#everybodyIN   by GREG BEASLEY (Head of School)

T

he best Christian school. What does that look like? It’s a question I’ve pondered more than a thousand times. What does it take to be the best? It’s a great question for every area of life. In fact, we find numerous scriptures commanding us to give our best. Whether in giving financially, seeking God, our occupation, or picking up after our children, God instructs us to do all we do as unto Him (Col 3:23). It is my desire to lead MVCA to be the best Christian school. I am convinced God has given me the skills and ability to do this. Well, the truth is, he has given you the skills and ability to make this happen (1 Pet

4:10). Yes, that’s right. I learned a valuable lesson throughout my sports career. If you are going to be the best team, it requires everyone giving their best. I understand the importance of vision (Prov 29:18). Vision is a must in knowing which direction to go. We could not ask for a greater visionary than the Creator of the Universe. He ordains our steps and has created a plan and purpose for us all (Jer 29:11). His plan and purpose for MVCA involves you...right now. We are all here together, for such a time as this. So the answer to being the best Christian school is simple. With

#everybodyIN, using our God given talents and skills, to the best of our ability, we will be the best Christian school!

SPARC Together...over $1,000,000 raised as of July 1, 2016 UPDATE FROM SPARC CHAIRMAN

In our March update, we shared that we had $830,000 committed. As you can see, momentum is building. As we recommit ourselves to prayer, we are reminded that this Kingdom building effort began with a Vision over 10 years ago for just a time as this. As we continue to talk to potential partners throughout the community and the school, we are reminded daily that God’s Hand is all over this project and He will be glorified through it.

DEVELOPMENT IT’S YOUR MOVE

“I

t’s your move!”, our 2015 auction, was a huge success. Thanks to all those who were a part of planning and attending. A special thank you to LoK Photography for the event photos. Together, we raised $140,000 which was a big part in successfully meeting our financial goal to close this year’s gap. This was a record breaking night in attendance, in funds raised, and hearts won in support of Christian education. Many people commented on the fun of the Monopoly theme and wondered, "How will we top that next year?" Get ready, because the team has been working hard. Make sure to mark your calendars for Friday, November 18, 2016!

WRITE YOUR STORY

by Beth Park, Development Assistant and 7th grade mom

n Thursday, March 10th, family and friends of MVCA gathered at SonRise Church to celebrate and support the Academy at the annual Scholarship Banquet. Each year, MVCA receives many more requests for financial aid and scholarships than we can meet. Increasing the amount of financial aid available for our students is of primary importance to MVCA. Our strategic scholarship program was developed as a response to this need. Donors are matched anonymously with students, who then share their successes and stories with their patron throughout the school year. Three new scholarship funds were established this year. The Wambach Memorial Scholarship celebrates the lives of MVCA Founders Ed and MaryLou Wambach, and will be awarded to an MVCA student exhibiting outstanding character and leadership. The Esther Group focuses on women helping women. Finally, the Matt McCoy Scholarship was established by Cindy McCoy and her sons Adam and Aaron in memory of their husband and father, Matt McCoy, who passed away suddenly this spring. The theme of this year’s event was “Write Your Story.” Participants gathered for fellowship, hors d’oeuvres and a light buffet dinner, as well as a question and answer from current scholarship recipients and special music by Jillian Beasley. Particularly moving was the testimony from the McCoy family, who shared about how much Matt loved MVCA and how the newly established scholarship will honor his life. Following the presentations, guests were encouraged to “write their story” for a student and prayerfully consider their participation in the scholarship program. A big thanks to those that were a part of this event as well as to SonRise Church for allowing us to host the event at their beautiful church. 6

ngoing security improvements at MVCA assure that we have the safest campus possible. In addition, our students and staff are trained and prepared for emergency situations. This past year, MVCA purchased 18 Motorola Two-Way Walkie-talkies to assist in emergency situations and evacuations. The school has also partnered with NaviGate Prepared which provides online safety measures and 360 degree views of the interior of the school for first responders to access during an emergency. A special thanks to MVCA parent, George Reuss, who has continued to expand our security cameras along with assisting in purchasing and installing of 4 entry cameras and intercoms at each of the 4 main entrances. Another improvement has been the implementation of a single main entrance during school hours of 8:00 am - 2:40 pm. This brings all traffic to the center of the campus. Students and staff continue to practice a variety of drills throughout the year in order to challenge thinking and develop skills to observe, orient, decide, and act.

SERVATHON

by STEPHANIE SCOTT

F

riday, April 15, was MVCA’s 11th annual Servathon. During this event, every teacher, staff member and student took the day to spread the love of Jesus by serving in our community. This resulted in service to 22 local non profits by 430 participants for a total of 1,720 hours. We thank everyone for their resources, both time and gifts, to our students and the advancement of God’s kingdom through Christian education. Serving has become such an important role in everyday life of students and staff here at the academy. In years past, we would think about serving once a

year; now we have long term partnerships with non profits. Our students are serving through-out the year, well past their required service hours. During Servathon, our students are seeing firsthand how their work is making lasting impressions on recipients. This could be done through serving lunch to residents who are staying at Ronald McDonald House while their child is at Children’s Hospital; or while delivering furniture with New Life Furniture to people who are coming out of shelters. Our students are touching lives by singing Bible verses at SEM Haven to Alzheimer patients and by making soup with LaSoupe to deliver to local kids. These are just a few examples of our work.

Our service is definitely making a lasting impact on many lives. This can only be done through support of Servathon. Your gifts help us to “Prepare minds and hearts to impact the world for Christ.” Thank you very much to our 2016 Servathon premier sponsors!

ADVANCE

by Jody Hilsher

Y

ears ago, MVCA recognized the importance of creating a time and space for the Middle School and High School students to get away from school and experience time alone with God, with the staff, and with one another. This event is known as the MVCA Advance. The word Advance is a great illustration of our school’s goal to advance our relationship with God and one other. This year’s Advance took place on April 13 and 14 at Kings Domain in Oregonia, OH. Kings Domain is a Christian campground which also hosts summer camps and is the home of the OCR World Championships for the Mud, Guts, and Glory competition where participants come from all over the world. Lynn Woods, Ambassador’s Pointe Youth Pastor, gave a powerful message on the students walk with the Lord and willingness to take it to the next level. He was joined by Worship Leader, Kevin Hill for a great time of worship and prayer for the students. The Advance was an awesome time Girls working together to help paint the wall as a service project

of community and living life together. The MVCA students participated in the MVCAmazing Race along with the Kings Domain Obstacle Course. One of the neat traditions is that the students have a time of service for Kings Domain. Each class is paired with a Kings Domain staff member and serve as a class to help improve the grounds and facilities. Advance continues to be a highlight of the school year and will continue to inspire young adults to “advance” their lives for God’s kingdom.

DISCIPLESHIP by Jody Hilsher

M

any times, discipleship can be viewed as “just a class.” At MVCA, discipleship is something that is taking place in each area of the school. Our Discipleship & Bible class takes the opportunity to study through the Bible along with talking about life issues and how to live as a Christian. Living life together takes shape in so many areas. Our staff continues to disciple and mentor students in their Academic classes. We’ve had several area Pastors

and Youth Pastors who have come and shared their heart in chapel or give their perspective during a Seed Group. I Corinthians 3:7 states that “one plants, one waters, but it is God who receives the increase.” Each of us are on the journey of life and find ourselves at various locations along the path. Through discipleship, chapels, seed groups, and student activities, our students come to realize that God loves them and wants what is best for them. Sometimes, we may not always receive it, and other times, we need an adult or friend to come along side of us and support us, but MVCA provides a safe environment to walk and grow in your faith. Another big part of MVCA is the opportunity to serve. Students serve in ongoing ministries like LaSoupe, InterParish, Bearing Precious Seed, and our annual Servathon. Service has become something that we “get to do” rather than something we “have to do.” The spirit of leadership is one that comes as a result of the willingness to serve one another.

PRAYER REA L LY DOES MA KES A DIFFEREN CE     Impact, by OLIVIA SHERWOOD (Class of 2017)

S

ometimes, we underestimate the power of prayer. Even though we may have little faith, God continues to amaze us through the works He does through us. “He said to them, ‘Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.’ Matthew 17:20 God is powerful and it’s crazy to think that He wants us to be a part of His plan. We demonstrate this through an organized prayer walk called Impact. We feel “Impact” is the perfect name. It is a verb and an action that narrows our focus solely on what God wants to do in our school. We want to see God move and impact our school, our nation, and our world because we know that He is capable. Elena Stenson and I felt called to start the prayer walk that began on November 23. Ever since, Impact has been held in the high school cafeteria at 7:20 AM, every Monday before school. Almost every week, we walk the halls of our school and lay our hands on each locker to pray for the students of the middle and high school. Other weeks, we pray for events, prayer requests, and things pressing on our hearts. We only hope that God can use us to impact the world around us. 12

ho can break ground and till soil like no body’s business? The Prayer Mom’s at MVCA that’s who :-) James 5:16, The prayers of the righteous availeth much. This group of Moms meet once a month to pray for our school from top to bottom. The hearts of these women are joined with every Mom connected to our school and they stand in the gap through prayer for every family, teacher, staff member and board member. We come together to learn how to press into a deeper relationship with our heavenly Father and use the tools of the Kingdom through prayer to reach this generation and the ones beyond! We gather to meet and pray but we also have book and Bible studies that are not only affecting our lives but the lives of those around us. Relationships are deepening because of the journey that we have been on and we are open to the new and exciting things of the Spirit. It’s amazing how something that started as a little seed has grown into a tree that is producing such a harvest. That is the agenda of our God; grow, learn, spread out into the uttermost parts of the world. Our world at MVCA is expanding and we are very excited about it all and can’t wait to taste and see what the Lord has in store! So, if you see that your child is different in any way, pray into that with us and agree that all of our children will be the children of Joel 2:28, “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams and your young men will see visions.” These are the days of the harvest, our fields are white as snow and we will see the Glory of God among the land of the living!! MVCA is going places and we want you to join us in prayer at your own convenience or The First Monday of the Month…that’s when we meet, in the HS Cafetorium at 8:00am. We also meet one other Monday of the month for a study and fellowship. Get involved by contacting Carla at Bw3carla@yahoo.com, Send a Facebook message to Carla to join the private group on Facebook.

I

t’s been a busy year in the technology department at MVCA! As we look at technology in the classroom this year, we now have a full classroom set of iPads in all 1st through 6th grade classrooms. We also ordered two Promethean ActivBoards and plan to pilot them in Kindergarten and 2nd grade. We continue to work towards keeping our students safe online with a more robust internet filtering system. As we look towards the 2016-2017 school year, we hope to have all elementary classrooms with Promethean ActivBoards by the end of the year and plan to implement a modified 1:1 iPad program for students in 5th through 8th grade. As we look towards the future, we would love to see a collaborative effort happen between our staff and our parents through a technology committee. We hope this team would be able to come together and make recommendations to help parents as they navigate the digital world with their students. This team would also help recommend and lead technology initiatives at MVCA as we look to advance our efforts to provide a 21st Century Education. We are excited about the future of technology at MVCA! We look forward to helping our staff, students and families navigate the constantly changing tech-world and learn how they can expand their knowledge and use of the digital world.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM by Lynda Lunn

A

s a small, intimate community, MVCA is poised to join God in His plan to bless all peoples through His people. Bringing the world that we desire to impact into the walls of our academy is part of the much bigger picture of God’s eternal scheme. People from every nation, tribe and language will worship around His throne. We as a community will resemble that model. We have the ability to know the international students on a very personal level, to service their unique needs and to immerse them in language and culture that will equip graduates to successfully enter into universities of their choice. The diversity and specialized training of our faculty continues to grow. Because we have multi-lingual staff, teachers who have lived and taught in foreign countries and faculty who hold certifications in teaching the English language learner, we now have ability to teach and mentor students with a high degree of efficacy. Hosting international students will allow the MVCA community to put into practice the Biblical concepts often discussed in circles of faith but less often acted upon. The call to practice hospitality and welcome those different from us is one such concept. Faculty, students and host families will have ample opportunity to live out facets of faith that are important to the expansion of our global communities and the Kingdom. The ISP will help us achieve true growth in the understanding of other cultures, and encouraging unity in our diversity. Many international students come from very hospitable cultures, those based in deep devotion to honor and respect, as well as cultures that promote excellence in academics, the arts and athletics. These students often contribute to the school culture from their adherence to these values. These collisions of cultures often birth rich experiences for all parties involved.

MISSION TRIP TO GUATEMALA by Carley Hilsher (Class of 2014) and Carter Hilsher (Class of 2016)

T

his past January, I was able to start off the 2016 year in my favorite country with some of my most favorite people in the world. That place is a small village in Buena Vista, Guatemala. As I watched fireworks high over Guatemala City on New Year’s Eve, I reflected on how blessed I was to be back, and what a great week it was about to be. I had the opportunity to attend with my brother, Carter who was a senior at MVCA this year. This was my fourth trip to Guatemala. My first trip was during my freshman year of High School, then my junior year I returned, and then I lived there for about four months immediately following my High School graduation from MVCA in 2014. This past trip, I was so excited to see the Guatemalans that I had shared life with for those four months back in 2014 during my internship. They were the people that made my homesickness a little easier, helped me practice Spanish, kept me on my toes, and made me laugh every day. The American family that I stay with are like my second family, and it is always good to see them and catch up with them. Many good times are spent in Guatemala always making great memories to remember forever. It was truly the most refreshing trip I could have asked for. Guatemala is truly my happy place. That is where I feel like I can unwind, not worry about my life in the States, and connect with God on a very deep level. My brother Carter commented, “Our mission trip to Guatemala was an enriching and character building experience. We went to a widow's house to give her groceries and saw how little she had, yet she was still praising God and thanking us. It is a great reminder of how much we truly have and that we should be thankful for it.” All aspects of the week were wonderful, but one particular experience stands out to me. Towards the end of the week, we were able to go visit our American friend’s good friend, Cesar. Cesar is a 42 year old Guatemalan man that has been bedridden for most of his life. He is paralyzed from the waist down. Usually if someone has this type of condition, it often leaves them sad, devastated, or angry at God. But not Cesar. Cesar is the most joyful, wise, and happy man you will ever meet. We sat at his bedside for about an hour and a half listening to him impart words of wisdom, teach us about the character of God, and sing songs of praise with him. It was such a sweet time and so incredible to spend that time with such a strong man of God. His zest for the Lord is simply amazing, and even though he has a life altering condition, He gives all credit back to God, knowing that he has this condition this to bring glory to God and tell others about him. He said probably over 30 times, “I am so blessed, so blessed.” God definitely spoke to me through Cesar that day, encouraging my heart and making me realize that I have so much to be thankful for in this life, and how it truly is all from God according to His goodness. The week was nothing short of a blessing, and I am so thankful that God let me return to my second home. I am looking forward to see what the Lord keeps doing in Guatemala and cannot wait to return there again someday. www.educatebv.com

PASTOR BREAKFAST Choir, led by Ms. Bethany Stanger, performs for pastors

Part of the uniqueness of MVCA is the over 70 churches that are represented by the students and staff who fill the campus. This year, MVCA renewed a tradition of inviting our families’ Pastors, Youth Pastors, and Church Staff to come and join us for breakfast. The purpose was to encourage them, thank them, and support them. God has given parents a unique responsibility of training their children. It

is the church who supports them, and as a Christian School, we have the opportunity to partner with both the home and the church. Pastors spend countless hours serving and shepherding. As a school, we want them to feel welcome in our hallways, invited to our cafeterias, sharing in our chapels, and motivating in our seed groups. We appreciate each of their call to God’s service and honor them as they

The partnership of the home, the church, and the school will make an impact in the lives of our students as we continue to love them and encourage them.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVER

Speaks to Middle/High School

M

iddle school and high school students had the wonderful opportunity to hear from two speakers who experienced life during the Nazi occupation. Sonja Stratman, a gentile, was in first grade when Hitler took control of Germany. She was a member of the Hitler Youth. For 58 years, Mrs. Stratman, did not speak of atrocities of the Nazi regime. We also heard from Stephanie Marks, who was born in Konin, Poland in 1925. Stephanie’s family was soon forced to flee and endure many trials. Their journey of hiding and fleeing took nearly two years and consisted of 7,000 miles, five countries and two continents. Mrs. Stratman’s and Mrs. Marks’ first-hand accounts of the rise to power of a dictator gave MVCA students an opportunity to experience what most only read about in books. Stories like these build into young minds empathy and a resolve to never allow such atrocities to happen again. As a follow up, MVCA students visited The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education to view the exhibit Mapping Our Tears, an innovative educational experience that showcases the strength and the courage of the human spirit.

National Honor Society National Junior Honor Society

M

VCA’s National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society seek to serve both the school and community well. Each day, the school begins the morning with ten minutes of Bible reading and prayer, and NHS students have been committed to taking this time each morning to pray intentionally for the school, its staff, and all of the students. In March, NHS members coordinated, set up, and conducted the Induction Ceremony to welcome new members to both chapters. There were nine inductees to the National Honor Society and nine inductees to the National Junior Honor Society. During the induction, former Headmaster Dr. Gary Sallquist exhorted the students to pursue lifelong learning and leadership. Members of both chapters have exhibited humble leadership this year in a variety of service projects for the school and community. First semester, NHS provided childcare for MVCA’s Auction, as well as the staff Christmas party. NJHS partnered with the City of Newtown during Winterfest by creating a snowmanthemed photo booth, taking photos, and passing out candy during the festival. Second semester, NHS decorated the cafetorium for the Father-Daughter Dance and volunteered throughout the evening as there was need. NJHS wrote encouraging notes with “tips for Middle School” to next year’s rising 7th graders. Currently, NJHS members are providing volunteers for MVCA’s Evening of Fine Arts, as well as coordinating a volunteer signup for MVCA’s musical production, where they will also serve as ushers. NHS students have and continue to support teachers as aides where needed, and both NHS and NJHS are preparing a meaningful week of encouragement for Teacher Appreciation Week in May. MVCA’s National and Junior Honor Societies are indeed displaying their desire to serve both God and others to impact the Kingdom.

GRANDPARENTS DAY M

VCA experienced a record-breaking day celebrating grandparents from all over the Cincinnati area. More than 300 guests enjoyed local author Jinny Powers Berten as she donated her time and signed copies of her books at this event. Not only was Cincinnati nostalgia discussed, she also followed the event by signing her books for the school constituency. Grandparents then spent time in the classrooms experiencing educational best practices in today’s academic arena. Sue Reichard, MVCA grandparent said, “We learned so much from Jinny Berten. I could have listened to her for hours. The classroom activities were so enjoyable. Thanks for this indelible memory!”

Our Fine Arts department continues to have their needs met through the organization of a talented and passionate group of volunteers and through specific fundraising efforts. Arts provide a unique and important opportunity to showcase what is special about Miami Valley Christian Academy. It is a pillar of the curriculum at MVCA where our faculty maintain class schedules, put aside hours for productions and rehearsals, and are actively involved in fundraising for their own departments. The Faculty’s talent and passion rivals that of any in the greater Cincinnati area. This excellence is evidenced by the accolades and awards our student body receives every year in the area of Fine Arts. ~LEE ANN RASK

mazing – that is the only way to describe how God has blessed the MVCA Lions Athletic Department. God’s word says, “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” (Col 3:23-24) It is with great joy that we are able to be a part of God’s Kingdom and flow in the anointing of His Spirit. Our teams have stepped out from the world of competition and shown what it truly means to impact the world for Christ. Student-athletes have been using their games, matches, and meets to minister to others in more ways than one can imagine. From praying with, to eating a dinner of thanksgiving with, to sharing a faith based movie night with the opposition to show them the love of Christ. Our coaches and players have gone above and beyond the call of fielding quality teams to becoming the “hands and feet of Christ” in the world of athletics. MVCA athletic teams have had blessed success on the courts and fields as well. We have seen great accomplishments as our teams have won multiple league championships as well as great tournament and playoff success! Varsity Football made playoffs in their first and only 2 years of OHSAA eligibility. Varsity Volleyball became Sectional Champs and District Runner-Ups. Varsity Basketball won the Ohio Valley Athletic League Championships and our Boys Team was ranked #1 in the OHSAA Southwest District Sectional. Baseball and Boys and Girls Track are competed at a highly successful level. And thanks to Cross Country, MVCA had it’s first athlete qualify for OHSAA State Competition! Another of the many blessings is our upcoming venture into the Miami Valley Conference. The MVC is considered one of the premiere conferences in the state of Ohio and MVCA will be beginning that partnership in the 2017-18 school year. We will compete and minister with schools like Summit Country Day, Cincinnati Country Day, Lockland Schools, Seven Hills Schools along with many others. The MVC has a long history of schools with great accomplishments in the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Multiple sate championships in multiple sports have been won by MVC teams. MVCA looks forward to joining that distinguished list. 26

Fighting cancer Our Lions partnered with New Miami’s volleyball team to raise awareness for esophageal and breast cancers. Each team has had close friends or family members that have been affected by these horrible illnesses so they decided to choose their game night to honor the survivors, fighters, and fallen. Each team dedicated the game to honor a special esophageal cancer fighter. New Miami’s coach is being directly affected by this disease as her brother is currently waging war in this battle. MVCA presented him with a prayer blanket to remind him that no one fights alone. Twitter@MVC AOH | Facebook .com/M iamiValleyChr istianAcademy

ALUMNI REUNITE TO START BUSINESS M

VCA is a school that encourages excellence, hard work, love for others, and love for God. The school instills values in the students that they take with them, even after graduating and leaving 6830 School Street. MVCA graduates Sean Spurlock (class of 2011) and Zach Greves (class of 2012) are using those values and others gained since their time at MVCA to impact the world for Christ through the restaurant industry. Spurlock and Greves, alongside Anne Schwirtz (class of 2011) are ready to take on a monumental task: launch a startup called Two Cities Pizza Company. Dreams of a start-up pizzeria are quickly becoming a reality. Two Cities is making landfall in Mason, Ohio. The new company is a restaurant concept that offers the best of New York and Chicago style in both food and atmosphere. The driving idea behind the name Two Cities is to bridge the gap between New York and Chicago style pizza. “At Two Cities Pizza Company, we are passionate about people and pizza. People make-up the living organism of a city. A city’s skeleton is the buildings, towers, bridges, subways, and streets but a city’s lifeblood is the people. Pizza, as we know it, was created by New York and Chicago. We bridge the gap between the two cities iconic pizza styles through our artisanal thin crust and deep dish. Two Cities Pizza Company is the culmination of our passions, that's why we founded it and that’s why we believe in it (Sean Spurlock).” Aside from the food, the restaurant boasts two outdoor patios, a fire-pit, a coffee and wine lounge, subway themed restrooms, a beautifully designed “Boardroom” that is available for meetings and parties, and a working NYC taxi cab that is used for errands and deliveries. The project has been in development for the past year and a half, and thanks to the help and support of so many people and communities, like Miami Valley, Two Cities Pizza Company is only a few short months away from the grand opening. Be on the lookout in the weeks to come for their website, Facebook page, and more information regarding the opening! Sean, Zach, and Anne would love to see and serve the MVCA family! If you have any questions, comments, encouragements, or interest in employment, please email MVCA Alumni Sean, Zach, and Anne at twocitiespizza@gmail.com. 30
