In order to participate, please enroll in our Youth Program by coming into the Youth Complex or calling 624-1750 for more information. Members must be 11 years old and have started the 6th grade to 18 years of age and still in high school.

Artist in Residence Club

This month’s art will celebrate the Month of the Military Child. Come join Ms. Maddie to make friendship bracelets, use the military child’s color, purple, to create monochrome art and make a handprint collage while learning about the different places your peers have lived!

Location: Youth Complex Time: 5:00 - 6:00 pm
Sharpen your cooking skills and make a variety of foods at the Youth Complex every Thursday. This month we will have Cooking Club in collaboration with our Thursday Family Events. We will be making Ice cream for the ice cream bar, setting up a popcorn bar, getting creative with a trail mix blend, and cooking breakfast for our families to indulge in!

Celebrate Month of the Military Child with Community Recreation during one of our kids-only climbing sessions. Our staff will teach the basics of climbing including how to properly warm-up, safely climb and effective techniques for successful climbing. No experience is necessary; we will require at least one parent to be present throughout the class. Please register at Community Recreation by the day before the class.

We will stop for an Italian panini in town before being transported by bus to the town of Bronte for a pistachio arancini. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes for this trip.

Cost: $45 (Includes transportation, guide and street food) On this southern Sicilian adventure, we will start by taking a moderately difficult hike through the Plemmirio Natural Reserve stretching from the Port of Ortigia through to the south side of Siracusa. This 10 km coastline, offers natural and WWII historical experiences, as well as well-known agro-food companies. Following the hike, we will stop in Ortigia for street food.

Reccomened Age: 18+ Enjoy a mild hike through the woods surrounding the Gambino Winery. This is a great way to see the western side of Mt. Etna and the lava flow from 2002. Afterward, patrons will tour the Gambino vineyards for a unique opportunity to better understand the natural Sicilian environment and all its offerings. Following the guided tour, patrons will enjoy lunch and a wine tasting.

Ages: 16+ Cost: $135 (Includes fees, transportation and local guides. Bring water and euro for food) Join us as we ascend 3000 meters (or more) up the mountain to enjoy the view of Sicily! This 8-hour, round-trip hike will take participants to the maximum hiking threshold based on the daily condition of volcanic activity. Due to the nature of the trip, there are a very limited number of spots.

Start the day with a hike from Mojo Crater to the ruins of Byzantine Churches (600 A.D.) and the Alcantara River. Choose to walk along the river, or better yet, dip your toes in! After the hike, the modern Cotta Nera Winery will provide lunch made from homemade pasta, local cheeses, sweets, and of course, wine.

Introduction to Mountain Biking Class

This hour-long instruction covers everything from the different kinds of mountain bikes to basic maintenance and techniques for riding. The class begins at the Community Recreation Office on NAS I and patrons can practice riding around different isolated areas on the base.

Hold on as we tour this volcanic valley, viewing everything that makes it so special - explosive craters, volcanic prismatic formation and charming old buildings with vineyards, where Nerello Mascalese (DOC wine) was cultivated before the Greeks arrived in Sicily. This ride will be one for the books! All drivers must have a valid US Driver’s License (the equivalent of an Italian B or B1 Motorcycle license).
Celebrate Month of the Military Child with Community Recreation and make pizza from scratch! Start your day on the Lemon Farm, in Pozzillo, as we prepare the dough and stone oven with wood and fire. While the dough levitates, we will take a walking tour to the harbor to learn about the geology and lifestyle of the local fisherman town. Back at the Lemon Farm, we will prepare all ingredients and learn the steps to making the perfect homemade pizza.

Hike to the top of Mt. Pomiciaro for breathtaking views of Mt. Etna’s summit crater and the expansive Valle del Bove! Following the hike, enjoy a tasting of Etna wine and Sicilian cuisine at Barone di Villagrande Winery. Please remember to bring hiking shoes, plenty of water, snacks and layers (cotton not recommended) to fuel this strenuous hike and keep warm.

The moon is full and the night is young! Join Liberty for this moonlit adventure on the volcano. This moderate 2-hour hike will overlook old and new lava flows, and if we are lucky, we might even see lava running!
