A professional lava rock artist has invited us into her Nicolosi laboratory for painting classes! Each person will have their own project to work on with the help of Artist Tania. She will show us different processes of preparing the lava rock into a ceramic piece ready to paint, which then takes about 72 hours to “fire”. This is an exciting Sicilian opportunity you don’t want to miss! Registration required, spots are limited.

Last month, the team thought of ideas for upcoming community service projects and this month will finalize plans for our overnight lock-in and plan the next outdoor recreation field trip.

Enjoy a flat, 23-mile ride along the Simeto River, the main river of Sicily. Begin near NAS I and end at the Simeto River Natural Reserve. The trip will take approximately four hours to complete, with a break for a typical Sicilian BBQ. Please wear clothes that can get dirty, and be sure to bring plenty of water

This excursion will cover a 7.5-mile trail around the northwest area of Mt. Etna. This is an exceptional way to experience the mountain’s flora and fauna, which highlights the pistachio groves, lava clearing and trees blooming beautiful yellow flowers. After hiking, we will stop in the town of Bronte for some pistachio, arancini, and more. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks for the hike.

The Ispica Caves, hand-carved out of the canyon, were inhabited from 2000 BC through the 20th Century in the Hyblean Mountains. Tour this paradise of rock, sun and Mediterranean vegetation as you descend the canyon to the ancient village along the Busaitone River. Along the way, keep your eyes open for clues to how the inhabitants lived. Finish the day at a rustic farmhouse where a light lunch of local cheese, wine and other specialties await.

Join us in Motta Camastra for this cooking experience where there is a role for everyone. Before lunch, the ladies of Le Mamme del Borgo will instruct the adults how to make maccheroni pasta while the children make cookies. Mt. Sartorius Family Hike & BBQ

Join us for a hike through the forested slopes of Mt. Etna North (Mt Sartorius). This trip is easy to moderate intensity and children must be able to hike trail terrain for 1-2 hours (2.5/ 3 miles). See one of the oldest conifer forests in Sicily, with trees from 200-300 years old, and seven of Etna’s extinct volcanic craters all in one hike! Afterward, enjoy a Sicilian BBQ lunch. Please remember to bring water, snacks and layered clothes.
Are you ready to tackle Mt. Etna? Join us as we ascend 3000 meters (or more) up the mountain to enjoy the view of Sicily! This 8-hour, round-trip hike will take participants to the maximum hiking threshold based on the daily condition of volcanic activity. Due to the nature of the trip, there are a very limited number of spots.

E1-E6, Active Duty Military or Unaccompanied Military. All programs are held at the Liberty Center on NAS II unless otherwise stated.
