What is methanol? Methanol (often abbreviated as MeOH) is a combustible, volatile and achromatic liquid which is extremely harmful or poisonous in nature. It represents the uncomplicated or simplest alcohol with chemical formula CH3OH. Earlier, MeOH was produced only by the dry distillation of wood but now it is produced by the reforming of natural gas with steam and then converting and distilling the resulting synthesized gas mixture to create pure methanol. What is methanol reformer? Methanol reformer is an apparatus used especially in the process of converting fuel into electricity through an electrochemical reaction of hydrogen fuel with oxygen or another oxidizing agent. Methanol reformers operate on a convenient mix of methanol with water and require little electric power. A mixture of methanol and demineralized water is vaporized in heat exchangers. Whilst passing the heated catalyst, the methanol/water vapor mixture is converted into a synthesis gas consisting of H2, CO, CO2, CH4 and water vapor. The synthesis gas then passes through the purification unit, where the hydrogen is purified and delivered. What are the advantages of MeOH reformers? Methanol reformers are considered as an element of a vehicle powered by hydrogen fuel cell. The principal benefit of vehicles with reformers is that it does not require a pressurized gas tank to store hydrogen fuel; instead, MeOH is stored as a liquid. The logistic inferences of this are grand; pressurized hydrogen is difficult to store and produce. Also, this could help mitigate the public's worry over the jeopardy of hydrogen and by that make fuel cell powered vehicles more beguiling.
