In every organization, there areoccasionstoreflectonthe journey and achievements of those who have significantly contributed to its success. Dara Northfield, our CFO and DirectorofFinance,isretiring, and anyone who has been around her knows how impactful she's been to the MYAS.
But I think context matters, and I want to paint a full picture of who Dara is, why she was so influential, and what legacy she leaves in our organization and in her community.
Dara joined MYAS in 1998 as our accountant. This was still considered the early years of ourorganization,asMYASwas founded in 1991. From her first days, she embodied a unique blend of professionalism and warmth, earning her the affectionate moniker of the "MYAS mom." Herinfluenceextendedbeyond her official duties, supporting colleagues with both workrelated and personal challenges.
Overtheyears,herdedication to the organization has been instrumental in maintaining thehighstandardsofintegrity and values that define MYAS. She has been a steadfast figure who has ensured that ourorganizationhasremained in good standing year after year.
Butshedidn'tdothingsalone. Dara has been a superb collaborator,
with an intuitive sense of balancing financial prudence with a common-sense approach,allowingtheteamto mediate differences constructively. This approach nurtured strong working relationships based on mutual respect and understanding, which I valued greatly during mytimeasExecutiveDirector.
Culture matters within any organization, and Dara was intentional in fostering positivity at MYAS. She consistently adhered to a business casual dress code, and she had an open-door policy that endeared her to leaders inside and outside of ourorganization.
It wasn't unusual for Dara to go above and beyond. One of thebestexamplesIcanrecall is her time serving MYAS as a tournament director for baseball and basketball tournaments.
Though she had no obligation to take on this position, she did so to gain a deeper understanding of the organization’s operational challenges. This experience not only broadened her perspective, but it also allowed her to contribute valuable suggestions for improvingefficiency.
On a personal note, I want to thank Dara for her guidance and wisdom as I transitioned into my current role as Executive Director. Her easygoing nature fostered an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and showing vulnerability, which was essential for me to understand the nuances and intricacies of my position. Her efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly navigating the complexities of relief opportunities, further underscoredherdedication.
So Dara, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for being such an incredible colleague and friend. Your contributions to our organization extend far beyond the operational excellenceyou delivered every day. You are truly the heart andsoulofthe “MYASfamily,” a cornerstone of everything we stand for. Your kindness, dedication, and unwavering positivity make a difference notonlyinourworkbutinthe lives of everyone fortunate enough to know you. We cherish you dearly and are so grateful for all that you do andallthatyouhavedonefor MYAS.

As we move closer to 2025 MYAS Grade State Tournaments, let’s take a minute to reflect on the adventure/task at hand the teams, players, coaches, and fans are about to embark on.
The MYAS Grade State is the highlight of the winter basketball season. It’s also the ultimate measure of progress over a long basketball season. What is your measure of success? For some, it will be hoisting the championship trophy. For others, did we play better defense, did we have better shooting percentages, etc?
That statement is the same for officials as we’re looking to become better at the things we’re doing not only on the court with getting plays/calls correct, but better communication and what we’re doing off the court. It starts with getting into the rule book, taking tests, and watching videos of plays so we have a better understanding of how to call the game of basketball.
Remember, everyone that is a part of the MYAS Grade State Tournament is in a developmental stage of life so if we all play our part, we can have a better experience! Will players miss shots? Yes. Will every play a coach draws up work? No. Will officials miss a call here and there? Yes.
It’s important to remember we all need to gauge or own team, player, coach - and yes, even the officials - success as we all want to develop. Please let’s all do our best to make this year’s MYAS Grade State Tournament a wonderful experience for all!
