Lava Rock Ceramic Painting Class Depart: Youth Complex 9:00 am Return: 3:00 pm Cost: $35 (Permission slips and registration due: Friday, March 24) A professional lava rock artist has invited us into her Nicolosi laboratory for painting classes! Each person will have their own project to work on with the help of Artist Tania. She will show us different processes of preparing the lava rock into a ceramic piece ready to paint, which then takes about 72 hours to “fire”.

This is an exciting Sicilian opportunity you don’t want to miss!

Last month, the team thought of ideas for upcoming community service projects and this month will finalize plans for our overnight lock-in and plan the next outdoor recreation field trip.

Begin near NAS I and end at the Simeto River Natural Reserve. The natural oasis offers a rare chance to see migrating birds, including flamingos on their route to Africa. The trip will take approximately four hours to complete, with a break for a typical Sicilian BBQ. Please wear clothes that can get dirty, and be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks.

Etna hiking to Timpa Rossa and then to Lamponi Cave! This challenging and strenuous trail will offer a long day with amazing sights to see along the way. Following the hike, enjoy a light BBQ lunch during a break at a Timparossa shelter. Make sure to bring comfortable shoes, layered clothing and plenty of water and snacks.

Floristella Hike & Agriturismo Grotta Calda Depart: NAS II 7:30 am, Marinai 7:45 am, NAS I 8:00 am Return: 5:00 pm Cost: $60 (Includes transportation, guide and lunch) A guide will take you through an old sulfur mine and explain the historical significance to the island on this 5-mile hike through the beautiful Floristella Park in the Enna province of Sicily. Afterward, enjoy a typical Sicilian meal at Agriturismo Grotta Calda.

Vulcano Island: Walking & Wine Tour Depart: NAS II 5:30 am, Marinai 5:45 am, NAS I 6:00 am Return: 10:00 pm Cost: $110 (Includes transportation, guide, wine tasting and light lunch) Take in the sights of the island while you are transported to a winery in the heart of Vulcano. You will be surrounded by Malvasia grapes and views of the sea while you tour the vineyards. Afterward, walk along the coast to explore the most ancient church and lighthouse on the island.

Mt Bike in Plemmiro Natural Reserve Depart: NAS II 7:30 am, Marinai 7:45 am, NAS I 8:00 am Return: 5:00 pm Ages: 16+ Cost: $55 (Includes transportation, guide, bike rental and street food lunch) Feel the breeze on your face as we ride along the coast in Siracusa’s Plemmerio Natural Reserve. We will pedal through 12 km of natural wonders and historical areas, and finish our day with lunch in Ortigia.

Introduction to Mountain Biking Class Time: 4:00 - 5:00 pm Cost: $20 (Includes instruction, guide and equipment rental) This hour-long instruction covers everything from the different kinds of mountain bikes to basic maintenance and techniques for riding. The class begins at the Community Recreation Office on NAS I and patrons can practice riding around different isolated areas on the base.

Bronte “Piano dei Grilli” Family Hike and Street Food Depart: NAS II 6:30 am, Marinai 6:45 am, NAS I 7:00 am Return: 6:00 pm Cost: $50 (Includes transportation, guide, and street food. Bring comfortable shoes, water and snacks) This excursion will cover a 7.5-mile trail around the northwest area of Mt. Etna. This is an exceptional way to experience the mountain’s flora and fauna, which highlights the pistachio groves, lava clearing and trees blooming beautiful yellow flowers. After hiking, we will stop in the town of Bronte for some pistachio, arancini, and more. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks for the hike.

Family Day: Cooking Experience & Alcantara Park Depart: NAS II 8:30 am, Marinai 8:45 am, NAS I 9:00 am Return: 6:00 pm Cost: $65/Children 12 & under - Free (Includes transportation, guide, cooking class and lunch) Join us in Motta Camastra for this cooking experience where there is a role for everyone. Before lunch, the ladies of Le Mamme del Borgo will instruct the adults how to make maccheroni pasta while the children make cookies. After lunch, you’ll visit Alcantara Park to see the infamous Alacantara Gorges.

Descend Taormina Stairs & Lemon Farm Lunch Depart: NAS II 8:00 am, Marinai 8:15 am, NAS I 8:30 am Return: 4:30 pm Cost: $60 (Includes transportation, guide and lunch at Lemon Farm) Descend more than 1,000 stairs for spectacular views of Mt. Etna and the Ionian Sea. This hike will start near Castelmola, continue through Madonna della Rocca and end in the town of Taormina. After the descent, we will go to a local lemon farm to have lunch. Please remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, snacks and sunglasses.

Mt. Sartorius Family Hike & BBQ Depart: NAS II 8:00 am, Marinai 8:15 am, NAS I 8:30 am Return: 5:00 pm Cost: $40 Adults/Children 15 & under - Free (Includes transportation, guide and BBQ lunch) Join us for a hike through the forested slopes of Mt. Etna North (Mt Sartorius). This trip is easy to moderate intensity and children must be able to hike trail terrain for 1-2 hours (2.5/ 3 miles). See one of the oldest conifer forests in Sicily, with trees from 200-300 years old, and seven of Etna’s extinct volcanic craters all in one hike! Afterward, enjoy a Sicilian BBQ lunch.

Please remember to bring water, snacks and layered clothes.

Hike Ispica Caves Depart: NAS II 7:30 am, Marinai 7:45 am, NAS I 8:00 am Return: 5:00 pm Cost: $50 (Includes transportation, local guide and light lunch) The Ispica Caves, hand-carved out of the canyon, were inhabited from 2000 BC through the 20th Century in the Hyblean Mountains. Tour this paradise of rock, sun and Mediterranean vegetation as you descend the canyon to the ancient village along the Busaitone River. Along the way, keep your eyes open for clues to how the inhabitants lived. Finish the day at a rustic farmhouse where a light lunch of local cheese, wine and other specialties await.
