In October, scientists tested raccoons against an intelligence test inspired by the famous Aesop’s fable “The Crow and the Pitcher”. In the fable, a crow drops stones into a pitcher to raise the water level; in the study, two out of eight raccoons dropped stones into a cylinder to grab a marshmallow. Those two raccoons passed other tests involving water displacement as well. A third raccoon, devising new ways to get her treat, tipped the cylinder over entirely.
