In addition to the various events and sessions being held this weekend to teach you about Cal Poly and its many assets, this special edition is also here to provide you with helpful information as well as stories and testimonials from our student writers about their own experiences here at Cal Poly. In these pages, you’ll find information about campus organizations, local businesses and insights into the best places and activities to explore in the hidden gem that is San Luis Obispo. From the charming downtown area with iconic backdrops like the Bubblegum Alley to the gorgeous natural sights along the coast like Pirate’s Cove, there are so many great things to do and places to see here. Open House is a time-honored tradition here at Cal Poly, with its roots stemming from the Poly Royal Rodeo and other historic campus events. THE HISTORY OF CAL POLY’S OPEN HOUSE
W
elcome to Cal Poly’s 28th annual Open House! After two years, Cal Poly is excited to welcome its prospective students on campus for various in person events. There is also a virtual option for students to learn about housing, dining, study abroad and other parts of the Cal Poly experience. Open House is put on by Cal Poly’s New Student and Transition Programs (NSTP) and is meant to introduce prospective students to the university and its many departments and programs. Open House began in 1994 in part as an attempt to replace the fundraising and educational aspects of the Poly Royal Rodeo, which was canceled in 1990 when “partiers got out of hand and erupted into a riotous mob,” vandalizing multiple stores and residences, as reported in 1994 by Mustang News. Of course, the rodeo has since been reinstated and now has an important role in Cal Poly’s Open House weekend.

But before there was Open House or the Poly Royal Rodeo, there was “Farmers’ Picnic,” according to NSTP. On May 24, 1904, roughly 200 visitors came to Cal Poly’s first open house event to tour new buildings, view agricultural showcases and enjoy Cal Poly barbeque. The event, Farmers’ Picnic, quickly became a successful way to draw in visitors annually, and ultimately inspired the Poly Royal event in 1933. When Open House was born in 1994, it was largely inspired by Farmers’ Picnic, Poly Royal, some new events and the addition of Admitted Students’ Preview Day to provide a showcase weekend for the university, according to NSTP. Similar to the last few in-person Open House events in 2018 and 2019, this year’s event will kick off with a “Campus Preview Night at Farmers’ Market” on Thursday, April 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. The weekend-long welcome continues on Friday, April 8 with “Admitted Students’ Discovery Day,” which includes the University Welcome, as well as individualized sessions related to different departments and programs on campus. Finally, on Saturday, April 9, Open House visitors are invited to join the Cal Poly community’s Poly Royal Celebration. LEANING PINE ARBORETUM WHERE? Environmental Horticultural Science unit. Part of the Horticulture Unit Bldg. 48. WHEN? 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, except academic holidays. No admission fee. According to the Horticulture and Crop Sciences website, the “Leaning Pine Arboretum represents a collection of class projects, laboratory exercises and senior projects that have evolved over the past 50 years into the Mediterranean climate garden visitors experience today.”

A STUDENT’S GUIDE TO THE UNDERSTATED SPOTS ON CAMPUS
This hidden gem is located on campus, occupying five acres of land overlooking the palatial mountain peaks and featuring a variety of vegetation from the world’s five Mediterranean climate regions: Australia, California, Chile, the Mediterranean Basin and South Africa. Each climate region is granted its own garden, featuring plants local to that area. The Leaning Pine Arboretum also has the Formal Garden, Primitive Garden and Palm and Aloe Garden available to visitors.
CAL POLY CREAMERY WHERE? The Eugene and Rachel Boone Dairy Science Complex on Mount Bishop Rd. Bldg. 18A. WHEN? Students can create an appointment using the online form to pick up their dairy product of choice. The Cal Poly Creamery has been in business since 1903. It is dedicated to providing and manufacturing quality products while ensuring student employees are using their work hours to “learn by doing.” All of the creamery’s products are “farmstead,” meaning they are sourced from Cal Poly’s own cows in a local pasture across the street from the creamery. You may have seen the creamery’s products before at its designated booth at downtown San Luis Obispo’s Thursday-night Farmers’ Markets. The largely student-run business is known to sell its cheeses and ice cream not only downtown at the farmers’ market, but in select San Luis Obispo markets and in nearby towns.

CAL POLY OBSERVATORY WHERE? Between wings D and E of Bldg. 52. On the Cal Poly map, it is located under building number 52-B.
REMEMBRANCE POND WHERE? O’Neil Green, by the Orfalea College of Business. Originally created in the 1930s, the Remembrance Pond is a place of serenity. The pond was dedicated as a memorial to Ted Howes, the former Ornamental Horticulture Department head. There is even a plaque on the backside of the pond in his honor. A wall of rocks surrounds the backside of the pond, creating a beautiful backdrop for the koi fish that live there. The pond also has plants and a small waterfall, one of the only working water features on campus (the other being the fountain in the Rose Garden). The Remembrance Pond provides a quiet getaway to study and hide away from the stress of school.
WHEN? The Cal Poly Observatory is currently closed for public viewing until further notice due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Cal Poly observatory is a great way to become one with your universe! The hours of the observatory are set for each quarter. In the past, the observatory has held events for the solar eclipses and as a local for fundraisers. Be sure to stay updated as to when it will open again.
POLY PLANT SHOP WHERE? Located at the top of Via Carta Rd. Bldg. 48. WHEN? The Poly Plant Shop is currently closed for the season. However, appointments for in–person visits may be scheduled through its website polyplantshop.com. The Poly Plant Shop is a sanctuary of cut flowers, landscape plants and interior plants. The plant shop gives students the opportunity to work retail in the full-service shop, gaining hands-on experience of garden center management and operations. The shop offers a variety of products, including floral arrangements, bouquets, wearables, plants for your room and soil for composting.

Within my first year in San Luis Obispo, I have found that one of the best ways to adjust is to surround yourself with the local life and scenery. Here is a guide to the best things to do downtown. FOOD 01 BIG SKY CAFE The sky’s the limit at this downtown staple! Big Sky is a farm-to-table restaurant that is known for its local and urban atmosphere. Full of rich, art deco charm, the Fremont Theater has been an iconic part of San Luis Obispo for more than 80 years now. 02 BUBBLEGUM ALLEY Go to Bubblegum Alley and add your chewing gum to its colorful, sticky walls! With more than 70 feet of colorful chewing gum, Bubblegum Alley is a memorable place to go with your friends and leave your mark (literally). 03 FARMERS’ MARKET The weekly Farmers’ Market on Thursday evenings is a great way to support local vendors. Not to mention, it is always a fun time and is a great way to connect to the San Luis Obispo community. More than your average farmers’ market, it features food vendors from popular restaurants all around town, as well as booths offering products from local businesses and even Cal Poly clubs. There is also often live music at the multiblock Thursday evening event. *Note: taking the 4A bus from the Performing Arts Center on campus is a free and easy way to get to the start of the market on Higuera Street.
02 ROCKET FIZZ This retro candy shop is filled with tons of fun memorabilia, tin lunch boxes, magnets and, of course, its impressive array of unique sodas and candies. Unlike most other candy stores, Rocket Fizz offers vintage candies that are harder to find these days like Charleston Chews, Abba Zabba bars, Razzles and more. tarting your freshman year at Cal Poly can be stressful and it can be difficult to navigate the various departments and facilities. At the end of the day though, Cal Poly is made up of people, and there are a lot of people who are more than willing to help you as you navigate college as a first-time freshman. Here are some campus community leaders you should know:
Once a Cal Poly student herself, San Luis Obispo’s mayor Erica Stewart is very involved in university-related issues. In addition to her mayoral duties, Stewart also works three quarters out of the year as the Assistant Director for Personnel and Marketing at Cal Poly’s Campus Health and Wellbeing. Her priorities include affordable housing for students and community members; diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives; and supporting local businesses. Stewart also serves on the board of directors of the Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo (CAPSLO).

If you’re active on any of Cal Poly’s numerous Facebook pages, you’ve probably heard the name Traci Holmes Libby before. Libby is not actually an official Cal Poly staff member, though many confuse her as such due to her expansive knowledge of the university and her active presence online. Libby is actually just the parent of a former Cal Poly student who decided to pay it forward by helping out incoming mustangs in the best way she can. If you’re on any of Cal Poly’s official class pages, look out for update posts from Libby throughout the year on topics from housing to food plans to coordinating rides home for break.

Tess Loarie is the current president of Cal Poly’s Associated Students Incorporated (ASI). ASI is Cal Poly’s student government and is in charge of scholarships and funding for campus organizations, intramural sports, various campus events including therapy dogs, conferences and socials, and more. Though Loarie will soon be succeeded by next year’s ASI President, she will continue to lead the current class of ASI students and is available Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. for office hours in the ASI Business Office in Cal Poly’s University Union.

FUTURE MUSTANGS, Welcome to Open House 2022, the first in-person Open House in three years! Your Cal Poly Journey begins today. Our names are Nan Relan, Emily Taketa, and Isabella Herrin and we are this year’s Open House Co-Chairs. Open House has shaped who we are, whether it be from attending as prospective students, or planning Open House for the next generation of prospective students. We hope that it will have the same impact on you! Open House and Orientation gave us the tools we needed to succeed and thrive at Cal Poly. We have been able to put “Learn by Doing” at the forefront of all we do, all while experiencing professional and leadership development in addition to finding our community. We hope that you find your home throughout Open House weekend and Virtual Open House, whether it be in one of our hundreds of clubs, through one of our many resources, or in the people you meet. We encourage you to explore our events throughout the weekend, where you can head downtown to our Farmers’ Market, meet other students at Friday Nite Invite, see Cal Poly talent at Dexter Stage, and so much more! You can utilize our website and guidebook to truly make the most of your experience, where you will find the full schedule. We have showcased so much of Cal Poly for you during Open House and we hope you make the most of it! Finally, we would like to thank the Open House Leads and Committee, who are the body of student leaders who have been working tirelessly to plan and execute
the 29th annual Open House. This year’s Open House would not have happened if it was not for the work of our Open House Committee, Leads, and New Student and Transition Programs’ professional staff. Each person has played an integral role in making this happen. Many of our student leaders have never seen an in-person Open House, and they took on this challenge with grace and ease. HIDDEN GEMS TO EXPLORE IN SAN LUIS OBISPO
S
tudents and tourists flock to sunny San Luis Obispo not only for its sprawling emerald hills and its eternally warm weather, but also for its pristine beaches. In the shadow of popular beaches such as Pismo and Avila lie troves of hidden gems worth exploring.
MONTANA DE ORO STATE PARK Hidden away south of Morro Bay you will find Montana De Oro State Park in Los Osos. Teeming with golden wildflowers in the spring, the state park’s name comes from the Mancho Montana de Oro, meaning “Mountain of Gold” in Spanish. It is truly one of the most magnificent wonders San Luis Obispo county has to offer, with miles of trails, bluffs, summits, tidepools and beaches. Montana De Oro’s three beaches are Sandspit Beach, Spooner’s Cove and Coon Creek Beach. Visit Hazard Canyon Reef, located at the south end of Sandspit Beach, at low tide to behold some of the most vibrant and colorful tidepools in California. CAYUCOS STATE BEACH Cayucos State Beach is located in a charming little beach town known for its fishing pier and historical buildings. The beach’s mild weather makes it ideal for watersports such as surfing, swimming and tide-pooling. With lifeguards on duty during peak summer months, Cayucos is one of the safer beaches to swim at. The beach is also dog friendly, though dogs are not allowed on the pier. Take a stroll down the long fishing pier or even try your hand at fishing, since no fishing license is required to fish on the pier. The pier is also said to be a prime whale-watching destination. The best time to see gray whales is in March and April, when mothers and calves swim closer to shore during migration. Also watch out for humpback whales during the spring and summer, when migration takes them south to feeding grounds. From the pier, you may also be able to glimpse harbor seals, California sea lions, sea otters and even the occasional orca.
PIEDRAS BLANCAS ELEPHANT SEAL ROOKERY The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery is a stretch of beach right off of U.S. Highway 1, where the public can observe elephant seals in their natural habitat for free. While the San Simeon rookery is open year-round, the best times for viewing are in late January, late April and late October, as these are the months that many seals return to the beach for birthing, molting and mating respectively. CAVE’S LANDING HIKE TO THE PIRATE’S COVE SEA CAVE Towering over the popular Avila Beach is a lesser-known gem. This short hike begins at Cave Landing Road off of Avila Beach Drive, where you can already catch a beautiful ocean view. Turn right at the trailhead to reach the iconic Pirate’s Cove Sea Cave, a gorgeous natural spectacle overlooking the pacific. Allow your eyes to gaze upon shimmering turquoise waters, but beware: if you let them wander too far, you may stumble upon sandy cheeks. THE BEST HIKES IN SAN LUIS OBISPO S
an Luis Obispo is home to a chain of nine volcanic plugs that stretch all the way to Morro Bay. With so many options, it can be daunting to pick one to hike. Of the nine, however, only six are accessible to the public and five are hikable.
BLACK HILL This is the baby of the nine sisters. If you’re in the mood for a quick jaunt, this is the hill for you. From trailhead to summit, you travel less than half a mile and have an elevation change of less than 200 feet. What it lacks in height, Black Hill makes up for with a cool name.
ISLAY HILL This hike is less of a climb and more of a stroll up a grassy hill. With a little under a mile from trailhead to summit, this hike is enough for a brief outing and a nice warm-up for the rest of your day. If you are new to hiking, Islay Hill is a great intro into this rewarding world.

BISHOP PEAK The jewel of the nine sisters, Bishop Peak is the tallest mountain on this list. If you are interested in getting great views of Cal Poly and don’t mind a challenge, Bishop Peak brings all that and more. This hike might equally take your breath away from the exercise and the view. If you are going to climb one of the nine sisters, this is the flagship peak.
CERRO CABRILLO So, you’ve mastered the long trails and the tall peaks and are looking for another challenge? Cerro Cabrillo is the peak for you. This is a challenging hike. The trail is steep with plenty of boulders in the way. Expect to use more than just your feet to get to the top. Once you reach the summit, your reward is a view of the lovely Morro Bay to one side and the rest of the nine sisters to the other.
MORRO ROCK Disclaimer: You will not climb this rock. That’s right, this is not a walk to the summit, but to the base. With a roughly threemile round trip, this hike will take several hours with a gorgeous beach being your reward.
CERRO SAN LUIS OBISPO If you want to spend a good portion of your day hiking, this is the trail for you. Known for its Christmas tree made from string lights in the winter, Cerro San Luis Obispo (commonly referred to as Madonna Mountain) has a lengthy hike with a satisfying summit. While it will likely take you a few hours, the elevation change is smooth and the summit is beautiful.
