OLD TESTAMENT TABERNACLE TRAVELING REPLICA OPENS IN BOUNTIFUL

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—Families and individuals from all faiths will have the opportunity to go back to Old Testament times as a traveling lifesize replica of an ancient Tabernacle dating back 400 years to Moses’ time makes its way through Bountiful. The building sits on the grounds of the Bountiful Tabernacle at 55 S. Main Street and will be open for tours starting April 4.

“It’s going to be a fabulous event,” said Craig Brown, who is overseeing the event. “It’s built to scale using the best information to create an authentic Old Testament Tabernacle.”

There are eight stations where participants can learn about the symbolism and how it points to Jesus Christ, he said. “I get my own impressions as I read the Old Testament and this brings it to life. There

are also ties to modern day temples as well.”

The eight stations cover the following topics: • Overview – Camp of Israel.

The pattern of the Tabernacle taught holiness, cleanliness, and the pathway back to the Lord’s presence.

• The Gate. It was the only entrance to the Courtyard of the Tabernacle located on the East, as was the entrance to the Garden of Eden.

• Altar of Sacrifice. Made of brass, for burnt, peace, sin and trespass offerings.

• Laver of Water. The Laver was made of brass and from the mirrors of the Israelites. It was located before the Tabernacle entrance called the Door.

• Holy Place. The first room of the Tabernacle tent, which was only entered into by the High Priest or assigned priest.

• Holy of Holies. The last room, only half the size of the Holy Place.

• Tabernacle Coverings – in the Visitor’s Center. The Tabernacle building had four coverings that testified how the Lord protects and saves his people.

• High Priest Clothing – in the Visitor’s Center. Sacred clothing is worn to set the wearer apart and symbolically gives reminders and protections.

“There’s a tremendous amount of information to see and learn,” said Brown. “The tours will be about an hour long. It starts out with a 10 minute video and ends in the cultural hall of the Bountiful Tabernacle with displays of ancient and modern temples.”

The replica started in California, he said. “The Layton mission president was the stake president in Huntington Beach and he’s the one who had contacts there and made connections to have it here.”

The tours are staffed by volunteers and run April 4 – May 5 from 9 a.m – 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. on

Sundays, where a Spanish speaking tour will also be available. “We’ll have six missionaries who can speak with our Spanish speaking brothers and sisters,” said Brown. Tickets are free but required and can be found at tabernacle2022.com.

“We expect 30,000-50,000 people,” he said. “We’ll manage the line and keep it flowing so there’s not an hour long wait.”

In conjunction with the Tabernacle tour, organizers are hosting an interfaith fireside on April 24 at the Bountiful Regional Center 835 N. 400 East, North Salt Lake from 6-8 p.m. “It will also be broadcast like (General) Conference,” Brown said.

“There are only 2,200 seats and 17,000 people participated in our fireside on March 20 that was also broadcast.”

At the April 24 fireside, people from different faiths will tell what the Tabernacle means to them, he said. “We’ll have a Muslim leader, a Jewish rabbi, a Catholic priest, a Protestant minister and Dr. Donald Parry, a professor from BYU. They’ll take 10 minutes a piece to talk about why we need to be unified instead of fighting against each other and show that we all share common beliefs about this sacred building.”

After it leaves Bountiful it will move to Layton and Syracuse.

Rollover on I-15 kills one, injures two WEST BOUNTIFUL—An accident on I-15 Monday evening killed the driver of a Dodge Grand Caravan and injured two others when she overcorrected and rolled the vehicle.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, at about 9:45 p.m. March 28 the Caravan was traveling southbound on I-15 prior to 500 South in West Bountiful.

A witness said he saw the Dodge suddenly exit off the freeway to the 500 South off-ramp, cut slightly through the gore back onto the off-ramp. The driver overcorrected and rolled over several times in the weeded area between the off-ramp and main flow.

The adult female driver died and an adult male passenger was ejected and sustained severe injuries.

A 13-year-old female passenger had minor injuries.

Both the adult male and 13-year-old were taken to local hospitals, authorities said.

Investigators are working to determine what factors contributed to the crash.

The complaint alleges her son was called a “cotton picker” and told to give an “N-word pass” so students could harass him with racial comments.

The suit also claims the boy was singled out by a white teacher for misconduct during a school assembly, alleging a white student had slapped him but he was the one who got in trouble.

The district came under fire last October after a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation found “widespread racial discrimination.” Part of the agreement with the DOJ called for racial harassment and discriminatory training of its employees and creating an Office of Equal Opportunity.

“We cannot comment on pending litigation,” a district statement said. “However, the Davis School District is taking extensive steps since entering an agreement with the Department of Justice to eliminate racial harassment and discrimination at all levels. The district takes all complaints of racial discrimination and harassment seriously and handles each with as much care and compassion as possible.”

The suit, filed in Salt Lake City U.S. District Court asks for monetary damages and a mandate that the district must act quickly to fulfill the DOJ agreement.

SWAT raids drug ‘flop’ house in Woods Cross

Hiker rescued at Deuell Creek with ankle injury Davis County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue were called out on Sunday to assist a female with an ankle injury. The woman said that the Deuell Creek rope swing had broken as she was swinging. “Our team worked side by side with South Davis Metro fire to safely get our friend off the mountain,” a Search and Rescue Facebook post said. “Many thanks to our many volunteers, fire personnel, deputies, and dispatchers for their amazing efforts.”

WOODS CROSS—Five people were detained Tuesday morning after Woods Cross Police and the South Davis Metro SWAT team raided a home believed to be a flop house for drug users.

“We’d been looking into the residence for months now,” said Woods Cross Police Assistant Chief Adam Osoro. “Neighbors had reported suspicious activity there so we’ve been watching it on a regular basis. We had information that there was drug activity in the home.”

Osoro said they had enough evidence for a search warrant. “We ID’d some of the occupants who had violent records dealing with firearms. That’s what sparked the SWAT response.”

At 4 a.m. on Tuesday the SWAT team went to the house at 1634 S. 500 West to serve the search warrant but no one answered, said Osoro. “They made a forced entry through the front door and called the occupants out who complied after that. We detained five people total. Two were taken to the hospital for preexisting conditions unrelated to the raid.”

Osoro said they seized meth, marijuanas, heroin and Fentanyl in the home. “We’re in the process of screening against those folks. There’s no indication that they were manufacturing drugs. It was more of a flop house for drug users.”

The investigation is ongoing, he said. “We’re trying to find what evidence can be tied to each person.”

SDMF recruits complete rescue and survival training Last week South Davis Metro Fire recruit class 49 completed week six of their training. The crew learned about Mayday operations and firefighter rescue and survival, a SDMF Facebook post said.

They also learned how to rescue themselves or other firefighters if things on the fireground go wrong or if there are equipment failures.

Every time it snows, inevitably the dispatcher center will receive a few calls wondering what the road conditions are like. Same goes for a power outage – curious minds wondering when the power will be restored.

911 should always be used in an emergency. What is an emergency? An emergency is anytime you need to save a life, stop a crime or report a fire.

The non-emergency number is a resource to get in touch with a dispatcher with non-emergency issues.

What are reasons to call non-emergency dispatch?

• Report a crime with no suspect (stolen bike or other property) • Report a crime with a suspect but the suspect is not on scene (fraud, etc.)

• Non-emergency in progress (loud party) • Suspicious circumstances Do not call 911 or non-emergency dispatch for the following: • Power outages • Telephone, cable, or internet issues • Road conditions/ weather • To report a natural disaster During Utah’s winter months, car crashes and slide offs are common. If the crash has occurred on the freeway or at a busy intersection and the crash has affected traffic – call 911. Getting help to you quickly is important as the initial accident could set off a domino effect.

friend of mine told me last week that she had cut off a friendship with a former high school companion. Her friend and the woman’s husband had “turned looney,” she said.

“I could accept the fact that they voted for Donald Trump,” she told me. “But now they are into conspiracy theories and InfoWars nonsense. That’s too creepy. I really don’t want to be around them.”

Certainly she is not alone. In the past 13 years, we’ve heard countless reports of people disassociating themselves from family members or friends due to political beliefs. And that’s why I was intrigued by an op-ed from Daniel Cox, director and founder of the Survey Center on American life.

Published in a recent Deseret News edition, Cox said we live in a nation of strangers. “We are no longer interested in getting to know even the people who live next door. Even when we do talk, we’re increasingly doing it online, a poor way

We are, he said, “profoundly ignorant about the way that many of our fellow citizens think, what they feel, and what they want…Of the many problems we face as a country, the lack of faith we have in each other is one of the most concerning.”

Cox is correct. While Utahns might know their neighbors better than in most other states due to active church boundaries, we have become a nation, not of neighbors, but of tribes. Democrats tend to live in urban areas with other Democrats, while Republicans congregate in rural and suburban neighborhoods. When I grew up in Salt Lake City, my block was a multi-cultural stew; of the 22 homes, we had Catholics, Jews, Baptists, Presbyterians, Republicans, Democrats, working class households and executive-dominated homes. A guy who labored in a bakery lived next door to a man who owned a jewelry store; a Baptist mother invited the LDS children to attend a non-denominational summer craft program in her church.

Interacting with people led to understanding. My father thought one of our neighbors was a crazy drunken Republican, but he still invited him to our backyard barbecues. Turned out, the man wasn’t totally crazy; in fact, when he left the bourbon alone his values weren’t much different than ours. He just mistrusted the Kennedys and Roman Catholics in general.

There are, of course, limits. Like my friend, I would not tolerate an association with an InfoWars supporters who believed the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., was a fabrication or that Hillary Clinton is behind a ring of child torturers. Likewise, when I see a driver with a car bumper sticker claiming “My dog is smarter than Joe Biden” or “Bernie Sanders is the last hope to save America,” I doubt we could have a meaningful conversation.

But as Cox suggests, we should not just mingle only with our own kind. The service station I frequent is owned by a man whose politics are distinctly different from mine, yet I acknowledge him as kind, charitable, and a contributing member of society. A neighbor wearing a “Let’s Go Brandon” shirt waved at me today as I left for work. I waved back, figuring there are probably many items we could agree upon despite his offensive shirt messaging.

As Cox wrote, “How can we hope to learn anything about people who are different from us when we only interact with people who are similar to ourselves?”

Handy ousted at Davis County Republican Convention

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—There were some big surprises at the Davis County Republican Party Convention held last Saturday at Farmington High. Probably the most shocking was incumbent Rep. Steve Handy of Layton being knocked out of the race for his District 16 seat.

Other incumbents managed to squeak through to a primary.

“It was an incredible disappointment,” said Handy. “I didn’t see it coming. It was a conservative group targeting us. I decided not to get signatures, I didn’t think I had competition.”

A few years ago, the legislature passed a bill allowing candidates to gather signatures to be guaranteed a spot in the primary in addition to the regular delegate avenue. “Melissa (Ballard) and Ray (Ward) were both smarter than me,” he said. “They got signatures.”

It was in the hands of 60 people using their litmus test that he was not

worthy to continue, Handy said. “The system is badly, badly broken. It does not represent the people. If I’d have gone the dual route of signatures it would have gone to the voting populace who are a more moderate body.”

Handy said he had a feeling there would be a primary. “But this was a huge, huge surprise. It knocked me upside the head. I knew it could always happen and it did.”

He said his opponent, Trevor Lee, made a point of saying it was a waste of time and money to change the state flag. “I think you can balance the budget and rebrand the state at the same time.”

“It’s a sad thing (that Handy is out) because he’s my friend,” said Rep. Ray Ward, R-Bountiful, who gathered signatures and will go into a primary.

“He’s done a good job. He’s worked on some good projects for the state.”

A primary is not a bad thing, said Ward. “The voters are going to get to choose. Don’t be surprised to see a lot of yard signs in the next few months.

Across the county and the state there could be two or three races. It’s going to be a busy election season.”

Ward said he and his wife collected some of the signatures needed but most went through a company that gathers them. “I’m working 12 hour days at the clinic until the session starts. It’s good for challengers. They can do a lot of the work because they don’t have the legislature. For me I don't’ have that time.”

Signature gathering is a good process, he said. “If I’m going to run I’ll do both pathways. The delegates have an important voice. I talked to every single delegate who would talk to me. I knew a little bit about how my own delegates might vote but they can still treat you politely then vote against you.”

The Davis County Republican Party was able to “hold one of the most organized and efficient conventions in

our history,” said Party Chair Daniela Harding. “We are grateful to our leadership team, executive committee and many volunteers that helped make this convention possible. We are thrilled that we were able to meet in person again and credentialed 92 percent of our delegates.”

“All together the delegates were ultra right wing,” said Handy. “They’re all about control and power. I don’t think that brings about good government. It’s strange and scary stuff to me.”

Handy said he’s still trying to process the loss. “Steven Handy got ousted. I feel very badly about it. It’s a system where voters didn’t get a say.”

All good things must come to an end, he said. “I’ve got to smile and move forward. I feel good about my service. I’ll be in office until the end of the year and I’ll do my best to do what the people hired me to do.”l

Legislature overrides Governor’s veto of HB11

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com SALT LAKE CITY—It took less than 30 minutes for the Utah House and Senate to override the Governor’s veto of HB11 during a special session last Friday. The controversial bill prohibits transgender individuals from competing in women’s sports and was passed on the last day of the 2022 legislative session.

Gov. Spencer Cox had said he would veto the bill when it came across his desk.

The votes were decisive with 21-8 in the Senate and 56-18 in the House. Some lawmakers spoke out against the bill before casting their vote.

“Utahns are looking toward their leaders to look out for them,” said Sen. Kathleen Riebe, D-District 8. “We’re not doing that. This makes me sad and sick to my stomach. We need to dig deep and listen and not be rushed. This is what we’re here for. I’m voting ‘no’ because our work should be for the people.”

This version of the bill didn’t have public comment, said Sen. Daniel Thatcher, R-District 12. “We didn’t hear from therapists, doctors or teammates.

This is unconstitutional to discriminate against this. It’s not about whether we like it or don’t like it. I absolutely love those people. This hurts them. We shouldn’t debate about what their life should be.”

The legislature also met to adjust HB3001, the indemnification of local education agencies (LEAs). This amendment clarifies that the state will hold responsibility in the case of potential litigation and sets aside $500,000 for possible legal suits. It passed both the House and Senate.

Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, voted against the override but voted for HB3001. “I voted ‘I’ because I don’t see any reason to vote against it. If we’re going to do it (override HB11) we need to protect our school districts.”

Utah now joins 11 other states who have passed similar legislation. “All 11 states have had lawsuits filed against them,” said Senate President J. Stuart

We’ll see what form any lawsuits take and respond accordingly.”

There have been rumors that the NBA might pull out of the 2023 All-Star Game in Utah if the bill passed. “The NBA hasn’t talked to me,” said Adams.

“We’ll see if they pull out of those other states.”

“I’m a season Jazz ticket holder,” said House Speaker Brad Wilson. “If the NBA has a better idea let’s talk about it. We have to protect women’s sports.

We’re committed to finding a solution that benefits all sports. If they have thoughts on how to do this I'd like to hear from them.”

HB11 also creates an unbiased, evidence-based seven-member commission if a court stays the ban on transgender participation. The School Activity Eligibility Commission will decide on a case-by-case basis transgender participation in K-12 sports to ensure athletes can play safely and fairly.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there to the public, said Rep. Kera Birkland, R-District 53 (Morgan) House sponsor of HB11. “What we’re trying to do here is protect the sport. It’s important to send the message to transgender kids that they are loved, and cared about. This is not about not loving them or that we don’t have compassion. We want to be mindful and support these kids but we don’t want to deny the rights of another girl. All we’re asking is that women category sports be kept for women.”

“We’re very concerned about all our kids,” said Adams. “Let’s put the divisiveness behind us and move forward.

We’re doing our very best to put the best policy out as we possibly can.” l

tah is transitioning into what’s called a Steady State response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with several testing centers closing and others modifying their operational procedures.

The Utah Department of Health (UDOH) says this is a more long-term, sustainable response, with some testing venues transitioning to private, for-profit vendors.

Among those testing sites now closed is one at Davis Technical College in Kaysville, which ceased operations on March 31. A TestUtah site will remain open at Bountiful Veterans Park, 740 S. 100 E., Bountiful (drive-through in the parking lot), Monday through Thursday – 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. You must register in advance at the TestUtah website https:// www.testutah.com/en.

“Testing is still an important tool for many Utahns who may benefit from treatments,” said Charla Haley, the public information officer for UDOH. “Those who should continue to get tested include people with underlying conditions, those going to visit someone who is vulnerable due to age or immunocompromised, people who have been ill but feeling better and want to confirm

they are negative, and those who work with vulnerable populations (healthcare workers, long-term care facility employees or those working in congregate settings including prisons and homeless shelters.)”

The Bountiful UDOH mobile test site also offers tests for children ages three and older on Fridays from 8 to 8 p.m., and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Again, pre-registration is required.

The state has also closed Mako Medical Sites in Grand, Sanpete and San Juan Counties.

Bountiful City Youth Council attends leadership conference

B

ountiful City Youth Council had the opportunity to attend a Youth Council Leadership Conference at Utah State in March. This three-day conference, put on by the Association of Youth Councils, averages over 200 youth council participants from across the state and teaches a variety of skills from teamwork and leadership to civics in civility.

“We were able to interact with other Youth Councils and build off of their strengths and learn from their weaknesses,”said Brooke Bleazard, BCYC Mayor.

BCYC can be found helping everywhere within Bountiful City and will be hosting the annual Bunny Hop April 16 from 9-11 a.m. at the Bountiful City Park.

Business to Business Expo set for April 14

LAYTON—The Davis Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its Business to Business Expo on April 14 at the Davis Conference Center.

The Expo features keynote speaker Rob Ferre, entertainer, game show host and Master of Ceremonies from Salt Lake City. Ferre founded his company Life of the Party Entertainment in 2007 and worked for Disney, Universal and Nickelodeon. Ferre will speak at 1 p.m. followed by the opening of the Expo from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

WSU dental hygienist students teach oral care at Red Barn Academy

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—Residents at the Red Barn Academy in Farmington got some lessons on good oral care last week from students in the Weber State University dental hygienist program, as part of Pantry Smiles.

“We rotate at Davis Tech to clean teeth,” said dental hygienist student Stephen Kipp. “We also help train the dental assistants.”

As part of their senior project, students give several hours of community service and visiting Red Barn was part of that. “During COVID we didn’t do stuff,” said Josie Walker, another student in the dental hygienist program. “This was a big opportunity since coming back. I think it’s awesome. I feel lucky to help people.”

Not a lot of people have the opportunity to learn about oral care, she said. “We clean teeth but our job is also to educate, not only in private practice but also community care in low income areas that need education about oral care.”

Pantry Smiles is a donated dental program that is a partnership between the Bountiful Community Food Pantry, Davis Technical College (DTC), Weber State University and Davis County dentists. Students at DTC and WSU work with dentists and patients as part of their school program.

LHS teacher uses his own struggles to help kids through tough times

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com LAYTON—Dustin Hawkins quit his job as a hospital administrator at Huntsman more than 10 years ago and started a recovery gym in 2010, a nonprofit in inner city Ogden. The recovering drug addict is

now sharing what he’s learned with kids he teaches at Layton High.

“I was an opiate substance abuser,” said Hawkins. “I knew I had to get sober.

I had a couple of kids and my wife was going to leave. I joined the Mormon church and found God. I got sober and quit my job at Huntsman. I dumped my 401k to start

In 2019 Hawkins started donating his time at Layton High helping players in the weight room. “They told me there was a position open as a P.E. and health teacher,” he said. “At first I wasn’t interested but spiritually I thought it was the right thing to do. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done – having a job working with kids.”

Hawkins went to school in Wichita and was in student athletics. He also played pro baseball for the Astros.

“I started partying and got bit by pills,” he said. “It came close to ruining my life. The church saved me. I couldn’t get sober until I found God and Christ. It made it easier. I had something else to believe in.”

Hawkins has used his spiritual journey to write four books, combining addiction recovery with his beliefs. He’s also started an after school program for kids who are struggling with anxiety and depression.

“This gives them a safe place to come after school,” said Hawkins. “These are tough kids. They’re using weed, acid and mushrooms. They’re not doing well in school and they’re disrespecting their parents. I teach them to lift weights and get into that to find a good outlet through fitness and give them coping skills. It’s a really good program.”

He’s used his knowledge to start a program at Layton High too. “The first

year I was here I applied for a $30,000 grant to create a gym extension called a health lab,” Hawkins said. “They gave me the money. It’s similar to my gym in Ogden but in a public school. The curriculum is up to standard and its SEL (Social Emotional Learning) approved for health class.

I’m thankful for Layton High and Davis School District—they gave me everything I wanted.”

SEL – that’s what kids are struggling with, he said. “A lot don’t talk and keep it trapped inside their head. By using movement outside we can have good conversations and lift their thoughts and improve their moods.”

Other high schools have expressed interest in his program. “I’ve created a Canvas course and video training so we can get into other schools and help a bunch more kids.”

Hawkins said everyone thought he was crazy when he quit his job at Huntsman. “It was hard to leave my job. I have a master’s in business administration and I was making a lot of money. Financially it was hard. I lost my house and my credit went bad.”

Looking back it was impulsive, he said. “I had a comfortable life but I don’t think I would have stayed sober and I wouldn’t have gotten into the church. I never regret doing it. It led me to my calling in life.” l

Runners participate in Bataan March Memorial

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com CLEARFIELD—In April 1942, during World War II, more than 70,000 U.S. and Filipino prisoners were forced to march nearly 63 miles to a prison camp.

Many in the group were malnourished and in poor health. The march lasted 10 days and many did not survive.

In remembrance of that event, volunteers from the Major Brent Taylor Foundation held a Bataan Death March Ruck Run on March 25. It coincided with a nationwide virtual event marking the 80th anniversary of the march.

At 5 a.m. that morning, more than a dozen runners, many of them still active military, donned weighted vests or packs, each at least 35 pounds, and began a 26.2 mile Ruck Run starting and ending at Steed Park in Clearfield. The first finisher crossed the line a little more than six hours later.

The balance of runners were in by 1 p.m.

That first finisher was Dylan Palmer, an Army recruiter from Idaho Falls who drove down just for this event. He was

cheered on by his sister who lives in West Bountiful.

“I read on the website the story about the Bataan March, which is one reason I wanted to participate, as well as the physical challenge,” he said. Palmer ran about the first 18 miles of the marathon-length course, “but then I marched or walked the final 8-plus. My pack weighed 44 pounds.

I’m not a marathoner, and this is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this over 15 miles. Probably the last time,” he added with a smile.

The Major Brent Taylor Foundation was created after Taylor was killed in action during his fourth deployment in Afghanistan in 2018. He was in his second term as mayor of North Ogden at the time, and he became the first sitting U.S. politician to be killed in action since the Civil War. His widow Jennie Taylor created the Foundation that helps honor and support those who serve our nation.

“The Foundation has three pillars – train, honor and engage,” said Jed Malmberg, who volunteers along with his wife for the Foundation. “We are certain-

ly busy most of the time. We show up at funerals and other events for fallen service members by invitation. We help welcome military personnel when they come home, and participate in parades and community events, again only by invitation. Jennie is actually in St. George this weekend for the unveiling of that community’s Gold Star Monument.”

He said Jennie Taylor talks about the importance of training “our future leaders.

We try to get involved with the schools any chance we get to help with young people.

And we salute and honor all kinds of uniforms – military, police, firefighters. Our goal is to let them know we support them in any way we can.”

Volunteers from the Major Brent Taylor Foundation were on hand to line the route with American Flags and to welcome those participating back across the finish line. Among them were Martin Stott and his son Jacob, both of whom handed flags to the finishers and other well wishers.

“It’s the way we can show these soldiers how much we appreciate the safety and security they provide us,” he said. l

Husband and wife team promote self esteem through theater program at Woods Cross Elementary

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com WOODS CROSS—Eric and Sandy Jensen, both teachers at Woods Cross Elementary, have started an after school theater program to bring out the best in kids. The couple has been working since January on the school’s spring play “Peter and the Pirates” that will be performed in May. “We’ve done this in the past at other elementary schools we’ve worked at,” said Sandy, who teaches first grade. “I wanted to get my husband involved because we don’t always have the opportunity to do that.”

Because of COVID, the kids didn’t get to do vocals or instruments and morale was so low, she said. “They hated to go to music so I could see a need for someone to teach music.”

Eric is a miracle worker with children, said Sandy.

“He’s a big kid at heart. He’s been on radio in movies and on stage. We’re both very passionate about giving back to the community.”

It is important to make kids feel comfortable, she said. “Some can’t step in front of people and have social, emotional issues. We teach them to sing and dance and help them to overcome the anxieties they have with performing.”

Sandy said her goal is to get as many kids involved as possible and encourage the kids to be successful.

“Over 80 kids came out to audition. It’s only fourth, fifth and sixth graders who can participate. A lot of

third graders were anxious to audition so they can look forward to it next year.”

All children are welcome, they don’t need to be performers, she said. “We have kids with autism and a little boy with Down syndrome. He’s off beat a little but he feels great to perform. People feel more valued and safe to be themself. It creates positivity through art.”

Eric teaches the music in his classroom, said Sandy.

“Pretty much the whole school knows the songs.”

For kids with ADD being loud is actually good, she said. “Eric is bouncy and a comedian so he understands the need to shout out, but we teach them when it’s appropriate and when it’s not.”

They hold rehearsals three times a week and Sandy posts videos if kids miss it. “The kids love it,” she said.

“It’s like a football coach looking at film after a game.

They can see where they need to be louder or work on choreography.”

The high school dance team also works with the kids, said Sandy. “They help them focus on the music and beat. It’s been awesome. A mother helps with the costuming, it's not just us. Parents are excited to be a part of it.”

“Peter and the Pirates” is a parody of Peter Pan, she said. “It’s a fairytale with mermaids and pirates instead of Indians. It’s been cut down to 45 minutes for kids.”

Eric does this on his own time, said Sandy. “He writes the script, adds parts, takes them out and tweaks it for the kids we have. There are 73 kids in the cast.”

Eric and Sandy are not new to theater. “We’re the founders of Off Broadway downtown and the Draper

Historic Theatre. I’m an actress and performer as well,” said Sandy. “I’m in shows at CenterPoint.”

Someday these kids will become actors and singers, she said. “I know I did theater and it helped me overcome shyness. We want to build their confidence so they say, ‘I can do this.’”l

Woods Cross High’s ‘Wish Week’ raises funds for new Teen Center

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com WOODS CROSS—The Davis Education Foundation broke ground on a new Teen Center several months ago to be built next to the football field at Woods Cross High School. Last week, students and the community came together for “Wish Week” to raise funds to support the center.

“It was very successful,” said senior SBO VP of service Elena Smart. “Money is still trickling in but right now we have $25,000. It is phenomenal. It’s really amazing.”

The week consisted of activities like penny wars, a silent auction and treats for sale during lunch. “We had a couple of new things,” said Smart. “There was Save it or Shave it where people could donate money to either save their hair or shave it off. That got us a lot of money.”

said. “Kids basically went door to door knocking. We’d give them our little spiel about the teen center and how it helps kids who don’t have a safe place to go and provides them with hygiene items and a place to shower and do laundry.”

They’d give them a QR code to donate or some people gave cash on the spot, Smart said. “We’d offer to do outdoor jobs to earn the money too. It was the biggest fundraiser. We’re super, super grateful to the community. That’s what brought in the most.”

Smart said they don’t have final numbers yet. “There is a generous anonymous donor who will match whatever we earn.”

The whole school was involved, she said. “A large number of students donated and all the SBOs were super helpful in organizing it.”

Davis boys and girls lacrosse teams enjoying winning ways

n boys lacrosse, Davis and Woods Cross won both games this week while Bountiful and Viewmont went 1-0 and Farmington came up short in their two games. Davis and Farmington’s girls lacrosse teams won their games while Bountiful went 1-1, Viewmont 0-2 and Woods Cross 0-1 as the teams gear up for region play.

BOYS Davis

Davis defeated Layton 23-0 March 22.

“We played really solid on all aspects of the game,” said head coach Dillon Yocom. “Layton is still a newer program and I admired how they continued to figure every minute. They have a promising future.”

Rhett Rice, Emmett Rice and Nick Johnson recorded four goals each with eight other players scoring in the shutout.

Against Pleasant Grove March 23, the Darts won 21-3.

“We played our best game of the year so far,” Yocom said. “We played really fast and played our game. Defense did a great job pressuring and forcing turnovers.”

Yocom particularly noted the play of Blake Lucas on defense and Eli Greenway offensively in the big win. “Blake was a brick wall tonight and made multiple saves,” Yocom said. “Our offense played great team lacrosse, playing fast – the way we aim to play. Eli was huge at faceoffs tonight, giving us lots of possessions. PG is a talented team and kept playing hard all night.”

Rhett Rice and Mason Gagner both netted four goals with eight others again scoring in the win.

Davis is now 4-1 on the young season.

Farmington

Farmington lost to Roy 9-6 March 22 and then 12-7 against Bountiful March 24. The Phoenix squad is now 1-3 this season.

Bountiful

In Bountiful’s 12-7 win over Farmington March 24, Hayden Hanson scored seven goals while Nathan Horne added two goals.

The win improved the Redhawks’ record to 2-1 early in the year.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross beat Highland 15-10 March 23 behind six goals from Will Marx and four each from Walter Hoge and Zach Orme.

Against Utah Military Academy – Hill Field March 25, the Wildcats won 15-3. Marx and Connor Williams both scored three goals with six other players also contributing offensively for Woods Cross.

The Wildcats are now 3-1 this season.

“We had to sit a few key players in the first half due to team policy, so it was good to see how our team managed without them,” said head coach Makenzie Hekking. “We were sloppy at first, but then the girls really started to gain confidence and took control of the game towards the end of the first half. We started to face guard Layton’s number one player Rylee Webster and once we did that we pretty much shut down their offense.”

Kaydence Johnson scored five goals to lead the Darts while Emma Williams had four and Olivia Lifferth three.

Davis is undefeated through three games this season.

Farmington

Farmington defeated Roy 18-4 March 22, scoring nine goals in each half to defeat the Royals.

Against Ridgeline March 25, Bountiful won 9-8 to improve to 2-1 so far this season.

Against Green Canyon, Viewmont lost 13-12 despite Lauren Harris netting nine goals and Janessa Grover adding three.

Softball teams gear up for region seasons

iewmont won all three of its games last week, outscoring opponents 451, while Farmington split its games and Davis and Bountiful went 1-2. Woods Cross was winless in both games against Morgan and Sky View.

Viewmont

The Vikings blanked Mountain Crest 10-0 on March 22 in six innings.

“We had timely hitting, spot-on pitching and an all-around great team effort,” said head coach Stacie Toney.

Molly Roberts led the Vikings with four RBIs while Kennedy Embrey and Anna Moore drove in two runs each and Karli Dickerson one. Grace Nielson won the game on the mound for Viewmont.

Against Park City, the Vikings won 18-1, scoring 16 runs in the final two innings of the big win. Roberts had a monster game with seven RBIs with Embrey adding five and Oakley Sovic two.

Viewmont also shut out Skyline 17-0 March 25, finishing off an incredible week of offensive display.

“Grace and Molly pitched an excellent game,” Toney said. “We passed the bats today. It was a good win to propel us into the start of region next week.”

Moore led the way with five RBIs while Embrey had three, Sydnit Steed two, Lily Hawker two, Roberts, one, Dickerson one and Jenavieve Eggett one.

The Vikings’ record now stands at 8-2 this season.

Davis

Davis lost to Fremont 14-7 March 22. The game was close through three innings before the Darts gave up seven runs over the final three innings.

“We had so many great moments, both on defense and hitting the ball,” said head coach Todd Street. “We just could not shut them down. We lost after being up 2 to 0 and 6 to 3.”

Sadie Hathaway and Larkyn Robinson both drove in two runs to lead Davis offensively.

Against Weber March 24, the Darts lost 7-3 with Aubrey Noriega recording two RBIs in the loss.

“We had a tough time getting our bats going,” Street said.

Davis bounced back with a 6-2 win over Roy March 25. The Darts scored in

every inning but the fourth with Robinson, Alix Thaxton, Abby Olsen, Avery Kartchner and Sadie Hathaway each driving in a run.

“The girls played great defense and we were led by Ellie Black and Nina Attanasio with great pitching,” Street said.

Davis is now 6-5 this season and 1-3 in Region 1 play.

Farmington Farmington defeated Layton 13-2 March 22, scoring in nearly every inning in the rout of the Lancers.

Delaney Baker was the winning pitcher while the offense was led by Paige Herbon with three RBIs, Courtney Christiansen (two RBIs), Hadley Eichmeier (two) and Madison Kelker (one).

Against Fremont March 24, Farmington lost 8-3. The Phoenix were down 6-0 before getting on the board in the fifth inning, but it wasn’t enough in the loss.

Erbon and Eichmeier brought in a run each to lead Farmington offensively.

The Phoenix squad’s record is currently 3-4 overall and 2-1 in Region 1.

Bountiful

Bountiful defeated Corner Canyon 14-3 March 21.

Ella Miller had a day on the mound with 12 strikeouts while also hitting a home run and driving in four runs at the plate. Head coach Butch Latey also noted Athena Tongaonevai’s 3-for-3 offensive performance – recording one RBI – while also “catching a great game.”

Others contributing offensively were Shiloh Johnson (three RBIs), Malissa Turpin (two), Eva Stoddard (one) and Mylie Burnes (one).

Against Ridgeline March 23, the Redhawks lost 5-4. Bountiful was down 5-2 until the final inning and scored two runs but came up just short.

“We committed five errors,” Latey said. “Eva pitched a great game and also had two 2-run home runs to drive in all four runs.”

Bountiful also lost to Weber 8-1 March 25 with Frankie Galeana bringing in the Redhawks’ only run in the second inning.

“We had too many walks, too many non-hitters and a combination of defensive and offensive breakdowns in the loss,” said Latey. “The bright spots were our designated hitter Frankie Galeana who went 3-for-3, and our catcher Athena, who was 2-for-3 at the plate to raise

Woods Cross lost to Morgan 10-0 March 21, managing just three hits as a team.

“It was a tough game for us. We had a hard time finding our bats and when we did we couldn’t string them together,” said head coach Casey Plowman.

“We also struggled defensively with five

errors. We will get after it this week in practice.”

Against Sky View March 24, the Wildcats lost 13-5. Woods Cross got out to a 4-1 lead until the bottom of the fourth and then they surrendered 12 runs through the next three innings.

Natalie Wall, Noa Latu, Ali Ebberts and Libby Clark each drove in a run in the loss.

The Wildcats are now 5-4 so far this season. l

few weeks of non-league action is in the books. Now it’s time for local boys soccer teams in Region 5 to get to the meat of their schedule.

The region battles began on Tuesday, with teams starting the first of what will be 10 games. Each team plays one another twice and will battle for postseason seeding.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats had a busy non-region schedule and picked up the most overall wins in Region 5. At 4-3, the Wildcats started league games on Tuesday at home against Bonneville.

Last week, Woods Cross went 1-1, with both games having identical scores. The Wildcats first triumphed over Mountain Ridge 2-0 on March 22.

Three days later, they fell by the same score, this time at Corner Canyon.

Against Mountain Ridge, Woods Cross scored a goal in each half. Nathan Blanchard and Noah Beard scored for the Wildcats, with Michael Williams getting the shutout in the net.

It was the second consecutive shutout for the Wildcats.

After opening with Bonneville (after our press deadline), Wood Cross plays at Bountiful on Friday.

Bountiful

Speaking of the Redhawks, it has been a rough early going for the squad.

They enter region play at 0-5, having lost four of those games by one goal

apiece and the other by two goals.

Last week, Bountiful scored twice at East but gave up three goals in the single-point defeat. Bountiful had a goal in each half, with Javier Moreno and Jamarcus Calder finding the back of the net. But Bountiful saw a tie game slip away with two East goals in the final 40 minutes. On March 25, the Redhawks came up short at home against Herriman, 3-1. Calder scored a first-half goal for the team.

On Tuesday, the Redhawks were hoping for their first win of the season when they played at Viewmont.

Viewmont

Viewmont began region play also seeking win No. 1 on the year. The 0-3 Vikings were outscored 8-5 in nonleague games and opened the region portion of the season at home against Bountiful. Next up is a road date at Northridge.

A week ago, the Vikings had two narrow losses. First, they suffered defeat at the hands of Wasatch, 2-1 on March 22. Cole Halterman scored a second-half goal, but the team couldn’t rally to tie things up. On March 25, Spanish Fork outlasted Viewmont in a high-scoring 4-3 affair. Boston Meacham, Halterman and Kenyon Grange scored for Viewmont. Cooper Page had an assist. Spanish Fork scored three goals in the second half as the two teams combined for five goals in the final 40 minutes.

Davis

Up in Region 1 of Class 6A, Davis has already played three region games

– and won them all. The 4-0 Darts looked to keep their winning streak going with a game at Syracuse on Wednesday, after our press deadline.

The Darts played just once a week ago – a 2-1 win over Layton. Both Darts’ goals came in the first half, as Talon Meyer and Nash Jensen scored.

In its four games this year, Davis has surrendered just three goals.

On April 1, Davis plays at Clearfield.

Farmington

The Phoenix are 2-1 in Region 1 and have already played seven total games, amassing a 6-1 record.

Farmington defeated Riverton in

a shootout in a non-region clash on March 21. The game was tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation, with Jaden Petersen and Jake Call scoring. In the shootout, it was 5-4 in favor of the Phoenix.

Two days later, Farmington won a key region game, edging past Fremont 2-1 on the road in a tight overtime contest. Boston Peterson scored for Farmington, as did Chandler Gunn.

Clemente Langer had an assist.

The Phoenix hosted Clearfield on Wednesday and play at home against defending 6A champion Weber on Friday. l

Region 1 baseball in full swing; Region 5 getting underway

on-region play is in the books for local high school baseball teams. Now the second part of the season begins: the region battles. Region 1 schools Davis and Farmington are already a week into region games. Region 5’s Woods Cross, Bountiful and Viewmont get started next week.

Davis

The Darts had three league games last week, all against Layton. The Darts lost game one 5-0 on March 23 but then picked up wins on March 24 and 25 by the scores of 6-5 and 4-0, respectively. After the busy week, Davis was 2-1 in region play and 4-5 overall.

In the first win over Layton, Davis used a fourrun fourth inning to go up 5-0. Layton rallied to tie the score at 5-5 in the seventh inning. When Davis got up to bat in the bottom of the seventh, it scored the game-winning run. Easton Baggett had a double, a triple and two RBIs. Trey Talbot had a double. Cory Bridges was credited with the win on the mound.

In the second win, Davis allowed just five hits in the shutout victory, as Andrew Fillomohala excelled on the mound. Meanwhile, Baggett had two RBIs, and Talbot hit another double. Davis then came up short on Tuesday at home against Syracuse, losing 10-5 to fall to 2-2 in region games. In a losing cause, Max Hunter and Walker Jensen each had doubles and an RBI. The Darts get rematches with Syracuse on Wednesday and Friday.

Farmington

The Phoenix had a rough start to Region 1 play, losing a trio of games against Fremont last week. The first two games were close (5-3 on March 22 and 8-7 on March 23). But game three was all Fremont, with

Farmington succumbing to an 18-7 defeat. The loss left Farmington with an overall record of 3-5.

The first loss saw Tucker Wall hit a double for Farmington. Kaden Willis, Park Romney and Mason Cook each had RBIs. In the second loss, the Phoenix and Silverwolves were tied going into the bottom of the seventh. But Fremont scored the game-winning run at its last at-bat. Romney had a double and an RBI for Farmington.

In the final contest of the three-game series, Farmington racked up a dozen hits but allowed 18.

Fremont scored 10 of its 18 runs in the final two innings. Jack Hansen was stellar in defeat with three RBIs. Cook had an RBI and a double.

This week, Farmington got its first win in Region 1 with a 13-8 triumph over Weber on Tuesday.

Farmington had a huge day at the plate, piling up 17 hits. Weber had 11 hits but made seven errors. The Phoenix also finished strong, amassing four runs in the sixth inning and five more in the seventh. Jack Hansen got the win, but it was Luke Workman who had the huge day. The senior had two home runs and five RBIs. Kaden Willis had a triple and an RBI, while Wall and Landon Tanner each had doubles.

Farmington and Weber were to meet again on Wednesday and Friday.

Region 5

The first games in six-team Region 5 start on Tuesday, April 12. At our press time, Bountiful had the best overall record in the region at 5-1. Viewmont and Woods Cross were each 2-1.

The Redhawks were 2-1 last week, defeating Roy 11-7 on March 22 and Brighton by the score of 9-7 on March 26. Bountiful fell to Park City 4-3 on March 24.

Viewmont got off to a late start this season, not getting underway until last Tuesday, March 24 when it lost to Olympus 8-1. The Vikings rebounded with a 13-7 win over West on March 25 and an 11-6 victory over the same Panthers team on March 26. Cal Miller

had five RBIs in the second win over West, and five other Vikings hit doubles. Max Lee hit a triple and had an RBI. Woods Cross played just once last week, a 10-4 win over Bear River. The Wildcats lit up the stat sheet with 17 hits in the win. Micah Mortensen had two RBIs and two doubles. The Wildcats also lost to Cottonwood on Tuesday, 9-5. They host Clearfield on Friday. l

Boys tennis well underway with new season

Seniors Brayden Groll and Spencer Groll return from a top 10 team at the 6A state tournament a year ago for Davis and head coach Lexi Frey expects the twins to lead the Darts on and off the court.

Senior Andrew Francis, junior Brox Turley and sophomore Rhett Halverson were also noted as new players who can help Davis’ program this season. “They will be a great addition now and in the years to come,” Frey said.

The team has been working on technical aspects of the sport along with team chemistry as they enter the season. “We are hoping to really improve this year,” Frey said. “We hope to have a really good season where the team sets goals and comes together.”

Also on the DHS squad this season are seniors Ryan Harris and Kaden Wright; juniors Cole Durham, Kyler Ito and Sam Whitaker; and sophomores Adrik Bowen, Jeffrey Cook, Mitch Cox, Lucas Edgington, Scott Finlinson, Will Parkinson, Corbin Wilko and Jacob Williams.

Frey is being assisted by Breezy Chisholm and team managers Megan Mody and Elisa Maroccolo on the coaching staff this season.

So far this season, Davis defeated West 3-2 on March 15. “Our clinching match was from Andrew Francis, and it was one of the best matches I have seen him play,” Frey said.

Also against Northridge March 17, the Darts won 4-1 with Frey noted the “outstanding” play of the doubles teams who didn’t drop a game in each of their matches. The Darts have also lost to Viewmont 4-1 and Bountiful 3-2 while beating Bonneville 5-0.

Farmington

Senior Josh Jones, at No. 1 singles, along with senior Marcin Rucinski (No. 3 singles) and sophomore Spencer Ostermiller (No. 1 doubles) will lead Farmington into its first season in 6A. “We’re excited for the change to 6A,” said second-year coach Maren Sanders. “We hope for good tennis and even better weather.”

Sanders will also look to freshman Justin Steed to play No. 2 singles in the varsity lineup with freshman Nate Bullard to team with Ostermiller at No. 1 doubles and junior Bronson Bowcut to play No. 2 doubles.

Against Olympus March 15, the Phoenix won 4-1 with wins in all the singles matches and No. 1 doubles with the only loss at No. 2 doubles.

Sanders particularly noted Rucinski’s performance at No. 3 singles as her player of the match. “He was down 1-3 in the second set after winning the first set and he was able to defend strong and win the match without going into a third set,” she said.

Farmington also defeated Bountiful 4-1 March 24 and are also scheduled to compete against Brighton as well as region matches with Syracuse, Layton, Clear-

field, Davis, Fremont and Weber. “Those matches, along with competing at the Ashton Invitational a few weeks before state will help us prepare mentally and physically for state,” Sanders said. “Hopefully, we can come out strong and let it be known that we are ready to battle.”

Also on the 2022 FHS squad are seniors Tommy MacKay and Noah Wardle; sophomores Colton Miller, Ethan Moore and Jacob Stone; and freshmen Spencer Barlow, Evan DeMourdant, Blake Geddes, Charlie Jenks, Noah Larsen and Cooper Rich.

Bountiful

Bountiful returns a young team from a squad that graduated eight seniors in 2021, including four varsity players. Sophomore Harrison Pearce, who played No. 1 singles as a freshman last season, is back and will again lead the Redhawks. Junior Zach Eyring, who played doubles with his brother last year, slides into the No. 2 singles spot while senior Will Tooley will round out the third spot in the lineup.

“Harrison is a tennis junkie who competes all over the country and has really improved and grown stronger in his game,” said second-year head coach Nic Cronin.

“He’s really helping Zach and coaching him up. Will is a coach’s dream and will do whatever we ask.”

Senior Christian Ure will team up with his brother – Covey, a sophomore who won the JV Region 5 title last year at No. 1 singles – at No. 1 doubles for the Redhawks.

Cronin said he has nine new players, including six

freshmen. “Several of our freshmen are already pushing to play varsity,” he said. “It will definitely be a growing season for us.”

So far this season, Bountiful took second place in Group B at a St. George Tournament March 11-12.

They also competed against Highland March 17, losing 4-7 on a day when five of the matches went to three sets.

“It could have gone either way,” Cronin said, noting Eyring’s performance in particular. “Zach picked up a big win in a three-setter and really turned a corner.”

The Redhawks also beat Davis 3-2 March 22. Cronin highlighted Tooley’s play on the day. “He played his first-ever varsity singles match and won 6-4, 7-5,” Cronin said. “He played fantastic.”

Against Farmington March 24, Bountiful lost 4-1 with the No. 2 doubles team of Thane Thompson / Lincoln Spangenberg picking up the Redhawks’ lone win – and their first varsity win at that spot in the lineup this season.

Also on the BHS squad are seniors Evan Naisbitt and Lincoln Spangenberg; juniors Jason Ebert, Eli Hogan, Isaac Jarman, Brady Madsen, Sam Palfreyman and Thane Thompson; and freshmen Simon Barlow, Pierce Moore, Taz Moss, Boyd Robinson, Joe Stobbe, Brad Vance and Grant Ure. Cronin will again be assisted by Matt Nelson on the coaching staff this season.

“It was a tough day, but we pulled it off,” Salvo said.

Cheyenne Hansen shot a 71 to take medalist honors at Schneiter’s Bluff March 22 in leading Davis to first place as a team with an overall score of 312. The senior was the only golfer in the Region 1 tournament that scored in the 70s.

Other top-five finishers for Davis – who won the tournament by eight strokes over second-place Fremont – were Hannah Karras (tied for second, 80), Bridgette Volk (fourth, 81), Quinn Shupe and Liv Davenport (tied for fifth, 82).

Also competing for the Darts were Abby Lewis (84), Grace Arrington (93) and Lizzie Rhodes (99).

“Cheyenne is playing awesome and we had five other girls in the 80s,” said head coach Lori Salvo.

“Our whole team rocked it!”

At Davis Park March 24, Hansen again placed first individually with a round of 75 to lead Davis to another win as a team with a score of 338. Weber was second with a 350.

At Schneiter’s Bluff, Farmington shot a 369 to place fourth as a team.

“It was a really tough day for us with our top players having a rough day,” said head coach Stephanie Belnap. “It was cold and windy, but all in all everyone was just a little off their game.”

A strong note for the Phoenix squad, according to Belnap, was Gretchen Davis recording a round of 93, a personal-best.

Other scores for Farmington were Sydney Richards (90), Maura Hawkes (92), Paige Olsen (94), Maddie Baugh (96), Eden Page (101), Claire Norton (108) and Brooke Belnap (109).

“We look forward to playing better and building some confidence back as we keep going,” coach Belnap said.

At Davis Park, Farmington again placed fourth behind a fifth-place showing from Richards, with a round of 84, and Hawkes coming in sixth with an 85.

Viewmont began the season in a St. George tournament March 11-12 where Tullis reached the championship match in No. 1 singles in Group A before losing to an American Fork player. Also faring well at the tournament were Kyle Robinson at No. 2 singles, Curtis Robinson at No. 3 singles and Fox/Jones at No. 2 doubles.

won 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). “Adam and Evan came from behind after losing the first set and then were down 2-5 in the third set before forcing a tiebreak and winning,” Burningham said. “After some matches, we’ve now been able to get a good look at the kids and know what we have.

Viewmont defeated Davis 4-1 March 21 with three matches going to three sets – including No. 2 singles which was won by Durrant 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2). They also lost to Brighton 5-0, winning just nine games throughout the five varsity matches.

“Brighton is a very strong team and has a long history of success,” Burningham said.

Also on the VHS squad are senior Reed Webster; juniors Dragon Coopaibool, Beckham Daly and Adam Horsley; and sophomores Chase Burton, Jack Evans, Landon Kearns, Josh Longmore, Ashton Murray and Kai Zierenberg.

Burningham is being assisted by Matt Tullis on the coaching staff this season.

Woods Cross

Other scores for the Phoenix were Aubi Eaves (96), Maddie Baugh (109), Norton (109), Brooke Belnap (111), Elle Baugh (113) and Sophie Connors (116).

Bountiful

Bountiful placed third at Sun Hills, scoring a 383 as a team, with Kylie Ohlson leading the way with a round of 93, tying her for third individually.

Also finishing in the top 10 were Brea Patterson (sixth, 94) and Holland Staker (ninth, 97) with Ella Snyder (99), Jane Lewis (108) and Amelia Mower (112) also competing for the Redhawks.

Viewmont At Sun Hills, Adri Summerhays won medalist honors in leading Viewmont to second place as a team.

Woods Cross

With just two golfers competing in varsity at Sun Hills, Kennedee Pearson led the way for Woods Cross with a round of 106. Sofia Mokofisi shot a 118. l

Woods Cross returned six seniors and an experienced singles lineup – of senior Jack Hinkle (No. 1 singles), junior Caleb Richards (No. 2 singles) and senior Brayden Allen (No. 3 singles).

Other expected contributors on the varsity squad are seniors James Thompson, Tyler Duke and Max Johnson along with freshmen Ian Rummins, Marker Peterson and Jake Richards, who are “coming on as real assets to the team,” according to head coach Jim Romera.

After a first-place finish at the St. George Invitational in the Group B division March 11-12, the Wildcats lost to Lone Peak. “Playing against a 6A powerhouse like Lone Peak, we anticipated it was going to be a challenging match,” Romera said.

Romera noted a highlight of the match was Hinkle’s 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. “In typical fashion, Jack played very strong. He is one of the better players I’ve seen in a long time, and I anticipate he will be on the top of college team’s recruiting lists,” said

Romera, who also credited the play of Caleb, Brayden and Ian. “Although they didn’t win their matches, they had moments of brilliant play and played tough to the end. I loved seeing their fight and determination.”

Romera continued, “Frankly, I was pleased with all of our varsity and JV players. This was only our second match of the season and it was good to see them all play so mentally tough and put forth such a solid effort. I believe we have an exceptionally deep team this year and look forward to competing successfully in region.”

“We should be pretty solid in our region and be quite competitive,” Romera said.

Also on the Wildcats squad are juniors Luke Akerlow and Mason Garff; sophomores Andrew Harrison, Ryker Iverson, Jack Longson, Aiden McMillan and Daniel Olsen; and freshmen Josh Allen, Matthew Baker.

To Milian’s credit, it’s a role she knows well. Like previous “People’s Court” judges, Milian was a real, off-screen judge prior to playing one on TV. (Though the cases she tries are real, what viewers of “The People’s Court” see is actually an arbitration proceeding rather than a legal trial.)

Since then, she has made a name for herself as “the nice girl” in series such as “Community” and “Mad Men,” but “Roar” may prove to be a diversion from the norm for the Hollywood, California, native.

Educated at the California Institute of the Arts and the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Brie started acting long before her college years. Her first-ever role, that of Toto in her Jewish Community Center production of “The Wizard of Oz,” began her life as a self-proclaimed “drama nerd.” The president of her high school drama club, Brie loved the stage and worked as a clown for birthday parties. Ironically, she had once vowed never to work on television, claiming she loved the stage too much to leave.

Though, having grown up in Hollywood, she grew to love TV work and soon found herself receiving critical acclaim for her role as Annie Edison in “Community.” This role paved the way for many others across film and television, including those in “Scream 4” (2011), “Get Hard” (2015), “Sleeping with Other People” (2015) and, of course, “GLOW.”

OBITUARIES Donna Lee Clayton Benson April 1, 1937 – March 26, 2022

Donna Lee Clayton Benson died at home on March 26, 2022. Donna Lee was born to Don Carlos Clayton Jr. and Evva Gines Clayton on April 1, 1937.

She grew up in Price and Bountiful and graduated from Davis High School in 1955. Donna Lee was the oldest in the family and was the glue that held her family together after her mother died when Donna Lee was only 18. Family meant everything to her, and she quietly sacrificed her time, energy, and means to support them. The gospel of Jesus Christ was her lodestar, and while she was under hospice care she shared copies of the Book of Mormon and her testimony with every nurse and aide who entered her home. They could feel her goodness and it sincerely touched them.

Donna Lee was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple to John William Benson (deceased). They had one child, Evva Courtney (David) Housley, and later divorced. She has two granddaughters

who are the light of her life. To the very end Donna Lee was loving and kind. She could laugh at herself and always looked for ways to uplift others.

OBITUARIES Max H Parkin 1930 - 2022

Max H Parkin, our dear father, 91, passed March 23, 2022, in Salt Lake City of causes incident to age. He was born in Sandy, Utah, July 22, 1930, at his aunt’s house during his mother's visit there. As a Great Depression family, his parents had no funds to pay the doctor, so out of respect they named Baby Max after him. His father, Kimball Mann Parkin, and mother, Florence Hatch, both grandchildren of Bountiful’s first pioneers, were parents of seven sons – Max was the sixth. Raised in Bountiful in an agricultural setting, Max saved enough as a hired farm boy with his older brother George to pay for his own clothes and other personal expenses including those for junior and senior high school. After graduating from Davis High School in 1948, he’d saved enough from his farm jobs for his first year at BYU. Dad had been well schooled in the principles of self-reliance, which he passed on to us kids as well.

Following that year at BYU, at age 18, he flew in a freight airplane to the frontier of Anchorage, Alaska, to work for six months in building construction at an air base to help pay for college and his future LDS Hawaii Mission. His father died while he and younger brother Bruce were serving their missions. After his mission, he entered the University of Utah, joined the Delta Phi fraternity, and enrolled in the Air Force ROTC to study navigation. His five older brothers had served in World War II, and his father, a Navy employee, was at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, during the enemy bombing where he survived a Japanese pilot firing at him whose tracer shell passed through his trouser leg. Because the tragedy of the war had cut deeply into the family, Max’s Gold Star mother wanted Max to earn a military commission to better prepare him for service in the Korean War, then underway. However, after two years of training in ROTC, his military physical at Ft. Douglas diagnosed him with sufficient color blindness to keep him from navigation school and a commission in the Air Force.

Meanwhile in 1954, he married Yvonne Hobberstad of Inglewood, California, in the Salt Lake Temple following her conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at BYU where they met.

the ceremony being performed by Elder Richard L. Evans, whose “Spoken Word” she had often listened to on the radio in her home in Inglewood.

Max and Yvonne have five children: Bradford (Heidi), Kevin, Steven, Christine, and Julie. With the ups and downs of a vigorous family life, Dad was especially proud of us kids: the three boys for their church missions and all of us for graduating from college, especially also our mother, who returned to college at age 35, and with considerable family support after three years of studying, graduated from BYU with a B.A. degree and a teaching certificate.

After graduating from the University of Utah in marketing and economics, Dad was employed by Western Airlines at the old Salt Lake City Airport, which he considered for his life’s career. However, after Dad served for nearly three years at Western, the dean of religious instruction at BYU, Dr. West Belnap, who had baptized our mother, invited Dad to teach in the Church’s educational system. Then after 11 years of teaching seminary in Idaho and Utah and acquiring teaching certificates in both states, he taught at the Salt Lake LDS Institute of Religion at the University of Utah for 27 years. He was fond of teaching his wonderful students as was our mother teaching hers. Dad and Mom used to engage in friendly banter as to who had the happier teaching job – he at the U. of U. Institute of Religion or she at Woodstock Elementary in South Cottonwood where she taught for 27 years. After retiring, dad continued as a volunteer at the Institute of Religion, teaching altogether for 50 years.

Dad loved his scholastic training in

graduate school at BYU where he found such a treasure trove of knowledge, as he said, in religious philosophy and in LDS and Christian history from such legendary scholars as Truman Madsen, Hugh Nibley, Richard Bushman, the gifted Sidney Sperry and especially the deft and insightful Milton Backman, who advised him through his masters and PhD programs. His master’s thesis, “Conflict at Kirtland,” was published by the Church for its seminary and institute libraries. He also published in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism and co-authored Sacred Places, Missouri, a Mormon history and sites book, which President Thomas S. Monson had placed in the cornerstone of the Kansas City Missouri Temple. Besides other writings, he co-edited four volumes of The Joseph Smith Papers, working principally as a team with his esteemed colleague, BYU professor Dr. Alex Baugh. Dad was a long-time member of the Mormon History Association and the Missouri Mormon Frontier Foundation. As a member of the latter in Independence, Missouri, in the Mound Grove Cemetery, he delivered the dedicatory address at the monument ceremony honoring the 13 cholera victims of Zions Camp of 1834 after the bones of three victims had been kicked loose from the bank of a dry stream bed in a farmer’s feed lot near Liberty, Clay County, and verified by historians and scientists at the University of Missouri and taken to Independence – their original destination – for burial.

Except for much hitchhiking to work and to school, he did little traveling because his parents did not own an automobile. However, in his youth, while reading adventure travel books

and collecting old maps, distant places always beckoned him. Eventually, Dad and Mom traveled widely often with us kids, visiting all 50 states, and Dad visited 35 foreign countries. Among his trips were Guatemala and southern Mexico with the eminent BYU Book of Mormon scholar John Sorenson; to Athens and Jerusalem with his young son Kevin; to Beijing and Hong Kong with his son Steven; to Venice, Rome and the Vatican with his daughter Julie and her husband, again to the Holy Land with our mother and to the ports of the six countries bordering Europe’s North Sea with his sons Bradford and Steven when he served as the ship’s ecclesiastical president and lecturer on the Swan, one of the eight tall sailing ships of “Sea Trek,” honoring 19th Century Mormon immigrants to America including his own pioneer ancestors to Bountiful, as well as his earlier ancestors on the Mayflower.

After a Mormon history convention in Copenhagen, he also traveled to Helsinki, St. Petersburg, and Moscow with his friend and fellow historian Dean Jessee.

These adventures helped Dad fulfill his youthful travel dreams.

He served in church assignments as bishop, high councilor, high priest group leader, as one of the stake presidents of the former Seventy, when he served two additional missions. He cherished his Savior Jesus Christ and loved the Church which meant so much to him. He was exemplary to us children and our dear mother, his sweetheart of 68 years, who were his great treasures, as he told us.

He believed that the most important things in life are values and wholesome relationships. He is survived by his wife and their five children, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and younger brother Bruce.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 2, at 12 p.m. at the Chevy Chase chapel, 5235 South 1150 East, Murray, Utah. Viewing will be Friday, April 1 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the same location.

Interment will be in the Bountiful City Cemetery.

If you put an earthworm on a clean, dry sheet of paper and listen very carefully, you will hear a little scratching noise.

This noise is made by the eight small bristles an earthworm has on nearly every segment of its body. These bristles help earthworms move.
