WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO MAKE SCHOOLS SAFER?

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—The whole country mourned together when 19 children and two adults were killed in an elementary school shooting in Texas last week.

It’s one of the worst mass shootings but unfortunately not the first. Now people are asking what can be done to stop such tragedies.

“We don’t think about it until something horrible happens,” said Rep. Ray Ward, who sponsored HB120 in 2019 to try and address the issue. “The bill had three parts. One was to set aside money for physical improvements in schools for safety. It didn’t get funded because no one was in agreement of what we really need to make them safe.”

Some schools have improved traffic flow with a single entry and intercom system, he said. “People will sell you safe rooms and iron bars but there was no agreement on how money should be spent to make things better.”

Davis Education Foundation wins overall Best of State award

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—The Davis Education Foundation works tirelessly to remove barriers to learning for students experiencing homelessness or other economic disadvantages. Now the Foundation has been recognized for its work with the overall Best of State award in Community Development at the Best of State awards banquet held last week at the Salt Palace.

“We’re honored and thrilled that our work has been recognized,” said Davis Education Foundation Executive Director Jodi Lunt. “They selected a group of charitable organizations that were making a difference for marginalized, underrepresented populations who are working to move the needle. The best nonprofits working with youth experiencing homelessness to communicate the reality of students in this silent, pervasive problem in the state teens face. Young people are often invisible.”

In an effort to bring the situation to light the Foundation created the video “Give Hope.” “We wanted to show a day in the life of a teen facing housing insecurity and what they might do,” said Lunt. “Hundreds and hundreds of community organizations used the video as a springboard for service projects and acted upon it.”

It’s exciting to see that it ignited communities to do incredible work, she said. “It’s powerful when we work

together the impact we can have to give hope tomorrow for a better future and a stronger generation to follow.”

The video has directly assisted in raising more than $2 million for teen centers in the Davis School District. “As we began the process we knew teens needed drop-in resources and wrap around services and asked ‘what does that look like?’” Lunt said. “A teen might not look the same as an adult in homelessness.”

Lunt said the depiction in the video came from stories teens told them. “We wanted people to see, feel and experience a day in the life of a teen with housing insecurity and realize they’re like our own children, and show the obstacles and barriers they’re up against every day.

That’s what motivated us to create the video.”

More than 1,200 children in the district are experiencing homelessness, she said. “It is a silent, pervasive problem even in Davis County. We invite the community to engage with us in this cause to provide hope to this very vulnerable population.”

It doesn’t just have to be housing, said Lunt. “There are 14,000 children who are economically disadvantaged or in some kind of insecurity with food, etc. We are trying to address that to help them in reaching their maximum capacity and success.”

The Foundation first received a Best of State medal for Community Communications in the division of Community Development and was then selected as

Man stabbed during altercation FARMINGTON—A 43-year-old man was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly stabbed another man in the back during an argument that started on a Utah Transit Authority bus.

Christopher Ray Marquez was booked into the Davis County Jail May 29 and charged with aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

The stabbing victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.

According to police, Marquez, his mother and the man started arguing over money while on the bus so the driver kicked them off at the Farmington stop near Lagoon Drive and Park Lane. After leaving the bus, the man allegedly continued to ask the woman for money.

Marquez allegedly chased the man and pulled a knife. The man told police he tried to defend himself with a spackling knife and alleged that Marquez punched him with his right hand and used his left hand to stab him, charging documents said.

Police said Marquez told them he stabbed the man after he threatened him and his mother with a construction tool. Marquez alleged he stabbed the other man once and then called 911 after backing away.

Police trying to locate driver in hit and run Layton City Police are asking for the public’s help to locate the driver of a vehicle involved in a hit and run. A 9-year-old boy was hit while crossing King Street on Gentile at around 1:40 p.m. on May 13. The juvenile received minor injuries and is doing well, however, the driver of the vehicle who hit him left the scene prior to being contacted by law enforcement. The investigation has determined the driver is likely not at fault, however, they still need to speak with him. He is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 40 years old with an average build. Please contact the Layton City Police with any information regarding this incident and the involved driver and reference 22-11713.

Suspect attempts to cash stolen checks The Bountiful Police are asking for the public’s help to identify this woman who is a suspect in multiple stolen/forged checks cases. The woman attempted to cash a stolen check using a stolen drivers license. She was last seen driving the vehicle pictured with a stolen license plate on it. Woman accused of defrauding friends and family through tax scheme FARMINGTON— A Kaysville woman is facing fraud charges after being accused of taking tax refunds from friends and family after she told them she would do their taxes for free.

Trina Semon, 39, was booked into the Davis County Jail on charges of tampering with a witness and theft by deception.

Semon was first charged in 2018 for allegedly taking money from multiple victims between 2014 and 2017 for more than $20,000 combined. According to the charging documents in the new cases, prosecutors allege that Semon stole more than $50,000 overall and also allegedly told witnesses not to talk to investigators.

Investigators said Semon would have portions of the taxpayers’ refunds deposited by the Internal Revenue Service into her own account then the remaining funds would go to the taxpayers, a probable cause statement said.

According to charging documents in the 2018 case, Semon allegedly took a refund check for $3,000 from one of her victims after telling the taxpayer not to cash it when it came from the IRS. “Semon then went and cashed the check herself.”

In the new charges filed, investigators said they identified 13 more possible victims.

friend and his wife have a major disagreement. She has received her second COVID booster shot, noting studies that show protection from the first booster declining over time in older Americans. He is resisting, convinced from internet blogs that the majority of COVID-related illness comes from those who received the vaccine.

She calls him an “idiot” who wallows in conspiracy theories rather than sound medical science. He says she is part of the “woke” establishment who believes the government-pharmaceutical company cartel.

Studies, of course, are interesting, with differing results based on the methodology and the study groups. The study a few years ago on the health benefits of red wine has since been debunked. The benefits come from the grape itself, not wine, and since wine drinkers tend to have higher income levels, the health benefits may come from access to medical care and healthier diets, not the alcohol.

A similar case was seen last month when an exhaustive study was conducted on the benefits of coffee. An earlier study

BY BRYAN GRAY found coffee drinking could slightly reduce longevity with caffeine being the suspected culprit. However, a larger study separated coffee drinkers who smoke from those who didn’t and those who didn’t drink coffee at all. The results: Those who drank coffee but didn’t smoke had slightly less cancer and a major reduction in diseases like Alzheimer’s.

An analysis reported that coffee drinkers who didn’t smoke had less diseases than those who didn’t drink it at all.

Here are a few other studies: PORNOGRAPHY – About 12 years ago, a national study found Utahns were number one in the nation in their consumption of pornography. A later study rebuffed this, putting Utah at 40th. Who knows? A “Utah Stories” magazine reporter suggested Utah’s high rank in pornography viewing could be based on the state having the youngest average age in the nation, and most likely porn viewers are between 15-34. Frankly, I don’t know how one can estimate the extent of pornography since there are more than 420 million porn sites on the internet and porn industry’s profits are larger than the combined revenue of the National Football league, National Basketball Association, and Major League Baseball.

FITNESS – Some studies have Utah as one of the most physically fit states in the U.S., especially if the study ranks its low percentage of alcohol and tobacco use. Other studies rebut this, pointing to an abundance of “meat and potatoes” diets, high sugar consumption, and a low incidence of physical exercise. Again, I have to question this: Utahns typically live longer, and most 70-year-olds are not eager to be running half-marathons.

EDUCATION – Studies putting an emphasis on high class loads place Utah low on education rankings, but others rank Utah higher based on national test scores. Honestly, it’s difficult to compare Utah with California or Washington, D.C. since the Beehive State has fewer poverty neighborhoods and a comparatively low number of English as a Second Language households.

And then there’s my favorite SINFUL study. One reported that Utah was the most religious state based on church attendance and contributions made, while another found it highly sinful due to gluttony (high meat and sugar intake) and greed (lower than average donations to non-profit social organizations).

Pick your study to fit your own bias. But as for my friend’s suspicion of the COVID booster, all I know is that before the vaccine was distributed, the hospitals were bulging with dying and seriously ill patients on ventilators. The science is irrefutable. The vaccine works to prevent serious illness – so get the booster shot!

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com SALT LAKE CITY— Jordin Petersen Seamons, her husband Devin and their 2-year-old Lily had a happy, wonderful life until the night of Dec. 23, 2018 when a car accident took Devin’s life and seriously injured Jordin and Lily. The family was headed from their home in Smithfield to see the lights on Temple Square with family when they were hit by a drowsy driver who fell asleep and hit the Seamons’ car head-on.

“Our life was just so, so good,” said Seamons. “In a matter of seconds our whole life changed forever when a car crossed four lanes of traffic.

The girl had stayed up until 4:30 a.m. out with friends and got up at 7:30 a.m. and hit us head on which from there we proceeded to roll six times. My husband passed away within minutes.”

“We were in a car accident,” said Lily Seamons.

“This lady was sleeping and she hit us and my dad died. I miss my daddy.”

Jordin Seamons shared her story at a Zero Fatalities event Memorial Day weekend to mark the beginning of the 100 Deadliest Days, the time period during the summer when fatalities are usually the highest. So far there have been 116 fatalities this year, the highest they have been in more than 20 years at this time of year. There were 108 by the same date in 2021 and 86 in 2020, according to the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS).

“Reckless behaviors like driving impaired, aggressive or distracted are costing innocent people their lives,” said John Gleason, UDOT Public Relations Director. “Summer

should be a time for making happy memories and we want Utahns to get to their travel destinations. But in order to do that, everyone on the road must drive safely. That means buckling up, obeying the speed limit and focusing on the road.”

“My entire life fell apart because of someone else’s choice,” said Jordin. “It was something that never should have happened and could have been prevented and it wasn’t. We asked each candidate to submit a short profile–200 words or less–along with a photo. We will publish election results in our Davis Journal that will arrive in homes on July 1. We encourage you to get out and vote–let your voices be heard.

Becky Edwards Today, Utah is at a crossroads. Between a growing population and a transforming economy, we are facing historic challenges. A global pandemic, affordable housing crisis, inflation, severe drought, and political division—these issues are impacting Utahns at every junction, but Washington politicians have put them on the backburner.

For me, family is the cornerstone and the basic unit of our society and I see it constantly being attacked. I have a record as a fiscal conservative.

In this time of record inflation, we need to live within our means and keep Utah the best managed state in the country with small, efficient, responsive government.

I am committed to protecting Davis County families and preserving our conservative values. Personal liberties and religious freedoms are fundamental rights that must be fiercely defended.

politics, I have never run for political office previously. As a now retired orthopedic surgeon, I feel that I have the time to become more involved in the political life of Davis County.

Our culture and system of government have come under assault by those who wish to make fundamental changes in both. Our schools have been bombarded by social engineering, with CRT and sexualization of our school curricula. I believe they have no place in our schools. Some would change our capitalist economic system, which guarantees opportunity but not equal outcomes. Socialist or communist systems, which have always failed when tried, are suggested as alternatives.

Freedom of speech is also attacked, and systems of censorship have been proposed. The second amendment, which guarantees our right to keep and bear arms, is constantly under assault.

I believe that we need to reaffirm our support for the freedoms guaranteed by the constitution, and protect our system of government against such fundamental changes.

Ray Ward I have represented Bountiful in the Utah House of Representatives since 2015 and have really enjoyed it. I currently serve as House Chair of the Social Services Appropriations Committee, overseeing all of the health- and welfare-related programs in Utah including Medicaid, Services for the Disabled, and Child Protective Services. Important issues for me include improving health care, reducing government waste, supporting education, maintaining a favorable environment for businesses, keeping a healthy physical environment, giving

careful consideration to all sides of difficult issues in order to find practical solutions, and communicating with constituents.

I am a family physician at Cope Family Medicine/Ogden Clinic in Bountiful, where I see patients of all ages in a variety of life situations. I received an MD-PhD degree from the University of Washington in Seattle and completed Residency in Grand Junction, Colorado. I currently serve on the Board of Directors at Lakeview Hospital. I served as a scoutmaster for 9 years. My wife, Beverly, and I have three children, one son-in-law, and one beautiful granddaughter. SENATE HOUSE DISTRICT 20 Ronald Mortensen I am running to provide an alternative to the incumbent who is out-of-touch with average Utahns.

Since being in office, the incumbent has voted to impose an additional 3.1% state sales tax on food and a 4.85% sales tax on gasoline. She voted for a one-size-fits-all water metering mandate, to make it easier for illegal immigrants to use our children’s social security numbers, to give our drivers license records to the University of Utah, and against a bill that prohibits abortions should Roe be overturned. She would have the governor appoint the State School Board rather than trusting you to elect it. She has powerful, hired-gun lobbyists helping with her campaign and represents big money interests.

I am running a pure grassroots campaign with no cash donations. My expenditures are limited to producing homemade flyers and the shoe leather it takes to go door-to-door. I oppose mandates of

Melissa Garff Ballard I was born and raised in Davis County and attended the University of Utah, where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance and a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Accompanying. I managed my professional piano studio for more than 23 years and recently released an album with Centaur Records.

I am the Co-Founder of the Salt Lake CAP Head Start Advisory Board, supporting hundreds of at-risk children whose families live below the poverty level. DAVIS COUNTY AUDITOR Curtis Koch For the last seven years, I have served as your Davis County Auditor. In this office, I am the Chief Financial Officer, Budget Officer, Director of Tax Administration, Purchasing Agent and Internal Auditor.

My education and experience uniquely qualify me for the position of County Auditor. Having earned my MBA and the Certified Government Finance Manager (CGFM) credential from the Association of Governmental Accountants, I not only have education and training in all areas of the office, I have experience.

COUNTY COMMISSIONER SEAT A Bob Stevenson Serving the past three years as a Davis County Commissioner has been one of the most enjoyable but challenging positions that I have ever had. Davis County Government now has a budget that is in excess of $200 million with over 900 full-time employees. The Commission is the literal management of the county.

Mark Shepherd I was born and raised in Utah, but for a time, left to serve a mission and start my career. When work returned me to Utah, my employer gave me the option of living anywhere along the Wasatch Front, we chose Davis County. Now, 26 years later, I have developed a deep love and appreciation for this County and its residents. It is that love that led me to get involved and give back.

I served as a member of the Clearfield Planning Commission, then a City Councilmember, and eventually Mayor.

Now, I’d like to serve you on the Davis County Commission.

Davis County needs a champion for transparency, a voice for fiscal responsibility and responsible infrastructure, an advocate for Hill Air Force base, and a guide for growth in the economy and in our cities. I believe the Davis County Commission needs a commissioner with experience.

The bill also set aside money for more counselors, said Ward. “These things add up to why there is an increase in adolescent suicide. It’s worth the time and effort to deal with that. The dollar amount got moved over to another similar bill so the idea still got funded.”

A state school safety office was also set up, he said. “Everyone was debating this or that system. We needed a central point with people who have expertise in education, expertise in mental health and law enforcement all working at the same time on school safety. Then they’re all familiar with the evidence of what works to make it safer for our students.”

There is the SafeUT app that is a warning system to identify anyone who might be violent or thinking about committing suicide, said Ward. “That didn’t come from this bill but it’s a piece of the things we do to make schools safer.”

Ward said there’s only so much that

can be done without damaging student learning. “It’s like COVID—we sent all the kids home and it affected their learning. We can choose to make our schools an armed prison but it makes it hard to use the building for what needs to be done.”

The playground is still sitting out there in the open, he said. “A school is just where you have a large number of students, teachers and community that come together.”

Although he ran HB120 Ward doesn’t have any new bills slated for the upcoming session. “We’d need to go back to the office that’s been working on it the last two and a half years,” he said.

“All the experts who have looked at studies and data and say ‘please tell me what we can do better and I’ll run it.’ Then I’d take it before the legislature and I think they’d give deference to it. I don’t know what policy would make it better. Just be kind to your neighbor.” l

Each week state officials are examining water levels in lakes and reservoirs, stream flows, and the dwindling snowpack.

Each week, the message remains the same. We need to conserve water.

The spring runoff has shown soil moisture decaying faster than usual, with 99 percent of Utah remaining in either severe or extreme drought levels – 71.87% in the extreme category. History shows that in the summer, the Great Salt Lake typically drops about two feet. With its current elevation of 4190.8, this would mean the lake could hit a historic low.

The statewide snow water equivalent, called SWE, which measures how much water would be in the snowpack if fully melted, peaked at 12 inches this year.

That’s 75% of a typical medium peak of 16 inches in a water year.

Eighteen of Utah’s largest 45 reservoirs are below 55% available capacity, and overall statewide storage is 63% of capacity. This time last year, reservoirs were about 67% of capacity. Of the 98 streams measured by the Utah Division of Water Resources, 47 are flowing below normal even with the spring runoff. Six are at record low conditions.

And as we have reported in recent issues of The Davis Journal, firefighters are preparing for an unusually dry and dangerous season. As of May 30, there have been 147 wildfires in Utah, 124 of them human-caused.

The National Interagency Fire Center Predictive Services projects in areas where drought is still prevalent in the higher terrain of Utah, fire potential is likely to increase to above normal if the snow melts off early by June. Increased fire potential is expected through June over the higher terrain of southern Utah into the Arizona Strip that have continued to be plagued by drought and well below normal snowpack. way over the southern two thirds of the Great Basin and will increase farther north in the next few weeks.

There’s an impact in a different but related way to this drought – and that’s to wildlife.

“Black bears are the only species of bear in Utah, and they live and roam across much of the state,” said Michael Sanchez, spokesperson for the Utah DWR. “The likelihood of conflicts with bears often increases during drought years when a bear’s normal food supply is decreased, leading them to seek alternate food sources.”

He said bears usually come out of hibernation in

March or April, but they were out earlier this year due to early warm weather and low snow conditions. Drought conditions impact plants and other root-like vegetation, which make up 90% of a black bear's diet, so DWR biologists think bears may be looking for alternate food sources in other areas this year. As a result, DWR is anticipating a possible increase in incidents this year of bears getting into people's garbage and scavenging for food.

Free concerts in the park to feature a wide range of music

lassically-trained pianist and music instructor Tong Liu invites the public to attend two free concerts in June. The owner of Master Keys Music Academy, Liu said the event will showcase the range and abilities of the academy’s students, who range in age from three to 83.

The first concert is Friday, June 10 from 5-7 p.m. at Bountiful City Park (400 N. 200 West). It will feature the school’s faculty performing on all types of instruments. The second concert on Saturday, June 11, also at the park, will highlight students from 10 a.m. until noon, and from 1-7 p.m. There will be food trucks on both days, plus games and hands-on music activities.

“It’s a super fun event. We want people to come out and have fun with us,” Liu said. “We’ll even have an instrument petting zoo. We’re going to display a whole bunch of instruments under the tent and then people can just experience the instruments.”

Students at Master Keys Music Academy (1468 N. Main St.) can learn to play almost any instrument, from cello and flute to guitar and ukulele. The

school also offers voice lessons and early childhood music classes.

“With music lessons, there are so many benefits. I think the most important is discipline,” Liu said. “It teaches the kids to have a routine and trains them to be persistent. It trains them to stick to a thing once they’ve committed to it.”

Liu earned a master’s degree at the University of Utah before opening her music academy. Her unique approach to teaching has attracted talented instructors and students. The school’s vigorous hiring practices help her hire the best music teachers in the area.

“I take job interviews very seriously.

All of our teachers have to go through two rounds of interviews and after they get through those they take a teachers training course with us,” she said. “We want to make sure our students are getting the best education they can find.”

Fireworks restrictions in place for Bountiful

Chief Dane Stone from the South Davis Metro Fire Service Area recommended the restrictions to the city council, which passed the ordinance on May 24. It prohibits the discharge of fireworks at all times in these areas of Bountiful: East of 400 East from Pages Lane to 500 South East of Orchard Drive from 500 South to the North Salt Lake border In other areas as designated by the agency Much of the city’s east side includes or borders with mountain-

ous, brush-covered or forest-covered areas that are at high risk for fire. This restriction applies to discharge of any Class “C” fireworks.

It also applies to campfires or other fires that are only allowed in an approved fire pit designed and installed by the U.S. Forest Service or the city.

No homemade or makeshift fire pits are allowed. The restrictions do not apply to residential structures or improved fire pits adjacent to a residential structure.

And those who sell fireworks that would be in violation to the ordinance could have them seized and destroyed, and the person selling or offering them for sale may have their license revoked.

Stone will likely make the same recommendation, or has already made it, to the other cities within the Fire Service Area, including Centerville, North Salt Lake, West Bountiful, Woods Cross, and Davis County. l

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi,’ ‘Heartstopper,’ and more streaming treats

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Disney+)

Set 10 years after the end of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith,” the series technically stars an understandably depressed Obi-Wan Kenobi. Its secret weapon, however, is a sassy, utterly delightful 10-year-old Leia Organa. I won’t spoil the circumstances of how they meet, or what happens next, but it’s more than enough adventure to fill an entire miniseries.

Ewan McGregor has clearly put a lot of thought into his portrayal of Obi-Wan, expertly portraying a tangle of emotions not explicitly stated in the script. Moses Ingram is formidable as a Sith bent on capturing Obi-Wan for the glory of the Empire. Jimmy Smits is delightful as always as a returning Bail Organa, while Joel Edgerton brings unexpected depth to Owen Lars. Vivien Lara Blair is a treat as

young Leia.

Though the series hasn’t finished airing (Disney+ puts up a new episode weekly), I’m excited for the rest of the journey. Clearly, this is a corner of the Star Wars universe worth revisiting.

Heartstopper (Netflix)

It’s rare to find a show that makes you happier just by watching it.

For a lot of people though, “Heartstopper” will be that show. Based on the graphic novels by Alice Oseman, it’s an incredibly sweet, warm-hearted story about two British boys falling in love.

Though it’s not always smooth sailing for either the duo or their friends, the mood is always so gentle and emotionally hopeful that the light never really dims.

The show follows Charlie (Joe Locke) a 14-year-old British schoolboy who was forcibly outed by classmates the year before. When he develops both a friendship and a crush on the straight

rugby player he sits next to in class, his friends think he’s heading for heartbreak.

Nick (Kit Connor), the straight rugby player in question, might be headed for something else entirely.

If you don’t like teenage shows or have a low sugar tolerance, “Heartstopper” won’t be magic. But if you need a little sweetness in your life, it might just be exactly what you’re looking for.

Prehistoric Planet (Apple TV+)

Most dinosaur documentaries tell their story through a combination of scientists and bones, with the occasional recreation sprinkled in to keep things interesting. BBC import “Prehistoric Planet,” however, does something far more magical. They treat dinosaurs the same way other documentaries treat lions – watch this gorgeous footage of them living their lives while David Attenborough explains what’s going on.

To do this, the show combines

everything paleontologists have learned about dinosaurs with a sprinkling of modern animal behavior and some gorgeous CGI. The seamless fusion of all the elements must have taken a ton of work, but the results feel so effortlessly natural they seem almost magical.

There’s even an element of danger, just like there always is in documentaries.

Each episode features a different environment, from the shoreline to forests, with a wide host of dinosaurs featured in each. Whether it’s lesser-known creatures or new facts about your old favorites, there’s always something more to learn.

The dinosaur-loving 12-year-old who still lives in your head will love every second of it.

Davis loses heartbreaker in 6A boys soccer title game

By Josh McFadden joshm@mycityjournals.com It was a storybook ending for one high school boys soccer team. Unfortunately for the Davis Darts, they were on the wrong side of the dramatic conclusion of the Class 6A state championship game.

Davis fell in the final seconds to Herriman of the 6A title contest May 25 by the score of 1-0. The 18th-seeded Mustangs scored the winning goal with two seconds left after neither team had found the back of the net for nearly 80 minutes of play.

It was a difficult way to narrowly miss out on celebrating a championship, especially for how strong the defense had been all game long for the Darts. Davis had trouble finding holes in Herriman’s defense and was held scoreless for just the fourth time in 18 games. Davis finished the season with an overall record of 13-5.

The Darts were a bit of a surprise entry of their own in reaching the title game. Davis placed third in Region 1 and snagged the No. 5 seed in the state tournament. In the semifinals, Davis took down Mountain Ridge 2-0, scoring a goal in each half. Jude Walker got the shutout in the goal, his seventh of the season. Teammates Elliot Pehrson and

Farmington

Another semifinals’ participant in the 6A tournament was also a local Region 1 school: Farmington. The Phoenix were fourth in Region 1 but caught fire

Like Davis, Farmington was a victim to Herriman’s late-game heroics.

In this semifinals contest, Herriman scored off a free kick in double overtime to pull off a 2-1 win. Both teams had scored in the second half to break a scoreless halftime tie. Cameron Bingham had Farmington’s goal, his second of the

season and 16th of his career.

The Phoenix went 13-6 this season, slightly better than last year’s 12-6 mark.

This season’s semi finals run was the deepest in Farmington’s short history.

Thirteen Phoenix players scored this season, with Jaden Peterson leading the way with 11 goals. Chandler Gunn paced the Phoenix with seven assists. l

DHS, BHS boys lacrosse teams among state’s final 4

he Davis High and Bountiful High boys lacrosse teams both reached the semifinals in the 6A and 5A respective classifications before losing just short of the championship games.

Davis

Davis lost to American Fork 11-6 May 25 in the semifinals of the 6A state tournament.

“Things didn’t go how we planned, but we battled for a full 48 minutes,” said head coach Dillon Yocom.

“Our defense came out and shut down a great offense.

We rode hard and had lots of turnovers on the ride, and cleared the ball great. We moved the ball well on offense and had great looks, but our shots just didn’t fall like they normally do. A big credit to the AF goalie for having his best game of the season with a save rate of 80%.”

The Darts were led by Eli Greenway who scored two goals, along with Rhett Rice, Emmet Rice, Nick Johnson and Ty Hoagland who also had a goal each.

“I can’t say enough how proud I am of this group of guys,” Yocom said. “Starting this year with only six seniors we didn’t know much about the team we would be. Halfway through the season one of our captains, and leading attackman, Mason Gagner, tore his ACL. We had multiple times when we were tested and had to overcome adversity and our guys gave it all they had every single minute. From practicing in the freezing cold, snow and rain to fighting back in games when we are down. We had injuries and the next guy up stepped in and performed great under pressure.”

The Darts had just lost one game entering the postseason and finished the year with a 17-2 mark.

“I’m so proud of our seniors and this team,” Yocom said. “Going undefeated in region and winning 17 straight games is a huge accomplishment. Davis High lacrosse is a family and we battle for each other.”

Bountiful

Bountiful lost to eventual 5A state champion Park City 20-3 May 25 in the semifinals of the 5A state tournament. The Redhawks were down 10-1 after the first quarter and scored just two goals the rest of the way.

Seniors Jamison Bain, Hayden Hanson and Cole Terry each had a goal in the loss that ended Bountiful’s 16-3 season.

“We came up a little short of our goal, but it was a

great season,” said head coach Peter Jordan, who credited his 24 seniors which included Bain, Hanson, Terry, Smith Alley, Dresden Bowman, Jamison Clegg, Grady Clemons, Nicolas Clemons, Marc Croft, Benjamin DeBarros, Truman Breinholt-Mitchell, Jaxon Demorest, Teagan Dougher, Tenoch Elggren, Wyatt Farr, Porter Hadley, Connor Hansen, Cameron Hess, Davis Hess, Seth Holtman, William Kilpack, Blake Pattison, Jonathan Scott and Declan Watt.

“We will miss our amazing seniors,” Jordan said.

“They have been great examples of how hard work pays off.” l

Farmington, Bountiful advance deep in high school baseball playoffs

hough neither team brought up championship trophies, the Farmington and Bountiful high school baseball teams had more than respectable showings at state.

Both squads reached bracket play and advanced, making it close to the title game.

Bountiful

Bountiful reached the semifinals as the No. 10 seed in Class 5A. The Redhawks were second in Region 5 but made it farther in the postseason than any league foe.

Last week, after taking down Orem 8-5, the Redhawks fell to second-seeded

Lehi 5-1. That pitted Bountiful against Orem in a rematch on May 25. The Redhawks had similar luck as they did two days before, winning 8-6. Bountiful outhit Orem 11-7 and scored seven runs in the fifth inning alone. Things got a little tense down the stretch, when leading 8-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bountiful gave up a pair of runs to the Tigers. But that’s all Orem managed, and the Redhawks moved on. Dallin Maxwell and Truman Duryea each hit doubles. Maxwell, Easton Aubuchon and Carson Webster each had two RBIs. Later in the day, Bountiful’s season came to an end against Lehi. Losing for the second time in two days to the eventual 5A champions, Bountiful gave the Pioneers all they could handle in a 3-2 loss. The Redhawks lost despite outhit-

ting the Pioneers 6-4. Bountiful was up 2-1 midway through the sixth inning but allowed two Lehi runs in the bottom of the sixth. Drew Beck hit a home run for Bountiful and drove in a run. Duryea had a double and an RBI in a losing cause.

The Redhawks finished the year with a 23-11 record.

Farmington

The Phoenix also made a strong, surprising run to the semifinals. Farmington was seeded ninth in Class 6A but scored an upset win in bracket play over Fremont on May 23. Then, after falling to American Fork 5-2 on May 24, Farmington got another shot at the No. 1 seed Region 1 champions from Fremont.

Farmington was more than up for the challenge.

On May 25, the Phoenix defeated

the Silver Wolves 5-3, giving Fremont just its third loss of the season. Farmington’s four runs in the fourth inning were key in the win. The Phoenix also held Fremont scoreless after the third inning.

Easton Wight hit a triple and drove in three runs. Teammates Caleb Takemori and Mason Cook each had an RBI. Farmington’s season ended later in the day with a rematch with American Fork. The Cavemen were too much in this semifinals matchup, scoring six runs in the second and fifth innings. Farmington had three hits to American Fork’s 10. In a losing effort, Jack Hansen had a double. Luke Workman and Wight both had RBIs. The Phoenix concluded a successful year with an overall mark of 22-11. l

BHS softball takes third at state

ountiful began the second week of the 5A state tournament with a 3-2 loss against Wasatch on May 24. The Redhawks were down 3-0 in the fourth inning before Malissa Turpin and Isabeau Hoff drove in runs, but came up just short of a comeback.

Immediately after their loss to Wasatch, Bountiful played Timpanogos and won 10-4 behind 2-for-3 plate appearances from Mylie Burnes and Claire Yates, who also drove in two runs each and scored two runs as well.

Eva Stoddard struck out nine Timberwolves batters in picking up the win on the mound. Ella Miller also hit a home run in the win.

Turpin, Katelyn Rodgers and Shiloh Johnson also recorded RBIs in the win.

The Redhawks again faced

Wasatch May 25, but this time beat the Wasps 9-4, getting out to a 6-2 lead early and then scoring three more runs to secure the win.

“We got revenge and eliminated them from the tournament,” said head coach Butch Latey.

Stoddard hit two home runs, driving in four runs, while also striking out four. Hoff also had two key hits and three RBIs. The win put Bountiful in the final four against eventual 5A state champion Spanish Fork May 25 for the second year in a row, with ace pitchers Avery Sapp and Stoddard again going head-to-head. The Dons were up 1-0 through five innings before they scored two late runs, ending the Redhawks season.

“It was a very well-played game by both teams,” Latey said. “Eva pitched every pitch of our four games in the tournament.”

The Region 5 champions finished the year with a 20-7 record.

Free Fishing Day in Utah is June 11

I

t’s a great tradition celebrated in nearly every state, and certainly an annual event Utahns love. It’s Free Fishing Day that will be held on Saturday, June 11 this year.

It allows anyone to fish at any public waterbody in Utah without a license. It makes for a great family activity and is the perfect time to introduce your kids (or your neighbors and friends) to fishing and get them outdoors. It’s a great day not only for beginning anglers to give fishing a try, but also fun for experienced anglers too.

“Because you don’t need a license to fish that day, it’s the perfect time to take someone with you and introduce them to the sport,” said Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Aquatics Section Assistant Chief Craig Walker. “Early June is one of the best times to fish in Utah. All of the fish in the state, both warm-water and cold-water species, are active and willing to bite this time of the year. And with this year’s drought, it will be better to go fishing earlier in the summer as well. While some waterbodies may be impacted by low water levels this year, the majority of the fishing in Utah will be great.”

If you are taking someone fishing for their first time, you can commemorate their first catch with a fun DWR certificate. You can print out the certificate at home and fill in the details to document the occasion. And while fishing itself is free, entrance fees to state parks and other areas will still apply.

Besides our Davis County fishing holes, such as Bountiful Lake, Farmington Pond, Kaysville Pond and Willard Bay, here are some other areas that aren’t too far from home where you can enjoy Free Fishing Day: East Canyon State Park (Morgan County): Offers rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, wiper, brown trout and kokanee salmon. Anglers should have success using a worm to fish for the trout, wiper or smallmouth bass.

Mantua Reservoir (Box Elder County): Offers bluegill, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, yellow perch and green sunfish.

The bluegill are typically near shore in June, so it’s good fishing for beginners.

Hyrum Lake State Park (Cache County): Offers rainbow trout, brown trout, yellow perch, largemouth bass and bluegill.

Echo State Park (Summit County): Offers rainbow trout, brown trout, yellow perch and smallmouth bass.

Rockport State Park (Summit County): Offers rainbow trout, brown trout, yellow perch and smallmouth bass.

Willow Pond (community pond in Salt Lake County): Offers bluegill, channel catfish, green sunfish and rainbow trout.

You don’t need a license to fish on June 12, but the other fishing rules in Utah will still be in effect. Make sure you know the catch limits and rules for the waterbody you are fishing. The rules are available in the 2021 Utah Fishing Guidebook on the state’s DWR website. And wherever you go fishing on Free Fishing Day, remember to recreate responsibly by packing out what you pack in and keeping the area free of trash. l

MEMORIAL DAY SALUTE The Color Guard from American Legion Post 27 gives a seven-gun three volley salute at the Farmington cemetery on Memorial Day. Similar events were held in various communities in Davis County including the Bountiful Veterans Park.

Mr. and Mrs. Willard C. Carr returned this morning from Minersville, Utah, where they had been to attend the funeral of Susan Roberts, 92, an aunt who took him when he was 11 days old as his mother died and reared him the same as she had the nine children of her own.

Overheated Economy Appears to be Cooling

H

eading into summer, it appears the overheated economy may be cooling down. Stock and bond markets are signaling that the economy is slowing.

Equity markets dropped in May as many companies reported lower earnings because of excess supplies and higher input prices from inflation. And consumer demand is expected to weaken as the Federal Reserve continues to raise interest rates.

While equity markets are considered forward-looking indicators that reflect future expectations, most economic data is backward-looking, reflecting what has happened in the past. Because of this, many indicators are giving mixed signals about how the economy is faring right now.

It’s too soon to tell whether inflation has peaked.

One positive sign is that growth in the Consumer Price Index decelerated slightly in April. The inflation rate dropped to 8.3% in April, down slightly from 8.5% the previous month. However, gas prices hit new nominal highs in May, food prices increased 9.4% over the last year, and housing price appreciation continued, albeit at a slower rate.

The question is not only whether inflation has hit a ceiling, but also where prices will be six months to a

year from now.

Even if inflation recedes over the next few months and levels out around 4-5%, the Fed would need to stay aggressive with interest rate increases to bring price growth closer to its target rate of 2%.

Inflation is a byproduct of a strong economy and high inflation is a sign that the economy is overheating. One of the biggest struggles of inflation is that it has greater burdens to those with lower incomes, which is why it is often referred to as “the most regressive tax.”

Lower income households particularly struggle when inflation is widespread, creating few alternatives to shift buying as prices increase. This struggle creates a hardship that impacts families’ basic standard of living.

Utah is at the center of the fastest growing region in the country where the effects of an overheating economy are being felt more acutely. Strong economic growth is driving population growth, wage growth, housing

demand and overall prices — a double-edged sword for the state. Inflation has shot up to 9.8% over the past year in the mountain region, which is the highest inflation in the country. Meanwhile, home prices have appreciated 29.4% in our state, exceeding 20.9% housing appreciation nationally.

Utah’s strong economy has also created a perilously tight labor market. The Beehive State’s unemployment rate hit a record low of 1.9% last month, tied with Nebraska as the lowest jobless rate in the country. Economists consider an unemployment of around 4-5% as an optimal level. If it is too high, there are too many people looking for scarce jobs. However, if the unemployment rate is too low, as we’re seeing now, there are not enough workers to meet the needs of employers. Nationally, there were 1.9 jobs for every unemployed worker in March, one of the highest levels on record. The lack of labor is constraining the ability of businesses to operate and grow, which leads to slower overall economic growth and can ultimately cause business failures.

Despite these challenges, Utah continues to be in a strong position if a recession happens. All 11 of Utah’s major industry groups posted year-over-year job gains, led by trade, transportation, utilities; leisure and hospitality; and construction. The state has added 5% employment since the beginning of the pandemic and remains one of the strongest economies in the country.l

What is a sea star and what is it not?

A starfish is not a fish at all. Many marine biologists want to change its name to a sea star, because most of them look like stars. Sea stars are echinoderms (eh-keen-oh-durmz)—animals that lack a back bone.

he ocean is full of amazing creatures, and one that is unique is the sea star or starfish. It is a sea creature, but it lives close to the shore.

Sometimes they are washed up on the beach or stranded in a tide pool, giving people a chance to see this mysterious creature up close.

Sea stars don’t have skeletons. Their spiny, tough skin gives them their shape and protects them.

One thing sea stars like to eat is clams.

Once one has wrapped its rays around a clam ______, its hundreds of tentacles ________ to the shell and hang onto it as it pulls and pulls until the shell opens.

As soon as it opens just a little, the sea star ________ its stomach out of its body and into the shell and __________ the clam. This can take an hour or two.

Sen. Wallace F. Bennett (R-Utah) was advised Tuesday that Bountiful’s hopes for better post office facilities probably won’t be realized in full for about two years. He was told the present space “should suffice for the remainder of the present lease term which expires June 15, 1954.”

The North Salt Lake Police Department is sporting in style in their new

police car. Delivered on May 28, 1962, the Mercury Monterey police car replaces the city’s 1960 Buick.

Mayor Allred explained this new expenditure will be absorbed into the 1962-63 fiscal budget.

1982

Davis County mayors have completed their first effort at dividing up block grants to various cities, zeroing in on those where water, housing and firefighting facilities were needed. Among those getting grants – $72,000 for the Davis Housing Authority for rehabilitation projects; $245,000 to Clinton for water storage tanks and lines; $132,000 to Kaysville for a culinary water line; $140,000 for firefighting equipment in South Davis and $18,000 to Centerville for a water improvement project.

Ileen Wayment Brown passed away May 30, 2022.

Ileen was born Oct. 7, 1942 in Ogden UT, the daughter of Arnold Hodson Wayment and Maud Hewitt Wayment.

She Married Joel G. Brown on June 14, 1963 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Ileen loved her family more than all else. She was known as caring, kind and classy. She graduated from Davis High School and attended Weber State University. Ileen was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved the Savior.

She enjoyed spending as much time as possible at her beloved Bountiful Temple. Ileen and Joel were successful in their professional careers and used that success to support many people and causes throughout their lives.

Ileen is survived by her children: Kent (Sharon) Brown, Natalie (Adam) Belnap; Grandchildren: Lancaster (Ali) Brown, Brodrick Brown, Cooper (Makenna) Brown, Kimi Belnap and Bree Belnap; Great grandchildren: Whitley Ileen Brown, Mabry Brown, Caplan Brown and Kayson Brown. Ileen is survived by her sister Lois Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband Joel,

her parents and her brother Sherman Wayment.

There will be a visitation Friday June 3, from 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main, Bountiful, UT. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Saturday June 4, from 9-10 a.m. Interment services will follow at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery in Bountiful, UT. It’s not often that actors land their first role in a multibilliondollar movie franchise, but Kiowa Gordon is certainly an exception to the rule.

Launched into fame with his role as werewolf Embry Call in the film adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, he has since appeared in more than a dozen films and TV series.

Gordon next stars in the hotly anticipated thriller series “Dark Winds,” premiering Sunday, June 12, on AMC and AMC+.

Born March 25, 1990, in Berlin, Germany, to American parents, Gordon moved to the U.S. when he was 2 years old and would grow up in Arizona, at one time attending the same Phoenix church as “Twilight” author Meyer. She suggested he audition for a role in the second film in the franchise, “New Moon” (2009), for which he landed the role of a werewolf and close friend of Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner, “Valentine’s Day,” 2010).

He went on to reprise the role in sequels “Eclipse” (2010) and “Breaking Dawn: Part 1” (2011). To date, the film series has grossed over $3.4 billion worldwide, in addition to launching Gordon into stardom alongside the film’s leading actors, Kristen Stewart (“Spencer,” 2021) and Robert Pattinson (“The Lighthouse,” 2019).

Shortly after wrapping up his role in the Twilight Saga, Gordon played tough guy Johnny Beck in “The Lesser Blessed” (2012), a drama about a Native American teen struggling to find his place in the world while reconciling events from his past.

Much of Gordon’s work is centered on the Native American experience, and he held prominent roles in films such as “Drunktown’s Finest” (2015), about a group of young people’s struggles on a reservation, and “Through Black Spruce” (2018), detailing the disappearance of a young Cree woman in Toronto.

Meet the Candidates night goes online

T

he Davis County League of Women Voters will be hosting Meet the Candidates events over the next few weeks to give voters the opportunity to learn more about those who are running for office.

Meet the Candidates will be a little different this year with all events online. Each candidate will be given a few minutes to talk about their background and why they are running for office. Candidates also have the chance to answer questions submitted by the community. Residents can submit questions ahead of time at www. lwvutah.org/davis-county. The

questions will be given to candidates before the event so they can decide how to best answer them.

The events will be held over two weeks to cover all the Davis County races. The series kicked off on June 2 and runs through June 8.

Voters can access the events and listen to them later if they want more information on a candidate or if they missed one. Meet the Candidates will be available at www. lwvutah.org/davis-county.
