That doesn’t just include roads. We wish we had more trails.

They’re packed, there's just not a lot of trails.”

The Bonneville Shoreline Trail is being

developed to add to the trail system, he said.

“It will be a 55 mile non motorized trail from Salt Lake to the Weber River. It will be new and reconstructed with federal/private/public easements and 15 miles of trail from Mueller Park to Ensign Peak.”

Davis County Tourism Director Jessica Merrill explained the other piece to put more money into the economy – tourism.

“Most people think of tourism as fun,” she said. “But we also have to look at the practical side, why it exists and the power of tourism.”

Sales tax from tourism goes back into the community, she said. “Strong tourism subsidizes property tax. There’s about $1,600 a year savings per Utah household on property tax. That has an effect on your pocketbook.”

Davis County is fifth in total visitor spending, said Merrill. “Visitor economy is 4.25% for hotels, 1% for food and 4% transportation. It doesn’t come from the general fund, it comes from consumers and

North Salt Lake photographers share their talent

ity Hall was alight on Oct. 19 for a special event honoring those who took and submitted photos representing their city of North Salt Lake. All photos submitted were displayed and guests were able to select a “People’s Choice” award in both the children and adult categories. The last year’s winners were placed on easels for all to see what was hanging in the City Hall from the previous year. Energy was high as many prominent citizens of North Salt Lake and photographers congregated in the council room. The photos were then flashed on the available screens in the room as winners were announced and awarded a gift card.

If you have a good eye and a cell phone or camera and see beauty all around your hometown, you may consider snapping a

shot or two and then submitting your best to the contest next year. The photo contest has been going on for three years now and submissions are due in October. The pictures need to be taken in North Salt Lake, but don’t have to follow any certain theme.

Beautiful nature shots dominated this year’s contest, though a striking shot of a playground structure bathed in neon red won the People’s Choice award. The People’s Choice award in the children’s division was a thick, lightning bolt connecting a menacing cloud to a distant mountain.

Braxton Wilhelmson, a talented artist, and commercial photographer, then displayed his amazing photography while sharing important elements of a great photo.

Lighting is key. Taking pictures of people in shadow or with a side light can avoid the problem of dark, shadowed eyes and faces.

Using the portrait mode available on many cell phones allows for the blurred background that can emphasize the people in the photos. A more advance camera can reduce the depth of field to achieve this. A good photo does not have large blocks of empty space, so plan to get interests in all areas.

In fact, conceptualizing the shot you want beforehand can be key to success. Always consider your audience. Cell phone filters tend to degrade the original photo. GREAT PUMPKIN HUNT

The group has been holding the event for the last 30 years. When it gets dark the kids go pumpkin hunting for pumpkins hidden in the woods. Each child is given a pumpkin name and they take a flashlight and try to find that pumpkin. There were 100 people who showed up for the fun and everyone had a great time together.

The daughter of two-time Academy Award-winning director Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog,” 2021), she is best known for her leading roles in the period drama “Ginger & Rosa” (2012) and the fantasy-romance “Beautiful Creatures” (2013).

Her upcoming role in “Dangerous Liaisons,” which premieres Sunday, Nov. 6, on Starz, sees her star alongside Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread,” 2017) and Clare Higgins (“Hellraiser,” 1987). Englert portrays Camille, who, according to Deadline, “is a beautiful young woman from nowhere with a mysterious past who seeks revenge on the wealthy aristocrats who led her to ruin.”

Born June 15, 1994, in Sydney, Australia, Englert’s first role came in the short film “The Water Diary” (2006), which was written and directed by her mother and centered on a young child (Englert) living through a drought. Alyssa was born in Alameda, CA on May 6, 1984; died on Aug. 17, 2022 in Panaca, NV of congestive heart failure exacerbated by other health issues. Funeral services were held in Rupert, ID. She was the youngest of four children.

She was raised in Centerville, UT and Burley, ID. She is survived by her husband, Tom E Richardson; sons Korgan Lary and Xalum Lary; brother Brent R Lisonbee, and sister Angela Lisonbee Stanger (Jason); step-brothers Jim Madsen (Shelly) and John Madsen (Kimberly); father Gene R Lisonbee (Carol) and mother Sherry L Lisonbee Poulton.

She was preceded in death by her brother Bradley B Lisonbee; grandparents Richard and Lucille J Lisonbee and Boyd and Dorothy Poulton. Alyssa was buried in Burley, ID; next to her brother.

She was an organ donor.

Pull out the felt and place it in a small amount of water. Let it soak for a few minutes and then discard the felt. Add a small amount of bubble solution to the bowl. Your mixture should be half highlighter water and half bubble solution.

The phosphorescent chemicals in the highlighter ink are made visible by the ultraviolet in a black light.
