The score includes many vocally whispered sounds and some words sung on pitch. The work allows flexibility and adjustments with respect to the instrumentation.

Interpretation and Musical Time:

FruSSSna kviSStar is inspired by the poem Ja visst gör det ont (1935) written by the Swedish poet Karin Boye (1900-1941). The poem describes buds of a tree that freeze, burst, and drop down in the early, pale spring. It is written as a love poem. However, its symbolism could well refer to the tragedy of anything that freezes, breaks, ends, or falls apart before having the chance to flourish.

In FruSSSna kviSStar the poem of Boye is interpreted through a selection of whispered words and phonetic emphasis on specific consonants, combined with instrumental sounds. Occasionally the musicians pronounces words on a given pitch.

The percussion is thought of as a “musical front” rather than a “musical background”. There are several possible ways of placing the three percussionists in the room, such as locating them among – or in front of – the ensemble. A traditional placement behind the ensemble might work. However, the placement of the three percussionists should be taken actively into consideration.

The musical time is not assigned with metronome marks or tempo descriptions, but by fragments from the poem. The conductor chooses the tempo based on the interpretation. The following phrases are applied in the composition as a basis for interpretation of the tempo and character.

Instructions:

Let vibrate: A tie from the note continuing into a break. Vibrating freely as long as the sound naturally lasts.

Tremolos:

Occur softly and organically, as a part of a timbral web.

Chimes: Played without pedal.

Keywords to understand the atmosphere: frozenness. Icy drops. Glittery.

Whispered sounds:

SSS/ SS: A soft “s”, formed with round lips. Lips are positioned in a similar way as when “shushing” someone to be quiet. The “s” appears in several words, such as “FRuSSSna”, “KviSStar”, and “BRiSSter”.

Whispered sounds are not voiced but produced with only an airflow

Capital letters:

Capital letters are to be put emphasis on. The small letters are to be put less emphasis on.

The spatial effect:

The sound is moving spatially within the concert room, among the ensemble, forming a soft, varied timbre.

Singing:

The voiced words are sung on the written pitch. Depending on gender or voice type falsetto may be used. The pitch is not to be performed an octave below.

Wind instruments:

Microtones are quarter tones.
