2021 FIA European Truck Racing Championship - Zolder Zolder Warm Up The MV Commercial Racing Team were happy with the progress being made ahead of Qualifying for the first race of the third round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship at Circuit Zolder. Team driver Luke Garrett was happy with the way the race truck was responding in the Saturday Warm Up session, ‘I was not trying to push too hard; it was more of a case of getting into rhythm and putting the pieces of the jigsaw together’. ‘Warm up went well, we had a lot of traffic around us throughout the session and I wanted to find a gap just to chill and that will be the aim for qualifying, find space, piece the lap together and my personal aim to get below the 2-minute mark’. ‘Although we were 0.5 second off the time of yesterday there is more to come, and it all starts with qualifying this morning’. Garrett recorded the 13th fastest time of warm up and is still just shy of potentially grabbing a place in the Superpole session for the ten fastest drivers in the initial qualifying session.
Zolder Saturday Qualifying The MV Commercial Racing Team were looking forward to making an impression in the important session of Qualification for Race 1 in the third round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship. The session itself saw Norbert Kiss, Sasha Lenz and Jochen Hahn head the field in the early exchanges, Luke Garrett had his first flying lap time disallowed for exceeding track limits before the qualifying session was halted to recover Heinrich Clemens Hecker’s stricken vehicle which stopped on the circuit with a broken turbocharger. The disjointed manner of qualifying left a scramble for a place in Superpole, for Garrett it was a case of posting a time and his hopes to record a lap below the 2-minute mark were achieved as he claimed a creditable 13th place result, just behind the Iveco of Steffi Halm and the Freightliner of Aliyyah Koloc. Luke was pleased with the performance of the MV Commercial Team MAN, ‘I have achieved my initial goal, it was pleasing to net a time below 2 minutes which was the aim, thirteenth on the grid is a good place to be, we were a little surprised by the pace of Recuenco at the end of the session to drop to the seventh row of the grid, but it is
a good position to start from and now we go for a top ten in the race.’ He added, ‘I was blocked on my fastest lap and also had a lap time dismissed because I had to take evasive action and run over the grass, but I am enjoying the experience and we go again this afternoon, it is almost a case of dodging the markers to get a good time around here’.
up on the grid, Garrett proceeded to follow around in line from 13th on the grid to get used to the circuit, but it soon became apparent that all was not well with the MAN race truck and to save any problematic damage Luke Garrett pulled over to the side of the circuit to retire with the engine cutting out to end a disappointing Saturday result.

The MV Commercial Racing Team suffered mixed fortunes in the Saturday Races for Race 1 Qualifying the team started 12th and looked set to attack those immediately in front of them but the gear stick broke which meant driver Luke Garrett could get the pressure to drop the gears down but with a ‘lever’ barely measuring five centimetres Garrett found it extremely difficult to move quickly up the gears to challenge those in front of him and finished 14th ahead of the stricken Recuenco and Hecker whose failed to take the start with an engine failure in qualifying. The MV Commercial Team were hoping for better in race 2, starting under yellow flag conditions due to a heavy rain shower that started with the trucks already lined
The MV Commercial Race Team finally were rewarded with a podium finish in the Chrome Class as Luke Garrett steered the MAN race truck into a final finishing position of eleventh place and a 3rd place finish behind Teo Calvet and Shane Brereton to secure his first Championship podium. Garrett’s race times were equivalent to those around him, he suffered greatly as Aliyyah Koloc knocked him off track twice as he tried to pass her. This delayed Garrett who steadily made progress, as first Recuenco retired and Hecker was disqualified for over speeding. Garrett now ahead of the stricken Koloc, then passed Jamie Anderson and was at one stage just outside the top ten until Rene Reinert recovered some form to pass
the MV Commercial driver. Two laps from the end of the race Steffen Haas received a ten second time penalty for over speeding and this allowed Luke to go ahead of him by the margin of one second to take the final podium place. A delighted Garrett said after the race, ‘The MV Commercial Team needed that especially after yesterday with the gear lever and the limiter and also this morning when we struggled to get traction, so to get a podium was a terrific result’. Garrett added, ‘We start the final race in eleventh place but more importantly we hold that final podium spot at the start, I know I have faster guys behind me but if we can keep that pace, with a little good fortune we may just finish the weekend with another podium, we will wait and see’. The MV Commercial Racing Team started in 11th place for race four and had a slight advantage before contact was made in front of Luke Garrett by the Scania of Steffen Faas and the Iveco of Rene Reinert at the first corner. Garrett could do little to avoid the Iveco as it moved across his path eventually spinning from the track on the outside of turn 2 but having already collected the MV Commercial MAN on its way through. The race was effectively over from that point although Luke kept the MV Commercial MAN on the track he was forced to retire when he lost air pressure and a splitter broke. It was a disappointing end to the weekend especially after the euphoria of securing a podium finish in the Chrome Category in race 3.

2021 FIA European Truck Racing Championship Le Mans Preview The 2021 FIA European Truck Racing Championship heads to France for round 4 of this season’s Championship this coming weekend 25th-26th September 2021. Le Mans is the venue staging a complete weekend of truck racing which generates large crowds flocking into the circuit for the event, not only are the FIA European Truck Racing Championship competitors in town but also what is now going to be the Final Round of the French Truck Racing Championship following the announcement of the cancellation of Le Castellet in early October. The MV Commercial Race Team have high hopes of continuing their improvements following a mixed weekend in Zolder where Luke Garrett secured the first podium finish for the MV Commercial Race Team. Seven of the drivers have all tasted success on the 4.273km Bugatti Circuit since 2016, Jochen Hahn leads the way with five victories, Steffi Halm has three wins under her belt, two each for Adam Lacko and Andre
Kursim, whilst Norbert Kiss, Antonio Albacete and Sasha Lenz have also taken the top step of the podium. This season Norbert Kiss heads to France with a 14 point advantage over Adam Lacko with Sasha Lenz a further 4 points back in third place. In the ‘Goodyear Cup’ standings for Chrome rated drivers, Teo Calvet with seven race victories from the last eight heads the table 23 points clear of the Apollo Tyres Tor Truck Racing Team and Shane Brereton. Jamie Anderson and Steffen Faas are separated by only three points in the battle for third place. This weekend Calvet is committed to the French Championship and will not contest the FIA ETRC rounds, giving an opportunity to the chasing pack to close the gap to the young French driver and with 60 points at stake over the weekend it is all to play for. ‘Zolder was frustrating for the MV Commercial Race Team, the highlight being the podium success of course’, MV Commercial Race Team Driver Luke Garret commented. ‘Looking ahead to Le Mans we know how
important qualifying is for the main Championship Races and we will be looking to continue our improvements in this area, we are making progress with each round we compete in, we are starting to understand what the truck is capable of and we are learning new circuits’, added the MV Commercial Race Team Driver.

MV COMMERCIAL ACQUIRES FRUEHAUF IN MAJOR INDUSTRY DEAL Specialist truck provider MV Commercial has completed a multi-million-pound deal to buy tipping trailer and rigid body manufacturer Fruehauf out of administration – protecting 120 jobs and securing a positive future for one of the best-known brands in the industry. The landmark deal includes an immediate cash injection and a commitment to a further £30m investment over the next three years, as part of ambitious plans to modernise the manufacturing facility and realise the full potential of the 67-acre site in Grantham, Lincolnshire. MV Commercial will also revive the legendary ‘Crane Fruehauf’ name, by which the business was known until around 1998. The rebranding is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
Tom O’Rourke, CEO of MV Commercial, says: “This is a hugely significant day for both businesses; and an opportunity we couldn’t turn down. Fruehauf has a fantastic product range, a rich heritage, and a wealth of talent within its team which will be complemented by MV Commercial’s strength and experience in the marketplace. “With immediate effect we are starting work to scale production back up, enabling us to commit to a delivery schedule for outstanding customer orders and begin building new stock trailers for MV’s own contract hire and ready-to-go fleets.” MV Commercial is best known for its onestop-shop approach and plans to open a truck sales and rental facility on site in Grantham within the next month. Work
will begin within days to refurbish and modernise much of the site. Steven Cairns, Managing Director of MV Commercial, says: “Geographically, Grantham is the perfect fit for us to develop a true ‘super site’. We should have 80-90 trucks and trailers available for sale on site within a month, and the manufacturing workforce back in the factory building at pace again. “We are so excited for the potential this acquisition brings and committed to ensuring there is a lot more Fruehauf product available in the marketplace. For long-time Fruehauf customers, we are confident this is very good news.” Production capacity within the factory is expected to quickly reach 15-20 trailers per week under MV’s stewardship, with the future investment to focus on greater automation and achieving world-class production standards. MV Commercial has committed to con-
tinue offering the full Fruehauf trailer and body range, and 100 per cent of the current workforce will transfer under TUPE. Commenting on the planned rebranding, O’Rourke adds: “MV Commercial is best known for building the biggest and most capable crane trucks in the market. Cranes are a huge part of what we do, so we certainly weren’t going to turn down the opportunity to put the ‘Crane’ back into ‘Crane Fruehauf’!” MV Commercial employs 190 staff spread across five sites and has a strong track record for delivering business growth both organically and through acquisition. It has previously acquired the assets of two major rental businesses – Regal Truck Rental and TLS – plus in 2015 it acquired bodybuilder JWR Recovery Trucks.
