The site is right next to the Luxurama Theatre which opened its doors in the early 60s, at the height of apartheid. Built by the late Ronnie Quibell in 1963 in Wynberg, it defied the system by allowing mixed-race audiences before being forced to become a coloureds only venue.

The Lux was bought by Darun Na'im Institute Of Higher Islamic Learning in 2015 to provide additional space for their institution's activities. “Seeing that the neighbouring building carries a significant history and having been acquired with the aim to educate and promote/motivate youth to become passionate about social justice, The project was planned based on bridging the gap between the new film school and the Lux to allow the combined buildings to serve a bigger role.

The Massing has been transferred/adapted from the Luxurama Theatre to keep with the heights and linearity .

Proposed buildings in RED(shown in main publication) are to be improved at present or in future to activate the Precinct. These are buildings that will shape the intersecting roads and the public spaces within. Also shown is the possible massing and the exit points from the Film school.

“As an architect you design for the present, with an awareness of the past, for a future which is essentially unknown. ” – Norman Foster

The SITE analysis shows the panoramic views of the site, the importance of the intersection, entry points, road links and the basic massing next to the LUX.”

Proposed Future Development:

The Lux was bought by Darun Na'im Institute Of Higher Islamic Learning in 2015 to provide additional space for their institution's activities. “The initial precedents intended to triggerthoughts of a social space. Spaces that link, how they are connected and what form of access to adopt.

Particularly the spaces in mind were the auditorium, the exhibition and the cafeteria, that is, how the dialogue between the spaces was created and how they spilled into each other, what kind of spatial separators to use… etc

Thoughts on transparency or open, closed spaces or have perforated dividers between the spaces. Thoughts on acoustics, light and the overall shell(cover) of the perimeter of these spaces combined.

The top levels house the School and the student apartments – Private.

Mid level is the auditorium –Semi-Private.

Lower level is the Exhibition space, Cafeteria, ReceptionPublic.
