From the desk of The Executive Director

This past May, we welcomed participants and donors from a remarkable 126 zip codes and 20 different states to celebrate what it means to be a healthy community at our 17th Annual Walk the Walk for Mental Health. Our communities rallied to support the access to therapy we provide in our Counseling Center by enjoying the colorful walk and health expo. We are so grateful to the walkers, volunteers, community advocates, donors, and sponsors for making it a wonderful morning-thank you. Your efforts raised funds to provide hundreds of healing therapy sessions to our community’s young people.

The Community House offers more than 600 programs, activities, and services annually. Sometimes people ask me how the same organization can provide recreational sports leagues, science classes, theater, access to sliding scale therapy, visual arts, outreach programming to local under-resourced families, and be gathering space for many clubs, philanthropic organizations, and personal events. To me, it all ties together so well. People are strengthened when they have access to programming that helps them achieve their best selves and live healthy lives. When those individuals are built up, they create connected, healthy, and engaged communities that work together to lift and support one another. Our community is unique not only because of the individuals within it; it is the magic in connectedness where we find joy and true happiness.

This fall, we hope you join us at the After the Bell program in your child’s school, on the fields in our Flag Football League (don’t miss the new all Girl’s Gridiron!), or we invite you to volunteer in one of our many programs in Willowbrook. There are options for every age and interest in your family, and I can’t wait to see you at The Community House, YOUR Community House!

Music Together

Ages: 0-6 years old with parent/caregiver

Each week, babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and the grownups who love them gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time with Tiny Toes Music. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments, of course). In Music Together’s mixed age classes, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize, listen and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidences as they emerge as classroom leaders. You'll take home the award-winning music used in class, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. You'll be supporting your child's music-learning and overall development all week long as you discover new ways to play with music together. It's so much fun, you won't realize how much learning is taking place! Infant siblings under 9 months attend for free and any caregiver (parent, nanny, or grandparent) can participate in this family music experience. For more information, visit www.TinyToesMusic.com

The Daughter of the Regiment at The Lyric Opera

Ages: 21 years old and up

Not to be missed! Lyric Opera of Chicago is delighted to bring this production of Donizetti’s “The Daughter of the Regiment” - bel canto opera’s equivalent of vintage champagne - to the city for the first time. Marie, the lovable, irrepressible spirited heroine - a foundling, raised by soldiers - loves handsome Tonio. Things get complicated when the Marquise carts her off to refine her with a “proper” education. In one exhilarating number after another, Marie throws off coloratura flourishes like shooting stars, while her tenor sweetheart pops out nine high Cs in a single aria! Bel canto superstar Lawrence Brownlee and comedic veteran Alessandro Corbelli partner with the dazzling Lisette Oropesa in her eagerly awaited Lyric debut. We have great seating on Main floor 2!

The production is sung in French with projected English title. Opera starts at 2:00pm. Running Time is 2 hours and 45 minutes, including one intermission. Must register by or before November 2 to attend.

Per Harvard Medical School, Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion,” but it might well be called “medication in motion.” There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice has value in treating or preventing many health problems. Tai Chi is a practice that involves a series of slow gentle movements and physical postures, a meditative state of mind, and controlled breathing. It’s a low-impact, slow-motion exercise, that doesn’t put any pressure on the joints. It’s also slowly becoming therapeutic exercise for many chronic health conditions. Join Zuzana from Hummingbird Qigong in this beginners 6 weeks Tai Chi program to improve your balance, coordination and overall health.
