Seattle-based Mutuus Studio has forged a distinctive practice of expanding the boundaries between architecture and art with their integrated approach to design. In 2016, architects Kristen Becker and Jim Friesz came together with artist Saul Becker to form Mutuus Studio out of mutual appreciation for beautifully crafted design. Their studio name, Mutuus (moo-tis) translates from Latin to mean mutual / exchange reinforcing their studio philosophy that design is inherently collaborative and mutually beneﬁcial.

Known for their reﬁned architecture and warm modern interiors, the interdisciplinary ﬁrm distinguished themselves from traditional architectural practices by designing Mutuus Made lighting, objects and furnishings exclusively to our clients. The lighting collection has been in award winning hospitality and residential projects and featured in publications such as New York Times, Dwell, Architectural Digest and Elle Décor.

“As an artist growing up in the Paciﬁc Northwest, I was surrounded by nature. I became fascinated with the way we live with light and the way it transcends time and cohabits within our natural environment. I sought to design a collection that captures the ambient comforting light that draws people together. We are excited to now invite others to live with the lights we have created.”

The Dead City Story

The Dead City collection, inspired by Mutuus partner and artist Saul Becker’s landscape paintings and sculptures, explores the human relationship with nature and the built environment.

The ﬁrst light ﬁxture came to life while experimenting with leftover linen used to make canvases and resin to form a micarta lightweight shade. Saul nicknamed the light “The Dead City Pendant” as an homage to the disappearance of the handcrafted object and it’s replacement with mass production. People loved the light with its timeless ambient glow, and the name stuck. It was a pivotal moment and Mutuus Made was born.

The Dead City Pendant became the catalyst to developing an expanded collection. With each new ﬁxture we sought to showcase the evidence of the hands that made it and to create a connection to the past. The Dead City Collection is a reference to the ruins of antiquity that still hold our fascination today. Each light in the suite historically references a lost city of antiquityThe Dead City Pendants, Petra Sconce, Tikal Armed Sconce, and Daro Sconce. The ﬁrst Dead City Pendant prototype was tested in Mutuus partners’ Saul and Kristen Becker’s newly renovated kitchen. The presence of the lights, with their timeworn glow, transformed the room into a warm and welcoming place where everyone migrated.

Inspired by the patina achieved through time, we created a linen micarta shade that even when the light is turned oﬀ has a sculptural presence. The Dead City Pendant comes in two sizes, large and small.

The Daro is a half-round sconce shade made with hand-sanded linen micarta giving the shade an eroded and weathered appearance. The subtle variation of the material ﬁlters light in a unique way and makes each shade distinct.

The Daro sconce ﬁrst came to life in the design of a local Seattle restaurant, where the architecture and the custom lighting cohabit with one of Saul’s landscape paintings. We liken the dining atmosphere to a Dutch still life painting. It’s rich and moody with an elemental simplicity.

The Tikal sconce with is extended arm oﬀers provides task light combined with the signature ambient glow of the linen micarta shade. The texture of the shade, made of lightweight micarta, visually references stone, marble columns, and the bark of a tree.

The Petra sconce features a patinaed brass plate which is hand polished in the center to reﬂect light in an other-worldly glow. The ﬁxture evokes the feeling of a column carved out of a mountain through its timeless proportion.
