Artist in Residence Club

Are you interested in learning advanced art techniques?

This club is hosted by Guest Speaker Ms. Emily Kemp, a highly talented local artist and educator. Youth will have the opportunity to create artwork from various categories: printmaking, monochromatic, pastel, airdry clay and more! Registration is required.

Want to practice speaking Italian with other learners? Care to use your Italian language skills to help others? Meet us in the MWR Library for our monthly Italian Conversation Group! These informal discussions are a chance to discuss topics of interest in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.

Today we will create our own designs on a t-shirt or tote bag using fabric markers and paint. Stencils and other tools will be available and we will provide a few sizes of t-shirts and cotton tote bags. Feel free to bring anything else you would like to decorate!

Sharpen your cooking skills and make a variety of foods at the Youth Complex every Thursday in October. This month, crockpot chicken and dumplings, spooky treats, pumpkin pie, and spooky bell peppers are on the menu. 4-H cooking club is a free program for youth in the teen program so let's get cooking!

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Youth Program families are encouraged to spend quality time together as they carve or decorate pumpkins. Families will need to provide their own tools and decorations. The Youth Complex will provide the pumpkins. The contest will be timed and judges will choose the top three winners. Please register at the Youth Complex by Friday, October 14. Sperlinga, Nicosia & Buffalo Cheese Factory with Beer Tasting

On this walking tour, patrons will have the opportunity to visit the medieval town of Sperlinga and the Norman castle excavated from rocks. Explore the castle built on top of caves that has been inhabited by people since 1080. Climb to the top of the castle and be rewarded with a beautiful view of the surrounding town and countryside. Nicosia’s interesting architecture, both Medieval and Baroque, also offers an impressive number of palaces and churches. This walking tour will be followed by a lunch and 24 Barons beer tasting at the cheese factory, which produces buffalo cheese. Patrons are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Salina Island and Malvasia Wine Tasting

Let's explore Salina from its west to east coast! First, we will explore the village of Pollara, the movie site of Il Postino, before stopping for lunch and wine tasting at a local agriturismo. Next, we’ll drive across the island to Lingua, home to the ancient salt pans. We’ll see the lighthouse in the east and enjoy fresh granita from the famous Da Alfredo restaurant, before walking to Santa Marina Salina for departure. Bring comfortable shoes and a bathing suit.

Walnut Festival in Motta Camastra

Motta Camastra is the biggest producer of walnuts in the area. The festival consists of 6 days dedicated to tastings of typical products obtained from the processing of walnuts. Traveling show entertainers and other products well known in the area including cheese, sausages and more will also be featured.

Siracusa Sights: Ortigia

Take in all the sights of Siracusa on this historical walking tour. First we visit the Byzantine Maniace Castle and learn about dashing Norman knights from long ago. We recommend that you bring small euro bills and coins for shopping as credit cards and large bills are not typically accepted or preferred. Nebrodi Park is a beautiful natural area, off the beaten path near the northern coast of the island. Hike through the woodlands and explore the waterfall of Catafulco. The water at the base creates a natural pool called Marmitta dei Giganit, or Giant’s Marble. The hike is 4.5 km and will take an estimated 3 - 4 hours. Wear long pants and good hiking boots. Make sure you keep an eye out for the famous Sicilian black pigs! After the hike, enjoy some downtime in the town of Zafferana as they celebrate the Ottobrata Festival. Grab lunch and then go through the extensive number of handmade products, craft booths, and food booths that line the streets.

Discover Etna like never before - on 4-wheels! Chestnut Expedition on Mt. Etna - Family Trip

*Children under 12 are free. Bring a reusable bag, old grocery sack, pillowcase or even a backpack and join us on Mt Etna! Chestnut season will be in full swing and we will take this opportunity to get you into the forest to forage for your very own supply. While on the mountain, our guides will roast chestnuts for you to enjoy in the traditional Sicilian fashion and teach you some new things you may not have known about the wild–growing chestnut trees. Patrons are also able to participate in a hike during this expedition, so please wear your boots and some clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. A Sicilian BBQ lunch will be made to enjoy as well.

Spend the day on the north side of Mt. Etna hiking from Rifugio Brunick to Timparossa and then to Lamponi Cave! This challenging and strenuous trail will offer a long day with amazing sights to see along the way. Mid-hike, we will stop at the Timpa Rossa shelter to enjoy our famous Sicilian BBQ for lunch.

Vulcano Island: Walking, Wine & Food

Do you like scary movies?! Join us on the NAS II Turf field for a scream of a good time. Don't forget to bring your own lawn chair or blanket.

Survive the apocalypse by dodging zombies as they try to steal your flag during a 1.5 mile run! Runners will be given a flag belt at the beginning of the run, starting and ending at the Marinai Community Center. Costumes are highly encouraged and monsters, zombies, and creepy creatures of all ages are welcome! Register at sigzombierun22.eventbrite.it.
