Flight of the Butterflies OCTOBER 3 – DECEMBER 19 See the film, feel the flutter. Immerse your students in the true story of a scientist’s 40-year journey to solve the mystery of the monarch butterflies’ overwintering site in the remote mountains of Mexico. The Flight of the Butterflies film takes you along on the monarchs’ awe-inspiring, cross-continental journey. Students will learn about this tiny marvel of nature that weighs less than a penny, yet makes one of the longest migrations on Earth.

Meet the stars of the movie at our Butterfly House.

Get up close and personal with local and tropical butterflies.

DESIGN ZONE EXHIBITION October 15–December 19 What does it take to create a video game, line up rhythms like the best DJs, or design a roller coaster? In Design Zone, your students can see how creative problem solvers use math to accomplish these amazing tasks. BIG WEATHER EXPERIENCE PACKAGE INCLUDES:

The perfect storm of learning and fun! The Big Weather

• Tornado Alley Omnitheater film

Experience, best suited for grades 3-8, focuses on the science of weather—in a big way. A highlight of the package is the Storms on Stage performance by our Science Live Theatre group. Students love to watch the weather drama unfold as actors make clouds, lightning and thunder, a tornado, and a rainbow right on our auditorium stage.

The package also includes Tornado Alley, the Omnitheater film that takes you inside a tornado with a team from the Discovery Channel TV show Storm Chasers, and travels along with the VORTEX 2 research team as they collect data that can save lives in the path of storms. Students also explore gallery exhibits that examine wind, clouds, storms, the sun, atmosphere, and air flow.

SCIENCE LIVE THEATRE Did you know that the Science Museum of Minnesota was an innovator in the use of live theater as a humanizing interpretive tool? Our troupe of actors is ready to entertain and teach your students. On any given day we have more than a dozen performances, many of which are tied to the special exhibitions. What does the future hold for humans and space travel? Journey to Space, a special exhibition and Omnitheater film, is a one-of-a-kind experience that seeks to answer that question and more by exploring the challenges of living and working in space. Unlike traditional space exhibits that focus on the history of space travel, Journey to Space looks into current and future exploration and what is possible.

Students, get ready for the future. Cell Lab Don a lab coat, gloves, and goggles, and perform science experiments using real lab equipment. Computerguided workstations lead students through a variety of experiments exploring topics in cellular, molecular, and microbiology.

Future Earth A giant, animated globe demonstrates how 7 billion humans are changing the planet. This display prompts thinking about solutions to earth’s challenges. Hands-on activities focus on ocean acidity, the atmosphere, and energy.

Supercharge your students’ science curiosity. Invite the Science Museum to your school.

Assemblies are a fun, highenergy, high-impact way to introduce or review core science concepts. Designed for large groups of up to 250 students, assemblies involve students directly. Student volunteers participate with props and demonstrations throughout the presentations. Program content and lengths are tailored to grade level: 40 minutes for K-2 and 50 minutes for grades 3-5. With the new emphasis on engineering standards, our elementary school engineering assemblies are growing in popularity.

Introduce and reinforce new science topics The Science Museum’s in-depth residencies can be a one-day visit or up to four days. Residencies create an opportunity for students to dive deeper into hands-on science. Engineering is Elementary (EiE) is a research-based, academic standardsbased curriculum and professional development for educators. It is designed to integrate science and technology concepts with elementary school engineering lessons. Teachers gain effective teaching techniques and students make important learning connections.

EiE was developed by the Museum of Science, Boston. Over the past four years, the Science Museum of Minnesota has worked with nearly 500 teachers to implement EiE programs in more than 50 schools in the Upper Midwest.

EiE Immersion Residencies take place in your classroom, requiring just seven to eight hours over two weeks. Our high-quality instructors do all the planning, model effective techniques in your classroom, and offer you tips and ideas. Students enjoy having a special instructor and fun, hands-on sessions.

Check out these gains in member districts where we’ve worked: • Cedar Park STEM Magnet in Apple Valley, with 53% students of color, advanced from 23% proficient in science in 2008 to 58% in 2011.

The gain was concurrent with three years of professional development programming.

• Glacier Hills Arts and Science Magnet in Eagan, with 38% students of color and 31% on Free/Reduced Lunch (F/RL), advanced from 33% proficient in science in 2008 to 73% in 2011.

• Fifth graders in Richfield, with 63% students of color and 47% students on F/RL, advanced from 16% proficient in science in 2010 to 40% in 2012.

We do this by providing customized services for teachers and district leaders—institutes, workshops, and seminars—that translate the best research-based approaches and theory into classroom practice. Science House is also a place where teachers can find the best hands-on STEM materials for use in the classroom.

Kelly grew up in Mound, Minnesota, and earned her Masters in Education in curriculum and instruction from the University of Minnesota. After working in the Minneapolis Public Schools for two years, she taught science in Arizona for seven years. She returned to Minnesota with a dream of working in an informal learning setting and became a Science Museum instructor. Kelly was a team member in our EiE program before she became our school liaison.
