District takes responsibility for DOJ investigation, vows to put in the work to make changes

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—It’s been a week since the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that a twoyear investigation into the Davis School District found serious racial harassment and discrimination of Black and Asian-American students. In a settlement agreement with the DOJ, the district must comply with several requirements over the next five years.

“The investigation revealed persistent failures to respond to reports of race-based harassment of Black and Asian-American students by district staff and other students,” according to a DOJ release. “The department’s review, which focused on 2015-2020, found hundreds of documented uses of the N-word, among other racial epithets, derogatory racial comments and physical assaults targeting district students at dozens of schools.”

“When we got notice of the findings we knew there were incidents that had come up that were responded to but there were others we were not aware of,” said Chris Williams, Davis School District Director of Communication & Operations. “We knew many people were interviewed and they spent hundreds of hours with students, parents, administration and school administrators.”

It’s tough to read, he said. “Thinking we’re better than that and realizing it is us. Work on this will take years. It won’t be overnight. It’s not just for five years.”

It takes a cultural change, Williams said. “It has to involve every person, building administrator, student – it has to involve everybody to commit to do better. If there is one student out there who thinks they have to get away from the skin color they were born with or because of that skin color they have experienced harassment or been made to think their views aren’t warranted,” that is

As part of the agreement, the district must create a new department that will take the responsibility to look into any type of report of racial discrimination, he said.

“It will be headed by a director that the DOJ has vetted and three coordinators. The structure of the department will also have 30 school level administrators to assist in any sort of work, training and investigating of incidents.”

The DOJ will be involved in looking over the applications and resumes to make sure the director has experience in doing this sort of work, said Williams.

Stolen trailer later abandoned

The Kaysville Police Department is asking for the public’s help to locate the individual who stole a trailer sometime between late Friday, Oct. 15 to approximately noon on Saturday, Oct. 16 then abandoned it just west of the Whisperwood subdivision. Police are asking residents in that area to check their cameras to see if they have any footage of the trailer being pulled in the area during that time frame. If anyone is able to locate any videos, please contact Detective Ballard at 801-4977076.

Young man rescued in Farmington Canyon

Davis County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue crews were able to locate a young man Tuesday night and bring him down safely off the mountain after he got stuck on a cliff in Farmington Canyon while searching for a lost drone.

According to the DCSR Facebook page, the man had wet clothes and the cool evening was approaching quickly. Mountain teams located the young man, dressed him in dry clothing and loaded him with calories. The Department of Public Safety Star 9 was able to help by hoisting the young man down off the mountain.

His parents were anxiously awaiting at the landing zone. “Thanks to all team members, deputies and DPS flight team for a successful rescue!” the post read.

Victims of crime needed for research study

The Utah Criminal Justice Center (UCJC) in conjunction with the Utah Office for Victims of Crime (UVOC) is conducting a needs assessment of Utah’s victim advocacy system and looking for those who have been a victim of a person crime to participate.

The purpose of the study is to gather information about working with advocates and criminal justice stakeholders, adequacy of victim services, barriers to accessing services and suggestions for improving the quality of victim services.

LPD Drug Take Back a success

Thanks to the support of the community, the Layton Police Department beat their previous record on Drug Take Back day, Oct. 23.

Between what they collected in their lobby drop box over the past several months, plus the 98.5 pounds they collected last Saturday, they turned over 486.7 pounds of expired or unwanted medication to the DEA for destruction. For those who still want to turn in medication, the drop box at the LPD lobby is available 24/7. Many pharmacies and other police departments have drop boxes too. “Thank you for doing your part in keeping this medication from getting into the wrong hands,” a LPD Facebook post read.

Bountiful/Woods Cross WIC clinic closing

The Davis County Health Department has announced it will be closing the Bountiful/Woods Cross WIC clinic soon. In the future, all WIC services will only be available at the Clearfield WIC clinic located at 22 South State Street, First Floor, Clearfield.

DCHD is always taking new applicants for WIC. According to the DCHD Facebook page, WIC recently increased the amount of fruits and veggies for moms and children. Right now, breastfeeding moms can get $47/month just in fresh veggies/fruits. aul Krugman won a Nobel Prize for his analysis of economics, taxes, and employment issues. While he is revered by political progressives, he is scorned by staunch capitalists who hold firm that profits trickle down to lower-paid employees.

This past week he expressed his thoughts on the post-pandemic challenge of hiring employees. I agreed with much of what he wrote, but he stubs his toe when he says workers rightfully reject “lousy jobs.”

Krugman believes today’s dearth of employees has little to do with liberal unemployment benefits. “Conservatives blamed extended jobless benefits reducing the incentive to accept jobs,” he notes. “But states that canceled these benefits early saw no increase in employment, and the national end of enhanced benefits last month doesn’t seem to have made a difference either.”

In his view, “Long-suffering American workers have been underBY BRYAN GRAY paid and overworked for years and may have hit their breaking point…in a rich country that treats many of its workers remarkably bad.”

He is correct that the wealthy have gained much more than the average worker. Adjusted for inflation, the typical male worker earned virtually no more in 2019 than he would have 40 years ago. But Krugman loses me when he admires workers “rethinking their lives” and leaving “lousy jobs,” and either retiring or finding “less unpleasant jobs” in different industries.

Here’s my problem with this view.

First, very few American workers are treated like dogs in the workplace. If Krugman believes this, he ignores the plight of sweatshop workers in Africa, Central America, and some Asian countries.

As for “lousy jobs,” hold on one minute. All work should be considered valuable; a “dirty job” is still important. All jobs can at times be “unpleasant” and it is arrogant and elitist to expect all job tasks to be a sweet form of puff pastry.

A garbage collector provides as much service (and to a greater number of people) as a software developer. A roofer ascending an icy slope in January is as admirable as an architect working in a climate-controlled office. Drilling concrete to discover a leaky pipe is as helpful as analyzing an income statement from a couple applying for a mortgage on a starter home. There may be little glory in moving a box from a warehouse shelf to a waiting truck, but this task affects more people than that of creating a juicy new video game.

I can honestly say I have enjoyed and found satisfaction in every job I’ve worked: swimming pool cleaner, janitor in a messy bakery, bartender in a blue-collar country tavern, high school teacher, journalist, printing salesman, and an author. I never whined that someone else had a “classier” job. I never felt like I was an oppressed worker expecting a better deal from society. Yes, wages should be more equitable, but I always felt fortunate having even the “half-loaf” of American prosperity. Hating your job is a self-defeating depletion of your own worth and self-esteem.

Not all jobs are soothing and pleasant. That’s why it’s called work.

Combat pilot earns her wings

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com HILL AIR FORCE BASE—For Capt. Emily “Banzai” Thompson, soaring above the clouds is all in a day’s work. Thompson is the first female pilot to fly the F-35 in combat and uses her skills to help keep the country safe.

“In July of 2016 I was selected to go fly the F-16 in Tucson, Arizona,” Thompson said during a presentation at Hill Aerospace Museum. “I made it through the initial training in a fighter. It was nine months long then you’re an aviator so you have wings on your chest and you can go fly airplanes.”

Thompson said it was her first introduction to a real fighter. “It's the first time you’re doing air-to-air engagement and the first time dropping bombs. I loved flying in Tucson. It was an awesome time.”

After pilot training for the F-16 she moved on to training for the F-35. “I upgraded my motorcycle to a much better one,” said Thompson. “That’s also when I met my boyfriend Dan, who is also an F-35 pilot.”

Her assignments have taken her all over the world including a deployment to Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirate area. “It happened to be the first few moments of combat,” she said. “I didn’t anticipate that. It’s not the first time a stealth fighter

aircraft flew around Afghanistan. There was Enduring Freedom in the early 2000s.”

The F-35 is filled with high-tech equipment, she said. “It can carry ordnance internally and we have a special helmet that is customizable and fitted to the pilot. I don’t know if we should even consider it to be flying because it is so easy.”

It’s designed so that when a pilot is up there they can focus solely on their mission, said Thompson.

“You can be working your sensors and interpreting your maps and get all that information while the aircraft is pretty much doing its thing. We’re the quarterback of the flight. We can see more than anybody else to make the decisions that keep everybody safe.”

In addition to combat missions, the F-35 is also used as an escort. “We provide protection to get them into the target area and keep them safe and bring them back home.”

The F-35 can go up to 50,000 feet, she said. “It’s about where you can see the curvature of the Earth and to the point where you start panicking. That’s really,

really high. Usually we only fly up to 20,000-30,000 feet.”

Thompson said it’s fun to fly over cars when the F-35 is taking off from Hill. “If I was the guy driving along that road I’d think it was pretty awesome.” l

Program will address mental health for farmers, ranchers

armers, ranchers and others who work in the agriculture industry who face emotional challenges can now benefit from a new program just launched by Utah State University Extension. Ag Wellness focuses on the mental health needs of Utahns involved in those fields.

The program includes resources, online and in-person courses and a podcast specifically geared to improving mental health and helping farmers and ranchers live happy, fulfilled, productive lives.Tasha Howard, USU Extension assistant professor, said farmers and others who work in the agricultural field face unique mental health challenges, particularly after the difficult farming year due to drought and COVID-19.

“We are working to create a network of people who can help – from Extension agents to Farm Bureau and UDAF workers, to FFA club leaders and 4-H youth,” she said. “The goal is to create a network of friends, family and neighbors who can recognize the signs and symptoms of a

mental health issue and connect the person to the resources that can best help.”

Two courses will be hosted online through USU Extension – Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy for Ag (MHAA-Ag) and ACT for Ag. The MHAA-Ag course teaches participants to identify those who may be struggling with their mental health, locate high quality resources that can help, then connect them in a supportive way. The course has been taught multiple times in various formats and for different populations. It has been shown to increase mental health literacy and improve participants’ abilities to support someone who needs access to mental health resources.

ACT for Ag is a course that teaches farmers, ranchers and rural Utahns how to deal with the unique stressors they face.

This interactive course takes principles from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and turns them into actionable tasks so course participants can improve their own mental health in a self-paced course.

The Ag Wellness podcast supplements the material taught in both courses by sharing real-life stories from farmers and ranchers across the state. The first

What do you do if someone is in crisis?

ASK DIRECTLY It is safe and helpful to ask someone directly about suicide.

For example: “You’ve mentioned that you’ve been feeling hopeless lately. Are you having thoughts about killing yourself?”

LISTEN WITH CONCERN AND EMPATHY Give the person the opportunity to tell you how they’re feeling and what they’re going through.

Sometimes just expressing feelings and being heard can provide immense relief for someone who is struggling.

GET HELP Call or text a 24/7 crisis line such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to speak to a trained clinician, or connect to support via the SafeUtah app.

They can help you assess the risk of suicide and decide what to do next.

CREATE A SAFE SPACE Putting time and distance between a person at risk of suicide and a firearm can save a life.

Remove firearms and lethal medications from the home, if possible, or take extra precautions to lock them away.

BE A SUPPORT Involve family members, friends, or others to provide a safety net. Recovery is a process that takes time and support.

Help the person create a Safety Plan (like the one in the MY3 app) so they are prepared to manage returning thoughts of suicide.

Check in on them and help them stay engaged in treatment and on the road to recovery.

Suicide rates remain stable during the pandemic

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com SALT LAKE CITY—Although there has been an observed increase in the number of suicides and drug overdoses in other states, data shows that Utah has not seen an increase in these during the pandemic, according to a report by the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) released last week.

“We’ll still be dealing with the impact for years to come,” said Michael Staley, suicide prevention research coordinator with the UDOH. Suicide rates remain consistent with the trends prior to the pandemic.”

Utah had a disproportionate rate in suicides between the years of 2015-2020, he said. “The concern is among teens.

The death of just one is one too many.”

Any decrease is welcome news, said Staley. “Our work is never done until the number of suicides is zero. Suicide prevention is not limited to only those close to us, it belongs to the community, churches, etc.”

Death by suicide is overwhelmingly tragic, he said. “Someone dies every 13 hours by suicide. This is not acceptable.

Behind every one of those numbers is a devastated family.”

The data also showed that the number of Utahns who died by accidental or undetermined drug overdose from March 2020 to the end of May 2021 remained consistent with the number of deaths in previous years.

“For every death there are those that are not fatal and there are still consequences,” said Megan Broekemeier, Opioid Fatality Research Coordinator UDHD. “We look at the number of people who went to the emergency room to identify clusters and patterns.”

Overdoses are preventable, she said.

“We need to educate ourselves to recognize the signs of an overdose and how to respond.”

Broekemeier listed these points when responding to an overdose: • Try to wake the person up • Call 911 • Administer Naloxone • Check for breathing • Stay with the person “We all have a role to play in preventing suicide,” said Allison Foust, suicide prevention program administrator with the Utah Department of Human Services and co-chair of the Utah Suicide Prevention Coalition. “If you hear someone expressing hopelessness and thoughts of suicide you need to check in with them.”

Other signs include sleeping too little or too much or losing interest in things, she said. “Take all of these signs seriously. Ask directly and listen in a safe and helpful tone. It’s our responsibility to check in. Checking in can help prevent suicide.”

Teacher Academy School developing future educators

By Becky Ginos becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—Students who are currently pursuing a teaching degree have a unique opportunity in the Davis School District to see firsthand what it’s like to be in the classroom. The Teacher Academy School offered at model schools Sunburst and Clearfield elementaries provides students access to university professors and trained teachers who mentor them through the learning process.

“We’re really excited about what we’re doing,” said Allison Riddle, Elementary Mentor Supervisor for the district.

“This gives future teachers a chance to learn on site instead of only learning on campus. The learning is embedded into the school.”

University professors come in every day, she said. “We have a university classroom and some are pushing into the regular classes where teachers can observe them give a small mini lesson. Teachers are loving it and getting great ideas. The kids are loving it too. They love having guest

teachers and the energy is high.”

Dr. Vincent Bates, associate professor of arts at Weber State University integrates arts in the classes he teaches in the program. “He’s taught drumming and relates art to math and science,” said Riddle. “He’s done puppets. It’s all very hands on. It’s a rich experience for everyone involved.”

The program has students from WSU, USU and Western Governors University, she said. “USU/center for the school of the future is one of our university partners.

They brought a small cohort of Aggies down for a field study class. It’s designed to meet the week before school starts.”

They see what it takes to set up a class, Riddle said. “It’s incredible the work it takes to get set up. It’s connected to the learning of the first week to see what it looks like to start and how that first week of preparation affects the rest of the year.”

Western Governors has extended a teaching assistant program to students getting a bachelors in elementary education, she said. “We’ll get 17 teaching assistants that split their time between both Sunburst and Clearfield for 10 hours a week and WSU gives them full tuition at no cost.”

It’s called the Learn & Earn program, Riddle said. “We put out the application for the program, interview and hire them.

That’s our commitment. They provide tuition and mentor them through the elementary or special education program. They’re paid by the district. To keep either one

they have to do well in class and keep the position and stay at WGU.” It’s a fabulous program, she said. “The goal is we’ll hire them and they’ll be teachers in the Davis District. We’re developing our own. That’s what’s really fun.” l

Tradition continues with the Great Pumpkin Hunt

By Tom Haraldsen tom.h@davisjournal.com BOUNTIFUL—It started 25 years ago when then Bountiful Rotary Club president Chris Simonsen hosted the Great Pumpkin Hunt in his backyard. This year, the event celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Friends, neighbors and fellow Rotarians brought their families to the hunt on Thursday, Oct. 21. There was a donut eating contest (try eating a dangling donut with just your teeth and not using your hands!), a Kids costume parade, a visit from Sammy T. Clown who offered custom balloons for the children, and of course the Great Pumpkin Hunt in the Woodmoor Woods.

“Each of the pumpkins has a name on it, and the kids have to find the pumpkin with the name they’ve been given,” Simonsen said. “It’s a lot of fun, and of course the kids get to take home their pumpkins once they find them.”

There was also some fun food – chili, hot dogs and hot chocolate. Simonsen said the idea came about when Rotary Club members decided they wanted to do something fun for the youth and families in the community. And it’s been a tradition ever since. l

Weber State to host Native Symposium

W

eber State University will host various events throughout November in honor of Native American Heritage Month, culminating with the 16th Annual Native Symposium. The theme for this year is “Illuminating Native Voices.”

Native American Heritage Month events begin Nov. 1 with the artwork installation of “Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women” on the Shepherd Union Bridge. The display will be up for the entire month of November.

Author of the book, “Native American DNA: Tribal Belonging and the False Promise of Genetic Science,” Kimberly Tallbear-Dauphine, is a professor of Native Studies at the University of Alberta and member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate tribe in South Dakota. She will deliver the keynote speech online at 6 p.m. on Nov. 3. Registration is required.

“It is important to remind WSU and the community that Native American people continue to persevere and thrive during some of these difficult uncertain times that included COVID-19, and more recently, the uncovering of the remains of Indigenous children at current and

former residential and boarding schools in North America,” said Tashina Barber, WSU’s Center for Multicultural Excellence retention counselor and advisor to the Native American Student Association. “It is critical to illuminate Native voices during these times to ensure accurate narratives from the past, present and for the future.”

On Nov. 11, a film screening of “Chasing Voices” will be held in Shepherd Union Ballroom A at 5:30 p.m. The film tells the story of ethnologist John Peabody Harrington’s language restoration research on the last speakers of the dying languages of Native Americans.

The Native American Student Association will lead the Native American Heritage Solidarity Week Nov. 15-19 with events each day.

Stats: 82% of older adults plan to stay put

T

he American Advisors Group, a home equity agency, recently conducted the “Importance of Home Survey,” polling 1,552 participants ages 60-75. While the conclusion is that most older adults want to age in place if they could, they recognize that this might not be possible. Organizations can learn from the survey responses about ways they might make their communities a more attractive option. Among the findings: • 82% of respondents said they would live in their homes for the rest of their lives if they could.

• The desire to live in one’s home ties closely to a feeling of safety. More than four in five respondents (83%) said they feel safer at home than in other living options.

• 40% of older adults answered that “independence” is the most important benefit to continuing to live in their current home. Their “happiness” was the second most popular answer, at 25%.

• The COVID-19 pandemic strengthened how older adults feel about living at home. Half (50%) said the pandemic made their desire to live at home stronger.

• Respondents see value in their homes that goes beyond finances. Nearly two in three (62%) said they have an emotional attachment to their home.

• Family life is the reason that older adults have an emotional attachment to their home. Over half (56%) said their home reminds them of their family.

• 74% said buying a home was the best financial decision they have ever made.

• 55% have paid off their mortgage.

DCHD promotes cleaner air through Vehicle Repair and Replacement Assistance program

CLEARFIELD—Pollution is an ongoing challenge for the state. In an effort to get cleaner air along the Wasatch Front, the Davis County Health Department in partnership with UCAIR is offering a Vehicle Repair and Replacement Assistance Program (VRRAP).

“The purpose is to improve our air quality in Davis County,” said Brielle with the Air Quality Program of the DCHD. “Because 50 percent of air pollution comes from cars alone. Cars that have failed emissions contribute 100 times more pollutants than cars that are working properly.”

The purpose is to get those vehicles either repaired or off the road, she said. “Especially older vehicles that tend to emit more fumes. In Utah we like our old cars. Almost 26 percent of the whole vehicle fleet along the Wasatch Front are 2003 or older.

We want to get our residents to have newer cars that are working cleaner and more efficiently to improve air quality.”

The program is made possible by grants received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

through the health department’s partnership with UCAIR, said Brielle. “They give us the funding for those who may not be able to afford to repair their failing vehicle or replace that failing vehicle.”

To receive assistance, individuals must meet the income requirements, she said. “To qualify their household income must be less than 300 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. So if you are 200 percent or below you qualify for 100 percent of the repair costs up to $1,000. If it is 250 percent it covers 75 percent and you pay the rest and 300 percent it pays 50 percent of the cost up to $500.”

Vehicles that qualify for repair assistance must have failed an emissions test and be registered in Davis County under the owner's name for at least 12 months, Brielle said. “There also has to be no evidence of tampering.”

Repairs need to be related to the emissions system, she said. “It can’t be tires or a windshield.

Anything that makes the engine light go on.”

Another part of the program is vehicle replacement. “Vehicles that are 2003 or older can be replaced with a newer, cleaner vehicle,” said Brielle.

“The vehicle must be able to drive on its own power to the dealership. Individuals will be given a vouch-

er to purchase a newer vehicle that meets the EPA emissions standards. The dealership will know which vehicle falls into that category. The odometer has to read 70,000 miles or less and not cost more than $35,000.”

The amount an individual gets also depends on their income level, she said. “If you’re 200 percent or below you get $4,000 to $5,500, 250 percent or below 3,500 to $5,000 and 300 percent or below is $3,000 to $4,500.”

Participants can get an application at the DCHD on the second floor or they can also go online to the DCHD website and print out the application.

“We need the most recent tax form for income verification,” said Brielle. “If you don’t have your tax form call us for other forms that can be used. We also need proof of a failed emissions test. Then we’ll give you a voucher based on how much you qualify for to take the vehicle to a certified repair station to be fixed or to buy a new car.”

Moderna/Johnson & Johnson boosters now available FARMINGTON—The Davis County Health Department is now offering a booster dose for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines at the Legacy Events Center drive-thru COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic.

The CDC approved the booster doses on Oct. 22 for those who are eligible and they were made available at the clinic on Monday, Oct. 25.

Booster doses are recommended for the following people who received the Moderna vaccine six months after receiving their second dose: • People who are 65 years of age or older • People who love in a long-term care facility • People 18 and older with underlying medical conditions that put them at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 People who live or work in a setting that puts them at a higher risk of exposure to COVID-19, such as healthcare workers and teachers.

The CDC also recommends anyone ages 18 and older who received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine get a booster dose at

least two months after they had their initial dose. The recommendation also allows for mixing and matching of COVID-19 vaccines which means individuals can receive a different type of booster than what they originally received.

“For all those that qualify for a COVID-19 booser dose, the time to seek it out and schedule an appointment is right now!” Trevor Warner, Communications Manager for the Davis County Health Department said. “We need to get as many booster doses administered as we can, right now, because soon, anyone ages 5 to 11 years old, will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine and as a result, booster dose appointments will not be as widely available as they are right now.”

Still, it’s safe for both kids and adults. Laika’s first big movie, Coraline, is a stop-motion masterpiece where a girl has to battle the monstrous Other Mother. Though it’s sadly not on any subscription streaming service right now, it can still be rented from various platforms.

If you’re looking to give yourself chills this Halloween, there’s no better way to do it than some of the most well-known horror movies ever made.

Peacock has an entire collection of them, including such well-known staples of the genre as “Friday the 13th,” “Nightmare on Elm Street,” and “Night of the Living Dead.” They also include more classic haunts like the 1931 “Dracula” and “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” (They also have a host of spooky sequels, but like with most genres horror sequels are often a case of diminishing returns.)

Those aren’t the only iconic horror movies ready to stream. The original “Jaws” is available on Netflix, while Paramount+ gives you access to the original “Psycho” and “Child’s Play.” Over on AMC+, there’s

Region volleyball play winding down

oods Cross picked up two key Region 5 wins last week, including one over fourth-ranked Bountiful.

The Redhawks and Davis split their two matches, with Farmington and Viewmont also picking up wins this week.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross picked up a big win over Bountiful Oct. 19 in four sets, winning the first two and closing out a tight fourth set 26-24. The final score was 25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 26-24 for Woods Cross.

The Wildcats were led by Olivia Ruy with 17 kills and Lauren Bodily with 11. Camille Clark served up three aces and Akilisi Pahulu ran the offense with 41 assists. Danielle Sullivan had 10 blocks while Nora Campbell got 21 digs to go with Saane Katoa 17, Ruy 15 and Pahulu 10.

Against Box Elder Oct. 21, Woods Cross won 25-7, 19-25, 25-10, 25-8 behind a combined 29 kills from Ruy and Katoa. Katoa recorded six aces with Campbell adding five of the team’s 17.

Bountiful

Bountiful lost its first Region 5 match this year to Woods Cross. Jordyn and Taylor Harvey teamed up for 26 kills to lead the Redhawks while Jordyn Harvey and Halle Hewitt combined for seven of the team’s 10 aces from the serving line. Defensively, Taylor Harvey led at the net with five blocks with Evi Chism recording three. Elle Burleson had 17 digs, along with Jordyn Harvey’s 13, Chism’s 11 and Mia Ray’s 10 who also helped toward the team total of 61.

Bountiful bounced back Oct. 21 with a sweep of Northridge 25-14, 2515, 25-15. Ray led the way with 11 kills while Jordyn Harvey added nine. Chism ran the Redhawks offense with 33 assists to go with five kills, three aces and two blocks. Burleson recorded 15 digs on the defensive side with Jordyn Harvey digging up nine.

Bountiful is now 8-1 in Region 5 and 22-3 overall this season.

Davis

Rough second quarter dooms Davis football in playoff

I

t’s been an up-and-down season for the Davis football team. It was fitting, then, that the Darts’ first-round playoff game had the same trends.

Davis fell at home to Herriman Oct. 22 in the opening round of the Class 6A state tournament by the score of 35-21.

Like the season as a whole, Davis had moments where things went well but stretches where the opposing team had its way.

In this game, it was the second quarter that Davis players and coaches would like to forget.

After the Darts were trailing just 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, Herriman reeled off 21 points in the second. All three touchdowns were via the air, as the Davis defense had a hard time stopping the Herriman attack. Davis was able to cut into a 21-0 deficit just before halftime, thanks to a Jackson Stevens to Hunter Anderson connection on a 45-yard touchdown pass.

That was as close as the Darts got.

Down 21-7, Davis surrendered another Herriman touchdown just before halftime to go down 28-7 at the break.

The third quarter saw another Herriman touchdown, making the score an insurmountable 35-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Darts did add a pair of scores in the final nine minutes, making the final tally more respectable. Stevens hit Trey Talbot from 4 yards out with 8:55 to play.

With 1:06 left, Stevens threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Ty Hoagland.

Stevens had some good stats in a

losing cause. The sophomore was 25 of 45 for 322 yards and three touchdowns.

Herriman shut down the Davis running game, holding Talbot to 19 yards on nine carries. Hoagland and Easton Baggett each had five catches for Davis. Maxwell Painter had four catches for a game-high 81 yards. Defensively, Jeff Sumsion and Colby Flint were all over the field, compiling 17 and 13 tackles, respectively.

Braden Neeley added 11 stops.

Davis finishes the 2021 campaign with a 5-6 record after starting the year 2-1 and 4-3. Davis placed fourth in Region 1 with a 3-3 record and entered the state tournament as the No. 15 seed.

Stevens finished the year with 1,792 yards passing and 11 touchdowns. Talbot was the leading rusher with 492 yards.

He, along with Baggett and Dakoda Kempthorne, had four touchdowns on the ground. Talbot also had catches, though the leading receiver was Painter, who had 51 catches for 683 yards. Five Darts had at least 25 receptions.

On defense, Flint racked up 139 tackles and had three sacks. Sumsion had 93 tackles, and Neeley had 84. Jensen Jacobs had four interceptions on the year.

Other playoff action Farmington finished the regular season with a 7-3 record. The Phoenix were 5-1 in Region 1, placing second. The Phoenix secured the No. 6 seed and had a first-round bye. They host West on Friday.

In Class 5A, Bountiful won Region 5 by going a perfect 5-0. The Redhawks were 7-2 in the regular season, earning the No. 4 seed. Bountiful hosts Park City in the second round of the playoffs this Friday after having a first-round bye last week. l

Farmington defeated Layton 25-16, 25-8, 25-23 Oct. 19. The Phoenix were led by Lydia Schwemmer and Elle Skabelund with seven kills each while Jocelyn McQuivey served up five aces.

Alysa Whitney and Skabelund were a force at the net with nine total blocks between them while McQuivey had 13 digs defensively and Sophie Wendt (11)

and Kenna Liwanag (10) also recorded double-digit digs.

Farmington is now 5-6 in Region 1 and 7-12 on the year.

Viewmont

Viewmont swept Bonneville 25-11, 25-10, 25-13 Oct. 21.

Grace Mackay put away 11 kills to lead the Vikings with Liza Montalbo and Kaylee Smith recording eight each as well. Macey Christian had 25 assists in distributing the ball on offense while also having three kills. At the net, Maddie Lege “had a great game,” according to head coach Cathy Hope, with nine blocks. Smith and Montalbo had 23 digs combined to lead defensively.

Viewmont’s Region 5 mark is now 4-5 with a 15-11 season record.

Bountiful Lake:

Fishing is slow. An angler fishing from the boat ramp caught a rainbow trout casting and retrieving a Rapala.

Deer Creek Reservoir: The water level is currently at 58% full, and was stocked with 42,000 10-inch Rainbow Trout on Sept. 28. For boat anglers targeting trout, try fishing mornings (sunrise to 10 a.m.) slow trolling the upper water column (10’-20’ water depth) using spoons such as the Luhr Jensen Needlefish, Luhr Jensen Krocodile, Zona Lures Z-Ray, Mack’s Lure Hum Dinger, Acme Kastmaster, Mepps Sycloops, Thomas Buoyant, Michigan Stinger, or the Eppinger Dardevle.

East Canyon Reservoir and State Park: Fishing is good. An angler who fished from shore recently caught 10 rainbow trout in just 30 minutes of fishing. He was fishing by the boat ramp below the cabins. He was using rainbow PowerBait and fishing off the bottom.

The water level is low. Only one lane on the boat ramp is available for launching.

Farmington Pond:

Fishing is good. One angler who was fishing from the fishing dock was

casting and retrieving a red and gold Jake’s Spin-a-Lure and had caught eight rainbow trout. Other anglers who were fishing nearby were also catching fish.

Jordanelle Reservoir:

Fishing is fair. The water level is currently at 52% full. For shore anglers targeting trout, try using a bread ball, shoepeg corn, or half of a night crawler fished below a bobber or fished behind a casting bubble, or half a nightcrawler with a marshmallow fished off the bottom using a fixed sinker or Carolina (sliding sinker) rig. Fishing a fly and a bubble, dressed inline spinners (having marabou or other feather material tied to the lures hook), minnow mimic stickbaits and crankbaits are also effective.

Finally a report, and fishing is fair to good. An angler who fished the river recently caught five fish during a three-hour trip. He was using nymphs. If

you’re planning a spin fishing or fly fishing trip to one of the rivers this fall, here are some good lures and flies to try: For fly anglers, streamers are great flies to use for brown trout. Hare’s Ears, Pheasant Tails, sowbugs, and San Juan Worms are also good files to try. The water level on the rivers is low right now. Expect to find fish distributed throughout the rivers, in deep pools and runs.

Pineview Reservoir:

Fishing is fair. A group of anglers who fished from shore in the Narrows recently caught some bluegill. They were using jigs under a bobber, tipped with a piece of worm, and 16-ounce orange PowerBait Pro Jig Worms tipped with a piece of worm. Note: The division has issued an emergency rule change. The following changes are effective immediately and will remain in place until Oct. 31, 2021. Daily limits at Pineview are as follows: 100 bluegill, 100 yellow perch, 40 black crappie, and 48 black bullhead. Strawberry Reservoir:

The reservoir is at 73.3% full. Fishing is good overall, and good to great for boat and float tube anglers. The lake’s water clarity is improving, and larger cutthroat trout are feeding closer to shore. Fishing mornings and evening for boat and float tube anglers, and evenings for shore anglers is seeing good results.

White 2.5- to 3.5-inch tube jigs (rigged using a tube bait jig head or a nose rig) are working very well (fished with and without an additional stinger/trailer hook). White, olive, and purple/black wooly bugger and leech patterns (fished with and without a nymph trailer) are also working very well.

Willard Bay:

Fishing is good. Two anglers who fished from a boat recently caught 17 channel catfish. They were trolling using blue and silver floating jigs. They found the most success between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. and then again around noon. The largest catfish caught was 25.5 inches long. Another angler who fished from a boat caught only one channel catfish.

He was using shrimp. The water levels remain low in both the North and South Marinas. Boat launching is at your own risk. l

What to expect during the 2021 pheasant and quail hunts

T

he general-season pheasant and quail hunts open Nov. 6. If you are planning to target either of these birds this fall, here is what you should know.

Utah’s general pheasant hunting season runs from Nov. 6 to Dec. 5. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources releases thousands of pheasants on various wildlife management areas around the state each week during the general-season hunt.

The number of pheasants and where they can be found will depend on where you are hunting in Utah. In northern Utah, there was an average brood production and no major population declines – despite the drought conditions – since the birds were still able to access water in rivers and irrigation canals. Hunting success should be about the same as last year. The majority of pheasants in this region can be located on private land in the eastern portion of Box Elder County.

Hunters should remember that written permission from landowners is required to hunt on any private lands.

In general, pheasants like areas with nearby fields of wheat or corn that pro-

vide feed for them. Pheasants also prefer habitat with stemmed grass that provides nesting cover, as well as areas with dense woods or wetlands with thick cattails that provide shelter during the snowy winter months. These birds are good at hiding in brush, so hunting with a well-trained dog will increase your chances of success.

Walking along ditch banks or fence lines is also a good hunting strategy.

Pheasants typically prefer to run rather than fly away, so if you walk along these areas, you are more likely to drive them out into the open, where they will flush.

Visit the Division of Wildlife Resources website to see where pheasants will be released throughout the season.

(Many of the locations include Wildlife Management Areas and walk-in access areas – which is an area of private land on which the DWR has leased certain hunting, trapping or fishing privileges.)

Hunters should also remember that several of the WMAs require non-toxic shot (for example, steel shot) when hunting. Lead shot may not be used. For

Utah’s general quail hunting season runs from Nov. 6 to Dec. 31.

Hunting quail also differs in each area of the state. In northern Utah, the drought didn’t have major impacts to the populations, since they primarily stayed in agricultural fields that were irrigated.

Hunters should also be able to locate quail near the Great Salt Lake wetlands.

In northeastern Utah, much of the quail habitat is on private land, so make sure to obtain written permission from the landowner prior to hunting. Quail populations in this area weren’t impacted by drought since they are mostly located on the irrigated agricultural fields that still had water.

In central Utah, the highest concentrations of California quail are in urban areas, which limits most hunting opportunities. The highest populations of quail are found in and around Tooele City.

California and Gambel’s quail are hunted using similar methods – just in different habitats. When hunting Gambel’s quail, look for Joshua trees, dry washes and draws with black brush or desert almond. California quail will occupy washes containing water and brushy cover, and will eat flowers from grasses, trees and shrubs, as well as seeds and leaves.

The statewide youth pheasant hunt will take place from Oct. 30 to Nov. 4, and pheasants will be released just before the hunt. The statewide youth quail hunt

will take place from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.

If you were 17 years of age or younger on July 31, and you’ve completed Hunter Education, you can participate in the hunt. If you haven’t yet finished Hunter Education – and you’re at least 12 years old – you still might be able to participate through Utah’s Trial Hunting program. You must also have a hunting license and follow all of the state’s upland game hunting rules.

To add an extra challenge to your hunts this fall, consider participating in the Upland Game Slam. Similar to the Utah Cutthroat Slam, it encourages hunters to harvest a variety of upland game species, while generating money to help fund a variety of habitat and upland game-related projects.

Hunters complete a slam by harvesting the required amount of the target species. Each slam is designed to give you an extra challenge while you’re hunting, as well as the opportunity to earn a commemorative, collectible coin.

The entry fee is $20 for hunters 18 years of age or older, or $10 for hunters 17 years of age or younger. The “Appetizer Slam” includes some of Utah’s smaller game birds, including California quail, Gambel’s quail and mourning dove. To complete the slam, hunters must harvest one of each of the three species within a single hunting season. Learn more about how to participate in the various Upland Game Slams on the DWR website.

A: These sorts of questions are always a little disappointing, either because the “winner” is a show no one has heard of or because there is no clear winner at all. In this case, both are true.

It appears that the award for longest TV show intro goes to an Iranian drama called “Zire Tigh” (the title translates as “Under the Blade”). It was a prime-time, soapstyle family saga, and its credits ran a whopping three minutes and 21 seconds.

That news is probably a little disappointing because it’s unlikely many people reading this will have seen an episode of “Zire Tigh.” Our hearts, of course, go out to the Iranians who had to sit through that slogging intro, but the fact just doesn’t hit home. (It should be said that “Zire Tigh” was a landmark hit in Iran, so perhaps the credits weren’t that much of a drag.)

In terms of shows that have been broadcast in North America, it’s even less clear, but it seems “The Prisoner” had the longest opening sequence. (Yes, it’s a British show, but it was rerun heavily over on this side of the Atlantic.)

The extended version of the credits ran for three minutes (almost exactly). I say “extended version” because it varied a little over the course of the season — shorter credits aired in later episodes.

If you’re still thinking, “OK, but people from the rest of the world have more time on their hands — surely North American shows are snappier,” then I have two words for you: “Twin Peaks.”

For those who love true crime stories full of twists, turns and shocking revelations, AMC+ has just the show. “Ragdoll,” premiering Thursday, Nov. 11, on the streamer, follows law enforcement as they try to crack the case of a notorious serial killer known as The Ragdoll Killer. The dark, moody series has already left as TV fans prepare to unlock answers in a premiere season they are not soon to forget.

And there is perhaps no one better to star in this dark thriller drama than Lucy Hale (“Son of the South,” 2020), as the 32-year-old actress is no stranger to mystery and intrigue.

She landed her big break on “Pretty Little Liars,” the ABC Family series that follows a group of teenage girls uncovering secrets and unraveling the show’s dark plot to find out what happened to their missing friend. While Hale had scored many roles before her time on “Pretty Little Liars,” including 2008’s movie “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2,” it wasn’t until Hale took center stage in this show that fans experienced the full gravitas of her performance style.

Acting for years before she signed on with ABC, Hale’s passion for the craft has only evolved with her career.

Having convinced her mother to move from her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career at 15, Hale has certainly made the most of the move.

Following her success on ABC Family, she was cast in Jeff Wadlow’s 2018 horror flick, “Truth or Dare,” and his 2020 film, Blumhouse’s “Fantasy Island.” Hale deftly turns otherworldly moments into something real and true in both films, reeling the audience into the story. But it wasn’t all horror for Hale: between on-screen scares, she dove into emotionally complex roles and lighter plots, playing Stella in “Life Sentence” and Katy in “Katy Keene.”

Book Nook – Tsalix Silverthorn continues in his quest for the talismans Tsalix Silverthorn and the Maelstrom of Tears, Richard Siddoway, Cayelle Publishing

or Tsalix Silverthorn and his fellow villagers Asur and Kwercus, their quest to fulfill a promise made to King Elosha doesn’t get any easier – but it does take some new twists. Bountiful author Richard Siddoway’s latest novel in the four-book series has been released, and as in the first two books, Tsalix Silverthorn and the Maelstrom of Tears finds plenty of challenges and lots of danger in front of our heroes.

If you haven’t read the first two novels in the series, this third is the continuing story of a courageous young man (Tsalix) leading a dangerous quest to restore peace and order in the tiny village of Aravah in the Kingdom of Sodizen. King Elosha is close to death, and his twin sons, Princes Abadon and Johona, are engaged in a battle to take over the throne. As you might guess, one of the sons (Abadon) has evil intentions of becoming

dictatorial, while Johona is much more loving and peaceful. King Elosha summons Tsalix and his friends to retrieve these talismans from their hidden places, and thus prevent Abadon from taking power.

The friends and allies are in a quest to find the third of three prophesied talismans, but it’s hidden on Mount Litso, which is surrounded by

the Sea of Tabass and its whirlpool that travels across its surface. To make matters worse, the mountain itself is home to giants who have pledged themselves to Abadon. It is Abadon’s hope to gain all the power for himself, something he cannot do if Tsalix and friends are successful.

Siddoway is of course a New York Times bestselling author whose first published novel, The Christmas Wish, was made into a TV movie starring the late Debbie Reynolds along with Neil Patrick Harris and Naomi Watts. It is shown almost annually on CBS. Siddoway said it took him about a year to complete each of the four books in this series. The final book will be released in 2022.

In a previous interview, Siddoway said that, “Every book I have written has the underlying theme of good over evil. In Tsalix Silverthorn, I hope readers will get a sense of the uplifting undertones within the larger concept of the story.”

The journey is formidable for

these young men, who exercise extreme faith, and overcome a number of obstacles, as they summon within themselves the strength necessary to fight against opposition.

The latest novel lets readers feel the emotions of these young men – their fears at times but also their bravery. Lovers of fantasy will enjoy Siddoway’s situational creativity, not to mention all those names of people and places he has conjured up!

Things to know about your Medicare options

t’s Medicare open enrollment time through Dec. 7, and like many recipients, I’ve been getting a lot of promotional materials outlining options. Much of what I’ve read is confusing, but like the 61 million Americans who are on Medicare, I’m most concerned about making sure I have adequate coverage and can maximize the benefits to which I’m entitled.

That said, here are some basic things that first time, or renewing, members should know about Medicare.

• Traditional Medicare. Traditional Medicare provides the same level of coverage to all enrollees across the country. There are no pre-existing condition limitations or wait periods. Every medical provider who accepts Medicare will treat a patient on traditional Medicare in any part of the country. If you travel frequently, you might look into a Medicare Supplement policy that will limit your out-of-pocket exposure.

• Medicare Parts A, B, C and D. Here’s how the alphabet soup of Medicare coverage breaks down.

Medicare Part A pays for hospital and skilled nursing facility care. Medicare Part B pays 80 percent of costs for doctors, outpatient services and medical equipment. Medicare Part C is private Advantage Plans.

• Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage Plans are managed as HMO or PPO programs by private health insurance companies. They have lower out-ofpocket costs for staying in-network. They also offer prescription services (replacing Medicare Part D), and extra services such as dental, vision, hearing, care-related home improvements, transportation and even meal services.

• The costs. Understanding Medicare premiums and out-of-pocket costs could mean the difference in thousands of dollars for enrollees. Most people will not pay a premium for Part A, but they will for Part B, Part C, and Part D. In 2021, the premium for Part B is $148.50 a month. The average Part D premium is $30.50 a month. Anyone who enrolls in a Medicare Advantage Plan or purchases a Medigap policy (which pays for any gaps in coverage) will pay premiums to the insurance company. Medicare Advantage enrollees still pay the Part B premium in addition to their Advantage Plan premiums. Medigap plans, sold by insurance companies, have a range of monthly premiums based on the plan type.

• Prescription coverage. In addition to a monthly premium, Medicare Part D prescription coverage also has out-of-pocket costs. As of 2021, once out-of-pocket costs reach $4,130 the recipient is responsible for 25% of costs for the remainder of that year. If prescription drug costs reach $6,550 in the same year, the

share paid by the individual will then decrease to 5%.

Feb. 6, 1963 – Oct. 23, 2021 Vint Gary Shurtliff went home to the embrace of his Heavenly Father Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021 at the age of 58 due to complications from the COVID-19 virus.

Vint was born to Gary and Lana Shurtliff Feb. 6, 1963 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Shortly after his first sister joined their family they moved to Southern California where the family gained his next sister and the long awaited brother he had always hoped for. His formative years were in Riverside, California. While he was known and remembered as being part of many sports such as baseball, wrestling and his beloved football, he learned a love for theater. His summers were spent either in the family pool, at the beach or with family in Idaho surrounded by cousins who loved him.

He would always look to his youth as a cherished memory and one of his best times of life surrounded by love, good TV and music!

After graduating high school at Riverside Poly High, Vint served an 18 month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Atlanta, Georgia Mission. After coming home he met and married Monique LaDue and together they had four boys who were his world. Travis, Aaron, Adam and Robbie were his proudest accomplishments. As a young father he attended and graduated from UC San Bernardino. While teaching Jr. High in Riverside, Vint found he had a special talent for those who had special needs and that skill would carry over later in his career. He was also able at this time to be involved in a local theater company directing many plays. He loved when he could involve his own family in the theater with him. This led to shared interests with his kids that continues today. His family relocated to Salt Lake City in 2005 where Vint found work as an employment counselor for the special needs community.

Vint could always be found supporting his boys and his family members either on a sports field coaching or cheering them on. He learned to love lacrosse as much as football because

it was a passion for several of his boys.

He was happiest when he was surrounded by family. His boys, siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins were really all Vint needed to be happy.

He loved a good movie, a fun game of cards, laughing at a comedy club, watching college sports and UFC, and going to the theater but he really was an old soul at heart. He loved a quiet talk, a long drive or when possible sitting on the deck at our beloved family cabin in Idaho just watching the lake. He was a big burly guy, who aced sarcasm but had the huge sentimental heart of a teddy bear.

In addition to being a dedicated father, son, brother and uncle, his time was also spent in service to his church and family, being a main caregiver to his mother the last few years. His unwavering faith and testimony in God and the mighty power of the Atonement were always an example to us and he was ready to share his insights whenever he could. He never stopped trying to improve his relationship with his Savior.

Vint joins his hero and father, Gary Shurtliff in Heaven as well as all his beloved grandparents who he always thought he was their favorite being first grandson on both sides. He is survived by children Travis (McKenzie) Shurtliff, Aaron Shurtliff, Adam (McCall) Shurtliff and Robbie Shurtliff. His pride and joy grandchildren Preszley (Travis), Ryker (Travis), Cooper (Adam) and Becket (Adam) Shurtliff, his mother Lana, siblings Lynlee, Wendy and Ryan and many nieces and nephews, cousins young and old who will all miss him dearly but know he’ll be close by and we’ll see him again soon.

Families are forever.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29, 2021 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel at 270 North 300 East, Centerville, UT., where the family will have a visitation for friends and family prior to the funeral from 1 – 1:45 p.m.
