This Christmas break was an opportunity for us to work on the building as usual and so we invited Just Wood Floors to install a new hardwood floor into Room 15. This room is a favourite for the pilates, yoga, dance and martial arts classes.

As the 3 year anniversary of the war in the Ukraine approaches, this exhibition is a reminder that despite all the difficulties and hardship, Ukrainian culture survives and develops; that despite the ever more raging war, its people aim to remain resilient and positive.
Uniting through the Arts: talking meaningfully and developing together
Long term local resident, brain injury survivor and Outsider artists, Xavier White returns to Mycenae House with art works that evidences his creative and rehabilitative journey over the last 10 years.
This exhibition presents a selection of imprints from his many Journey Books that show his visual research, exploring the creative investigations of and recovery from brain injury sustained from a road accident whilst cycling. Since his accident Xavier has returned to Maudsley Hospital in South London, the site of his original rehabilitation where he has been given support to realise his ambition of an artistic residency at London South Bank University.
Xavier also has come under the Outside In artist umbrella which has seen his work tour the country, leaving footprints of his work in various special places (Glasgow Fire Station, University of East Anglia, Polkey Ward KCL, and this large Cohedia canvas remains on display in the Keyworth Building London Southbank Bank University).

We are delighted to welcome the Squeeze legend to Mycenae House for this special event to mark the launch of a brand new album that has local significance.
"Chris grew up on the Combe Avenue estate in Westcombe Park during the 60s and 70s and has recorded a series of songs harking back to those times.
Drawing on his memories of life on a council estate, as a child and then as a young man, and with a little help from his friend John Barnes, Chris is putting together a Podcast, which should be available spring/summer 2025.
He is also in the process of writing a book on the subject."

“A rich and stimulating learning environment that will help nurture young people into capable individuals”
Everyone who uses Mycenae House will have noticed changes to the park at the back of the building. Mycenae Gardens is getting refurbished thanks to the Friends group and a score of volunteers, including neighbours, parents of Waldorf School students, and the wonderful Good Gym; and with kind grant support from Veolia and the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association.
There are now three fenced off areas which are being planted with a range of shrubs and flowering plants. The Friends committee asks all users to respect those barriers. One area is for wildflowers, adding to the variety of food sources for pollinators. The others are for taller bushy plants and a more formal style of garden. Again, they are being planted with wildlife in mind. You should see the results from this spring, and over coming years as the plantings mature.
The Gardens also have a substantial area set aside for wildlife alone. This is marked out by ‘dead hedging’: piled up lines of branches form a line protecting the west side of the park and the even wilder Dell just below, to stop people from disturbing the birds and butterflies that are living there. The volunteers are adding to the dead hedge monthly, and as the lower parts break down and nourish the soil, the piles should continue to form a barrier. Mycenae Gardens and the Dell are a designated SINC, an area of Special Interest for Nature Conservation, and this protection of wildlife is one reason for that. The Friends ask that users stay out of the wildlife areas, and don’t let children or pets enter them.
This combination of welcomes for humans and for wildlife makes Mycenae Gardens unique locally. The Friends group wants to celebrate it with a monthly Photo Competition, so please send your pictures of park life to them at friendsofmycenaegardens@gmail.com. Your photo could be shown in Mycenae House, on the notice board, and in the Westcombe News!
Anyone who likes a bit of outdoor activity can volunteer on the monthly sessions. These will be held on the last Sunday of the month in January, March, May, and July and on the last Saturday of the month in February, April, and June. They start at 10:30, and go till 1:00. You don’t need prior knowledge, there is always a variety of tasks. Some may be more intensive and some calmer, but the sessions are always fun and a great way to meet Yourcenae neighbours and friends.

Mycenae House has its own welcoming, atmospheric and well stocked Café/Bar. It serves as the beating heart of this busy venue.
Visited by users of the house, and others, it is a place to catch up with friends, meet for business, or to regenerate after a session in one of the many rooms for hire. It is often at the centreofmanyoftheevents, concerts, wedding receptions and parties held at the house. Do drop by and feel the warm welcome of Mycenae House
It is also ideal for laptop based remote workers looking to enjoy our free high speed broadband whilst enjoying the yummy things on offer
‘The cafe at this place is phenomenal! The staff are so friendly and helpful, even on busy days when the room is packed with after school kids, club-goers, and hot deskers. They’re open late in the summer, and on nights without noisy events it’s a really relaxing and quiet place to get a nice drink and do some work. Seriously could not recommend the charming and well-stocked cafe more!‘ Lee Rodgers
‘Honestly a pleasure to visit several days in a row and just wished I lived nearer to it to take better advantage of what is on offer.’ Nick Gazard (Google)
