Davis Tech partners with Red Barn to give men the skills needed to better themselves

FARMINGTON—It wasn’t the typical graduation ceremony with cap and gown, but it was just as significant for the men at Red Barn Academy who recently finished a culinary or welding program through Davis Technical College. Red Barn is a “two-year life-skills academy that reinvents lives broken from addiction and crime by teaching honesty, accountability and integrity in a farm setting.”

“As Red Barn was getting started, Mike Haws (director) reached out to Davis Tech about having students take some training,” said Marcie Valdez, Foundation Director Davis Technical College. “The program at Red Barn is so intensive that the men are not in a place to come to us. So Business

and Economic Development created culinary and welding courses that fit the schedule here at Red Barn.”

The men in the culinary program prepared the meal for the graduation dinner held May 11. “It was fun for them to show off their skills,” she said.

“The tricky piece was how to fund it.

The Davis Tech Foundation Board has provided funding for the program for three years.”

After they’ve spent two years in the Red Barn program, the goal is for them to finish here and the third year choose to attend Davis Tech while staying at Red Barn, said Valdez. “It opens doors and builds their confidence to see opportunities for them.

Summerfest begins its 35th season on June 6 at Bountiful Town Square

O

ne of Davis County’s most anticipated celebrations will return starting June 6. Summerfest, Bountiful Davis Art Center’s popular outdoor celebration of art, tradition and cultural diversity, begins its 35th consecutive year on four straight Monday evenings at Bountiful Town Square, 54 East 100 South. All events are free for the public to attend.

As always, Summerfest is a celebration of artists and performers from around the world. BDAC executive director Alysa Revell said “Summerfest: Conversations in Culture” will feature live performances, talks and more where music, dance, food and visual arts are highlighted. This year’s fest will focus on Native American, Andian, Greek and Chinese cultures.

“We will use the Bountiful Town Square outdoor amphitheater stage, and the audience members can bring their own blankets or chairs,” Revell said.

Food trucks will open at 6:30 p.m., and performances will begin at 7 p.m., she said. She added that the popular Children’s Art Yard will provide free make-and-take art projects related to the cultures being spotlighted. There will be craft demonstrations and visual art booths as well again this year –

Officer honored for stopping wrong-way driver Centerville Police Officer Alex Farnes receives the Medal of Valor from Centerville Police Chief Paul Child (right) and Lt. Allen Ackerson during a recent city council meeting.

Farnes was recognized for her heroic actions when she stopped a wrong-way driver on I-15.

“It all happened pretty quickly,” said Farnes.

“They’d closed the onramp and I had gotten out of my car.

I saw him coming and he attempted to hit me head on.

He swerved and hit the side of my patrol car. I had to act quickly. There was so much traffic I didn’t want anyone to get hit. It was scary and fast. There was not a lot of time to process it until he was out of his car and I was out of mine.”

Fire damages apartment in Centerville

South Davis Metro Fire responded to an apartment fire in Centerville last Friday afternoon and quickly brought the blaze under control. All occupants in the apartment were evacuated safely but several of them suffered smoke inhalation. No one was transported to the hospital.

Motorcyclist falls 30 feet near the ‘B’

South Davis Metro Fire, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office, Centerville Police Department, Davis County Search and Rescue, and Intermountain Life Flight were called out over the weekend to assist a motorcyclist that fell approximately 30 feet off a cliff on Skyline Drive near the “B.” According to SDMF, the victim was transported to the hospital and was expected to recover quickly.

Local man receives Citizen Award of Merit

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office presented Clayton Sunley with the 2021 Citizen Award of Merit last week for assisting the Davis Metro Narcotic Strike Force in September while they were serving a search warrant near the Smith’s Marketplace in West Point. Agents got into a foot pursuit with one of the wanted suspects. “The suspect ran northbound through the Smith’s parking lot and gas pump station,” a DCSO social media post said. “While agents were yelling, ‘police, stop,’ Clayton heard the commotion and saw the suspect running in his direction. Clayton stepped away from pumping gasoline and tackled the suspect.

The agents immediately restrained the suspect, and during a search of the suspect’s person, found a loaded gun and drugs. Clayton’s actions were a service to the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force.

Thank you for assisting police in protecting the community.”

Free Child Identification Kits

The West Bountiful Police Department is offering free Child Identification Kits. “The ID Kit allows parents to collect specific information by easily recording the physical characteristics and fingerprints of their children on identification cards that are then kept at home by the parent or guardian,” according to the WBPD Facebook page. The kit includes a fingerprint card, medical information section, DNA section and applicator. “If ever needed, this ID Kit will give authorities vital information to assist their efforts to locate a missing child,” the post said.

nternational travel is more costly and, due to the U.S. insistence that Americans get a 24-hour negative COVID test before boarding the airplane coming back, a somewhat apprehensive venture. However, travel still offers the best glimpse of other cultures and an educational sweep through modern and ancient history.

After two weeks in southern England, I found little separating Americans from the Brits. Forget the blood pudding, unflavorful pastys, and afternoon tea. Most of the country’s residents look much like us, carrying Starbucks cups, energy drinks, and Burger King sacks.

And it was the same with political issues. The newspapers were full of accounts of skyrocketing inflation, the difficulty in hiring workers (in one city, two out of three taxi companies had closed due to driver shortages), and the unapproachable cost of housing (only one in

Sounds like America? And like us, the British are taking it out on their politicians. The only difference is the target: a majority of Americans are blaming the liberals (those nasty Democrats) while British voters did exactly the opposite by voting out the ruling conservatives, electing the left-leaning Labour Party.

We are not the only country experiencing rising prices.

Inflation in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany is about the same as it is here and some of the Baltic countries are seeing 1319% inflation. So much for Joe Biden causing all the problems!

There are other similarities in attitudes between the U.S. and England.

For instance, political analysts often say that Americans will vote for a candidate with whom they would enjoy drinking a beer. Americans don’t like stuffy!

Similarly, the most up-and-coming political newcomer in England is a liberal woman who resonates with voters. As one newspaper columnist summed up, “She (Angela Raynor) has a slightly naughty side that appeals to the public. You want to go for a drink with her. The worst thing in politics is being boring. While some candidates are like a drink of water, Angela is a cocktail with an umbrella sticking out.”

And here is another attitude the Brits share with Americans: the idea that their country is the best!

A government minister recently said, “We have the very best people in this county and the best medical system. Much better than the French have, much better than the Belgians have, much better than Americans have. After all, we are a much better country than every single one of them!”

I disagree with him, but there is nothing wrong with enthusiastic pride.

With that comes the energy and willpower to conquer any challenge. Like England, Americans also have the resolve to meet the economic challenges.

Our major obstacle is to eliminate the extreme partisanship making it difficult to rationally view proposals, actions, and consequences.

If that happens, I might even be tempted to taste a spoonful of that blood pudding.

Different faiths and community come together to serve those in need

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com NORTH SALT LAKE—The Ladies of Charity Center of Hope has been feeding families for many years and now they’re going to provide clothes for those in need in their new Thrift Shop. Fr. Andrzej Skrzypiec, Pastor of St. Olaf church gave the blessing at its opening on May 11.

“We’ve expanded the building,” said Bobby Earl, President of the organization Ladies of Charity. “We purchased the building behind and we store food there.

The food used to be where the clothes are. With the extra space we were able to open a thrift store. We’ll just do clothes for now and get our feet wet to see what it takes to run a thrift store.”

The building was funded by donations, she said.

“Performance Automotive Bountiful is paying our rent for a year.”

“Everything in the thrift shop has been donated,” said Earl. “Mostly by the St. Olaf parish. All clothes need to be clean and folded.There are no washing facilities. People have come to the door and want clothes, now we can tell them yes.”

Ladies of Charity was started in 1617 in Paris, France, Earl said. “Saint Vincent dePaul started us. They were serving families in need of help in France. It’s still

dents come to Davis Tech after they finish their program.”

There are nine currently enrolled at Davis Tech and three have graduated, she said. “It’s proven to be a great partnership for these men.”

Davis Tech has an onsite welding trailer with six welding booths and stateof-the-art equipment for the students to train on. Elliott Hedgepath is the instructor. “I love coming here,” he said. “They work hard to finish it (the course). They do what is expected of them. They do a good job.”

There is also a fully equipped kitchen for culinary students to learn on. “They had really big shoes to fill,” said Chef Neil Bridenstine, who designed the program.

“That first class there was really no plan, we just went for it. It was fun. I got close to the guys.”

The current class works at Sticky Bird, the Red Barn restaurant, he said.

“They are paying it forward using the skills they learned in class so it goes full circle.”

It’s cool in class to see when the light bulb comes on, Bridenstine said. “That

For several years the LDS church has brought milk, cheese and eggs, she said. “They go to the Bishops’ Storehouse and get it every week. It’s absolutely wonderful.”

“The church has donated many, many pounds of food,” said John Hollingshead, director Davis County Utah Communication Council. “We raised cash for their new fridge. We accelerated help the last year and a half.

The Layton Storehouse donates regularly, so does the Bountiful Food Pantry and there are also private donations. We love to help these ladies.”

The center serves those in North Salt Lake, West Bountiful, Woods Cross and the Rose Park and Glendale areas of Salt Lake, said Earl. “We also have people coming from Fruit Heights, Farmington and other areas.”

The Ladies of Charity Center of Hope is located at 74 South Orchard Drive in North Salt Lake. Hours are Mondays from 6 – 7 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

“What’s on my mind is the notion of gratitude,” said Davis Tech President Darin Brush at the graduation. “I’m touched by the short conversations I’ve had while having a meal together. Through all of the interactions I’ve had over the years you have demonstrated the highest integrity as an extension of Red Barn. We do what we do at Davis Tech because of you.”

Davis Tech is fortunate to have Elliott and Chef Neil, he said. “After you finish at Davis Tech when the time is right, you’ll have the best stamp of approval to go out into the world. You are now a part of Davis Tech. You’ll be with us for this journey.”

Justice graduated from the welding program last August and is working as a property manager at Red Barn. “This was one more added feeling of accomplishment,” he said. “You have all this guilt and shame. You’re so low. But they’re willing to take a chance on guys like that and help us to step into greatness. It built my self confidence and awareness of who I am and where I’m trying to go.”

BOUNTIFUL—Starla Stanley learned some valuable lessons as a 17-year-old huddled in a foxhole with another woman who hated everything she stood for. She came out of the experience realizing that not everything is as it seems.

“In the Army there’s a buddy system,” said Stanley, who was the keynote speaker at a recent Davis Chamber Women in Business Luncheon.”It’s your role to save their life and it’s theirs to save yours. I was a blonde, young 17-year-old girl and Joyce Benjamin was the leader of the pack. I thought, ‘I’m not messing with her.’”

Every other word was the F word, Stanley said. “She was smoking and you had to get permission from her to do anything. When the sergeant gave out buddy assignments, he said, ‘Miller you’re with Benjamin.’”

Stanley said she was shaking in her boots. “I would have cried. I thought ‘she’s going to kill me. I’m not from her world.’ She had the choice to go to jail or go into the Army. Now she’s my buddy in the foxhole covering me.”

Then something happened that shaped the way Stanley thought about others. “I talked to Joyce Benjamin,” she said. “I got to know Joyce Benjamin. She had an incredible story and we became dear friends.”

School district responds to report of bullying at Sand Springs

LAYTON—The Davis School District and school officials at Sand Springs Elementary conducted an investigation last week into allegations that a 9-year-old boy was bullied in the school lunchroom. The boy’s father alleged that other students made his son eat food off of the cafeteria floor.

“The Davis School District and Sand Springs Elementary School view the situation and circumstances surrounding it as very serious and troubling,” a statement from the district said. “District and school officials spent multiple hours investigating the allegations raised, worked with all parties involved and reached significant consequences for the offending parties.”

investigative team was formed in December 2021 to look into allegations that a fifth grade student at Foxboro Elementary was bullied because of her race and disabilities. The girl’s mother alleged the bullying led to the 10-year-old’s suicide in November.

“We are aware bullying occurs at times in schools and Davis School District is working tirelessly to eliminate all forms of bullying, harassment and discrimination in all of our schools, as evidenced by our ‘See Something, Say Something’ mantra and ongoing ‘No More, Not Here’ campaign,” the statement said. “Both efforts have resulted in significant changes in school climate and improved school safety.”

The district also said school security cameras help to verify such incidents and allows them to respond quickly and thoroughly.l

Stanley developed this concept when she won Mrs. Utah in 1999, then went on to become Mrs. America and then in 2000 was crowned Mrs. World. “Too often we confuse our roles with our identity,” she said. “I can take away all these crowns and achievements, it doesn’t change who I am. Know what you do is not who you are.”

Instead of criticizing, celebrate others, said Stanley.

“Sometimes we analyze to criticize. Look at other people and think ‘what can I do for you?’ That’s analyze to celebrate. If you’re criticizing others, check yourself. Where are you lacking? Have the peace to know who you are.”

Be able to communicate with others, she said. “Ask ‘what do you need from me? How can I help?’ Choose to make the best out of our lives and make the best out of other’s lives.”

Stanley asked the women in the audience to stand if they had experienced any of the things she listed such as “I struggle being a mom” or “marriage is hard for me.”

“Girls, look around,” she said. “These are amazing women who lift other people and yet they feel less than. Get to the core of who you are and memorize it.”

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ outflies the original

T

he original “Top Gun” is a brash, sun-drenched movie about fast planes, cool sunglasses, and rugged masculine individualism. Somehow, it’s also a movie about how grief can shatter you so deeply you’re fundamentally changed as a person.

The amazing thing about “Top Gun: Maverick,” opening this weekend, is that it navigates this strange dichotomy even better than the original. It dials back the brashness, takes a more thorough look at the grief, and makes the planes go even faster. Together, it makes for a thrill ride with a surprising amount of heart.

and continuing to get himself in trouble.

When he’s sent back to Top Gun to teach a group of younger pilots how to survive an upcoming mission, he’s forced to confront his past and figure out the flight path to the future he wants.

Though it’s less brash, in a lot of ways this movie is actually more fun than the original. Cruise is still cocky, but he’s mellowed out just enough to be more likable. They give more time to the rest of the cast, who are also largely likable, and the central romance has some real chemistry. There’s real plot mixed in with the action to make things more interesting, and the cliches are more nuanced. There are even a few genuinely laugh-out-loud moments to top it all off.

If you’re here for the flying, you’re also not going to be disappointed. Like in the first movie, all the aerial scenes

feature real planes flown by real pilots.

This time they’re flying considerably faster, pulling off tricks I hadn’t known were actually possible. The mission at the end feels incredibly dangerous even to those of us who have no idea what all the technical lingo means, becoming only more so to those who do.

There’s also some real depth here.

Though the ending of the original “Top Gun” seemed to wrap up his grief in a neat little bow, the sequel makes it clear that didn’t last. He’s still caught up in the echoes of that grief to this day, deeply enough that it’s impacted his relationship with Goose’s son Rooster (Miles Teller).

Cruise isn’t the most nuanced actor these days, but here his performance gives full weight to all the shades of grief, fear and longing his character experiences.

Cruise and Teller have a particularly

good, emotional dynamic between them.

Though the roots of the conflict don’t get a great deal of discussion in the script, the actors make you feel everything that isn’t said. Almost the entire impact of the ending rest on their shoulders, and together they carry it off beautifully.

If you loved the first “Top Gun,” or even liked it, you need to see this movie.

Even if you didn’t like the original, however, you might want to give “Top Gun: Maverick”a try. It soars a lot higher.

A whole lot of learning takes place during physics day at Lagoon

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—Robotics, Sky Coaster egg drop and a screaming fast roller coaster ride transformed Lagoon as thousands of middle and high schoolers flooded the park for physics day. Students tested their knowledge measuring the g-force of Colossus, battling robotics and throwing padded eggs off the Sky Coaster to see which one didn’t break.

On top of the learning the event is just plain fun.

“It’s so much more fun to see stuff they talked about in class in real life,” said J.R. Dennison, a professor in the physics department at Utah State University who runs physics day. “Any topic covered in science there are a thousand examples of it here at the amusement park. It’s nice to talk about it but heck it’s a lot more fun to talk about a coaster when you’re screaming down the track.

It’s exactly the same.”

Physics day started in 1989. “It’s the 31st year,” he said. “The last two years we didn’t have the event. When I first came to USU as a faculty member another STEM professor talked me into a summer workshop for high school teachers. After we wrapped up the session, he heard about an event at an amusement park in California. He said, ‘J.R. how are you going to do this?’ I should have run screaming from the room.”

Lagoon has been an incredible partner all these years, said Dennison. “The event has been going around amusement parks for about 40 years or so. I think we may run the biggest one in the country.

Most of the stuff that has come up has been filtered through us. Some work, others not so much.”

In the last five or six years 9,000 – 11,000 students have attended physics day, he said. “This year has been 30 percent higher than we’ve seen before.

About 40 percent are high schoolers and 55 percent are middle schoolers. There are also a few elementary schools.”

Physics day gives students the practical application, said Dennison. “It’s exciting for teachers when they can get their interest peaked. There are so many fun things to talk about. For kids who don’t participate (in class) it’s a carrot that if they’ve done well they get to go to

A master teacher at Box Elder told me that he announced over the intercom that the physics students get to go to Lagoon, Dennison said. “He had the whole school signing up. Box Elder has hired a third physics teacher 10 to 15 years later because the program has grown so much.”

‘Coats for Kids’ Car Show set for June 17-18

T

he 24th annual Bountiful Rotary “Coats for Kids” Car show is scheduled for June 17 and 18 in Bountiful. The Rotary kicks off the event every year with a luncheon in May to thank our Major Sponsors, Bountiful City, law enforcement, the Jeep Posse and many others who help make the show a huge success.

This year we were honored to have Mayor Kendalyn Harris share with us her experience with helping at the show last year and how she looks forward to helping this year. The best part of the luncheon is hearing from teachers and principals from the elementary schools that receive vouchers.

This year Erin Webster, advocate for Bountiful and Adelaide Elementary schools, and Christian Westergard, counselor at Adelaide Elementary, spoke to us.

Erin and Christian told us that 116 vouchers were distributed to children in need in Adelaide and 40 at Bountiful Elementary.

UTA offers riders discounted day passes to Air and Space show HILL AIR FORCE BASE—The popular Warriors Over the Wasatch Air and Space Show is back after being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. More than 500,000 spectators are expected to attend the event on June 25-26. To help visitors navigate the crowds UTA is offering enhanced FrontRunner and shuttle bus service to the show.

Event organizers anticipate heavy traffic and limited parking options so patrons are encouraged to utilize public transportation to get to and from the show.

In an effort to accommodate riders, UTA is offering a discounted $5 HAFB Airshow Day Pass or a $15 Group Day Pass (up to four people) on the UTA GoRide app to ride FrontRunner, TRAX, streetcar or bus to the show.

Visitors can ride the FrontRunner train to the Clearfield Station, where shuttle buses will arrive every 15 minutes to take them to the HAFB show

igh school lacrosse season is drawing to a close, with Davis and Bountiful boys the only teams still involved in state tournaments that will conclude this week (after our Monday press deadline). Here’s how teams fared.

Davis

Second-seeded Davis defeated Copper Hills 19-5 in the second round of the 6A state tournament May 19 after a first-round bye.

“We played a great game from start to finish,” said head coach Dillon Yocom. “Our defense was flying around making plays and getting turnovers. Our offense played great team ball and moved the ball well. Rhett Rice led us with six goals offensively and Ashton Wood did a great job initiating and stacking up the assists.”

Also contributing offensively for the Darts were Connor Johnson (three goals, one assist), Emmett Rice (three goals, one assist), Nick Johnson (two goals, three assists), Carson Smolka (two goals, one assist), Tyler Hoagland (one goal), Jeffrey Sumsion (one goal), Brek Jensen (one goal), Ashton Wood (three assists) and Parker Romney (one assist).

In the quarterfinals against Lone Peak May 22, Davis won 16-15.

“Lone Peak is a great team and really made us earn everything we got,” Yocom said. “Our boys did a great job, playing physical when they needed to. It wasn’t our best game, but we got the win and are excited to move on to the semifinals. Our face off guys Nick Johnson, Eli Greenway and Jacob Faerber did a great job and gave us a huge advantage. We played good team offense and were once again led by Rhett Rice with a huge game.”

Rice’s six goals and four assists led the Darts while Nick Johnson (four goals), Connor Johnson (two goals, two assists), Eli Greenway (two goals, one assist), Emmett Rice (one goal, one assist), Jake Dowdle (one goal) and Ben Roylance (one assist) also provided offense.

Davis moved on to the 6A semifinals against American Fork May 25.

Third-seeded Bountiful defeated Lehi 20-3 in the second round of the 5A state tournament following a bye.

Hayden Hanson’s eight goals and two assists along with Teagan Dougher’s five assists led the Redhawks to the win. Also contributing offensively were Jamison Bain (four goals), Cole Terry (two goals, two assists), Isaac Stout (two goals, one assist), Grady Clemons (one

goal), Porter Hadley (one goal), Smith Alley (one goal), Tate Terry (one goal), Declan Watt (two assists) and Ryland Hewitt (one assist).

In the quarterfinals May 21, Bountiful beat Wasatch 13-6. After a 3-3 tie at the end of the first quarter, the Redhawks took the lead by half at 6-3 and held the Wasps to three second-half goals to put the game away.

Hanson again led in scoring with seven goals and two assists while Dougher (two goals, two assists), Hewitt (one goal, one assist), Bain (one goal), Hadley (one goal) and Cole Terry (one goal) also contributed to the win.

Bountiful’s 5A state tournament run continues into the semifinal round against Park City May 25.

Viewmont defeated Jordan 11-5 in the first round of the 5A state tournament May 17. The Vikings were up 7-1 at the break and finished off the Beetdiggers with four second-half goals.

Bountiful softball advances at state; Viewmont, Farmington’s seasons end

ountiful swept East in the Super Regionals – outscoring the Leopards 18-0 over two games to advance to bracket play in the 5A state tournament.

The Redhawks season continued this week with games played after our Monday press deadline.

Bountiful

Following a bye in the Regionals round of the 5A state tournament, Bountiful faced East in the Super Regionals. On May 19, the fourth-seeded Redhawks defeated the Leopards 8-0, going up 2-0 early and putting more runs on the board as the game went on while shutting East out.

Athena Tongaonevai, Shiloh Johnson, Katelyn Rodgers and Claire Yates also drove in runs in the win.

In Game 2 against East May 20, Bountiful won again in shutout fashion 10-0, going up by six runs after three innings and adding four more to close out the game.

Stoddard threw another gem from the mound with nine strikeouts in another two-hitter outing Tongaonevai got things started offensively for the Redhawks with a two-run home run in the first inning with Ella Miller (three RBIs), Isabeau Huff (two), Yates (one) and Turpin (one) also contributing.

“The ten runs scored were done by every girl contributing with a hit,” Latey said.

Fourth-seeded Bountiful faced Wasatch May 24 in bracket play in the final week of the state tournament.

Viewmont

After a series sweep over Maple Mountain in the Regional round of the 5A state tournament, 15th-seeded Viewmont lost to third-seeded Uintah 21-13 May 19.

gave up 14 runs to the Utes within the first three innings – while scoring six. Viewmont continued to find ways to put runs on the board, but Uintah scored in every inning to take the win.

“We hit the ball pretty well, but we had some very uncharacteristic errors,” said head coach Stacie Toney.

“We’re excited to get back at it again with Uintah. These girls aren’t done.”

Kennedy Embrey led the Vikings offense with five RBIs along with Oakley Sovic, Karli Dickerson and Jena Eggett (two RBIs) and Anna Moore (one).

In Game 2 against Uintah May 20, the Vikings lost 11-1. Viewmont was down 10-0 after three innings and

Sydni Steed’s RBI in the final inning helped the Vikings avoid the shutout.

Viewmont ended its season with a 16-12 record.

Farmington

Following a bye in the Regional round of the 6A state tournament, seventh-seeded Farmington lost to tenth-seeded Weber 4-3 May 19. The Phoenix squad scored first and last but the Warriors pulled out the narrow win.

Lexi Crowley had a solo HR and Kate Hansen and Nev Carrasquel drove in the other runs for Farmington.

In the second game against Weber May 20, the Phoenix lost 6-0 to end a 15-9 season.l

Seasons end for girls lacrosse teams

he second season of girls high school lacrosse ended with all five local teams losing in the state playoffs.

Here’s a recap of last week’s play

Davis

Following a bye in the first round of the 6A state tournament, fourth-seeded Davis defeated Bingham 15-12 in the second round May 19.

The teams were knotted up at 6-all at halftime before the Darts added nine second-half goals.

“We came storming out in the second half, winning the draws and quickly building a five goal lead,” said head coach Makenzie Hekking. “Give credit to Bingham for persevering and coming back to within two goals with just over three minutes left in the game. We won the next draw and were able to possess the ball on offense and drain some of the time off the clock before Tallulah Raser scored the final goal of the game with 46 seconds left to lift us to a three-goal lead.”

Ava Bair led the Davis offense with four goals as well as Raser (three goals, one assist), Macie Wood (three goals), Mackenize Coleman (two goals, one assist), Olivia Lifferth (one goal, one assist), Kaydence Johnson (one goal) and Kerri Norton (one goal).

In the quarterfinals against Syracuse May 21, the Darts lost 9-5 after being down 5-3 at the half and not able to come back.

The loss ended Davis’ season with a 14-4 record.

Bountiful

Bountiful defeated Cedar Valley 13-6 in the first round of the 5A state tournament May 17.

Emily Stewart led the Redhawks with four goals while Megan Youngberg (three goals), Sunny Price-Huish (two), Naomi Brice (two), Amelie Urie (one) and Leah Moon (one) also found the net.

“Our offense did a great job of working together to have multiple scores,” said head coach Olivia Cook.

“Over the course of the game our team caused 14 turnovers, which is really impressive.”

Against Jordan in the second round May 19, Bountiful lost 18-6.

The Redhawks were down 12-3 by half and couldn’t mount a comeback in the loss that ended their season.

“This team has worked so hard for two years together,” Cook said.

“Almost all of them were brand new last year so to have come so far in two years is such a feat. They have honestly been the best teammates to each other, being kind, learning to communicate, acknowledging their faults and trying to be better. They have learned to love lacrosse and have started a culture of hard-working, inclusive athletes on this team. Their peers are interested in lacrosse because of them and our team will only keep growing.”

Woods Cross

Woods Cross beat Spanish Fork 19-2 in the first round of the 5A state tournament May 17, jumping out to an 11-1 edge at the break before they cruised to the win.

Skylar Midgley had five goals to lead the Wildcats with Samantha Atwood (four goals), Maggie Preece (two goals, two assists), Ella Tyson (three goals), Ella Matthews (two goals), Ella Holland (one goal), Alexa Gardner (one goal) and Eliza Sonntag (one goal) also producing offensively.

In the second round against Lehi May 19, Woods Cross won 12-6, closing out a 7-2 halftime lead with five more goals in the second half.

Atwood’s five goals were tops offensively for the Wildcats while Preece (three goals, one assist), Midgley (two goals), Gardner (one goal) and Sadie Allred (one goal) were also on the board in the win.

Facing top-seeded Park City in the quarterfinals May 21, Woods Cross lost 20-0 to end a 13-4 season.

Farmington

The tenth-seeded Farmington squad received a first-round bye in the 6A state tournament and then faced Corner Canyon, losing 14-7 May 19.

The Phoenix team finished the year with a 10-7 record.

Viewmont

Viewmont’s season ended in the first round of the 5A state tournament with an 18-5 loss to Highland May 17. The Vikings were down 14-2 by halftime and managed just three more

“Highland played a good game,” said head coach Dana Fisher. “They had a few players that exploited our defensive weaknesses.”

Viewmont’s season began with nine losses before they turned things around and went 5-3 the rest of the way.

“We had a growth season with many new players to the game this year,” Fisher said. “The girls bonded and enjoyed their time together.” l

Redhawks making impressive run through Class 5A state tournament

hat’s a tournament without an underdog team making a run?

In the case of the Class 5A state baseball tournament, there were a handful of surprise teams to make it to the later rounds – with Bountiful among them. The 10th-seeded Redhawks scored minor upsets over Woods Cross in the Super Regionals and over Orem in bracket play to reach the quarterfinals. Other high-seeded teams to advance included 13th-seeded Wasatch and 12th-seeded Salem Hills.

Last week, the Redhawks first beat the 7th-seeded Wildcats in back-to-back games of a best-of-three series May 19 and 20. Game one was a low-scoring affair, with Bountiful prevailing 3-1. But the Redhawks surged to an 18-8 victory the following day.

In this clinching win, Bountiful piled up 12 runs in the fourth inning

alone and collected 16 hits. In defeat, Woods Cross’ Blake Stanger, Isaac Canelon and Taylor Ayala each had home runs, with Stanger driving in three runs. However, Truman Duryea had two home runs and a double for Bountiful, while TJ Dahlke added a home run in the victory. Drew Bowles and Kaisan Averett each had two doubles. Eliminating Woods Cross was especially satisfying, as the Wildcats had won Region 5 over the Redhawks.

Bountiful then beat Orem 8-5 on Monday. The Redhawks got off to a hot start and held off the ninth-seeded Tiger. Bountiful opened the game with five runs in the first inning and added a pair more in the third inning.

It was 7-0 Bountiful as the bottom of the fifth inning began. Orem made a comeback attempt, but a Bountiful run in the seventh inning clinched the win. Duryea was the winning pitcher, as Bountiful gave up just four hits.

Averett was a huge reason his team prevailed, as he had two doubles and five RBIs.

Athletes of the Week

The Davis Journal is once again honoring our Athletes of the Week. Winners were chosen by our Journal sportswriters with input from local coaches.

Our Male Athlete of the Week is Ethan Peterson, Farmington track. He won three gold medals and a silver at the 6A state track championships.

Lehi was next the following day. Bountiful suffered its first loss of the tournament, falling 5-1 to the second-seeded Pioneers. All five Lehi runs were in the third inning, and Bountiful scored in the second. Drew Beck hit a triple and drove in the Redhawks’ only run. Carson Webster had a double.

Bountiful faced Orem in a rematch on Wednesday, after our press deadline. A win there would pit the Redhawks against Lehi again. A loss would end their season.

Farmington

The Phoenix posted a huge upset over region rival Fremont in bracket play on Monday. This occurred after the ninth-seeded Phoenix got past eighth-seeded West Jordan in the super regionals. In the best-of-threeseries, Farmington only needed two games to move on, as it won 5-2 and 6-4.

The victory over Fremont gave the Silver Wolves just their second loss of the season. More notably, Fre-

Salmon netted three goals and had an assist with other offense coming from Delgado (one goal, one assist), Browning (one goal) and Parley Shupe (one assist).

All five American Fork runs came in the fourth inning, and Farmington didn’t score until its last at-bat. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, they couldn’t force extra innings. Day hit a double and drove in a run.

Next up for Farmington was a tough task: another shot at Fremont on Wednesday. The winner of that game would play later in the day against American Fork. We’ll have final results in next week’s Davis Journal. l

Farmington boys take second in state 6A track

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com PROVO—The Farmington Phoenix came home with a silver trophy for a second-place finish at the state 6A Track and Field Championships that concluded Saturday at BYU. Farmington used its strength in its distance running events to finish with 76 team points. Corner Canyon won the title with 116 points.

Senior Ethan Peterson finished his prep career with three gold medals for wins in the 1600 meters, 800 meters and as a member of the 3200 meter relay team, plus a second place in the 3200 meters. Other medalists for the Phoenix boys included Ryan Bennett, Spencer Bradshaw, Isaac Halverson, Dayton Runyan, Matthew Neuenschwander, and Trevor Nelson. Farmington has won the past three boys state cross country titles with its strong running contingent.

Davis had four medalists among the 6A boys, with Tyler Spencer 7th in the 3200, Jared Steinicke 8th in the 110 meter hurdles, Slater Hancock 4th in long jump and Evan Forbush 3rd in shot put.

In 6A girls, Farmington finished 9th in the team standings. Senior Marianne Barber had two strong second-place finishes in her specialties – the 100 and 200 meters. Davis had individual medalists in Shandrey Allman, 4th in the 100 meter hurdles; Loryn Helgesen, 4th in long jump; and Lauryn Hall, 4th in javelin.

A boys basketball camp taught by the current DHS boys basketball coaching staff and current team members is scheduled for K-12th graders. It will be held May 31 through June 3. Davis boys soccer catches fire, reaches state finals

T

he Davis boys soccer team didn’t win its region, but it closed in on a much bigger prize in the postseason.

The Darts placed third in Region 1 with an 8-4 record behind Weber and Syracuse. Still, Davis grabbed the No. 5 seed and secured a first-round bye in the Class 6A tournament. It opened tournament action at home May 17 against fellow Region 1 foe Fremont. Davis defeated Fremont 3-1 back on March 16; however, Fremont got revenge with a 2-0 victory on April 29. When it mattered most, the Darts got the best of the Silver Wolves in the playoffs with a 3-1 win.

The Darts scored twice in the first half and were up by two goals at the break. Talon Meyer, Nash Jensen and Ashton Bond registered goals for the Darts.

Davis then moved on to quarterfinals with a home game against Syracuse, another region opponent. Syracuse

had also earned a win over Davis during the regular season, prevailing 2-1 on April 22. Davis won the other meeting in a shootout on March 30. In the playoffs, Davis advanced with a critical 1-0 win.

This pitted the Darts against Mountain Ridge on Monday at Juan Diego High School. The Darts were ready for this one, winning their 13th victory of the season in a 2-0 win. Davis scored in both halves, with Andrew Donigan scoring just eight minutes into the game.

It was 1-0 for nearly the rest of the way until Elliot Pehrson added a goal in the last seconds. Jude Walker got the shutout in goal, his seventh of the season.

Davis advanced to the 6A finals on Wednesday, after our press deadline.

This is the first title appearance for the Darts since 2012 when they defeated Brighton 1-0.

Farmington The Phoenix also reached the semifinals, which was an impressive feat considering they were fourth in Region 1 during the regular season.

Farmington was the sixth-seeded team and had a first-round bye. Then, it had a pair of one-goal wins in the second round and quarterfinals, respectively. First was a 2-1 win over Riverton of Region 3. Luke Smith and Owen Nichols each scored in the first half to give the Phoenix a big cushion. Chandler Gunn and Chase Ashby assisted on the goals.

The quarterfinals, playing on the road at third-seeded Bingham, Farmington pulled off a 1-0 upset. Jaden Peterson scored on a Gunn assist in the first half, which was all the Phoenix needed.

Farmington’s season came to an end in the semifinals in a 2-1 double-overtime loss to upstart Herriman at Juan Diego High School. Herriman scored the clinching goal in the second overtime. For Farmington, Cameron Bingham scored the lone goal.

Farmington’s season ended at 13-6 overall.

Woods Cross, Viewmont, Bountiful

In Class 5A, local teams had short showings in the postseason, with only Bountiful picking up a victory.

The Redhawks were the 32nd-seeded team in the 5A tournament after going 4-12 during the regular season. But Bountiful played one of its best games of the season when it counted most. In the first round on May 14, the Redhawks shut out Jordan 2-0 on the road.

It was Bountiful’s fourth shutout of the year. Jackson Wersland and Max Barlow scored in the second half for Bountiful, with Parker Hayford not allowing a score from his goalie position.

Bountiful then gave top-seeded Provo all it could handle in the second round. Provo entered the contest with just two losses, but the Redhawks were up 1-0 at halftime thanks to a goal by Javier Moreno. But Provo responded with a pair of second-half goals to end Bountiful’s season at 5-13 overall.

he Woods Cross boys tennis team finished third at the 5A state tournament at Liberty Park May 19, 21. No. 1 singles player Jack Hinkle lost in the finals while Brayden Allen, at No. 3 singles, along with the No. 2 doubles team of Andrew Harrison and Spencer Thomson reached the semifinal round to lead the Wildcats.

Hinkle beat Park City’s Dominic Jamrich 6-3, 6-4 in the first round, Viewmont’s Nate Tullis 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round and Jordan’s Charlie Buxton 6-1, 6-2 in the semis to reach the finals where he lost to Brighton’s Hardy Owen 6-1, 6-1.

Allen defeated Wasatch’s Brady Peery 6-3, 6-0 in the first round and Park City’s Coen Woolley 7-6 (7), 6-2 in the second before losing to Skyline’s Tai Jensen 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Harrison/Thomson beat Springville’s Bridger Barton/James Lowe 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and Park City’s Felix Schlegel/Jake Furnell 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and then lost to eventual champion Kyle Rasmussen/Sam Stewart, of Skyline, 6-3, 6-1.

Bountiful and Viewmont tied for 15th place at the state tournament.

The Redhawks’ Zach Eyring, playing at No. 2 singles, reached the second round – where he lost to Skyline’s Dean Weaver 6-3, 6-2 – with a first-round win over Uintah’s Stockton Ross 6-0, 6-1. No. 1 singles player Harrison Pearce and the No. 2 doubles team of Thane Thompson and Lincoln Spangenberg also qualified for the tournament bracket play but lost their first round matchups.

The Vikings’ No. 1 singles player Nate Tullis beat Pearce 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round before losing to Hinkle in the second round. Also making first round appearances were Kyle and Curtis Robinson, at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively, and the No. 2 doubles pairing of Adam Jones and Evan Zierenberg but they were unable to advance. l

gden Friends of Acoustic Music has announced this year’s “tweeners” lineup, expressing excitement after a challenging selection process with so many quality candidates who applied to take the main stage at The 14th Annual Ogden Music Festival.

It will be held June 3 – 5 at Fort Buenaventura.

One set of performers each year are the “Tweeners,” young performers who each play three or four songs and come from a list of applicants who auditioned for 11 spots in the festival.

“Word has spread to more people so we received more applications and inquiries than ever before and the selection process is more competitive,” says festival co-director Reba Nissen.

“We like to showcase young performers, celebrate diversity, and provide the opportunity to as many artists as

possible. We don't present the same artist twice in consecutive years.”

This year’s lineup (in order of festival appearance) includes musicians from Logan to Salt Lake: Paddy Teglia, Highline Drifters, Mark Dee, Damien Midknight, Christian Scheller, Hank & Charlie Hansen, Michelle Moonshine, Jackie Rae Daniels, Mike Iverson, Wood Carver, and Backyard Revival. OFOAM’s lineup this year includes bluegrass legend Sam Bush, Amy Helm, The Travelin’ McCourys, A.J. Lee & Blue Summit, Carolyn Wonderland, Flor de Toloache and Stillhouse Junkies, among others.

ountiful and North Salt Lake cities, along with Davis County, were among recipients of grant funding from The Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity’s Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant (UORG) program.

The office will award $11 million in matching grants to 85 outdoor recreation infrastructure projects across Utah, totaling more than $90 million in project value – a 9:1 investment of state dollars.

The UORG receives funding from the state transient room tax, and, in 2022, the Utah Legislature supplemented the grant fund with an additional $5 million in onetime funding.

Bountiful received $500,000 for its Trails Master Plan, a project being designed and coordinated between Bountiful City, Davis County, the USFS and IMBA to expand Bountiful’s multi-use trail system in the foothills and throughout the city by over 50 miles. It was part of the Regional Asset Tier.

Along with infrastructure for water recreation, snowmobiling, climbing, and other recreational activities, this year’s grant funding will help restore nearly 170 miles of existing multi-use trails and help build about 200 miles of multi-use trails. Bountiful City will use the funds to expand its trail network massively.

“Bountiful’s new trail system will more than double the miles of multi-use trails in the area and will seamlessly integrate with the Bonneville Shoreline Trail expansion to make south Davis County’s

foothills one of the most sought-after destination spots for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and ATV use along the Wasatch Front,” according to the Bountiful Trails Advisory Committee.

As part of the Recreation Restoration Infrastructure grant program, North Salt Lake will receive $57,750 for the Porter’s Landing Concrete Boat Ramp, which will replace the ramp at the boat takeout on the Jordan River with a hard-surfaced (concrete) boat ramp.

In that same category, Davis County will receive $150,000 for the Denver & Rio Grande Rail Trail Resurfacing Project. The D&RG Rail Trail is an 18 mile paved section of the larger Golden Spoke Regional Trail system which stretches from Ogden Canyon to Provo Canyon.

The trail is now 12 years old and in need of joint and crack seal followed by a seal coat to help preserve its life.

“Outdoor recreation is one of the leading contributors to Utah’s high quality of life. It’s great to see outdoor recreation as a priority for leaders at the state level and in our local communities,” said Pitt Grewe, director of the Division of Outdoor Recreation. “It’s a privilege to support communities willing to invest in outdoor recreation infrastructure.”

This year, 23 of Utah’s 29 counties received project funding, and 26 counties have received funding since the grant began in 2015. Over half of this year’s outdoor recreation grant funding is going to rural Utah counties. Since the grant’s 2015 inception, over 60% of the grant funding has gone to rural Utah in the amount of $34.7 million.l

Jay Welk retires after 40 years in education

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—As an educator for 40 years, Jay Welk understands the importance of helping kids succeed. Welk has been the CTE (Career and Technical Education) director for the last five years and spearheaded the effort to develop the new Davis Catalyst Center where students have the opportunity to work directly with industry partners. It opened in January. Now as Welk retires he is turning over the reins to a new director Brian Hunt.

“Brian will bring his own flavor to CTE,” said Welk. “He’s a forward thinker, not boxed in with what education should be. He’ll see CTE elevated higher and better.”

When Welk came in as CTE director he said they completely changed the leadership model. “Everything had been centralized at the district level. We decentralized it and moved it to the high schools to coor-

dinators who taught in those areas.”

The number one reason they switched to the schools is that’s where the rubber hits the road, said Welk. “In administration we’re somewhat detached from the classrooms.

Teachers are in it every day. We needed somebody who was teaching that content and felt that really made the difference.”

Welk said he had no CTE experience when he came on. “I had some help but had to research programs on my own. I visited different districts in the state to see their leadership/ budget model. We changed both.

The budget all came from the central office accounting but we changed that model and gave the same base amount to each school.”

CTE is funded by enrollment, he said. “Pre pandemic we had the highest CTE enrollment in the state. With increased enrollment over the last three years we were able to increase revenue overall by $8 million and saved over $4 million.”

Welk said they knew the Catalyst

Center was coming so they held onto the money and used CTE revenues to purchase equipment.

“We asked all of the schools to do a strategic audit of their programs,” he said. “They used that data to look at all the things that were being offered to see if they were tied to industry needs and whether we were teaching kids as they’re coming out of high school to be ready for post secondary school and careers.”

Catalyst has 53 industry partners, said Welk. “Industry likes it because it’s project based. It’s such a different instruction model. Students get technical skills by doing projects for real companies. We wanted to make it relevant to what they’re learning.”

Before developing the Catalyst Center, Welk visited other schools in different states. “They were mostly centered in the Houston area,” he said. “I saw what you see here. We took a little bit from everyone but I haven’t seen an audio/visual like we have.”

Welk said he worked with the

district facilities people to design the center to look more like industry instead of the typical school. “We wanted to add a third dimension where the building fit that a little bit so that when students leave here it’s not a new feel for them when they get into industry.”

There are CTE programs in all of the high schools. “We want students to take the foundational courses at their high school and then if they want to do a capstone project on Lagoon or Antelope Island they can come to Catalyst,” said Welk. “But we want to take that model out to the schools and build a mini Catalyst at all of those.”

Education is a great environment to work in, he said. “I know people are there who want to help young people improve their station in life.

No amount of money makes up for when you get feedback from kids who say you made a difference in their lives. If I had it to do all over again – I would do it all over again.” l

Francis Ernest Wanner, 86, of Bountiful, Utah, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2022, participating in what had become one of his favorite activities: going to the gym with his beloved Cecile.

Frank was born July 10, 1935, in Bismarck, ND to Ann (Hoffart) and Fred Wanner, the second of six children.

He graduated from Marquette High School in Yakima, Washington. After high school, Frank joined the Air Force where he served with distinction for four years in Fairbanks, Alaska. Frank took full advantage of his GI Bill and used it to attend North Dakota State University and graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. Upon graduation, Frank took a job as an engineer with Hercules in Salt Lake City.

Shortly thereafter, the Department of Defense recruited Frank to work at Hill AFB where he worked on key defense initiatives until his retirement in 1991.

It was in Salt Lake City where Frank met Cecile (Potochnik) of Rock Springs, WY. Frank and Cecile were married in 1966 and spent the last 55 years together. They moved to Bountiful, and raised their three children: Ann, Tim and Francine. Frank was a devout Catholic and active parishioner throughout his life. For the last 49 years he attended St. Olaf in Bountiful where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and on the Diocesan Committee for the Utah Diocese. After his faith, and likely because of it, Frank was totally devoted to his family as a husband, father and eventually a grandfather.

He was proud of his service to the nation and instilled in his family a true commitment to service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and gave his family a few scares on thin ice (literally).

After he retired, Frank loved to travel, and he and Cecile had many tales of their experiences all over the world. He especially loved traveling to see family in Wyoming, Washington, Massachusetts, Minnesota and across the nation. Frank loved hiking in the mountains, walking his family’s many dogs and as previously mentioned, exercising in the gym with Cecile.

Frank is survived by his wife Cecile Wanner; his sister Kathleen (Norman) Macleod; children Ann (Rob) Holder of Stillwater, MN; Tim Wanner of Woods Cross, UT; Francine (Michael) Galvin of Cohasset, MA and grandchildren William Holder, Kathleen (Victoria) Holder, Emma Holder, Morgan Galvin, Elizabeth Holder, Maxwell Galvin and Harrison Galvin.

Talented, charismatic and confident, actor and producer Johnny Sibilly has it all. From his be-ginnings taking acting classes in New York City to starring in the upcoming re-imagination of “Queer as Folk,” airing Thursday, June 9, on Peacock, Sibilly seems poised to take Hollywood by storm.

Born Sept. 5, 1987, in New York City, Sibilly grew up in a military family and had lived in Germany, Texas and Miami before moving back to New York as an adult to pursue his acting career.

He came into his own following an LGBTQ-focused acting class that showed him he didn’t have to portray stereotypically masculine roles in order to make it in the entertainment industry, nor did he have to be typecast as an LGBTQ+ character.

“For me, I always say if I never played a straight character ever again, I would be perfectly fine with that,” he told Out.com. “It would be an honor to only play queer characters forever.”

After landing small parts as young Nicholas Turturro (“The Longest Yard,” 2005) in “Celebrity Ghost Stories” and an unnamed drag queen in an episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” Sibilly was cast in a three-episode arc in Ryan Murphy’s (“Glee”) award-winning drama “Pose.” Sibilly played Costas Perez, the AIDS-stricken boyfriend of Pray Tell (Billy Porter, “American Horror Story”).
