Davis County Ukrainians react to Russian invasion

I

t’s hard to be away from family and friends when they are suffering, especially more than 5,800 miles away. For many residents in Davis County who came from or have recently visited Ukraine, the invasion by Russia that began last week has been heartbreaking and terrifying. It has been for many Americans and citizens of other countries as well.

She and her husband Sam live in Fruit Heights, and though her family members still in Ukraine were waiting for this to happen, “nobody believed it would.”

She joined with hundreds of others at a rally held last Saturday in front of the Utah State Capitol. Members of the Utah Ukrainian Association organized the rally, as well as a second one held Monday night, to show support for their countrymen and women. “My mother Nadia lives here with us, but my mom’s sisters and my brother’s daughter still live there,” Million said.

“Although they are now permanent residents of Utah, they are still not completely moved here and were getting ready to leave Ukraine when this happened. They were stuck in Kyiv and went to a little cottage about an hour away and are staying there.”

She said she’s been able to speak to them, and the family still has water and power, but “even though Russia says they’re only aimed at strategic targets, their artillery is destroying homes and buildings and killing civilians.”

Yulia Holko is a former resident of Bountiful now living in Salt Lake City. She is a director with the association and spoke at Saturday’s rally, thanking the huge crowd for coming out in support of Ukraine.

“As you know, Ukrainians are fighting for their land,” she told the crowd. “They’re fighting for the values of democracy, freedom, and to be free of terror. Putin is a dangerous man, and he will not stop at Ukraine.

If the world doesn’t stop him now, he will be at the doorstep of Europe tomorrow.”

Holko, who has lived in the U.S. for 20 years, said her family back home is terrified, because there’s so much uncertainty. “They don’t know exactly what to do – it kind of changes by the hour. Some of them are thinking of going to Poland, but it’s very hard and some roads are blocked and the gas shortage is very serious. Some of them are picking up guns and fighting, or helping in any way they can.”

And she said her friends who are journalists in Ukraine are obviously standing

Oksana Andriishyn lives in Centerville with her mother Inia and a daughter. She moved to the U.S. 12-½ years ago, first living in Arizona and then Chicago before coming to Utah. But her father, a sister and niece, and her two grandmothers still live in Ukraine. One of her grandmothers who has been hiding in a bomb shelter with other family members survived the German-Soviet war in 1941.

“She still remembers how they had to run for their lives, and experiences the same fears again these days,” Andriishyn said.

Just before Saturday’s rally, she spoke on the phone to a couple of relatives in Ukraine.

“They heard a siren go off and ran to the basement for safety,” she said. “I have a few male cousins who’ve agreed to join the military. They are the only males that we rely on and we’re proud of them that they’ve made the decision to defend our country.”

She credits the resilience of the Ukrainian people to the fact that “we’ve had war for the past eight years. It’s never stopped. They just continue shooting in the east. I guess Ukrainians just got tired of being bullied.”

Like so many others, Andriishyn is frustrated that other nations like the U.S. can’t participate in this war because it could escalate into a worldwide conflict. But she wishes someone could give the country air support. Going to the rally was “at least something we could do so the world can hear us and see us. We’re so thankful for all who are helping in any way they can.”

Hunsaker committed to Utah State Hospital for mental health treatment FARMINGTON—A Second District Court Judge ordered last week that a man accused of killing a woman he met on Tinder be committed to the Utah State Hospital for mental health treatment before serving his 15 years to life sentence.

Judge David Connors found that Ethan Hunsaker would pose a threat to himself or others “if placed in a correctional or probation setting.”

Hunsaker pleaded guilty but mentally ill in July to strangling and stabbing Ashlyn Black on May 24, 2020 after the two met on the Tinder dating app.

Connors ordered that Hunsaker undergo a mental health assessment before sentencing. The judge ruled that Hunsaker would be at the State Hospital until he was stable or until 18-months had elapsed.

When he did, Morgan allegedly took hold of the officer’s arm and bit him, charging documents stated.

Man bites officer after standoff with police FARMINGTON—Police arrested a Bountiful man last week after he was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident that caused a standoff with law enforcement then later bit an officer.

Max Gorishek Morgan, 77, was charged with assault by a prisoner and damaging a jail, domestic violence assault, domestic violence assault and interference with an arresting officer and intoxication.

According to charging documents, a woman reported to police that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend and there were guns in the home.

rom listening to people, the most common dissatisfaction with life is the inability “to get ahead financially.” Incomes rise, but cost-of-living also jumps. Savings rates are meager, and more families feel like they are pushed out of the so-called middle class.

Some of this has to do with our lifestyle. Compared to our parents’ generation, most of us dine out more, travel more frequently, have a different idea of a “starter home,” drive automobiles with all-inclusive features, and devote a larger portion of our income on phone, internet, television, and other technological devices and services. Our expectations have soared, and with that comes a cost. We are a society that pays for conveniences (bottled water?).

But it is true that there is a growing chasm between the “haves” and “have nots.”

Adjusted for inflation, median incomes in Utah have been flat since 2002. Some 20% of Utahns are spending at least half or more of their income on housing. An international report on income claims that 95% of the

BY BRYAN GRAY economic growth since 2019 was grabbed by the wealthiest 1% of Americans while 70% actually lost ground. (Even worse international news: 85 individuals in the world have more combined wealth than the poorest 3.5 billion.)

A Utah financial advisor editorialized last week that the wealth gap partially results from our tax system in which workers are taxed at a different rate than those who invest in stocks and property. (Dividends and capital gains are taxed at a lower rate than paychecks and interest.) Yes, the easiest way to become wealthy is to have wealthy parents or grandparents. A $10,000 investment in the S&P 500 stock index in 1961 is worth more than $3 million today. Yet a majority of Americans still have minimal or no participation in a company 401k or individual Roth IRA accounts.

Even illegal ways of avoiding taxes favor the wealthy. A tax expert for the Americans for Tax Fairness noted that decreased budgets for the Internal Revenue Service have led to severely reduced audits on the wealthiest 1% whom, he said, fail to report an average of 20% of their income. If they are caught, of course, they are penalized with an additional 75% fee. But there’s a silver lining for rich tax cheats. The penalty is capped at $100,000. As the tax expert wrote, “If you’re trying to avoid $50,000 in tax, the threat of a 75% penalty ($37,500) can be daunting. But if you’re trying to avoid $3 million in tax, that $100,000 penalty is trivial.

There will always be a distinct difference between individual incomes. Education, family structure, geography, work ethic, willingness to accept risk, and even dumb luck will consistently be major factors in income levels, and demonizing entrepreneurs will only stall the economy.

None of you reading this will equal the income of Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet, or Mark Zuckerberg. But one should heed the advice of the Utah financial expert who notes the advantage of investing in property or a solid stock portfolio. Call it “paying yourself first.” Start small and let volatility in the market work to your advantage.

The decline in the middle class is concerning. It is a middle class that separates us from developing countries. But complaining about “not getting ahead” does nothing about solving the problem, and don’t rely on either political party to solve it either. Pretend you are playing chess…It’s your move.

Seek honest and good men and women at election time

n our column two weeks ago, we mentioned the atrocities committed by the Russian soldiers during WWII. When we wrote that column we had no idea Russia was on the verge of invading Ukraine. Like many of you, we’ve been saddened by Putin’s actions, but not stunned.

Putin once said that the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991 was the “greatest geopolitical tragedy of the 20th century.”

While he’s repeatedly claimed to hold Democratic beliefs and has denounced Communism, his actions most certainly have not matched his words. The former KGB agent has ruled Russia like a thug for more than two decades.

As we launch another election cycle, may we take that counsel to heart and do just that. Godspeed to the people of Ukraine. Prayers for them, as well as for those who lead our nation at this time.

Peace Corps still matters after 61 years (Editor’s Note: Nadia Rockwood served in the Peace Corps in the Russian Far East from 2000-2002 and is a resident of Centerville. She currently works as a middle school teacher in Salt Lake City) joined the Peace Corps fresh out of college. I served as a teacher in Russia from 2000-2002 with a cohort of 37 Americans.

I spoke only a few words of Russian: yes, no, goodbye, and vodka. Although my communication skills were lacking, I built positive relationships with the Russian people. They brought me fresh milk and vegetables from their gardens as well as invited me to tea and family celebrations.

The Babuskas worried about me and would check to see if I were dressed warmly by lifting my pant leg and gauging if my layers were thick enough–of course they never were. I was a stranger, yet they took care of me and made me feel like family.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet around 100 of the 240,000 volunteers who have served in Peace Corps’ 61 years of existence. They tell stories of acceptance similar to mine but the locations were in one of the 141 other countries.

District videos feature kids’ voices about ending racism

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—Kids in the Davis School District are sporting pins that say, “No More, Not Here” as part of a campaign aimed at ending racism. The district has also developed a series of videos with students talking about ways to handle hurtful words and actions.

“The genesis of it came out around the first of November when we were hearing conversations asking, ‘What are you doing about the DOJ?’” said Assistant Superintendent John Zurbuchen. “The conversation came about because of the DOJ report but there’s nothing in the agreement that said we had to do this.”

The elementary and secondary directors, the existing equity department and our media folks worked together on how to introduce it to the kids, he said. “It mirrors a video put out by the Utah Jazz a couple of years ago. It’s anti-bias/anti-racism that says ‘I’ll be the one to stop this.’ It’s kids, not a bunch of adults.”

Bianca (Mittendorf), Caray (Long) and Dr. (Bernardo) Villar asked kids what they thought about it and put it in their words, said Zurbuchen. “The theme was Not Here, Not Ever. But that wasn’t true.

It has been well received, said Thompson. “The students are using these skills from kindergarten on up. The teachers are doing a great job giving them the tools and skills to address these issues appropriately.”

Next fall they plan to do something else, she said. “We’ll build upon it. I’m excited that students self edited these. It’s their authentic voices.”

“We have work to do,” said Zurbuchen. “Here’s how we can do it together.” l

Safeguarding Group formed to meet DOJ requirements

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—A Safeguarding Group has been created as part of the Davis School District’s agreement with the Department of Justice following an investigation that found widespread discrimination and racism in the district.

“They’ll be our main consultant,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jackie Thompson. “They’ll be the boots on the ground, working side by side with us as we work with the DOJ. It will benefit the whole district.”

National consultant and trainer Glenn Singleton has 2,000 schools across the country he’s worked with on equality and inclusion, she said. “He works right here in Salt Lake City. He’ll go out into the community and do training with the schools.”

Other members include Kathleen Christy who is a retired equity director from the Salt Lake City School District, Michelle Loveday who teaches K-12 online about black history, Betty Sawyer of the Ogden NAACP, Neelam Chand, Chair of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Commission and Curtis Linton who has a school improvement network that helps with best practices, interviewing and assisting schools.

“It’s a diverse group,” said Thompson.

“We’re fortunate to have local and national representation. They are highly respected. Curtis has put an outstanding team together.”

The group started in January and has approval from the DOJ, she said. “I’m excited to work together. They’ve been working very hard to address policy, procedure, coaching and looking at the culture and community engagement. They’ll work hand in hand with us for the duration of the DOJ agreement.”

Thompson will work directly with the group. “It’s myself, the new Office of Equal Opportunity director, the old equity department and the superintendency,” she said. “We’ll work closely together and meet on a regular basis.”

In addition to the Safeguarding Group, the district recently announced an enhanced partnership between Hill Air Force Base, Davis County commissioners and the state.

Legislative session comes to a close

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com SALT LAKE CITY—It’s almost over. After 45 days of listening to 100s of bills, lawmakers are nearing the finish line. By midnight tonight, the 2022 Utah Legislative Session will be in the books. Throughout the week legislators scrambled to get their bills heard and some watched their bills die. Even those that did pass could be vetoed by the Governor. When the dust has settled, Utahns will see what their legislators have done for the state whether good or bad.

“We’re at a weird point in the session,” said Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross on Wednesday. “A bill has to be voted on in the House and Senate in order to pass. In the last few days any bill that didn’t pass through both is dead.”

So any bill that passed in the House needs to be heard in the Senate and any bill that passed in the Senate needs to be heard in the House, he said.

“Now I’m focused on my Senate bills.

I’m also the floor sponsor on a number of House bills that come to the Senate.

The House sends over a list of bills in this order. When they pop up I have two minutes to talk about the bill.”

There were 100 House bills that died and a few less in the Senate that died, Weiler said. “A lot of big issue bills have died. I call them bad teacher bills. One was if a teacher said something inappropriate in class they could lose their license and the other was that a teacher has to post their syllabi online.”

The voucher bill or hope scholarship died, he said. “But the Governor

had already said he would veto it.”

Weiler said two big issue bills were still being considered, HB60 vaccine passport and HB11 transgender sports. “The House passed a modified version (of HB11) so it has to go back to the Senate to accept or reject.”

On Tuesday, things got out of hand during a committee hearing on HB60.

“Three people were removed for not following the rules,” said Weiler. “The committee amended the bill and took out about two thirds of it.”

The bill says an employer can’t require other employees to show proof of vaccination, he said. “It also says that an employer can’t say, ‘hey if you get vaccinated and show us proof we’ll give you $100.’ That would be negative for those who don’t do it. We call those incentives.”

Weiler said he was surprised that the voucher bill failed by such a wide margin. “It got 38 votes against and 25 votes for. It went down in flames.”

HB11 has also been controversial.

“I voted ‘no’ in committee,” he said.

“It’s hard to please everyone. It sets up a committee that for a transgender athlete to compete they have to submit personal information to the committee like their wingspan, height, weight, etc. It forces these children to disclose health information. They shouldn’t be treated like cattle.”

The devil is in the details, Weiler said. “Some people think it will end female sports. But they did it in Idaho and the federal courts got involved. If we pass it here the federal courts could enjoin that law and we wouldn’t have any control at all.”

There needs to be some middle ground, he said. “I’m in favor of letting

a student choose what information they feel comfortable sharing with the committee. If the transgender community doesn’t get everything they want and the community doesn’t get everything they want then both turn on you.”

Weiler said he hasn’t received a single email in favor of the bill. “I’ve received hundreds against it. They’re

not all in my district but I get emails on issues from all over the state, sometimes all over the country.”

The session will end by midnight March 4. “Last year we finished early,” he said. “I think we will end early this year. We’ve been really efficient.” l

Cub Scout pack celebrates 75th anniversary in Bountiful

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—Cub Scout Pack 3220 in Bountiful had a reason to celebrate during its Blue and Gold Banquette on Feb. 22 – its 75th anniversary. The pack, chartered out of Bountiful Community Church, might be the oldest continuous running pack in Utah.

“The banquette is very traditional, something we hold every year,” said Jacob VanderToolen, Cub Master of the pack. “The actual anniversary of Boy Scouts of America was Feb. 9, it started in 1910, so it’s a special time of year for Scouting.”

He said the pack has had more than a thousand Cubs go through in its existence, and there are 34 Scouts in the pack this year. Most everyone

is from south Davis County, though they’ve had Cubs in the past from Murray and Roy. Cub Scouts have different age groups within the pack – Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos 1 and 2. The pack is associated with Boy Scout Troop 220, which met at the BCC for years but now meets at the Elks Lodge in Bountiful.

VanderToolen said the banquette included a chili cookoff competition with 14 entries competing for the Silver Spoon award, decorations, other awards, and Cubs were given new class B uniforms as celebration of the 75 year anniversary.

The pack will work with Troop 220 to help with serving and cleanup at the annual Spaghetti dinner set for March 12 at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Bountiful. l

Viewmont High wind ensemble premiers new piece at UMEA conference

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—Only two bands were selected to play at this year’s Utah Music Educators Association conference held in St. George on Feb. 5 – Viewmont was one of them. The band also premiered “unBroken,” a piece played

for the first time in Utah and by only a couple of groups in the nation.

“It was really a good event to be a part of,” said Viewmont Band Director Dan Chaston. “The kids did a great job.”

The conference is open to any music performing group in the state, he said.

“They only select a small few and only two bands to play every year. We record

ourselves playing the music we’ve been working on and submit that. The students were playing really, really well and we were selected this time.”

Chaston said when he received the email that they had been chosen to play his heart started racing. “It was a bit of a rush. I’m proud of the students who made the recording. It’s sad that many of them were seniors and didn’t get to perform. I was nervous because we graduated a lot of really fine seniors but all of the students rose to the occasion to make it a really special event.”

For several years, Viewmont has commissioned composers to write brand new music, he said. “When we were selected to perform I reached out to a couple composers. I thought it would be fun to do a world premier but my biggest concern was a tight timeline. We only had three months to start working on it.”

Chaston said while talking to composer Randall Standridge, he told him he had another piece. “I’d seen posts about it (unBroken) on social media. He sent me the music and I listened to it and read the story behind it then read it again three or four times. It had me drawn in right from the beginning and I felt it was something I needed to do.”

“unBroken” speaks to Standridge’s battle with mental illness, Chaston said.

“Some of my students have struggled with mental illness and personally I have struggled myself. After I read Randall’s story and listened to the piece I thought if it could reach me how much could it help my students and in turn reach out to the audience and touch them as well.”

“We received a standing ovation,” said Emeline Howell who plays the clarinet in the band. “It was absolutely superb. We played the songs for months before we were ready to perform.” “unBroken” is such a touching song, so emotional, she said. “It was an absolute honor to play something that has so much weight and meaning behind it.”

It was really fun to be in St. George, Howell said. “I love meeting new people and love being in a band that can play.

We’re all on the same page striving for the same goal that you could never do on your own and couldn’t do unless everybody is all in.”

Mr. Chaston picked songs we had a connection to, she said. “We couldn’t have done ‘unBroken’ without him, he absolutely made that piece. I’m so lucky to be in his band.”l

Miss Teen Utah finds passion through service

LAYTON—Emily Graf got into pageants when she was shopping for a dress for a friend’s birthday party and met Mrs. Utah who encouraged her to do a photo shoot. Now the reigning United States of America Teen Utah 2022 is using her crown to help others find their passion through service.

“My platform is ‘What a difference a year makes,’” said the Layton High junior. “I want to help teens find what resonates best with them.”

Graf said she decided to do pageants because they are so focused on empowering women. “I wanted to do that for myself. It’s been an incredible experience.”

She was named Miss Teen Davis County in 2021. On Nov. 14, 2021 she won the state title and recently competed in the national contest in Nevada for United States of America’s Teen where she won the award

for Miss Congeniality.

“It was interesting meeting the other girls from all across the country,” Graf said. “Their platforms are incredible and it was fun learning about them and the unique interests they have.”

The national competition was four days long, she said. “It was divided over those days with registration, interview, patriotic wear prelims and gown prelims. We also talked about ourselves and our platform.”

At the state pageant there were similar categories. “We practiced our interviewing skills and showed our confidence on stage so the judges could get a feel for who you are,” said Graf. “There was also an onstage question. Mine was ‘There are a lot of pageant critics, how would you convince them to become pageant fans?’”

Graf has also been involved in Girl Scouts since kindergarten. “I think that’s why service has been a part of my life so I decided to make

it my platform,” she said. “We do a service project each month. I hope I can inspire my fellow teens to find their passion through service.”

In December, Graf helped gather 200 pairs of socks to donate to the Road Home. “We also put together 50 birthday bags for the district to use at the teen centers that included gift cards to places they might like to go and made 50 trauma kits to donate to the Provo Police Department.”

The 4.0 student is in the Honor Society, sews, plays the piano and is a ballroom dancer. “I’d like to be a history professor,” she said about future plans. “I love learning about it and want to share it with others. I want to know where we came from and how it can affect where we’re going.”

Graf doesn’t know yet if she’ll continue competing later on. “It could be fun,” she said. “The pageant community is so kind and full of inspiring women. I’ll just see where my pageant journey takes me.” l

Executive Appropriation Committee makes final recommendations on state budget SALT LAKE CITY—As the 2022 legislative session winds down, the full legislature was expected to consider the Executive Appropriation Committee’s (EAC) final recommendations for the fiscal year 2022-23 budget.

Recommendations include record-level funding for education and social services, a significant tax cut for the second year in a row and a generational opportunity to fund water and infrastructure, according to a release.

“Strategic and prudent planning is the Utah way,” said Senate President J. Stuart Adams in the statement. “Our frugal budgeting paved the way for our state to cut taxes for the second year in a row and fund priority budget items like education, infrastructure, water conservation SPEAKER BRAD WILSON looks through notes during floor time in the House. and social service programs at substantial levels. Not only are we funding these items, but we are also saving money to ensure our children and grandchildren have the same or better quality of life than we enjoy.”

The Legislature increased the education budget by $383 million in ongoing revenue in fiscal year 2023. That is a 9 percent increase, the release said.

“Getting the greatest return for every taxpayer dollar is always our goal and never an easy endeavor,” Speaker Brad Wilson said. “From the beginning of the session we set out to address our most significant challenges and craft a budget that not only meets state needs today but addresses our long-term challenges.”

The EAC budget recommendations also include $350 million to address the state’s water conservation efforts, $21 million to expand broadband access and $38 million for improved access to outdoor recreation and state parks.

Every third Saturday of the month, the Christian Life Center Church in Layton holds a food distribution for anyone in the community to come and pick up food for their families. Last week it was on the fourth Saturday and Anna Pro and her daughter Leta stopped by to pick up food and take it to the Lantern House shelter in Ogden.

“Leta is in the Honor Society at Layton High and she is required to do community service projects,” said Pro. “We showed up around 2:30 and the long line went pretty fast.”

Pro said while people were waiting a mom and her son were stopping by the cars and offering a prayer for anybody who needed one.

“The first name I heard in my head was Finley, our not so healthy Betta fish. It was a wonderful lil' prayer. We left with a trunk full of food, enough for three families.”

I have cooked and eaten traditional chili my whole life, but this – Cincinnati Chili – is a whole different meal. This chili uses an unusual blend of spices that includes cinnamon, chocolate and allspice. A dear friend from back east introduced me to this meal and it is yummy. It is so easy to make, that I have added it to my 30 meal food storage.

The difference is how the meat is cooked – you do NOT brown it. There are many recipes on how to make a Cincinnati chili from scratch, but using the package of seasoning mix (which I ordered online) made it in a snap! Sometimes we need a quick go to that is different from traditional chili or spaghetti. Put it on pasta noodles, hot dogs, or even spiralized zucchini noodles. It is time to bring a little east out west and develop a new tradition. Give it a try!

Farm production in Utah, nation up from 2020

A

griculture remains a vital part of Utah industry, including here in Davis County. So information provided by both the state’s Department of Agriculture and Food, and the United States Department of Agriculture, is important to farmers and ranchers.

Right now, local ranchers are being made aware of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which poses a threat to poultry, backyard hobby flocks and in rare cases human health. State Veterinarian Dr. Dean Taylor said no cases have been reported in Utah, though it has infected poultry and backyard flocks in Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, Maine, Delaware, New York and Michigan. He said “care should be used in handling poultry or wildlife.”

Indicators of HPAI in avian flocks are incidents of high death loss among flocks, nasal discharge, decreased appetite or water consumption, and lack of coordination in birds. If birds are experiencing any of these symptoms, it should be reported to Taylor at djtaylor@utah. gov.

Avian influenza is frequently spread through migratory waterfowl, and these birds often do not show any symptoms. The most effective means to control this disease is to practice good biosecurity at both large com-

mercial facilities and in-home flocks of poultry. Greater risk exists when waterfowl are in close proximity to domestic fowl.

In its monthly report for February, the USDA said topsoil moisture has risen compared to the same time in 2021 – up about 13 percent in the “adequate” category.

About 2 percent of the state’s topsoils are considered “very short” and 35 percent “short.” There were none in the “surplus” category. Subsoil moisture was also in the short or adequate range – 98 percent. As of the Feb. 18 report, snowpack in Utah was 83 percent of the median snowfall average. That didn’t count recent storms the last week of the month.

There was also a report on farming in Utah. At the end of 2021, there were 17,900 farms and ranches in Utah, up 100 from the year before. They accounted for 10.7 million acres. The average size farm was 598 acres, down from 601 in 2020.

Chicken and eggs remained a big farming business in Utah. There were 5.68 million layers last year, 21 percent more than in 2020. The average layer provided 306 eggs for a total of 1.74 billion eggs from Utah layers – 20 percent higher than in 2020. And the average value per bird was $2.70 last year – up from $2.40 in 2020.

Nationwide last year, chickens laid a total of 111 billion eggs.

One more fun fact from farming in 2021. Nationwide, commercial red meat production totaled 4.56

Six tips to help get you saving money

ach year at the end of February, the state and nation hold “Saves Weeks.”

It’s been a tradition since 2007. Even though it’s now March, Amanda H. Christensen, associate professor at the Utah State University extension, has some tips to help people get in the habit of saving money.

First, she said, is to “save automatically. This is the secret sauce to financial success. Automatically having your money direct-deposited from your paycheck into a savings account increases your chances of saving by 100%. And if the money is out of sight and out of mind, you are less likely to withdraw it for random purchases.”

She suggests everyone should save for an unexpected opportunity – whether for an emergency or just the chance to purchase something you really want. It’s never too late to start saving for retirement.

“We spend most of our lives working in order to pay for our house, food, cars, entertainment, etc., but putting yourself

first and saving money for your future is also a wise move,” Christensen said. “One way to do this is to set up your retirement contribution so it is a certain percentage of your income. That way, as your income increases, so does the amount you contribute to retirement, all without you even noticing.”

She said you can save by reducing your debt. Paying down debt frees up money that you were probably paying in interest for credit cards or loans.

You can also make saving a family affair – talk to kids about money and teach them ways to make good financial decisions. Setting a family goal to save for something fun can be fun in itself, and have a lasting impact on your kids.

Another suggestion from Christensen is to make education savings a priority.

“You can do it simply by investing in a college savings plan like the my529 in Utah,” she said.

“Funds can help pay for qualified education expenses like tuition, books, computers, and other supplies for traditional and technical colleges. Savings can also be used for K-12 tuition expenses, appren-

ALEX BOYE BRINGS HIS MUSIC TO CATALYST CENTER Students at the Davis Catalyst Center got to rub shoulders last week with international recording artist Alex Boye as he recorded his latest song there.

“This is mind-blowing to me,” said Davis Catalyst Center student April, who is a fan of Boye and dreams of producing music.

“I haven’t had that many opportunities in my life and I’ve never considered myself one of the cool kids,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting this at all.”

The magnet school in Kaysville is specially designed to partner Davis School District students with industry mentors and businesses.

For two days, Boye and music producer KC Knight relied on DCC audio production students for a cover of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from the movie, Encanto.

“I had this idea of bringing this very, very, extremely popular song that every kid on the planet knows right now and putting it through the Catalyst machine,” Boye said.

“It’s coming out really good. I’m really, really excited.”

Boye also plans to use DCC students to create a music video for the song.

‘THE BATMAN’ AN EPIC WORTHY OF THE ICONIC CHARACTER

W

hen Robert Pattinson was first cast as Batman, there was a lot of outrage. Many thought he would ruin the experience for those who knew Batman well, creating a movie only casual fans could appreciate.

The results however, are exactly the opposite.

A dark, sprawling epic that clocks in at just shy of three hours, ‘The Batman’ is too much to take in if you don’t already love the character. If you do, however, it’s an immersive, richly detailed story with a solid respect for the comics and the most emotionally nuanced Batman we’ve ever seen in a movie. It’s still long, but it sucks you in so thoroughly you might not even notice.

Opening this weekend, the movie shows us a Batman who has only been fighting crime for a few years. He

leans heavily into being a figure of fear and mystery, but the crime in Gotham is getting worse no matter what he does. When an equally mysterious figure calling himself the Riddler starts killing corrupt officials, Batman and Detective Gordon must work together to stop him before the city falls apart.

In addition to Gordon and the Riddler, we also spend time with Selena Kyle (aka Catwoman), Oz Cobblepot (aka the Penguin), and mob boss Carmine Falcone. While nonfans may feel like this is too much (my designated casual fan felt like “The Batman” was at least two movies stuffed together), it leads to a Gotham that feels more fully realized than ever before. Here, like in the comics, the city isn’t just a backdrop. It’s an entire dark, magnificently gothic world.

The characters that populate that world feel more alive than ever. Zoe Kravitz as Kyle and Jeffrey Wright as Gordon are particularly inspired

casting choices, bringing a world-weary grace that matches their respective tones perfectly. I love Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic Catwoman performance with all my heart, but Kravitz’s version of the character felt like she stepped out of the comic books.

Wright as Gordon exemplifies everything that’s best about the character, who here is more of a true partner to Batman than the hapless sidekick he’s sometimes reduced to.

The best casting of all, surprisingly, is Pattinson himself. Though some have called him ‘emo Batman,’ those familiar with the character know that the best versions are at least a little bit emo. Pattinson’s Batman is also desperately trying to save the city, cares deeply about Alfred even though he has trouble admitting it, and can grow and change when he realizes what needs to be done. He relies more on actual detective skills, and the help of others, than the usual complicated

collection of Bat-toys. He’s awkward, depressed, and isolated, but his heart is always in the right place.

He’s also got a wonderful connection to Kravitz’s Kyle. They’re electric together onscreen, and underneath is a quiet tenderness that comes from the fact that they both recognize each other as strays. I was invested every moment they were together, and I would love to see their relationship develop over future movies.

In fact, I want to see as much of this Batman as I can get. His world may be dark, but there’s so much here worth coming back for.

Davis moves to second round in 6A; Bountiful, Viewmont battle for semifinal spot

Fourth-seeded Davis had a first round bye in the 6A state tournament before facing Copper Hills in the second round Feb. 24. The Darts defeated the Grizzlies 56-47, putting up 18 points in the first quarter – to Copper Hills’ four points – and led by eight at halftime with the teams playing evenly in the second half.

“Playing in the state tournament always brings a bunch of excitement and pressure to perform,” said head coach Anne Jones. “We were red hot in the first quarter – with Sierra Passey getting us started with the first eight points of the game, then the very talented Copper Hills team made a run in the second. We were able to hold them off for the third and a close fourth quarter with some tough defense.

Passey ended up with 15 points to lead Davis. Jones also noted Kylee Mabry, who scored 14 points, and Makayla Patterson’s 10 for their play on both sides of the ball.

“Kendra Kitchen held down the middle for us and Taylor Leavitt played some really great defense against their best player,” Jones said.

“Morgan Burnett and Kate Richards played some big minutes off the bench.”

The Darts faced Westlake in the second round on March 1 (after our press deadline).

“We are thrilled by heading to the U of U Tuesday and will have to play our very best against a big and talented team,” said Jones.

Farmington

Farmington defeated West 49-27 in the first round of the 6A state tournament Feb. 22. The Phoenix squad started strong, going up 13-2 early and cruising to the win.

Delaney Baker led the Phoenix with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Phoenix outreached the Panthers 49-27, moving on to the second round of the 6A state playoffs but losing to Riverton 56-42.

Head coach Van Price also noted the contributions of Whitney Avei who had nine points, four steals and three assists “to help lead us to the win.”

In the second round Feb. 24, Farmington lost to fourth-seeded Riverton 56-42.

The Phoenix squad found themselves down from the get-go and had a 14-point deficit at the break, which ended up being the deciding margin.

“We played very hard and never quit, but we didn’t shoot well enough to win,” said Price. “We struggled from the free throw line as well, making just nine-of-19.”

Baker’s 14 points were tops for Farmington with Talin Stimpson putting in 10 more.

The Phoenix ended the season with an 11-11 mark.

“I loved coaching this team,” Price said. “They worked so hard and gave everything they had. I thought they did well for a team that only

had one returning experienced player from last year – it definitely wasn’t easy replacing six seniors from a year ago, four of which were starters and then filling in with new players that didn’t have any varsity experience. I’ll miss those that graduate this year, but hopefully we can build

on what we accomplished this year and be that much better next year.”

The Redhawks came out strong, going up 30-11 at the break and scoring 23 points in the third quarter to put the game even more out of reach.

Viewmont

Viewmont defeated Brighton 6546 in the first round of the 5A state playoffs Feb. 22. The Vikings went up 32-16 in the first half and continued the strong offense with 36 more points the rest of the way.

“We won by playing great defense,” said head coach Roger Farnsworth.

Three players scored in double figures for Viewmont, led by Grace MacKay with 21 points, Kristina Gunnell with 14 and Emma Mulitalo with 10.

Against Skyline Feb. 24, the Vikings won 57-41. They were down 12-5 early before outscoring the Eagles 34 to 12 over the next two quarters to pull away.

“We played great defense,” Farnsworth said. “I’m so proud of how hard we work every day.”

Gunnell led the way with 19 points while Kalee Smith added 14 and Mulitalo 10.

Woods Cross beat Cottonwood 40-29 in the first round of the 5A state tournament Feb. 22. The Wildcats blanked the Colts in the first quarter – while going up nine – and continued to pull away in the win.

“They made a couple of adjustments and some of their other girls stepped up to help. They have a couple really good players that we put a focus on and we executed our plan about as well as we could have.”

Georgia Hatton led Woods Cross with 14 points while Sofia Mokofisi nearly recorded a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds.

“I was really proud of the girls and the effort they put in to playing their roles for this game,” Simon said. “Credit to our whole team with their effort defensively because it was a team effort to do what we did.”

Against top-seeded Lehi in the second round Feb. 24, the Wildcats lost 47-30. Woods Cross managed just six points in the first half and were down by 19 before outscoring the Pioneers 24 to 22 to end the game.

“I was really proud of our team and the way they competed the entire game,” said Simon. “We got off to slow start, which is tough when you are playing the number one team in the state. They are a really good team. Our girls came out in the second half and gave us a chance to get back into the game. We defended hard and started making a few shots to cut into the lead, but in the end it wasn’t enough.”

Hatton was the top scorer for the Wildcats with nine points.

The Wildcats ended their year with a 13-10 record.

“It was a great season with a bunch of great girls that played well together and did everything we asked them to do.”l

Our Male Athlete of the Week is Mason Bendinger, Woods Cross basketball. He scored 72 points in three big wins for the Wildcats at the state 5A basketball tournament.

Davis suffers big upset in state boys basketball playoffs

here will be a new Class 6A boys basketball champion this year.

Davis’ bid to repeat as 6A titleholders came to a surprising early end. The Darts fell in the second round to fellow Region 1 foe Syracuse, 48-42 on Feb. 25. The shocking loss ended Davis’ season with a record of 22-2.

The Darts entered the state tournament with the No. 2 seed in 6A. They had also already dispatched Syracuse twice by double digits during the regular season: 45-34 on Feb. 8 and 63-50 on Jan. 20.

It was a much different game this time around.

Playing at home, Davis got off to one of its typical great starts, leading 12-1 after one quarter. A rough second quarter saw the Darts score just three points, as Syracuse cut the Davis lead to 15-10 at halftime. An 11-10 third quarter advantage for Davis left it up 26-20 entering the final period in the low-scoring affair. That’s when Syracuse went off for 28 points in the final six minutes, outscoring Davis by 12.

Syracuse pulled the upset despite making just 9–27 field goals. However, Davis shot only 37% percent from the field. The biggest disparity was from the foul line where Syracuse made an eye-opening 29 of its 32 shots. Davis was perfect from the line but had only six attempts. Rex Sunderland had 15 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals for Davis. Sawyer Cottrell added 10 points. Davis made eight three-pointers to only one for Syracuse.

But the difference at the foul line was too much to overcome.

Davis’ unexpected early playoff exit was a tough one for the seniors especially. Eight Dart players will graduate and have played their final games in a Davis uniform. This includes Sunderland, Cottrell, Colby Sims, Tate Garff, Maxwell Painter, and Henry Ihrig.

Farmington

After a first-round blowout win over Roy, Farmington’s season came to an end with a 85-75 loss to Cyprus, the No. 5 seed and champions from Region 2. Farmington had a 14-10 record this season.

Against Cyprus, the Phoenix found

themselves in a big hole early and couldn’t ever climb out. Cyprus was up 24-12 after one quarter and 46-38 at halftime in a high-scoring first 12 minutes.

The Pirates increased the advantage to 65-46 heading into the final quarter.

Farmington outscored Cyprus 29-20 in the final six minutes but it wasn’t enough to move on in the playoffs.

Collin Chandler had 23 points to lead the Phoenix, while Paul Battie added 17 points. Ben Stucki had 14, and Devin Day contributed 12 points.

Woods Cross

In the 5A ranks, Woods Cross is heading to the University of Utah for the semifinals.

The Wildcats, the seventh seed, faced sixth-seeded Murray on March 2, after our press deadline. The winner would move on to the championship at Brigham Young University on Friday to face either Bonneville or top-seeded Olympus.

Last week was a successful one for the Wildcats. Woods Cross outlasted Region 5 rival Bountiful 50-45 on Feb. 23 in the first round. This preceded a 59-53 thrilling win in overtime against another 5A team, Box Elder, on Feb. 25.

Mason Bendinger led the way against Bountiful with 23 points and three assists. Zach Delange had 11 points in the win. In the second-round victory over Box Elder, the Wildcats went on a 9-3 run in overtime following a 50-50 score at the end of regulation.

Jaxon Smith had a game-high 24 points.

Bendinger had a great all-around game with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

The two wins advanced Woods Cross to the quarterfinals, where it prevailed over Region 8’s Orem by the count of 75-54. Woods Cross was up just 33-30 at halftime but had a huge 42-24 second half in the rout. The Wildcats shot a blistering 26-41 from the field and got 34 points and six rebounds from Bendinger. Smith contributed 19 points and four rebounds.

Viewmont

The Vikings finished the year with a 10-14 record following a first-round loss to Timpview, 70-55. The Vikings gave up 28 points in the first quarter and trailed by 12. Viewmont could never catch up.

Radek Pulsipher had 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in

the defeat. Zach Robison had 14 points and four rebounds.

Bountiful

The Redhawks gave the Wildcats all they could handle in the first-round matchup. In the end, the effort wasn’t enough as Bountiful concludes the

2021–2022 campaign with a 7-16 mark.

The score was tied at 36 apiece entering the fourth quarter. That’s when the Wildcats outscored the Redhawks 14-9. Trevin Ostler had 16 points to lead Bountiful. Carson Smith added 12. l

Farmington Bay a great place to watch swan migration

O

ne of the true beauties of spring is watching wildlife return to the habitats in and around the Great Salt Lake. Wild swans are currently winging their way through the state, and you can see some close to home.

One such place is the Division of Wildlife Resources’ Eccles Wildlife Education Center that is part of the Farmington Bay Waterfoul Management Area. The center features two tundra swan mounts and other displays about wetlands in the area.

The WMA is closed to vehicle traffic from March 1 until September, but the education center – located at 1157 S. Waterfowl Way in Farmington – is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Both tundra swans and trumpeter swans stop in Utah's wetlands for some much-needed rest and refueling during their annual spring migration. The migration takes the swans from wintering grounds in California to nesting sites in Canada and Alaska.

“Swans are graceful, beautiful birds,” said Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Regional Outreach Manager Mark Hadley. “And you’ll have no problem spotting them: they’re huge and almost pure white in

Q: Is Danny DeVito really as short as he is portrayed, or is it some sort of camera trick?

A: Four-foot-10 star Danny DeVito comes by his height naturally — no special effects required. But you’re right that it’s more than a matter of him just being short.

He was born with Fairbank’s disease, known medically as multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, a genetic condition that

affects bone growth.

He says that his height undoubtedly affected his career trajectory in Hollywood — that, essentially, some roles go to the short guy, and other ones just don’t.

“Size matters,” he told the Irish Times in 2020. “You could be a very imposing character and walk into a room and the people will back away. On the other hand, you may look like an easy mark, but … those things matter.”

Fortunately for him, he said, his stature suited his other talents.

Despite getting a classical education from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he never wanted to be the leading man. Simply put, he enjoyed making people laugh.

“I got one thing from my sister — God rest her soul — Angie,” DeVito said. “She

From the creative mind of Tina Fey (“Saturday Night Live”), “Mr. Mayor” follows Neil Bremer (Ted Danson, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”), a retired successful businessman who runs for mayor, wins, and then has to learn how to be a mayor while on the job. Despite being inspired to run for office by many “wrong” reasons, those same reasons have now become the very thing that might make for an effective term.

Season 2 of “Mr. Mayor” premieres Monday, March 14, on NBC. Season 1 showed audiences that it isn’t easy for Bremer to rectify morals and ethics in the political realm — somewhere “everybody knows your name” — while working on his relationship with his teenage daughter, but hopefully Season 2 will show Bremer the fruits of his labor.

While those who caught the above reference to “Cheers” will already be acquainted with Ted Danson, youngergeneration viewers may be less familiar with the actor.

One of the biggest television and film stars of the ‘80s, Danson is most recently recognizable as Michael from “The Good Place.” But no matter where TV fans know him from, Danson is well known; something that can be attributed to his long and healthy on-screen career.

Before playing Sam Malone in “Cheers,” he was Ian Campbell in 1979’s “The Onion Field,” Maj. Collings in “The Amazing Spider-Man” and Injured Man on a Stretcher in “Trapper John, M.D.” Though 12 years of bit TV roles, made-for-TV movies and films helped put him in the spotlight, none of them catapulted Danson to fame the way “Cheers” eventually did.

When Danson retired Malone in 1993, he quickly jumped into other projects, including a one-off season of “Ink” in 1996, a turn as Lemuel Gulliver in “Gulliver’s Travels,” and another as Washington Bellamy in “Pontiac Moon” (1994).

Be aware of COVID-19 scam efforts

here are reports of scammers trying to use the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to defraud the public. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are individuals using testing sites, telemarketing calls, text messages, social media platforms, and door-to-door visits to perpetrate COVID19-related scams.

“We regularly publish case counts and disseminate helpful information regarding testing locations and reporting procedures,” said Charla Haley, public information officer with the Utah Department of Health. “We urge all Utah citizens to use wisdom and be cautious about any response to COVID-19 that they question.”

Medicare recipients are a highly vulnerable population, according to the HHS office. Scammers are asking for personal information that should never be disclosed and will never be sought for by

legitimate health officials. Here are some of the suggestions that Health and Human Services recommend: • Be cautious of any COVID-19 testing site that requires your financial or medical information in order to receive a free test.

• Be mindful of advertisements for COVID-19 testing or treatments on social media platforms. If you make an appointment for a COVID-19 test online, make sure the location is an approved testing site. We encourage the public to check official government websites for a list of approved COVID-19 testing sites.

• Be aware that scammers are selling fake and unauthorized at-home COVID-19 test kits in exchange for your personal or medical information.

Make sure to purchase FDA approved COVID-19 test kits from legitimate providers.

• Offers to purchase COVID-19 vaccination cards are scams. Valid proof of COVID-19 vaccination can only be provided to individuals by legitimate providers administering vaccines.

LEGITIMATE TESTING SITES and those where the COVID-19 vaccine is available are well publicized in Utah.

• Photos of COVID-19 vaccination cards should not be shared on social media. Posting content that includes your date of birth, health care details or other personally identifiable information can be used to steal your identity.

• As volunteers go door-to-door to inform communities across the country about COVID-19 vaccines, be sure to protect yourself from criminals who are seeking to commit fraud. Do not provide personal, medical, or financial details to anyone in exchange for vaccine information, and obtain vaccinations from trusted providers.

• Be cautious of COVID-19 survey scams. Do not give your personal, medical, or financial information to anyone claiming to offer money or gifts in exchange for your participation in a COVID-19 vaccine survey.

• Be mindful of how you dispose of COVID-19 materials such as syringes, vials, vial container boxes, vaccination record cards, and shipment or tracking records. Improper disposal of these items could be used by bad actors to commit fraud.

• Beneficiaries should be cautious of unsolicited requests for their personal, medical, and financial information. Medicare will not call beneficiaries to offer COVID-19 related products, services, or benefit review.

• Be suspicious of any unexpected calls or visitors offering COVID-19 tests or supplies. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately.

• Do not respond to, or open links in, text messages about COVID-19 from unknown individuals.

• Do not give your personal or financial information to anyone claiming to

offer HHS grants related to COVID-19.

• Be aware of scammers pretending to be COVID-19 contact tracers. Legitimate contact tracers will never ask for your medical or financial information or attempt to set up a COVID-19 test.

• If you suspect COVID-19 health care fraud, report it immediately online or call 800-HHS-TIPS (800-447-8477).

• Scammers are using social media to perpetrate COVID-19-related scams. In one major scheme, fraudsters hack social media accounts and send direct messages to beneficiaries while posing as a friend or government employee. The impersonator claims the person is eligible for government grants (citing various reasons like COVID-19, disability, etc.) and urges them to call a phone number to collect the funds. Upon calling, the beneficiary is asked to pay a "processing fee" (using bank account information, gift cards, bitcoin) to receive the grant money. In return, targets of this scam never receive any money, but often large sums of their money are stolen from them. These alleged grants are entirely illegitimate.

• Fraudsters are also continuing to offer COVID-19 tests to Medicare beneficiaries in exchange for personal details, including Medicare information.

However, the services are unapproved and illegitimate.

• In another fraud scheme, some medical labs are targeting retirement communities claiming to offer COVID-19 tests, but they are actually drawing blood and billing federal health care programs for medically unnecessary services. l

Key indicators point to a mixed economy

I

s the economy thriving or struggling? The answer will vary widely, depending on who you ask. In the mind of the average American, the U.S. economy is not doing well.

Consumer sentiment hit a 10-year low in February, down a stunning 19.7% from February 2021, as measured by the University of Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment.

However, other economic data paint a different picture. While inflation and the labor shortage continue to cause serious pain points for consumers and the economy, key indicators point to a strong economy. Much like how a physician considers various physical markers to determine a person’s overall health, economists look at some of the following indicators to assess how the economy is doing: Economic Growth. The broadest measure of our economy, gross domestic product, shows that economic growth is robust. GDP, the sum of all goods and services produced in the economy, grew by 7% in the fourth quarter of 2021 to a value of $24 trillion. This is far above pre-pandemic levels and nearly back to the long-term trendline, had the pandemic never happened and it had continued its historic growth pattern.

Job Creation. At both the state and national levels, the labor market continues to grow and add back jobs lost during the pandemic. Utah continues to outpace the rest of the nation in job creation as one of only four states that has added jobs during the pandemic.

Unemployment. The national unemployment rate is now around 4%, down from a pandemic high of 15%. Meanwhile, Utah’s unemployment rate of 1.9% is at its lowest in state history and is the second lowest in the nation, just behind Nebraska. The downside of this low unemployment is that labor shortages are even more dramatic in our state.

Labor Force Participation. The U.S. labor force participation rate – an estimate of the economy’s active workforce – ticked up to 62.2% at the beginning of this year. While still below the pre-pandemic rate of around 63%, the labor force participation rate is trending in the right direction as more people return to work.

Wage Growth. As a result of the tight labor market, wage growth continues to accelerate and is around 6%. While wages are growing much faster than the annual average of 2.7% over the past 15 years, wage growth is not keeping up with soaring price increases.

Inflation. The inflation rate is the highest the nation’s seen since the 1980s. In the Mountain West, consumer prices are growing even faster, surging 9% on an annual basis in January, compared to 7.5% nationally. Analysts are estimating that this price growth will peak in the next few months, but continued pressure from supply chain disruptions and international turmoil threatens to keep inflation higher for a longer period of time.

Interest Rates. The Federal Reserve has kept interest rates low to help stimulate the economy through the pandemic. Now in response to continued inflation, markets expect the Federal Reserve will increase rates as much as 2% over the next year. While this may be unwelcome news for potential homebuyers and loan applicants, the Fed must act aggressively to bring down price increases.

The disconnect between economic data and consumer perceptions of the economy is actually consistent with a strong economy.

The struggle today is not that the economy is not growing enough, instead, it is a sign of an economy growing so strongly that it is now overheating. Just like a pot of water on a stove, the economy is boiling over. The challenge for the Fed is to figure out how to turn down the heat without cooling the economy too much. l

OBITUARIES Bert Edwin Cadwalader May 8, 1929 – Feb. 26, 2022

Bert Edwin Cadwalader, 92, passed away Feb. 26, 2022, with his dedicated caregiver and great-granddaughter, Alisha Jo Sellers (his girl) by his side.

Born May 8, 1929, in Grand Island, Nebraska, to Walter Edward and Daisy Ethel Cadwalader, he was the sixth of 10 children. He grew up in Nebraska.

Bert married his sweetheart, Mary Allie Brandt, Sept. 7, 1951. Together they were blessed with three children. She preceded him in death April 30, 2015.

He served a 20-year career in the United States Air Force, where he retired in 1967. He was an accomplished automotive mechanic throughout his lifetime and a devoted crossing guard for many years. Bert deeply loved his church community. He was a devoted member of Grace Baptist Church where he helped build the church.

Bert was a big tease, known for his fun-loving good nature. He was fiercely independent and always willing to help everyone in any way he could. He was deeply devoted to his wife and his grandchildren. He was “Grandfather Extraordinaire” to Jamie Jo, Holly, Keith, and Kyle. He was affectionately called Grandpa by many, including Roberta Ivankovich and her children; Stan (Connie) Payne and their children Jamey, Brian and Misty Payne; dozens of Jamie and Alisha’s friends, and just about anyone who met him.

His memory will be cherished by his children, Edwin Bert Cadwalader (Emma Jo) and Linda Kay Croxford (Kirk); grandchildren, Jamie Jo Cadwalader; Holly Johnson (Jeremy),

OBITUARIES Robert Michael Darger April 3, 1986, ~ Feb. 23, 2022

The world has lost one of its genuinely special people. Early in the morning of Feb. 23, 2022, Rob unexpectedly passed away in a Davis County hospital from a sudden illness.

Rob was born in Bountiful, Utah, grew up in Fruit Heights, Utah, and resided in Layton, Utah. He graduated from Davis High School and attended Weber State University. During his short 35 years, he was a father, husband, son, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend to many. He was a great intellect with infinite curiosity and extraordinary analytical ability, always thinking deeply and sharing the mysteries of life and the nuances of reality with others.

However, the simplest pleasures are what brought the most joy to Rob. He loved spending time with his family, especially his two sons, teaching, reading, hiking, or just playing with them and their toys. He took great delight in watching them grow and learn. He was extraordinarily sensitive to the moods and feelings of those around him.

Gossip and unhelpful drama always caused him distress. He often said, “all I want is for everyone around me to be happy.”

Rob had a great love and respect for nature and the outdoors. He was an expert skier and snowboarder who loved hiking, camping, and riding motocross motorcycles. One of his favorite passions was studying and training for Wing Chun, a Chinese martial art.

Rob truly loved his Wing Chun Sisters and Brothers. He was well-received by that community, where he developed excellent knowledge and proficiency in the “Art.” He received a great deal of joy teaching and training other students. Traveling was another of his passions. He enjoyed traveling to tropical locations, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico, with his wife Ana and son, Ethan. He also traveled to Costa Rica with his sister Kim and brotherin-law Art. They spent time hiking in the rainforest, carefully observing,

inspecting, and photographing flora and fauna.

Although it began in Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in countries around the world. People with Irish heritage remind themselves of the beautiful green countryside of Ireland by wearing green and taking part in the festivities.
