Original Dowdle puzzle depicting Davis County unveiled at courthouse ribbon cutting

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—It was a big day last week as officials cut the ribbon on the newly renovated Davis County Memorial Courthouse. The two-year renovation project combined restored elements with some historical fixtures.

The courthouse has gone through several renovations since it was built in 1890 and has now been restored to its 1930s glory.

“In 1890 it was a Victorian red brick building,” said Davis County Facilities Management Director Lane Rose. “In 1930 they took off the roof and knocked down a couple of walls and built around it.”

In 1958 and 1979 additions to the courthouse were made. The recent renovation removed those additions, renovated the original historic 1930s section and exposed brick from the Please see COURTHOUSE: pg. 4

ing Discover Davis puzzles with at least one thing that represents each of the 15 cities in the community. The puzzle also includes popular attractions, historical favorites and iconic people.

Dowdle attended the unveiling on June 9 and talked about the inspiration behind the piece. “We also had the painting made into a 4’x5’ puzzle for the event and had 18 puzzle pieces missing,” said Jessica Merrill, Discover Davis Tourism Director. “Eric then invited a representative from each of 15 cities along with our three commissioners to come up and place their puzzle piece in their right spot to complete the puzzle.”

Merrill said Dowdle puzzles helped her, like many others, get through the pandemic. “As I did puzzle after puzzle, I was completely envious of all the destinations that had their own masterpiece for families to discover and enjoy through art. Ultimately, this started an 18 month journey of working with Eric Dowdle and his team to create a Davis County original painting, a first of its kind (he has never done a county before). On June 9, we were finally able to reveal a Discover Davis, Dowdle Folk Art painting with puzzles soon to follow.”

It was such a fun project to work on and have come to life, she said. “We can’t wait for families from all over to experience our destination through art and then hopefully be inspired to come visit us to enjoy our attractions in person.”

“Historically what’s preserved is the facade, marble in the corridors, tiles and finishes,” Rose said. “We worked with CRSA architects that have significant experience in restoring old historic buildings. The records department was critical in finding historical information.”

There are a handful of items that are really historical, he said. “We’re matching colors from historic photos. It’s more of a replication rather than preserving historic elements that have been remodeled.”

For the last 20 years it's been one big building, said Rose. “The commissioners wanted a nice plaza out of that space (where the additions were removed). It’s been in the works ever since we built the Administration building.”

The 8-foot stained glass window from the 1930s will remain and sit above the war memorial in honor of those who served from Davis County.

Other renovations included bringing back the 1930’s courtroom floor space, exposing ceiling joists and recreating the corbels. “The corbels are actually cast from the originals,” he said. “They used horse hair as binders and we found some in the ceiling.”

In addition to the historical pieces of the courthouse, something new was added – an original painting/puzzle by Eric Dowdle that showcases what makes the county a fun and beautiful place to visit.

Man killed in wrong-way crash on I-15 DAVIS COUNTY—A man in his early 20s was killed Saturday morning when a wrong-way driver on I-15 hit his car head on.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the accident happened about 3 a.m. when a black Silverado was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes in the HOV lane. A green Toyota Camry was traveling southbound in lane one. The Silverado struck the Camry head-on after drifting out of the HOV lane.

The driver of the Camry was killed on impact. The male driver of the Silverado who was also in his 20s sustained critical injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Early investigation shows the Silverado’s lights were not turned on. I-15 has no artificial lighting in the area. Alcohol is being investigated as a contributor in the driver of the Silverado, UHP said.

Lost hikers rescued up Davis Creek The Davis County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue were called out last week to rescue some lost hikers up Davis Creek. The call came in at 10 p.m. “Fortunately we had their cell phone GPS location and our teams were quickly able to locate our hikers and hike with them back to the trailhead,” a DCSAR Facebook post read. “Thanks to the DCSAR team members, deputies, and dispatchers for a speedy response and a successful outcome.”

Dustin Matthews, 37, was booked into the Davis County Jail on multiple charges including child kidnapping and assault against an officer.

“About 8:30 p.m. officers were serving a court order to remove the three children,” said Bountiful Police Assistant Chief Dave Edwards. “He became agitated and refused to comply. He took the 3-yearold into a residential neighborhood and left the 6 and 8-year-old children with an officer.”

Edwards said they received information that Matthews had gone into a woods area so they began a search for the child and Matthews. “Because the safety of the child was primary to us we use resources from the Public Health helicopter, K-9 units from several agencies, the Davis County Child Abduction team and all officers also responded to the area to find the child.”

A citizen saw Matthews emerge from the neighborhood and contacted police in the area, he said.

“They were able to locate him near 1000 E. 400 North. Matthews did not comply with officers and was tased and taken into custody but was uninjured.

The child was uninjured.”

The mother of the children came to the police department and took custody of the children after they were recovered, Edwards said.

Is a gas-free future realistic for automobiles?

ike many of my readers, I am at a complete loss when it comes to repairing appliances and machinery.

This extends to routine car maintenance.

My idea of a dipstick is a toothpick designed to spear an item on an hors d’oeuvres platter. I have no more idea of how many quarts of oil are required for my car than I know how many bones are contained in my body. To me, a piston is a basketball player in Detroit.

So when I hear reports that American and Asian automakers are planning on eliminating gasoline engines, I question their accuracy. In my experience, Cadillacs are meant to run on petroleum, not a charge from Ready-Kilowatt! It’s the American way; it might even be in the Constitution!

So I ask my friend Kevin. He is a conservative Republican who operates a gas station. His concept of climate change is turning up the air conditioning in his repair shop. He’s also a “car guy” who is a darn good mechanic.

I tell him I am skeptical of a future in which we drive all-electric or even hybrid cars. He agrees.

A Salt Lake car dealer specializing in electric vehicles reported last week that he had the highest sales for any year in business. Of course, electric car registrations in Utah are still less than 1% of all vehicles.

I ask Kevin what percentage he sees in 20 years. “Maybe 25%,” he says.

“The gas station will not be eliminated unless mileage ranges can triple and quadruple. It’s nice to be cool and say you’re helping to stop global warming.

But it’s also important to be realistic, and we’re a long, long way from an all-electric future.” Odds are we are never freeing ourselves from the gas pump. l

LETTER TO EDITOR Do the right thing on gun control Dear Editor: Reading that Republican Rep. Ray Ward sponsored a bill approx. two years ago to improve school safety, I am encouraged.

I know of one Davis County elementary that created a secure vestibule where visitors are buzzed in before entering. That is a step in the right direction. However, shortly after that improvement I noticed a sign on the front of that school that read “Come around the back for Breakfast” – in other words, notifying people that one could be let in in the rear of the school bypassing the secure vestibule. And we in Davis County continue to build new schools where the ‘Driveway Unload-

ing’ zone is built right next to the glass front of the school. Did we not learn anything from the Oklahoma bombing?

Add to that I heard one parent in a meeting say that because her elementary was right next to the police department that “no one would dare attack that school.” She was making a dangerous assumption that those who would kill innocent children are rational.

Some say that we should ban assault weapons; my answer to that is perhaps we should. I need a pistol to defend myself but I don’t need an assault weapon. Some say we should allow teachers to carry weapons; perhaps, I could go with concealed weapons after concealed weapons training

for the teachers. Some say we should hire veterans to protect our schools and that works for me.

Others say we should increase mental health services in schools and communities and as a social worker, and as a Democrat I am good with that.

I am old enough to remember when Republican Reagan released many mentally ill people into our communities to save money.

Last year Republican Reps. Teuschler and Weiler promoted a power grab from the school districts that we citizens elected to make decisions to protect our children. Therefore protecting our children is on the Utah Republicans shoulders; they have taken sole

responsibility with their power grabs.

Republicans must make better decisions. To continue doing what we have been doing clearly isn’t working.

It is American insanity. Churchill said Americans eventually do the right thing, after they have tried everything else.

Get ready to compete in the Kaysville quest

ather together a team and get ready to compete in the first ever Kaysville Quest.

The Kaysville Quest will be held July 15-16, and is a giant scavenger/adventure hunt that lasts 24 hours. The last day to register a team is June 26, and $20 is the entry fee for each team.

Teams of four will compete by completing various challenges across Kaysville and Davis County. The goal is to rack up as many points as possible by completing the challenges; each challenge will be assigned a point value.

Challenges can range from tying a shoe to reaching the end of a hike.

Mystery challenges and obstacles will be thrown teams’ way throughout the 24 hours to keep teams on their toes.

“24 hours may seem impossible for

some but each team will go at their own pace,” said Harrison Haslam, who is in charge of the quest. “Teams can sleep when they want to, divide and conquer when applicable, and attempt as many or as little challenges as they want. This can be very competitive for some, but for others it doesn’t have to be.”

Haslam is encouraging anyone to put together a team and sign up. The only requirement is the team captain has to be 16 years old or older, and have a valid drivers license.

Teams are required to attend the mandatory kickoff event on Friday, July 15 at 6 p.m. at Barnes Park. The kickoff event will last for two hours.

At the kickoff event, teams will check-in, receive their challenge packet, event materials, and sponsored goodies.

Local businesses, food trucks and vendors will also be at the kickoff, hosting mini challenges to help get their list rolling.

“Each challenge specifies the medium for which the challenge is submitted,” Haslam said. “For example, it could be a photo, video, text, quiz, QR code scan, or GPS check in.”

Teams will receive a Kaysville Quest relic, and will have to include it in each picture or video submitted to prove that the photo or video was taken during the event. Without the item in the picture or video the challenge submission will be rejected.

After 24 hours, teams will be required to check in to the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony will also take place at Barnes Park at 6 p.m. on Saturday. First, second, and third place will be announced and will receive their winnings.

LETTER TO EDITOR Beware of campaign fliers

Dear Editor, I am gravely concerned with the fliers that have been distributed to voters in District 19 presenting negative information about Ray Ward. As a citizen of Bountiful I am upset that in a time of divisiveness someone is trying to win a campaign through negative ads that create confusion and division. As a political scientist I am appalled that someone is misrepresenting, oversimplifying, and misinterpreting data to create negative ads.

Letters to the Editor are not long enough to allow for a comprehensive review of the blatant misrepresentations in the fliers. I can simply invite everyone to go to the actual data sources – supposedly cited in the fliers – which include the website for the Utah State Legislature (www.le.utah.gov) and Professor Adam Brown’s research on the Utah State Legislature (https://adambrown.info/p/research/ utah_legislature).

I teach an undergraduate political

science course at a local university with the hope of helping students develop or deepen civic knowledge and an understanding of the complexity of American government.

I warn my students often about oversimplified and inaccurate information, and the ads attacking Ray Ward are the very thing I warn them about.

I often share with students one of the most important things that I was taught, “you must accurately represent your opponent’s position before you can truly critique them.” This is how good arguments are made and debates are won. Unfortunately, in our TikTok world it is often easier to create strawmen through oversimplification and misrepresentation to harness outrage instead of accuracy.

hen The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced in the spring of 2018 that it would sever ties with the Boy Scouts of America, scouts and leaders weren’t sure what to expect.

Nearly 20% of BSA members were part of the church which provided a significant part of the organization's funding.

The partnership that lasted more than a century, ended on Dec. 31, 2019.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presented its own global youth program in 2020 and fans of scouting wondered if the BSA would survive.

Farmington resident Rob Gomez was one of those worried parents.

“A lot of people think scouting has kind of died,” he said, “but every time I go to meetings, the boys are there and they’re excited.”

More than two years later, BSA is still around, providing opportunities for youth to learn leadership skills, build character, achieve goals, serve the community and develop a love for the outdoors.

When Gomez moved his family from Colorado to Farmington, he wanted his son, Anthony, to be involved with a group that shared his same ideals of faith, community and service. He registered Anthony, now 14, for BSA and over the last eight years, he feels he made the right decision.

“It makes him think about the world, not just himself,” Gomez said. “They develop into young men as they work through the ranks. They develop and think and learn how to be leaders.”

Based in Bountiful, Troop 220 has been around since 1954, and Brett Sutherland is the troop’s ninth scoutmaster. He got involved with scouting in junior high after he realized he needed a better group of friends.

“Now, more than ever, [scouting] teaches youth how to make decisions,” Sutherland said. “I’ve been in scouting most of my life. I know it made a difference in my life.”

Scouts are encouraged to provide service and often hold group service projects. They organize food drives, clean the cemetery on Veterans Day and set up flags at funerals for military veterans.

“The way they advance through the ranks, every rank has service hours required,” Sutherland said. “I’m passionate about it but you have fun at the same time. They learn good lessons about being a good citizen.”

Experiencing nature has always been a big part of scouting. Sutherland said, “If you take out the ‘outing’ there is no ‘scouting’.”

Boys learn how to deal with inclement weather, practice life-saving skills

and develop stewardship for the planet.

The troop is non-denominational, accepting people from all faiths.

Sutherland said funding for scouting programs has dropped significantly and the Boy Scout Council sold off some property to keep operating. But he’s optimistic that scouting programs will remain vibrant and vital to communities.

Retired dentist volunteers time, talents to Pantry Smiles program

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com KAYSVILLE—Every other Friday for the past eight years, Dr. Duane K. Orchard has been donating his time as a dentist to help patients who would otherwise not have access to dental care receive the treatment they need. Orchard was part of the Pantry Smiles donated dental program that is a partnership between the Bountiful Community Food Pantry, Davis Technical College (DTC) and Weber State University (WSU). He retired from the program last week.

“I’ve been doing it since retiring from my practice in 2014,” said Orchard.

“Lorna (Koci, Pantry Smiles director) and Dr. Jim Guinn put the thing together.”

Pantry Smiles provides services to uninsured Davis County residents depending on their income. Patients receive treatment in a modern clinic at the DTC where dental assistant students give chairside assistance to the volunteer

dentists.

Orchard was born in Richmond, Utah and raised in Idaho Falls. He attended Brigham Young University after serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Dublin, Ireland. He attended Northwestern University Dental School and was commissioned in the army dental corp where he served for two years. Orchard opened up his own dental office in Bountiful in 1976.

Since retiring from his practice in 2014, Orchard has gone on several dental missions. “I went to dental clinics in Samoa and Tonga and spent a month in Mongolia,” he said. “Not in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d be a dental assistant in Samoa.”

“He’s been a master teacher,” said Cathy Turnbow, lead dental assistant instructor at DTC. “He was always helping our students. That made all the difference.”

Pantry Smiles also works with residents at Red Barn Academy. “I was going through a longtime recovery a long time

ago,” said Kevin who now works at Red Barn. “I didn’t have any front teeth but I have them now because of a dentist who was kind enough to donate materials and time to get me my teeth. It’s a big deal, it makes a big difference for our guys.”

Orchard is known for his jokes, said Koci. “One patient said ‘I wish you were still my dentist. I’ll miss your jokes.’

Another patient said he was an artist.

‘He made sure everything looked perfect before I left.’”

“There have been some nice people,” Orchard said. “I’m very appreciative of this opportunity. It has been rewarding to maybe help them get on with their lives.”

“He is loved and respected by all who have been privileged enough to know him,” said Koci. “There are many, many people’s lives you have helped.

Drought conditions worsening as weather heats up

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com (Editor’s Note—This is one of our continuing series of stories as part of our Davis Journal Water Watchers campaign) his week’s Monday rain storm was nice – it kept lawns and gardens looking a bit fresh. Still, Utah’s worst drought in state history is continuing, and state officials say it’s getting worse.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, 5.71% of the state is in exceptional drought (the very worst category) and 99.88 percent of Utah is in severe drought.

It’s worse in the south, where Cedar City and St. George tied their records for the driest May on record in 127 years.

“Now that portions of the state have moved into ‘exceptional drought,’ water conservation becomes even more critical,” said Brian Steed, executive director of the Department of Natural Resources. “Residents looking to stretch our water supply can find rebates and conservation tips at SlowtheFlow.org” The division released a report last week with updates on several areas where the drought is having an effect. Among them: • Crop yields and feed availability for livestock are expected to be scarce.

• Drier conditions have created “fuels” for wildfires. There have already been 183 wildfires in Utah this year (as of June

13), with 152 of them human-caused.

• State parks are under tight fire restrictions. Visitors can have campfires but only under certain conditions and each park updates restrictions almost daily.

• Fishing has been impacted by low water levels. Some fishing spots have increased their limits for anglers as a way to help reduce fish populations.

According to DNR reports, 13 of Utah’s largest 45 reservoirs are below 55% capacity. Overall, storage is estimated at 63% of capacity, and 61 of the state’s 99 measured streams are flowing below normal, with four at record low levels. The Great Salt Lake traditionally drops about 2 feet each summer, and at its current elevation of 4190.8 feet, that would mean the lake could hit a historic new low this summer.

Water restrictions are in place in every community along the Wasatch Front.

Even in public places such as parks and golf courses, rules and procedures are in place to limit or carefully monitor water usage.

Road projects moving along in Davis County

T

wo huge transportation projects continue construction in Davis County, with one more than 50 percent complete.

The U.S. 89 expansion from Farmington to I-84 is now a little over halfway finished, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. Construction of the West Davis Corridor spans from Centerville and Farmington north to Syracuse.

Highway 89 added three new interchanges at 400 North in Fruit Heights, and at Oak Hills Drive and Gordon Avenue in Layton. Work activities have shifted focus to reconstructing and widening U.S. 89 under the new Antelope Drive interchange and the bridges over U.S. 89 at Crestwood Road and Nicholls Road.

Work will be ongoing through 2023.

UDOT officials say the improvements include widening 89 to three lanes in each direction from Main Street in Farmington to State Route 193 in Layton.

In addition to the new bridges and on/off ramps, a 3-mile extension will be added to connect Gordon Avenue with 89.

“This will help local traffic access the new interchanges and crossing efficiency,” UDOT states in its update of the project. “The frontage roads will include shared shoulders that will also function as a parallel bicycle route.”

The West Davis Corridor is a new 16-mile, 4-lane divided highway being constructed in western Davis County between the I-15/Legacy Parkway junction at approximately Glovers Lane in Farmington and the future extension of S.R. 193 in West Point. Freeway-style interchanges with on- and off-ramps will be built at Legacy/I-15 (Farmington), 950 North (Farmington), 200 North (Kaysville), 2700 West (Layton), 2000 West (Syracuse), and Antelope Drive (Syracuse).

Construction on segments of the corridor are well underway, though no specific timeline for completion has been finalized. When completed, the corridor will include more than 10 miles of new trail and trail connections to connect Emigration Trail to the Legacy Parkway Trail.

In the Centerville/Farmington area, crews have begun pile driving for bridge foundations for a connection at 650 West and about 1150 South. That will continue

through the end of June. UDOT is advising residents to expect consistent noise, increased vibrations and increased dust during daylight hours Monday through Saturday. A fire hydrant was scheduled to be installed at about 650 West and 1050

South at the end of this week (after our press deadline).

After four-year hiatus, air show is back

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com HILL AIR FORCE BASE—Preparations are in full swing for the 2022 Hill AFB Warriors Over the Wasatch Air & Space Show scheduled for June 25 and 26 and organizers are expecting more spectators than ever.

“It’s been four years since we had the show,” said Executive Director Utah Air Show Foundation Kevin Ireland.

“We’re extremely excited. It’s six and a half hours of flying each day. It’s a larger show than ever before. We’re thrilled people will be able to experience it and it’s free.”

Visitors can look up into the sky all day long and see planes from WWII, Vietnam to the present day, he said. “It’s also one of the top recruiting tools to get into the Air Force. Twenty percent said after getting to talk to a pilot they wanted to learn to fly. It also gives veterans a chance to reminisce a bit.”

In addition to the aerial show there will be a STEM City with hands-on booths and activities. “There’s a lot to see and experience in two days,” said Ireland. “The gates will be open and give us a chance to show the community what goes on inside the fence and experience what we do day after day.”

For the last two years everyone has been hibernating, he said. “People are hungry to get out and interact with their neighbors. You don’t want to miss it for sure.”

Ireland said the release of the Top Gun movie is great timing. “We’re extremely jacked. The film coming out is a perfect storm to get people super excited.

The air show gives them the chance to experience it, to see it, smell it and feel it.”

They’re expecting up to 600,000 spectators, he said. “It’s a $50-$60 million economic impact when the show comes.”

“It’s a huge undertaking,” said Lt. Col. Joseph Michaels, air show coordinator. “We start planning two years out.

It takes that amount of time. There are about 1,200 volunteers and all the training behind it.”

There’s been a four year hiatus and the interest is unbelievable, he said.

“We’ve been in COVID so long that we want to reach out to the community and let them know how much we appreciate

Michaels said the F-22 is his favorite. “It outperforms anything in the world. It’s spectacular. The crowds love the F-35 and everything it has to offer. It will be an enjoyable event.”

The Thunderbird F-35 demo team undergoes intensive training, he said.

“They have to certify each year and they go around doing shows, about one show every week during the year.”

There are civilian performers in the show as well. “They are incredible,” said Ireland. “About 50 percent have prior military experience but others are people who just love to fly and do aerobatics.

They’ve honed their skills with many hours of flying.”

Ireland said they find most of the civilian performers at a convention held in December. “They come from all

over the world and we have a chance to interact and hire people for upcoming shows. We build relationships with performance teams but it’s driven by dollars as well. We’re fortunate everyone likes to perform here. We can hand pick who we want to come to the show.”

The foundation raised $800,000 for the show, he said. “We help fund the Hill

show – that’s our mission. We’re the logistical piece. We get the tents, performers, hotels, rental cars, etc. and the Air Force builds the show around what we bring and they make it happen.”

Parking will be tight at HAFB Air Show

W

ith more than a half million people expected to attend the two-day air show, drivers can anticipate heavy inbound and outbound traffic delays the two days of the show – June 25 and 26.

The best way to avoid these delays is to ride the UTA FrontRunner to the Clearfield Station, where there will be free shuttle buses taking attendees to the front entrance of the show. There will also be limited parking available at the Clearfield Station for those wishing to take advantage of the shuttle buses.

Other parking lots for the air show include the Weber State Davis Campus, off University Parkway Boulevard, and Northridge High School, off Hill Field Road.

Shuttle buses will be available to take attendees to the show and will run continually from these lots.

The final option for parking is on base. Attendees can enter through the Roy and West Gates and will be directed to parking lots just inside those gates. No attendees will be admitted through the South Gate. For directions to these gates, please refer to the transportation map. Parking along Highway SR-193 is strictly prohibited as it affects traffic flow and creates a safety issue.

Base housing residents will be directed to use the West Gate between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The South Gate will not be available to residents, or other military and dependent ID cardholders during these hours. Base residents are encouraged to limit movement during the air show weekend.

In addition, the Base Exchange will be closed both Saturday and Sunday.

Gates open at 8 a.m. both days of the air show and admission is free.

Juneteenth – a celebration of African American history

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com SALT LAKE CITY—Juneteenth is not only a celebration of African American history, but also cultural history. Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19 and was recently made a state and federal holiday.

“Its name comes from a combination of the month of June and the date 19th, which was the date that the slaves on Galveston Island, Texas learned that they had been freed as per Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation,” said Jerri A. Harwell, Department Chair Associate Professor of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). “We know from U.S. History that President Lincoln issued two Emancipation Proclamations, one in 1863 which freed all the slaves in the rebellion states and the second one that ended slavery for all in 1865.”

General Gordon Granger and his military company arrived in Galveston and read General Order No. 3, said Harwell. “Juneteenth celebrations began the following year with families and smaller communities and has since grown and become a federal holiday.”

The significance of Juneteenth in the community is the recognition of culture, history and the existence of slavery in America, she said.

As part of the Juneteenth celebration, SLCC is holding an event on June 22 from 6-9 p.m. at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus in the Student Center’s Oak Room. It is open to the public and admission is free. Baritone soloist Robert Sims will perform as well as Dr. Deidre Tyler, the SLCC Poet Laureate and Marian Howe-Taylor will recite “Lift Every

Building emotional resilience in young women and girls

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com SALT LAKE CITY—The idea of being resilient in the face of difficult challenges can be hard for young women and girls to develop. In a workshop led by the Utah Women & Leadership Project at Utah State University titled “Building Emotional Resilience in Girls and Young Women,” experts shared ways to strengthen the impact fostering resilience can have.

“What is resilience?” said Jessica Peterson, therapist and adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas.

“It’s the idea of overcoming, bouncing back and overcoming obstacles to move forward.”

“I was born to two teenage parents so I’ve had to sort of scrape through life,” said Dr. Jen Doty, assistant professor of youth development and prevention. “This is close to my heart.”

The pandemic had a stronger effect on girls, Peterson said. “One in four girls thought about suicide. ER visits for suicide thinking are two times what they are for boys.”

Girls in general deal with problems internally and hold their emotions on the inside, she said. “Boys tend to act out and deal with it on the outside.”

Girls struggled before the pandemic, said Peterson.

“It’s a triple bind. They’re supposed to act sweet and nice, be a star athlete and get straight As. You need to seem sexy and hot even if you’re not. They’re impossible expectations to keep up.”

“We need to help them find balance and practice self compassion,” Doty said. “One of the strategies is mindfulness where they learn to balance work, sleep and play and have them practice some of those strategies themselves. They’ll be less likely to feel depression and it helps with lowering their stress levels. Mindfulness can be very powerful.”

Watch for signs that they might be considering suicide, said Peterson. “Things like they’re sleeping a lot or not sleeping. They’re eating a lot or not eating. They start giving things away that are important to them and

Ask them if they’re having suicidal thoughts, she said. “It used to be that people would say if you ask those questions you plant the thought. Usually if they’re not having those thoughts they’ll say ‘no why would you even ask?’”

Some barriers to self compassion are body image, comparisons and toxic perfection, Peterson said. “If we have empathy for others and ourselves that can help with self compassion.”

Social media isn’t all bad, Doty said. “There are a

lot of positive things. But certain times in people’s lives it can be more toxic than another time. One of those times is when girls are entering middle school. They start comparing themselves with people online.”

Those pictures have been airbrushed, she said.

“They’re shot in perfect poses. Seeing that, girls this age are suffering more with anxiety.”

Find ways for them to be connected to a larger world, Doty said. “Prosocial activities lower depression and anxiety. Help them find their spark and reinforce it when you see it. Over time you’ll see patterns with that spark in young people.”

Sometimes girls can be hard on each other, said Peterson. “When there are mean girls, step back and think about what’s going on in their life and don’t take it personally. Teach girls how to use boundaries and create healthy relationships rather than being really hard on people when they make mistakes.”

Girls need a caring adult and cheerleader along the way, she said. “Find people who care like coaches or teachers. Look for role models.”

Connect authentically, said Peterson. “Send an encouraging text to a woman or young girl. Think about how we can support each other but work on yourself first. Figure out what fills your soul and what brings you peace.” l

Summer Passport 2022 offers families an antidote to summer boredom

K

eeping kids engaged during the summer can feel daunting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported most kids spend between six to nine hours each day in front of a screen. The Summer Passport Program, which is active here in Davis County, is an antidote for summer boredom. The free platform gives parents and caregivers fun options for summer adventures as families work together to win prizes.

In the summer of 2017, Sharilee Griffiths created the program that has evolved into Discovery Family Adventures, providing suggestions for year-round family fun. Griffiths said the program invites parents to be intentional when interacting with their children.

“Research came back very positive that the program’s doing exactly what we said all along,” Griffiths said. “That families are spending more quality time together, that parents are spending more time with their kids and are motivated to spend more time with their kids.”

With more than 100 fun, free adventures on the main hub at MyDiscoveryDestination.com, families can cater challenges to include science, arts, reading, crafts, gardening and more. Families are encouraged to download the free Discovery Hunt App (Goosechase) and

Heidi Costello participated in the summer program last year with her two children. She said having fun ideas helped so kids don’t get stuck in a rut during summer break. She also recommends joining the local community Facebook pages for additional challenges and prize opportunities.

“I feel like now it’s even easier. I feel like it’s a lot more simplified this year,” Costello said. “The reason to do it is you’re getting ideas to do as a family. I love that it gives us so many ideas of things to do and they’re not hard things.”

Several county health departments help fund the program so the activities and reward events are free. The Davis, Bear River and Central Utah Health Departments track the evidence-based program through pre- and post-assessments to make sure it’s reaching the goal of strengthening families, creating long-lasting bonds and developing resilience in children and teens.

Kaysville home receives new paint from Zions Bank volunteers KAYSVILLE—As part of Zions Bank’s 30th annual Paint-a-thon project, a Kaysville house received a makeover last week – one of 30 homes across Utah that received a fresh coat of paint.

More than 50 bank employees and their families rolled up their sleeves to paint the home of Ron Johnson, 64.

Johnson has been living in his home in the Willow Pines Mobile Home Park for 25 years. He also grew up in the same neighborhood.

Along with beautifying neighborhoods, the Paint-a-Thon project aims to help elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners take pride in their homes and maintain their independence, according to Zions’ spokesperson Julianne Gee. Throughout the week, more than 1,600 Zions Bank employees and their families volunteered to clean, scrape and paint 30 homes in Utah and Idaho.

In addition to painting, Zions employees provided yard clean-up, pruning, mowing, planting and minor repairs as needed by homeowners. The cost for all paint and supplies was contributed by Zions Bank. Local pizza joint, The Pizza

Place, is providing food for one of the days of Paint-a-Thon.

The average age of this year’s homeowner is 75, with an average yearly income of $24,489. Projects completed during the annual week-long event were selected with the assistance of nominations from the public, state housing agencies, community organizations and local churches.

“After Paint-a-Thon was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic, we’re so excited to be back in our communities to mark our 30th Paint-aThon by painting 30 homes,” said Zions employee and Paint-a-Thon team captain Michelle Paskett, “We look forward to this service project every year and find great satisfaction in transforming the homes and yards of our neighbors in need.”

‘Toy Story’ tie-in makes ‘Lightyear’ an odd movie

“L

ightyear” left me with so many questions.

The movie, opening in theaters this weekend, is supposedly the in-universe backstory for “Toy Story” characters Buzz Lightyear and Emperor Zurg. It’s also a B-level sci-fi flick, complete with a tormented hero and the kind of deeply dodgy science that falls apart when you think about it at all. Alone, either would probably be a decent way to spend an afternoon.

It’s when you put them together, though, that things get weird.

The movie opens with Buzz making a big enough mistake to strand a colony ship on a strange planet. (At least, it looks like a colony ship. But Buzz can’t stop talking about being able to go home, to a place where he could once again be a space ranger,

which doesn’t sound like a colony.)

Buzz is so obsessed with fixing his mistake that he burns away the next 100 years of his life, losing his best friend in the process, and resorting to crime.

That’s when he runs into a ragtag group of wannabe space rangers, including his best friend’s granddaughter. Along with Buzz’s therapy cat bot, they’ll face the biggest threat their little backwater planet has ever seen – Zurg and his robot army. Can they save the day, or will Buzz’s next mistake cost him everything?

If you ignore the tie-in elements, it’s a solid sci-fi adventure with so many science-based plot holes it’ll give you a headache if you think about them too hard. I’ll spare you the details, but I’m particularly annoyed that most of the holes could have easily been fixed. Just a few lines at the right moment in the script.

Still, there are things to like.

There’s a positive message here, about learning to make peace with your mistakes and finding new dreams. There’s also a ton of deeply gorgeous animation, complete with little moments where the animators were clearly just showing off. The team-related hijinks are fun, the final face-off is interesting, and the robots are appropriately intimidating.

Buzz’s cat bot is both adorable and hilarious enough to draw in both kids and adults, and completely steals the show more than once. (If this really was the movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear doll, it would have been completely overshadowed by robot cat toys. There’s a world out there somewhere where the co-lead of the “Toy Story” movies is a big orange cat with a fake flamethrower in its mouth.

But what works decently well in

a B sci-fi movie becomes really weird when it’s the backstory for cartoon characters. The strangest element of this is the truth about Emperor Zurg, which is actually somewhat affecting in the movie. In the context of the “Toy Story” movies, however, it’s deeply unsettling. If action-figure Buzz ever heard about it, he’d probably need therapy.

Which means that, in the end, my biggest question is whether I’ll ever be able to watch the “Toy Story” movies the same way again.

f all the accolades she’s earned, all the titles she’s won, there was probably none sweeter than what Courtney Wayment achieved at Saturday’s NCAA Track and Field Championships in rainy Eugene, Oregon.

The BYU senior and Davis High graduate from Kaysville blew the field away in the 3000 meter steeplechase, winning the title in a time of 9:16.00

and breaking the collegiate record by more than 8 seconds. It was the fifth fastest American time EVER, either for a collegian or a pro. Second-place finisher was Kayley DeLay of Yale at 9:25.08.

Leaping over those barriers in a steady rain didn’t deter Wayment, who has been close in this outdoor race several times and has three NCAA indoor titles already, in the 3000, 5000 and distance medley relay. BYU coach Diljeet Taylor said post race that Wayment “destroyed the record” and showed signs going into Saturday’s race that she was ready and determined to win it all.

“The plan was to rely on my fitness, and if anyone was going to come with me I’d put my foot on the gas a little bit more,” she said in an inter-

view with ESPN after the race. Taylor said the plan was for Wayment to run a 4:57 first mile pace, which she did.

The coach enjoyed success with two BYU athletes in Eugene. Ashton Riner won the women’s javelin on Thursday.

Former Cougar Anna Camp won the 1500-meter run in the 2021 NCAA outdoor championships during her senior year. As a team, BYU finished 9th at the NCAAs. The future for Wayment looks bright. She plans to stay in Provo, training with Taylor as she turns professional, as Camp did last year. She’ll also be back in Eugene for the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which could give her a spot in the world finals to be held in July, also in Eugene. l

Finau makes 43-foot putt for big bucks

tah native Tony Finau finished second in last week’s RBC Canadian Open golf tournament to Rory McIlroy, a long-time friend, but the way he finished was worth a ton of dough.

On the 18th green in the final round, Finau rolled in a 43-foot birdie putt to finish at 17-under par, one shot ahead of third-place finisher Justin Thomas. That putt proved to be worth $174,000 alone, the difference between a second-place finish (worth $948,300) and what Finau would have split with Thomas if they’d tied for second. Thomas took home $600,300 for third. Yeah, there’s too much money in golf, but I digress.

Finau’s foundation is among the benefactors from the Utah Championship on the Korn Ferry PGA Tour that will once again be played at Oakridge Country Club in Farmington Aug. 4-7.

Volleyball camp set at Viewmont High A three-day volleyball camp for boys and girls in 5th through 11th grades is set for June 21-23 at Viewmont High School. The beginner\intermediate camp will run from 3-4:30 p.m., with the advanced camp from 4:30-6 p.m. They will be held in the Viewmont High gym at 120 West 1000 North in Bountiful.

Campers will receive a sports-focused volleyball shirt, and students from all school zones are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

TURKEY HUNTERS will see changes this fall.

Changes made for upland game, turkey hunts T he Utah Wildlife Board has approved changes for 2022 upland game and turkey hunts.

The board also approved a few changes to turkey hunting. Previously, hunters could purchase three either-sex permits for the fall turkey hunts. The fall turkey hunt was implemented in 2014 as a way to address ongoing nuisance turkey issues and depredation that result in damage to private property.

“Because these hunts are implemented to decrease the turkey populations in localized urban/agricultural areas, having hunters harvest female turkeys would be more beneficial to help decrease turkeys in those targeted locations,” DWR Upland Game Coordinator Heather Talley said.

“However, we noticed that a higher number of male turkeys are being harvested during these fall hunts than we expected.”

The board voted to reduce the number of fall turkey permits to only one either-sex permit per hunter and to remove public land, so the fall turkey hunts only occur on private lands. The

board also voted to cap the number of permits for the northern and central regions in Utah at 25% of the number of permits sold in 2021, so 2,305 permits and 750 permits, respectively, for those areas.

There are currently three hunting units that allow sage grouse hunting in Utah – the Diamond-Blue Mountain, Rich County and West Box Elder County. The Parker Mountain hunting unit was closed to sage grouse hunting in 2021, due to population declines in that area. The areas where sage grouse hunting is allowed in Utah are where the populations are doing well, and the hunting permits are re-evaluated each year and allocated based on population estimates.

Due to increased populations over the past year, the Utah Wildlife Board approved reopening the Parker Mountain hunting unit to sage grouse hunting for the 2022 season. Those hunting permits will be kept at or below 5% harvest of the total population in that area.

The challenges of fishing in a drought

U

tah remains in an extreme drought, but anglers still want to wet a line and plan their fishing trips.

Wildlife officials will continue to issue fishing reports, which we collate and publish in the Davis Journal, but they are also issuing some warnings about this summer.

Drought impacts fish by reducing the amount of water available in lakes, reservoirs and streams throughout the state. These are primary habitats for Utah’s fish, and having less water affects fish in multiple ways.

“This smaller amount of water heats more quickly and warms to higher temperatures than when there isn't a drought,” Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Sportfish Coordinator Randy Oplinger said. “Warmer water also holds less oxygen than colder water. The combination of high temperatures and low oxygen can stress fish, causing poor growth and disease. Fish can also die when temperatures are too warm or the oxygen levels get too low.”

Trout in low-elevation water bodies have the greatest likelihood of being impacted by the drought this year, but low water levels and high water temperatures can affect all fish species.

For those who enjoy fishing from a boat, you should try to visit your favorite lakes and reservoirs as soon – and as often – as you possibly can.

Similar to last year, water levels at some reservoirs and lakes could be so low by July that boat ramps may not be functional. Before you plan a boating trip, be sure to check for updates on each waterbody to see if the ramps are open, especially later in the summer.

Again this year, the DWR is strategically determining where fish will be stocked this year, in order to either reduce or eliminate fish from being stocked into water bodies where biologists think that summer fish kills are possible due to low water. The fish that were scheduled to be stocked into drought-impacted lakes and reservoirs will be relocated and stocked into other water bodies around the state that

won’t have low water levels.

“We try, whenever possible, to continue to provide a good fishing experience for anglers, up until we think that water levels will be insufficient,” Oplinger said. “Then, we want to reduce the number of fish in that waterbody by decreasing the number of fish that are stocked there.

We are hopeful that anglers will catch and harvest most, if not all, of these stocked fish by the time water levels become so low that fish survival is impacted.”

If you are fishing in a lake or reservoir and want to give the fish you catch and release a better chance of survival during the drought, you should consider fishing in the mornings or evenings when temperatures are cooler. Another way to help fish is to pick a fishing spot that has deeper, cooler water, so you can release any caught fish into an area where they are more likely to survive.

“Basically, try not to fish near little coves that have shallow, stagnant warm water,” Oplinger said. “Instead, pick a spot where you can release your fish into better quality water to increase their survival rates during this hot, drought year.”

And there are more suggestions on how you can handle fish while decreasing stress: • Use single hooks on lures and bend down the barbs for easy release.

• Minimize the time you spend “fighting” the fish and any hands-on handling.

• Use rubber or coated nylon nets to protect a fish’s slime layer and fins.

• Quickly remove the hook with forceps or needle-nosed pliers.

• Minimize the amount of time the fish is exposed to the air, especially when the weather is warm. And keep your hands wet when handling the fish.

• If the fish is deeply hooked, don’t pull on the line. Instead, cut the line as close as possible to where it is hooked and leave the hook.

• Allow the fish to recover in the net before you release it.

• If the fish doesn’t stay upright when you release it, gently move it back and forth. l

June tips to help with your gardening

une is here, the sun is shining, and gardening is in full swing.

Consider these tips from the Utah State University Extension Gardener’s Almanac to help make your yard and garden the best they can be.

• Consider drip irrigation in the garden to conserve water.

• During a drought, it’s especially important to remember that turfgrass only needs 1-1 ½ inches of irrigation per week.

• Discontinue harvesting asparagus spears in early June to allow the fronds to form for the rest of the growing season.

• Prune tomatoes to open the canopy of the plant.

• Consider planting sweet corn in the garden every other week (until early July) to extend the harvest.

• Prune spring flowering shrubs (those that bloom before June) after they have bloomed to encourage new flower buds for next season.

• Deadhead (cut off) spent blossoms of perennial and annual flowers.

• Thin the fruit of apples, peaches

and apricots to approximately one fruit every 5-6 inches.

• Apply a second application of pre-emergent herbicides in June to control annual weeds in the lawn, such as crabgrass and spurge.

Yard and Garden Pests • Monitor vegetables and herbs for earwig damage.

• Protect ash trees with a registered chemical to prevent lilac/ash borer damage.

• Control codling moth in apples and pears to reduce wormy fruit.

• Treat apples for powdery mildew when leaves are emerging (at 1/2 inch green) until early June.

• Watch for insect pests in raspberries from mid-May through early June.

• Control the Western cherry fruit fly when fruit changes from straw color to pink to avoid maggots in cherries.

• Control the peach twig borer in peaches, nectarines and apricot trees.

• Monitor for damaging turfgrass insects. In areas previously damaged, consider a preventative (systemic) insecticide.l

Deer in your yard? You can blame the drought (Editor’s Note—This is one of our continuing series of stories as part of our Davis Journal Water Watchers campaign) ust another byproduct of Utah’s severe drought this year is its effect on wildlife, and how animals are “visiting” our yards and neighborhoods in search of food and water. There are many reports of deer eating vegetables and flowers in yards along the Wasatch Front. “Many wildlife species are impacted by the extreme ongoing drought conditions that Utah is facing, particularly deer,” said Faith Heaton Jolley, spokesperson for the Division of Wildlife Resources. “The limited availability of food and water can lead to a reduced number of newborn fawns and fewer fawns that survive their first year. The harsh conditions can also reduce the number of huntable buck deer and result in lower overall deer population numbers. Drought can also impact antler growth for buck deer because a sparse food supply provides fewer nutrients, which bucks need to grow antlers.

years, and if their body condition is poor during pregnancy, their male offspring may have relatively smaller antlers, even after reaching maturity.”

Three ideas that DWR suggests for those wishing to protect their gardens are fairly simple. One is to build an 8-foot high fence around the garden or yard. These can be temporary and materials found at home and garden stores. Another suggestion is to install a motion-activated sprinkler, which would obviously come on if a deer or other animal came into the garden. You can also plant unpalatable vegetation around the garden’s perimeter to deter deer from eating additional plants.

Heaton said that while some people may want to prevent deer and other wildlife from eating their lawns or gardens, others may be looking for ways they can help hungry and thirsty animals this summer. That can lead to unsafe situations for the animals and people.

“The best way you can help wildlife is by letting animals stay wild,” Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Wildlife Section Chief Covy Jones said. “Don’t

approach them, and don’t try to feed them. These animals have evolved to be able to survive numerous weather conditions and to make it on their own. Often people’s good intentions wind up doing more harm than good for the wildlife. It can also be really dangerous when deer,

moose or bears become habituated and lose their fear of people.”

Anna Johan Beutel Honey Gibb 1937 - 2022

Anna Johan Beutel Honey Gibb returned home to her Heavenly Father with open arms on June 11, 2022, surrounded by her seven children and youngest sister. Johan was born on July 29, 1937, in Miami, Arizona.

She was the oldest daughter of Kurt and Mildred Lewis Beutel. She had two sisters, Elizabeth Jane Hutchison (BJ) and Meredith Sanders. Johan was a perfect example of a big sister and loved her family. She graduated from Miami High School in 1955. She graduated from BYU in 1959, with a bachelor’s degree in education, and in that same year, she married her first husband, Bruce Alden Honey in the Mesa Temple. They were blessed with seven children: Randall (Janet) Honey, Teresa Tippetts, Diane (Craig) Jones, Ron Honey, Linda (Grant) Horsley, Shane (April) Honey, and Lisa Tippetts. She spent many years teaching in the Davis County school district as a special education teacher and loved every minute of it. In 1991, she married Golden Boyd Gibb. They served a mission together in Raleigh, North Carolina, from February 2000 to August 2001. She and Boyd were faithful temple workers for many years.

Johan loved playing the organ. She played the organ in her home ward for decades and in the temple weekly. Johan loved her 28 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Johan was preceded in death by her parents, husband Boyd, her sister, BJ, daughterin-law, Denise, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Actress, producer and screenwriter Lena Waithe has solidified her position in Hollywood as one of television’s finest talents.

She has tried her hand at many different jobs in the industry and paved the way for greater diversity in the business through critically acclaimed works such as the coming-of-age drama “The Chi,” which follows the lives of residents on Chicago’s south side.

Waithe created, co-produces and stars in the series, which premieres its fifth season Sunday, June 26, on Showtime and Paramount+.

Like the characters in “The Chi,” Waithe was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. Her first love was not acting but writing, and she had ambitions to become a television writer from the tender age of 7.

With strong familial support behind her, Waithe moved to Los Angeles after graduating college in 2006 and soon became an assistant to the executive producer of the sitcom “Girlfriends.”

Her first acting role came as a minor part in a 2014 episode of “The Comeback,” starring Lisa Kudrow of “Friends” fame. Waithe also wrote for several television series during this time, including “Bones” and “How to Rock,” and served as a producer for the satirical comedy film “Dear White People” (2014).

In 2015, Waithe began starring as Denise in the Netflix comedy “Master of None” alongside Aziz Ansari (“Parks and Recreation”). Together, they won the 2017 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the Season 2 episode “Thanksgiving,” which was based on Waithe’s own coming out experience.

Since then she has landed roles in a 2018 episode of the Emmy-winning series “This Is Us” and a recurring role in the sci-fi thriller “Westworld.”
