A small sign hovers over a doorway on the second floor of the unassuming Graphic Arts building. Here, our newsroom is tucked away — you might even miss it if you didn’t know what to look for. From the outside, you’d never guess that the dull off-white walls of Building 26 contain multiple award-winning, student-run media organizations. Up the steep staircase is a fully operational advertising, marketing and design business, as well as a public relations company. The editorial operation spills out of the original newsroom and into a TV studio on the third floor, right next to the campus radio station, KCPR. Walking into our newsroom on a typical afternoon, you might not realize that Mustang News boasts a staff of more than 50 students who specialize in video, multimedia, writing, web development, design, photography, social media and more.

You also might not realize that this year, we’re celebrating an incredible anniversary: one

century of student news. For 100 years, Mustang News — under all of its previous monikers — has been in print. Generations of student journalists have dedicated their college careers to late-night deadlines, immediate breaking news coverage and a passion for informing their community.

Our community.

If you told the Polygram reporters of 1916 what journalism is like today, they probably wouldn’t believe you. The Internet, interactive graphics, instant video — these were unthinkable concepts when we began production all those years ago. The field of journalism has adapted to the digital revolution, and we at Mustang News have had changes of our own.

Often, we become overwhelmed by these changes. But even though legacy media organizations are still searching for answers, one thing is clear: Our only mission is the same as it always has been — to serve our readers.

That’s you.

I have many goals for this year — and let me tell you, the 201516 staff is a fiery, fiercely talented bunch — but all of these aspirations pale in comparison to our ultimate duty. We exist solely to report the news and inform our audience; in this case, our peers.

Every adjustment that journalists have made in the past century, whether minuscule or massive, has been done with the goal of serving our readers. More immediate news. Transporting viewers to the scene through video.

Demonstrating data through graphics, rather than words.

We don’t know what journalism will look like 100 years from now — to be honest, I’m not even sure what it’ll be in five years. What we do know is that Mustang News will continue creating journalists of the future, graduates who are prepared for jobs that don’t yet exist. We will continue pushing forward into the deep, not fearing change but embracing it. But most importantly, we will continue to fight to inform our community.

Know that we will spend every day in a quiet room hidden in the hallway of Building 26, seeking out innovation. Looking for ways to send accurate news straight to your fingertips. To set the curve. To hold others accountable. To let you know what’s happening, so you can make educated decisions.

If you’re not up to speed on last year’s news, don’t worry.

Mustang News has you covered. Here’s some of the big stories from last year; you’ll be an informed Mustang in no time.

Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) The ASI Board of Directors

approved a resolution to open up course evaluations to students while they pick their classes.

This could provide an alternative to PolyRatings, a site used to publicly evaluate professors. The next step in this issue is asking the university to take a look at the pros and cons as well.

The Board also passed a resolution against mandatory on-campus housing for

sophomores. This came as a relief to students who wanted freedom in picking their living arrangements.

Owen Schwaegerle, an agricultural business senior, was elected ASI president for the coming school year.

At the end of the 2014-15 school year, ASI organized Spring Stampede, where big names such as Sage the Gemini and Hoodie Allen performed for as many as 4,200 Cal

ideas for the Master Plan that included removing agricultural fields considered valuable to the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Science (CAFES).

Students and teachers showed up to listening sessions to voice their concerns over the land being researched, noting the value the land has to CAFES classes.

In the latest version of the Master Plan, released earlier this month, the university removed prime agricultural land from consideration.

In addition, administration came under fire for raises in salary, as many faculty members were upset at the wage gap between top-tier administration employees and other members on university payroll.

Greek life Cal Poly’s greek life had a rougher year than most. With several probations and suspensions as well as new legislation, the greek leaders were in the spotlight.

Pi Kappa Alpha, after party violations and a reported sexual assault, was suspended from campus. Delta Sigma Phi was

disaffiliated due to violations of the Student Code of Conduct and Cal Poly Fraternity and Sorority Life Alcohol and Drugs policy.

Delta Sigma Phi’s suspension was altered slightly by Vice President for Student Affairs Keith Humphrey, who heard the fraternity’s appeal. After a minimum of two years, DSP can reapply for university recognition if all chapter officers have graduated or left Cal Poly.

Pike’s appeal for reinstatement was rejected by Humphrey, who upheld the fraternity’s five-year suspension.

In addition, all greek life was put on probation for 13 weeks, leading to the creation of the Students Taking Action Towards University Safety (STATUS) plan.

Despite these Greek life losses, Cal Poly added a fraternity — Delta Tau Delta — and voted to add two new sororities — Alpha Gamma Delta in 2016 and Delta Gamma in 2018.

Greek life also made efforts to educate its members on sexual assault, and participated in philanthropic events to help further the campus and community.

City Council cracks down on unruly gatherings, allows UPD to enforce one mile off campus Gina Randazzo @CPMustangNews

Just in time to ring in the new school year, the San Luis Obispo City Council unanimously approved two items responding to ongoing noise and unruly behavior complaints in residential areas near Cal Poly.

The two items approved were amendments to the city’s code regarding unruly gatherings — mostly meant to crack down on unregistered musical performances — and an agreement to allow the University Police Department (UPD) to issue municipal code violation citations within a onemile radius of Cal Poly’s campus.

The City Council introduced the items on July 21, adopted them on Aug. 18 and scheduled them to go into effect 30 days later — the Friday before fall classes begin.

The city’s main goals through implementing these changes are to help police better respond to and contain large, out-of-control gatherings and to hold all individuals — not just event hosts and property owners — responsible for city code violations, Mayor Jan Marx said.

After a garage roof collapse at the March 7 party dubbed “St. Fratty’s Day,” where more than 3,000 students gathered at a house on Hathway Avenue, many questioned the effectiveness of the city’s existing policy on unruly gatherings.

Marx, who called the St. Fratty’s Day incident “a very dramatic wakeup call,” was at the forefront of the charge to implement the code changes.

“There are tremendous safety implications when there are so many people inebriated in the

same place,” Marx said. “It was very disturbing to me that the police couldn’t get to people that could have been or were injured because the crowd was so large.”

The agreement to give UPD more authority off campus had been in the works for approximately one year.

Campus police agreement UPD and the San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) have worked together for many years and have had almost no difference in power when it came to enforcing the law. UPD officers have always had the right to enforce California state statutes, just like SLOPD and any other city police department.

“It’s a common misconception,” UPD Commander Brenda Trobaugh said. “SLOPD and UPD have always worked together in

the neighborhoods to keep the community safe. It doesn’t matter who’s on what side of the campus/ city line.”

The only previous difference between the two departments is that UPD did not have the authority to enforce city codes off campus.

UPD now has the authority to issue off-campus citations for violations under five sections of the municipal code: possession of open containers in public or public consumption of alcohol; underage persons in possession of alcohol; noise; unruly gatherings; and miscellaneous prohibitions such as public urination and certain vehicle uses on public property.

Citations under these five sections of the code are $350 for the first offense, $700 for the second and $1,000 for each subsequent

offense, though exceptions may occur.

Unruly gathering law SLO City Council also approved amendments to Chapter 9.13 of the municipal code — the unruly gathering law.

Additions to the definition of an “unruly gathering” include unpermitted live bands, amplified music or DJs; being on a roof not designed for occupancy; and throwing bottles or other objects at other people or law enforcement.

Equally notable, party attendees can now be cited for contributing to an unruly gathering, not just party hosts or property owners.

Officers will be citing people who are contributing to unruly gatherings by participating in behavior such as fighting, urinat-

ing in public, standing on roofs, throwing objects at officers, etc.

Prior to the changes, hosts of unruly gatherings would be fined $700 for the first offense and $1,000 for each subsequent offense. Under the updated ordinance, any contributors could receive an initial fine for $350, a second for $700 and each subsequent violation for $1,000.

Christine Wallace, SLOPD’s community outreach manager, explained that the prior language of the ordinance made it challenging for officers to use.

“This version, with the additions, will allow officers to more effectively address social gatherings that have gotten too large for the party host to manage,” she said, “keep(ing) people and property from injury and damage.”

However, some are not so pleased with the amendments to the ordinance.

“These amendments to the ordinance are in no way fair and reasonable,” said Skyler Schilke, vice president of social relations for Tau Kappa Epsilon. “The fine of $350 for the first offense will make students too scared to leave their house or apartment at all on weekends.”

Computer engineering senior Charles Alexander was even more disgruntled. He penned a petition, what has gathered more than 600 signatures, to the city council to revise several clauses of the unruly gathering ordinance.

Alexander argues that the individual punitive acts that constitute contributing to an unruly

gathering should be outlined in their own chapters, as other college towns such as Santa Barbara and Boulder, Colorado, have written in their city codes.

He says that Chapter 9.13 lists the punishable offenses, but has no reference to where a definition for a particular offense may be found.

“It (would) make it easier for new students to become aware of what isn’t okay,” Alexander said.

Alexander also said the “unpermitted live bands” clause of the ordinance makes musicians a target. Though special event permits are available through the city, applications must be submitted 90 days prior to the applicant’s event.

“The municipal code should either include a reasonable (one month or less of processing) legal means of performing mu-

NEWS | 5 sic or should not restrict music performance until a suitable explanation or solution has been established,” Alexander said.

Like them or not, the amendments to the ordinance and the campus police agreement will be in effect by the time students return to school.

Ultimately, the city’s actions are aimed at promoting safety and personal responsibility, Marx said.

“With this change, I hope students will decide how they want to relate to their community for the next four to six years and decide whether they want to be a positive force or engage in behavior they know is disruptive and dangerous,” Marx said.

“I am hopeful that students, as individuals and as a group, will take more personal responsibility for their actions.”

The college time crunch and two students who make it work

By nature, college life is busy.

When you’re juggling school, work and extracurriculars it’s normal to feel overcommitted.

These two students balance their time while molding their own college experiences based off their interests and needs.

Riata Marinelly Animal science junior Riata Marinelly keeps herself busy working as a full-time technician at Coast Veterinary Clinic in Morro Bay, among other things.

“Even though I’m not a registered vet tech I do everything that one would do, so I take X-rays, I assist in surgeries, I do all animal restraints, I give vaccines, I do nail trims. I kind of do everything that the doctors

don’t do.”

Marinelly works 20 hours a week during the school year.

When she’s not working at the vet clinic, Marinelly fosters her love of animals by playing on the Cal Poly polo team and as a member of the pre-veterinary club. Last winter and spring quarters, Marinelly was enrolled in the foaling enterprise at Cal Poly, where students are trained to care for Cal Poly’s foals and address their basic nutritional needs as newborns.

Enterprise courses like this one give students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world situation.

“We would do overnight shifts like twice a week and stay up ‘til 4 in the morning, watching horses and seeing if they’re going to give birth. We were trained on what to do if something goes wrong, and once they did give

birth we were all assigned a certain foal and basically had to start training it,” Marinelly said.

On top of that, Marinelly works as a social media consultant for Jennifer Wieneke of Along Comes Hope, a nonprofit organization based in San Luis Obispo that provides resources for children diagnosed with cancer and their families. She’s also a member of Alpha Chi Omega.

“I’ve always been insanely busy,” Marinelly said, “Ever since I was little I played two, three, four sports and I’ve always been super involved in leadership.

So for me when I’m not doing a million things I drive myself crazy, so I’m always looking for something else to do, and I just manage it because it’s always been a part of my life.”

Marinelly’s best advice to students is to do it all.

“Just try anything you can

whether it’s joining a sorority or doing an enterprise or doing a club, and outside of that, time-management-wise, school is always No. 1,” Marinelly said. Find a job where they understand that you’re going to college and are going to have a hard time dedicating a lot of hours to a job. Do something within your major so that they understand how academically strenuous it is for you, and surround yourself with people who are just as busy as you are so you don’t get distracted.”

Jaymes Lee Agricultural systems management senior Jaymes Lee began at Cal Poly as an engineer, but switched majors to have more time for sports, studying and work which Lee said “tend to take up every ounce of time that I have.” While he’s held many jobs in his time at Cal Poly, Lee

currently works as a lead supervisor at the University Store and as a research assistant for Future Fuels Club (FFC).

“We try and research and look for new alternative fuels that could possibly be beneficial to the future,” Lee said. “So specifically what I do there is I work on a research team to study algae as a biofuel.”

For his senior project, Lee has proposed to convert a car to run on algae gas.

Lee was also a part of the PolyBuilt Quarter Scale Tractor Design Team during his freshman and sophomore years. Each year, the team builds a tractor for the annual American Society of Biological Engineers’ International Quarter Scale Competition.

“We build a tractor from the ground up every year and we design and fabricate all parts in the student labs,” Lee said.

Lee was also both a Soar and a Week of Welcome leader his sophomore year.

“They did teach me a lot about time management that I didn’t know beforehand, but didn’t really apply until my third year,” he said.

This past school year, Lee was involved with the track team.

“I red-shirted this past year for the track team,” Lee said.

“Coming this year will be the big year to compete and try and go as far as I can. It’s going to be a lot of work, but it’ll be worth it.”

Lee said he would advise students to take advantage of every opportunity.

“It’s just going to be the best time of your life,” he said.

Students put together ‘Disorientation Guide’ to provide awareness to campus community Gina Randazzo @CPMustangNews

Loud, proud and unapologetic: these are the words student writers used to describe the first Disorientation Guide to Cal Poly.

The 68-page guide aims to radically introduce students to social and political ideas and issues that are skimmed over in Cal Poly’s orientation programs, like Soar and Week of Welcome (WOW).

The guide covers a wide range of topics, like LGBTQIAP+ inclusivity, sexual assault, Cal Poly’s beauty standards and race identity, among many others.

This being said, each article in the guide does not reflect the opinions of all of the guide’s contributors. The guide is a collection of individual students’ ideas, beliefs and concerns. It was not created by any official Cal Poly club or group, nor was it endorsed by any faculty or administrative member.

Matt Klepfer, Queer Student Union President and founding contributor to the Disorientation Guide, said that much of the reason Cal Poly needs this guide is because its students often lack social and political awareness.

“They, like many other people in this country, lack awareness on the issues that face people who are largely or partly excluded or discriminated against in the white supremacist, imperialist, capitalist, able-bodied, heteronormative, cisnormative, patriarchy that we live in,” Klepfer said.

One of the Disorientation Team’s goals is to urge students to understand that they can make a difference when it comes to these issues on campus, no matter how small that difference might be.

Business administration sophomore Kelsey Zazanis wrote an article in the guide entitled “Don’t F*cking Say These Words: Words Worse than F*ck,” that addresses harmful and offensive language that has become normalized in our culture.

“Removing certain words from your vocabulary is such a small step that can make a huge difference in creating inclusive environments,” Zazanis said.

The guide also aims to help students who don’t fit the mold of the general population.

Art and design sophomore Lauren Goldenberg created the cover art for the guide. She explained that through her piece, she wanted to capture the lone-

liness and fear that exclusion and difference can foster.

“Sure, being different and unique is cool and it makes us who we are, but this isn’t about having blue hair or wearing mismatched patterns of thrifted clothing,” she said. “The often lonely feeling that comes along with it is unacceptable.”

The guide also offers lists of resources and recommendations for students to take advantage of, such as campus clubs, counseling and crisis centers such as SAFER, and courses and professors.

Another article in the guide focuses on New Student and Transition Programs at Cal Poly and suggests ways to make Soar and WOW more inclusive of students of color and students that fall under the LGBTQIAP+ umbrella.

Ultimately, the guide serves to get students to stand up and speak out when it comes to injustice on campus and to help all students, especially those who are embarking on a completely new and often difficult journey at Cal Poly.

Because the project was self-funded, the Disorientation Team could only afford to print approximately 100 physical copies of the Disorientation Guide.

However, it can be read online.

Master Plan updates include removal of hotel, addition of residential neighborhoods Kayla Missman After input from thousands of community members, Cal Poly has released its latest updates to the Master Plan.

Notable updates include the removal of the planned hotel and conference center, as well as keeping the Leaning Pine Arboretum and prime agricultural lands as they are.

Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong said the university opted out of some profitable options, such as the hotel and conference center, partially because the profits were not a strong enough reason to overcome the educational benefit of the areas to be built on.

Long-term academic projects like agricultural experiments are important, he said, and the university did not focus entirely on money in constructing the new plan.

To Armstrong, the most exciting aspect of the new plan is

the student housing and everything that makes students want to live on campus, including the Creekside Village facilities.

Residential neighborhoods The freshman core will be completed with Housing South and additional housing behind the red brick residence halls, freeing up Poly Canyon Village and Cerro Vista for sophomores.

There will be another option for housing — residential neighborhoods which will primarily provide space for non-students or nontraditional students. This area could be filled with condominium complexes for faculty and staff, graduate students and student families, Armstrong said.

To build these facilities, Cal Poly will partner with a private entity, bringing in revenue from the land lease.

The lands to be built on are not

currently developed, with the exception of the track. A track will be built in a new location before the construction on that residential neighborhood begins.

The goal of adding residential neighborhoods is to help recruit and retain employees. Development of this site is still subject to detailed analysis and would occur in phases, according to a press release from the university.

Hotel and conference center The hotel and conference center has been removed from this version of the Master Plan for several reasons. For one, the university is still undecided on adding a tourism and hospitality academic program and curriculum — though even with that program, a hotel is not guaranteed.

The professional planners working on the Master Plan said the hotel might not be a feasible idea,

@KayMissman Armstrong said, especially with the agricultural land out of consideration. With new hotels in the city as well, one on campus was deemed unnecessary for now.

Prime agricultural land Feedback from the community contributed to the removal of potential renovations on agricultural land, Armstrong said, but there were other feasibility factors that solidified the decision. He appreciated the comments from concerned students and said he was “very impressed” by their professionalism.

Armstrong wants a process just like this, he said — one in which students and the community provide feedback, and the university adapts its plans to take their points into consideration.

Leaning Pine Arboretum The university received commu-

nity feedback about the Leaning Pine Arboretum, as well. The plan was to move it to another location, but planners were unsure if the Cal Poly community would allow them to remove the original arboretum. Its accessibility will be enhanced, though, with an entrance near Poly Canyon Village.

The greenhouses will still be moved, but not until the new and improved ones have been built.

It’s important to note, Armstrong said, that nothing will be taken down until the new facility has been built, so there are no gaps in education or use of the facility.

The same goes for the track and aerospace hangar.

Corporation Yard The Corporation Yard will be moved near the dairy facilities, freeing up 10 acres of space closer to the core of campus. The new location for the Corporation

Yard could house businesses, as is currently the case in Technology Park at the corner of Mt. Bishop Road and Highland Drive.

Year-round planning In an effort to focus on more pressing issues, Armstrong has halted planning the possibility of a year-round schedule. Though he still believes that academic schedule is a more efficient use of the facilities, he wants all university resources to be focused on pertinent initiatives, such as the Master Plan, diversity and campus climate.

One noteworthy renovation — which is not part of this version of the Master Plan, and will be approved ahead of the rest of the mentioned renovations — is that of VG Cafe, which will be replaced with a three-story Continued on page 11

building that can feed 30 percent more students.

The new building will be funded through the Cal Poly Corporation, meaning student fees will not go toward its construction. However, pur-

chases made at the dining hall will go toward offsetting development costs.

The university has worked with city leaders throughout the planning process, and Armstrong is optimistic about their collaboration and cooperative relationship. Cal Poly needs to balance sensitivity to the surrounding

NEWS | 11 community’s needs with keeping the university’s promises to its patrons, he said.

Community members will be allowed to participate in open discussions on the Master Plan this fall. Administrators hope to have a preferred plan set in place by November or December.

Following the finalized plan, a team will work on the Environmental Impact Report (EIR), a process that typically takes six months. The EIR will then be open for review.

Since Cal Poly doesn’t want the discussion to take place over summer, administrators will wait until Fall 2016

to receive feedback. The minimum amount of time for feedback required is 45 days, though Armstrong said the university plans to take the Master Plan and EIR to the Board of Trustees in Spring 2017.

‘Exciting’ large sunset concert planned for fall Brendan Abrams @brenabrams

In the coming months, look no further than our Cal Poly’s campus for quality extracurricular entertainment.

This Fall, ASI looks to build on the success of last year’s Spring Stampede by hosting exciting, innovative events that appeal to a wide range of students.

Concerts tend to garner the most interest from the student body, so ASI is looking to go bigger and better than in the past.

Missi Allison-Bullock, ASI Program Coordinator, said a sizable sunset concert is in the works.

While the specific genre has yet to be determined, it will likely stay along rock or alternative lines.

“We did hip-hop for (Spring Stampede) primarily, so we’re looking to do something a little bit different this time,” said Allison-Bullock. “We want to mix it up for the students.”

In addition to the sunset con-

cert, ASI will hold multiple smaller concerts in the UU plaza. Those performances might not enjoy the name-recognition draw of international superstars, but they are intended to showcase local talent, including that of Cal Poly students.

The musical productions might not end up being the proverbial stars of the Fall ASI show. Allison-Bullock said that one of the focal points of the schedule is a brand-new type of multi-day event around Halloween. “(We want to) make something large and hopefully really exciting for the students happen on that weekend,” she said.

Halloween is still in the planning stages, so nothing is set in stone, but expect to find a wide variety of activities in and around the UU. Those activities may include something intriguingly referred to as “iceless” ice skating.

Quality entertainment does come with an environmental responsibility, after all.

How to balance school, social life and sleep Madi Salvati @MadiSalvati

No amount of PowerPoints, pamphlets or programs can emphasize the importance of being a balanced student.

But when you sit down to listen to yet another speech about the consequences of pulling all-nighters, you no doubt start to think about what you’ll have for dinner that night.

You’ve heard it all before.

As a new school year unfolds, you have a lot of chances to actually maintain a balanced schedule and not just talk about it.

Balancing school, sleep and social life are three huge aspects of keeping your head above water.

Cassie Pitkin, an academic adviser for Mustang Success Center, said it’s important to recognize that in college, you have more free time.

“Know how much time you have out of the classroom,” Pitkin said.

When it comes to balancing school, Pitkin recommended reviewing lecture notes shortly after class, so you won’t forget specifics.

Eric Chau, career counselor for the Freshmen Focus Team, said that those who manage their time well usually enjoy more of a balanced, healthier and successful college experience.

“Identify everything you need to manage,” Chau said. “Both your obligations, such as studying 2535 hours a week, and things you would like to do yourself.”

As for sleep, hitting the snooze button 1,000 times in the morning won’t buy back that all-nighter.

“You can’t rely on six cups of coffee to get you through the day,” Pitkin said.

A result of being unbalanced and overloaded is lack of sleep. You’ll take notice of this as you are sitting in Sandwich Factory downing your fifth cup of Mocha Extreme.

“Recognize the different aspects of your life that

contribute to your well-being,” Chau said. “Some of the most common themes are physical, mostly involving sleep.

Social life also plays into staying balanced and can often make the greatest impact on your schedule, especially when college is hyped up to be one big party.

“At different times in our lives we are pulled towards different priorities,” Chau said. “You may not get to socialize as much during finals week, but by managing your time and seeing the whole picture you may come to realize you will have more time to socialize after finals week.”

Having a social life also means, for quite a few people, being present on social media.

“Make sure you are using social media at a time that is productive,” Pitkin said. “Everyone is going through their own journey and there’s no need to compare.”

When you are just sitting down to study for a midterm the next day and you know your sleep will be minimal, don’t worry about what others are doing.

Have no fear of missing out when your academic career is at stake.

Tyler Lee, a community adviser for Cerro Vista apartments this past school year, recommended planning out your schedule far in advance.

“It is good to plan out your whole day so that you know what you are doing every hour,” Lee said. “And sometimes that means planning a week in advance.”

There’s nothing wrong with having a structured schedule clear for the next few hours or days. This kind of planning can help you set aside the time you need to study, sleep and socialize.

“It’s important to know your priorities as well as make sure you do not overcommit,” Lee said. “It is also good to be as efficient as possible.”

With that in mind, the moment you begin feeling overwhelmed by the last nine pages of lecture notes you just scribbled, or the fact that you got three hours of sleep the night, take heart in having a schedule and sticking to it.

Cal Poly alumna launches community cookbook Michelle Zaludek @michellenistic

Santa Monica, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle all have at least one local cookbook, and now San Luis Obispo County will join the club.

Kendra Aronson, a 2009 Cal Poly alumna with a degree in modern languages, has self-published a farmers’ market

cookbook, bursting with recipes and stories that highlight locally grown food and the people who make it.

Aronson worked on “The San Luis Obispo Farmers’ Market Cookbook: Simple Seasonal Recipes & Short Stories” for more than two years, conducting interviews, writing, visiting farms, taste testing, food styling, photographing and designing all on her own.

“I fell in love with the market when I went to Cal Poly,” Aronson said. “I thought (the cookbook) would be a great way to celebrate that.”

The cookbook turned out to be a wild success. With help from 418 backers on Kickstarter, it reached about $26,700 in a month — more than twice the original posted goal of $12,000.

At a workshop put on by the Makeshift Society in San Francisco, Aronson said she was encouraged to seek options for self-publishing.

“It was there that I learned the pros and cons of going through a publishing house or doing it yourself,” she said. “Ultimately, it made the most sense to publish myself.”

This was largely because Aronson wanted to maintain control of the cookbook.

“I really wanted it to be my vision,” she said. “I didn’t want to give up creative control. Even though it took longer, it was worth it.”

To gather the recipes and interviews, Aronson frequented farmers’ markets in the county and approached individual vendors and farm-to-table chefs.

Lori Heal, owner of Mama’s Preserves, said Aronson came to her with the idea of incorporating Heal’s jams into the cookbook.

“She’s just like a ray of sunshine,” Heal said. “I just hit it off with her right away.”

The cookbook features 60 recipes, most of which were provided by about 40 different food growers and artisans across the Central Coast. The recipes are organized by season — with 15 recipes per season, which are then subdivided into recipes for breakfast, light bites, lunch, dinner and dessert. The cookbook also includes 40 short stories, interviews and profiles of farmers, food artisans and farm-to-table chefs.

“We have the ability, and really, the honor, to shake the hand that feeds us here on the Central Coast,” Aronson said.

With about 20 weekly farmers’ markets across the county, Aronson emphasized that everyone should be taking advantage of farm-to-table eating options.

By doing so, she said San Luis Obispo County can continue to grow a “vibrant food community.”

“They put so much care into their products and we’re lucky enough that we can meet them and support them,” Aronson said.

“It’s very important because right now, it’s very easy to go to a grocery store and pick everything up,” said Julia Gomez, owner of Julia’s Juices. “But where else can you get things as fresh as at a farmers’ market?”

There’s also a prominent interconnectivity between vendors that Aronson found to be particularly important because it enforces a sense of community. Aronson wanted to highlight this through the profiles, interviews and short stories in her cookbook.

Gomez, for example, has a brick-andmortar juice shop in Grover Beach and is a regular vendor at farmers’ markets.

When Aronson approached her about the cookbook more than two years ago, she learned that Gomez’s entire family works together to make the business a success.

“My husband grows all the produce, and I’m the one who juices all of our stuff and my kids sell it,” Gomez said. “We grow it, juice it, sell it and everything else goes to our chickens.”

Heal said that agriculture is a family business for her as well. She began working at the markets about 30 years ago with her father, a farmer, and began making jams about 17 years ago.

“I love what I do,” Heal said. “I’m from a berry family … We were one of the first ones to bring blueberries into the (San Luis Obispo County) farmers’ markets.”

Aronson said that interconnectivity reaches far and deep. Vendors at the farmers’ markets make close relationships with the people they sell to, whether they’re for a home or a restaurant.

“You see the same people who have been coming back,” Heal said. “And the relationship you build with people is really rewarding.”

While the project was enjoyable for Aronson to work on, she’s happy that the cookbook is close to being released.

“I’m just super, super excited for the cookbook,” Aronson said. “I’m really blown away by all of the pre-order sales, and all of the community support and the community excitement.”

Aronson’s cookbooks were available for pre-sale in pledge packages during the Kickstarter campaign, which ended in August. Hopeful buyers will now have to wait until the cookbook’s official release this winter. Find it in local shops and online through Aronson’s website in December.

It’s been a long week. Three tests, four essays and an absolutely cruel and unusual amount of reading. You need to treat yourself. Get away from studying for just a day and have some fun.

When you’re ready to dig yourself out from under that pile of textbooks, here are few options always waiting around San Luis Obispo County.

Montaña de Oro State Park If you’re feeling the call of the wild, Montaña de Oro State Park is a good place to answer it. The state park is thriving with wildlife, and in about 8,000 square feet of cliffs, beaches, tide pools and canyons you can expect to find a little bit of everything.

Montaña de Oro State Park is also the home of Spooner’s Cove, a relatively small and quiet beach tucked near the park’s campsites.

The park has campgrounds and miles of trails fit for hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding. Admittance is free during the day and a regular campsite is about $25 for the night. If you feel like continuing your adventure afterward, Montaña de Oro State Park is also near Morro Bay State Park, the Elfin Forest in Los Osos and the Los Osos Oaks State Reserve.

Take a tasting With tastings around almost every corner, there’s ample opportunity to get away and try all sorts of food and drink.

There’s the obvious, wine, which can be planned with the San Luis Obispo Wine Country Association’s winery map on www.slowine. com/. There’s beer tasting, which can be planned with the Wine

Country Beer map on its website. You can also sample some of Downtown San Luis Obispo’s best meals with Central Coast Food Tours on its website. Or you and friends can come up with a customized tasting tour — farmers markets (we have five weekly, which can be found online), coffee and even cheese are all on the table.

Avila Hot Springs Taking a dip in the Avila Hot Springs is a good way to ease the tension out of your back after spending the whole day hunched over reading. The natural mineral hot springs, established in 1907, is situated close to both Avila Beach and the Bob Jones City to Sea Bike Trail, so you have the opportunity to create an all-day adventure.

The hot springs run from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday as well as Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Prices vary depending on how long you intend to soak, ranging from $6-10. Avila Hot Springs also offers spots for tent camping at $45 per night, which includes access to the pool and hot springs.

Leaning Pine Arboretum If you need a rapid change of scenery, Leaning Pine Arboretum is around the corner. Cal Poly’s arboretum is quiet space with fresh air, great for a quick getaway with a hike or picnic.

The arboretum stands on five acres of land that overlook the campus. It features 11 gardens arranged by region and plant type, which can change seasonally. Admittance is free, and the space is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, near the Environmental Horticultural Science Unit.

How to get on your professor’s good side Will Peischel @cpmustangnews

If there was one nice thing about high school, there was an entire slew of people there to ensure that your (much shorter) list of responsibilities was completed.

Mom makes sure you’re out of bed in time, the English teacher is concerned that you weren’t in class last Friday. Now, the only things you can rely on are your alarm clock and yourself.

It turns out there really is no laundry fairy.

Welcome to college, it’s great.

That said, if you can’t fill the gap formerly occupied with the people who care about your well-being with self-reliance, you’ll be in trouble.

Now, one of your important responsibilities is taking classes seriously. Part of that is establishing a good relationship with your professors.

Believe it or not, professors are humans, too. While professors have different expectations and styles of teaching, some things are intuitively universal, as explained by English professor Regulus Allen.

“Just the basics: attendance, paying attention, following the syllabus — I don’t think anything extraordinary,” she said.

That sentiment is pretty consistent among professors. The consensus is that teachers want to connect with their students, and know that what’s being lectured is being internalized. It also shouldn’t come as a surprise that professors can tell when students don’t care, or feign it, at least according to German professor Christian Anderson.

“The ones who make eye contact and nod are by and large the best,” he said. “But there’s a group of fakers out there who someone

has taught to maintain eye contact and nod, but on the inside they’re playing Angry Birds without thinking anyone’s knowing it.

The trick now is to separate the real ones who are actually paying attention and has thoughts in class from the zombies who just fake it.”

Beyond the bare minimum, what level of friendship should exist between a student and professor, in an environment that’s less structured than the dynamic between a student and primary school teacher?

Allen and Anderson both said they prefer to keep a relationship professional, without any contact outside of the classroom.

“It’s establishing a professional relationship, like if you were starting a job or anything else,” Allen said.

Anderson echoed Allen’s sentiments.

“If the professor is teaching and the student is learning and growing, then it’s a good relationship,” he said. “If that means that at some end of the day the professor is having a beer with a student at Froggies or someone is invited to a graduation party, good for them. On the other hand, there are professors like myself who want no relationship with students outside the classroom — good for us.”

It’s also important to take a class seriously, regardless of its relevance to your major. Speaking personally, some of the best classes I’ve ever taken have been general education classes (shout out to History 221 with Grant Nebel).

As a German professor, a large proportion of Anderson’s classes are taught to students whose major is not German. If it were up to him, students wouldn’t graduate without a mastery of something

besides their primary major.

“We are not a career training institute,” he said. “We are a polytechnic, comprehensive university and so in that it’s just nonsense that anyone wants to

ask why you should do things that don’t help with job training. You don’t go to a college that trains you to use an 18-wheeler or a welding apparatus.”

According to Anderson, there’s

no such thing as a university student without a wide range of intellectual experiences.

“In my mind those will go everywhere from yoga to athletics to music and dance,

and certainly humanities and science and engineering and architecture,” he said.

In the end, it’s simple. Go to class, show interest and don’t be afraid to broaden your horizons.

The Cal Poly football team will only play five home games this season. The team kicked off conference play with a 20-19 victory at Montana on Sept. 5.

During Mustang Family Weekend on Oct. 24, Cal Poly will host Portland State for it homecoming game.

The men’s soccer team began its preseason on Aug. 22, competing against teams like UCLA and Santa Clara before beginning league play. October will see the continuation of the biggest rivalry in college soccer — last year, UC Santa Barbara took the

upper hand in the Blue-Green Rivalry against the Mustangs, finishing off the two seasonal matchups with a victory. This season, Cal Poly will look to recapture rivalry bragging rights on Oct. 17 against the Gauchos. They will face off again at UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 24.

The women’s soccer team will play its conference opener at UC Davis on Oct. 1, with four conference games at home throughout the season. Its final home game is set for Senior Day on Nov. 1.

This year’s June draft saw six Mustangs selected in addition to three high school players who signed letters of intent to play at Cal Poly. Coming off consecutive seasons that warranted All-Big West Conference First-Team selections, starting second baseman Mark Mathias was the first Mustang chosen in the third round by the Cleveland Indians.

The San Diego Padres selected Mathias’ partner up the middle and reigning Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year, starting shortstop Peter Van Gansen in the 12th round.

Brian Mundell, Zack Zehner, Casey Bloomquist and Danny Zandona were the other four Mustangs selected in the draft.

Because of a mediocre 27-27 record in 2015, many of these players flew under the radar in the recent draft. The early minor league success of players such as Mathias, Van Gansen and Zehner is a sure sign there are more things to come from this class of players.

Similar types of successes can be seen from the historic 2014 squad that sported a 47-12 record on their way to securing the second-best winning percentage in all of Division 1 for that year. ting average that hovers around .320 in High-A ball for the San Diego Padres.

Chris Hoo, Matt Imhof and Reed Reilly have also shown promise while riding the buses of minor league baseball.

Hoo, the former catcher, has shown flashes of the base hitting backstop he came to be known as for the Mustangs within the Miami Marlins minor league system. Imhof, the highest Mustang chosen in the 2014 draft with a second round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies, currently has a sub 4.00 ERA in High-A ball.

If this minor league jargon sounds confusing to you, think of each class of baseball as a position at a corporation. Promotion is achievable if you perform well at work, and those that perform quicker make their way up the corporate ladder in no time. But reaching the Majors is no cakewalk, the competition from just as talented players from around the globe makes it a career milestone in and of itself.

This is why we should appreciate the current MLB careers of Cal Poly grads Logan Schafer, Bud Norris, Kevin Correia and Casey Fien.

All four players have played in the majors in 2015: Schafer with the Milwaukee Brewers, Norris with the Baltimore Orioles, Correia with the Philadelphia Phillies and Fien with the Minnesota Twins.

Norris is perhaps the most well known of the bunch, compiling a 15-8 record with a 3.65 ERA in 2014 while he held down a crucial rotation spot for an improving Orioles roster.

This year has not been as kind to Norris; a high ERA and an even higher annual salary ($8.8 million) in 2015 had the Orioles shopping around for trade opportunities. With nowhere to go, Norris was designated for assignment in late July and was released by the organization in August, a humbling experience that happens often in today’s major leagues.

ing to hold down roster spots as the season winds down, a couple of past Mustangs have long since established their Major League dominance: Ozzie Smith and Mike Krukow.

Smith came to San Luis Obispo in 1974, attending Cal Poly on an academic scholarship before he decided to walk on to the baseball program. When the starting shortstop suffered an injury in the middle of the season, Smith filled in and flourished. Learning to switch-hit from coach Berdy Harr, Smith ended up setting school records in both at bats and stolen bases.

He came to be known as “The Wizard” for his defensive prowess and magical athleticism. Combining backhands with the occasional back flip, watching Smith in his prime for the St. Louis Cardinals was pure entertainment.

Again Smith broke records, this time for most career assists in the MLB and most career games at shortstop in the National League. Smith’s bust is displayed in Cooperstown’s famed Baseball Hall of Fame.

name to many fellow Giants fans, but back in the day he was a young catcher attending college for the first time at Cal Poly. A smart switch to the mound yielded great results for Krukow as his career ERA of 1.94 still tops the Cal Poly record books.

Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 8th round of the 1973 MLB Draft, Krukow’s career in the Majors spanned 14 seasons. In 1986, Krukow collected 20 wins for the San Francisco Giants and finished the year third in the National League

Cy Young Award race. Krukow’s post-playing life is perhaps more notable as he makes up half of Kruk and Kuip, the color commentating couple with the most chemistry of any major league broadcast.

It’s no surprise that Cal Poly players go on to play professional ball. California is a hot bed of baseball talent and our school is right in the middle of it. If the Mustangs keep up with their current trajectory of academic notoriety, athletic programs such as baseball will see an influx of top talent, which means current head coach Larry Lee and company will keep churning out big leaguers.

Cal Poly athletics: What to expect this fall Ayrton Ostly @CPMustangSports

Football The 2014 season was one of what might have been for the Mustangs, as they stood at 6-3 with a 5-1 mark in the Big Sky Conference only to drop two of the last three games to close out the season.

Seventh-year head coach Tim Walsh hopes the defense can make up for starters lost to graduation and improve on last year’s 7-5 finish.

“No question, the defensive side needs to grow dramatically with the personnel,” he said before spring camp.

Walsh and defensive coordinator Josh Brown will look to solidify replacements for First-Team AllBig Sky Conference linebackers Nick Dzubnar and Cameron Ontko, who graduated and currently play for the NFL’s San Diego Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, respectively.

Starting safeties Jordan Williams and Dave Douglas and linemen Chris Lawrence and Chris Judge all graduated as well, leaving six returning starters on that side of the ball.

On the offensive side, the Mustangs return nine starters, including all five starting linemen as well as quarterback Chris Brown. The unit finished first in rushing yards, second in total yards and third in scoring in the Big Sky conference.

Walsh highlighted Brown’s progress as the key to the offense this fall.

“He had an absolutely great year as a junior,” he said. “If we get him to play as well as last year, we will be successful.”

Running back Kori Garcia, the only Cal Poly player named to the Preseason All-Conference team, figures to be important to success on offense as well.

The Mustangs opened the season

Sept. 5 at Montana.

Men’s soccer 2015 will mark the start of a new era for the Mustangs as last season’s roster remains largely intact but under the direction of new head coach Steve Sampson.

Sampson was announced as head coach last December following an 8-7-4 season under interim coach Phil Ruskin. This will mark his first head coaching job since being released by L.A. Galaxy in 2006.

Ruskin has coached on every level and led Santa Clara to an

NCAA men’s title in 1989. He coached the U.S. Men’s National Team from 1995-98 and the Costa Rican National Team from 200204, and coached Galaxy from 2004-06.

This year’s team returns two members of 2014’s NSCAA AllFar West Region team in goalkeeper Wade Hamilton and midfielder Chase Minter, and welcomes five new players for this season as well.

One of the new players, defender Bjorn Sandberg, transferred from Oregon State. Sampson hopes he “will compete to anchor the center of our defense.”

The Mustangs started regular season games with a home matchup against UNLV on Friday Aug. 28. Big West Conference play doesn’t start until October, when the Mustangs look to improve on last year’s seventh-place finish.

Women’s soccer Head coach Alex Crozier, in his 23rd season on the sideline for the Mustangs, was pretty clear about what the team needed to work on in preparation for this upcoming season.

“Playing in the spring, it was more about attacking,” he said

following the five-game exhibition season in April and May. “Getting the attack, getting more confident, and just keeping the ball in possession.”

The team went 4-1-0 in exhibition play this spring and spent time training to make the offense more dynamic.

“Our players are starting to move off the ball a little bit more,” Crozier said. “Our backs are finding there’s a lot more movement off the ball, and really what we’re looking to do is use the ball as a decoy for what we can do off the ball.”

This year’s team returns many of the key players from last season’s squad that made it to the semifinals of the Big West Championship. Senior forward Elise Krieghoff had 14 of the team’s 32 goals last season, best in the conference, on her way to her third consecutive All-Conference First Team.

Junior forward Megan Abutin was named First Team All-Conference as well after leading the conference in assists (12) and finishing fifth in goals (7).

ond Team All-Conference honoree last season, returns this season after leading the conference with 10 wins and notching 78 saves — good enough for second in the Big West. Returning starters given All-Big West Second Team honors include junior midfielder Lydia Anderson and senior defender Robin Mertens.

With a squad that also fields two All-Big West Freshman Team honorees (midfielders Emily Hansen and Gianna Rosati) from last season, Crozier looks forward to a building on last season’s performance.

“We had a really good season in the fall,” he said, “but we really didn’t reach our potential enough.

So we talked with the team about going from being a good team to a great team.”

The Mustangs began the regular season Friday Aug. 21 at the University of San Francisco.

Sam Crosson saw some slight regression in his team last season, as the team finished 9-17 and 4-12 in conference. But the team is young and look to improve on last year’s performance.

Outside hitter sophomore Raeann Greisen was named to the All-Big West Freshman Team after finishing fifth in conference in kills (359) and fourth in kills per set (3.55) last season. Fellow sophomore Taylor Nelson led the team and was fifth in conference with 880 assists last season, and the two can build on that success in their second collegiate season.

Also returning is senior libero Nicole Kessler, who was second in the Big West in digs (444) and digs per set (4.40) last fall. One of only three seniors on the team, Kessler will provide veteran experience and leadership.

Many of the players spent the spring competing in Cal Poly’s second season of beach volleyball and finished with a 1-12 record.

The Mustangs began the season Aug. 28 at the San Jose State Invitational at San Jose State University.

Cross-country This season, the Mustangs return a majority of their best runners from a runner-up finish in the Big West Cross-Country Championships in 2014.

The women’s side is led by junior Ashley Windsor, who ran to eighth in the 6K at the Big West Championships last October. Close behind her was sophomore Sydney Szabo. The two of them were the best finishers in the NCAA West Regionals last November.

Joining Windsor and Szabo as returning standouts from last season are seniors Meghan Breadmore and Sara Van Dyke, giving the team strong runners with both experience and youth.

For the men’s side, junior Clayton Hutchins finished sixth last October in the Big West 8K Championship, followed by senior Luis Morales (seventh) and junior Dimitri Voytilla (eighth). The trio also had the best times for the Mustangs at the NCAA West Regional and look to continue that success this season.

Cal Poly’s fall sports programs have gotten off to a successful start in 2015. All teams are sporting a .500 or higher winning percentage thus far in their respective seasons.

Looking to rebound from its 9-17 season a year ago, Cal Poly’s women’s volleyball team is off to a hot 7-2 start. The team finished 2-1 in each of its first two tournaments of the year at Baylor University and in Portland.

Freshman of the Week honors.

The Mustangs’ women’s soccer team started the season 3-2-2 and has racked up two straight wins over Fresno State (4-0) and San Jose State (2-1). Freshman Caitlyn Kreutz leads the team with four goals, though Cal Poly’s all-time leading goal scorer Elise Krieghoff has scored just once so far.

The men’s soccer team began the season 3-1-1 behind new coach Steve Sampson, the former head of the United States men’s national team. The team’s wins came over University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Air Force and Seattle University.

Senior Matt LaGrassa leads the team thus far with two goals.

Men’s soccer continues its season this Friday at UCLA, the No. 8 team in the nation.

Women’s cross-country began the season with an undefeated 2-0 start, taking home wins at both UC Santa Barbara’s Lagoon Open and the Fresno State Invitational. Cal Poly runners took the first four spots at the Lagoon Open as sophomore Sydney Szabo took home the individual win.

Junior Ashley Windsor led the team with her third place finish at the Fresno State Invitational.

Freshman Peyton Bilo finished as Cal Poly’s second runner in each of the first two meets.

Cal Poly’s men’s cross-country team also looks strong despite

its 1-1 start. Competing in the same two meets as the women, the men finished second in the Lagoon Open and won the Fresno State Invitational. Junior Swarnjit Boyal also finished second individually in the Lagoon Open and won the Fresno State Invitational.

The football team is off to a 1-1 start and has risen to the No. 18 ranking in the FCS Coaches’ Poll.

The team began the season with a late, come-from-behind upset over Montana, who was one week removed from knocking off the top ranked FCS team in the country, North Dakota State.

College Sports Madness named Cal Poly linebacker Tu’uta Inoke the FCS national Defensive Player of the Week for his 16 tackles and two forced fumbles in the win against Montana. Similarly, Continued on page 31

The Mustangs received their first loss of the season last weekend after traveling to Arizona State. Though Arizona State was heavily favored, the Sun Devils couldn’t pull away until mid-

way into the fourth quarter en route to a 35-21 defeat of the Mustangs. Cal Poly looks to continue its success at home this week as they host No. 11 Northern Iowa on Saturday.
