Sigonella remembers the Battle of Midway in June. The Premier Library is featuring books and photos about this World War II battle in 1942. This engagement effectively deterred Japan’s naval strength by destroying four of its aircraft carriers. Japan’s navy never recovered and was left on the defensive until the end of the war.

This important event celebrates the Virgin Mary, protector of Enna. Located in the center of the island, Enna is the heart of Sicily, with deep roots that blend tradition with ancient mythology. Enna’s mountaintop position offers a panoramic view of Sicily’s rugged interior, which produces much of the grain used to produce pasta eaten all over Italy.

Also visit Enna’s cathedral and the Lombardi Castle, a great historical example of military architecture in Sicily.

Midway through the hike, there will be a stop for a Sicilian BBQ lunch at the shelter, Rifugio Galvarina. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water, some snacks to eat along the way, layers (cotton not recommended), and a camera. Backpack rentals available, inquire at time of reservation.

As part of Sigonella MWR’s continuous effort to provide our customers with the best service possible, we are excited to present the new sigmwr.com on June 2nd. The new website features a more user-friendly interface that allows our customers to find information more quickly and easily. Customers now have the ability to subscribe to a customizable weekly newsletter that allows them to receive regular updates on MWR events in which they are interested.

In addition, customers have the ability to contact MWR directly from the website further opening lines of communication. Like always, the weekly fitness and movie schedules are easily accessible from the website’s side bar. The new website also has the added feature of a monthly calendar allowing for an easy snap shot of what events occur on specific dates throughout the month. It is available on a variety of electronic devices including smartphones, tablets, computers, and televisions.

MWR continues to work diligently to provide Sigonella with quality programming to create a memorable tour here in Sicily. We are confident that our new website will aid in allowing our community to take full advantage of all MWR has to offer.
