Teen Programs

In order to participate, please enroll in our Youth Program by coming into the Youth Complex or calling 624-1750 for more information. Members must be 11 years old and have started the 6th grade to 18 years of age and still in high school.

WEDNESDAYS & FRIDAYS

Artist in Residence Club

Location: Youth Complex Time: 4:00 - 6:00 pm

This club is hosted by Guest Speaker Ms. Emily Kemp, a highly talented local artist and educator. This month's theme is winter landscapes. Registration is required. This opportunity will be every Wednesday (course instruction) and Friday (open studio) in January.

Club

This month we will be cooking food alternatives including gluten-free, dairy-free and meat-free options. 4-H cooking club is a free program for youth in the teen program so let’s get cooking!

High School students will have the facility to themselves for video games, pool, movies, snacks, art, instruments, and more. Teens registered in the program are allowed to sponsor high-school guests for this event.

Join us for storytime at the MWR Library! Every session is designed to be fun and aid in the development of your child’s early literacy skills. Children and caregivers participate in stories and activities based on a different theme every week.

Stop by today and make your own warm and fuzzy coozies for hot winter drinks using felt and other decorative accents. Totally reusable, you will save paper and have your own personalized cup every time!

Join us to continue our Dungeons and Dragons campaign. Try your luck at the roleplaying game where everyone works together to create a fun story and start your next grand adventure. It's fun to get lost in this imaginative and creative game and it is a great excuse to spend time with your friends!

BGCA Keystone Club

Child and Youth Program (CYP) is hosting a Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BCGA) Keystone Club! This Keystone Club provides leadership development opportunities to Sigonella teens, ages 14-18. Teens participate in activities in four focus areas, including Academic Success, Career Preparation, Community Service, Teen Outreach.

The snow is here and we are ready! Registered members of the Youth Complex can join us for our trip to Mt. Etna for a fun-filled day of snowboarding. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing since it will be very cold. Be sure to stop by and grab a permission slip and waiver. Registered teens will need to be fit for gear at ITT by January 9.

Orange Harvesting & Lunch at Borgo Antico Agriturismo

Depart: NAS II 8:00 am, Marinai 8:15 am, NAS I 8:30 am Return: 4:30 pm Cost: $65 (Includes transportation, lunch & orange harvesting) Borgo Antico Agriturismo will be our host for an orange harvest! The unique blood oranges grown in Sicily thrive after a hard cold snap and produce deliciously sweet fruit. Each participant will be able to take home oranges so be sure to bring a grocery bag for your treats. Lunch will follow the harvest. Bring water and mud-proof boots and wear clothes you are ok with getting dirty.

Sortino and Fresh Ricotta Cheese Depart: NAS II 7:00 am, Marinai 7:15 am, NAS I 7:30 am Return: 4:30 pm Cost: $60 (Includes transportation, guide, light lunch, cheese tasting, olive oil tasting, and entrance fees for the museum) Take a walking tour of the town of Sortino, the location of the Sicilian Puppet Museum known for the Sicilian, French and Arab knights puppets of the Carolingian period. The area of Sortino is also famous for its honey named "The Iblei Honey" told by Roman poet Virgilio. Light lunch with a tasting of honey, fresh and aged ricotta, olive oil, and pizzolo will be served. This trip will also include a local oil mill as well as a visit to a sheep farm to see and taste fresh ricotta and other dairy specialties typical of the area.

Let's head to the mainland! Hop on a ferry for a ride across the Strait of Messina to the beautiful castle-studded city of Scilla! Following the tour of Scilla, we will stop in Reggio Calabria for the chance to see two rare and stunning Greek bronze statues discovered in an ancient shipwreck!

Take in all the sights of Siracusa on this historical walking tour. First, visit the Byzantine Maniace Castle and learn about dashing Norman knights from long ago. Then, move along to visit other important landmarks around Ortigia Island including St Giovanni Catacombs, the Cathedral, the Temple of Athena and the mythological Fontana di Aretusa. After the walking tour, relax and enjoy lunch at Trattoria Fiorentina. Please choose a seafood, meat, or vegetarian/vegan meal at the time of registration.

What better way to end your week than enjoying history and shopping as we head to Palermo for the day! Discover the baroque side of Palermo and the sites that make it so beautiful. Visit Palazzo Mirto, the Churches of San Salvatore and Gesù and the Politeama Square. After our guided tour is complete, spend time shopping or exploring in town.

Agrigento: Valley of the Temples & Lunch

Originally founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C., Agrigento became one of the leading cities in the Mediterranean world. The town of Agrigento is known for its spectacular Valley of Temples and the sacred area of ancient Akragas which is one of the most important colonies of the Greek Empire. Join us for a tour of Agrigento's Valley of the Temples, followed by lunch at local restaurant in San Leone Beach. Please choose between the meat or fish option upon registration.

Lemon Farm, “The Timpa” and Lunch Depart: NAS II 8:30 am, Marinai 8:45 am, NAS I 9:00 am Return: 5:00 pm Cost: $75 (Includes transportation, guide and lunch) Walk along the Timpa, a natural cliff created from the movement of one of the biggest faults in eastern Sicily. The path we will walk along was used for centuries by locals, to carry flour and fish to Acireale from the sea of Santa Maria la Scala. See spectacular views of Catania and Taormina along the way. The trip will culminate at a local lemon farm where lunch will be made from traditional local entrees and sweets. Afterward, you will enjoy a freshly made batch of granita from a local granita master.

Peloritan Mountains Hike Depart: NAS II 8:00 am, Marinai 8:15 am, NAS I 8:30 am Return: 6:30 pm Cost: $60 (includes transportation, guide and lunch) Enjoy a visit to the 1000-year-old town of Motta Camastra, located in the Messina province. Witness the beauty of nature as we hike along the Peloritan Mountains where The Godfather was filmed. Afterward, there will be an opportunity to experience some extraordinary local food, homegrown and hand-made by the local villagers! You won't want to miss their famous walnut pesto arancino!

Vulcano Island: Walking, Wine & Food Depart: NAS II 5:30 am, Marinai 5:45 am, NAS I 6:00 am Return: 10:00 pm Cost: $100 (Includes transportation, guide and wine tasting) On this walking wine tour of Il Soffio Sulle Eolie, take in the sights of Vulcano Island. You will be surrounded by Malvasia grapes and views of the sea from the winery terrace. Afterwards, hop on a van to explore the most ancient church and lighthouse of the island, walk along the coast and visit the local town.

Cost: $130 per person (double occupancy)(includes transportation, guide, quad fees for 3 hours and lunch at a restaurant) Discover Etna like never before - on 4-wheels! Hold on as we tour the south side of Etna by quad, viewing everything that makes her so special, including explosive craters and caves, lava flows, charming old buildings and expansive green forests. This ride will be one for the books! Please note, all drivers must have a valid U.S. Driver’s License. (The equivalent of an Italian B or B1 Motorcycle license). All quads will be double occupancy.

Although Shatina is a newer Child and Youth Programs employee, she has been a rockstar at the CDC these past few months. CYP had its unannounced CNIC inspection in November, and Shatina was recognized by the inspectors as a model staff who showed tremendous patience and support to the children she was working with. She had such great interactions, they thought she was a primary educator in the room. Her enthusiastic attitude and readiness to always lend a hand, whether by being ready to clock in early or stay late to help the center ensure ratios are maintained, are just some of the reasons she deserves this award. Family Sledding Day on Mt. Etna

Join MWR for a snowy adventure on Mt. Etna that the whole family can enjoy! Sled all day until your heart is content and then warm up with a cup of hot chocolate to round out the day. Make sure to dress warmly in your finest snow gear!

Discover Alkantara Valley like never before on 4-wheels! Hold on as we tour this volcanic valley, viewing everything that makes it so special - explosive craters, volcanic prismatic formation and charming old buildings with vineyards, where Nerello Mascalese (DOC wine) was cultivated before the Greeks arrived in Sicily. Admire the picturesque winter scenery while covering 4-5 miles of moderately difficult terrain at high elevation as we travel to the Galverina Shelter. Here, we will kick back and warm up with a traditional, Sicilian BBQ lunch. Please be sure to wear waterproof boots and warm winter attire (layers recommended) and don’t forget to bring water!
