BOUNTIFUL—Summer is around the corner, and with it comes fireworks, campfires, barbecues – and wildfires. South Davis Metro Fire crews are gearing up to be ready if a wildfire hits, but they also need the public’s cooperation to help prevent fires in the first place.

“We encourage people to attend city sponsored fireworks events,” said SDMF Deputy Chief Greg Stewart. “We’d rather they don’t light fireworks but they’re going to, so be sure to submerge firecrackers in water overnight. We often see dumpster fires the next day.”

being dangerous, more the big aerials that go into the sky, he said. “But a lot of the ones on the ground get kicked into the grass inadvertently and suddenly the grass is on fire and moves to your neighbor’s house. We’d like to mitigate it before it becomes something big.”

The majority of fires are human caused, said Stewart.

“We’re our own worst enemy. Make sure your barbecue ashes are out. We had some scouts who dumped charcoal briquettes in the landscape by a bush next to a church. They didn’t think about it because they thought they were out and it started a fire.”

It’s usually the smaller things that people don’t think are a big deal, he said. “Make sure your campfire is out.

Douse it with water until it’s cold to the touch. We recommend stirring it up with a shovel to make sure the water has penetrated all the way down.”

That’s what caused the Gun Range Fire, Stewart said.

“It had not been put out. They just left it. The wind kicked

up and blew it down into homes. I was the incident commander on that. It was the longest two days of my life. It was a miracle that we only lost two homes instead of losing neighborhoods that night. It was unbelievable.”

Stewart encourages residents living on the bench to create a defensible space area to defend their home from wildfires. “Remove brush and leaves at least 100 feet from your home,” he said. “Don’t have any landscape like that right against your deck or home. That can become fuel. It’s like a wick and the fire is going to go right into the house.”

The same for rain gutters, said Stewart. “Clear out leaves and debris. A fire starts throwing embers and lights the fuels in them. Sometimes you see extra firewood piled against the deck. A fire starts in the brush and now the deck and house are too well involved for us to put out.”

Defensible space is the big one, he said. “Everybody likes the natural landscape but a fire can affect your house or your neighbor’s.”

Crews start preparing for the fire season in January, said Stewart. “We check equipment to make sure we’re

safe out there to fight a wildfire. Personal equipment like fire resistant clothing, glasses and head lamps. It’s all about prep season right now.”

The SDMF uses a brush truck to fight wildland fires, he said. “It can get into places where large trucks can’t get into.”

Firefighters are also required to pass a physical fitness test each year, Stewart said. “They have to walk three miles wearing a 45 pound pack in 45 minutes. We want to make sure they’re fit to respond. Everybody’s cross trained and certified.”

Medicals don’t stop during fire season, he said. “We have to keep moving and responding to all those emergencies. It can be taxing with the increased call volume.”

People don’t think it can happen here, said Stewart. “It most definitely can happen here. We want people to be safe, that’s the primary goal. We can replace stuff – we can’t replace people.” l

Car crashes into Kaysville bank A Wells Fargo Bank in Kaysville sustained significant damage after a car crashed into the building Monday night.

Kaysville Fire crews responded with the Kaysville Police Department just after 8:30 p.m. to the bank located at 250 N. Main St. Police said the vehicle was traveling north on Main Street and failed to negotiate a turn, leaving the road and hitting the building. Paramedics evaluated the occupants of the vehicle and they were released at the scene.

Driver exceeds 100 mph on I-15 A driver going 122 mph on I-15 in a 70 mph zone was stopped by the Utah Highway Patrol Tuesday morning near the 200 North exit in Kaysville. According to a new law that went into effect on May 4 to help combat the high speeds in Utah, someone speeding in excess of 105 mph can now be cited with Reckless Driving.

This change makes traveling at 105 mph or higher a misdemeanor when it was previously an infraction.

“We hope this new law is taken seriously and brings down the bad driving behaviors we have been seeing,” a UHP social media post said. “The 100 Deadliest Days is right around the corner, let’s get our speeds down across the state and arrive alive.”

Semi, train hit downed power line on I-15 CENTERVILLE—A semi truck crashed and overturned on I-15 Monday morning after hitting a downed power line, shutting down the freeway in both directions.

Just after 4 a.m. the Utah Highway Patrol received reports of a power line hanging down near Parrish Lane. A semi hauling a container struck the power line, flipping the trailer and causing fuel and oil leaks. The truck hit the center median sending concrete debris into the northbound lanes. The debris damaged multiple vehicles, authorities said. A Union Pacific train then struck the downed power line.

South Davis Metro Fire hazmat teams worked with UHP and UDOT to clean up the spill. The driver of the semi truck was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

saw an old friend last month, and after chatting about senior moments and former acquaintances, and hip replacements – typical “old fogie” conversations – his outlook on life was pleasant and optimistic in a time of rage and frustration.

“It’s a whole different world today than when we were getting together 25 years ago,” he said. “A lot of what we see today is depressing. But then again, like I tell my son and daughter, we’ve seen a lot worse and yet we bounced right back.”

My old friend Chuck is not a scholar. He didn’t attend college. He worked in the retail industry almost all of his life, never being boosted into senior management. He and his wife had their arguments over the years, but they’ve been married 58 years. Chuck is now 80; in other words, he’s been around the block a few times, getting a full view of our country’s

Inflation? We’ve experiencing it now, but it was far worse some 40 years ago when, adjusted for the value of the dollar, the price of gasoline was significantly higher than today. There was a time when Saudi Arabia cut off the oil supplies, and motorists had to wait in hourlong lines to even pump a gallon of gasoline. And as for today’s current rising interest rates, my very first purchase of a tax-free municipal bond offered me a bloated 18% return – more than six times what a similar bond pays today.

We are currently seeing an increase in violent crime and downgraded relationships between races. However, less than 50 years ago violent riots torched some of the country’s major cities, destroying houses, neighborhoods, and shopping areas.

The Putin-led war in Ukraine has left us shaking our heads, with many people concerned that a nuclear war is just around the corner. In the 1950s, however, the Cold War loomed as the precursor to a nuclear nightmare, and I recall bomb shelters and “sheltering-in-place” exercises in our public schools.

Yes, today we have controversial squabbles over gay and transgender individuals. But it wasn’t long ago that interracial dating was scorned (with interracial marriage outlawed), and police often raided bars and jailed gay men and women for simply holding hands.

As for the current battle over generally non-existent Critical Race Theory, I remember the John Birch Society claiming that our school libraries were filled with “communist” textbooks. And for those politicians hollering that society needs to protect people from sexuality, it wasn’t long ago that a married couple couldn’t be shown sharing the same bed in the “I Love Lucy” television series and Elvis Presley was criticized by preachers for swiveling his hips.

The “culture wars” have existed since I was born. And as Chuck says, “Hey, we survived all that and moved on. We probably will again. But as for that aching hip…Man, it sure is not fun growing old.”

Dear Editor: Today, I noticed in West Bountiful a family has turned their whole backyard into a bomb shelter. Sixty years earlier, an elementary student teacher had me crawl under our desks, put my hands over my head as the duck and cover practice for a nuclear bomb.

Today, we have advanced much in technology – however, as Putin, Kim Il Jong (the ugly little fat boy with the bad haircut from North Korea), stupid Trump

Compensation package includes teacher salary increase

FARMINGTON—Teachers in the Davis School District will see a base salary increase of 5 % as well as a onetime, two-installment payment for a total 2 % of their salary as part of a compensation package approved by the Board of Education in a special meeting Tuesday night.

The package also includes a onetime payment for 32 additional prep hours for a 11.47 percent total compensation increase for veteran teachers. It also provides for additional steps and lanes based on education levels and years of service for eligible employees.

The district and the Davis Education Association (DEA) have been negotiating the terms of the package for two and a half months prior to approval.

A negotiated agreement between the district and Davis Education Support Professionals (DESP) was also approved by the board that includes a 5 % base salary increase and additional steps for a total compensation increase of 8.8 %.

In addition, for the first time in many years, insurance costs will not increase and there will be no change in current insurance plans.

Since the district is now self-insured and was able to go through Navitus Health Solutions for prescriptions,

millions of dollars in expenses have been saved, Davis School District Business Administrator Craig Carter told the board. “We’ve done a nice job of cost containment.”

The certified package also includes TSSA (Teacher and Student Success Act) funds allocated by the Utah Legislature.

“The overall goal of the TSSA funds is to award money to educators going above contract hours in an effort to improve the education of students,” a district release said. The funds can also be used for school supplies.

Other details include: • Teacher professional days continue as they currently exist.

• The funding for the 32 hours of additional prep times is from the Utah Legislature.

• Funding for 10 additional health aides and 10 additional family service workers – five of which will be in the Teen Centers.

• An additional school administrator stipend for nighttime supervision of student activities.

• Beginning teachers, starting in the 2023 fiscal year, will receive a starting wage of $51,600.

The general membership of the DEA and DESP will now consider the compensation package for ratification. l

Bountiful Food Pantry reopens its ‘Market’

I

n March of 2020, as the nation watched the doors of businesses close due to the outbreak of COVID-19, one local lifeline for many families had to make changes as well. That’s when the Bountiful Food Pantry shut down its Market, the area that looks and feels much like a supermarket where patrons can pick and choose their own food items.

Now, that option has returned, as staff members of the Pantry joined with some of its Board of Directors at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday morning. Executive Director Rebekah Anderson said she was “immensely proud of the generous volunteers who, for the past two years, did the stocking and shopping for clients and delivered food to their vehicles” while the market was closed. “Although clients could not come into the building to pick their own items, we did not go a single day without giving food to everyone in need.”

The Market became part of the Pantry’s operation in 2015 after an extensive remodel added the space along with some much-needed offices. Jordan Gingrich, the director of services at the Pantry, recalled those early days of the pandemic.

“We had a really scary time where we had to evaluate whether we could continue to give out food and how to do it safely,” she said. “We knew our priority was to feed people, so we quickly developed a model of how we could deliver food through the back door. Those first few days of March were scary for everyone. We’re happy we could alleviate some of that fear and provide them with some of the necessities they needed. We’re so glad to finally be able to reopen our market and have clients be able to choose their food options.”

Gingrich praised the volunteers who helped make it happen, especially at a time when the number of volunteers – normally about 200 – was reduced to one-fifth that number.

“Everybody was hustling, and they did that with a smile – they were happy to help,” she said. “I’m so happy to be a part of this organization. I started as a volunteer going out on the grocery rescue trucks.

That’s when I became attached to the pantry and its mission.”

Bountiful Mayor Kendalyn Harris spoke at the ceremony, saying she is very grateful for the organization.

“It’s so amazing to me to think about

what you do here day in and day out,” she said. “We all have things, seen or unseen, where we need help. We live in a community where we want to help each other.

That’s what the pantry does. This is such a vital part of our community. It’s a great step today that people can come in and choose for themselves.”

“The market allows people to feel a little sense of normalcy,” Anderson said.

“One of the things that we offer here is not just food, its humanity. An overwhelming number of our volunteers said they’ve missed having people in the building, missed talking to our clients. They missed that interaction with people in our community.”

Anderson also thanked the many community partners, from local farmers and supermarket owners to other groups who’ve helped with programs such as the Pantry Packs that provide food for children in need. From a program that started distributing 155 packs a week in three schools, 3,100 Pantry Packs are now distributed a week to 61 schools.

There is a food drive this Saturday (May 14) conducted with postal workers.

Most homes should have had bags left on doorsteps that residents can fill with food

and place back on those doorsteps. Postal workers will collect those bags on Saturday and the donated food will go to the Pantry.

Airmen deployed to Germany return to HAFB HILL AIR FORCE—There were hugs all around Monday as the active duty pilots, maintainers and support personnel from the 388th and Reserve 419th Fighter wings returned to Hill after deploying the F-35A Lightning II to Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany.

In February, the 34th Fighter Squadron and 34th Fighter Generation Squadron deployed to Spangdahlem in an effort to enhance NATO’s collective defense posture, bolster readiness and increase air integration capabilities with Allied and Partner nations during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a release said.

“We deployed rapidly and provided cutting-edge air power to defend NATO’s eastern flank,” Col. Craig Andrie, 388th FW commander said. “We're proud of the work everyone put in to support that mission and we’re glad to have them back home. Now they’ll all get some much deserved time off.”

The squadron flew in Lithuania, Germany, Romania, Estonia and Bulgaria including air patrol missions along NATO borders with Ukraine. The Vermont Air National Guard’s 158th FW

also flies the F-35A and recently arrived in Spangdahlem to continue that mission.

“There’s nothing better than seeing our Airmen return home after a successful deployment, especially one as important as this,” Col. Matthew Fritz, 419th Fighter Wing commander said.

“Hill’s team of active duty and Reserve personnel did a fantastic job alongside our NATO allies and partners. Now we’ll continue to do what we do best – train day in and day out to ensure the F-35A and our people are ready to respond to the next fight wherever and whenever.”

Hundreds of family members waited anxiously in a large aircraft hangar at Hill on Monday to see their wives, husbands, moms, dads and children. In a way, every family member serves on any deployment, Andrie said.

“We talk a lot about the capabilities and strength of our military members,” he said. “Our family members back at home have to be just as strong in a lot of ways. We could not do this without them.”

New concept of exercise builds bone density, strengthens muscles

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com SYRACUSE—On average, the body loses 1% of its bone density a year as it ages. To address that concern, a new method called OsteoStrong has been developed to increase bone density, strengthen muscles and improve balance by applying compression on the bone. A husband and wife team, along with their brother and sisterin-law have opened a gym in Davis County based on the concept, the first of its kind in Utah.

“It’s based on Dr. Julius Wolff’s law that states if you put force on a bone it can increase bone density,” said co-owner Stacie Olsen. “Dr. John Jaquish developed the equipment because his mother had osteoporosis.

She started using this method and it reversed her osteoporosis.”

Olsen said her brother-in-law and co-owner Joe Olsen first heard about OsteoStrong through Tony Robbins, a nationally recognized coach, author and motivational speaker. “He thought if this really works it was going to change the world. He said it would be awesome to help people in Utah so he came to us and we all opened this together.”

Patients go to their doctor and get a DEXA scan that shows the density of their bones, she said. “That’s what they use to make the diagnosis of osteoporosis. Then they can come into our center. Many people have improved 2% to 19% in bone density. That’s a tremendous adaptive response.”

By applying compression on the bone it triggers the brain to stimulate the osteoblast cells that build bone and make them denser and stronger, said Olsen. “The equipment is also triggering muscle development and strength.

It also strengthens tendons and ligaments for joint stability.”

Sessions are once a week for 20 minutes, she said. “It’s super quick and convenient. The sessions start with whole body vibration. It’s stretching to wake up the muscles to get them ready for what we call a trigger event.”

First they go to the Upper Growth Trigger machine, said Stacie Olsen.

“This works your arms and collarbone.

Next is the Lower Growth Trigger. This works your legs and hips. The third machine is the Core Growth Trigger that works on the core muscles.”

The last machine is the Postural Growth Trigger, she said. “This works the spine, legs, the whole body from neck to toes. It really helps with the spine. A lot of members have low density in their spine.”

Then they finish with the whole body vibration, Stacie Olsen said.

“That’s where we work on balance using healing modalities such as pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) and also compression therapy to help increase bone density. It’s kind of our recovery after doing the session.”

Stacie Olsen said it takes 4.2 times someone’s body weight to build bone either through gymnastics or powerlifting. “We’re able to put clients on the machines to emulate that type of impact without jumping off of a four foot

platform or from that height and get that 4.2 times body weight. We emulate that impact. It’s a safe way of getting high impact compression but you don’t get the impact that’s damaging to the joints.”

It’s meant for all ages and ability levels, she said. “It helps a 14-year-old athlete who wants to get stronger and better at sports up to people in their 90s to decrease joint pain and bone density.

It also helps lower A1C for diabetes.”

OsteoStrong has been open for two years. “I love seeing our members’ improvement,” Stacie Olsen said. “It’s fun to share in their excitement of improving their bone density and their quality of life.”

Parents: protect your kids against online predators

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com CENTERVILLE—Back in the day parents could let their kids leave in the morning to play and wouldn’t see them again until dinnertime. Parenting is much more complicated today with the internet and social media. Kids are playing online games with strangers, using Snapchat and posting on Facebook and Instagram.

As part of a safety night at Stewart Elementary, members of ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) gave tips to parents and students to protect themselves against online predators.

“You think messages on Snapchat go away. It doesn’t go away,” said Michelle Busch-Upwall, ICAC Education Specialist. “Kids think they can send pictures or videos, but if you put anything online it’s permanent.”

“Think about what you’re posting,” said Brendon Call, ICAC Special Agent.

“Anybody can take a screenshot or a picture with another phone on Snapchat.

Anybody can see what you’re posting today, tomorrow or 10 years from now.

If you don’t want your parents to see it – don’t post it.”

Watch what people comment on, he said. “Bad guys do research and they might find one picture that’s seven years old where someone said ‘John Doe looks cute’ and they get information from that.

Always be vigilant parents please.”

Don’t ever make friends with a stranger, said Busch-Upwall. “If someone is playing a video game with you and they say ‘hey let’s meet at the park,’ never meet with someone you don’t know.”

Call said the same goes for friend requests on social media. “Even though your friends know that person, if you don’t know them face-to-face don’t accept their friendship online.”

Busch-Upwall detailed a case ICAC was involved in surrounding the online game Oculus. “The girl met somebody she didn’t know on Oculus,” Busch-Upwall said. “She told him where she lived and he came to her house and picked her up. Her mom contacted police and they were able to rescue her. She was in a completely different state.”

Another problem online is cyberbullying, said Call. “People can be really mean and say things they’d never say to another human being in person.”

Sexting is also a growing concern, he said. “It’s sending pictures to each other that are inappropriate. A kid gets friended on Instagram or Snapchat and sends a picture. Then the person says ‘if you don’t send me money I’m going to send it to your high school and all your friends and family.’”

There was a case where a 10-yearold was friended through online gaming, said Call. “The mom found out and called the police. Don’t ever send

pictures but if you do, tell someone you trust. Don’t be ashamed of asking an adult for help.”

“When we think of predators we think of a creepy guy in the basement,” said Busch-Upwall. “That’s not always the case. It’s any adult who is making you do anything you don’t want to do.

That’s a predator. If they ask you to keep a secret that’s bad. There’s nothing you should be keeping secret from your parents.”

“Parents pay attention and talk to your kids,” Call said. “Have the discus-

sion. Download the apps so you know the risks and play with them. The later you can get them a cell phone or on social media the better.”

Weber State, HAFB form educational partnership agreement

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com LAYTON—Hill Air Force Base and Weber State University have had a long standing relationship, but the two entities recently entered into a formal Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA) that solidifies that collaborative effort.

The agreement is the first of its kind between a university in Utah. The EPA will allow students and faculty greater access to interact with Air Force personnel and projects. In turn, HAFB will benefit from the insights and resourcefulness of university scholars, according to Weber State.

“There are 32,000 employees at the Air Force Sustainment Center,” said Alphonso Thomas, Director of Engineering and Technical Management – AFSC at a formal signing of the EPA held April 28. “Out of those 7,000 are engineers who aid in the sustainment of the enterprise every day. We need the right talent in place to accomplish our mission. This will help with that. Our workforce needs additional training to solve worldwide problems we’re facing and find solutions.”

The AFSC is committed to equity and inclusion in underserved communities, said Thomas. “To provide education for potential jobs and create a healthy pipeline to ensure we keep ahead of our adversaries to defend the

nation from those who may do us harm.”

“This is not something new,” said WSU President Brad Mortensen. “We’ve thought of this partnership for decades. When we extended our campus to Layton that led to the selection of this site because of its proximity to HAFB. This gives us an even closer connection and access to the base.”

It’s another cog in the wheel to make northern Utah a vibrant place, he said. This is good for the economy and the country. It’s an exciting time. There’s a lot going on.”

WSU serves all members of the community, said Mortensen. “We want to afford them an education and ensure freedom and safety going forward in the community. DTC and K-12 are also a part of the pipeline. There are great things happening. I’m excited about the future.”

The EPA allows information to be shared back and forth, he said. “It solidifies we’re true partners. It’s the foundation step to an even closer relationship going forward.”

“We need on average 500 engineers a year at Hill, Robins and Tinker (Air Force Base),” said Col. Mike Warner, Senior Military Engineer at HAFB. “Utah can’t produce engineers fast enough. We want staff to represent the population we serve. HAFB represents the whole nation and that our minority status reflects the nation so that we’re not leaving talent on the table.”

and Tech Commercialization at WSU. “It’s a big deal to allow us to move fast on innovation and the workforce side.

The Air Force has huge innovation needs. These pathways allow us to do these things through entrepreneurship and tech community startups but also in defense of the country.

This ecosystem plugs into all of that.”

WSU and Hill have been very intentional putting this in place from both sides, he said. “It’s a testament to how they’ve pushed through to make this happen.” l

The base layer is a homemade blondie, followed by a layer of cream filled chocolate cookies, then topped with a layer of fudge brownies.

Makes 54 Bites (cut six across and nine down) Ingredients: BLONDIE: 1 C Butter, melted 1 1/4 C Brown Sugar (tightly packed)1/2 C Sugar 2 Large Eggs + 1 Egg Yolk – room temp 2 t. Vanilla 2 1/4 C Flour 2 t. Cornstarch 1/2 t. Baking Powder 1 t. Salt 2/3 C White Chocolate Chips 24 Cream-filled chocolate sandwich (aka Oreos) BROWNIE: Mix up brownie dough according to directions on the box – do not cook (Eggs, Oil & Water) Directions: Preheat oven 350° – line a 9x13 pan with parchment paper or grease pan.

Combine melted butter and sugar in a large bowl – stir well. Add eggs and vanilla – stir well and then set aside.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt. Gradually stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients until completely combined. Fold in white chocolate chips. Spread

blondie batter into the prepared pan.

For the next layer, place the 24 cream filled chocolate sandwiches (four down by six across) next to each other.

Push them into the blondie just a bit. For the top layer, stir up the brownie mixture according to the box and then evenly spread brownie over the chocolate cookie sandwiches.

Bake for 40 minutes – or until the toothpick comes out clean.

This dessert should be completely cooled before cutting into bite size pieces. **Quick Cooking Tip for Today** Eggs required in a recipe actually blend better and break up easier when they are used at room temperature. In a hurry? Place refrigerated eggs in a bowl filled with hot tap water for five minutes for a quick warm up. Ta-da!

Woods Cross, Bountiful, Viewmont finish 1-2-3 in Region 5 baseball

T

he Class 5A and 6A state baseball tournaments begin this Saturday, and don’t be surprised if some Davis County teams make an impact.

In Region 5, Woods Cross, Bountiful and Viewmont finished at the top. As of our press deadline, the teams had one more game to play in the regular season and awaited playoff seeding results.

Woods Cross

With one more game to play on May 11 at Viewmont, the 11-3 Wildcats were first in Region 5. Woods Cross was 17-7 overall heading into its final contest.

The Wildcats would have run away with Region 5 had they not stumbled twice last week against Bountiful. The Redhawks defeated Woods Cross twice, 8-7 on May 3 and 5-1 on May 6. In between those defeats, Woods Cross beat Bountiful 10-2 on May 4. The Wildcats scored seven runs in the final two innings and outhit Bountiful 10-3. Dax Weierman hit a home run and had four RBI in the victory, while Blake Stanger added a home run and an RBI. Max Moffat and Taylor Ayala contributed doubles.

This week has been an important one for the Wildcats. A pair of wins over Viewmont kept the team atop Region 5.

Woods Cross won 4-1 on Monday, as Micah Mortensen hit a triple and drove in two runs. Weierman and Ayala added doubles. On Tuesday, the Wildcats prevailed 14-3, amassing 13 hits in the process.

Mortensen hit another triple and drove in a run. Ayala registered a double and had three RBI, while Stanger also hit a double and contributed two RBIs. On Wednesday, the two teams squared off in the regular season finale.

A Woods Cross win would earn it an outright league crown. Even with a loss, the Wildcats could win the championship, depending on how Bountiful fared in its final game. Woods Cross was assured no less than a share of the region title.

Speaking of the Redhawks, their two wins over Woods Cross last week propelled them near the top of the region standings. As of Wednesday, they were

Bountiful’s 8-7 win on May 3 saw the team score five of its runs in the second inning. Drew Beck was the big offensive star. The senior hit a home run and a double, and he also drove in a pair of runs.

Curtis Cook, Hank Tippetts and James Jordan each had doubles, with Tippetts bringing in three Bountiful runs.

When the Redhawks defeated Woods Cross 5-1 on May 6, they limited the Wildcats to just four hits. They also scored all five of their runs in the first three innings. Truman Duryea hit a home run and had an RBI. Teammate Kaisan Averett hit a triple and had an RBI. This hit has been a successful one on the scoreboard for Bountiful. It easily defeated Bonneville in two contests, first winning 20-1 on Monday and then 12-2 on Tuesday. Both games only needed to go five innings. In the first win, Bounti-

ful had 15 hits. Dallin Maxwell hit two doubles and drove in five runs. Cook and Averett each had doubles. In win No. 2 over Bonneville, Bountiful put the game away with six runs in the fourth inning.

Five Redhawks hit doubles, led by Averett and Tippetts, who each had two. Drew Bowles and Beck each had triples.

The Redhawks and Bonneville met on Wednesday for the final game of the regular season. A Bountiful win and a Woods Cross loss to Viewmont would give the Redhawks a share of the region title.

Viewmont

The Vikings were 9-5 heading into the finale against Woods Cross, good enough for third place in the region.

Viewmont’s losses to Woods Cross this week followed a 2-1 week against Northridge. All three games were close, with the Vikings prevailing 12-11 on

May 3 (in nine innings) and 9-4 on May 6. They lost to Northridge by a narrow 7-6 score on May 4. In the first win, Tate Gamble and Luke Jacobs hit triples and had two RBI for Viewmont. In the second win, Jaxon Marble hit a double and had three RBIs. The Vikings closed out the regular season on Wednesday against Woods Cross and await their postseason opponent.

Farmington

The Phoenix placed second in Region 1 at 12-6, well behind undefeated Fremont.

Last week, Farmington swept Syracuse, winning 12-2 on May 3, 11-4 on May 4 and 9-3 on May 6. On Tuesday, the Phoenix fell to Cottonwood 11-7 in a non-region game to wrap up the season.

Bountiful softball is region’s best for 5th year in a row on the season.

Farmington defeated Clearfield 8-0 May 5, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead and adding four more runs in the middle innings to shut out the Falcons.

Lexi Crowley drove in two runs while Nev Carrasquel and Paige Herbon added one RBI each.

The Phoenix are now 9-2 in the Region 1 standings with a 14-7 overall record.

he Bountiful High softball team went 2-1 this past week in Region 5 to win its fifth consecutive region title. Davis, Farmington and Viewmont all picked up wins as well.

Bountiful beat Viewmont 16-1 in four innings May 3, scoring 11 runs in the first two to put the game away early.

Athena Tongaonevai and Eva Stoddard led the Redhawks offensively with two RBIs each while Izzy Rodrigues, Ella Miller, Malissa Turpin, Katelyn Rodgers and Mylie Burnes also drove in a run in the big win.

Against Box Elder May 4, Bountiful lost 5-3. The Redhawks were down 3-0 after three innings and 5-1 until putting up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough in the loss.

The BHS squad then beat Northridge 18-2, scoring 10 runs in the first inning to dominate the Knights.

Miller struck out nine batters in the three inning matchup while also belting a three-run homer to help herself at the plate. Shiloh Johnson also produced three hits and scored four runs in the lead-off spot for Bountiful while Stoddard also hit a home run.

The Redhawks are now 9-1 in Region 5 and 15-5-1 on the year.

In its 16-1 loss to Bountiful, Viewmont’s long run came in the third inning – courtesy of Lily Hawker – to avoid the shutout.

Against Box Elder May 5, the Vikings lost 16-5. They were down 2-0 early before coming back to lead 4-2 and then giving up nine runs in the bottom of the third inning to let the game get away from them.

Kennedy Embrey led Viewmont with two RBIs while Molly Roberts, Oakley Sovic and Lily Wright also brought in a run each.

The Vikings bounced back against Taylorsville May 6 with a 15-6 win over the Warriors. Viewmont came out strong with eight runs in the first inning and added seven more throughout the middle innings.

Roberts had a big game for the Vikings with four RBIs on three hits – including a home run in the first – while also picking up the win on the mound.

“Molly pitched a great game and hit the ball well,” said head coach Stacie Toney, also noting the team’s solid defense and ability to see the ball well at the plate. “Jena Eggett, in particular, has a hot bat and is in a great spot to flip the lineup over.”

Also bringing in runs in the win were Anna Moore (three RBIs), Eggett (one), Hawker (one), Embrey (one), Sovic (one) and Sydni Steed (one).

Viewmont is now 4-7 in Region 5 play and 13-10 overall.

Davis

Davis beat Clearfield 9-5. The Darts went up 5-0 in the fifth inning before the Falcons got on the board. Four more runs in the sixth inning put the game out of reach.

“We hit the ball really well, highlighted by home runs from Abby Olsen and Larkyn Robinson,” said head coach Todd Street. “We also had some great plays in the field by those two along with Alix Thaxton.”

Olsen’s four RBIs led the team with Robinson (two RBIs), Avery Kartchner (one RBI), Sadie Hathaway (1 RBI) and Aubrey Noriega (1 RBI) also providing offense in the win.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross lost to Box Elder 8-3 May 3. Despite scoring the game’s first run in the first inning, the Wildcats managed just one more in the fourth inning and a late run to end the game.

“We couldn’t string enough hits together to score who we had on base,” said head coach Casey Plowman. “We made lots of contact, but it was right to their players.”

Noa Latu hit a double, knocking in a run, while Mel Zarate also recorded an RBI. Against Bonneville, Woods Cross lost 13-1.

“It was not a great game for us,” said Plowman. “We didn’t hit well, but Ali Ebbert did hit a home run!”

Ebbert’s home run in the second inning was the Wildcats’ lone score before giving up 11 more runs the rest of the way.

A Region 5 win remains elusive for Woods Cross who are now 0-10 and 7-15 this season. l

Viewmont boys soccer ties for region title; local teams await postseason seeding

he regular season is in the books for local boys soccer teams. The single-elimination state tournament is up next – and teams have a whole new outlook.

Anything can happen at state, where a team can get hot, go on a roll and advance toward a championship.

Playoff seeding was announced May 11, after our press deadline. One local squad, Viewmont, scored a share of the region title. Other schools go into state motivated to make some noise.

Viewmont

The Vikings finished 6-4 in a hotly contested Region 5, tied with Northridge and Bonneville at the top. A loss to Box Elder in the regular-season finale, May 6, kept the Vikings from winning the region outright. In that contest, Viewmont was in a 1-0 hole at halftime and then got a second-half goal from Kenyon Grange. However, Box Elder also scored in the second half to BASEBALL: Continued from pg 15

In the second win over Syracuse last week, Jack Hansen and Tucker Wall each had triples. Hansen also brought in four runs. The third win of the week came in dramatic fashion. With the score tied at 3-3 at the end of the seventh inning, neither team managed a run in the eighth. Then, in the ninth inning, Farmington exploded for six runs to win going away. Wall hit a triple and had two RBIs.

Davis

Right behind Farmington in Region 1 were the Davis Darts. Davis was 9-8 with one more game on Wednesday at Clearfield.

Last week, the Darts did what every other Region 1 team has done: lose to Fremont. Davis fell 15-1, 6-5 and 6-0 in the contests but rebounded this week with victories over Clearfield. Davis prevailed 14-1 on Monday, as Easton Baggett hit a triple and drove in two runs. Colten Baron was the winning pitcher. On Tuesday, Davis had a tougher time with the Falcons but outlasted them 8-5. Baggett and Wally Grant each had two RBI. l

Viewmont was able to share the region title thanks to a thrilling shootout win over Woods Cross on May 3. Neither team managed a goal in regulation or two overtime periods. However, the shootout was back and forth, with Viewmont finally prevailing 6-5. Prior to the shootout, Viewmont goalie Sam Davies kept Woods Cross out of the net.

The 7-7 Vikings are vying for a first-round home game in the Class 5A playoffs. The tournament begins this Saturday.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats had a rough ending to the regular season. The team was 4-3 heading into its game at Viewmont. After dropping that one, the Wildcats lost their final two games: a 2-1 decision at Northridge on May 6 and a 2-0 loss at Box Elder on May 9. At 8-9, Woods Cross ended the regular season on a three-game losing streak.

During the season, goalie Michael Williams had five shutouts. Aiden Burke led the way with seven goals, while Nathan Blanchard had five goals

and four assists.

Bountiful

The Redhawks went 3-7 in Region 5 and 3-12 overall. Many of the team’s losses were frustratingly within reach.

Bountiful defeated Box Elder on May 3 by the count of 1-0 to improve to 3-5 in league play. Parker Hayford got the shutout, and Javier Moreno scored for his team. It was Moreno’s fourth goal of the year.

But the Redhawks lost their final two regular season games, both in shootouts. First, Bountiful lost to Bonneville on May 6, as the Lakers made five penalty kicks to four for Bountiful.

On May 9, Bountiful led 1-0 at halftime on a goal from Peyton Paxton. But Northridge scored in the second half to send the game to overtime. After two scoreless overtimes, the Knights prevailed 3-1 in the shootout.

Davis

Region 1 is one of the most talented in the state, with defending 6A champion Weber winning the league again. Davis finished third in Region 1

with an 8-4 mark. The Darts enter the postseason with an overall record of 10-4.

The Darts ended the regular season on a strong note, going 2-0 last week.

The Darts blanked Clearfield 3-0 on May 4, with Cooper Barnes scoring twice. Justin Mehr scored the other goal, and Josh Roylance got the shutout.

Against Layton on May 6, the two teams played scoreless through regulation and two overtimes. Davis outlasted the Lancers 4-1 in the shootout.

Farmington

Right behind Davis in Region 1 were the Phoenix from Farmington High School. Farmington went 7-5 in league play and 11-5 overall.

The Phoenix had a chance to hand Weber a rare loss on May 4 but came up short 2-0 on the road. However, on May 9, the Phoenix knocked off Layton on the road 1-0, thanks to a second-half goal from Jaden Petersen. Davis Wadsworth got the shutout in the goal, as Farmington defeated Layton for the second time in two weeks. l

BOYS Davis

The Darts beat Syracuse 20-3 May 3. The Darts shut out the Titans 11-0 in the first half and cruised to the win.

“We had outstanding goalie play from Blake Lucas while our defense played lockdown and caused multiple turnovers,” said head coach Dillon Yocom. “Nick Johnson and Will Greenway also did a great job at face offs for us and we had lots of people contributing on offense.”

Connor Johnson led the team with five goals and one assist with Nick Johnson adding four goals and four assists. Other offense came from Rhett Rice (three goals, one assist), Eli Greenway (three goals), Emmett Rice (two goals, one assist), Ben Roylance (one goal, two assists), Ashton Wood (one goal), Jake Dowdle (one goal) and Emerson Bell (one assist).

Against Roy May 5, Davis won 16-4. The Darts widened their 7-1 halftime lead with nine goals to end the game.

Davis recognized their six seniors – Mason Gagner, Tyler Hoagland, Connor Johnson, Rhett Rice, Jeff Sumsion, Ute Thorpe – on the last regular season home game.

“It was great to honor our seniors,” said Yocom. “We had great play on defense from Jeff Sumsion who was also huge in our transition game. Overall, our defense was really strong all night.

Offensively, we had lots of contributions and Rhett Rice had a big night as usual with five goals and one assist.”

Hayden Hanson had eight goals and one assist to lead the Redhawks with other scoring coming from Jamison Bain (two goals, one assist), Declan Watt (two goals), Ryland Hewitt (two goals) Cole Terry (one goal, two assist), Nathan Horne (three assists) and Isaac Stout (one assist).

Against Bonneville May 6, Bountiful won 22-2, closing out a dominating win where they led 15-0 at halftime behind eight goals and an assist from Hanson.

Vikings won 11-5, shutting out the Bees in the second half after a 5-5 tie at the break.

Woods Cross bounced back from a loss to Viewmont with a 15-11win over Northridge May 6. The Wildcats put in eight goals in the second half to close out a tight game.

Walter Hoge led the way offensively with five goals and two assists along with Will Marx (four goals), Jacob Foutz (three goals, one assist), Carter Dunn (one goal), Zach Orme (one goal), Jack Wood (one goal) and Jack Slobodian (one assist).

Woods Cross stands at 3-5 in Region 5 and 7-6 this season.

GIRLS Woods Cross

Woods Cross beat Box Elder 13-2 May 2, putting away a game where the Wildcats were up 9-0 at the break.

Samantha Atwood netted six goals to lead Woods Cross while Maggie Preece (three goals), Ella Matthews (two goals), Ella Holland (one goal) and Eliza Sonntag (one goal) also scored in the win.

In a 16-3 win over Viewmont, the Wildcats scored eight goals in each half, led by Ella Matthews with four.

Also helping offensively were Atwood (three goals), Preece (two goals, one assist), Lucy Phillips (two goals), Skylar Midgley (two goals) Mylie Derrick (one goal), Eliza Sargent (one goal) and Ashley Miller (one goal).

Against Northridge May 5, Woods Cross won 20-8, after leading 16-2 at halftime. Preece and Atwood were tops offensively with three goals each. Also scoring for the Wildcats were Matthews (two goals), Sargent (two), Alexa Gardner (two), Sadie Allred (two), Ella Tyson (two), Rylee Patterson (two) and Midgley (one).

Woods Cross remains undefeated through eight games in Region 5 play and holds a 9-3 overall mark this season.

Bountiful

Bountiful narrowly beat Box Elder 8-7 May 3 behind three goals and an assist from Amelie Urie and three goals

from Naomi Brice.

Also providing offense for the Redhawks were Sunny Price-Huish (two goals) and Emily Stewart (one assist).

Against Bonneville May 5, Bountiful won 12-1 to improve to 5-2 in Region 5 play and 7-5 on the season.

Davis Davis beat Syracuse 11-5 May 3.

The Darts broke a 4-all tie at halftime with seven second-half goals in the win.

“I’m incredibly proud of how my girls worked as a team and their effort,” said head coach Makenzie Hekking.

“That was the best I’ve seen them play all year.”

Olivia Lifferth scored four goals with an assist to lead offensively with offense also coming from Macie Wood (two goals), Kaydence Johnson (one goal, one assist), Kerri Norton (two goals), Emma Williams (one goal) and Brinlee Wilding (one goal).

Hekking said Ava Bair and Tallulah Raser were “stellar on defense,” particularly on shutting down the Titans’ top players. “Ava and Tallulah were instrumental in our success in denying Syracuse scoring opportunities,” Hekking said, also noting goalie Morgan Bunch’s play with 12 saves, three caused turnovers and six ground balls.

“We still have things to work on, but I’m excited to take this momentum forward,” Hekking said.

Against Roy May 5, Davis won 14-10. The first half proved to be the key for the Darts in leading 7-3 at the break with both teams netting seven second-half goals.

Bair’s four goals and an assist led Davis while Lifferth (three goals), Wood (two goals), Mackenzie Coleman (two goals), Johnson (one goals, three assists), Raser (one goal) and Wilding (one assist) also provided offense in the win.

The Darts then faced Skyridge May 7 and lost 18-5.

“It was a tough game and we lost handily,” Hekking said. “We just couldn’t win the draw and our defense had trouble keeping the Buechner sisters from scoring as they had nine goals. It was a tough loss, but onto the next one.”

“We played a great game,” said head coach Annabelle Roche. “Our girls played very cohesively and worked well together on the field.”

Farmington boys tennis team wins region title

he Farmington High boys tennis team won four of the five lineup slots at the Region 1 tournament at Ogden High School May 2-3 to take the team title.

“It went almost according to plan,” said head coach Maren Conolly. “We were able to identify weaknesses and we should be able to adjust and be stronger coming into divisionals and the state tournament.”

At No. 1 singles, senior Josh Jones shut out both opponents – Layton’s Ryan Hicks and Weber’s Benjamin Olsen – in the semifinals and finals 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Justin Steed, playing at No. 2 singles, beat Layton’s Benjamin Ortiz 6-0, 6-0 and Fremont’s Boston McFarland 6-2, 6-1 with senior Marcin Rucinski, at No. 3 singles, defeating Fremont’s Payton Perkins 6-4, 6-2 and Layton’s Baden Record 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, sophomore Spencer Ostermiller and freshman Nathaniel Bullard beat Weber’s Joshua Orme/Tyler Chambers 6-4, 6-3 and Syracuse’s Jay Taggart/Mitchell Lindhardt 6-4, 6-0 to win the title at No. 1 doubles.

The No. 2 doubles pairing of junior Bronson Bowcut and freshman Blake Geddes beat Fremont’s Ty Ferguson/Sam Taylor 6-4, 6-1 in the first round before losing three-set matches to Weber’s Kaden Banks/Joshua Waldrip and Layton’s Bridger Hunt/ Kayden Smith to place fourth.

New head coach Josey Hilton, along with her staff and players, will be teaching passing, serving and hitting techniques and principles using the renowned Gold Medal Squared program.

There will be a 30-minute lunch break so participants are asked to bring a lunch.

The camp, which costs $75, will end with games to apply the fundamentals taught throughout the day.

Register in the WXHS main office by May 20.

Paige Davis starring in ‘Hello, Dolly!’ at Pioneer Theatre Company

efore she was the lively and entertaining host on TV’s popular “Trading Spaces,” or the spokeswoman for Utahbased R.C.Willey for 10 years, or a guest on programs ranging from “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to “The View,” Paige Davis was a star on the stage. Starting this Friday, she returns to her true love in Pioneer Theatre Company’s production of “Hello, Dolly!”

She’s spent much of the past decade coming to Utah to tape those R.C. Willey commercials from New York City, where she lives with her husband, veteran actor Patrick Page. This is her first time on the PTC stage, and she’s very excited to be the lead in this production.

“Dolly is a force of nature, the consummate salesman, and she’s returning to life,” Davis said during our interview.

“And she couldn’t be more relevant.

We’re all really kind of returning to life after the past two years of lots of isolation.

Many of us can identify with how we’re rejoining the human race, being with friends again, being in love again.”

She credits her husband Patrick for her opportunity to be in “Dolly,” which plays Mondays through Saturdays until May 28.

“He saw me in ‘Mame’ in Boston a few years ago at the North Shore Music Theatre and said, ‘You should get all the Jerry Herman divas under your belt!’” she said. Herman was the Broadway compos-

er and lyricist for the Broadway musical hits “Mame,” “Hello, Dolly!” and “La Cage aux Folles,” winning Tony Awards for the latter two. “Patrick said, ‘I think Dolly would be a wonderful role for you,’ and that compliment was all it took!”

Page began searching around for regional theaters that might be doing it and found out about PTC, where he has performed several times, the latest in 1999 for “Richard III.” “I didn’t know that Pioneer had announced it as part of their season, but Patrick reached out through his manager and they offered me the part,” Davis said.

“I’m very grateful to Karen Azenburg (PTC’s artistic director) for giving me the opportunity.”

Davis has a long resume of stage performances, including as Roxie Hart in “Chicago” on Broadway, in the role of God in “An Act of God” directed by Marsha Mason (Davis was the first woman to play that role), and in the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera production of “Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating, Mating and Marriage.”

Her Broadway credits also include “Boeing! Boeing!,” “Sweet Charity” and “Beauty and the Beast.” She’s also done regional theater productions of “I Do! I Do!,” “The Sound of Music” and “A Chorus Line.”

“Theater is my first love,” she said.

“That’s what I did for years and years before ‘Trading Spaces.’ I was on Broadway long before I was on television.”

She has loved her time in Salt Lake City, preparing for this weekend’s opening and working with “this marvelous cast

“I have so much respect for Karen and how she has kept this theater afloat through COVID,” Davis said. “Talk about pivoting – not every regional theater has survived the pandemic. People need to understand and really give her credit for what she’s accomplished. She’s still here, and she has not had to cancel a single show due to a positive COVID test.”

In fact, Davis said the entire cast has been rehearsing in KN-95 masks. “No one can afford to get sick,” she said.

PTC has added a special twist to this production – a cast of local celebrities who will have short roles in Act 2 as “the Judge.” They include former state epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn; Dr. Martell Teasley, interim senior VP of Academic Affairs and Provost at the University of Utah; Babs Delay, owner of Urban Utah Homes & Estates; state senator Luz

Escamilla, and Fox 13 news reporter Ben Winslow. They will each make three evening appearances and one matinee during the show’s run.

“We thought the community would enjoy seeing some of its most well-known and beloved members show up on stage, somewhat out of their element,” Azenberg said. “I want to thank these very busy individuals taking time out of their lives to provide our patrons with some unexpected fun.”

Rotary Cruise Night raises money for literacy program

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—Members of the Centerville-Farmington Rotary club held a successful fundraiser featuring classic automobiles. The event at Culver’s in Bountiful on April 26 featured nearly 30 classic cars and brought in customers to both the show and the fast food eatery all night long.

“There was an $800 donation from Culver’s for our efforts,” said club spokesman Matt Eddington.

“We had cars from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Some were in original condition and some were hot rods, and everyone was surprised to see so many cars.”

Bob West and Dale Thomas of the Rotary club featured cars in the show, and Scoot, the mascot from Culver’s, was there to meet families and pose for photos.

Eddington said the money raised

will be used for the club’s children’s literacy program, helping with its goal to give a book to every child who is a patient at Lakeview Hospital.

Members of the Centerville-Farmington Rotary participated in the Utah Rotary District #5420 Annual District Conference in West Valley City. The three-day conference wraps up Saturday, May 14, with a number of service projects providing hands-on assistance to those suffering food insecurity, victims of domestic violence, and veterans who have served our nation.

Other upcoming club events are a spring cleanup and planting on May 19 at the Freedom Hills Park Veterans Monument, a sorting project on May 26 at the Bountiful Food Pantry, and the annual club installation banquet on June 2 and Oakridge Country Club in Farmington. l

Hyrum Emerson Bradley, Jr. October 31, 1928 – May 7, 2022

On Halloween 1928, Hyrum Emerson Bradley, Jr. was born to Hyrum Emerson Bradley, Sr. and Beulah Maurice Bradley at his grandparents’ home in Eureka, Utah.

His father paid the country doctor who delivered him a bushel of apples and two dozen eggs for his services. Ah yes, life was much less expensive, less complicated, and simpler in those days!

For the last few months he received wonderful care at Whisper Cove in Kaysville, Utah. During the early morning hours of May 7, 2022, at the age of 93 he passed from this mortal veil from causes incident to age, and slipped away to join his loved ones who had already completed their earthly adventure. We are confident Hy’s reunion with these loved ones is glorious, delightful, and wonderful!

After residing in Price, Utah and Provo, Utah in his early childhood, as Hy entered the fourth grade, his family relocated to Pleasant Grove, Utah, where Hy first met his future wife, Dorothy Ann Nelson and became her classmate. It would seem that the fates had aligned the stars that would set the stage for his life-long path! He often told the story about how he chased her incessantly at recess because (he said) he liked to watch her curls bounce when she ran. He also said she had the most delightful scream when he caught her. They had a “catch and release” policy in those days.

In his pre-teen years, he was able to spend much of each summer on a ranch a few miles south of Price, Utah riding horses “bareback” while herding other horses and cattle. It was really “roughing” it because there was no food grown on the ranch or potable water for humans.

In high school, he played saxophone in three dance bands, excelled academically and served as Student Body President, with Dorothy as Class Secretary.

After graduating from Pleasant Grove High School, he served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. He trained as an electronics technician, and while serving in the Atlantic and Mediterranean he performed the duties of “Bridge Talker,” close to the ship’s captain during all operations.

Upon returning from the Navy, Hy was delighted to discover that Dorothy was still unfettered by marriage, and he felt motivated to immediately marry her to preclude any unforeseen and unworthy rivals from attempting to steal her away. He quickly convinced her the days of “catch and release” had passed, and after a short courtship they went to the Salt Lake LDS Temple to be sealed for time and eternity. They were faithful companions in all of life’s adventures until Dorothy’s passing on May 15, 2018.

He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1951.

Some decades ago, Hy retired from a long

and successful career with the old telephone company in Mountain Bell and AT&T, having held numerous senior leadership assignments. He loved his work. In his last role, he managed over 3,000 people in both New Mexico and Arizona. Hy’s work with the old telephone company moved him and the family often. They lived in four states (some states numerous times). Everywhere they lived, they made cherished lifelong friendships. During his last decades he resided in Fruit Heights, Utah, often commenting that his favorite reason for living there was his close friends and neighbors.

Hy had a sure testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and faithfully served in many capacities throughout his life. While he served diligently in a broad spectrum of Church assignments, serving at various times as a bishop, in a stake presidency and other leadership positions, as an executive secretary, as a teacher, as a missionary with Dorothy, and in temple service, he sought most devotedly to fulfill his unending divine roles as husband and father. Until health issues complicated matters, he continued to serve in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and live a purposeful life as a devoted, faithful servant of Christ.

Hy and Dorothy had four children: Scott (Tamara); Guy (deceased); Kirk (Rosa); and Lorraine “Lorrie” (Logan) Stapley. To date, they have 15 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Friday, May 13, from 6-8 p.m at the Russon Funeral Home at 1941 N. Main St. in Farmington, Utah. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, at the Fruit Heights Stake Center, 190 North Mountain Road in Fruit Heights, Bishop Mike Burnett conducting. A viewing will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church before the service.

Interment will follow at the Farmington City Cemetery.

Q: Who played the doctor in “Death on the Nile”? He looked really familiar.

A: For once, it’s possible the actor wasn’t recognizable because he was done up to look like a regular person. That was outlandish British comedian Russell Brand playing Dr. Windlesham.

Brand is as known for his gothinspired, androgynous fashion choices as he is for his over-the-top comedy

style. But in the Agatha Christie mystery adaptation “Death on the Nile” (2022), he was done up to look like an unassuming gentleman — a reluctant aristocrat and the jilted lover of the central murder victim. And so, of course, he was also not recognizable because he was really playing against type. In his comedy persona, Brand is anything but “unassuming.”

North Americans may not be familiar with his standup act, but his previous film resume gives the same impression.

For example, he played his role as an unmanageable rock star so well in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” (2008) that the character got a whole movie to himself two years later in “Get Him to the Greek” (2010).

Brand also played a slightly more refined, but still out-of-control, version

In ‘95 he married production designer Eve Mavrakis (“Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” 1998), but the pair, who have four daughters together (two of whom are adopted), separated in 2017. Their divorce was finalized in 2020.

McGregor received international attention for his portrayal of heroin addict Mark Renton in “Trainspotting” (1996), but his most famous role to date came in 1999 when he played the young incarnation of fan-favorite ObiWan Kenobi in the first Star Wars prequel trilogy film, “The Phantom Menace” — he would later reprise this role in “Attack of the Clones” (2002) and “Revenge of the Sith” (2005).
