Muskingum IMPACT: A Year of Innovation and Expanding Our Footprint Dear Muskingum Alumni and Friends, As I look back on 2023, I am struck by the many ways in which the Muskingum community has embraced our mission to educate the whole learner for the whole world. It is clear our mission has always included a broad continuum of learners including undergraduates and adult learners from our region, across the nation and around the world. We have much to share with learners of all ages and are implementing innovative programs that accomplish this goal.

In this IMPACT Annual Report, you will learn about programs that serve traditional undergraduates, adults completing a bachelor’s or graduate degree, and those seeking specialized credentials or updated skills. Whether these innovative programs prepare students to serve in multiple healthcare roles including Occupational Therapy and Nursing; the K-12 education system through a new Teacher Apprenticeship Program; or providing excellent leadership in all walks of life though our Applied Leadership Programs, our commitment to access, excellence and affordability continues to shape

everything we do. You will note that we have expanded access to additional learners with our first doctoral program in Applied Leadership and free virtual leadership workshops for alumni.

Muskingum’s ongoing commitment to excellence and affordability has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report with two #1 rankings in Ohio this year: Best Value (excellence and affordability) and Social Mobility (promoting success for economically challenged students). The Muskingum Fund Scholarship program and the recent $1.1 million grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Choose Ohio First scholarship program are but two examples of the many

Learning & Innovation STUDENT SUCCESS • ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES • INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE We seek new ways to be RESPONSIVE TO LEARNER NEEDS for our residential undergraduate programs and our programming for adults.

Our students experience intentional programming focused on engagement and application, a comprehensive and integrated educational experience, and new program delivery models in a culture where relevance and responsiveness are embedded in everything we do.

Master of Occupational Therapy: A Distinctive Learning Experience Muskingum’s Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program offers a distinctive online experience paired with three on-campus hands-on learning weekends during each 10-week accelerated term.

These weekends allow each cohort of MOT students to connect in person with each other, faculty and staff, the campus community, and the surrounding community.

This unique hybrid program draws students from the region and across the country. Over the program’s history, one third of current students and alumni have enrolled from outside Ohio. In addition to those from Ohio’s contiguous states, students have enrolled from Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

For students from the southeastern Ohio area, the program allows them to help meet a critical regional healthcare workforce need.

The online components are provided in a combination of asynchronous and synchronous approaches and represent about 80 percent of the program. The program’s format provides a high degree of flexibility 4

in working with students across time zones and respecting the work and family obligations of the adult learner. Online meetings for office hours and working group sessions allow for real-time virtual communication, and all sessions are recorded and posted for later viewing. Students can continue to work throughout the program, making the degree financially accessible.

Weekend classes are focused on hands-on practical learning with faculty feedback and coaching, to develop the skills needed for occupational therapy practice. Poster presentations, wellness events provided by the MOT students for undergraduates, and other initiatives offer opportunities to engage with other members of the on-campus community.

MOT students and faculty also participated in the Fall 2023 Khanna Career Connections Conference.

Fieldwork experiences bring the MOT students into the regional community, through partnerships with the Avondale Youth Center and Breaking Free Therapeutic Riding Center.

Initially designed as a bridge program for current occupational therapy assistants, the program has now been expanded to allow students with a healthrelated bachelor’s degree to enroll.

Khanna Career Connections Conference On Sept. 30, the inaugural Khanna Career Connections Conference, presented by the Anuj Khanna ’86 family and provided free of charge to Muskingum undergraduates, brought together more than 120 students and 50 alumni volunteers.

Students engaged directly with alumni and prospective employers, to help develop their career interests.

Mary Hetrick Kaufmann ’87 presented the keynote address. Interactive breakout sessions included alumni panels, small group sessions, and workshops, with tracks for first years/sophomores and juniors/ seniors.

A career and networking fair on the Quad featured local and regional employers, and was followed by a seated lunch that offered additional opportunities for students and alumni to make connections.

Leaders of the Line Led by Muskingum’s Office of Cultural Engagement and Inclusion, Leaders of the Line is a program for the University’s male students of color, to create strong bonds of brotherhood and engagement across the campus and in the community.

The Impact Center invites alumni to partner with them in preparing students for their professional lives.

Muskingum’s Impact Center, which offers a rich variety of experiences to expertly prepare students for the future, developed the conference in partnership with the University’s Advancement Division and Alumni Council.

Junior and senior men serve as mentors to first years and sophomores, and seniors are matched with an alumni mentor. Programming events include speakers, workshops, community service engagement, and field trips. The University’s Impact Center provides career and professional development opportunities for the group.

Capping the Fall 2023 semester, for example, the Leaders of the Line attended a networking and socialprofessional skill-building dinner with a group of alumni of color at the Zanesville Country Club.

Leaders of the Line was established with a $25,000 NetVUE grant through the Council of Independent Colleges. Matching funds raised through the generosity of Muskingum alumni and friends resulted in the receipt of a second $25,000 NetVUE grant.

Transformative Growth PROGRAMMATIC PIPELINES • EXPANDED AUDIENCES • CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS We develop and implement the strategies, systems, and structures that will allow us to IDENTIFY, ATTRACT, AND SERVE A BROADER GROUP OF STUDENTS. Using focused and intentional recruitment strategies that incorporate the needs of the market along with effective and proven retention strategies geared toward our particular learners, we invest in the kind of growth that allows us to offer the best possible educational experience to all our learners.

Finney Hall Renovations Following a year-long interior renovation project to better meet student needs, Finney Hall reopened for student residency for the Fall 2023 Semester.

Finney was chosen for renovation in recognition of the role it plays in Muskingum’s community footprint and in supporting the University’s international students. During the summers, Finney’s layout provides an optimal space for hosting residential camps and conference attendees.

With kitchens on every floor, Finney is especially popular among Muskingum’s international students.

By preparing dishes from their cultures, students can help ease their transition from home and can introduce fellow Muskies to their cuisines.

Finney’s heating, air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical systems were updated, and restrooms and shower spaces throughout the building were redesigned and renovated to be single use and fully accessible.

Each residence room received new furniture and each floor has an updated lobby and study area.

The main floor was enhanced with a large lounge, computer lab, laundry facility, and a meeting space for student organizations outfitted with a kitchenette.

Finney has served upper class residential students since its opening in 1961. The Ohio Historic Tax Credit program provided the University with funding to assist with the renovation.

Applied Leadership Offers Master’s and Doctorate Degrees and Free Monthly Webinars Muskingum has expanded its reach to new learners with the creation of its first doctoral degree, the Doctor of Applied Leadership, and a new Master of Applied Leadership degree.

The two programs, launched in the Fall 2023 semester, are offered 100 percent online. Graduates will acquire a broad array of leadership skills applicable to any sector or type of organization.

Muskingum’s Applied Leadership programs focus on the practice of leadership, making the programs unique. By using evidence-based research to solve real-world problems, the relevance of the programs is reinforced throughout the curriculum, enabling students to immediately apply their new knowledge and lead effectively in their professional and personal lives.

Free monthly webinars introduce Applied Leadership through the Lessons in Leadership series. Key topics focus on real-world issues such as Ethical

alumni and educational institutions. A highlight of the trip was a visit to the prestigious Doon School, with whom the University has had a robust connection for 40 years; more than 50 Doon alumni have also become Muskingum alumni.

During a follow-up summer recruiting trip, Valerie and Director of Admission Jake Burnett ’05 returned to India, once again visiting The Doon School, as well as nine other college fairs and high schools in seven cities.

Leadership in Ohio’s New Teacher Apprenticeship Program Muskingum’s leadership in teacher preparation has helped create Ohio’s new Teacher Apprenticeship program.

The University’s Teacher Preparation Program, directed by Dr. Tim Slekar, has been working in partnership with the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) to help lay the groundwork for the teacher apprenticeship program model.

On March 1, 2023, in partnership with ODHE, Muskingum hosted a collaborative summit with more than 50 representatives from Southeast Ohio School Districts, educational service centers, and workforce development agencies.

As a result of the summit, on Aug. 15, 2023, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced the Ohio Teacher Apprenticeship Program, designed to help address the educator shortage and provide a new pathway to a teaching career.

School districts are able to identify individuals who are already part of their communities in non-teaching positions and provide them with access to the

apprenticeship program.

The apprenticeship program significantly reduces the cost and time to obtain licensure, while increasing the student teaching experience from 14 weeks to two years. By removing these barriers, the program creates greater access to a teaching career for Ohio residents.

International Student Recruiter Qiao Keating visited the North China Institute of Science and Technology (NCIST), reinvigorating the pre-pandemic partnership which offers NCIST students the opportunity to complete a Muskingum public health studies degree. President Hasseler and other Muskingum representatives visited NCIST to formalize the partnership in 2019.

In early fall, Valerie traveled to Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, strengthening partnerships that provide study abroad experiences for Muskingum students.

Through the Magellan Exchange consortium, classes are taught in English, expanding opportunities for Muskies across all majors to participate.

International Outreach: The Power of Relationships During 2023, several important outreach initiatives underscored the power of relationships in expanding Muskingum’s international footprint in the postpandemic era.

In February, President Sue Hasseler, Vice President for Institutional Advancement Paul McClelland, Director of Cultural Engagement and Inclusion Valerie Yonkers Smith ’00, and Trustee Nik Deogun ’91 traveled to Dubai, UAE and to Delhi and Dehradun, India to visit

Muskingum Receives Top Rankings Among Ohio Schools U.S. News & World Report: #1 in Ohio in Best Value and Social Mobility In fall 2023, Muskingum was the top performer among Ohio universities in the U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings for the Regional Midwest.

Muskingum ranked 1st among Ohio universities in Best Value Schools and 1st among Ohio universities in Top Performers in Social Mobility. Muskingum ranked 8th and 10th, respectively, in those categories among all universities in the Regional Midwest Group.

To determine which colleges and universities offer the best value for students, U.S. News & World Report factors academic quality and cost after accounting for total expenses and financial aid. According to U.S. News & World Report, “only schools ranked in or near the top half of their categories are included because U.S. News considers the most significant values to be among colleges that are above average academically.”

The Top Performers in Social Mobility rankings are given to schools that focus on students who are from low-income backgrounds, by “enrolling and graduating students who received federal Pell Grants.” Social mobility considers graduation rates for students who received federal Pell Grants, financial aid that is typically reserved for those with annual household family incomes below $50,000.

Muskingum’s RN to BSN program is 100 percent online with flexible course scheduling to meet the needs of the working nurse. Students also can apply for Muskingum’s Choose Ohio First scholarship, which supports science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) programs.

RNCareers.org: #1 RN to BSN Program in Ohio

According to Jeff Morrow, Publisher at RNCareers. org, “RNCareers.org has rigorously evaluated RN to BSN programs across the United States, and Muskingum University’s program not only excels in Ohio, but stands out nationally in the top 10%. This program is a beacon of excellence, combining robust academic rigor with real-world applicability.”

Muskingum University’s RN to BSN program was ranked #1 in Ohio by RNCareers.org. According to RNCareers.org, this accolade further distinguishes the University as a Nationally Recognized Nursing School of Distinction.

New Concord Community Day

Story Telling

During 2023, the longstanding bonds between Muskingum and the Village of New Concord took an innovative shape. A joint Community Day of free events took place on Sept. 2, planned in partnership between the University and a new community development nonprofit organization, the Friends of New Concord.

Every Muskie has a story about their time at Muskingum, and the impact the University had on their journey. During 2023, the University has focused its efforts on telling those stories. First, we redesigned the biannual Muskingum UPDATE magazine to focus on the stories of alumni and how the University impacted their lives, and on the stories of current students and how faculty and staff are providing programs and experiences that prepare them for their futures.

In addition to the new, formal partnership, Muskingum student organizations, activities, and athletic teams continue the tradition of holding wide-ranging community outreach projects in New Concord and surrounding areas.

The day included a Shop Walk for students and local businesses to get to know one another, a Vendor’s Village featuring local artisans, children’s activities, horse-drawn carriage rides through the Village, free admission for community residents to the football season home opener, and a post-game Party in the Park with live music, yard games, and food trucks, capped off by a bonfire. There was a great turn-out of students, faculty and staff, and New Concord residents, all now looking forward to Community Day 2024.

Informed by carefully gathered and managed data, we INVEST IN THE PEOPLE, PROGRAMS, AND PLACES that will be most effective in helping us accomplish our goals. We also invest in developing leadership capacity at all levels – students, staff, faculty, administrators, trustees, and alumni – to ensure that Muskingum will be WELL-POSITIONED FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.

Muskingum Fund Scholarships The Muskingum Fund Scholarship Program provides donors with the opportunity to make an immediate and direct impact on students. In turn, students learn about the generous alumni and friends who support them and discover the importance of philanthropy.

With an annual gift of $5,000 to the Muskingum Fund, a scholarship in the donor’s name is given to a deserving student. Students are notified of the direct support they receive, allowing them to experience the impact of giving back and inspiring this next generation to continue the tradition in the future.

In only the second year of the program, the number of students receiving Muskingum Fund Scholarships has more than doubled to 48. During the March 2023 Day of Giving, 8 Greek and social clubs collectively raised $34,000 to support students of their respective organizations with essential scholarships.

THRIVING FUTURE

On Sept. 7, 2023, Muskingum held its inaugural Athletic Day of Giving (#ADOG) to support all athletic teams.

These generous gifts from alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff will help provide student-athletes with outstanding experiences and strengthen the overall competitiveness of Muskingum’s athletic program.

Choose Ohio First In November 2023, Muskingum was awarded more than $1.1 million in Choose Ohio First (COF) funding from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, bringing the University’s total COF grants above $3 million over the past three years.

Participants promoted the event on social media and challenged former teammates, family, and friends to join them in supporting the Fighting Muskies. Muskie student-athletes crafted creative, enthusiastic social media videos and posts, encouraging followers to make a powerful impact.

During 2023, three members of the Muskingum Board of Trustees retired after a combined 64 years of service. Thank you for your leadership and stewardship!

Judson E. Blaine ’80 served from 1993-2023, sharing his entrepreneurial business expertise on multiple Board committees.

James R. Gray ’74 served from 2012-2023, first as Alumni Designated Trustee in the role of Alumni Council President, and then elected to the Board in 2019.

Robert W. Patin ’64 served from 1996-2023. He chaired the Board’s Development Committee from 20052018 and the 2015-2016 Presidential Search Committee.

L. Brent Miller ’83 of Columbus, Ohio is the owner of Slate Run Investments, specializing in middle market manufacturing and logistics businesses, and Slate Run Development Company, focused on multi-family real estate development.

James W. Schmotter ’69, of Naples, Florida and Ithaca, New York, served from 2004-2015 as President of Western Connecticut State University. In Memoriam J. Edward Barrett, 1932-2023

John "Jack" Kovach, 1940-2023

A Biblical scholar and philosophical theologian, Professor Barrett served on the faculty from 1964-1993.

Among the highlights of his time at Muskingum, he recalled leading student trips to Israel, Greece, and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s funeral in Atlanta, hosting campus speakers, and engaging in “thought-provoking and truth-seeking conversations” with his colleagues across all disciplines.

Ron High served Muskingum in the maintenance department from 1964-2000. He was a custodian for Moore Hall and he helped prepare for countless special occasions across the campus.

His colleagues recall his great sense of humor and that he could always be counted on when needed. He was the father of Terry High, who served Muskingum for 35 years as Grounds Supervisor and University Plumber.

Professor Kovach served on the Muskingum faculty from 1968-2005, including in the role of Geology Department Chair. A world traveler, he visited Europe, China, and Russia and collected field samples in Antarctica. He was a member of multiple scientific organizations and an avid outdoorsman. He was a resident of Deleware, Ohio.

Wayne French Miller ’56, 1933-2023 2012 Alumni Distinguished Service Award Recipient

Wayne Miller ’56, an entrepreneur and community leader, was honored with a Distinguished Service Award for his impact as the Founder, President, and CEO of the Orange National Bank (California) and his many roles as a civic volunteer. He earned his Muskingum Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science, was a football student-athlete, and served in U.S. Navy and Navy Reserve.

Paul L. Morris ’48, 1925-2023

Muskingum Vice President for Development and Public Affairs and 2007 Alumni Distinguished Service Award Recipient Paul Morris ’48 led Development and Public Affairs for Muskingum from 1970-1983 and completed his career as Vice President for Development at the Interlochen Center for the Arts (Michigan). He was honored with a Distinguished Service Award for his impact on arts education. He was married to Nancy McCall Morris ’50 (1928-2021), with whom he was co-president and co-founder of the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra.

Leonard M. Thomas ’52, 1931-2023 Lecturer of Music and 2011 Alumni Distinguished Service Award Recipient

Len Thomas ’52, Lecturer of Music from 2003-2017, was honored with a Distinguished Service Award for his international music career. He was the soloist, accompanist, choral director, and principal arranger for the popular performing group Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. He later founded and led the U.S. Chorus in a series of nationally-televised PBS concerts and was the editor and arranger of Shawnee Press.

Samuel W. Speck, Jr. ’59, 1937-2023 President Emeritus

Sam Speck served the University from 1987-1999 as a transformational President, with his advocacy for innovation, affordability and access, public service, and environmental sustainability shaping the Muskingum of today. He graduated with his Muskingum Bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in Political Science, serving as Student Senate President. He earned Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from Harvard University, and returned to Muskingum as a faculty member in 1964.

He blended his teaching career with the practice of politics, serving in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1971-1975. He was the primary author of the Ohio Strip Mine Reclamation Act, which paved the way for the revitalization of the land that is now The Wilds, one of North America’s largest and most innovative conservation centers, and became the model for the Federal Strip Mine Act. He served in the Ohio State Senate from 1976-1984, and in several federal posts in Washington, D.C. Among the many accomplishments of his Muskingum Presidency, Dr. Speck created the Conservation Science program, emphasized civic and political awareness and service to others as key educational components, and implemented a nationally recognized tuition repricing strategy that increased affordability and enrollment. He and his wife Sharon Anderson Speck ’60 (1938-2017) regularly hosted students, faculty, staff, and alumni at their home.

In 1999, he became Director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, where his achievements included leading the development of the eight-state and two-Canadian province consortium for water management and conservation of the Great Lakes. His countless civic leadership contributions in the region included serving as a founding member of both the 16-county Eastern Ohio Development Alliance and the 32-county Appalachian Partnership for Economic Growth.
