Last week, students at the Davis Catalyst Center used their skills to record and produce a music video with performer Alex Boye and Ukrainian children to show support for the country.

“Today I’m doing a project to record one of my songs and sing it in Ukrainian,” said Boye. “I’ve never spoken it but I want to dedicate this to Ukraine. I’d love to do something.”

Man kills himself after traffic stop

Residential burglary case still under investigation Kaysville Police are asking for the public’s help to identify this suspect in a residential burglary that took place during the night of Feb. 7, 2022. The case is still being actively investigated. The incident happened in the area of Preakness Drive, where the suspect was seen taking multiple items from the homeowner’s garage. He is described as a white male with long hair, possibly a mullet. Please contact Detective Woolf at 801-497-7072 or bwoolf@kaysville.gov with any information and reference case number K22-01048.

KAYSVILLE—A 39-year-old Fruit Heights man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound last week after being stopped by a Davis County Sheriff’s Office deputy for a felony warrant.

On March 9 about 5:30 p.m. the Kaysville Police Department responded to an active incident in the area of 475 S. Main Street in Kaysville.

A sheriff’s deputy was conducting a traffic stop with the man who had an active first degree felony warrant for sexual abuse of a minor. As the deputy approached, he reported seeing that the driver of the vehicle was holding a shotgun to his chest, police said.

The deputy retreated from the vehicle at which time the man shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The incident took place near Davis High but investigators determined it was not connected or directed to any of the schools nearby.

Kaysville police are assisting with the investigation.

Coin dealer sentenced for Ponzi scheme SALT LAKE CITY—A Layton business owner was sentenced to prison last week for allegedly running a multi-state Ponzi scheme.

Gaylen Dean Rust, 62, was sentenced to 19 years in federal prison and ordered to pay more than $153 million to 568 victims.

Rust pleaded guilty in December to charges of securities fraud and other charges.

According to a release from the Utah Department of Commerce, Rust admitted taking money from investors to supposedly buy and sell silver bullion but deposited the money into his personal accounts instead and used it to pay past investors.

Three suspected of burglarizing storage units The Layton Police Department is trying to identify three people who recently burglarized several storage units in north Layton. They were driving a Chrysler 300 when the crimes were committed.

I

n a recent obituary of a Utah woman, she was lauded as a reader of books.

Not just a few books. In her past 11 years, she had read 1,745, including 123 in 2021, and had listed another 1,175 she planned on reading which, according to the obituary, “probably frustrated her to leave such a list unread.”

I cannot compete with her, but I did read 63 books in the past year and, as usual, I am noting my favorites. (I know that 10% of the people read 85% of the books, so this is for that 10% – and anyone else who has a dusty library card or appreciates a visit to the bookstore.)

My favorite genre is mystery/suspense, and some of the best authors are those unnoticed or uncelebrated.

“We Begin at the End” (Chris Whitaker) is a heartwarming, yet suspenseful tale of a sheriff, his friend charged with murder, and his relationship with the children of a drug-addicted woman. The

For a delightful whodunit filled with humor, read “The Thursday Murder Club,” the first of two by British author Richard Osman. The antics of the four amateur sleuths – elderly residents of a retirement home – is pure joy; “Snow” (John Banville) wowed critics who praised him for a modern look at the Agatha Christie mystery tradition; the latest book by Anthony Horowitz (“A Line to Kill”) places him at the top of the mystery game; and any of the mysteries in Amish country by Linda Castillo are worth reading.

Some of the best mystery thrillers, however, are coming from European authors. I recommend “Flowers Over the Inferno” (Ilaria Tuti) whose Italian female detective suffers from dementia; Stuart Neville (“Those We Left Behind”) with a no-nonsense Irish inspector; anything by Hakan Nesser, a Swedish writer who features a snappish and unsentimental detective; Katrine Engberg (“The Tenant” and “The Butterfly House”), a remarkable writer from Denmark; and any of the 14 novels by Naples, Italy author Maurizio de Giovanni.

Among my favorite non-mystery novels of the past year was “The Absolutist,” John Boyne’s novel of a conscientious objector in World War I; “The Plot” (Jean Korelitz), an intriguing puzzle about an English professor who puts his name on a deceased student’s manuscript; and “Oh William,” the sequel to “My Name is Lucy Barton” by Elizabeth Strout. (Note, Strout is masterful with feelings and characters, not heavy plots.)

My recommended non-fiction books this year are “Sleepers” (Lorenzo Carcaterra), originally published in 1995, the author’s retelling of his horrors in a juvenile detention center run by brutal guards; “The Ride of a Lifetime,” the autobiography of Robert Iger, the CEO of Disney Corp.; “Empire of Pain” (Patrick Keefe) detailing the greed of the family corporation connected to the opioid epidemic; and, for fans of the HBO series “The Gilded Age,” the Anderson Cooper history of his famous family (“The Vanderbilts”).

And one more…journalist Gene Weingarten selected one day at random in “1986” and then scoured the country for events – heartbreaking, cheering, warm, odd – that occurred on the very same day. It makes a terrific read.

Misguided CRT frenzy

Dear Editor: Parental anxiety about teaching Critical Race Theory (CRT) in grades K-12 is a growing, although totally erroneous, nationwide phenomenon over something that’s essentially non-existent. My hope is the frenzy isn’t taking hold in the Davis County School District.

The reality is CRT has been generally restricted to an upper-level curriculum where critical thinking is a significant element of achieving a college degree.

Most of the required classes to achieve my Masters in Criminal Justice required assignments dealing with critical analysis involving numerous debatable topics.

What’s even worse, however, is that many cynics are against any K-12 historical reference to past/present racism in America. Protest signs like “Teach Core Subjects Not Racism” indicate an attempt to restrict any level of schooling exposing the shameful part white su-

premacy has played in America’s history.

William F. Halsey commented, “All problems become smaller when you confront them instead of dodging them.”

The obvious reality is ignoring past and present ethnic tragedies is the best way to insure the same in the future.

Our kids need to comprehend those failures when it comes to racism. Claiming such teaching will instill an unfair sense of personal guilt in white students is a specious claim at best. Instead, it’s more likely to imbue in them a desire to help eliminate racial bigotry in the future.

White supremacy, both past and present, needs to be attacked head-on.

High school classrooms provide an appropriate forum to fight the battle.

At The Rec event set for March 18 BOUNTIFUL—South Davis Communities that Care (CTC) in partnership with the South Davis Recreation Center is hosting At The Rec, a Parents Empowered event Friday, March 18.

South Davis CTC are community coalitions focused on preventing substance use and supporting the well-being of youth. Alcohol is one of the substances and CTC is working to decrease its use among teens.

Parents Empowered is a statewide media campaign that teaches parents three ways to help prevent underage drinking in their kids. South Davis CTC was awarded project funding to

partner with an organization where families gather. The Rec Center has willingly partnered with them and will have signs installed throughout the facility that promote the Parents Empowered message.

The newly installed signs will be introduced to the community at the Parents Empowered event. At The Rec will be held at the Rec Center, 550 N. 200 West, Bountiful, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. The first 250 people who participate at the CTC booth will receive free entry and a chance to win an annual pass to the Rec Center.

Second graders learn service through refugee project

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com KAYSVILLE—Second graders at Windridge Elementary School were all smiles as they lined up to assemble school kits for Afghan refugees last week. Each class took a turn stuffing bags with pencils, notebooks, markers and other school supplies to be given to Lifting Hands International.

“It’s part of the UN 17 sustainable goals,” said Principal Casey Pickett.

“Teachers were asked to help the kids do something bigger that’s outside of themselves. Each grade level is doing something different.”

Teachers had to get creative and find something in the kids’ lives to make it real, she said. “Especially with everything that’s going on in the world.

It’s fun.”

“We decided we wanted to give them a quality education so we made school packs for Afghan refugees,” said second grade teacher Julie Denson. “The kids worked hard doing jobs to earn

money for the kits and we also got some donations.”

“We made 100 bags!” said one second grader. “It makes me happy when others have what they need.”

“It makes me feel good inside,” said Ivy. “I think it’s nice to help people,” said Beckett. “I helped people clean cars, learn to write and learn a language to earn money.”

Second grade teacher Lisa Sweeten said they’re working on number four of the sustainable goals which is a quality education. “We talked about how lucky they are that they can get an education and how some kids don’t have that.

Some kids donated their own money and we also got some LAND trust funds. It’s always good to teach kids to give back.”

“It makes me feel good donating to refugees that have been chased out of their country,” said second grader Asher Gadd. “I want them to feel welcome in the United States.”

This is the best school, said Sweeten. “We have the best kids. They love helping. The kids have big hearts.

Milk producers in Davis County, along with others in Utah and in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming, will be receiving surveys from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) as the agency collects information for its 2022 April Milk Production Survey.

Mountain Regional Field Office director Bill Meyer said the dairy industry “is an important component of the Mountain Region’s agricultural economy and it is crucial for all involved to have access to accurate data.”

NASS conducts and produces the surveys four times a year – Jan-

uary, April, July and October. The survey asks producers to provide the number of milk cows in their herd, cows milked and total milk production for the first day of the month. This survey also collects information on hay purchased to feed the dairy herd.

“We have a strong commitment to respondent confidentiality,” Meyer said. “We’re required by law to protect the privacy of all responses and publish data only in aggregate form, ensuring no individual producer or operation can be identified.”

He said results in the quarterly “Milk Production” report will be released on April 20 and will be available online at www.nass. usda.gov/Publications/. The NASS Mountain Regional Field Office can be reached at 800-392-3202.l

Teacher creates business to help teens struggling March Gardening Checklist with mental illness W

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—South Davis Junior High teacher Nicki Preece sees kids every day who are struggling with mental health issues. In an effort to get these kids the help they need, Preece has started a T-shirt business YOU + MOUNTAINS whose mission is to give kids an outdoor experience while providing mental health care access.

“A lot of kids are struggling with these things,” said Preece. “There’s a disconnect to get them the resources they need.”

The T-shirts have upbeat messages that are outdoorsy and encouraging, she said. “My pledge right now is 50 percent of sales will go to this cause.

There’s no profit right now but I want each purchase to mean something. I’ve already made some donations to other organizations.”

Preece said she is starting out small but she hopes her business will grow into that mission and fulfill it.

“So far there’s been a positive response. I’m trying to get the word out as much as possible.”

She has partnered with Big City Mountaineers, who provide inner city youth with outdoor experiences, and MeWater Foundation. “It’s a program in the Bay Area that was started by a social worker,” said Preece. “They take kids whose parents are incarcerated surfing using a trauma-informed approach. These two organizations have been so responsive. They’re kind, good people trying to do good things.”

Unfortunately, it took personal experience to get this started, Preece said. “My eyes were opened three years ago when I was diagnosed with PTSD. I was amazed at the treatment that’s available but it can be expensive. If you don’t have insurance that can be hard. I looked into scholarships for kids who need trauma treatment and I didn’t find anything. I’d like to create a separate foundation just for scholarships.”

During the summer Preece is a hiking guide in Switzerland. “I know the benefits of being outdoors, away from screens and connecting with people,”

she said. “That’s how I came up with the idea to create a T-shirt line that provides outdoor adventure with mental health care access to teens.”

business since September. “I’ve probably sold about 100 T-shirts so far,” said Preece. “I’ve mostly spread the word among family and friends. So far I've had a positive response. I hope it will do some good.” l

e are officially heading into gardening season! Consider these tips from the Utah State University Extension to help you prepare.

• Plant seeds for cool season vegetables (peas, lettuce, radishes) as soon as garden soil is workable.

• Consider planting peas in the garden every 2-3 weeks (until early May).

• Add organic matter to the vegetable garden to help build and amend the soil.

• Avoid compacted soil by not tilling when garden soil is wet or saturated.

• Consider backyard composting or vermiculture (composting with worms).

• If storing bulbs, check their condition to ensure that they are firm, and remove any that are soft or rotten.

• If locally available, plant bare root trees and shrubs, and keep the exposed roots moist until planted.

• Remove protective trunk wrap and burlap from trees in the spring after snow has melted.

• Fertilize spring-flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, fritillaria and crocus.

• Plant cold-hardy pansies and primrose for spots of color.

• Prune berries and fruit trees • Apply horticulture oils at bud break (delayed dormant) in fruit trees to control overwintering insect pests.

• Apply pre-emergent herbicides in late March to mid-April.

• Sharpen mower blades to prepare for the season. Set mower height at 2 1/2 to 3 inches, and mow at this height for the summer.

Pests and Problems: • Control rust mites in apple and pear trees after leaves have emerged and expanded to 1/2 inch.

• Apply dormant oil for pears when leaf buds swell. This smothers eggs of the pear psylla that are laid on buds by overwintering adults.

Bountiful Rotarians hold membership dinner

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—There are about 1,700 Utahns who are members of Rotary, with 40+ clubs organized in the state including five in Davis County. Rotary is one of the world’s largest local and international service organizations with a simple motto – “Service Above Self.”

The Bountiful Rotary Club was the 16th started in the state, organized in 1948. It may well best be known for the annual Coats for Kids Car Show and Crusin’ event held on Father’s Day weekend. Last week, members gathered for a dinner to invite others to join, and talk about the past year.

“I recall the first meeting we had after I was hired at the city,” said Bountiful City Manager Gary Hill. “We talked about the car show and I was excited, because having grown up here I always wanted to see a car show in the city. Until I got more involved, I never realized the power and the impact of the show.”

Hill said he heard teachers in the community talking about the program, which raises money and provides coats, scarves, gloves and other warm apparel for needy children. “To realize the impact was remarkably humbling. It’s meaningful for the city to be a partner with the program.”

At the dinner, longtime Rotarian Paul Summers talked about one of his passions – working with the Navajo Reservation in southeastern Utah. Since March of 2020, Paul, who chairs the Utah Rotary Club’s District 5420 Native American Initiative, along with his wife Helen, has helped to organize and transport thousands of pounds of food and cleaning supplies to Halchita as well as to White Mesa Utes, Hopi and other tribes of the Navajo Nation.

“We worked with Rotarians from 15 other clubs on this initiative, bringing in 250 gallon water tanks, and helping build a community center in the small village of Halchita on the Navajo Reservation,” he said. The group also repaired a dugout on the ball field in the village,

fixed bathrooms in the center and built a library. There were a total of 80 volunteers working on that project.

“The village now has an after school program for about 20 kids, along with some new desks and five computers,” Summers said. “It was a very memorable and important project for us.”

A former teacher at Boulton Elementary said she remembered the day Rotary delivered dictionaries to students.

“I am personally grateful, as all teachers are grateful, to have these teaching aids in our schools,” she said.

“This has been another great tradition of the Rotary and it means everything to us – to have that support in the community.”

Sydney King of the club discussed the Rotary Youth Leadership Award that rewards high school juniors and seniors.

Each year, thousands of young people nationwide are chosen to participate in this highly selective program. Young people ages 13–30 are sponsored by Rotary Clubs to attend the event run by the club’s district committee. She also talked about the scholarships

which Bountiful Rotary gives to high school seniors – 10 each year. And the club also sponsors a foreign exchange program.

John Redd, Governor Elect for the region, told his story of why he joined the Rotary.

“Rotarians are people of service – they do what they say,” he told the audience. “Service is food for your soul.

Rotarians are people of action to get together and make something happen.”

The Coat for Kids event will celebrate its 26th anniversary with a two-day event June 17 and 18. It starts with the Car Parade on Bountiful’s Main Street and food trucks and events at the Bountiful Town Square, 100 East 200 South, on Friday, June 17. The annual Burt Brothers Burnout happens that night on 200 South. Then on Saturday, June 18, the cars and activities move to Bountiful City Park, 200 West 400 North, with food trucks, activities and all those amazing collectable cars on display. All proceeds from the food sales go to benefit those children with warm clothing.

“My friends invited me to do this,” said Masha Bagmet, who is from Ukraine but lives in Riverton now.

“This Ukrainian song can help people remember about us.”

Bagmet brought her three children ages 9, 8 and 5 dressed in traditional costumes to sing and dance. “They are home singers. They probably don’t have an accent because they’ve lived here all of their lives. Both of my parents are in Kiev right now.”

Boye has recorded at the school before. “Alex and I have mutual friends in the industry,” said Audio Production instructor Jason Knoell. “I reached out and told him about this awesome school and asked if he wanted to be a part of it.

He said, ‘heck yeah.’”

He wants to do a lot of production there, said Knoell. “He gets an awesome product that he doesn’t have to pay for and the students get a world class experience working with him. It’s a win, win.”

“I look back at all of the trials and struggles to get here now,” said Boye.

“To get this kind of head start would be incredible. I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to give back and help kids to find their own feet in music and entrepreneurship.”

Boye said when he first heard about the school he thought it must be a college. “I saw it and said ‘this is a high

The ins and outs of social media in business

The same goes for businesses who want to get the word out about what they do and the services they offer. Three experts in the field spoke at the Davis Chamber Women in Business luncheon last week and gave some simple steps to get

started.

“Social media bridges the customer to us and us to the customer,” said Jared Smart with Elite Media. “There are 4.62 billion people worldwide who use social media. Seventy-five percent of the world’s population age 13 plus and 72 percent of Americans. In 2021, social media usage grew at an average rate of 13.5 new users a second.”

Americans spend two hours and 14 minutes every day on social media, he

said. “Sixty-eight percent of consumers agree social media enables them to interact with brands and companies. Social selling is about getting to know your customers and meeting their needs. It’s all about how to connect with them.”

Smart talked about the success of several people whose social media presence boomed once they started listening to their audience and found ways to meet their needs. “You have to replace the word algorithm with audience,” he said.

“You need to help your customers solve a problem and achieve a goal. What services do you provide and how can you help them?”

Camille Tanner with Boondocks gave tips on how to use Instagram. “Use hashtags,” she said. “It makes you discoverable. If there aren’t any hashtags it only goes to your followers.”

Tanner also explained how to switch from a personal account to a professional one. “You can use Instagram to advertise or promote your business,” she said.

“Target what you want customers to pay attention to and use a call to action.”

Use insta stories, videos and pictures to talk about products coming out, Tanner said. “Ask a question. If you work at Lagoon link to that website. You can create content one day and post it on another day.”

Instagram is a great tool to use, she said. “Just get started – don’t be intimidated.”

Jeremy Nehring is a well-known social media guru with No Name Media.

He is a short video content creator with 1.2 million followers on TikTok. “You have to have something that is relatable and entertaining,” Nehring said. “When you’re creating it ask yourself ‘would I share this?’”

Put out the content across all platforms, he said. “Let people decide. It might be for Instagram but it could be put on TikTok or Facebook. It’s kind of like Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield contending against each other.”

Don’t over complicate it, said Nehring. “Use three to five hashtags. It’s less painful. It’s not like a billboard that you look up and see. A short video can be put up then another one. Reps, reps, reps. Over the process of time you’ll tell a story. Entertainment makes sense given the time everybody’s on there.”

Do a 15 second video and see how it plays out, he said. “Is it too short? Is it too long? Build a network through branding and education. Start a personal account then once it takes off convert it to a professional one.”

Get a feel of what people like, Nehring said. “It doesn’t have to be all dancing, it will evolve. Like, comment and share. Direct eyeballs where you want them. Cause some trouble and have some fun. Just get it out there.” l

Dreams do come true in CenterPoint’s ‘Cinderella’

CENTERVILLE—A fairy godmother, a glass slipper, a wicked stepmother and a pinch of magic all come together in CenterPoint Legacy Theatre’s production of “Cinderella.” Filled with the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, this timeless classic retells the fairytale generations have come to love.

After her father dies, beautiful young Ella is left with her demanding and cruel stepmother Madame and her two stepsisters Charlotte and Gabrielle who treat her as a servant. Ella makes friends with the animals in the forest, a woman named “crazy Marie” and student Jean-Michel who wants to get out from under the kingdom’s rule.

Meanwhile, Prince Topher has recently returned from university to take his place as king. On his journey home he meets Ella, who gives him water. He treats her with kindness and not like a peasant, leaving her dreaming of the handsome prince.

When he reaches the castle, Prince Topher is unsure about where he fits in the kingdom. His trusted advisor Sebastian suggests Topher needs a wife and makes preparations to invite the villagers to a masquerade ball with the hope he will find his bride.

Through a bit of magic and a few surprises, Ella attends the ball and meets the prince who is immediately taken by her beauty and charm only to have her run away at the stroke of midnight.

Audiences will be charmed by the beloved fairytale mixed with a few storyline changes that add to the fun.

Mailee Halpin and Doug Wadley are enchanting as Ella and Prince Topher (MWF cast). PARC helps people with disabilities fulfill their dreams

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com CLEARFIELD—For many adults with disabilities, it can be hard to find meaningful work. The Pioneer Adult Rehabilitation Center (PARC) not only helps those individuals with employment but encourages them to discover their passion so they can be successful.

“We look at all aspects of their life to find out what their skill sets are,” said Melanie Pelletier, Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE) program manager. “We get to know the individual to find a job that fits.”

PARC started in 1971 as the Davis Developmental Center, said Executive Director Ken Naegle. “Bob Daniels was a coach and worked in special education for the district. They asked him to be the director. There were 12 individuals they worked with at the Monte Vista Center. They worked with a local drugstore to have them do custodial work. As it grew they moved us to the bus shop in Kaysville near Davis

High School.”

In 1984, PARC moved to its current site, he said. “It was an old elementary school called the Pioneer school. That’s when the name was changed to Pioneer Rehabilitation Center. Then we inherited this building (485 PARC Circle, Clearfield). We had a lot of different contracts at that time.”

At this location they did parts sorting and there was a small custodial crew at HAFB, said Naegle. “We covered 10-12 buildings. Through doing a good job it increased base wide in 1996.”

In addition to custodial work, clients work out in the community at grocery stores, restaurants and one individual prepares the uniforms for U of U sports teams. “He loves the U,” Naegle said. “Now he wakes up every morning and he’s not going to work, he's doing something he loves.”

The CIE program works with a network of businesses to try and find the best job match for both the employee and employer. “We meet with

the business to see if we’re a fit,” said Pelletier. “We provide job coaching and help with training. We give them the support they need because many of them have never had a job. We teach soft skills like learning how to clock in, etc.”

“One person has autism and works at a restaurant,” said Naegle. “He couldn’t really engage with people so he was doing clean up. The waitresses were rolling up silverware in napkins so we said ‘let him wrap the silverware. It will give him more hours and help your staff.’ He became the hero of the place. We are always looking for ways to customize their job.”

PARC has moved from an employment training model to a community training model, said Matt Elston, Community Integrated Services (CIS) program manager. “We have folks who participate in providing meals to the homeless, volunteer at the Davis/Weber animal shelters and we’ve adopted a beach on Antelope Island. We are helping individuals with disabilities to gain the skills they need and prepare them for the life they want to create for themselves.”

The Bloom Utah program is designed to help individuals create cards, candles and other decor that

can be sold and the proceeds go to the participants. Karen Bingham with CIS oversees the program.

“PARC pays for 100 percent of the supplies,” she said. “Chelle’s Florist Shop nearby has a corner for us to sell what our participants have made.

As soon as we build up our stock we’re selling out.”

Brandon Dool has been coming to PARC since 2015 and loves to crochet.

“I’m making cup holders for police officers to thank them for all they do,” he said. “I like to go to stores and buy stuff. I like computers and playing games. I love FrontRunner and movies.

All kinds of movies.”

Jace works at Smith’s twice a week. “I bag groceries and I like stocking the shelves,” he said. “I like doing tasks and getting a bunch of money.

I’ve worked at Smith’s for three years.

I work hard every day.”

Naegle took one man who is in a wheelchair fishing. “He caught a fish and held it up and said ‘Ken, this is the first fish I’ve caught.’ I thought ‘I’m honored to be with you.’ It’s one of those thrilling moments that happen.”

PARC’s mission is to find what helps a person become who they are, said Naegle. “It’s exciting to see them fulfilling their dreams.” l

Council to discuss fiber survey at March 22 meeting

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—The first step in determining the future of fiber in Bountiful has been completed, with a statistical survey conducted by a contracted vendor to be reviewed at the Bountiful City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 22.

The meeting agenda will be published on the city’s website, bountifulutah.gov.

Council voted on Aug. 24 to enter into a contract with Magellan Advisors for a broadband feasibility study. The study will cost $67,500 and should take about six months to complete. The goal is to determine if Bountiful City should have a city owned and operated (O&O) system, or work with a provider owned and operated system. A third option would have the city taking no action at all and let the free enterprise system continue to be the provider for residents, but council agreed that was not a preferred option.

Last April, the city formed a RFI Committee (RFI standing for Request for Information) which released a list

of 12 potential providers for fiber. From there, four providers were identified to meet with the committee for further discussion and to provide more information.

Two providers, Google and UTOPIA Fiber, submitted proposals for a Provider O&O Network. Two other vendors, EntryPoint Networks and Strata Networks, submitted proposals to work with the city in a Bountiful O&O Network.

Alan West, the city’s I.T. director, reported to council that the RFI committee reached out to Lehi City, which started to build out its own fiberto-home network. He said Lehi used Magellan to do feasibility studies on the concept, after which the city’s council voted to approve a bond to build the network. That bond would be paid for with revenue the city receives as customers subscribe to the network.

“The purpose of the survey was to measure resident’s satisfaction with their internet service,” said city manager Gary Hill. “We asked about customer service, what they would want to see in order to change a provider or get

Costs increase slightly for animal control services

he Bountiful City Council recently approved an amendment to the city’s Interlocal Control Agreement for Animal Control Services provided

by Davis County. The amendment included a slight increase of $13,960.36 for services above the assessed rates.

Bountiful entered into the agreement in 2016, and as with each city in the county, it outlined a plan to address ongoing operating and capital costs through a 50-50 city-county cost sharing plan. Each city’s cost share is based on a two-year average of animal control call volume. For 2021, Bountiful’s usage rate was 9.62 percent of the total calls Animal Control Services received. That usage rate equated to a cost of $135,265.85.

for the city’s portion of the county’s Capital Projects Fund for the shelter in Fruit Heights. So the total obligation was $140,672.29.

A report issued by Davis County as new agreements were sent for renewal to the cities show the cost of doing business with animals. Budgeted expenditures for 2022 include $2,359.650 for personnel, $535, 949 for operations, $320,843 for capital equipment, and $176,349.88 for allocations. Total expenditures are projected at $3,374,792.

Conversely, projected revenues show $202,216 for licenses, $135,311 for shelter fees, $78,000 for adoptions, $18,085 for donations, and a budget adjustment of $129,000. So the difference between expenditures and revenues is $2,812,180, with half of that total coming from cities through the Interlocal Control Agreement. l

Cost comparisons available for medical cannabis services

ith the increasing number of Utahns who are using medical cannabis, the state’s Utah Health Cost Compare website now provides costs for patients filling those prescriptions.

HealthCost.utah.gov includes the costs of initial evaluations for those with or without insurance, as well as cannabis renewal visits. It lists all dispensaries in the state.

State Sen. Luz Escamilla said the program, created by the Office of the State Auditor in conjunction with the Utah Department of Health, “will assist patients in their pursuit of critical health care resources and will protect them against predatory practices.”

“Some patients struggle to afford the cost of medical visits and it is great to see that patients now have the ability to easily compare prices charged by medical providers who offer medical cannabis evaluations,” said Richard Oborn of the UDH Center for Medical Cannabis. “We hope they can connect with a medical provider who can best help them at a reasonable price.”

From Lisa’s Kitchen: Tres Leche Cake Ingredients:

Cake Mix: 1 1/2 C Flour 1 1/2 t Baking Powder 1/4 t Salt 5 Eggs, separated 3/4 C Sugar for egg yolks 1/4 C Sugar for egg whites 1 C Milk (whatever you have on hand) 2 t Vanilla Syrup: 1 Can of Evaporated Milk 1 Can of Condensed Milk 1/3 C Heavy cream 1. t Vanilla Topping: 2 C Heavy whipping cream 1/2 – 1/3 C Sugar 1 C strawberries, thinly sliced Directions: Preheat oven to 350° Cake: Combine in medium bowl flour, baking powder and salt.

In two other bowls, separate the

eggs – whites from the yolk To the five egg yolks add 3/4 C sugar – mix until pale yellow and smooth (2 min.)

To the five egg whites add 1/4 C egg whites – mix until white peaks (about 6 min.)

To the dry ingredients add egg yolk/ sugar mix. mix until mostly combined – then add milk and vanilla and continue to mix until a smooth cake batter consistency (not overly runny) Add egg white mixture by FOLDING them in with spatula (cut in and twirl).

Continue to gently combine – until all the egg whites are folded in (8-10 minutes).

Prepare and grease a 9x13 dish with spray or butter – pour cake mix – tapping to get air bubbles out a bit.

Bake 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 30-60 minutes at room temperature. Take a fork and make small holes all over the cake – this is where syrup will seep into the cake.

Syrup: Combine evaporated milk,

condensed milk, heavy cream and vanilla. After the cake has cooled and been “forked,” pour syrup over the cake – starting with around the edges. One may want to even add a few more holes to help the syrup sink in.

Topping: In chilled bowl and beaters, add heavy whipping cream and sugar.

Spread over cake after the syrup has soaked in. Decorate with prepared strawberries.

Store in refrigerator. Note that the syrup will seep through to the baking dish when serving – it is supposed to – SUCCESS!

‘Deep Water’ dull, but great acting in ‘The Outfit’

It takes a lot of work to make murder boring.

Somehow, though, “Deep Water” manages it. Premiering on Hulu this weekend, the movie drains most of the life out of the story of a deeply dysfunctional marriage turned homicidal. The cast is good, and the original story has plenty of tension, but director Adrian Lyne doesn’t care much about that. He’s too focused on a marriage that seems largely incomprehensible to those watching, and though he clearly cares a great deal he never finds a reason to make us do the same.

The movie focuses on Ben Affleck as a suburban man with a wife (Ana de Armas) who cheats on him constantly.

He says it’s fine even though his neighbors keep pointing it out, then turns around and tells his wife’s new boyfriend that he killed the last one. When the bodies start piling up, his wife starts to think that he really is a killer.

Unfortunately, the movie tends to treat the murders almost like an afterthought, relegating them to flashbacks or filming them like they were household chores. Lyne is far more interested in watching Affleck stare off into the distance, or at de Armas, while the movie tries to tell us that something important is happening. Occasionally, we’ll get conversations.

Though both performers try to imbue these moments with depth and tension, there’s only so much they can do when they have so little to work with. The fact that the script jettisons an entire branch of the original story’s plot doesn’t help at all, nor does the movie’s almost complete lack of emotional context. The entire movie depends on the deeper nuances of their marriage, but for most of the movie it’s impossible to tell what they actually are.

The result is confusion, boredom, and the futile wish that more people would die. At least that way, something interesting might finally happen.

Grade:  One and a half stars

The Outfit (in theaters)

Sometimes, the best thing about a movie is watching a particular actor strut their stuff.

Though the movie has other charms, the real reason to watch “The Outfit” is watching Mark Rylance do what he does best. He’s quietly electric every moment he’s onscreen, a subtle engine still powerful enough to drive the story. The twisty, theatrical thriller can drag at times, but never when Rylance is the focus.

In the movie, which opens in theaters this weekend, he plays a tailor with a mysterious past who makes fancy suits for the mob. When a mobster’s son makes him stitch up a gunshot wound, he overhears a secret he’s not supposed to know and gets caught up in a web of intrigue. Who’s lying to who, and what will it take to survive the night?

The movie is incredibly theatrical, with closeups being the main difference between this and watching a stage play. That’s a good thing when it comes to Rylance, who fills his perfor-

mance with nuances that clue you in to what’s happening even when the script doesn’t. Of course, you might not want to trust his clues, since he layers his performance to the point that you’re never sure what’s true and what’s a carefully tailored lie.

The movie shared some of the same tailoring, with twists that unspool like a clockwork machine. There are times when it ticks by much too slowly, leaning too hard into its theatrical nature through a seemingly endless string of conversations. Still, there’s a nice complexity to it that keeps your attention.

At the heart of it all is Rylance.

Even if you don’t like anything else about the movie, it’s hard not to love watching a master at work.

Wildcats’ playoff run increases optimism for the future

I

t’s not out of the ordinary for a lower-seeded team to contend for a state title. But that doesn’t take away from what the Woods Cross boys basketball team did during the recent playoffs.

The Wildcats capped a surprising postseason run by reaching the state finals where they lost to top-seeded and one-loss Olympus 40-31 on March 5. The Wildcats entered the Class 5A state tournament as the No. 7 seed but put together four wins to reach the finals. Their final two wins – in the quarterfinals against Orem and the semifinals against Murray – were over higher-seeded teams.

It may not have been a huge shock that the underdog Wildcats did so well. After all, in Class 6A, the state champion was 10th seeded American Fork. Still, Woods Cross wasn’t one of the top contenders going into the playoffs. Earlier in the season, the Wildcats were sitting with a 5-5 record after a blowout loss to Cyprus on Dec. 30. The team was also a mediocre 3-2 five games into the region schedule.

The Wildcats got better as the season went along.

Woods Cross finished second in Region 5 with a 7-3 record and went 18-9 overall. It was a significant improvement over last year’s 10-12 (2-8 in Region 5) campaign.

By the time the Wildcats got to state, some tough regular season games had prepared them for the winor-go-home postseason.

“The kids trusted in our game plan each playoff game and executed extremely well,” head coach Justin Margetts said. “Playing in close games throughout the season helped us gain the confidence in those situations. We preach discipline and taking care of the ball, and we were great

with that for most of the playoff run.”

Despite falling short against a powerful Olympus team, Margetts was pleased with his players’ effort.

“I am so proud of my guys for the determination they showed in that game,” he said. “The outcome wasn’t what we wanted, but outside of Davis,

we played them better than anyone all season and really gave ourselves a shot. I was so proud of how we defended and battled.”

Any final game of the season is filled with emotion. The feelings are much higher when it’s a state championship game. Coming so

close but missing out on the top prize was disappointing, but Margetts had some wise, encouraging words for his squad.

“There were tears and hung heads – lots of disappointment,” he said.

Softball teams taking the field

now or no snow, local teams are preparing for the 2022 prep softball season. Here’s a look at the squads.

Davis

Third-year coach Todd Street has several upperclassmen returning this season to lead a team aiming for a deeper run in the postseason than its first-round exit last spring.

Senior shortstop Alix Thaxton, senior left fielder Sadie Hathaway, senior first baseman Larkyn Robinson, senior third baseman Avery Kartchner, senior Aubrey Noriega, junior pitcher Nina Attanasio and junior centerfielder Laney Tuft will be looked to lead the Darts on the field with junior second baseman Abby Olsen and sophomore catcher Rayleigh Starnes also figuring to be key players this year.

“We are looking forward to a great season,” Street said. “These girls work really hard, have great attitudes and love playing together.

Also on the 2022 DHS squad are juniors Ellie Black, Abbey Hicks and Kenzie Miller; sophomores Gracie George and Sydney Marrelli; and freshmen Tempe Haslam, Hadlee Isaacs, Katie Klauman, Libby Miller and Emma Worthington.

Davis began the season at the March Warm-up Elite tournament in St. George March 11-12. The Darts won four out of five games – defeating Summit Academy 20-0, Coconino, Ariz. 11-8, Woods Cross 19-10 and Mountain View 10-4 while losing to Hurricane 10-9 – and “gained some valuable experience,” according to Street.

Davis is also scheduled to play Viewmont March 15 and Box Elder March 16.

“Our focus is always to just keep getting a little better each day and to continue to improve each day and game,” Street said.

Street is being assisted on the coaching staff this season by Rainy Dold, Derek Hathaway, Dave Noriega and Eli Anderson.

Farmington

Three college-bound seniors – pitcher Delaney Baker (who signed

with Brigham Young University), second baseman Paige Herbon (Utah State University-Eastern) and third baseman/ catcher Hadley Eichmeier (Colorado Northwestern Community College) – will lead a Farmington squad that was sixth in 5A last season.

The remainder of the complete starting lineup that is back for the Phoenix includes four juniors in shortstop Elle Mortensen, catcher Courtney Christiansen, outfielder Kate Hansen and third baseman/designated hitter Lisa Rasmussen, and sophomores Nev Carrasquel (outfielder/utility player), Madison Kelker (pitcher/infielder) and outfielder Lexi Crowley.

Fourth-year coach Jasey Fatongia also noted that she expects freshman outfielder Lola Ogzewalla to contribute on the field for her squad.

Fatongia said her team has worked hard in preparation for this season.

“We really focused on doing the small things, finishing every inning and play, team chemistry and having fun,” she said. “We want to compete and finish strong every game and continue to get better and make a statement in Region 1 and state.”

Also on the FHS 2022 team are juniors Riley Echardt, Raegan McFarland, Eva O’Brein, Hannah Ritz and Ashley Muir; sophomores Hannah Barton, Ryan Bennion and Lilly Nelson; and freshman Brooklyn Wright.

The Phoenix will play Syracuse March 16 and travel to the Snow Canyon Tournament in St. George March 17-19 before opening Region 1 play.

Fatongia is being assisted on the coaching staff by Cal Yoshimura, Rae Stensland and John Mortensen.

Bountiful

Bountiful begins the season with a number two ranking among the 5A classification after an undefeated Region 5 showing and then losing in the semifinals a year ago to eventual champion Spanish Fork.

“It’s actually kind of a rebuilding year with losing nine seniors. I could probably start four freshman and we have some question marks for outfield,” said head coach Butch Latey, who is in his 18th year at Bountiful.

“But, we just try and coach ‘em up. We do have some base threats with some fast girls and that’s my game. Our

region could be really good this year.”

Senior shortstop Shiloh Johnson, who recently signed to play for Garden City Community College in Kansas, and junior pitcher Eva Stoddard will lead the upperclassmen this season, with several young players expected to contribute on the field as well. Latey is excited for the offense, speed and versatility that sophomore catcher Athena Tongaonvia, sophomore center fielder Mylie Burnes, sophomore utility player/pitcher Malissa Turpin, sophomore outfielder Frankie Galeana, freshman pitcher Claire Yates and freshman Isabeau Hoff will bring to the lineup.

Also on the 2022 BHS squad are

seniors Sydney Gouff and Izzy Rodrigues; juniors Avery Mecham, Lilly Pickett and Ashlyn Watson; sophomores Kennedie Arenaz, Mia Debois, Abrie Mitchell and Katelyn Rodgers; and freshman Ella Miller.

Latey will be assisted on the coaching staff this season by Ron Osborn, Steph Holmes and Kyli Flanary.

Bountiful was set for the season to begin March 8, but the spring season began with cancellations. Instead, the Redhawks are scheduled to face Copper Hills March 16 and travel to St. George for the Snow Canyon Invitational March 17-19.

Viewmont

Viewmont brings back much of its 2021 starting varsity squad, having graduated just two seniors, with the offensive firepower expected to come from senior Anna Moore, sophomore Kennedy Embrey and sophomore Molly Roberts. Senior Oakley Sovic and sophomore Lily Hawker will lead a “solid defense,” according to head coach Stacie Toney, with junior Sydni Steed “keeping the infield steady as always.”

The Vikings, who were winless in Region 5 a year ago, have been putting in the work this off-season. “Our focus was to become more efficient and be better at the little things,” said Toney, who is in her fourth year at Viewmont.

“We need to play the game faster and we’re on our way to meeting that goal.”

Also on the 2022 VHS squad are seniors Emily Egnew, Grace Nielson and Oakley Sovic; juniors Amanda

Barton, Samantha Bice and Jenavieve Eggett; sophomores Haley Rodabough and Lily Wright; and freshmen Karli Dickerson, Sophie Gold, Emi Jones and Kaitlyn Riley.

Toney is being assisted on the coaching staff by Monte Roberts and Mike Embrey.

“I want the girls to compete at a high level and enjoy their time together,” Toney said. “We are always seeing huge improvements and momentum in week one. Our freshman class will push us this year. It’ll be exciting to see what these girls can do this year.”

Viewmont began the season traveling to the March Warm Up Elite Tournament in St. George March 10-12 where they defeated Mountain View 14-6, Brighton 14-7, Summit Academy 16-5 and Granger 14-2 with one loss to Hurricane 16-5.

The Wildcats spent much of the off-season on fundamentals of hitting and understanding the game, according to Plowman. “Pre-season is learning the game, making mistakes, getting better and making memories along with great friendships,” she said.

At the March Warm-up Elite Tournament in St. George March 1112, Woods Cross went 3-2 with wins over Granger 14-2, Brighton 12-9 and Summit Academy 9-0 while losing to Coconino, Ariz. 10-0 and Davis 19-10.

“We had a lot of fun,” Plowman said.

Seasonal trail camera restrictions remain for hunters

H

unters beware. The Utah Wildlife Board has voted to keep trail camera restrictions in place for those attempting to harvest big game in the state.

A trail camera is defined as a device that is not held or manually operated by a person and is used to capture images, video or location data of wildlife and uses heat or motion to trigger the device. The Utah Legislature passed HB 295 during the 2021 legislative session, and it went into effect May 5, 2021.

This new law instructed the Utah Wildlife Board to make some rules governing the use of trail cameras in hunting.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources conducted two separate surveys of more than 16,000 big game hunters, asking for feedback on the rule.

The survey showed that the majority of the public opposed using transmitting trail cameras for hunting – cameras that transmit images and footage in real time. So at a board meeting earlier this year, members voted to prohibit the use of all trail cameras, including non-handheld transmitting and non-transmitting devices, in the harvest or to aid in the harvest of big game between July 31 and Dec. 31.

“We truly believed in each other and believed we were the best team in the state in those playoffs. I told them they had so much to be proud of. I told the seniors that we had massive shoes to fill and that we would remember them and play for them. I told the underclassmen to remember how they felt as they saw Olympus running onto the floor and celebrating.”

The milestone of playing for a state championship was something the Woods Cross program hadn’t experienced since Ronald Reagan’s first term as U.S. president. After the Wildcats defeated Murray 59-47 on March 2 in the University of Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center, the players were elated.

“They were so excited,” Margetts said. “They knew it was a big deal to our community and were the first team in four decades to make it back to the title game.”

“Due to considerable feedback on the rule change, the Utah Wildlife Board was required by state statute to hold an administrative rule appeal hearing – different from a normal wildlife board meeting – to hear additional public comments on the issue,” said Faith Heaton Jolley, public information officer for DWR “After several hours of comments and discussion, the board voted to keep the current seasonal restrictions for trail camera use.”

What this means is that the use of any trail camera or non-held device during the harvest dates is prohibited on both public and private property. The rule also prohibits the sale or purchase of trail camera footage or data that could be used “to take, attempt to take, or aid in the take or attempted take of big game animals,” Jolley said. “That includes images or video, location information, time and date of the footage and any other data that could aid in the harvest of attempted take of big game.”

Landowners can still use cameras to monitor their property or monitor active agricultural operations, and government and educational organizations gathering wildlife information are also permitted to use them.

Jolley said the board also voted to keep the same restrictions on the use of night-vision devices to locate or attempt to locate a big game animal.

A night-vision device is defined as anything that enhances visible and non-visible light and includes the use of night-vision devices, thermal-imaging devices, infrared-imaged devices and other electronic devices that enhance the visible and non-visible light spectrum. l

Nominated for 12 Oscars, “The Power of the Dog” (2021) is a complex and highly acclaimed film based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel of the same name, and among its other feats, it has provided English actor Benedict Cumberbatch with his second-ever Academy Award nomination, for his role as Montana rancher Phil Burbank.

(The first was for 2014’s “The Imitation Game.”)

Cumberbatch’s Burbank is a sinister, skulking character fit for a psychological drama. As Cumberbatch plays the volatile malcontent (to put it nicely), he also unfolds his character’s history of sexual repression. It takes an astute interpreter of script, self and historical perceptions to pull off a role this intricate, but Cumberbatch’s resume speaks wonders to his ability to bring Burbank to life.

Born July 17, 1976, in London, England, Cumberbatch’s mother, Wanda Ventham, had her own successful acting career and appeared in several British television series such as “Doctor Who” and “Only Fools and Horses.” Young Cumberbatch, meanwhile, attended private schools in West Sussex and later joined The Terence Rattigan Society, a prestigious arts institution that helped launch his theatrical debut.

Armed with plenty of stage credit and Shakespearean experience, Cumberbatch worked in television for a handful of years before making his film breakthrough in 2006’s “Starter for 10” alongside James McAvoy (“Split,” 2016).

Prior to this, in 2004, Cumberbatch was reportedly kidnapped during a carjacking while filming a BBC trilogy series on location in South Africa.

Reflecting on the incident, the actor says, “It taught me that you come into this world as you leave it, on your own.

It’s made me want to live a life slightly less ordinary.”

his is the time of year when deer and other wildlife may wander in our streets or other fields close to homes. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources officials are reminding the public not to feed deer or other wildlife. While it is not illegal, there are several reasons it is highly discouraged, including public safety concerns, the spread of chronic wasting disease among deer, elk and moose, and potential harm to wildlife from introducing foods not in their diets, particularly during winter months.

Whenever someone feeds wildlife, those animals will frequently return to that area in search of food.

These areas are often near roads and sometimes within neighborhoods.

Concentrating deer and other wildlife near inhabited areas can sometimes result in increased traffic accidents and other human/wildlife conflicts.

“Help yourself and the wildlife by allowing them to remain wild, and avoid conflicts by not feeding them,” DWR Big Game Coordinator Covy Jones said.

One concern is Chronic wasting disease. It is a relatively rare, but fatal transmissible disease that affects the nervous systems of deer, elk and moose. The disease is caused by a protein particle, called a prion, that attaches to the brain and spinal cord. It is caused by the same type of particle as “mad cow disease” in cows. Infected animals develop brain lesions, become emaciated, appear listless and have droopy ears. They may also salivate excessively and eventually die.

Infected animals may shed prions in their urine, feces and saliva. Transmission may occur directly through contact with an infected animal or indirectly through environmental contamination. (A dead carcass can contaminate the soil.) Prions are extremely resilient in the environment and can stay infectious for years.

Because the prions are shed in saliva, urine and feces, and they can persist in the environment for a long time, chronic wasting disease is easily transmitted in areas where a large number of deer congregate.

Feeding deer can cause large groups of them to crowd together in one area, increasing the chance of the disease spreading from one animal to the next.

“Because the disease is so contagious, it is essential that residents do not feed deer or put out food that will attract them,” DWR Veterinarian Ginger Stout said. “This includes putting out corn, hay, dog food or birdseed that deer might easily access. Although it may seem like a beneficial thing to do during the winter months, feeding deer actually accelerates the spread of chronic wasting disease because it causes the deer to congregate.”

Fortunately, the disease is not widespread throughout Utah, and is primarily found in a few counties in

central, northeastern and southeastern Utah. The DWR takes CWD very seriously and conducts extensive monitoring each year to stay on top of the disease and its prevalence in the state.

While the Centers for Disease Control says the risk of transmission from animals to humans is considered extremely low, they recommend not consuming meat from animals infected with chronic wasting disease. Any deer that looks sick (i.e., has trouble walking, drools, has drooping ears or looks emaciated) should be reported to the nearest DWR office.

Introducing the wrong type of food to wildlife can also harm them, especially during the winter. Deer are ruminants — mammals that acquire nutrients from plant-based food by fermenting it in a specialized stomach before digestion.

Deer have four-part stomachs, and each stomach chamber progressively breaks down woody, leafy and grassy foods into smaller particles.

These stomach chambers contain microbes that are essential to digesting food. The type of microbes in a deer’s digestive system gradually change throughout the year and are very specific to the food that is available. During the winter, deer primarily feed on sagebrush and other woody

plants. Suddenly changing a deer's diet can easily lead to the deer eating food that it cannot readily digest. In these situations, deer often die from starvation with full stomachs.

When deer congregate to feed, it's every deer for itself. The larger deer often push the smaller deer — the fawns — aside, and they often end up receiving less food than they would have received if people had left them alone.

“This is why feeding deer and other wildlife is usually not a good idea,” Jones said. “Although it sounds like an act of kindness and may sometimes help some animals get through the cold months, it can often create major problems.”

The DWR does occasionally feed deer in specific emergency situations when supplemental feeding is beneficial. For example, deer herds in critical wintering areas that are caught in unusually deep and long-lasting snow might benefit from winter feeding.

The division also feeds elk during the winter at the Hardware Wildlife Management Area to help prevent local agricultural damage from the large elk herds. However, the elk are routinely monitored and tested for disease, and the feed is specialized so as not to harm the animals.l

Sheila Jean Hassell Jewkes Dec. 4, 1950 – March 13, 2022

Sheila passed away due to COVID pneumonia on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful Utah. She was surrounded by her five children as she lovingly slipped away from this life. Sheila was the oldest daughter of Clayton R. Hassell and the late Barbara Jean Perkins.

Born and raised in Ashland, Oregon along with her younger brother and sisters, close to friends and grandparents and cousins. She loved to go boating and camping with her family and friends. She participated in musicals and dance festivals throughout her youth. Sheila took piano lessons for eight years and became a beautifully talented and accomplished pianist. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1969. In 1970 She moved to Provo Utah to attend BYU. She loved her time there and spoke often about her experiences living in Heritage Halls.

At BYU Sheila met and fell in love with David Jewkes. They were married in the Los Angeles Temple in April of 1972. They lived in Provo Utah, Bakersfield California, Orem Utah, Salt Lake City and in 1985 they moved their family to Bountiful Utah; She remained in Bountiful the rest of her life. Sheila and David were divorced in 1990.

Sheila is the loving mother of five children, and adoring grandmother of 23 grandchildren. This past year she became a great-grandmother to Saylor and Luke.

Her favorite place was inside the Bountiful Temple and she spent many hours serving there. Sheila served in many callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Relief Society teacher, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Young Women President, ward chorister, Cub Scout leader, Activity Days leader, Primary counselor, and Primary pianist. She volunteered at the Church History Museum on Temple Square in 20152016. Her favorite calling was as a fulltime missionary in the Bentonville Arkansas Mission from January 2017 – August 2018.

After her mission Sheila loved working at Bountiful Internal Medicine practice at Lakeview in Bountiful.

She also worked for several years in

the church Real Estate department.

Everyone that met Sheila loved to be around her. She was a beautiful example of Christ-like love and understanding. She made everyone comfortable in her presence and was always cheerful. She will be greatly missed.

Sheila is preceded in death by her mother Barbara Jean and her son-inlaw Cory Marc Horton.

She is survived by her father, Clayton R. Hassell (Judy), brother Clayton David Hassell, sisters Cheryl Hickok (Wayne), Sharon, Shelly (Paul) and Amanda Rhoades. Daughters Amy Lindsey (Austin), Jill King (Jason), and Jennifer Horton. Sons Troy Paul Jewkes, and Kelly David Jewkes (Stacey).

23 grandchildren: Mason (Kennedy), Jake (Erica), Maegan, Brooke (Keaton), Britney, Kobe, Emma, Kaylee, Devin, Katelyn, T.J., Derek, Pearl, Kelsey, Michael, Violet, Tyreek, Jacee, Alaysha, Mack.

Funeral services will be on Friday, March 18, 2022 at 11 a.m. at the West Bountiful 2nd ward chapel located at 840 North 800 West in West Bountiful, where a viewing will take place from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services.

OBITUARIES Cameron Jason Wood Dec. 21, 2004 – March 11, 2022

Cameron Jason Wood returned to his Heavenly Father on March 11, 2022, at the tender age of 17. He has now found peace after a sudden step forward on his eternal journey.

Cameron was born to loving parents on Dec. 21, 2004, in Oceanside, California. After that, he spent most of his life growing up in Bountiful, Utah. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a large family and group of friends whom he loved very much.

Cameron, or “Boo” as we called him, was a junior at Bountiful High School where he had a great affinity for art and being a peer tutor for kids with special needs. He loved skateboarding, drawing, and animals. He was rarely pictured without a big smile and some treasured animal in his arms. He had a great sense of humor and was always trying to make people laugh. He loved camping, fishing, four-wheeling, and being in the outdoors.

Boo loved trying exotic foods and had a brave palette. He had an affinity for Sweden that he could never quite explain but embraced wholeheartedly. Cameron was excited to visit there someday.

Cameron exemplified his Christ-like character by always putting others before himself, even amidst his own struggles.

He was compassionate, caring, and loved everyone around him. Even in death, he has helped many others through organ donation. He is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Cameron is survived by his parents: Melissa Prince Misener and Anthony Misener, and Jason and Lana Wood; his siblings: Lindsey Misener Herzog (Alex), Michael Childs, Brennan Misener, Kelsey Childs (fiancé Ryan), Katelynn Misener,

In 1961, she became a trailblazer as the first African-American woman to work as a reporter at The Washington Post, one of the largest newspapers in the United States.
