Sauk Centre Welcomes You!

Stop By...Stay Awhile

W

elcome to Sauk Centre! Whether you’re new to the area or have been around for awhile, I’d like to invite you to experience everything Sauk Centre has to offer. I see Sauk Centre as having five major assets: location, retail, facilities, the Lake Wobegon Trail and last, but not least, Sinclair Lewis. Alone, some of these assets may not be strong enough to consider Sauk Centre a destination. Combined, however, they create a pretty impressive package! Location – centrally located in the State of Minnesota, Sauk Centre provides access to three major roadways: I-94, Hwy. 71 and State Hwy. 28. Retail – we have a diverse group of retailers in Sauk Centre. There aren’t many things you can’t find here. This guide does a great job of showcasing our retail businesses

and what they have to offer. Facilities – our Civic Arena, Main Street Theatre, the Stearns County Fairgrounds, medical campus, seven city parks, public & private schools, the MN National Guard Armory, the library, hotels/motels/campgrounds, lakes and golf courses are all fabulous gems in Sauk Centre’s crown. The Lake Wobegon Trail – Sauk Centre is the largest city on the trail and statistics show over 100,000 people used it yearly. And finally, Mr. Sinclair Lewis. Each year we welcome people from all around the world to learn about, visit and cross him off their bucket list. The museum and boyhood home are like the cherries on top of Sauk Centre. Feel free to contact the Chamber of Commerce for more information on any of Sauk Centre’s assets. Call 320.352.5201, e-mail andrea@saukcentrechamber.com, or www.saukcentrechamber.com

Why is Lewis Important?

Visit the Sinclair Lewis Boyhood Home and Sinclair Lewis Museum Every year, over 8,000 people from all over the world tour the Sinclair Lewis Museum. In addition, over 500 tour the Sinclair Lewis Boyhood Home. Sinclair Lewis, the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Sauk Centre on Feb. 7,1885, and raised here. The town

was his inspiration for Main Street, the satirical novel of small-town life that brought him worldwide fame. The home, located at 810 Sinclair Lewis Ave., which also for a time served as the office for Dr. Lewis’ medical practice, has been restored with antiques appropriate to the period. Many rooms contain items that were known to belong to the Lewis family. Tour guides can tell you much about the house, Lewis’ family and boyhood. The home is open June - August for guided tours. Call the Chamber at 320352-5201 for daily hours. Admission charged. The museum is located at 1220 Main St. S. Call 320-352-5201 or visit us at www.sinclairlewisfoundation.com.

“It was a good time, a good place, and a good preparation for life.” Sinclair Lewis - commenting on life in Sauk Centre. Page 14 • 2014 Sauk Centre Visitors Guide

“Critics praised him, claiming that his writing represented the culture of the 1920s and 1930s. Mark Schorer, in his exhaustive biography, notes regarding Lewis’s work, ‘American culture seems always to have had a literary spokesman, a single writer who presented American culture and American attitudes toward its culture, to the world.’ Lewis was that author. The titles of two of his novels, Main Street and Babbitt, were introduced into the American vocabulary. These words developed their own cultural meanings.” Dr. Sally E. Parry of the Sinclair Lewis Society

About the Nobel Prize

For literature, the academy only considers works that have appeared in print and have been proven by the “test of experience” and examination of experts. An author is chosen for the award not for one book but for a body of works. The five works that Sinclair Lewis was awarded the Nobel Prize for include: Elmer Gantry, Babbitt, Dodsworth, Arrowsmith and Main Street. In 1930, Sinclair Lewis became the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

MINNESOTA HOME SCHOOL FOR GIRLS PROPERTY National Registry of Historic Districts Description courtesy of www.placeography.org/ and www.mnhs.org-shpo Located on the north end of Sauk Centre, this property is now the Eagle’s Healing Nest, a home for soldiers trying to reintegrate into society. It was established in 1907 by an act of the legislature as the State Industrial School for Girls, to provide for the care, training and education of girls who had been declared delinquent and committed by the courts. The school was built in 1911 as the Minnesota Home School for Girls. Architect Clarence H. Johnston, Sr. incorporated Colonial and Classical Revival elements into the buildings. The school facility then included an administration building, hospital, chapel, pumping plant, farm building, and cottages to house 160 girls. Girls who had been inmates at the State Training School for Boys, later the Red Wing State Training School, were transferred to the facility. All of the policies of the State Training School in Red Wing relating to inmate commitment, education, training and general operations were applied to the Home School for Girls as well. Girls were committed when convicted by the court of any crime, except that of murder, which was punishable by imprisonment. Entering inmates ranged in age from eight to sixteen years, and remained at the school until they reached age twenty-one, or were discharged. Girls received common school education and instruction in sewing, cooking, laundering, general housework skills and farming. The buildings on the property considered as having historical significance include the Alcott Cottage; the Richard Cottage; the Stowe Cottage; the Sullivan Cottage; Morse Hall; the chapel; Lind Cottage; Sinclair Lewis Hall; Evers Cottage; the equipment garage; the horse barn; the machine shed; Mary Lyon Annex; Mary Lyon School; Pettit Cottage; the maintenance building; the chapel garage; the lake cottage; and the root cellar. Other buildings include the fine arts building; the Tekakitha Cottage; the DuBois Cottage; Senator Popp Building; the bungalow garage; and the storage garage.

Fun on the Lakes

Sauk Centre offers the best in lake recreation, whether it is canoeing down the Sauk River, tubing or water skiing on Fairy Lake, or fishing for bass and walleye on Sauk Lake. Not many small towns can offer such a variety of options for lake enthusiasts. Fairy Lake is home of Fairy Lake Beach and Lions Park and is a popular spot for beach goers, water skiers and jet skiers. The fishing isn’t too shabby either and produces panfish, walleye and northern. The Sauk River is located below the dam in Sauk Centre and is a popular spot for anglers as well as canoers. And then there is Sauk Lake, one of the best bass lakes in Minnesota. Every year trophy-sized bass are caught on Sauk Lake, which is home to an every-otheryear bass fishing tournament. But bass isn’t the only species this large body of water produces. The lake is also a good panfish lake with a good crappie and sunfish bite. The crappies are especially strong in the winter months, and Sauk Lake is a popular spot for anglers to plant their ice shacks. The walleye bite has also improved thanks to a stocking effort several years ago. And there are plenty of trophy northern swimming along the channels. It is not uncommon for an angler to pull a 15- to 20-pound fish out of the Sauk Lake waters. There are several resorts on Sauk Lake that are clean, affordable and friendly. So if you are planning a vacation where you’d like to have the best of recreation and angling, Sauk Centre is the place to be.

Did You Know? There are numerous lakes in the area that provide ample opportunities for all types of water recreation in summer and fishing year round. • Big Sauk Lake is a dynamite lake for anglers. It is the Sauk Centre area’s largest lake, beginning in Sauk Centre and running 10 miles north. The Sauk River Dam is located just off Main Street north of downtown and serves as a popular fishing destination for anglers. • Fairy Lake Chain – Located four-and-a-half miles northwest of Sauk Centre, this chain of lakes consists of Fairy Lake, Lily Lake and Long Lake. This chain serves as a popular spot for water sports, and includes the area’s nicest beach for swimming. The fishing is good on these lakes as well. • Guernsey Lake Chain – Another hot spot for anglers, this chain is 6 miles north of Sauk Centre and consists of Guernsey Lake, Long Bridge Lake, Long Lake, Juergens Lake and McCormick Lake.
