Expansion plans announced for Antelope Island education center

fter 25 years since it was first built, the visitor’s center at Antelope Island State Park is about to be renovated and expanded. A new state-of-the-art learning center is in the final design stages and construction could begin by year’s end on the site of the existing center, which was originally planned to be just the first phase of a two-phase project. Now, phase two will become a reality.

A ceremony held in the center’s amphitheater on April 8 celebrated the recent appropriation of $12 million from the Utah State Legislature for construction of the expanded center. Representatives from the Utah Division of State Parks, Davis County, and the volunteer group Friends of Antelope Island gathered for the kickoff event.

Green water in Bountiful might not be appealing but it’s safe to drink

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—Last week some Bountiful residents got an unwelcome surprise when they turned on their taps – green water. Despite the color, the city said the water is safe to drink and not that uncommon during the spring runoff.

“You see that green color during the peak times in the spring, and in a drought year you’re going to have more,” said Director of Bountiful City Water Kraig Christensen. “The water goes through plant treatment and bacteria and residuals are all fine. With the chlorine nothing can live in it that’s going to harm you. It’s just the aesthetic of the water.”

Color, smell, taste and odor are not something that is regulated as long as it is safe to drink, he said. “We’ve sent samples to Davis County, and multiple labs to test it for us. Davis County did clear all of our samples and we submitted more on Monday. Everything’s fine.”

A brand new treatment plant was built in Mueller Park in 2017-2018, said Christensen. “It has an ultra filtration system but doesn’t have charcoal like it had. It went fully online in 2018-2019.”

As the water runs over new growth, grasses and trees it picks up that color, he said. “In a drought year the reservoirs on the upper benches are all full so we’re dropping water to the lower reservoirs. That way we’re able to keep the aquifers filled on the lower part of the city which is why more people are seeing green water versus other years. The green water should last until the snow runoff starts to happen.”

in smaller quantities. More people are seeing it as opposed to other people who are used to it at this point.”

Christensen said during a severe drought they want to make sure resources are available for this year and for future use. “We want to conserve all of our resources.”

Shots fired in Woods Cross neighborhood WOODS CROSS—The Davis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident in Woods Cross after two homes and a horse trailer were shot at last week.

“Three separate calls came into us of gunshots fired in the area of the Argyle Acres neighborhood,” said Woods Cross Police Chief Chad Soffe. “Bullets were found in two houses and one was in a horse trailer in a driveway. We don’t believe it came out of the neighborhood but out west of Redwood Road.”

As part of the “More than a Flag” initiative launched

by Gov. Spencer Cox in January to create a new state flag, Utahns are being asked to submit their own design ideas or give input about colors, symbols, colors or themes. The deadline for submissions is April 30. More than 3,500 design submissions have been received so far.

n Republican county conventions held the past two weeks and in the lead-up to the June primary elections, a constant refrain has been “parental rights” in public education and medical decisions.

We’ve heard it before; it’s not the first time political parties have whipped up a frenzy prior to mid-term elections by proclaiming that parents, not government entities, should be in control of their children.

More than 100 years ago, William Jennings Bryan railed against the teaching of evolution, shouting “Who shall control our schools?” In the end, science, not fundamentalist preachers, won that battle.

Thirty years later, after Black children were admitted to previously white-only schools, Southern legislators repealed compulsory education so that white children would not have to sit next to a Black classmate. Said a South Carolina governor, “The parental right to determine what is best for their child is a fundamental-driven right.”

BY BRYAN GRAY The evolution battle centered on science while the Southern segregation focused on physical geography. In Utah, the current two-pronged fights are medical and history.

The medical aspect is pretty simple.

Of course parents have the right to decide on the vaccination of their sons and daughters but they don’t have the right to spread disease among the majority of other children. That’s why vaccination mandates for smallpox and measles have held up, even though few school districts mandated COVID vaccinations due to the delay in recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control.

But your view of parental rights might change when confronted with other medical decisions. Should a parent have the right to withhold life saving treatment of a child with leukemia? Should parents have the right to deny a blood transfusion for a child critically injured in an auto collision? Even for parental rights advocates, the right to injure your own child becomes a little less clear.

As for Critical Race Theory, my problem with opponents is that they don’t really understand the concept. In a nutshell, Critical Race Theory is that past racial attitudes and injustices still impact today’s minority students. It doesn’t say that today’s white children should feel personally guilty about what happened to a minority classmate’s ancestors, only that history should be recognized. Example: Since many communities “red-lined” neighborhoods to ensure that blacks and Latinos could not get loans to purchase houses, real estate inheritance was often non-existent, leading minorities today having less total assets than whites. That’s a fact, not theory, not race-baiting.

As a Harvard history professor wrote of CRT opponents, “These parents don’t have a right to choose the version of American history they like best.” The schools have an obligation, regardless of right-wing radical rants, to teach factual history – the good, the bad, and the ugly.

As the professor notes, with schools open and masks off, teachers are left trying to figure out not only how to repair the damage inflicted by remote learning, but also what to teach and how to teach it without losing their jobs and being harassed by parents.

No wonder schools are having a difficult time finding qualified teachers.

mas we have here today,” said Spence Kinard, a member of the Friends of Antelope Island, the organization formed in 1995 to promote the Antelope Island experience. “It’s an exciting time to realize that finally, we’re going to get a revitalized and expanded center, almost triple the size it is now. It will give us the opportunity for this building to be used for many, many events.”

Last year, the Utah Legislature appropriated $1 million for the project, but it needed a lot more financial assistance.

The Friends contacted Rep. Steve Handy (R-Layton) to solicit his assistance.

“They shared their vision of what was happening here, and said, ‘Steve, this isn’t in the governor’s budget. Can you help?’”

He said he could, introducing an RFA – request for appropriation – to the legislature for which Handy said he would be “the point of the spear. I told them I’d get this in front of the appropriators, and we have wonderful legislative leaders from Davis County who were able to carry the ball over the goal line.”

The result, the $12 million appropriation this year.

“Antelope Island’s popularity just continues to grow,” said Park Manager Jeremy Shaw, who’s been at the park for 11 years. “Improving and expanding the amenities at the park helps us to meet the increased demand while also enhancing the visitor experience.”

In 2011, about 260,000 visitors came to Antelope Island. Last year, that number was 1,074,570, making the Island the third most visited state park in Utah behind Sand Hollow State Park and Dead Horse Point State Park.

That first $1million in 2020 allowed for engineering and design of the building to begin. This new $12 million infusion

will allow for the remodel and new construction of what will be a “visitor/ learning center.”

“We recognized almost immediately after it was built that the visitors center was inadequate,” Kinard said. “It’s seriously undersized. Students come by the thousands and we’ve had no place to host or teach them. So it’s been our dream to find the money to do this remodel and expansion. We want to get the learning center, the theater and the auditorium built. We’re going to make a movie about the Island, so when people come here, they can stop at the center, watch the film, get an idea of what the island’s all about, and then go out and enjoy.”

“There have been countless hours put in by volunteers like the Friends,” said Jeff Rasmussen, director of Utah State Parks who, ironically, had his first job as a ranger on the Island. “The Friends have raised literally hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the Island and provide new opportunities for improvements. They are one of the main driving forces in making this happen.

And Representative Steve Handy has been pushing and adding his support in our efforts. We thank him for his work in making this happen.”

The current building, which is 5,100 square feet, will be remodeled and incorporated into the 15,000 square foot education center, in partnership with Weber State University, Westminster College, and with interest from the University of Utah and Utah State University. The amphitheater will be razed as part of the new construction, which could begin before year’s end. An expanded look at this project and a deeper dive into Antelope Island, its history and legacy, will appear in our monthly City Journals in May. l

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com WASHINGTON—It’s taken close to four years to create a 9-8-8 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the emergency hotline is set to go live in July.

As part of that effort, a new Bipartisan House 988 & Crisis Services Task Force was announced last week to ensure it is implemented effectively.

Congressman Chris Stewart will cochair the task force with Reps. Grace Napolitano, John Katko and Tony Dardenas.

“It’s taken so long,” Stewart said. “It should have taken six months to a year instead it’s been closer to four years.”

There’s been a heightened awareness of mental health issues since the pandemic, he said. “We’re just beginning to understand the impact it had on kids with schools shut down, social isolation and sitting in front of screens all day. One in three teens, especially girls, considered suicide. There is anxiety and depression in ways we’ve never seen before. 9-8-8 is an effective tool available for people to get the help they need.”

Utah is really prepared to implement the hotline, said Stewart. “Other states are not. The worst thing would be for someone to call 9-8-8 in a desperate situation and no one is on the phone.”

States need the funding, infrastructure, staff, law enforcement, an emergency response team and suicide or other mental health professionals in place, he said. “The task force will oversee funding at the federal level and put pressure on states to implement the hotline. We want states to collaborate with one another. A number of states have reached out and asked ‘how can you help us?’ We can put them in contact with other states.”

Utah has put in a lot of work, Stewart said. “They are ready to respond.”

Suicide is a big problem – especially among youth, he said. “We want to make people aware of this tool.”

The task force is bipartisan, said Stewart. “Mental health is not a Democrat/Republican problem. Regardless if Nancy Pelosi is the speaker or someone else, we want to make sure this doesn’t fall by the wayside even if leadership changes.” l

Safe Harbor sees uptick in sexual assault cases through the pandemic

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com DAVIS COUNTY—Safe Harbor Crisis Center typically assists about 3,000 survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence each year. This year that service has increased and they are on track to help almost 5,000.

“We saw a large number in the aftermath of the pandemic,” said Executive Director Kristen Floyd.

“People were secluded in their homes with the perpetrator so it caused more violence in the home and sexual assault increased as well.”

Maybe it’s just that people know where to go for help, she said. “I’m hopeful that sexual assault is not increasing but people seeking help is increasing.”

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Safe Harbor is hosting several events to shine a light on the subject and to support survivors. The center joined with the state on the steps of the Capitol for “Start by Believing Day” April 6.

“It originated in Utah but now it’s national,” said Floyd. “They gave five awards to agencies for individuals who have served survivors. One was our sexual assault nurse, Shawna Bryant. She’s worked with us for a couple of years now. She was recognized for doing exemplary work serving survivors.

It’s a pretty impressive award to receive.”

The next event is a Sexual Assault Awareness Conference on April 20 at the Davis Conference Center. “Our keynote speaker is Elizabeth Smart. It runs from 8 a.m – 4 p.m. and breakfast and lunch will be served. Tickets are $75 and you can register on our website (safeharborhope.org) under the events tab.”

Floyd said they will be holding a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. April 29 at Station Park. “It will be on the sidewalk by our building honoring victims of sexual assault. It’s free to anybody who wants to come. We’re at 280 West Union Avenue.”

An art expo will be held at the Bountiful Davis Arts Center on April 30. “It’s for survivors to display their artwork,” she said. “Some will be for sale and

the proceeds will go to Safe Harbor.”

The Safe Harbor resource center will be moving to its new location by the Layton Hospital – Intermountain Healthcare in June. “It’s very exciting,” said Floyd. “We’re crossing our fingers that it comes through like it’s supposed to.”

The new 6,000 square foot building is across the street from the hospital, she said. “It’s where the new fire station will be. The land was donated by IHC along with private donations and the legislature provided funds to help build the building.”

The resource center will have community advocates to help those who don’t need emergency services, said Floyd. “They’ll provide protective order assistance, housing stabilization, etc. There will also be nurse examiners and sexual assault advocates and therapists. Any victim qualifies for free therapy. We try to get them in as quickly as possible to help them work through their trauma.”

Safe Harbor provides services 24/7. “We’re always on call,” Floyd said. “If it happens day or night we’ll send out a sexual assault advocate and nurse on every call to provide wrap around services.

All services for survivors are free. We also provide family members or secondary survivors free services because they’re often impacted as well.”

Floyd said being supportive is essential. “We want people to be patient with a victim. Family members or friends want them to get out and report it that very day. But reporting it sometimes can cause more danger for them.”

Wait for them, she said. “The family needs to let them decide what’s going to be the most comfortable and safest for them.”

The services are available to anybody, said Floyd. “People think it’s just for women but that’s not the case. It can be any gender. We don’t care if they’re documented or how old they are. It’s truly a service for everyone.”

UDOT launches environmental study on I-15 from Farmington to Salt Lake

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—Anyone who drives along I-15 between Farmington and Salt Lake at rush hour knows they’ll be battling heavy traffic the whole way. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking at ways to relieve congestion in the area and has launched an environmental study on I-15 between 400 South in Salt Lake and the US-89 interchange in Farmington.

UDOT is asking for input from those who live or travel in the area to help identify transportation needs and potential solutions during a formal comment period now through May 13.

“UDOT’s mission is to improve the quality of life through transportation,” said Tiffany Pocock, I-15 Project Manager. “In order to do that we have started an environmental study along I-15. We’re aware that Utah is growing and more people are going to be traveling along the corridor. This study aims to look at the needs and really assess what I-15 needs are for the future. Once we understand the needs for the corridor we’ll then start to look at potential solutions.”

Pocock said UDOT will be looking at existing or future interchanges, access to transit and how the community

lives and breathes in the area. “We want to make sure we’re providing access for all modes of transportation including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. We have drafted what we think the needs are for the corridor, however, we’d really like the public who live and travel there to come and comment on what they think the needs are for the future.”

Better mobility promotes good health and stronger community connections, she said. “It’s also the backbone of a strong economy. If any of these changes are going to affect you or your life please comment and let us know what you think. The study will continue into 2024 so stay

Mattress/Box Springs recycling program starts in Davis County

A

mericans dispose of an estimated 20 million mattresses and box springs every year and the vast majority end up in landfills or incinerators. That's roughly 55,000 discarded each and every day. They contribute 450 million pounds of waste and fill more than 100 million cubic feet of landfill space every year, according to a national survey by the mattress recycling council.

The Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District in Layton has created a program to help with that. This spring, it began a mattress/box spring recycling program, accepting them from customers at the landfill for a $10 fee, then deconstructing them and recycling each component separately. This keeps the material out of the landfill and subsequently helps extend its life.

“The customers are informed that the mattresses and box springs will be deconstructed,” said Nathan Rich, CEO and Executive Director of Wasatch Integrated. “The fee covers the cost of the recycling which is done locally at Recycle It.” He said customers can also contact Recycle It directly by calling Will Able at 385-499-7175, or by visiting the facility at 2811 North Fairfield Road in Layton. Mattresses are not accepted at the district thrift store.

Designer chosen for Washington Park skatepark

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—California-based Spohn Ranch, which has been designing skate parks for over 30 years, has been awarded the contract for the Washington Park skatepark in Bountiful. The firm was one of four being considered for the project, which will be part of the new park being built on the site of the old Washington Elementary School.

The Los Angeles company has designed municipal skatepark projects in more than 40 states and 15 countries, and includes a variety of corporate clients in its portfolio, including Red Bull and Vans. Founder and president Aaron Spohn and his family are avid skateboard enthusiasts.

“We solicited proposals from 11 designers, and narrowed our four respondents down to two,” said city engineer Lloyd Cheney. “Each firm has constructed several skateparks in Utah, and each was highly recommended. We selected Spohn Ranch based on their

familiarity with the skating community in the area, consideration of specific construction techniques and details, and the proposed fee.”

Spohn’s contract is for $28,500.

City manager Gary Hill said the next step will be for Spohn Ranch to hold some public outreach to get an idea from the user community of what they want in a skatepark.

“We anticipate having a design about the same time in June that we have for the rest of the park – a final design and engineer drawings so we can build them together.”

Spohn Ranch’s design-build completed a 12,000 square foot skatepark in Tom’s River, New Jersey that opened in December. That park features a unique bowl with a waterfall, curved extension as well as a beginner-friendly mini-ramp section. There are also a variety of street elements and multiple ledge variations.

Fourth grader thrives despite living with rare genetic disorder

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com WOODS CROSS—Rylie Evans is a happy, active 9- year -old who loves to act, dance and swim. She also has Neurofibromatosis, also known as NF, a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerve endings throughout the body. One in 3,000 people have it and there is no known cure.

“Rylie has bilateral optic nerve gliomas,” said Rylie’s mother, Brandie.

“It grows on the nerves that affect her vision. It’s not cancer but it progresses really fast. She has lost the vision in her left eye. The doctor said she’ll never regain her vision in the left eye but she has 20/20 vision in the right.”

It’s been a long journey for the Evans family starting when Rylie was

a baby. “When she was born there were no signs that anything was wrong,” said Brandie. “We started seeing what we thought were birthmarks. When the doctor saw them we were told to take her to Primary Children’s.”

She started a chemotherapy protocol two days after her second birthday that continued for about a year, Brandie said.

“At two she didn’t have a whole lot of hair. It did start thinning but she didn’t lose all of it. She was sick on and off and lost some weight. It made her blood counts go down so it was kind of like quarantining; she had to stay indoors for about two weeks every month.”

Brandie said it was hard to watch her baby go through that. “It’s almost harder though as she’s gotten older. She didn’t know what was happening when she was two but now she knows when she has to miss school or can’t do dance.”

There are also learning disabilities with NF, said Brandie. “The pandemic caused her to fall further behind. As she gets older there are book reports, etc.

She’s increasingly aware that she’s not the same as everyone else.”

The Evans family are Woods Cross residents and the city council adopted a resolution declaring May NF month at their last meeting. “One of the great benefits of that is you know people are looking out for you. It’s also for education that there are people struggling with the disorder. It gets information out in the community.”

Brandie said they found out through the city newsletter that there was someone else in Woods Cross with NF. “They go to our school and we didn’t even know. It gives kids a sense of community that they’re not walking through this life alone, which has really been important.”

There is also an NF specialist based out of Primary’s, she said. “We couldn’t have gotten more lucky to have the hospital and doctor in our backyard. A lot of people move here for care.”

Rylie is now in the monitoring stage, said Brandie. “She goes in every six months. In the next two years they'll probably do a full body MRI to see if there are more tumors.”

The Evans family also has a little boy. “We had him tested and he does not have NF,” Brandie said. “Rylie’s is spontaneous. She’s all on her own in this one.”

NF is different for every single person, said Brandie. “It doesn’t stop them from being successful.”

Rylie does remarkably well, Brandie said. “She’s never known any different.

She’s pretty incredible. I call her my NF hero.” l

Air Show returns to Hill Air Force Base HILL AIR FORCE BASE—After missing the last few years due to COVID, the popular Warriors Over the Wasatch Air & Space Show will return this summer on June 25-26 at HAFB. With about a 100 days to go, event organizers officially announced the performer line up for this year’s show.

“This year’s event will feature some of the same top aerial performers that audiences have come to expect from the Hill air show,” said Lt. Col. Jay Michaels, 75th Operations Support Squadron commander and Hill air show director. “The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team will be headlining and for the first time since the team stood up at Hill, the F-35A Demonstration Team will be performing at its home air show.”

First graduating class of Redhawks leave their mark

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—When the Bountiful High School Braves mascot transitioned to the Redhawks last year, Principal Aaron Hogge promised the graduating class would be the Braves. Now a year later, the senior class will be the first to graduate as Redhawks. To commemorate the historic moment, students left their thumb print on a mural of a Redhawk in the school library.

“Averie McPheters is the artist,” said Librarian Telesa Nicholes. “She painted a mural earlier this year. We thought of creating a senior mural to somehow let them leave their mark graduating as Redhawks.”

Nicholes said she’s seen other libraries with displays like this. “We

decided to put our own creative spin on it.”

About half of the seniors had added to it as of Monday. “I’m thinking there will be about 400 kids that will put their thumb print on it. Some made the print look like the feathers. It was cute, one student put his at the bottom so he’d know where it is and could find it again.”

“It (the change) didn’t matter to me that much,” said senior Jordan Bunderson.

“I don’t go to many events,” said senior Delta Ackerson. “I do marching band at Viewmont so I didn’t understand the background at first.”

“It was kind of hard,” said senior Kailey Bringhurst. “I was proud to be a Brave. But it’s cool to be the first graduating class of Redhawks.”l

The Whitaker begins annual storytelling series

CENTERVILLE—The Whitaker museum’s monthly storytelling series “Keeping Our Stories Alive” will be held the second Tuesday evening of the month through October at Centerville City Hall, 250 N. Main.

In 1994 the city of Centerville purchased the historic family home of Thomas and Elizabeth Whitaker, who were some of the first residents of Centerville, and turned it into a heritage muse-

STEM Summer Day Camp set at WSU Davis Campus

The YMCA of Northern Utah is holding specialty Summer Day Camps for Davis County kids to focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). They will be held at the Weber State University Davis Campus, 2750 University Park Blvd. in Layton. There are sessions for beginners ages 5-8, and advanced ages 8-12.

There are a total of 10 sessions, each running for a week, with specialized instructors and experts in their fields to provide hands-on demonstrations and activities. Camp days include a morning and afternoon snack, and lunch

The first session runs June 6-10 and serves as a kickoff event for the camps. Subject titles for the remaining sessions include Mad Scientist, Out of This World, Dinosaur Week, Harry Potter Week, Builder’s Week, STEM Olympics, Zoology Week, Coding Week, and a wrap-up session called Greatest Hits.

Local students among WSU forensic champions

wo students from Davis County are members of the Weber State University Speech team that was recently crowned National Online Forensics Champions, beating out 49 other universities for the title.

Rae Alder of Centerville and Bex Baggett of Farmington will join their teammates for the Comprehensive Finals to be held April 14-20 in Chicago.

“This is a huge feather in our cap for a new and upcoming team,” Mark Galaviz, the team’s head coach, said.

“The dedication it takes for a team to compete against the likes of Cal State, Bowling Green, Texas State and the University of California is immense, and our students exemplify that work.”

This year has seen Weber State maintain its Gold Medal program status in the region (only two schools qualify for this honor in the Pacific

Northwest, northern California and Utah.) At every tournament the team has attended this year, it has placed in the top four.

In addition to the team title, Alder was named national champion of After Dinner Speaking and placed third overall in poetry. Baggett took second place overall in Individual Sweeps, gold in Extemporaneous Speaking, gold in Duo Interpretation, bronze in IPDA debate and bronze in Program Oral Interpretation “Speech and Debate gives me the opportunity to work on my advocacy and interpersonal communication skills,” said Jazmyne Olson of Clinton, a team member. “I love being able to engage in discourse with other college students across the country on different issues from job outsourcing to representation in the media.”

On April 23 at 6 p.m. in the Elizabeth Hall Auditorium in Ogden, the team will celebrate its yearlong success with an event for students to showcase their best presentations.

New director named at USU Extension

eidi LeBlanc has been named the new director for Utah State University Extension’s Home and Community Department. She replaces Margie Memmott, who recently retired after nearly 40 years of service to USU Extension.

LeBlanc is an Extension professor and director of both the Create Better Health program and the Hunger Solutions Institute. She has been part of the Farmers Feeding Utah program, developed in 2020, where food was donated to the program and also purchased from Utah farmers whose supply chains and livelihoods were disrupted by the pandemic. It has helped feed over 42,000 families in need with 2 million pounds of food through 29 events across Utah.

She will continue her work as director of Create Better Health and

LeBlanc has worked for USU Extension for nearly 24 years, most recently with Create Better Health (SNAP-Ed) formerly known as Food $ense, which offers classes to expand participants’ knowledge of nutrition, budgeting, cooking, food safety, and physical activity. Prior to that, she was a San Juan County faculty member for seven years.

LeBlanc developed the Hunger Solutions Institute in 2018 after learning about a similar program at Auburn State University in 2014.

Red Cross opens Support Desk at HAFB

he American Red Cross of Utah has opened its first ever service desk at Hill Air Force Base, providing in-person assistance to active military, veterans, and their families – and becoming a permanent part of the base community.

For decades, the Red Cross Service to the military program has been supporting Hill Air Force Base, the second largest U.S. Air Force base with a large population of Active-Duty Military, Reservists, Veterans, and their families.

“Military families faced numerous challenges over the past year,” said Dee Dodwell, Red Cross of Utah Service to the Armed Forces/International Services Director. “Through it all, the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces was there to help in ways big and small, by providing relief and resources to service members, veterans, their families, and caregivers.”

The Service Desk is staffed entirely by Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces volunteers, providing support to the military community in the base’s Customer Support Center.

The desk will be staffed on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

For beekeepers in Davis County, here’s some news to keep you buzzing. Utah honey production for 2021 from those with five or more colonies totaled 1.02 million pounds, up 7 percent from 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

There were 31,000 colonies producing honey in the state last year, up 11 percent from the year before. Yield per colony averaged 33 pounds, a slight dip from 34 pounds in 2020. Utah honey prices increased last year to $2.18 per pound, higher than the 2020 price of $2.02 per pound.

United States honey production in 2021 totaled 126 million pounds, down 14 percent from 2020. There were 2.70 million colonies producing honey in 2021, down slightly from 2020. Yield per colony averaged 46.9 pounds, down 14 percent from the 54.5 pounds in 2020. Colonies which produced honey in more than one state were counted in each state where the honey was produced.

Therefore, at the United States level yield per colony may be understated,

but total production would not be impacted. Colonies were not included if honey was not harvested.

Producer honey stocks were 23.5 million pounds on Dec. 15, 2021, down 41 percent from a year earlier.

Stocks held by producers exclude those held under the commodity loan program.

United States honey prices increased 21 percent during 2021 to $2.54 per pound, compared to $2.10 per pound in 2020. United States and state level prices reflect the portions of honey sold through cooperatives, private, and retail channels. Prices for each color class are derived by weighting the quantities sold for each marketing channel. Prices for the 2020 crop reflect honey sold in 2020 and 2021. Some 2020 crop honey was sold in 2021, which caused some revisions to the 2020 crop prices.

The average prices paid in 2021 for honey bee queens, packages, and nucs were $20, $91, and $125 respectively. Pollination income for 2021 was $269 million, up 6 percent from 2020. Other income from honey bees in 2021 was $102 million, up 82 percent from 2020. l

n Davis County, while most students were taking time off for spring break last week, some local high school baseball teams saw plenty of action on the field.

Region play took a pause for the week off school, but some non-league matchups and tournaments took place.

Farmington

The Phoenix began this week with a 2-4 overall record, having finished a three-game series with Weber on April 1. On April 6, Farmington squared off with one of the state’s top teams, the Lone Peak Knights of Region 4.

Though Farmington entered the

game at 5-6 and Lone Peak at 7-1, the Phoenix prevailed in an upset, 5-4.

Lone Peak controlled the contest most of the way, leading 3-0 as the bottom of the sixth inning began. That’s when Farmington scored five runs to go ahead. In the seventh, the Knights managed a run, but the Phoenix allowed no more to preserve the win.

Landon Tanner was the winning pitcher, while Landon Day had two RBI and a double. Easton Wight had an RBI, and Mason Cook recorded a double. The four runs were the fewest the Phoenix had allowed since giving up just three on March 19 against Pleasant Grove.

Farmington is back in Region 1 action this week. On Thursday and Friday, the Phoenix host Clearfield before

playing on the road against the same opponent on Saturday.

Bountiful

The Redhawks spent their spring break in sunny California, playing four games between April 2 and 6. Bountiful went 1-3 in the tournament to bring its record to 6-4 overall.

After losing to San Juan Hills 8-4 on April 4, the Redhawks suffered a 3-0 shutout at the hands of Woodbridge, California, on April 5.

The Redhawks closed out the tournament with a 3-1 win over University City, California, on April 6. In the big victory, Truman Duryea provided some timely offense. The senior outfielder had a triple and an RBI. Teammate Hank Tippetts had an RBI, while pitch-

Hunters can weigh in on proposed decrease in deer permits

T

he Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is once again recommending a decrease in the number of general-season deer hunting permits.

The division is seeking feedback from the public at a series of meetings in April.

The reason – Utah’s severe drought, according to Big Game Coordinator Covy Jones of the DWR. “We’ve had several years of drought and are still facing ongoing extreme drought conditions in the state, which has a significant impact on the survival rates of deer,” Jones said. “We currently have more demand for deer hunting in Utah than we have the supply for. While it is antlerless deer permits, not buck permits, that impact deer population numbers, we are recommending a decrease for both types of permits. We use the data and management plans to make proactive recommendations for the herd health of our wildlife.”

The current management plan is to have over 400,000 deer across the state. The latest estimate shows that at 305,700 in Utah currently. So to bring those levels back up, DWR biologists recommend a total of 73,075 general-season deer hunting permits this year, a decrease of 950 from last year. Jones said there are 29 total deer hunting units across the state, and 13 of them are recommended for decreased permit numbers.

“The number of permits we’re proposing for 2022 will help us achieve or maintain the objectives detailed in Utah’s mule deer management plan for harvest size, animal quality and hunting opportunity,” Jones said.

DWR biologists are also recommending adding one new antlerless deer hunt to address damage to agricultural areas caused by deer.

Five new antlerless elk hunts are also being proposed, as well as a new doe pronghorn hunt.

“Antlerless deer hunts are designed to reduce depredation on private lands, tackle urban deer issues, address chronic wasting disease hot spot areas, and to help slow the decline of range conditions,” Jones said.

Elk are impacted differently by drought because survival of adults typically remains high, while pregnancy rates have been shown to decline during extreme drought conditions. DWR biologists typically do a census on the state’s elk units on a three-year rotation. This year, the northern parts of the state were surveyed, and elk populations actually slightly increased in some of those areas since they didn’t experience the same extreme drought conditions as some of the central and southern portions of the state. Much of the rest of the state, including central, southern and southeastern Utah, have elk populations that are at or slightly below their population objectives. As a result, DWR biologists are recom-

Bountiful Lake:

Fishing is fair. DWR spring trout stocking typically begins in early March and continues through June. Trout catch rates are good to great during these spring months. Use a nightcrawler fished below a bobber, or trout dough bait fished off the bottom or behind a casting bubble. Lures such as inline spinners, casting spoons or marabou jigs, and streamers like Pistol Pete flies, wooly buggers and leach patterns, can also be effective.

Deer Creek Reservoir:

Fishing is reported to be fair. The main boat ramp and the Island day-use area boat ramp are open and ice free.

Shore anglers report fair to good trout fishing using Berkley Atomic Teaser Jigs, marabou jigs, and inline spinners

with a slow retrieve. Boat and handlaunch report good trout fishing using trolling pop gear and a worm, pink or green/chartreuse squid rigs tipped with worm or Berkley Gulp Maggot, spoons behind a flasher/dodger. Fly anglers are doing well drift trolling balanced leech fly patterns using an intermediate sinking line.

East Canyon Reservoir and State Park:

Fishing is fairly good. Trout fishing, for both boat and shore anglers, is usually best in shallow to midwater depths in the spring. For shore anglers, try fishing trout dough bait or a worm off the bottom in shallow water. Boat anglers can do well trolling shallow to medium-diving crank baits or a pop gear and a worm or a squid and dodger combination.

As the water warms, smallmouth bass fishing will pick up along shallow rocky areas, especially in the afternoon when the water has had a chance to warm up close to shore

Farmington Pond:

Fishing is fair. As at Bountiful Lake, DWR spring trout stocking typically begins in early March and continues through June. Trout catch rates are good

to great during these spring months. Use a nightcrawler fished below a bobber, or trout dough bait fished off the bottom or behind a casting bubble. Jordanelle Reservoir:

Fishing is good. Open water is present from Hallstone south to the dam and into the Provo arm/Rock Cliff section.

The PWC boat ramp is ice free, but some pockets of ice still exist in some areas.

Use extreme caution.

Kaysville Ponds:

Fishing is fair. As at Bountiful Lake, DWR spring trout stocking typically begins in early March and continues through June. Trout catch rates are good to great during these spring months. Use a nightcrawler fished below a bobber, or trout dough bait fished off the bottom or behind a casting bubble. Lures such as inline spinners, casting spoons or marabou jigs, and streamers like Pistol Pete flies, wooly buggers and leach patterns, can also be effective.

Pineview Reservoir:

Fishing is poor. Fishing for small-

mouth and largemouth bass will start picking up this month as the weather warms. Casting and retrieving spinnerbaits, plastics and suspending crank baits, parallel to shore, can be an effective way to catch them. Smallmouth bass are mostly found near rocky areas, while both species may be found near points or brushy habitat. Fishing for crappie will pick up in early Mary as the fish move in shallow to spawn. For crappie, try fishing a small 1/8 ounce jig tipped with a piece of worm under the bobber.

Strawberry Reservoir:

Fishing is fair to good. The majority of ice is still tick over much of the reservoir, but the edges are starting to deteriorate and are “soupy” or “slushy,” as anglers like to call them. Use extreme caution if you are on the reservoir.

Anglers are reporting finicky fish and light bites, but those using electronics and sensitive rods are reporting good success. Anglers are reporting increased success fishing off the bottom in 30 to 40 feet of water.

Willard Bay:

Fishing is slow to fair. Through mid April, fishing for walleye will be good in shallow water as they come to spawn.

Antler auction set to begin April 25 A n auction will be held later this month to sell hundreds of antlers and furs that Utah Division of Wildlife Resources conservation officers have seized during poaching investigations or otherwise got possession of during the past six years. This will be the first time the auction has been held since 2016.

A public preview for the auction will be held on Monday, April 25, from 2-6 p.m. at the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range at 6000 W. 2100 South in Salt Lake City. The public is invited to do a walk-through to see the hundreds of ant-

lers, dozens of bobcat furs and various other items – including some forfeited bows and traps – that will be auctioned.

The auction will be held online through the TNT Auction website (tntauction.com) starting the afternoon of April 25 and will close April 26. All items must be paid for and removed from the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range facility grounds by 7 p.m. on April 26.

‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ a return to form for the series

A

t least it’s better than the last “Fantastic Beasts” movie.

Though it never quite manages to justify its existence, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” does manage to course correct from the grim slog that came before it. This is due in large part to the welcome return of sweetness, humor, and a considerably higher dose of the titular fantastic beasts. While the story is still overly complicated and distracted by the nuances of wizardly politics, there’s some genuine enjoyment to be found.

Unfortunately, that’s after a little bit of an abrupt start. The movie takes for granted that the audience remembers everything about the last two movies and everything ever written about Dumbledore’s life, dropping us right into the story without any kind of

exposition. Various plots from the last two movies are continued, along with a new quest for a magical creature that was once used to choose the leaders of the wizarding world.

Though it’s little more than a convenient plot device, it also allows Newt (Eddie Redmayne) to spend some real time with the magical animals he loves so much. His character works best when he’s allowed to be the Wizard Steve Irwin, and one of the funniest sequences of the movie comes when he’s given the chance to do just that. More humor comes from giving Newt’s muggle friend Jacob (Dan Fogler) more to do. Fogler is a delight every moment he’s onscreen, and this movie makes much better use of him than the last one did. He’s more of a main player than ever before, and thankfully he hasn’t lost even a little bit of his comic timing.

He also hasn’t lost any of his

sweetness, particularly when it comes to his relationship with his currently estranged girlfriend, Queenie (Alison Sudol). Though their relationship isn’t the main part of the story, every interaction between the two of them were perfectly pitched. Add a wonderful performance by Sudol, who did an excellent job overcoming some of the pitfalls the plot handed her, and they were easily the heart of the movie.

Her sister Tina (Katherine Waterston) might have also been involved in that emotional heart, both with Queenie and Tina’s prospective boyfriend Newt. Unfortunately, the once-major character was in less than five minutes of the movie, thrown in at the last moment with only a few lines of dialogue.

Though no official reason is given for this, it’s hard not to notice that this happened after Waterston started speaking out about J.K. Rowling’s political choices. Retaliation by Rowling

seems the most likely cause, and the absence damages the movie.

Johnny Depp’s absence, on the other hand, is welcome. Mads Mikkelsen is a much better Grindelwald, and certain scenes with him and Dumbledore (Jude Law) simply wouldn’t have worked with Depp in their place. Still, he and his people take up too much of the plot, and the movie still hasn’t quite managed to make me care about his and Dumbledore’s past.

Still, there are some moments in the movie that generate real magic.

That’s more than I’ve been able to say about the “Fantastic Beasts” series for awhile now.

FX Entertainment president Eric Schrier has said that creators Rob McElhenney (“Mythic Quest”) and Glenn Howerton (“The Strangers,” 2008) never seem to get tired of writing new episodes, and viewers don’t get tired of watching them, so FX will never get tired of paying for them.

“The guys have been doing it for so long,” Schrier told Deadline.com. “As long as they feel that they creatively can maintain its vibrancy, they want to continue to do it. Creatively, the show is excellent, and we think the last season was as strong as ever. The fans love the show, so we’ll keep going as long as as they want to keep it going.”

Actor Ansel Elgort, born and raised in Manhattan, is now best known for his role as Tony in Stephen Spielberg’s 2021 remake of Arthur Laurents’ 1957 musical “West Side Story.” But even before he wowed audiences with his powerful vocals in that box office hit, Elgort was on Hollywood’s radar as one of North America’s next rising stars.

This week, fans can catch Elgort in the season finale of HBO Max’s “Tokyo Vice,” a crime drama following young western journalist Jake Adelstein (Elgort) as he takes on a story for a Tokyo publication and finds himself going head-to-head with the city’s biggest crime boss. The final episode airs Thursday, April 28, on HBO Max. The young star — today he’s a stillyoung 28 — got his on-screen beginning as Tommy Ross in Kimberly Peirce’s (“Stop-Loss,” 2008) 2013 remake of Stephen King’s debut novel, “Carrie,” before catapulting into stardom with three films in 2014: “Divergent,” “Men, Women & Children” and, perhaps most notably, “The Fault in Our Stars,” the young adult drama adaptation from author John Green and director Josh Boone (“The Stand”).

Since then, Elgort has become well known for his trademark almondshaped eyes, height (he’s six-footfour) and seemingly endless confidence — the latter of which has previously landed him in hot water online and in person, and has left some filmgoers divided on his personality off screen. Regardless of this, however, there is no denying that Elgort has a talent for intricate and diverse roles.

OBITUARIES Margie McIntire Matich Nov. 11, 1928 – April 11, 2022

Margie McIntire Matich was born at home on Nov. 11, 1928, in Price, Utah.

She passed away on April 11, 2022, at home in Murray, Utah, from complications resulting from a fall where she fractured her hip two weeks ago. She was surrounded in her final days by as much love as her family could shower her with.

Margie was the daughter of William Mathis McIntire, Price Chief of Police, and Zelma Harmon McIntire, a loving stay at home mom. She was number 10 of 11 children, five sisters and five brothers. She grew up during the depression, but always said she only knew of the love that filled their modest home, not want.

She spent a short time living in the Beehive House (Brigham Young’s home) in downtown Salt Lake City after high school, when it was a boarding house for girls. She also moved to California to work for a time until her high school sweetheart Joseph “Joe” Junior Matich came to California and whisked her

back to Utah. They were married on Sept. 30, 1949, and they started their family in Helper, Utah.

First came Jodie Lynn in 1951, then Michael in 1953. Their little family moved to Salt Lake City in 1955 to be closer to doctors that could help them with their sweet Jodie Lynn that was having health problems. It was discovered that Jodie had a rare childhood cancer. Margie developed skills as she cared for her little one that would bless the lives of countless people later in her life. Jodie Lynn passed away at age 7 in 1959.

Margie worked at an ice cream shop in Salt Lake for a while and then became a nurse’s assistant. She worked on the Polio team at the old state hospital.

They required the nurses to take a turn in the iron lung so that they would know what that experience felt like for their patients. She recalled being so worried about bringing the disease home to her small children that she would change clothes on the back porch each time she

came home to try and lessen the exposure. She always remembered the many patients that she took care of.

Pamela joined their family in 1962 right after they moved into their new home and then four years later Bonni Jo arrived in 1966. Their family was finally complete. She worked for the trucking industry for several years until Joe was offered a position in Denver, CO as Senior Vice President of Rio Grande Motor Way. Following Mike’s marriage to Torri Martin, they packed up Pam and Bonni and headed for Denver. Margie became a stay-at-home mom during most of the girls’ young growing up years, but later got her Real Estate License. She loved working with first time home buyers and was a very successful agent.

When Joe retired the two of them moved back to Salt Lake City to be closer to family where they were caring and supportive grandparents. They attended events and cheered the grandchildren on in everything they did. They were always so proud of each one of them and their accomplishments.

Margie used her acquired care giving skills to bless the lives of many of her siblings in their last days, lovingly making them as comfortable as possible.

She dropped everything at the drop of a hat to be there for them and for their families. She was also an amazing hostess. Everyone was welcomed into her home and treated like family. Her hospitality was unrivaled and people that visited, left feeling like part of the family.

In her later years she loved visits from her great grandchildren. She wanted to hold and love on all the new babies.

Lots of time was spent on her lap being tickled and snuggling and they loved the rides they got sitting on her walker as she walked around the house.

Margie is survived by her son Michael Matich (Torri), daughter Pam Lindsay (Brent) and daughter Bonni Jo Rascon (Dan). She was a beloved Grandma to Brandon Matich (Andrea), Chris Matich (Amber), Jonny Matich (Maria), Corban Lindsay (Rachel), Joe Lindsay, Ryan Lindsay (Shannon), Amy Lindsay (Justin), Marissa Lindsay, Derek Rascon (Courtney), Emily Bennion (Joe), Anthony Rascon (Alyssa), Leena Bates (Bailey) and Kayla Purcell (Taylor). She was blessed with 16 great grandchildren, Trey, Cooper, Grant, Ivvy, Allison, Olivia,

Gemma, Eleanor, Jude, Ila, William, Jane, Ashton, Malia, Amelia, and James.

She also has countless nieces and nephews that love her and will miss her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Junior Matich, daughter Jodie Lynn Matich, parents William and Zelma McIntire, and in-laws Joseph and Dorothy Matich plus all 10 of her siblings and many dear friends. We take great comfort as we think of the joyful reunion that happened in heaven on April 11, 2022.

The family would like to thank Inspirion Hospice for their support during a difficult time. Also, a special thank you to our angle Florence Maurice who was lovingly there for us and for our mother every time we called for help. We don’t know what we would have done without her.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 16 at 11 a.m. at the LDS Chapel at 6350 South Rodeo Lane, Salt Lake City UT 84121.

Michael Donaldson Brown Jan. 13, 1955 – April 9, 2022

Farmington, UT—Michael Donaldson Brown, age 67, passed away on April 9, 2022 after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. Michael was born Jan. 13, 1955 in Ogden. He was the fourth of six children born to Ruth Donaldson Brown and Loa Virgil Brown. They raised their family in South Ogden. Ruth and Loa instilled a strong love of learning, higher education, family, service, and hard work into their children.

Michael attended Bonneville High School where he met and fell in love with Jan Hendricks. She was his high school sweetheart and they were together for 50 years. He played high school basketball and football and served as a full-time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Sydney, Australia mission under President Earl C. Tingey.

After returning home from his mission, Michael and Jan were sealed for time and all eternity in the Ogden Utah Temple on Sept. 18, 1976.

Michael began studies at Weber State College and played as a forward for the basketball team with Coach McCarthy while completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology.

After his undergraduate work, Michael completed his doctorate degree at Pacific University in Oregon and became a private practice Optometrist in the Salt Lake valley. He loved his patients and cared deeply for their well-being, providing excellent eye care for 38 years.

Together Michael and Jan worked to build his private practice, Mountain West Eyecare and was proud to turn the reins over to his youngest daughter, Bethany Gillett in May 2020, once she graduated as an Optometrist from the same university he had attended.

Michael and Jan started their family early and lost their first son, Benjamin Michael shortly after his birth. Five years later they welcomed their first daughter Brittany and then Brennen, Bryce and Bethany into the family. They raised their four children in Bountiful and as empty nesters moved to Farmington to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed serving together as temple workers in the Bountiful Temple.

Michael also served as a counselor in the bishopric, several times as a young men’s leader, nursery leader, gospel doctrine teacher and temple worker.

in sports and was a great outdoorsman.

He loved to be in nature and enjoyed spending time with his family at “Papa’s Forest” – the family’s property in the beautiful Uintah Mountains. His favorite vacations were spent at a lake boating with his family. Michael and Jan opened their home to family, friends, and strangers. All were welcomed in the Brown home and Michael loved to “hang out” with whomever was around. He wanted everyone to feel loved and accepted. He was slow to judge others and quick to give and share his resources, time, and talents. He truly understood the power of reaching out to the one. He put his dear wife, his family, and the gospel of Jesus Christ at the center of his life.

Michael is survived by wife Jan; daughters Brittany (Spencer) Walker and Bethany (Colton) Gillett; sons Brennen (Jocelyn) Brown and Bryce (Allyson) Brown; 11 grandchildren with one grandson due May 2022; and siblings Loy (Luann) Brown, Michelle (Steve) Barker, Stacey (Walt) Gilmore, and Carol (Curtis) Tanner. Michael is preceded in death by his infant son Benjamin Michael, his sister Robin, his parents, and brother-inlaw Jeff Cazier.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday April 16, 2022, at the Farmington Bay Stake Center, 549 S. 1525 W., Farmington, UT 84025.

Friends and family may visit Friday April 15, 2022, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 1941 N. Main, Farmington, or Saturday 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., at the Stake Center.
