Open House provides incoming students with a taste of what life looks like at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Opportunity awaits in a multitude of different ways.

New roommates, friends, adventures and hobbies are on the horizon.

Inside this year’s edition of Open House, you’ll find helpful information on how to get downtown and apply for EBT. Additionally my writers share new hobbies, day trips and food options for your day-to-day life.

Hopefully with this guide you’ll be able to get your footing and fully embrace all that Cal Poly and SLO has to offer. As a junior going into my senior year, I can vouch that college really does go by in the blink of an eye. I think it’s important to seize every opportunity, and get out of your comfort zone while you’re here. Whether that’s joining a new club, trying a new sport or getting involved in the music scene.

How to Experience Downtown

If you are thinking about attending Cal Poly, you have likely heard about how great Downtown San Luis Obispo is – for good reason. With so many options for food, entertainment and shopping, here is a guide to help you start exploring downtown during your first year at Cal Poly.

Riding the bus is one of the best ways to travel downtown without a car on campus. The SLO Transit app is an easy way to check the bus schedules and track where the buses are in real time. You can hop on at Kennedy Library or the Performing Arts Center. During the Farmers’ Market on Thursday nights the buses are busy, so make sure to plan ahead.

The Farmers’ Market is one of the best introductions to everything downtown has to offer. You can sample food and drinks from local restaurants, hear live music and take mental notes of the places you want to visit in the future.

Food

There are so many classic San Luis Obispo restaurants featuring cuisine from all over the world. A quick search online will bring up all your options for provisions downtown.

For casual fare check out Firestone Grill, which is famous for tri tip sandwiches.

Taqueria El Guero, Moe’s Mediterranean, Old Slo BBQ and Urbane Cafe also feature

fast-casual food at reasonable prices. There are also multiple burger joints, sushi spots, Thai restaurants and brunch destinations.

If you are looking to splurge at an upscale restaurant, there are plenty of options. Flour House and Giuseppe’s offer Italian food, Mistura serves Peruvian food and Luna Red makes Latin food. For sweet treat options, check out the iconic McConnell’s or Slo Froyo & Italian Ice.

“I always have a lot of fun downtown, especially with my friends,” Hoeptner said.

“There’s also the Puzzle Effect Escape Room and the arcade, so there’s always something to do.”

Bringing your roommates together to solve the puzzles in the escape room or playing games at the BA Start Arcade and Taproom can be a great bonding experience. After 8 p.m. the arcade is only open to those 21 years and older.

If you have never thrown axes before, college might be the time to try it. As the only indoor axe throwing venue in San Luis Obispo, Battle Axe offers a unique, thrilling experience to share with your friends. Before you start, you can receive a training demonstration to help you hit the target.

Shopping

Downtown is a hub for shopping, but not just for clothing. You can also browse candy stores, comic book shops, cosmetics stores and more.

Downtown is also home to local coffee shops that are great for studying or catching up with friends. Some fan favorites are Kreuzberg California, Linnaea’s Cafe and Scout Coffee Co.

Entertainment

The fun downtown continues with all the options for entertainment.

There are two movie theaters: the Palm Theatre and the Downtown Centre Cinemas.

The Palm shows both indie and mainstream films with discounted tickets on Mondays for $9. College Night happens every Sunday at the Downtown Centre Cinemas for $10 and tickets are $9 on Thursdays.

Biomedical engineering senior Cody Hoeptner said he enjoys the discounted movie prices on Thursdays.

There are plenty of thrift stores downtown including Thrifty Beaches, which sells vintage clothing and was founded by a Cal Poly alumnus. Not only are thrift stores great to shop for clothes, but when you move out of the dorms you will likely find cheap kitchenware and furniture for your next apartment or home.

The boutiques downtown are often pricey, but it is still fun to window shop for clothing and locally-made products. Shops like Blackwater and Buen Dia are fun to browse.

Many big-brand stores also have locations in Downtown San Luis Obispo including H&M, Urban Outfitters, Vans, lululemon and Bath & Body Works. With so many fun things to do, downtown is a great place to explore with your new friends and enjoy the culture of San Luis Obispo.

Mustang Shuttle Mustang Shuttle is a free convenient shuttle service that gives students and employees a ride across campus in the evening.

Rave Guardian The free Rave Guardian app turns your smartphone into a personal safety device that can send anonymous tips, set a safety timer for on-campus walks, text Mustang Patrol, connect to police support and more.

Free Property Registration Students, faculty and staff can register any valuable item in the personal property registration database for free. Anything of value with a serial number, such as a phone, computer or bicycle can be registered.

Poly Alert PolyAlert is Cal Poly’s Emergency Notification System. Cal Poly email addresses are signed up to receive critical emergency information via email, text and voice that helps ensure the safety of our community.

EBT Explained

Being a college student often means living on a tight budget, and an even tighter budget for groceries. Student living shouldn’t mean forgoing fruits and vegetables while having to rely on cheap meals that lack nutritional value throughout the week. Luckily, students can stress less about college meals, and receive financial aid for food with California’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program also known as SNAP.

To be eligible as a Cal Poly student you need to be a legal resident or a U.S. citizen and have a gross monthly income of $2,510 or less.

To apply to CalFresh, go to www.getcalfresh. org or https://www.calfreshcalpoly.org for more information. Upon applying, you must be able to provide identity verification, proof of rental/lease agreement, class schedule, paystubs (if applicable) and financial aid award information.

After applying, a social worker will call you to discuss your financial situation further and what you hope to gain from using the CalFresh financial aid.

Animal science sophomore, Cassidy Jones, found her experience of applying to use CalFresh in the beginning of her sophomore year to be very simple.

“I found the application really easy. The website was really well organized,” Jones said. “My [CalFresh social worker] was really helpful.”

Political science sophomore, Noelle Tober, said she enjoyed how straight-forward the application process was, especially with the opportunity to do it all online.

“After submitting my application, I had my phone interview about three weeks later. The social worker clarified some details from my application and explained the process, including when to expect my card in the mail,” Tober said.

“[I have been able to purchase] a lot more fresh fruit and vegetables, and as a vegetarian, grocery shopping can be more expensive for me.” Jones said. “I don’t have a car, so I primarily have to rely on the California Fresh Market on Foothill Boulevard, but that grocery store is generally more expensive, so I don’t know what I would do without EBT assistance.”

As a college student, Tober has found CalFresh to be very helpful, particularly when needing to pay more money for nutritious food options.

“It’s been a huge help with groceries, especially when it comes to more expensive, nutritious items like fresh fruit,” Tober said.

“I also love that I can use it at the farmers’ market here in SLO. It’s a great system.”

his CalFresh program provides eligible students with up to $292 monthly to be able to spend on groceries. It can be spent at local grocery stores including Trader Joe’s, Vons, Costco, Food 4 Less, and even the Farmers’ Market Downtown SLO.

Jones is vegetarian, and said that the additional financial support is very helpful for groceries.

San Luis Obispo is packed with a variety of different restaurants. Cal Poly’s campus is no exception, with an assortment of foods to choose from.

Whether you are on the hunt for a beverage, healthy snack or hearty dinner, this guide will highlight what campus has to offer.

Coffee & Drinks

A reliable coffee shop is a staple to grab a quick caffeine boost before class or catch up with friends for a weekend debrief. Scout Coffee Co. is my go to when I fancy an iced vanilla latte, matcha or pastry. Located by the Welcome Center, Scout operates from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Don’t worry if you aren’t close to Scout when you need a coffee, there are plenty of shops

throughout campus. In the 1901 Marketplace you can find a mocha or build your own breakfast bowl at Julian’s. The Starbucks in the UU has all the classic drinks from refreshers to nitro cold brews. Be sure to avoid the long line by using the Grubhub app to order ahead. If you are on the move in the morning, stop by the Starbucks at Campus Market. If coffee isn’t your jam, Jamba located in Vista Grande has got you covered with fruit smoothies, wellness shots or pressed juice.

Health

Prioritizing health while being at college is not a daunting task when you see all the healthy options across campus. Health Shack, located near Dexter Lawn has a rotating menu.

They often feature special toast or blended fruit bowls that are sure to make your day better after class. If you are looking for a protein boost, Shake Smart is right outside the Recreation Center with smoothies and acai bowls. You can choose from an array of toppings such as peanut butter, bee pollen and strawberries.

Red Radish in 1901 Marketplace or the salad bar in Campus Market are go-to options if a salad is calling your name. For all the vegans, vegetarians and vegetable lovers, Plant Ivy has got you covered. Located at the Mott Lawn for lunch and the Performing Arts Center circle for dinner, they offer burgers, tacos, bowls and specials that are all plant based. If you are in Vista Grande, the build your own bowl from Balance will keep you fueled with fresh veggies, enjoyable sauces and appetizing proteins that rotate every quarter.

Comfort

Whether you are a freshman or a senior, everyone gets homesick. Nothing makes us feel closer to home than a good, hearty dinner of comfort food. The 1901 Marketplace has an array of excellent choices that are all available on Grubhub. Chick-fil-A is open Monday through Saturday and offers chicken nuggets, sandwiches and macaroni and cheese. If you are craving some Asian cuisine, Panda Express offers everything from chow mein to orange chicken that will be sure to help you forget about that midterm stress – at least for a couple of bites.

Picos offers Mexican bowls, burritos and tacos. For a Mediterranean spin on comfort food, try the restaurant, Pom and Honey. The lemon oregano chicken and spicy tzatziki sauce are staples after an afternoon tan with friends. Pop over to Vista Grande for pizza from Hearth, pasta from Noodles or a burger from Brunch. Streats regularly swaps out their menu so keep an eye out for anything from Hawaiian po’boys to tri-tip sandwiches. If your night is running late and you can’t make it to a dining hall before it closes, look no further than Subway. Open 24/7, you can find that go-to sandwich order you’ve had since you were eight years old.

Quick Bites

The quarter system speeds by and it can seem like the day is over before it begins.

No need to fret if you can’t find time to sit down, campus has several places to grab a quick bite before rushing off to the next club meeting or lab. There are four markets sprinkled throughout campus: Market Grande Ave on the bottom floor of Vista Grande, the Market University Union across from the Craft Center, Campus Market near the Agricultural Sciences Building and Poly Canyon Village Market. All have ready to eat options such as sushi, sandwiches and poke bowls. You can also find various snacks such as granola bars, yogurt cups, fresh fruit, candy bars, soda, protein shakes and more. Additionally, Market Grande Ave and Campus Market host two fully stocked delis if you need a breakfast burrito or grilled cheese to get you through your day.

Get into a New Hobby

Climbing

Although the diverse outdoor scene of San Luis Obispo offers trails and beaches for outdoor activities, Poly’s Climbing Park and nearby climbing facilities are also hot spots for recreation. Once seen as a sport limited to mountaintops, rock climbing has evolved into an after-school activity among Cal Poly students. Joining the climbing community can be intimidating at first, but it’s a welcoming and supportive group that embraces new climbers.

want to keep getting better and want to keep reaching goals that you’ve made, but it’s never competitive with anyone else,” Hazel Catley, a construction management junior said. “Everyone is just rooting you on and seeing what you can climb best.”

This kind of encouragement is what makes climbing unique and an easy way to make friends. A popular spot for Cal Poly students to climb is called The Pad. It’s a rock climbing gym located on Ricardo Court, with walls designed for a mix of abilities. You don’t need to make an appointment to visit and climbing

shoes are provided. If The Pad is too far from campus, Poly Escapes Climbing Park is located right next to the Cal Poly Recreation Center. This 42-foot climbing tower and boulder is available to students on weekdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. for free as long as you check in at the Recreation Center desk.

Crocheting

From the comfort of your dorm room, crocheting is a relaxing and accessible craft you can pick up between schoolwork. The motion of weaving provides a way to unwind while making something your own. As a creative outlet or mindful activity, crocheting requires minimal materials, making it easy to take wherever you go. This is why more students are embracing the hobby.

Beginners don’t have to start with complex patterns required for blankets or sweaters, it can be projects as simple as Granny Squares or scarves. With countless tutorials online and opportunities to learn from students, crocheting can be a solo pastime or social activity used to make friends. No matter how you approach it, crocheting has no limits.

Clubs

Cal Poly is home to over 400 student-run clubs, allowing the opportunity to explore all kinds of hobbies. The last day of Week of Welcome offers a club showcase, which is a two-hour-long informational fair with almost all of Cal Poly clubs and organizations.

This opportunity, along with many others throughout the year, is where you can find an interest you didn’t know existed before, or try an activity you’ve always wanted to try.

Whether it’s joining the Sustainable Fashion Club or Salsa Club, there is a club for every interest you hope to learn more about.

Getting involved in a Cal Poly club is one of the best ways to connect with and learn from like-minded peers while exploring your interests. Joining not only enhances your college experience but the hobbies you pursue as well.

Music

As a freshman, living in the dorms can sometimes feel repetitive, making it the perfect time to pick up something new – like learning an instrument. Learning to play guitar is a common instrument that students teach themselves in the dorms. This is because the picking of strings allows for adjusting music to a volume that doesn’t disrupt other students.

In addition, the Music Department and Performing Arts Center is a space where students can develop these musical skills – whether it’s for the stage or personal enjoyment. With various classes in piano, voice, orchestra and guitar, you can further your talents at any level. If you decide to stick to strumming in your room or put yourself out there by performing at a local venue, playing an instrument can bring creative fulfillment that serves as an escape from the stresses of school.

Five Ways to be Involved in SLO's Music Scene

Up & Up SLO

The Up & Up Festival owned by Monster Energy is the biggest college festival tour in the United States, competing with over 50 universities.The goal of the festival is to bring a famous DJ/headliner to the winner’s college town during a 48-hour pre-sale competition. The Festival Series launched in 2016, with headliner Cash Cash.

Since then it has expanded nationwide, featuring other artists like Dom Dolla and 48 | Mustang Media Group

Chris Lorenzo. This year Cal Poly’s ‘Up & Up Festival’ team is competing to bring the famous DJ duo, SIDEPIECE, to the San Luis Obispo community. Up & Up SLO accepts applications twice a year. Typically EDM based, Up & Up hosts different events around campus including pop-up tablings with student ambassador DJ’s, “dayge” pop-ups and even at the Pismo Beach Sand Dunes.

WAV Zine

First started in 2020, a group of Cal Poly students and friends in San Luis Obispo aimed to create a community where everyone is authentically themselves and surrounded with music and arts. Makena Locsin is on the editorial content team for WAV Zine and is currently writing about different events in SLO. “We really do have a thriving music scene within not just the school, but the community itself,” Locsin said. WAV plays a large emphasis on highlighting the voices of students in SLO while hosting house shows, and even hosting small guitar sessions in their Sierra Madre dorm room. “Highlighting that creativity is so important and I think WAV gives you that outlet to do so. It gives you an outlet to share those passions with not only your peers but with the greater community,” Locsin said. Make sure to check out their monthly “What is WAV listening to?” for music recommendations and customized spotify playlists.

House Shows

San Luis Obispo has a thriving house show scene, providing a space for live music and creative expression from students and San Luis Obispo locals. These DIY shows take place in local homes, garages and backyards – featuring a mix of indie, punk, rock and alternative bands. The scene is a staple of SLO’s underground music culture, and provides an alternative to traditional venues and a supportive environment for musicians and fans. Getting involved in the house show scene can be as simple as attending shows, following local bands and collectives on social media including @slo.underground, or connecting with musicians and organizers. For those interested in performing, networking with local artists and reaching out to hosts, can open up opportunities. If you have a space, hosting a show is another way to contribute. Many shows operate through word-of-mouth or private invites, so staying engaged in the community is key. Whether you’re a musician, a fan, or just looking to experience SLO’s underground music culture, the house show scene offers an exciting way to immerse yourself in the live music scene.

KCPR

KCPR 91.3 FM is Cal Poly’s student-run radio station, embracing the “Learn by Doing” aspect of Cal Poly. It provides hands-on experience in broadcasting, music creation, journalism and media production. As a crucial part of Cal Poly’s Mustang Media Group, KCPR provides students with opportunities to develop skills in radio hosting, podcasting, social media management and marketing.

Students can get involved by applying for positions as DJs, content creators or news reporting, making it a great way to gain real-world experience in media and communications. Interested students can check out KCPR’s website or follow their social media pages @kcpr913 for updates on hiring.

Shabang SLO

Shabang is one of San Luis Obispo’s only music and arts festivals – bringing together live music, local artists and a vibrant community atmosphere. It started as a small gathering of friends on top of Cuesta Ridge, and has now grown into a highly anticipated event featuring different musical acts, art installations and food vendors. Students and community members can get involved with Shabang in several ways. Volunteer opportunities allow participants to help with event setup, artist coordination and festival operations while gaining hands-on experience in event management. Those interested in media, photography or social media marketing, can also apply to join the promotional team. Additionally, local artists and vendors can showcase their work by applying for booth spaces. Four Quick Escapes from SLO

San Luis Obispo has plenty to offer, but the Central Coast as a whole has a multitude of beautiful places that many Cal Poly students overlook. From scenic hikes to thousands of years old wind caves, these four day trips provide a quick escape from SLO.

The Rinconada Trail/Mercury Mine

One day trip that is very unique to the area is the Mercury Mine that can be found along the Rinconada Trail. Located in the hills of the Los Padres National Forest and around two miles from Santa Margarita Lake, this hike takes you back in time with rusted-over machinery, old ruins from the foundation and open mine shafts.

times said. “As you climb up the trail, you get to see tons of geodes. Once you finally get to the mine, it’s breathtaking because it’s just a huge gaping hole in the ground.”

Along the mountainside, pieces of the earth have been carved out and huge holes scatter the area.

This is a fairly easy hike, around a quarter mile long. The trail is wide and well-maintained. Once you reach the first fork, make a left, and you will reach the area that contains the old mine machinery. While there are now hundreds of layers of spray paint coated onto the structures, it’s interesting to see all the machinery still there from 65 years ago. The largest structure is a two-story retort, a machine miners used to process the mined mercury.

After reaching this section of the trail, you can climb up the slope behind the machinery to reach the opening of the mine.

Big Falls

Another great spot in the Los Padres National Forest is Big Falls. This hike is great in the summer as it includes two waterfalls that make the perfect swimming hole on a hot day.

This is a 5.3-mile out-and-back trail that is moderately challenging. The trail starts at a trailhead along Upper Lopez Canyon Road, and the first waterfall is around half a mile from the trailhead. This one is smaller, but surrounded by green moss and shrubbery, making for a serene stop on your way to the bigger fall. The upper big fall is a little over a mile from the trailhead and drops 80 feet into a pool. This part of the hike is steeper, but it is completely worth it once you stumble upon the water cascading down into the pool. A steep rock wall surrounds the fall, making it a popular spot for cliff jumping. Even more waterfalls appear along the trail after heavy rain.

This gap funnels strong winds through the canyon, shaping the soft sandstone and, over time, creating the Gaviota Wind Caves. The hike leads people through these natural formations on the mountain, where centuries of erosion sculpted hallows and arches in the sandstone. At the top of the hike, there’s a perfectly carved out window made of stone that frames a view of the ocean.

This is considered a moderately challenging 2.4mile hike near Goleta, around an hour from Cal Poly. The trail begins on a mostly flat path along Gaviota Creek before gradually ascending toward the caves. After about three-quarters of a mile, well-maintained switchbacks lead up the ridgeline to the first wind cave. From there, the trail gets much steeper, with more switchbacks climbing to the second cave, a great place to stop and rest as there isn’t much shade on the rest of the trail.

Most of the elevation gain is in the final half-mile, making the last stretch the most challenging.

Lopez Lake

Lopez Lake is also a great day trip, especially on a hot day. Located just 25 minutes from Cal Poly, the lake has an average year-round temperature of 79 degrees Fahrenheit, making it an excellent spot for various outdoor activities.

The area has a rich history and was once home to the Chumash people, who hunted and fished in the canyons surrounding the lake. Later, ranchers and homesteaders settled in the area, cultivating crops for the San Luis Obispo Mission. In 1969, the construction of Lopez Dam led to the formation of Lopez Lake, now a hub for outdoor recreation.

It can be a tricky place to visit during the winter, as all the rain makes it hard to reach the trailhead.

After turning left onto Upper Lopez Canyon Road, you’ll reach a dirt road, and after around 3.7 miles, you’ll find the trailhead and a small parking area.

If you’re visiting during the rainy season, a fourwheel drive vehicle is a must, as the dirt road includes about a dozen stream crossings. If the water levels are too high, the road may be closed, so check ahead to confirm it’s open.

If you’re looking for a rewarding and refreshing hike that requires a bit of off-roading, be sure to check out Big Falls.

Gaviota Hike & Wind Caves

One of the most unique spots on the list is the Gaviota wind caves. The coast of Gaviota is fairly rugged and undeveloped, making it a gorgeous

Fishing is a major draw, with the lake being best known for the largemouth and smallmouth bass that inhabit the waters. The marina offers boat, water-toy and paddleboard rentals, ensuring many ways to enjoy the water. For those who’d rather stick to land, there are also many hiking and mountain biking trails surrounding the area, including High Ridge, Wittenberg Arm and Duna Vista.

If these activities aren’t enough, the lake also includes Vista Lago Adventure Park and Mustang Waterpark.

Whether you’re looking for a high-energy adventure or a laid-back escape, Lopez Lake offers fantastic outdoor experiences to fill your day.

t Lincoln Market & Deli, you are immediately greeted at the door by an employee, ready to take your order. As you walk through the doors, the inside of the deli provides a welcoming and bright atmosphere.

The other half of the room is made up of shelves stocked with fun knick-knacks, including spaghetti-themed tarot cards, matchbooks, dried flowers and vases. They also have shelves filled with groceries to pair with your sandwich such as chips, cookies, candy bars and drinks.

The deli also offers an outdoor seating area, covered by colorful umbrellas and surrounded by lush greenery.

The sandwich shop has a lengthy and hearty menu with a few stand-out items. One item in particular is the Pesto Primo, a delicious hot sandwich that combines chicken, pesto, provolone, sun-dried tomato, fresh-cut tomato, onion and spinach on toasted sourdough.

The Lincoln Market & Deli staff are known for being friendly and attentive. They are more than willing to offer order suggestions and information on dietary restrictions.

or embrace the dirt and grass. Whether you go with your friends or on a solo mission, it is a great place to go to get a quick breather after a long day. If you choose to stay past dusk, Prefumo Canyon can double as a great stargazing spot.

refumo Canyon allows visitors to view San Luis Obispo with ease. Located off of Los Osos Valley Road on Prefumo Canyon Road, the top of the hill is about a 25 minute drive from Cal Poly’s campus and requires no hiking to get there. The winding well-paved road up is lined by native trees that turn into golden or green rolling hills depending on the time of year. From the top of Prefumo Canyon you can admire many of San Luis Obispo’s peak’s as well as Morro Bay and Morro Rock when there is little to no fog rolling in from the coast.

Sunset Drive-In

he Sunset is such an incredible gem, since it is one of the only 16 drive-in movie theaters left in California. Open since June 1950, Sunset plays new and old movies for $12. They play two movies a night, but you only need to buy one ticket and can stay for both showings. Tune into your car radio, or rent one at the snack shack for a few dollars. Then, simply enjoy a relaxing night of movie-watching with your significant other, friends or roommates.

They are open all days of the week, and their first showing begins at 7 p.m., with the gates opening at 6:30 p.m. They are located at 255 Elks Lane, right off of Highway 101.

Pismo Beach

fter a scenic 20-minute drive down Highway 101, the large, neon Pismo Beach sign by the pier will welcome you to one of the most popular beach towns on the Central Coast.

Pismo Beach offers countless opportunities for fun and relaxation.

in the area. If you’re feeling active, hike Pismo Preserve, walk around the monarch butterfly grove or ride ATVs on the sand dunes. But if you’d rather take it easy, sit down at an oceanside dining venue or find a bench to sit and watch the waves.

There are lots of cafes, restaurants and hotels nestled around the pier, which is the hub of Pismo Beach. You’ll likely see visitors rinsing sand off their feet, dogs walking with their owners and tourists browsing souvenir shops.

You may even be able to spot Pismo clams or humpback whales, just a couple examples of the different Pismo Beach wildlife.

Another popular Pismo Beach activity is surfing, especially for new surfers because of the gentle waves and friendly people, mechanical engineering junior George Konoval said.

“You can learn surfing there as easily as you can become very good at surfing there,” Konoval said. “I’ve seen a lot of sunsets out there. It’s beautiful.”

Serenity Swing

A

walk down Poly Canyon Road unveils a scenic trail with one of the best views of San Luis Obispo from the comfort of a swing – Serenity Swing. From the top, you can see Morro Rock, Bishop’s Peak, Architecture Graveyard and the Cal Poly Campus. A sight that combines the lush hills with the ocean and city.

The serpentine rock is California’s state rock, reflecting light in shades of blue and green along the trail. Although the top is where the notorious swing and panoramic view lie, make sure to take in treasures like the serpentine rock on the way up.

This hike is about four miles long and takes around two hours total to complete, making it a moderately challenging trail that fits easily into your day. The climb only becomes strenuous toward the end, where the final path to the top becomes steep. However, the reward at the top is well worth the effort.

To start this journey, park at the intramural fields by Poly Canyon Village and follow the trail going up Poly Canyon Road to Architecture Graveyard. After you arrive at Architecture Graveyard, stay on the right side of the road where a few houses will appear. Walk down this road until you pass two gates, where you will then continue on the right side. Once you follow this path for a while, you will reach the final gate before arriving at the top.

“My favorite portion has to be as you climb up the trail and get closer to the picturesque view of SLO and deposits of serpentine scatter the path,” Holden Evers, a Cal Poly senior said.

This hike is a must for anyone looking to experience the beauty of SLO from a higher viewpoint.
