Blended Lifeguarding Class Location: NAS I Splashers Pool Starts: 3:00 pm Ages: 16+ Cost: $50 We will be hosting an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Class at the NAS I Splashers Pool March 12-15. This will be a blended learning class. The swim test must be conducted before you are given the online link, and it will consist of a 300-meter swim, a 2-minute water tread, and a timed brick removal. We will have the water skills evaluation March 5 at 3 p.m. at the NAS I Splashers Pool.

Registration will begin March 1 and end March 5.

Hike Ispica Caves Depart: NAS II 7:30 am, Marinai 7:45 am, NAS I 8:00 am Return: 5:00 pm Ages: 12+ Cost: $50 (Includes transportation, local guide and light lunch) The Ispica Caves were inhabited from 2000 BC through the 20th century.

Here's your chance to explore Mediterranean caves that were carved out Hyblean Mountain canyons. During this hike, patrons will descend the canyon to the ancient village and follow the valley along the Busaitone River. Afterward, hikers will cross ancient citrus and carob groves to a rustic farmhouse where a light lunch of local cheese, wine, and other specialties await.

Wine Trekking: Milo Hike & Barone di Villagrande Winery Depart: NAS II 8:00 am, Marinai 8:15 am, NAS I 8:30 am Return: 5:30 pm Ages: 18+ Cost: $65 (Includes transportation, naturalist guide, wine tasting, and lunch) Enjoy a pleasant hike in the forests of Milo, visit a century-old oak tree, and walk along the remains of the depression that formed the Ox Valley. The duration of the hike is 2.5 hours and patrons will be able to see the old lava flow from the Mt Etna eruption of 1982. Afterward, patrons will enjoy a wine tasting and lunch at Barone di Villagrande. This century-old winery has an expansive terrace overlooking the coast of Riposto, all the way up to Taormina.

Peloritan Mountains Women Only Hike (International Women’s Day) Depart: NAS II 8:00 am, Marinai 8:15 am, NAS I 8:30 am Return: 6:30 pm Cost: $60 (Includes transportation, Naturalistic tour guide, and lunch) Happy International Women's Day! Gather your girl squad and throw on your hiking boots since this day is just for the ladies! On March 7, enjoy a visit to Motta Camastra, a 1000-year-old village, located in the Messina province.

Witness the beauty of nature as you walk along the Peloritan Mountains where The Godfather was filmed. Afterward, patrons will have the opportunity to experience some local cuisine.

Family Hike to Piano Dei Grilli Depart: NAS II 8:00 am, Marinai 8:15 am, NAS 1 8:30 am Return: 4:00 pm Cost: $20 adults / $5 ages 2-12 (Includes transportation, BBQ and guide) Join Community Recreation for a family hike in Piano dei Grilli! We recommend patrons wear warm, waterproof clothing and bring plenty of water with them.

Wine Trekking: Lava Hike & Gambino Winery Depart: NAS II 8:00 am, Marinai 8:15 am, NAS I 8:30 am Return: 5:00 pm Ages: 18+ Cost: $60 (Includes transportation, naturalist guide, lunch, and wine tasting) Get a chance to see the eastern side of Mt. Etna and the lava flow from 2002 with a hike through the beautiful woods surrounding the Gambino Winery. Following the hike, we will enjoy a tour of the winery with a unique opportunity to get a better understanding of what the local natural environment offers to the community. You will be able to choose the meat or vegetarian option at registration for a light lunch. Important: There will be a piece of the path with some bouldering that will require balance to jump from one space to another on lava rock, therefore hiking boots/shoes are required.

Catania Fishing Trip Depart: NAS II 5:30 am, Marinai 5:45 am, NAS 6:00 am Return: 3:00 pm Age: 16+ Cost: $120 (Includes transportation, breakfast, fishing equipment and guide) On this tour designed for anglers, you’ll fish in waters up to 50 meters with an experienced fisherman. Be sure to bring light layers, a jacket to keep dry, drinking water, and some snacks. If you would like to purchase additional food, please bring euro. Due to limited space, seats are extremely limited.

Mountain Bike Simeto River Depart: NAS II 10:00 am, Marinai 10:15 am, NAS I 10:30 am Return: 5:00 pm Ages: 16+ Cost: $40 (Includes transportation, gear, BBQ and guide) Enjoy a flat, 23-mile ride along the Simeto River, which just happens to be one of the largest rivers in Sicily. This day trip will begin near NAS I and end at the Simeto River Natural Reserve. This natural oasis offers a rare chance to see migrating birds, including flamingos on their route to Africa. The ride will take approximately 4 hours to complete, with a break for a typical Sicilian BBQ. Wear clothes that can get dirty, and be sure to bring water and snacks.

Queloni Miller Recreation Assistant - Liberty Queloni has been the backbone of the Liberty program this past year. Since joining the MWR team in 2020, "Q" has dove head first into her role.

Her dedication to serving our service members has made her an invaluable asset to the team. Her flexibility and willingness to take on additional responsibility has allowed MWR to keep the Liberty Center open during an unconventional year with extreme staff shortages. On top of her hard work, Q's laid back and friendly attitude makes every day at the Liberty Center a fun and inviting place for staff and patrons to enjoy.

Writing Series Location: Chart Room Time: 9:30 - 11:30 am Cost: $35 Sign up By: February 25 Join MWR for our new Creative Writing Series, beginning March 1! This is a workshop-style writing class with a focus on creative writing. Topics covered in this series will include, Poetry and Emotional Intelligence, Poetry Styles, Elements of the Short Story, and basic writing tools (e.g., vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation). Participants should come prepared with paper, pencils or pens, and an eagerness to write. Peer review will be used throughout the session. The writing series will be held every other Monday, March 1 - April 26, beginning March 1.
