COUNTY LOOKING FOR WAYS TO CONSERVE WATER IN WAKE OF GOVERNOR’S EMERGENCY DECLARATION

Spencer Cox declared a state of emergency April 21 due to the dire drought conditions facing the state. Here in Davis County, the commissioners are also looking for ways to conserve water.

“An executive declaration of emergency gives him the extra ability to navigate this,” said Commissioner Lorene Kamalu.

“I understand why he did that.

It’s turned into a big deal. I attended water school last fall with 20 officials from across the state.

I thought I knew a lot about water but I learned more.”

and it’s been on the county’s mind for years, she said. “We oversee all of the facilities except the Sheriff’s Office. A few years ago we were told by our facilities director Lane Rose that the outside water system was old and needed to be replaced. He researched it and went with something different. It has soil moisture sensors that combine with tech so that not only doesn’t it water when it rains but it tells you how the soil is doing in the heat of the day depending on the type of soil.”

It goes back to being water conservation minded, said Kamalu. “There are two things that help, aerating and putting peat moss where the turf tends to get really scorched so that it retains water longer.”

Utah is the second driest state, she said. “Overall for the last 20 years there has been a decline in the snowpack. Water is pretty complex in Utah. It’s not one agency that oversees it all. The pioneers prepared the way with reservoirs and all that work is benefiting us, but more must be done. We need to do better as a state.

We actually have to landscape for the climate we have and combine that with growth.”

This is a wake up call, Kamalu said.

“We probably all should have functional turf and less non-functional turf.

Functional turf is what we use and need.

Non-functional turf is not really being used but we still mow it and have it. We must change our ways in Utah.”

Kamalu said she was born and raised in Utah but lived in Indiana for a time.

Lorene Kamalu “We didn't have irrigation water. Our lawn wasn’t as green as the neighbor’s but it was nice. When we moved back to Utah in 1996 we had to learn how to deal with water and landscaping. When we built our second house we created a lot of areas without turf.”

The memorial courthouse and campus reconstruction is underway. “It was designed two years before the severe drought,” she said. “It was designed as a gathering place. There are xeriscaped planter boxes but there are a lot of turf areas. It will be used not only by Farmington but the entire county. It will be a wonderful plaza.”

Before moving forward, Kamalu said the commissioners wanted input from the Weber Basin Conservancy director over landscaping. “If we put turf down it won’t survive watering just once

We don’t know how long that will last before it needs to be replaced. It could be too hot so you might not even be able to have your shoes off.”

ation, Warhola’s attorney and prosecutors from the Davis County Attorney’s Office agreed that she “is not competent to proceed to trial at this time, but there is substantial probability the defendant would be competent to proceed” sometime in the future.

Warhola, 56 was arrested on Sept. 8, 2010 after allegedly strangling her two children James, 8 and Jean, 7 in their Layton home. After spending nine years at the state hospital, doctors deemed her mentally competent to stand trial but before her trial in September 2021, Warhola’s attorney told the court she had regressed and she went back for more treatment.

Her next hearing is set for Aug. 2.

Multiple fire departments across the valley take part in these classes to train their firefighters to the level of Hazardous Material Technician.

Cyclist killed in collision LAYTON—A 38-year-old Layton man was killed on Saturday when his bike was hit by an SUV in an intersection on Hill Field Road.

“Just before noon on Saturday the cyclist collided with an SUV that was southbound on I-15 and had taken the exit under the overpass,” said Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman. “The suburban got off the southbound exit and went to make a left hand turn at the bottom of the ramp.”

The light turned green and the SUV proceeded westbound on the north side of the intersection on Hill Field Road, he said. “The cyclist left the sidewalk to cross the off ramp and was hit. He was taken to the Layton Mall parking lot where a medical helicopter transported him to the hospital where he passed away.”

The cyclist has been identified as James Christopher Pinko. “It appears the driver had a green light so we’re still investigating whether anyone will be cited for anything.”

The Kenley Amphitheater, at 403 N. Wasatch Drive in Layton, will host Ballet West II on Thursday, May 19 at 8 p.m. The performance will include a repertory program of both classical and contemporary pieces from around the world, performed by Ballet West’s ensemble. Raymond Pas de Dix opens the evening, a swashbuckling culmination of a love triangle that’s gone awry. The performance is free.

t’s an old saying: “Pay attention to what a person does, not what he says.” This is currently applicable when we are talking about inflation.

Utah pollsters report that we are seriously worried about it. Gas prices are especially galling since we are daily reminded as we routinely drive past the Maverik and the Chevron stations, and we know that housing prices continue spiraling even though it doesn’t directly impact us unless we are buying or selling. And then there’s the trip to the grocery store; golly, we’ll have to cut back on pickle spears this week!

So the polls say that Utahns believe the economy – the entire financial world – is preying upon them. They blame government spending. They fear a recession.

They see life as we know it evaporating.

Yet, despite this widespread fear, I don’t see that anybody is really cutting back on spending. Ironically, their

As the Pogo comic strip once noted, “We’ve seen the enemy – and it is us!”

KSL-Radio recently reported how inflation has affected the cost of a cheeseburger (lettuce up 12%, mayonnaise up 14%, etc.). But ask the counter guy at Burger King if customers are cutting back on Whoppers with cheese.

National reports say inflation may be costing families $700 more a month, but the restaurants that I visit are doing quite well. (“Reservations for Thursday night at 6 p.m.? Sorry, but we’re full until 7:30.) Yes, the cost of bacon is up 17% and the avian bird flu has boosted up the price of eggs. But the owner of my weekday breakfast spot has seen no decrease in people ordering omelets and bacon sandwiches.

As for coffee, he increased the price 40 cents per cup last month, yet his customers are not decaffeinating.

Airlines have boosted the price of flights, yet Delta reported last week that sales increases are at historic highs…Those long lines at the Swig haven’t gone down. Folks are still rewarding themselves with an overpriced Diet Coke with a splash of lime…One would think people could easily reduce their clothing purchases, but the stock price of Lululemon (where you have to take out a second mortgage to buy yoga pants) is sitting close to a new high.

In my own field of work, we have more new printing orders this month than I can ever recall despite rising prices due to the unavailability of many printing papers. Disneyland increases its resort prices, yet no one I know is canceling their visit to the happiest place on earth. Visit a car dealer, and chances are you will be put on the waiting list for a $60,000 truck.

I’m not saying that inflation isn’t a problem and I assume some people are reducing their travel when they see the price at the gasoline pump. But the Federal Reserve rate increases will tamp down on the overheated economy, and most economists see inflation leveling off at about 5% by the end of the year.

So stop all the hand-wringing. Today’s inflation is not the Black Plague and, from what I see at the restaurants, airports, and shopping malls, the economy is humming along just fine, thank you.

Resident participation sought for recycling survey W asatch Integrated Waste Management District (Wasatch) in Layton has released a survey seeking input on trash and recycling services for Morgan and Davis counties residents. The survey asks residents to share their opinions on and experiences with Wasatch’s services to shape its Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP).

Aimee L. Cook, a manager with the district, said the survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and will be open until June 15, 2022. To take the survey, visit www.wasatchintegrated.org/2022wastesurvey. The survey results will inform the SWMP and will be presented to Wasatch’s Administrative Control Board.

Residents can expect to see the survey advertised on the District’s website, on its social media accounts, and at its facilities through June.

The feedback we receive through this survey will help inform us how we are doing and how we can continue improving,” said Nathan Rich, Executive Director of Wasatch. “It is important to us to solicit the opinion of our customers, the residents of Morgan and Davis counties, as we make plans to pur-

Seismic report identifies 17 schools in district that have unreinforced masonry

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—Seventeen schools in the Davis School District were identified as having unreinforced masonry (URM) in a recent statewide report by the Utah Department of Public Safety’s Division of Emergency Management on the seismic conditions of schools. However, several of the schools were on the list based on the original build year and those have been replaced.

The district is aware of the buildings on the list and commissioned its own seismic studies in 2006 and 2017, Facilities Administrator Gary Payne said during a presentation to the Board of Education at a recent meeting. “This report is not a surprise to us. said.

The district has also fully reconstructed some of its oldest buildings that include Davis High, North Davis Junior High, South Clearfield Elementary and West Bountiful Elementary. Bountiful Elementary and Sunset Junior High are on the list for a future rebuild, he said.

Payne also told the board that the other 12 schools have already had seismic upgrades throughout the years such as connecting walls to the roof to help prevent a roof collapse during an earthquake.

“This report is a good thing for us, because it brings the attention of the concern that we have to the state level,” said Payne. “The most important thing stated in the report states that authors do not believe any students are in imminent danger – and it just brings to light the scope of the problems.”

“There is no question that some of our schools are old and date precode 1972,” said Business Administrator Craig Carter. “Through the efforts of Gary’s team, we have worked hard to try and make them as safe as possible.” l

Parents ask board to change policy on elementary school travel

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—Members of the Valley View VEX robotics team took second in state and qualified for the world competition in Texas, but because of a district policy prohibiting elementary school travel they won’t be going. Parents of the students came before the school board at the April 19 meeting to express their concerns. The board was set to vote on the policy later in the meeting.

“There is no elementary funding for travel,” said one parent. “We tried to apply for funding through an outside business but because it’s not backed by the district we couldn’t get funding. The district is blocking all avenues for us to go. It’s very disappointing.”

“These kids in the VEX program have worked very, very hard,” said another parent.

“They took second in state and qualified for the worlds. I’m here to advocate for the students. It’s ironic that you will be voting on this later in the meeting.”

The policy prohibits extended travel, a destination more than 100 miles from the district administrative office, overnight travel, missed school days, etc.,” said Ben Onafrio, attorney for the district who presented the policy for a vote. “Currently there is no way for the robotics team to travel because there is no way for us to charge because there is no fee schedule for elementaries.”

One of the parents mentioned they were not able to go and get sponsorships and raise money, Board member Julie Tanner said. “Are parents then allowed to form a team on their own without the sponsorship of the district?”

“And they would not use the school’s equipment,” said Superintendent Reid Newey.

There’s a discrepancy in the policy, said Board member Liz Mumford. “There’s a place in our policy that mentions elementary travel but there’s never been a practice of elementary travel since we made policy changes several years ago. This is really aligning our travel policy to match our fee policy.”

This also takes away confusion, she said. “That’s an apology that I make that there’s some confusion this year from the teams that had different expectations going into this experience. We want to avoid that any way we can moving forward. I don’t think that diminishes their accomplishments; there are several teams that qualified.”

The teachers, parents and especially these students have done amazing work, she said. “We want this program to grow and expand.”

Mumford said the board looked at elementary travel a couple of years ago because the competition was in St. George. “I believe the district made a significant effort to make sure we had a location with the capacity to support this locally because we really want to improve access so these kids can participate.

We want kids to be successful in VEX robotics or whatever the case may be. We have to look at this long term based on safety and the value academically and socially with kids in this age group, equity, cost and other factors.”

VEX champions start independent fundraiser

n an effort to send their kids to the VEX Robotics World Championships in Dallas May 10-12, the parents of Valley View Elementary students have started an independent fundraiser.

The Valley View team placed second at the state competition which qualified them to go to the world championships but Davis School District policy does not allow travel at the elementary level.

So the parents stepped in with the hope of raising enough money for the kids to attend.

Mumford said she was not supportive of elementary travel. “It’s something we’ll have to address now or later. It’s a bummer for the families that thought they were getting into something that had the potential to escalate but we just haven’t had elementary kids travel and I’m not supportive of moving forward.”

Discover Davis offering grants for murals

iscover Davis is accepting applications for mural grants from May 1 to June 17. Those selected could be awarded up to $10,000 for an approved mural work.

Jessica Merrill, Tourism Director for Discover Davis, said the organization “recognizes the economic impact that the arts brings to a community. It offers a valuable local and visitor experience that drives people to areas and adds a sense of place in our community. This program is intended to increase the number of public murals displayed on the outward walls of buildings within Davis County.”

She said the ultimate goal is to organize a Mural Tour map within Davis County and “support our communities in beautifying their areas.” Her team will present projects that meet criteria and are eligible to the Tourism Tax Advisory Board for scoring and final funding, which will be approved ultimately by the County Commission.

Projects must highlight positive images that complement the community and tourism assets.The mural location must be within the Davis County boundaries. Only one application per project is allowed. Private business owners or cities must submit an application in conjunction with an artist.

The applicant needs to agree to and have a plan on the upkeep and maintenance of the mural and costs associated. A rendering of the mural will need to be approved by Discover Davis prior to work commencing.

This grant is intended only for new mural projects, not designed to restore or be used for the upkeep of an existing mural.

The Discover Davis – Utah’s Amusement Capital logo must be placed on the mural, that is reasonable in placement and size. The intent of the logo is not to detract from the artwork itself, but must be visible enough to recognize Discover Davis as a sponsor.

Businesses are only allowed to be awarded one application each calendar year. Cities can submit and be awarded more than one grant per calendar year, but after the first application received, priority will be given to other first time applicants, and only considered if funding is still available.

Grant requests cannot exceed $10,000 (Grant requested amount, not total project cost), 75% of funds will be given upon award with 25% paid upon completion of the project when the final report is submitted. Exact times and days may vary due to weather conditions, airspace availability on the Utah Test and Training Range and other support elements. Flying is scheduled to be completed by approximately 11 p.m. depending on those factors.

The fighter wings train at night to maintain their all-weather capabilities and combat readiness.

All three of the wing’s fighter squadrons have deployed in support of combat operations in the Middle East and remain ready when called upon, a Hill release said. The 34th Fighter Squadron is currently deployed to Spangdahlem Air Force Base, Germany, in support of NATO’s defense posture.

Kids plant tree and pledge to love the earth

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—Kids from kindergarten up to sixth grade took turns last week writing ways they can love the earth on slips of biodegradable paper and throwing them around the roots of a tree they planted at Valley View Elementary in celebration of Earth Day. “It’s a way for the kids to be involved,” said PTA President Marla Keller.

“We’ve been discussing ways to reduce, recycle and respect the earth.”

The kids learned about how important it is to plant a garden and use the compost, she said. “They can be the change by conserving water, picking up trash when they

see it, cleaning up and repurposing things like making a pen holder out of a can or reusing plastic bags.”

Each child signed a piece of paper with a pledge to love the earth then threw it onto the roots of the Maple. Seasons Four Landscape supported the school with the tree.

Utah’s inflation higher than the national average

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—Americans are seeing prices soar for gas, food and housing—and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon. Nationally the inflation rate is 9.9% but in Utah it is 11.9%, causing residents to really feel the pinch.

Sen. Mike Lee and Congressman Blake Moore discussed their ideas on what needs to be done to curb the trend during a recent chamber town hall. Lee also met with families at a gas station in Bountiful to talk about the impacts the government has on inflation.

“Each family in Utah is spending an estimated $582 just for a basic basket of goods and services they purchase one month to the next,” said Lee. “That’s $582 more than they were spending at this time last year. We have some of the highest numbers in the nation.”

Polling shows that the average Utahn is most concerned about inflation, he said. “Most Utahns know without major

changes inflation is going to stick around.

Household income isn’t keeping up with inflation because people understand that wages across the board have increased but not nearly as much as inflation. For some their earnings haven’t increased at all.”

An increasing number of Americans identify inflation as the biggest problem facing the country, Lee said. “Biden’s budget spends trillions and trillions of dollars. The scary thing about that is in 10 years we’ll have a $45 trillion deficit.

We’ve been taught a lot by Milton Friedman who said, ‘Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon, in the sense that it is and can be produced only by a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than in output.’”

He gets right to the point, said Lee. “This is what happens when we do this to our money supply. It isn’t outpaced in increases of productivity and that’s exactly what we’ve done. There’s way too much money following too few goods.”

It’s difficult for Utahns struggling to make ends meet, he said. “To help curb the current inflation cycle we need to first

resolve the supply chain crisis. Since the COVID pandemic and the global shutdown and its interaction with the domestic economy, we haven’t been able to match the demand.”

Ports are backed up with ships that have containers on them, then backed up at the ports to get the containers unloaded, said Lee. “There’s a shortage of trucks and employees. We need to get the products off the ships, into trucks and onto shelves. The pandemic exacerbated each of these problems.”

At the beginning of the pandemic people were paid more to stay home than go to work, he said. “Stimulus checks also reduced workers and flooded the economy with cash ratcheting up both sides of the equation at once. By doing so simultaneously it reduced productivity. That made the inflation problem much more significant.”

The cost of gas was soaring long before Russia went to war with Ukraine, said Lee. “We have enormous energy resources in this country. We ought to be unleashing those resources.”

“After shutting down the economy during the pandemic we tried to ramp up production,” said Moore. “But if you try and ramp up too quickly you’re going to cause a supply issue.”

There’s also a housing problem, he said. “People are saying ‘not in my backyard.’ We have a supply and demand issue here. We don’t have enough housing to allow for the American dream.”

It’s a well run state which encourages people to move here, said Moore. “More people will come. Growth affects gas prices. We’re not doing what we need to be doing for the American people. What’s being done in Washington is affecting our local businesses. People are recognizing it. We need to do a better job communicating what changes we’re going to make.”

Remembering Orrin Hatch – and our first meeting in Provo

I

n 2018, when Utah Senator Orrin Hatch announced his retirement, I penned a remembrance of him while I was editor at the now-defunct Davis Clipper. It was because of journalism and my very first job that I met Mr. Hatch, and how we crossed paths several times over the 42 years he served in the U.S. Senate. I always felt a connection to him.

So obviously since I learned on Sunday morning of his passing, I’ve been saddened and melancholy.

The great memories, however, will endure.

Those who know me have heard the story before. I met Orrin Hatch in 1976, when I was interviewing candidates campaigning for the Republican nomination to run against three-time Democratic incumbent Frank Moss. It was in July, the state convention had been held and Hatch had emerged slightly behind favorite Jack Carlson but with enough delegates to earn a spot in the September primary. Both Carlson and Hatch were making the newspaper interview circuit, including to the Daily Herald in Provo where I was a reporter.

Hatch came into the newspaper along with his campaign manager, a guy named Mac Haddow. Hatch’s interview with me was much different than Jack Carlson’s. He looked me in the eyes when he spoke, his answers seemed more sincere and genuine.

Two weeks later, Haddow called me and said, “What do you think of my boy?” I told him I was impressed. He

told me Hatch was impressed by me, then asked if I had a desire to help with Hatch’s campaign. It would be volunteer work – no pay and after hours – and I’d have to drive back and forth from Provo to Salt Lake City several times a week to their headquarters.

Their office was in a rented house on 400 South across the SEVEN-TERM UTAH street from Chuck-A-Rama SEN. ORRIN HATCH (the houses were torn down years ago and a hotel now sits passed away on April 23 on the site). Being a political in Salt Lake City. junkie in those days (as I still Photo courtesy of Orrin G. Hatch Foundation am), I jumped at the chance.

So for no pay, on my own time, and simply for the experience, I worked with Orrin for the next eight weeks prior to the primary election. I accompanied him on several public appearances, helping with a few press releases from his campaign, giving him a little media coaching, etc. In turn, I did enjoy some free meals at ChuckA-Rama and some great experiences working on a national campaign.

The primary was on Tuesday, Sept. 14, and my wife – nine months pregnant – accompanied me to Salt Lake City for what would either be a victory party or a “thanks for trying” celebration.

On the way to Salt Lake, my wife began feeling labor pains as we headed to the party (also held at Chuck’s). Orrin put his arm around her shoulder and jokingly said, “Hey, if you have the baby here tonight, we’ll get national publicity.”

He was joking, I promise. Our son Jeff was born the next day at Utah Valley Hospital.

Hatch won the primary but I was not in a position to volunteer “full time” for his race in the general election, so our campaign days together were over. But a few weeks later, Ronald Reagan came to Utah to help support Republican candidates. He spoke at a fundraising luncheon, and as I sat there as a guest of Hatch’s campaign, Orrin surprised me when he took me up to the head table to meet Mr. Reagan.

I’ll never forget Reagan’s handshake or his sincere greeting.

It was pretty heady stuff for a 23-year-old, first-year journalist to experience. Of course Hatch was elected to the Senate that November and four years later, Ronald Reagan was elected President.

The senator and I saw each other a few times over the years, the last when author Lee Roderick, who’s written three books about Hatch, met me at one of the senator’s book signing events. Hatch always seemed to remember our time together as his political career was beginning.

I followed his career over those six terms, not always agreeing with the things he’s said or the way he’s voted, as our political directions didn’t often align. But I respected him for his service to the country, and I am grateful for the experiences I had working with him. Thank you, Senator Hatch.

‘Metal Lords,’ ‘Rescued by Ruby’ and other Netflix movies perfect for a mood boost

Heavy metal has always made a home for outcasts, even when they’re desperately uncool.

That’s definitely the case with “Metal Lords,” the messy, foul-mouthed, but ultimately heartwarming story of three teens brought together by heavy metal music. Though it’s more “School of Rock” than a heavy metal song, it’s both funny and sweet to watch these awkward, isolated kids find their power.

If you need more metal, there’s also a ton of guest spots that deeper-level fans will recognize and appreciate.

The movie opens on two teens who are trying to start a heavy metal band. They need a bass guitarist, but since they’re the only metal fans at their school it’s been a challenge. When Kevin (Jaeden Martell) approaches a girl who

plays the kind of bass meant for an orchestra, all three teens have to learn what it means to be truly metal.

Martell, along with band mates Adrien Greensmith and Isis Hainsworth, are all endearingly awkward in their own way. Though they all face challenges, the movie makes sure they’re never too dark.

After all, heavy metal is there to save them.

Rescued by Ruby

If you like dog movies, you need to watch “Rescued by Ruby.”

Based on a true story, the movie checks off nearly all the boxes on the ultimate dog movie list. An opening that finds the dog unadoptable, putting his future at risk until the right owner comes along to save him. A powerful bond between dog and owner where they see themselves in each other. A glorious triumph that proves just how special the dog really is.

Even better, the dog lives.

The movie moves the story up to Canada, where Grant Gustin is a Mountie who dreams of joining the special detection team. That means he needs a dog to train, and since the team doesn’t have the budget for more he needs to find his own.

Enter Ruby, the most untrainable dog in Canada.

The film follows a very specific formula, but it’s a sweet, satisfying one that goes down smoothly. There’s a good balance of humor and dramatic moments, just enough to keep you drawn in until the very end. It even has a nice twist I won’t spoil that gives the whole thing a little extra depth.

Taken all together, it’s exactly the kind of movie dog lovers have been waiting for.

Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood

Childhood is always more relaxing after you’ve left it.

“Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Child-

hood,” the latest from Richard Linklater, delivers that trip with a gently fantastical feel. It takes audiences back to the summer of 1969, where a young boy lives a sweetly mundane summer while also training for a secret moon mission. The rotoscoped animation style seamlessly blend the real and fantastical elements, and the lyrical tone makes it feel like the softest kind of memory.

Despite the space plot, most of the movie’s focus is on capturing the era-specific experience of childhood.

That means that not a lot happens in terms of story, but the recreation can create a warm nostalgia even if you never lived in the time period. The details are vivid, turning both regular and impossible moments into their own kind of poetry.

IHC landscaping overhaul estimated to save 17.5 million gallons of water a year

In an effort to conserve water, Intermountain Healthcare announced it will undertake a landscaping overhaul at its hospitals and clinics to help mitigate the impact of its facilities’ water use. The changes are estimated to save 17.5 million gallons of water a year.

“For a long time, larger facilities put in a lot of water intensive grass because it was cheaper and looked nice from an aesthetic standpoint,” Keith Pennington, landscaping supervisor for Intermountain Healthcare said in a release. “Our approach now means thinking about the impact of everything we plant before it goes into the ground and to work to help conserve as much water as possible.”

Intermountain is removing 19 acres of grass and planting more than 350 trees at five hospitals and clinics throughout the valley. In addition to saving water, the effort will reduce the need for repairs, fuel, fertilizer and regular mowing and is estimated to save more than $200,000 a year, the release said.

“A major benefit of our sustainability efforts means the money we don’t use on running our facilities can go back into funding our health programs for patients and the community,” Glen Carrick, system sustainability director for Intermountain Healthcare said. “We want to be good stewards in the communities we serve and this is another step towards that goal.”

Intermountain has required water-wise landscaping at all of its new facilities but is now turning its attention to the older campuses that have non-native plants and more grass. Not only does the savings come from the plants but

Many people don’t realize how important landscapes are to hospitals, said Pennington. “We want a beautiful place for our patients to be able to heal and relax outside and hopefully take their mind off their stresses. Some

Tommy ‘Jed’ Thomas July 3, 1963 – April 22, 2022

Tommy “Jed” Thomas came into this world on July 3, 1963, in Bountiful, UT born to Tom R. Thomas and Margaret A. Brown Thomas. Jed spent his entire life in the Bountiful area.

As a child and adult, he spent many happy times with his family enjoying the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and shooting a great game of pool. Family get togethers were plentiful, enjoying a good game of cards or working on the ATVs with his brothers and cousins.

Jed was married to Theresa Diane Sheehan on March 3, 2000, who together united seven children through previous marriages. He spent most of his life working as a Brick Mason, working with several companies over the years.

Jed was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret, one sister, Tamera, his stepson, Cameron and two of his beloved dogs, Gypsy and Ruby. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Thomas, father, Tom Thomas, his children Jed (Crystal) Thomas, Nicole Whitney, Tamra (Leo) Henesh, Shanna Nguyen, Jason Nguyen and

SPORTS Boys soccer:

Region 5 logjam includes trio of local teams

I

t’s still early in Region 5 for high school boys soccer, but no one has asserted itself as the favorite.

Through five contests, all six teams are within a game of one another.

Woods Cross, Viewmont and Bountiful are in the mix of the Region 5 race. With plenty of action still left, there is time for any team to emerge at the top of the standings.

Viewmont

The Vikings were 3-2 in league play, tied with Box Elder for first place.

They were also 4-5 overall as the week began. Last week, they had just one region game, a 2-1 home loss to Box Elder on April 19. All five Viewmont losses have come by a single point.

In this game, the Vikings found themselves in a 2-0 hole at halftime.

Kenyon Grange scored off a MacKay Roy assist in the second half. But the team couldn’t get another into the net as the equalizer.

Two days later, the Vikings stepped out of league play to take on Region 2 foe Taylorsville. For the first time this season, the Vikings held a team scoreless in regulation. It was also the first time an opponent had done the same to them. Neither team scored in two overtime periods. It wasn’t until Viewmont prevailed 3-2 in penalty kicks that a winner emerged. In Viewmont’s win, goalkeeper Sam Davies was credited with the shutout.

Viewmont hosted Northridge on Tuesday before playing at Bountiful on Thursday.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats entered this week with a 2-3 Region 5 record and an overall mark of 6-6. Both of last week’s games were close ones for Woods Cross, with a regulation win and a tough loss in a shootout.

scored a goal in the first half, while goalie Michael Williams got the shutout.

It was his fourth shutout of the year.

On April 21, Woods Cross opened the scoring against Bonneville and led 1-0 at the half. The Lakers tied things up in the second half, and then neither team scored in two overtime periods.

Bonneville dominated the shootout 4-1 to secure the win.

Woods Cross hosted Bountiful on Tuesday. On Friday, the Wildcats host Box Elder.

Bountiful

The Redhawks are the only Region 5 team to have played just four region games. The Redhawks were 2-2 entering this week and 2-7 overall after a challenging non-league slate.

Things went well in Bountiful’s only game last week. The Redhawks hosted Bonneville and earned a 1-0 victory. Goalkeeper Parker Hayford was credited with the shutout and got plenty of help from his teammates in keeping Bonneville out of the net. Javier Moreno scored a first-half goal, which was all his team needed to win. It was the junior’s third goal of the year and the seventh of his career.

The Redhawks played at Woods Cross on Tuesday, after our press time.

On Thursday, Bountiful hosted Viewmont.

Davis

In Class 6A’s Region 1, Davis is just half a game behind league-leading Weber, the defending state champions.

Davis sits at 6-2 in league games and 8-2 overall.

Davis had not given up more than one goal in any game this season. That changed last week on April 22 when Syracuse scored two in a 2-1 setback.

Kyle Livermore’s first-half goal tied things up at halftime, but the Titans put one into the net in the second half and shut out the Darts in the final 40 minutes.

Davis had a huge game on Wednesday at 7-2 Weber, which took place after our press deadline. The Darts previously lost to the Warriors 1-0 on April 13. On Friday, Davis plays at Fremont.

FHS softball stays on top of Region 1

armington picked up Region 1 wins over Syracuse and Layton last week to remain in first place in Region 1, tied with Fremont, at 7-1. Bountiful is undefeated at the top of Region 5, picking up two more region wins. Viewmont went 2-1 to move into fourth place in Region 5’s standings. Woods Cross is still looking for its first region win this season in six tries.

Davis

Davis lost to Layton 10-0 April 19. The Darts managed just five hits in the game, including two by senior Alix Thaxton.

“Today was not our day,” said head coach Todd Street. “We struggled with getting key hits to score runs and we had uncharacteristic errors in the field. Still, our girls continue to fight.”

Against Fremont April 21, Davis lost 7-3.

“We played much better, but left the bases loaded two times,” Street said. “The girls continue to play hard with the goal of getting better each day. We have a wonderful group of young ladies on our softball team.”

The game was tied at 3-all after three innings before the Darts gave up four more runs in the loss.

Thaxton, Larkyn Robinson, and Aubrey Noriega each drove in a run for the Darts.

Davis fell to 7-10 on the season and 1-7 in Region 1 play.

Farmington

Farmington defeated Syracuse 7-0 April 19. The Phoenix squad broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning with two runs and added five more in the late innings.

Hadley Eichmeier had two RBIs to lead the team with Lexi Crowley, Lisa Rasmussen and Nev Carrasquel each driving in a run in the win.

Delaney Baker struck out 12 Titans’ batters in earning the win on the mound.

Against Bear River April 20, Farmington lost 7-3.

The Phoenix got down 2-0 early before evening the game in the third inning. They struggled to score the rest of the game until a late run in the seventh which wasn’t enough.

Baker had the team’s three RBIs. Against Layton April 21, Farmington won 11-2, scoring in each of the game’s six innings. Baker struck out nine Lancers in winning the game while also driving in a run at the plate. Courtney Christiansen and Elle Mortensen also recorded RBIs in the win.

The Phoenix are now 9-5 this season and 7-1 in Region 1, remaining tied with Fremont for first in the division.

Bountiful

Bountiful beat Northridge 7-6 April 19. The Redhawks took a 7-3 lead into the final inning and narrowly pulled out the win.

Athena Tongaonevai’s RBI ended up being the winning run. Her two hits, along with Malissa Turpin’s two RBIs and Eva Stoddard’s three hits and one RBI led Bountiful offensively.

Against Bonneville April 21, Bountiful won 9-3, entering the final inning up 9-0 before giving up late runs as the Lakers avoided a shutout. Stoddard led the Redhawks offensively with five RBIs while Turpin added two and Mylie Burnes one.

Bountiful lost to Payson 11-8 April 22, being down 9-3 late before scoring eight runs in the sixth inning but coming up short.

Frankie Galeana had three RBIs for the Redhawks with Turpin, Burnes, Shiloh Johnson, Katelyn Rodgers and Claire Yates also driving in a run.

Bountiful remains 5-0 in Region 5 and is 10-4-1 overall this season.

Viewmont

Viewmont beat Box Elder 19-2 April 18 behind four RBIs from Kennedy Embrey and Sydni Steed.

Molly Roberts was the winning pitcher while also helping herself at the plate with two RBIs. Also driving in runs were Lily Hawker (two RBIs) and Anna Moore (two RBIs).

Against the Bees again the next day, the Vikings lost 21-11. Following a 4-3 lead going into the third inning, Box Elder went on an offensive tear to win big over Viewmont.

Viewmont turned it around April 21 with a 13-9 win over Woods Cross.

“I was super proud of the girls,” said head coach Stacie Toney. “The first few innings didn’t go as

planned, but we adjusted well and kept grinding and pulled it together. We are excited to make things happen these last few weeks of the regular season.”

Roberts led the squad offensively with four hits, including three singles and a triple that brought in two runs. Others recording RBIs were Hawker (three), Embrey (two), Steed (two) and Moore (two.)

The Vikings are now 11-6 this season and 3-3 in Region 5 play.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross lost to Bonneville 20-4 Apr. 19. The Wildcats were up 2-1 after the first inning, but the Lakers proceeded to score 15 runs over the next two innings to break open the game.

Noa Latu and Kenna Cowley drove in a run each in the loss.

In the loss to Viewmont April 21, Cowley knocked the first pitch of the game over the wall in the Region 5 battle.

“It was a good game and it was back and forth the whole game,” said head coach Casey Plowman. “Viewmont has strong bats and were able to pull ahead.”

The Wildcats had five players record an RBI each – Cowley, Kali Crockett, Kate Massey, Ali Ebberts and Mel Zarate – with 12 team hits in the game full of offensive firepower. Plowman also noted Libby Clark’s complete game effort on the mound, striking out 11 Viewmont players and allowing just five earned runs in the loss.

Woods Cross is still looking for its first Region 5 win of the season in six games and fell to 6-11 overall.l

Local baseball teams excelling so far in Region 5 play

here’s still plenty of action left in the high school baseball season, but at this point, a trio of local squads are at the top of Region 5.

Through six games, Woods Cross is a perfect 6-0 in region play, with Bountiful and Viewmont sporting 5-1 records in region games. Nine games are left on the region slate. Then, the state tournament will begin based on RPI rankings.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats were 11-4 overall when this week began. In their first six region contests, they outscored foes 81-29.

Last week’s games were offensive wonders.

Woods Cross scored 49 runs in three games against Bonneville, amassing at least 11 in each game. On April 19, the Wildcats lit up the scoreboard in a 25-4 blowout of the Lakers.

Woods Cross did all of its damage in just five innings, piling up 14 runs in the first inning alone. Nine more runs came in the third inning, as the Wildcats had 17 hits. Dylan Williams, Blake Stanger, Cole Smith and Jack Bell each had doubles. Dax Weierman added a triple, while Bell and Taylor Ayala each had three RBIs. The following day, Woods Cross put up 13 runs in a 13-2 victory.

Woods Cross had 12 hits and scored runs in every inning of play. But the big story of this game was how the Wildcats hit an eye-opening four home runs in the contest. Weierman, Stanger, Max Moffat and Francisco Lovato each hit it over the fence, with Weierman also hitting a triple and an RBI. Moffat and Lovato also had two RBIs, while Ayala had two doubles.

The Wildcats completed the threegame sweep of Bonneville on April 21 with a much closer 11-6 win. For the first time in the series, Woods Cross found itself down early, trailing 5-1 in the second inning. But Woods Cross rallied and outscored the Wildcats 10-1 the rest of the way. The Wildcats outhit the Lakers 9-8 and committed just one error. Harley Vicchrilli was the winning pitcher. Stanger stood out at the plate again. He belted two home

runs in this game and had five RBI. Weierman had a home run and two RBIs. Ayala added a triple.

On Monday, Woods Cross had a 9-6 non-region win over Syracuse.

The rest of the week saw the Wildcats facing Box Elder on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Bountiful

The Redhawks went 2-1 against Northridge last week to move to 11-5 overall. Each game was decided by three runs or fewer.

Game one on April 19 was a 9-6 victory for Bountiful. The sixth inning for the Redhawks was a huge one.

They trailed 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth but rallied to score four innings and secure the win. Hank Tippetts had three RBI and a double. Carson Webster added a double and two RBIs. On April 20, the two teams battled to a low-scoring game, with Bountiful winning 3-1. The Redhawks got off to a 2-0 lead after the first inning and held on the rest of the way. Drew Bowles had a home run and an RBI, and Truman Duryea had a triple.

Bountiful suffered its first loss of region play on April 21, falling to Northridge 8-5. The Redhawks got a double from Duryea and a pair of RBIs from Dallin Maxwell and Bowles.

This week, the Redhawks and Viewmont played Tuesday, Wednesday

and Friday.

Viewmont

Speaking of the Vikings, they entered this week with a 9-4 overall record. A week ago, they went 2-1 against Box Elder. Like Bountiful, Viewmont won its first two games but dropped game three.

Viewmont defeated Box Elder 9-4 on April 19, largely behind a 5-0 fifth inning. Luke Jacobs hit a home run in the victory and contributed two RBIs as well.

The second game, on April 20, was a one-sided affair, with Viewmont cruising 13-3. The game only went five innings, as Viewmont scored in every inning and put up five runs in the third and four more in the fifth. Gatlin Solomon was the winning pitcher. He also hit a double and had an RBI. Cal Miller had a double and three RBIs. On April 21, Box Elder got revenge by defeating Viewmont. In a road game for the Vikings, they were held without a run after the third inning. Miller had a double and an RBI. Farmington and Davis In Region 1, the Phoenix and Darts already have 12 region games in the books, each winning seven and losing five. Farmington and Davis are behind 9-0 Fremont in the standings.

The Phoenix are 11-7 overall, while Davis begins this week at 9-9.

Last week, the two Davis County rivals faced one another in a threegame series. Farmington won two of the contests, both on the road.

In the first game, Farmington blanked the Darts 12-0 on April 19.

The Phoenix racked up nine of their 12 runs in the third inning. Landon Tanner was the winning pitcher in the shutout, as Farmington allowed just two hits.

Meanwhile, Farmington had 10 hits, and the Darts committed three errors.

Luke Workman hit a home run and had two RBIs, while Mason Cook added a home run and drove in four runs.

Davis regrouped with a 10-6 win on April 20. This time, Davis outhit Farmington 10-6, as Trey Talbot, Walker Jensen and Tyson Elkins each hit doubles. Elkins also had three RBIs. Cook had another home run for Farmington, and he added a double as well.

On April 21, the two teams played to a much lower-scoring 2-1 game, with the Phoenix prevailing in eight innings. Their run in the top of the eighth proved to be the game winner. Park Romney had a double for Farmington.

Jonny Leishman had an RBI for Davis.

This week, the Phoenix played Layton on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Davis, meanwhile, took on Fremont on those same days. l

Lacrosse teams continue strong play

he Davis boys, ranked fifth in the state, won both of its games against Fremont and Farmington last week while Bountiful beat Bonneville and Viewmont. The Woods Cross girls team came on strong with wins against Viewmont, Northridge and Bonneville, and the third-ranked Davis team splitting its games against Fremont and Farmington.

Davis beat Fremont 16-15 April

“Fremont is always a tough opponent and really pushes our team,” said head coach Dillon Yocom. “Eli Greenway was huge at face offs for us. We were tied with 26 seconds left, but Eli was able to win the face, Rhett Rice got the ground ball and he took it to the cage and finished for a goal to give us the lead with 12 seconds left. Huge win for our team.”

Rice scored five goals to go with three assists while Mason Gagner netted five goals to lead the offense.

Also producing offensively for the Darts were Greenway (three goals), Connor Johnson (two goals, one assist), Emmett Rice (one goal, two assists), Ashton Wood (one assist) and Tyler Hoagland (one assist).

Against Farmington April 21, Davis won 13-8.

“It wasn’t our best game, but we came out and did enough to come away with the win,” Yocom said.

“Blake Lucas made some big saves in the goal for us. We are looking forward to our games this week to get back on track.”

Gagner led the team with four goals with Johnson (three goals, one assist), Greenway (two goals, one assist), Rhett Rice (two goals, one assist), Wood (one goal, one assist), Emmett Rice (one goal, one assist), Bell (one assist) and Ute Thorpe (one assist) also helping on the offensive end.

The Darts are now 10-1 on the year.

Farmington

Farmington defeated Syracuse 10-8 April 19 behind four goals and two assists from Mason Hepworth.

Crew Frost also had three goals while Cooper Hyde (two goals, one assist), Nick Carrino (one goal, one assist) and Kai Leavitt (one assist) were also part of the Phoenix offense.

Farmington’s season record is 4-5.

Bountiful

Bountiful beat Bonneville 18-3 April 20. The Redhawks came out strong, going up 11-1 by halftime and coasted to the win.

Hayden Hanson put in six goals with one assist with other offense coming from Nathan Horne (four goals, one assist), Isaac Stout (two goals), Porter Hadley (one goal, three assists), Jamison Bain (one goal, two assists), Declan Watt (one goal, two assists), Cole Terry (one goal, one assist), Ryland Hewitt (one goal, one assist), Smith Alley (one goal) and Grady Clemons (two assists).

Against Viewmont April 22, Bountiful won 17-6. The Redhawks again scored 10 goals before the break and scored seven second-half goals to put the game out of reach.

Hanson’s six goals led Bountiful while Bain had five goals and three assists along with Teagam Dougher (three goals, four assists), Hadley (two goals), Watt (one goal), Faletau Satuala (one assist) and Cole Terry (one assist).

The Redhawks improved to 7-2 this season.

Viewmont

Viewmont defeated Box Elder 8-7 in overtime. The Vikings were down 5-4 going into the final quarter and took the game into extended play before Abe Salmon scored the winning goal.

In the loss against Bountiful April 22, Viewmont scored just one goal in the first quarter – going down 7-1 early – and managing just three goals in the second half, including being shut out in the fourth quarter.

The 1-1 split this week puts the Redhawks’ record at 5-4 on the year.

were tied up at 2-all at halftime before Woods Cross gave up three goals in the third quarter that ultimately decided the game.

“It was a good game and the boys played well,” said head coach Brett Rurka. “Last week, we lost two senior starting midfielders for the rest of the season to injury and another starter for a week for another injury.

So, we were down three impact players, but our guys still played their hearts out.”

Will Marx put in three goals while Jacob Foutz added the other two for the Wildcats with Walter Hoge assisting on two goals and Zach Orme on one.

Against Northridge April 20, Woods Cross lost 13-6 before bouncing back with an 8-7 win over

Bonneville in a tightly-contested matchup Apr. 22.

The Wildcats are now 4-5 this season.

Girls Davis

Davis lost to Fremont 7-5 April 19. The teams were tied at 5-all at halftime before the Darts gave up two second-half goals in its first loss of the season.

“Games against Fremont are always really close games and a true test for our girls,” said head coach Makenzie Hekking. “Unfortunately, this time Fremont got the better of us. The game was pretty back and forth and then, despite the ball being on our defensive end the majority of the second half, our defense only allowed two goals. When we did get

the ball on our offensive end in the second half we were not able to get good shots off or possess the ball to get better looks.”

Hekking noted Morgan Bunch’s “stellar game in goal” with 12 saves while giving up just seven goals, as well as her team’s ability to control seven of 13 draws in the game.

Ava Bair had two goals to lead the Darts while Macie Wood, Kaydence Johnson and Kerri Norton netted one each. Wood also had two assists while Johnson added one.

Against Farmington April 21, Davis pulled out an 8-7 win.

“It was a good, close game,” Hekking said. “We quickly got up 3-0 within the first two minutes of the game. At half, we were leading 5-2, but credit to Farmington for fighting back and making it a close game. They tied it up at 6-6 with just a few minutes left in the game and then we were able to get a one goal lead with less than two minutes left in the game and possess the ball for the win.”

Wood led the Darts with four goals while Bair (two goals), Johnson (one goal, one assist) and Olivia Lifferth (one goal) also providing offense.

Hekking also noted Bunch’s defense for Davis. “She won the game for us in the cage,” Hekking said.

“Morgan recorded 14 saves while only allowing seven and even picked off a pass in the 8-meter for a caused turnover.”

The Darts are 7-1 on the year.

Farmington

Farmington defeated Syracuse 10-6 April 19.

“It was a great game,” said head coach Annabelle Roche. “Our team played very well together and fought hard for the win.”

Lauren Enright led the Phoenix in scoring with three goals with Edi Bayles (two goals), Ryann Franich (two goals), Avery Yates (one goal), Hailey Larsen (one goal) and Grace Kunzler (one goal) also contributing offensively.

In the loss against Davis, Bayles and Mikayla Jackson both scored two goals to lead Farmington with Larsen (one goal, two assists), Alexa Stephens (one goal, one assist) and Kunzler (one goal) producing offense for the Darts.

“Our team played very well and

had fun,” Roche said. “We were very proud of how they performed and stepped up while three of our varsity players were out on injury. It was a tough loss, but still a great game.”

Farmington’s split of its games brought the team’s record to 4-5.

Bountiful

Bountiful defeated Northridge 17-2 Apr. 18, led by seven goals from Sunny Price-Huish.

Others contributing offensively for the Redhawks were Emily Stewart (three goals, one assist), Amelia Urie (two goals), Naomi Brice (two goals), Megan Youngberg (one goal), Violet Holley (one goal), Riley Coats (one goal), Emily Pulsipher (one assist) and Hallie Bryson (one assist).

Against Viewmont April 21, Bountiful won 6-5 behind two goals and an assist from Price-Huish. Also recording offense for the Redhawks were Urie (one goal, one assist), Stewart (one goal), Brice (one goal) and Sarah Olsen (one goal).

Bountiful struggled against Olympus April 22 in a 20-3 loss, going down 14-2 at the half and managing just one goal in the second

half.

The Redhawks are now 4-4 this season.

Viewmont Viewmont lost to Woods Cross 14-2 April 18. The Vikings scored just one goal in each half in the loss – both by senior Toree Wheatley.

Against Box Elder April 19, Viewmont lost 17-4. The Vikings were down 8-2 at the break and gave up nine second-half goals in the loss.

Hannah Bird scored two goals to lead Viewmont with Wheatley and Keely Banks also scoring one each.

Five Vikings players netted goals in their loss to Bountiful April 21 – Banks, Bird, Wheatley, Eliza Runolfson and Avery Drake.

Viewmont is still winless through nine games this year.

Woods Cross In Woods Cross’ win over Viewmont, the Wildcats came out strong with seven first-half goals and scored seven more to close out the win.

Skylar Midgley led the team with four goals while Samantha Atwood (three goals), Ashley Miller (two goals), Maggie Preece (one goal, one

assist), Sadie Allred (one goal, one assist), Ella Tyson (one goal), Rachel Sims (one goal), Alexa Gardner (one goal) and Mylie Derrick (one assist) also helped with the scoring.

Against Northridge April 19, Woods Cross won 24-6, scoring 12 goals in each half in the big win.

Eleven Wildcats’ players scored, led by Atwood with five goals. The Phoenix aren’t too far behind in the Region 1 standings. Farmington began this week with a 5-3 league record and a 9-3 overall mark.

Through 12 games, the Phoenix have a region-best 24 goals. Farmington fell to Fremont 3-2 on April 20, with Fremont scoring the game-winning goal in overtime. The Phoenix had battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit with goals from Boston Peterson and Jaden Petersen. Chandler Gunn and Cole Jenke assisted for the Phoenix.

On April 22, Farmington routed Clearfield 5-1 behind an offensive clinic from Petersen. The junior put on a show with four goals, giving him nine on the year. Chase Ashby added the other goal, as Farmington tallied three goals after halftime. Gunn had two assists.

Teammates Coleman Stetler, Cameron Bingham and Owen Nicholls each had an assist.

Farmington hosted Layton on Wednesday, after our press time. On Friday, the Phoenix have a home game with Syracuse. l

DHS golfer wins two medalist honors; FHS golfer shoots personal best to share top spot

avis’ Cheyenne Hansen continued her medalist streak in all Region 1 tournaments this year at Davis Park and Valley View.

On April 18, Farmington’s Maura Hawkes tied her personal best with a round of 79 at Davis Park to share the honor with Hansen.

Davis At Davis Park April 18, Davis shot a 343 to defeat Weber by one stroke with Fremont just three more shots back.

“Holy moly! We barely pulled off the match today,” said head coach Lori Salvo.

Along with Hansen’s top placement, Hannah Karras tied for third with an 82. Also placing in the top 12 were Quinn Shupe and Halle Johnston who shot 91s to tie for 12th.

Other scores for the Darts were Liv Davenport 93, Bridgette Volk 95, Abby Lewis 97 and Lizzie Rhodes 101.

At Valley View April 21, Hansen’s 71 dominated the field as the senior finished seven strokes ahead of Fremont’s Madalyn Hadley.

Three other Darts players placed in the top 12 for the firstplace team that shot a 329 to come in 11 strokes better than the Silverwolves – Shupe (tying for fourth with an 84), Karras (tying for seventh with an 86) and Lewis (tying for 10th with an 88).

“We played amazing in that wind,” Salvo said.

Other Davis players finishing at Valley View were Volk and Davenport (94), Johnston (99) and Emma Smith (104).

Farmington At Davis Park, Hawkes’ 79 wasn’t just a personal best; it also included a once-in-a-lifetime shot.

“This was her first hole-in-one and there were some happy tears that were shed. It was a beautiful day for golf.”

Two other Phoenix golfers – Sydney Richards and Aubi Eaves – finished in the top 12 for the fourth-place Farmington squad.

Richards had a round of 85 to tie for seventh while Eaves shot a 91 to finish tied for 12th.

Also competing for Farmington were Paige Olsen and Eden Page, who scored 99s, along with Claire Norton (105), Maddie Baugh (107) and Gretchen Davis (110).

“We have had a total of five tournaments, and we have taken fourth in all of them. We haven’t played to our full potential, hopefully these next two tournaments we will perform like I know we can,” Belnap said. “Our top finishers have been Sydney and Maura who have finished in the top 15 in four of the five tournaments. We have had a few girls with a tournament personal bests – Gretchen Davis, Maddie Baugh and Paige Olsen. We have had two freshmen, Ellie Baugh and Claire Norton, that have played in a varsity tournament and we also have a sophomore that played in her first varsity tournament in Brooke Belnap. Our first tee representative, Aubi Eaves, has had one top 15 finish. We look forward to the next few weeks to see if we can put some good rounds together as a team.”

At Valley View, the Phoenix team came in third for the first time this season – rather than its usual fourth-place showings in this spring’s Region 1 tournaments.

Richards shot an 80, taking third, while Hawkes came in sixth with an 85.

Tennis teams heading into home stretch

Woods Cross beat Bonneville 5-0 April 14.

All three Wildcats’ singles players – Jack Hinkle, Caleb Richards and Brayden Allen – and the No. 2 doubles team of James Thomson/Andrew Harrison shut out their opponents with no games won. Ryker Iverson/Ian Rummens, at No. 1 doubles, beat the Lakers’ duo 6-1, 6-1 to complete the dominating win.

In its match with Bountiful April 19, Hinkle beat Harrison Pearce at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-4, with Allen defeating Will Tooley 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Iverson/Rummens won their match in straight sets while Thomson/Harrison pulled out a third-set tiebreaker 4-6, 6-4, 7-3.

“It was a great day of tennis and competitive, as you would expect with Woods Cross and Bountiful competing against one another,” said head coach Jim Romera. “JV was also very competitive as we won all of our matches except our alternate third doubles, but most of the matches were close.”

The Wildcats won all varsity matches in straight sets against Viewmont in a 5-0 win April 20 as well as a 5-0 showing over Box Elder April 21.

Bountiful

Bountiful beat Northridge 5-0 April 14 with all lineup spots losing just two games overall through the five matches.

Harrison Pearce, at No. 1 singles,

beat Henry Bell 6-0, 6-0 with Zach Eyring defeating Nicholas Dearden 6-0, 6-0 and Will Tooley yielding just one game in a win over Addison Bendixsen 6-0, 6-1. In the doubles spots, Christian Ure/Covey Ure beat Jackson LaSota/Samuel Bennett 6-0, 6-1 and Thane Thompson/Lincoln Spangenberg blanked Spencer Limoges/Tyson Capps 6-0, 6-0.

The Redhawks also defeated the Knights at all seven JV positions as well.

Against Box Elder April 15, the teams were finally able to get on the court together after two previous attempts. This time, Bountiful won 5-0.

Head coach Nic Cronin particularly noted the match of Christian Ure/ Covey Ure at No. 1 doubles, which they won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

“It was a great victory for them,” said head coach Nic Cronin.

Against Woods Cross April 19, Bountiful lost 4-1. Zach Eyring had the Redhawks’ lone win at No. 2 singles, defeating Woods Cross’ Caleb Richards for the first time ever 6-2, 6-4.

Bountiful bounced back against Viewmont with a 5-0 showing April 21.

In the singles matchups, Pearce defeated Kyle Robison 6-0, 6-4; Eyring beat Curtis Robinson 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; and Pierce Moore defeated Stockton Fox 6-3, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, Christian Ure/Covey Ure beat Ashton Durrant/ Landon Kearns 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 6-2 and Thane Thompson/Lincoln Spangenberg defeated Adam Jones/Evan Zierenberg 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Kaysville City working on green space watering plan

By Cindi Mansell c.mansell@mycityjournals.com (Editor’s Note—This is one of our continuing series of stories as part of our Davis Journal Water Watchers series) n a recent interview, Kaysville Parks & Recreation Director Cole Stephens discussed the city summer watering plan for parks and flower beds considering the current drought situation. He said city staff will not be planting any annuals in city flower beds this year and there will not be any new shrubbery planted on any park property.

Stephens said a typical year would be for staff to water three times a week.

“We plan to follow the protocol as recommended by the various city secondary water providers,” he said. This includes watering two times a week during the summer season. Parks staff and the City Arborist oversee a specific aeration and fertilization process to keep areas as green as possible with as little water as possible. “The intent is to sacrifice passive areas to keep the sports fields green and available for play,” Stephens said.

The city still intends to hold its annual Arbor Day Celebration being held on Saturday, April 30, at the Angel Street Soccer Complex Arboretum at 9 a.m. Kaysville City was declared a “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation in 1998 and has held an annual Arbor Day event since then. Typically, plantings could include up to 50 new trees, but this year the intent is to plant 10 trees at the Angel Street Soccer Complex because that particular park has advanced watering methods that can accommodate the new trees. been converted to help flush out the city culinary system by watering the green space instead of flushing out fire hydrants down the storm drain.

In the last 50 years, the National Arbor Day Foundation has planted and distributed nearly 500 million trees in more than 50 countries around the world to fight global issues facing humankind. People need trees, and when planted in the right place, trees have significant impact. Trees help slow climate change, filter our air and water, foster biodiversity, and strengthen communities. They create the kind of transformational change the world needs now.

Kaysville recognizes the importance of green space, trees and foliage but “we have to balance the need for these with the current dismal water situation and do the best we can,” Stephens said. He said there are dangers for sports players associated with dead or dying grass, so the intent is to focus on those areas. He said the city parks do not water by address like the residential homes, as there is no way to water an entire large park in one night.

He said each “zone” would be run two times per week.

Kaysville has installed a computerized internal metering system on its newer parks. Staff can monitor pressure and flow 24/7, and the system can sense when there is an issue or break and automatically shut off and notify staff. Stephens and his staff manage 150 acres of green space, including 22 acres at the Kaysville City Cemetery.

He said with the water situation, the “mindset has to change, and we have to get creative on how to manage and retain our green space.” He said currently, staff is considering properties within the city where they could eliminate grass. l

Utah Figure Skating Club Ice Show is this weekend

T

he Utah Figure Skating Club (UFSC) will present The Greatest Show on Ice at the South Davis Recreation Center on April 29 and 30, with showtimes of 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on both days. The show will feature member skaters of all ages and all skill levels.

UFSC is the first skating club in Utah and is a nonprofit figure skating club based out of Bountiful. It currently has skaters ranging from age 5 to 85.

The spring show is one of the club’s most significant annual events. Proceeds will provide quality programming so young athletes can achieve their goals on the ice.

This annual spring show will feature circus-themed ice performances suitable for any age audience.

“I have been skating and have been a part of the Utah Figure Skating Club for 14 years,” said Caitlyn Anderson, a

UFSC member and US Figure Skating Moves in the Field Gold Medalist. “I was able to find a great community of people who shared the love of skating. I never went to Nationals, or the Olympics, because that was never my goal, and it wasn’t what I loved most about skating. I loved the ice shows.”

Anderson will be performing at the show as the circus singer and will be skating to the song, “Never Enough” by Loren Allred.

“I hope that the performance and the song speak to many,” she said. “You are enough. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone but yourself. Keep doing what you are passionate about and don’t stop just because someone said you aren’t good enough.”

Perhaps best known for her character’s uncanny ability to spot terror plots before they take off, “Homeland” actor Claire Danes is pivoting her on-screen talents to include mythical creatures as well.

Danes stars in the new Apple TV+ series “The Essex Serpent,” based on Sarah Perry’s fantastical historical fiction novel of the same name, as leading lady Cora Seaborne, a London widow who moves to Essex County in southeast England to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. The series, premiering Friday, May 13, comes from writer Anna Symon (“Deep Water”) and director Clio Barnard (“Dark River,” 2017) and counts Tom Hiddleston (“Loki”) and Clémence Poésy (“In Bruges,” 2008) among Danes’ costars.

Despite her practically flawless English accent, as first witnessed in Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” (1996), Claire Catherine Danes was born April 12, 1979, to American parents in New York City. Despite the fact that neither of her parents was involved in the acting world, Danes became interested in the performing arts at a young age, and thanks to her parents’ side jobs in the arts (her computer consultant father moonlit as a photographer, and her preschool teacher mother practiced visual art on the side), Danes says she always felt supported while pursuing her big-screen dreams.

After she began dance classes at the age of 6, the young star-in-themaking found herself gravitating more towards acting. She soon enrolled in a performing arts school, began taking weekend acting classes and eventually found representation. The rest, as they say, is history.

Proposals will be in accordance with drawings and specifications prepared by the City of Bountiful Engineering Department. Facts Help People Understand the World There are many difficult and confusing things going on in the world. Sometimes it is hard to know what to think.

One tip is to look for the FACTS. (Example: The house is red is a fact. The house is beautiful is an opinion.)

FACTS are pieces of information based upon things that can be measured, proven or seen by anyone.

OPINIONS describe how someone feels about a thing or event. Opinions can vary from person to person.

Look for newspaper articles that give information that you think is important for your community. Write a letter to the editor thanking them for that information. Let them know that you appreciate their freedom to report this.
